NOW OPEN SUNDAYS COMMITTEE TO ELECT RON CAMPANO RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF After much consideration, recently retired New York State Trooper Ronald “Ron” J. Campano is announcing his intentions to run for the November 08, 2011 Rensselaer County Sheriff’s election.

At the current age of 60 years old, Campano was forced into retirement last December from his job as a Senior Investigator with more than 37 years with the New York State Police.

Currently New York law mandates that all troopers retire by the age of 60.

Considering himself a viable candidate, Mr. Campano has put together an “exploratory committee” comprised of community leaders, members of law enforcement, close friends and advisors to take a look at the most practical approach to a successful campaign. Mr. Campano is currently registered as an Independent.

Campano believes that he can introduce new policy and procedure within the Sheriff’s department that will save Rensselaer County taxpayers millions of dollars over time.

Vowing to lead by example, Campano insists that when he is elected to the Sheriff’s position that he will “give back the first two months of his annual salary” to the hard working taxpayers of Rensselaer County.

Campano adds, “I believe that I could manage the position as Sheriff and would act on more of a community basis by giving back more services to the county taxpayers, and putting pride and respect back into the department.”

“Being a Trooper in New York for over 37 years has afforded me the personal and professional connections on a local, state and national level that will guarantee my successful run for this office. I have had a lot of good people willing to do anything for me to make this happen, and I look forward to the opportunity and the challenge.”

EAST GREENBUSH AMBULANCE DISTRICT DISPOSES OF RESCUE VEHICLE The East Greenbush Ambulance District, acting by and through the East Greenbush Town Board, recently disposed of its full-service, heavyrescue vehicle, known as Rescue 62, for a sale price of $265,000. The disposal, which was authorized by the Town Board at its April meeting, was undertaken via a public, open-bid process aptly conducted by our Town Comptroller, Jim Breig.

Rescue 62, which very much resembles a fire truck, but is essentially a giant toolbox on wheels, is designed and equipped to allow the performance of advanced rescue operations, including vehicle extrication. Over the last year, the Town Board, in consultation with officials of W. F. Bruen Emergency Squad, recognized that there is currently exceptional coordination of rescue-related services within the town by the Best-Luther Fire Department, the Clinton Heights Fire Department, and the East Greenbush Fire Company.

Accordingly, the vehicle was designated by the Town Board as surplus to the needs of the Ambulance District, and its disposal, therefore, deemed to be in the best interest of the District.

Since the town purchased Rescue 62 in 2002, the staff of W. F. Bruen Emergency Squad has ensured that the vehicle has been maintained in excellent condition, both aesthetically and operationally. As a result, the District realized a premium sale price when the Walworth Fire District No. 1, located in Wayne County just east of Rochester, took delivery of the vehicle on May 28. With a portion of the sale proceeds having been used to pay a 5% sale commission and pay off the balance of the vehicle loan, the remainder has been applied to the Ambulance District fund and will be used to pay for future District-related expenses. ~Rick Matters, East Greenbush Town Councilman

She was also the recipient of numerous scholarships and grants for honors, and diversity as a nontraditional student. Kathie has accepted a Registered Nurse position on the Vascular Post-Op Unit at Albany Medical Center, which she is looking forward to with great anticipation.

NO. CHATHAM UMC TO HOLD ITS ANNUAL “MISSION POSSIBLE” FAIR The North Chatham United Methodist Church will be holding their 7th annual “Mission Possible” Fair on Saturday, June 11th.

The church is located at 4274 Route 203 in the hamlet of North Chatham and the event will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There will be craft vendors, music, food, and live & silent auctions of goods and services. The Clothing Barn will be open and there will be lots of activities for kids. May was a busy and productive month for the Town Board. Prior to our monthly meeting we celebrated the 2011 Spotlight on Youth Awards in which a group of distinguished young people were presented awards. Those honored this year were Katelyn Job, Caitlin O’Neil, Lauren Stockli, Ciara Cristo, Jared Stone and Nicholas Whitney.

East Greenbush and the City of Rensselaer approved a joint Water District Agreement. This agreement resulted in the reimbursement of $578,268.00 to our town for past water bonding. This revenue was not in the 2011 budget and will be used to offset the debt of our current bond. The agreement included payments for the remainder of the bond pay-off.

A site plan approval for a new Dunkin Donuts passed unanimously.

We moved one step closer to bringing a roundabout to Couse Corners; retaining a local inspection firm for construction.

Construction of roundabout is scheduled to begin after schools recess for the summer. We will be providing more information regarding alternate routes and schedule at an informational meeting to be announced. Also, please check our Town website www.eastgreenbush.org for more information on all events going on in the Town.

