Occasions New and Improved
New and improved! It is a phrase we see regularly on the brand products that make our lives easier. Detergents of all kinds. Electronics. Automobiles. Home appliances. But professor Greg Coticchia warns us to take notice. “Like ‘open secret’, ‘alone together’, and ‘seriously funny’, ‘new and improved’ is an oxymoron. If something is new (i.e., has not existed previously), it can’t be improved! And vice versa!” He continues, “I guess it sounds better than “New but Crappier”, doesn’t it? Logically it cannot be both “new” and “improved.”

scripture at you.”
2024 is a new year. Using Coticchia’s logic, it can’t be improved. It has never been 2024 before. To be fair, Coticchia was addressing deceptive advertising practices. Hucksterism, if you will. Your 2024, while new, can be an improvement over 2023. At least over things you can control. And perhaps instead of biting off the entire year with your improvement plans, think about how you can improve smaller, more doable chunks. Choose to improve the first hour of your day for instance. Just that improvement alone could possibly change so much for the better.
“SCRIPTURE?!” replied the burglar, “She said she had an AXE and TWO 38’s!
2024 is yours to be lived and experienced. It may not seem new. You’ve done this before—a few times. But if you choose, you can make it new. You have agency to make 2024, every minute of it, what you want it to be.
