Ultrasound: A New Procedure?

In our community, where we know and care about someone with dementia, and even worry about experiencing this debilitating condition ourselves, it is always good to get a lead on any positive steps that may be available in the effort to slow or stop this disease.

60 Minutes, the long running CBS weekly TV news program, aired a story on this topic in January worth viewing. The story features Dr. Ali Rezai, a neuroscience pioneer who has developed treatments for Parkinson’s disease and other brain disorders. In the segment, we learn of Dr. Ali Rezai’s revolutionary attempt to use ultrasound to slow down the cognitive decline in three patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, something that has never been done before. Dr. Ali Rezai says “There’s no miracle cures here. It’s advancing medicine with calculated risks and pushing the frontiers.”

As reporter Sharyn Alfonso writes: “We saw a cutting-edge approach to brain surgery … with no cutting.”

The ultrasound treatment performed by Dr. Rezai essentially makes a more open path for existing medications to find their way to the actual problem and more effectively pass through a natural barrier that exists to protect the brain.

Imagine hosting 50,000 visitors a year. And the visitors are mostly kids coming to camp while also serving adults as a retreat center. That’s Camp Kulaqua’s challenge in High Springs, Florida. With that kind of traffic, you can only imagine the annual renovations needed to keep running smoothly. That’s where groups of Maranatha Volunteers come into play. Nearly every year, a group of dedicated volunteers arrive in January and turn months of work into a week of major accomplishments. This year’s team was installing roofs, mending and painting fences, walling off a new sign shop, reorganizing the camp’s nature center, and raking leaves. Some volunteers also experienced the unique task of building a hawk enclosure for Camp Kulaqua’s zoo. “It was awesome! In such a short time, they accomplished so much!” remarked Camp Kulaqua’s Coordinator for Volunteer Services, Ben Rivera.

Each year Maranatha works with organizations in the United States and ation Canada to provide volunteer labor for various construction or renovation hes, and projects at summer camps and retreat centers, schools, and churches, ode, saves thousands of dollars in labor costs.