The Board approved a resolution for “Wireless 911” equipment for emergency calls. This new technology will forward all 911 calls to our local 911 answering points; bypassing the county for a more quick response time to calls. This upgrade was paid for through the County’s “E911 Account”.

Our Community and Recreational Activities Department is still taking registrations for this year’s summer camp. This year the camp is under new management and looking forward to providing a safe and fun summer for campers. Please call Dani or Anita at 477-4194 to get registered.

BEAUTIFICATION OF ELMWOOD CEMETERY

R.A.A.D COMMUNITY MEETING Once upon a time, in a community very near, there were children, teens, young adults and others whose lives had been devastated by the horrors of underage drinking and drugging.

Community members soon came together, working diligently to overcome this scourge affecting so many people’s lives. The twelve sectors of the community came together, educated themselves about the enemy (alcohol and other drugs), and wrote a grant for $625,000 to help change the picture to a happy and healthy one. Lo and behold, they received the money and made an unprecedented change in the direction the community went. This ensured that all youth were given the opportunity to live in a supportive and healthy community and realize their full potential. And everyone lived happily ever after…

We want this happy picture for our youth who attend the Averill Park School District. If you are a parent or caregiver, business owner, law enforcement, youth, elected official or work in the media or health field, work serving local youth and families or are a part of a religious or fraternal organization, civil or volunteer group, state, local or tribal government agency (and almost anyone reading this letter probably is) then you are one of twelve sectors. The Averill Park community coalition known as RAAD-(Rage Against Alcohol and Drugs in our community) is asking for your help in bringing grant monies to our children, teens and young adults. In order for us to apply for the grant, all 12 sectors of the community need to be involved. We have a wonderful opportunity to make positive change and impact the devastating effects of underage drinking and drugging present here –where we shop, eat, visit, conduct business and live…

The three daughters of Harold and Marion Weatherwax (Janet, Sandra and Kathleen) admire the ornamental cherry tree just planted in Elmwood Cemetery in memory of their parents.

Patroon Nursery also planted a second Kwanzan cherry tree donated in remembrance of the many generations of the Weatherwax family buried at Elmwood since its inception in the early 1800’s. This picture, along with notations by the family, becomes the first entries in an Elmwood Memorial album to be maintained by the Cemetery Association.

Plans for development of the 2 acre expansion of the cemetery will include landscaping with trees, hedges and benches in designated areas. There will be opportunities for other families to donate lasting memorials to their loved ones. Patroon Nursery has been selected to support the program through recommendation and selection, pricing and installation (as desired) of stock appropriate to the planting area. The largest parade of its kind, it starts at 4th and Main streets and ends at 4th and Grand streets in downtown Troy.

“The Flag Day Parade is dedicated to the American flag and the principles of freedom Old Glory represents. The parade also honors the men and women of our armed forces, who have died fighting for or are currently defending our country at home and abroad,” said Mayor Harry Tutunjian, who encouraged people to attend and show their support.

This year there are 125 different organizations, including drum corps, fire departments, military and veteran’s organizations, and local high schools with representation from both Troy and Lansingburgh high schools. Some organizations are from as far away as Buffalo and New Jersey.

For 2011, the Troy IDA helped support the 2011 parade with a $5,000 grant to help keep this enormously popular event continuing.

The Flag Day Parade Committee thanks the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, the volunteers that assist throughout the parade, and all of the people who support the parade by sending in donations. The parade continues to be successful because of their efforts and the enthusiastic support of parade watchers along the parade route.

The committee noted donations are still being accepted.

HYDROFRACTURING The community is invited to attend an informational session on extracting natural gas from Marcellus shale bedrock by Hydrofracturing, with John Williams of the US Geological Survey at 7PM on Wednesday, June 15th, at the Church of the Covenant, the round church in the center of Averill Park. The meeting is sponsored by the church’s Social Concerns Commission. COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA SPRING CONCERT Lots of enjoyment is in store for all who attend the Averill Park Community Orchestra concert on Sunday, June 12. The program runs at the East Greenbush Town Park from July 5 to July 22 and July 25 to August 12. Camp is Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes bus transportation. Free fun: Scholarships are available to cover full camp tuition Robots, semiconductors, nanotechnology - mixed with fun: Questar III BOCES, in partnership with the Tech Valley Career Pathways Consortium, will again offer two very popular summer day-camps for local high school students. The camps are open to young people of all abilities, interests and talents, and scholarships are available to cover camp tuition.

