RENSSELAER COUNTY DOG CARE CLASSES Dog care classes will be offered starting on Wednesday, April 27th on Wednesday nights through May and June, with the final class on June 15th, all at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds.

The emphasis of the classes will be obedience; agility and general dog care education. Classes are open to all community residents from youth to adults. Classes to the public will cost $60 for the 8-week course with discounted rates for Rensselaer County 4-H members. You must register in advance by calling the Cornell Cooperative Extension office of Rensselaer County. All dogs must be currently vaccinated against Rabies, Parvovirus, Distemper and Adenovirus (Kennel Cough is strongly suggested). Classes will begin at 6:30 PM. Participants should not bring their dogs the first night. There will be an overview and orientation to the class the first night, as well as checking paperwork for proof of vaccinations, registration and collecting fees. To register, call the CCE office of Rensselaer County at 272-4210. For more information about this and other 4-H Programs, contact your respective Cornell Cooperative Extension office.

STONER HONORED AT VT GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT The following Virginia Tech graduate student was among those honored at the university’s fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 17, 2010, in Cassell Coliseum. Nancy Stoner of Troy, received a Master of Natural Resources degree in natural resources from the College of Natural Resources and Environment. In all, approximately 1,079 graduate students were recognized during the Graduate School Ceremony, along with their families and friends. The ceremony was directed by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger.

I wanted to officially announce that I am running for a seat on the Averill Park Board of Education.

I was first elected to the Board of Education in 2000. During my first term with the Board, the District faced tumultuous times. We saw major changes in administration, and serious High School climate issues brought much negative publicity to our district. I’m proud that I was part of the positive changes that took place as a result of these times. When the Board President suddenly vacated her position, I stepped up and was unanimously supported by the Board to be the President. That was a period of time that I cherish. We were a thoughtful, proactive, effective board even though there was rarely a unanimous vote.

There was respect amongst the board members, administration, staff and taxpayers that I have yet to see again. It is my strongest desire to get back to that place where we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable, where the needs and wants of our children are respectively balanced with what the taxpayers can afford and where the board performs its role of accountability and oversight without repercussion.

Since being elected again in 2008, I have showed my support of our educational system despite forces that have opposed me for a variety of reasons. Those reasons are not important compared to the decisions that have been made by the majority of this board and administration that affect us daily. The administration works for the Board of Education and I believe that our role, as a board, is to provide oversight to the administration, therefore becoming the “checks and balances” that we expect from our government on any level.

I believe that my experience, both in and outside of the “board” will provide a balance which is desperately needed to operate this district for the benefit of ALL. Voting for me ensures a voice for balanced, affordable education that we can ALL be proud of! I am in a 6 way race for the Brittonkill School Board. The election is held on May 17th at the school. My name is Jim Sleicher. I come from a strong business background. We have had to make some hard business decisions these past few years to insure our family business future. I have spent 30 plus years keeping our cost under control. These past few years has proven a challenge. Thanks to our budgeting we are financially secure. I would bring this wealth of experience to the board.

Brittonkill’s single largest expense is payroll. Salaries and benefits are $15,000,000 out of a $20,000,000 budget.

Salaries are 50% and 25% are benefits cost. 75% of the total budget is personnel. $1,000,000 is spent on busing. $1,000,000 is spent for heat, electric and insurance.

I understand that schools are labor intensive, but you must not burden the homeowner with more taxes.

By all accounts next year is going to be worse for the district.

Contributions to retirement are going up double digit again.

Health costs will be increasing. Fuel is not coming down. For the upcoming year, the board has not realistically budgeted proper funds for fuel. They added $6000 to the new budget over 2010-2011 expense. A 4% increase over last year. I don’t think it will be enough when fuel has risen 40% and is still going up.

Let me leave you with this thought. There is a family of four.

The mother lost her job. Little Susie and Johnny want the designer clothes that Mom and Dad have gotten for them over the years. Now Mom has to decide if she should put food on the table or risk her kids being mad at her for not getting those $150 sneakers. What is she to do?

BE KIND TO ANIMALS POSTER & ESSAY CONTEST Be Kind to Animals Week is May 1 - 7th. Draw a picture or write an essay to show how you can prevent animal cruelty and abuse. How can you make a difference for animals in our community or in the world?

Poster & Essay Contest Rules: • Contest is open to all children from kindergarten through 8th grade. • One entry per student either essay or poster. • Any artistic medium is acceptable (markers, colored pencils, paints, etc). Make it colorful! • Essays should be no more than 250 words. • Maximum size for posters is 11 x 14 inches and it should have a semi-firm backing. • Entries will be judged on originality, demonstration of the theme, and creativity. • Entries will be judged by groups: Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8. • Posters must be labeled on the front lower corner with artist’s name, age/grade. A TASTE OF BRITTONKILL The Brittonkill Educational Foundation, in its 16th year, will be hosting “A Taste of Brittonkill”. The Brittonkill Educational Foundation raises funds from the community for the purpose of providing innovative programs and projects to the students of the Brunswick Central School District, which are above and beyond the normal course curriculum and are unable to be funded through the district budget.

