Adopt -A-Senior Holiday Basket Project Crossroads at Northglenn is once again proud to be a part of this year’s Colorado Gerontological Society, “Leaders in Aging” Adopt-A-Senior Holiday Basket project.

For several years, during the Christmas season, Crossroads has spread its’ joy to those most in need by purchasing and assembling food and personal care items along with presents into Holiday Baskets via the guidance and direction of CGS. Each “basket” is lovingly filled with these items and are personally delivered by us, to low-income seniors who will be spending the holidays alone and have no friends or family in the area. Knowing this can be a tough and lonely season, we are committed to spreading joy to those most in need.

Crossroads continues to be thankful for all our Blessings and we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

O N E F O OT F R O M S TA R D O M You may not be aware, but one of our Northglenn neighbors spent much of her career rubbing elbows with some very famous movie stars. Robert Mitchum, Ann Margret, Bob Hope, Mike Connors, and Clint Eastwood to name a few! But when it comes right down to brass tacks, Elaine Dunbar is just a regular gal with a fondness for cats.

Elaine worked in the movie industry for 50 years. Not in Hollywood mind you, but right here in Denver. She began her career in the Denver office of Warner Brothers and then for the lion’s share of her working life, she worked for a local motion picture equipment company that sold movie theatre equipment all over the Rocky Mountain region. That job led Elaine on regular field trips to Las Vegas where at the movie industry distribution conventions she was privileged to meet the stars.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone happy holidays and hope that you stay safe during these difficult times. With the rise of a new COVID variant and more looming restrictions, I want to assure you that we are complying with all state and local guidance in order to keep our community safe.

We are looking forward to brighter days in regards to COVID and thank you for your continued support while we navigate these new waters. Thank you all again and we hope you stay safe during this holiday season,

Her late husband, Bill, was a master pipe fitter working for Sterns and Rogers. They met at a donut shop downtown. If he ever gave her a hard time about her weight, she’d give him a look like “I’m not sure why you are complaining,” and then say to Bill “you picked me up at a donut shop!” He wasn’t always happy with a working wife that traveled. But for his 50th birthday, Elaine arranged a private screening for him and their friends of the movie “Middle Aged Crazy.” They had the whole theatre to themselves including the snack bar and all the drinks and popcorn they could eat.

Elaine is a cat lover. She misses her cat, Patches, who was extremely social. She felt Patches would be happier with someone in a larger place who could give her the attention she needed when she came to Northglenn. Fortunately, her friends were able to give Patches a great home. As for Elaine, she is enjoying Crossroads at Northglenn. She likes the small homey atmosphere and enjoys Shawna doing her hair at the beauty salon.

Next time you see Elaine, be sure to ask her about Bob Hope and the others. It’s nice to have someone nearby who rubbed elbows with the stars.

Despite the unpredictability of international travel, a group of volunteers made their way to Peru in November to help in the building of a large school complex in the town of Ica. The La Tinguiña Adventist school, when completed, will have 8 classrooms, administrative offices, restrooms and a large auditorium for indoor sports and convocations. Twenty-nine volunteers joined Maranatha’s local team of construction workers to lay block and rebar on this massive school building.

Some volunteers also provided children’s programs for the community while others created a makeshift eyeglass clinic where community members could come, try on, and choose donated reading glasses.

We begin the month with a Christmas craft that is fun and simple to make and also decorates the door for the season.

DECEMBER 3: It is National Cookie Day and we will be making cookies and having fun with some cookie trivia. We are also going to Black Hawk and trying out a new casino. We leave at 9:30am for a beautiful drive up the mountain and return home by 4:00pm.

Other outings for the month are a lunch outing to The Olive Garden on the 9th, Walmart, Dollar Tree and Target shopping trips, Wonderful Wednesday, which is a quick lunch to Anthony’s Pizza and some thrift store shopping. We have bi-weekly outings to the Anythink Library on Huron. The dates are the 9th and 23rd. This is such a lovely outing and the staff are always so helpful.

DECEMBER 16: Make sure to sign up to see “Christmas in Color at Waterworld.” This is a free event. Mark your calendars as seating is limited.

There will be plenty of Christmas-themed activities throughout the month, such as Christmas Bells, complete the Christmas scene drawing, pass the Santa, finish the Christmas story, Christmas reminiscing, Christmas Bingo, Christmas stories while sipping on some Hot Toddys and our fun 12 days before Christmas events. Gloria will post the daily activity and will also send an email to families so they can help their loved one with the participation.

DECEMBER 31: On New Year’s eve we are having a great band entertain us for our New Year’s Eve party. Light snacks, alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided along with hats, horns and a champagne toast.

Slow-Cooker Spinach Artichoke Dip This creamy, crowd-pleasing dip comes together with ease in your crock pot. Leave it in the slow cooker all party long to keep it warm for serving with perfect, melty cheese in every bite. Whole-wheat bread and raw veggie dippers allow you to dig in without the guilt.

INGREDIENTS 1 (16 ounce) bag frozen chopped spinach, thawed, squeezed dry 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese, cut into cubes 8 ounces reduced-fat sour cream ½ cup shredded whole-milk mozzarella cheese ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese ½ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground pepper 4 cups sliced vegetables, such as carrots and bell peppers 16 slices whole-wheat baguette (1/2 inch thick), toasted

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine spinach, artichoke hearts, cream cheese, sour cream, mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, salt and pepper in a 4-quart slow cooker.
