Cory Strauch Joins Crossroads at Lakewood

June brought tears of sorrow and joy to our Northglenn community. Residents were sad to learn that Cory Strauch had agreed to become Executive Director of Crossroads at Lakewood Memory Care. Cory’s supporters gathered in the Aspen room for a farewell and to congratulate him on his new position. Kenneth Weiss, Chief Operating Officer of Crossroads made the announcement, and while there was sadness at the news, the residents celebrated Cory’s service with cheers and applause. Many donuts were enjoyed as well.

Just in case you didn’t know, before Cory Strauch leaves Northglenn, you ought to know a bit more about the man with the dog.

Cory grew up in healthcare. His mom was a nurse and his grandmother ran a home health company. His first personal encounter with healthcare was in high school. Cory, as a member of a championship ROTC unit, learned discipline and responsibility. He was also introduced to seniors with and without cognitive deficits while participating in community outreach programs.

His is a true “work your way” up story when it comes to his experience in assisted living and memory care. He began as a dishwasher at 15 and then moved to caregiving when he turned 16. By 18, Cory was working in various facilities as a QMAP and other roles. At Crossroads, Cory first worked overnights as a QMAP and soon transitioned into daytime work, eventually becoming a Resident Care Coordinator and most recently the Resident’s Services Director at Crossroads at Northglenn.

Cory received his Executive Director license in January 2020 and has been in Crossroad’s Administrator In Training program since. Satisfaction of the resident, staff, family and care provider has always been Cory’s utmost priority and one he plans to continue as he leads the team at Crossroads at Lakewood. He is truly grateful for all of your well wishes and he promises to visit. And of course, he will bring Colt with him.

they gathered for the official “Trash the Mask” party. Gathering around a trash bin, masks met their final fate, and not a minute too soon. The words “good riddance” were uttered and tears of gratitude ran down cheeks as some expressed happiness that the masks did their job. The party continued with Happy Hour and live music provided by Don “Cannonball” Coenen.

Executive Director Bulletin Embracing change. It is said change is inevitable and we must embrace it. Covid has brought us many changes. Some changes we were forced to embrace and others we welcomed. Change is what keeps our lives from being simply that of existing.

During the last year and a half this pandemic has taught me a few things, but most of all, it has shown me the resilience we all have within. I have witnessed family members yearning to hold loved ones. Their frustration, and at times anger, when they were stopped from sharing a most basic need, human touch. Yes, that was hard to witness.

However, every hard experience comes with a lesson or a reward in the end.

Despite the difficulties we all faced by distancing ourselves from our loved ones, the love, happiness, and pure joy of the first hug was beyond an amazing experience. Opening our doors and witnessing those very first hugs and tears of joy is something I will cherish and never forget.

Thank you for sharing! Covid did change our day to day lives but for me I have been reminded that change is sometimes necessary, sometimes needed, always enviable and often beautiful in the end.

Yes, Covid has changed our world and touched each of us differently, but I choose to focus on the positive change it continues to bring. Lasting memories, many smiles, some tears of joy and some of pain, new relationships, stronger bonds, and mostly a greater appreciation for the simple thing—love for one another.

Raise Your Heart Rate by Lowering Your Blood Pressure If you are finding your blood pressure running a little higher these days, there are simple steps you can take to get things back to normal.

EXERCISE You may read that and think “Oh my, you sound like my doctor.” But she’s right. And you’ll want to talk to your doctor about what limits you may have, but increasing your heart rate through normal activities approved by your doctor will help lower your blood pressure. Our goal is to raise our heartbeat—not from more episodes of Peyton Place, but from exercise.

If your doctor approves, work out with Gloria at all of their aerobics activities. This will move the blood through your body, oxygenating your blood and adding color in your skin, tone to your body, and well, just make you feel better. You’ll probably sleep better too.

As often as you can, take a walk. Walk the long way around the building to get to breakfast. In fact, if the weather is good, go outside and walk around the building to get to breakfast. Do it for lunch too.

Even supper. Go at a pace you are comfortable with and go with a friend. But add a few steps to each of your activities and you’ll be on your way to better health. Upcoming from Maranatha Maranatha, a non-profit that provides short term volunteer opportunities worldwide, benefits directly from projects that are sponsored by Crossroads Senior Living. In June Maranatha volunteers ventured back into service at a remote school campus in Oregon.

Among the tasks tackled on this project were painting the exterior and interior of the girls dorm, making miscellaneous repairs in the boys dorm, installing

trim in a staff house, and landscaping. Volunteers also worked at nearby Camp Umpqua, installing pine siding in the lodge and constructing a duplex cabin.

Wherever volunteers were stationed, project coordinator and Maranatha board member, Ed Jensen, noticed them doing extra work beyond what was assigned. “These aren’t the kind of people who sit around and enjoy the ambiance,” said Jensen. “They saw the need, jumped on it, and took care of it.”

For first-time volunteer Ron Gadreault, not only was the work rewarding, but the community he joined was special as well. “I didn’t realize how much of a family it becomes, and how much people mean to you,” said Gadreault. “That is how Maranatha seems to be, a family helping others. Everybody cares about each other and cares about the project, and we work together as a family works together. And you get kind of sad when you have to leave.”

A second picnic is planned for the Favorsham Park in Arvada. We’ll grill some hamburgers and hot dogs, enjoy a game of checkers or ring toss or just enjoy the fresh air.

Back again is “Wonderful Wednesday” where we dine at a fast food restaurant for a quick lunch, hop back on the bus and head to a nearby Thrift Store for some shopping. One of the Crossroad favorite outings!

Zucchini Salad INGREDIENTS FOR THE ZUCCHINI 1 1/2 lb. (about 3) zucchini, quartered and thinly sliced 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large colander, toss zucchini with salt until evenly coated. Let sit 15 minutes, then shake and drain well.

2. Meanwhile, make dressing: In a medium bowl, stir together all dressing ingredients until smooth and well combined.

3. Make pickled shallots: In a jar, add all pickled shallot ingredients. Close lid tightly and shake vigorously.

Let sit 10 minutes.

4. Assemble salad: In a large mixing bowl, toss together drained zucchini, chickpeas, and most of the dressing until evenly coated. Transfer to a serving platter, then top with pickled shallots, crumbled feta, and red pepper flakes. Add more dressing as desired.