A “Taste of Brittonkill” will entail various restaurants donating and serving unique cuisine. We would like to invite your business to sponsor this event. The Foundation needs to raise $1,000 to cover venue costs. Your sponsorship at any level would be appreciated. The following are highlights of the April 12, 2011 regular meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature: Introduced Legislation urging the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly to pass a bill establishing penalties for the desecration of Veteran memorials – The Rensselaer County Legislature was proud to sponsor a resolution to protect our war memorials in New York State. Preservation of military history insures that future generations understand the significance of what our veterans did to preserve the democracy and the freedoms Americans are so privileged to enjoy.

Introduced Legislation - A resolution requesting state lawmakers to provide mandate reform in 2011 – The Legislative Body requests State law makers to provide meaningful mandate reform during 2011 to help protect taxpayers and needed local services. Mandate reform can save counties and municipalities millions individually through the State assuming costs now assigned to mandates or by empowering counties to opt – out of certain mandated programs.

Authorized a contract for renovations of the Department of Motor Vehicles Office - The Rensselaer County Legislature passed a bill that will make Motor Vehicles more accessible and user friendly. The renovations will improve and enhance residents’ experience while doing business at the same time increasing efficiencies.

Introduced Legislation – A resolution recognizing April 22, 2011 as Earth Day in Rensselaer County – Your City of Troy Legislators encourage all residents, businesses and institutions to join them in participating in one of the scheduled Earth Day Events planned throughout the city. LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH The Troy Public Library and the Capital District Chapter of the Empire State Lyme Disease Association are pleased to present the riveting film “Under Our Skin” in recognition of May, Lyme Disease Awareness Month, on Wednesday, May 4th, at 5:30 p.m.. “A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine and money, this eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme Disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS. In observance of April, National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Sexual Assault & Crime Victims Assistance Program for Rensselaer County at Samaritan Hospital is hosting its 4th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®,” a community march to raise awareness of sexual violence, Saturday, Apr. 30, 11 a.m. (registration/check-in at 10 a.m., noon reception), at Samaritan Hospital’s Lally Pavilion, 2215 Burdett Ave., Troy. WXXA Fox 23 News anchor John Gray is emcee. The first-of-its-kind community event and fundraiser invites the public, especially men, to show support for victims by literally walking a mile in women’s highheeled shoes.

Individuals or teams of walkers may participate with sponsors and pledges. Prizes will be awarded to the Top Team and Top Individual fundraisers. There will also be raffles and free massages, followed by a lunch reception. Last year’s event brought out more than 200 participants and raised more than $22,000 to benefit the program.

Registration is $10 in advance; $15 on the day of the event.

TEAM SPARKLE RUNS FOR LITERACY Team Sparkle started as a way for a group of Rensselaer County residents to have fun and raise funds for a worthy cause.

Team member Kristin Morgan is a Literacy Volunteers tutor who has chaired fundraising events for Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County in the past. Last year she combined her love of running and her dedication to the cause of literacy by challenging friends and neighbors to compete in the 5K Literacy Run/Walk. The result was a 16-member team called Sparkle.

This year the team is gearing up once again for the 5K in Troy.

On Sunday, May 1, runners between the ages of 12 and 60something will be out in hot pink Sparkle tee shirts, showing their support for literacy programs in Rensselaer County. The goal this year is for all the team participants to be sponsored runners. Since runners usually rely on friends and neighbors for sponsorship, this is a way for Team Sparkle to cast the net a little wider. “We love the Literacy Run,” said Kristin Morgan.

“It’s a family event, and since it’s a run/walk, it means people of all ages and abilities can participate.”

Literacy Run/Walk is made possible by CAP COM Cares Foundation, IBT Global, Fox 23 News, E. Stewart Jones, Stewart’s Shops, Cohoes Savings Foundation, The Record, Aflac New York, Architecture +, Gettysburg Flag Works, and others.

KEEP THE TOMHANNOCK PRISTINE The Tomhannock Reservoir provides drinking water to over 100,000 residents in Rensselaer and Albany Counties. Keeping inappropriate runoff from contaminating the reservoir is critical to maintaining the quality of our city’s drinking water. Last year, over 50 volunteers from the community collected over 100 garbage bags of debris and litter that had accumulated over the past year along the reservoir’s 17 miles of shoreline.

HFCS FRESHMAN TO BE STUDENT AMBASSADOR Anthony Chapones was recently selected as a People to People student ambassador, which will bring the Hoosick Falls Central School freshman to England, France and Italy over a 19-day period this summer. Some of the experiences awaiting the ambassador include an official briefing in London from a member of Parliament, undergoing leadership training, visiting the Roman Colosseum, and rappelling down an Italian castle. Students on the trip also perform a day of community service. Past groups have done projects such as building parks, although Chapones said he doesn’t know what the project will be this summer. To help offset the cost of tuition, he is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on May 14th at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall in Hoosick Falls from 5:30 – 7:30 with the Brewster’s Band providing entertainment from 6:30 – 8:00. Dinners are $10 and consist of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Dinners are eat-in, take-out, or can be delivered directly to you. CROSS STITCH SHOWCASE Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road in Grafton announces a free CROSSSTITCH Spectacular Showcase to be held Friday, May 20, from 4-7; Saturday, May 21, from 10-4; and Sunday, May 22, from 10-3.

This lovely show of more than 200 pieces of art is the result of countless hours of work by local Grafton residents, Sally Statile and her sister, Nancy Stowell. Sally has been making counted cross stitch embroidery pieces for over thirty years and taught her sister Nancy the art more than twenty years ago. Their work is so intricate that pieces are often mistaken for paintings.
