The Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association will hold a Family Fun Day fundraiser in support of 10-year-old Alexander Holcomb, a fifth grader at Poestenkill Elementary School, who was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. Coming off a successful event in April which merged visual art with performance pieces, Soul Rebel Performance Troupe will present An Evening of Monologues by and about people of color at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. Soul Rebel Performance Troupe, a not-for-profit organization, which seeks to highlight and promote performance and theatrical pieces by artists of color in the New York State Capital Region is teaming up with Circle Theatre Players to present An Evening of Monologues in June at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. The event will feature many original locally written pieces presented by Capital Region actors, poets, and writers,as well as a collection of visual artwork and artesian crafts. “HISTORICAL BACKYARD FIELD TRIP” Day trips can be so expensive now, so the Rensselaer County’s Troy Senior Center is offering a field trip as a special service to seniors 60 years of age or older, using our Rensselaer County vans and volunteer drivers. Our destination is the Martin Van Buren Estate in Kinderhook. Enjoy an escorted tour of the house and grounds, then off to the Main Street Cafe for some real home cooking. RELAY FOR LIFE OF RENSSELAER COUNTY Relay For Life is a community event held by the American Cancer Society with the goal of generating awareness, honoring survivors and loved ones lost, and uniting together in the fight against cancer. Saturday, June 11th, at 6PM, Joe Bruno Stadium of Troy, NY will be the host of Rensselaer County’s Relay For Life and is extending the opportunity/challenge to all community members to contribute to the cause. All funds raised support the American Cancer Society’s mission to help people stay well, help people get well, find cures, and fight back. The overnight event includes a night full of activities that will reflect the night’s theme, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”. Participants will camp out right in the outfield of the ballpark, as the night comprises of a Survivor Dinner right before the Relay, a Survivors Lap recognize the brave and fortunate, and a Luminaria Ceremony to remember those we have lost. The First Reformed Church will be holding their Annual DriveThru Chicken BBQ on Saturday, June 11th, from 4:30 - 7 p.m. The menu includes 1/2 BBQ chicken (with Clements’ Old-Fashioned BBQ Sauce), baked potato, vegetable, homemade cole slaw, rolls and dessert. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (5-12), under 5 are free, and can be reserved by calling the church office at 283-4420 or 2830230. The church is located on the corner of Church St. & Main Ave. in Wynantskill. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund for our youth to attend summer camp.

The Capital District Friday Field Group is a mix of amateur and professional naturalists formed in 1994 that meets weekly on Fridays at 5:30PM between April and September to explore natural features of sites in the Capital Region. EXTENSION SEEKS LOCAL GARDENS FOR GARDEN TOUR Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is seeking interesting gardens for the Rensselaer County Garden Tour. The tour will take place the evening of June 30. Gardens are needed on the north side of Troy, Lansingburgh, Pleasantdale, Speigletown, Melrose and adjoining areas. PUBLIC NOTICE Public Hearing/Comment Period on Draft GEIS and Comprehensive Plan Town of Nassau PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Town Board of the Town of Nassau has introduced and proposed for adoption a new Comprehensive Plan that sets forth the official land use and governmental policies, goals and objectives for the Town of Nassau. The proposed Comprehensive Plan, dated February 15, 2011, has been revised in consideration of comments received on the prior draft. GREENSNEAKERS PROGRAM COLLECTION A number of local churches have teamed up to conduct a fundraiser for fellow Pastor and friend, the Rev. William D. “Kip” Slawter III of Hope Church, Ballston Spa. Nearly a year ago, Slawter was riding his bike and skidded into a steep ditch, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down. In a joint effort with the GreenSneakers program, local churches will be collecting used, rubber-soled sneakers. TROY’S 44th ANNUAL FLAG DAY PARADE

Troy’s 44th Annual Flag Day Parade will kick-off on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 PM. The largest parade of its kind, it starts at 4th and Main streets and ends at 4th and Grand streets in downtown Troy. “The Flag Day Parade is dedicated to the American flag and the principles of freedom Old Glory represents. The parade also honors the men and women of our armed forces, who have died fighting for or are currently defending our country at home and abroad,” said Mayor Harry Tutunjian, who encouraged people to attend and show their support. This year there are 125 different organizations, including drum corps, fire departments, military and veteran’s organizations, and local high schools with representation from both Troy and Lansingburgh high schools. Some organizations are from as far away as Buffalo and New Jersey. For 2011, the Troy IDA helped support the 2011 parade with a $5,000 grant to help keep this enormously popular event continuing. The Flag Day Parade Committee thanks the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, the volunteers that assist throughout the parade, and all of the people who support the parade by sending in donations. The parade continues to be successful because of their efforts and the enthusiastic support of parade watchers along the parade route. The committee noted donations are still being accepted.