From July 12-15, 2011, Questar III offers students entering grades 9-11 next fall SEMI High Tech U, an action-packed, four-day journey into high-tech careers that is being cosponsored by the Center for Economic Growth, GLOBALFOUNDARIES, NEATAC, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and NYSUT. SEMI High Tech U campers will venture to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Schenectady County Community College, and the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany. Led by high-tech professionals, SEMI High Tech U campers will engage in exciting, hands-on activities, working as teams to create products and solve problems, while also finding the fun in math, science and technology.

From July 25-29, Questar III teams up with Union College to offer students entering grades 912 in September 2011 the popular Build a Better Robot camp. In the college’s labs and classrooms, campers will learn to construct and program in Basic as they take a box of parts and transform it into a working robot. The camp also includes sessions on robotics in general, and demonstrations of robots developed at Union College. The week culminates in an exhibition for parents and the public at the Schenectady Museum where students will showcase their robots.

Students must be recommended by a school counselor or teacher to be considered for enrollment in the camps, and they should apply for scholarships to cover tuition costs. Meals are not included, and space is limited at all Career Pathways camps. Register online at www.questar.org/ summercamp.

RENSSELAER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FORMED A group of Rensselaer High School graduates from various classes, 1946-2000, met on May 24th at Rensselaer High School to form the new association. The Alumni Association is to include all graduating classes, with the purpose of promoting the school and insuring the continuation of the Centennial Alumni Award for notable graduation students. The Class of ’48 Centennial Award of $500 was presented at the 1998 graduation Ceremony which honored the school district’s 100th anniversary. In the past 12 years, nineteen $500 awards have been presented to outstanding graduating seniors. The Alumni Association has scheduled its first fundraising event for graduates and their spouses, a sit-down dinner/dance at Birch Hill, in Schodack from 6:00 – 11:00 PM, Saturday, October 22, 2011. The cost is $45 per person which includes a one hour open bar, dinner, dessert, and dancing. Cleanup and beatification projects are underway again in the Town of East Greenbush. Drivers are already enjoying spring flowers along Columbia Turnpike that were planted last year.

This year’s efforts have kicked off with a project at the Hampton Manor Lake House. Girl Scout Troop 1083 signed up through the Town’s Youth and Recreation Activities Dept. to Plant Flower beds on a Saturday morning. As the Scouts were hard at work with members of the Town’s Parks Task Force, Erica Molina happened by, and asked if she could join in as a “citizen volunteer.”

Other projects that can be accomplished in an hour or two, on an evening or weekend are on the planning list. Anyone who might be moved by the same community minded spirit of young Erica Molina and Troop 1083 can take part. COACH ORGAN’S 2011 BASKETBALL CAMP CHARITY TRAP SHOOT The Hendrick Hudson Fish & Game Club, 100 Gun Club Way in Averill Park will host its 1st Annual Charity Trap Shoot on Saturday, June 11th (rain date June 18th), from 9AM to 2PM for a cost of $10 a round to benefit the Cancer Services Program of Rensselaer County. This program helps men 50 and older and women 40 and older who are without health insurance receive FREE life saving cancer screenings.

This shoot is open to the public; equipment and instruction will be available for first time shooters. We will have food, chance drawings and most importantly the opportunity for anyone who needs services to enroll in the program. RPI 2011FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FINALIZED The 2011 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football schedule has been finalized and the Engineers will once again play a nine-game regular season slate. This year marks the first for RPI under head coach Tim Landis, who was hired in March. RPI opens the campaign at 1pm on September 10 at Alfred. The Saxons were 10-3 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. One of their three losses was to Rensselaer, 27-24.

The Engineers make their home debut with the team’s firstever meeting against Castleton State on September 17. It will be just the second night game in Troy as kickoff is set for 6pm.

RPI opens its league schedule the next week, traveling to WPI for the Transit Trophy Game at 1pm.

Rensselaer’s next three games are at home, including two Liberty League games. Rochester visits on October 1 (1pm) before Utica comes to Troy on October 8 for the Engineers’ final non-league game, beginning at 1pm. Following a bye, RPI hosts defending league champion St. Lawrence on October 22 at 1pm for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.

October 29 marks the 62nd Dutchman Shoe’s Trophy Game – the annual matchup with Union– at 1pm in Schenectady. The Engineers won last year’s meeting, 21-7, and have now captured four of the last five games between the two schools, which have the oldest collegiate football rivalry in New York State (108 games).

Rensselaer’s final road game is November 5 at Hobart (12pm) and the regular season finale is the following Saturday, November 12, against the Merchant Marine Academy (2pm).

Rensselaer is coming off a season in which it won the most games of any team in the Liberty League and earned its ninth post-season bid in the past 12 years. There are 37 returning letterwinners, including five starters on offense and five more on defense.

