“At home, he barely managed to walk around the block, now we were walking 10,000 steps a day.” This is Francesca Mari’s description of her father who has Alzheimer’s while on a Daughter-Father trip to Europe. The NYTimes article, “The Trip of a Lifetime,” reveals some wonderful insights into a daughter’s understanding of memory and the positive effects of activity, especially activities surrounding old memories, can have on people suffering memory loss.
Ms. Mari doesn’t sugar coat her story. Alzheimer’s has been generational in her family. But she does manage to encourage the reader with the discoveries she made on this journey with her father. Having learned about reminiscence therapy which involves triggering the participants’ strongest memories—those formed between the ages of 10 and 30, during the so-called memory bump, when personal identity and generational identity take shape, she built a journey they could take together where this “memory bump” likely occurred in his life.
It’s a heartwarming story that, no matter where you are in the journey of memory loss, you will find helpful insights from a fellow traveler. You will find the article here with this QR code.

You know how important exercise is as we grow older. Here are a few suggestions. Start by standing outside behind your community and, with a five-pound potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out to your sides and hold them there as long as you can.
After a few weeks, move up to 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks and finally see if you can get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand while holding your arms straight out for more than a full minute!
Finally, start putting a few potatoes IN the sacks. But be warned, do not overdo it.
