Fundraiser: Alzheimer’s Association/Maranatha Volunteers

Do you like the sound of an August afternoon enjoying games of corn hole, darts, cookie grabs, golf ball shooting practice, and ducky oil grab? How about catered food from Piggin’ Out Smokehouse! Pulled pork, pulled chicken, turkey, and so much more? Good drink too for all ages. And a $10 raffle where you pick the prize you want to win!

Sounds like the state fair, doesn’t it? All this for $5 and $10 per game and $15 for a meal. And, all this to benefit two of our favorite charities: The Alzheimer’s Association and Maranatha Volunteers International (see p. 3).

No need to RSVP, and the event is open to all families and residents, senior living professionals in our area, and the public. Please put August 24 from 4 to 6pm on your calendar and join us right here at Crossroads Lakewood.

Update from Maranatha

FAMILIES DOING GREAT THINGS

Each year, Maranatha Volunteers offers at least two projects specifically for families of all kinds, usually in the summer and over the Christmas holiday. One of these mission trips recently wrapped up in the Dominican Republic with 92 volunteers serving near the capital city of Santo Domingo. Each day, two groups worked in construction at separate sites, in extreme heat and humidity, laying block walls at three different churches. Another volunteer team provided medical clinics in the community, seeing around 200 patients each day. Others led Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs for community children, and health education in various neighborhoods.

Maranatha’s Family Projects are unique in that children enjoy a day camp that includes light supervised construction, local culture, and outreach activities throughout the mission trip. And, of course, they had fun by visiting a chocolate factory, a cave with three lakes, a zoo, a water park, and a park at the beach.

“It was very satisfying to watch the kids do these things for other people, not complaining about the heat,” said day camp coordinator Chris Duckett. “You could see they weren’t afraid to make friends, step out of their comfort zone, and do their best to speak some Spanish.” To learn more, scan this code, go to www.maranatha.org or visit the Maranatha channel.

Exercises for Seniors

You know how important exercise is, as we grow older. Here are a few suggestions.

I start by standing outside behind the house and, with a five-pound potato sack in each hand, extend my arms straight out to my sides and hold them there as long as I can.

After a few weeks, I moved up to 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks and finally I got to where I could lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold my arms straight out for more than a full minute!

Next, I started putting a few potatoes IN the sacks, but I would caution you not to overdo it at this level.