Rensselaer County Legislators Lou Desso and Leon Fiacco recently presented Twin Town Little League Baseball with lifesaving equipment in time for the 2011 season. Desso and Fiacco presented Twin Town league officials with two defibrillators that can be used during medical emergencies. The two defibrillators will be kept at the Twin Town fields on Williams Road in North Greenbush. Funding for the purchase of the defibrillators was provided with support from Desso, Fiacco, Vice Chairman of the Legislature for Finance Phil Danaher and Legislator Michael Cristo. “The Twin Town fields host thousands of spectators, players and parents during the season. These defibrillators will help protect those in attendance, especially during a medical emergency,” said Desso.

The 2011 season is the 60th anniversary of the founding of Twin Town Little League Baseball, which serves youths in North Greenbush, Sand Lake, Poestenkill and surrounding areas.

“Twin Town baseball is a great part of our community and has made a positive difference in the lives of so many young people for years. We congratulate the league on its 60th anniversary and wish Twin Town many, many more years of successful operation,” said Fiacco.

The overnight event includes a night full of activities that will reflect the night’s theme, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”.

DISAPPOINTING START IN THE VILLAGE OF NASSAU Letter to the Editor: On April 13th, in a packed village hall, Village of Nassau residents reviewed the 2011/12 budget proposed by Mayor Collins. Unfortunately, residents were not able to ask questions of the Mayor regarding the budget because he did not attend the budget hearing. Instead, he left an unprepared Deputy Mayor and the other village trustees to face the public. Many questions were raised and few answers were provided. Here are just some of the more serious problems with the budget: 1) the village trustees admitted that they had no input into the budget, and the Deputy Mayor commented that this was the first time he’d seen the numbers; 2) the budget excluded funding for expenses the village is already contractually obligated to pay; and 3) there were no explanations provided for the personnel decisions presented in the budget.

For a new administration that is supposedly ready to address questions of consolidation of services and perhaps even whether the village should continue to exist at all, this is a disappointing start. If even the trustees don’t know what is going on, how will the residents?

I urge all village residents to attend the monthly village board meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm at the village hall. The next meeting is scheduled for July 13th.

Village business should be conducted openly and transparently.

I urge you to demand that negotiations between the village and other municipalities happen in public meetings with opportunity for public input and comment. I hope that this administration begins working more responsibly. I intend to be there to help ensure it does. ~Gaetano J. GREENSNEAKERS PROGRAM COLLECTION A number of local churches have teamed up to conduct a fundraiser for fellow Pastor and friend, the Rev. William D. “Kip” Slawter III of Hope Church, Ballston Spa. Nearly a year ago, Slawter was riding his bike and skidded into a steep ditch, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down.

DREW HERRMANN NAMED TO SUNY CORTLAND’S DEAN’S LIST Drew Herrmann, son of Susan Herrmann of East Greenbush and Bob Herrmann of Guilderland, was named to the Spring Term 2011 Dean’s List at SUNY Cortland. He finished the semester with a 3.50. Drew is a Senior in the Sports Management BS program with a double minor in Economics and IT. Drew is a starter for the Division 2 Cortland Warrior’s Rugby Team that won the NYS Championship against RPI. Drew has a summer internship with the Cortland Youth Department.

Letter to the Editor: David Crawmer misconstrued my letter last month to The Advertiser, the intent of which was not to impugn his intelligence or question his political convictions. I was reacting to the general tone of his article wherein he used someone’s bumper sticker as a springboard to launch a manifesto which did precisely that – it insulted the intelligence and vilified the political values of anyone with whom he happens to disagree.

I adhere to the notion that ideas should be considered on their own merit, regardless of their source. If someone espouses an idea or course of action that makes sense to me, I’ll support it, give credit where it’s due and vote accordingly. In fact, Mr. Crawmer, I occasionally agree with you; for instance, I agree with your observation that the inquiry by Hillary Clinton’s 2008 primary campaign staff into Barack Obama’s American birth legitimacy was dirty politics. By the way, you will note that I used the term “Birther” in quotes because I share your stated, though seldom observed, aversion to labels.

The broader point was to express my distaste for our cultural tendency to view every issue through the narrow lens of political ideology, party affiliation, ethnicity, religion, or what have you. This is no longer the Age of Reason and Thomas Paine would be appalled at the lack of common sense and civility in our current public discourse. Instead, it’s the age of media saturation, celebrity worship and a general disregard for learning or rational thought.

My letter was meant as a cautionary note against overweening pride in one’s own intellectual gifts and Donald Trump was offered as a prime example of such braggadocio. It was impersonal and apolitical to the point that it did not merit an editorial caveat.
