Nothing screams “summer” more than an ice cream truck. I could hear the upbeat music coming from what seemed like miles away. I remember hearing that music and feeling the panic set in of having to find mom, beg for money, and rush back to the street in that short time before the truck passed me by. Nothing made me drop what I was doing and act so fast as I did when I heard that music. Even now, as an adult, I hear that music and it brings a smile to my face. Clyde wanted to re-create this moment for the residents but initially was going to wait until next year. Another staff member said “It’s still summer, why are you waiting till next year” and that was enough to get the Ice Cream Man to stock his freezer and put on his hat and apron. Clyde started his journey on his tricycle with that music making his way around the loop in memory care. He then rode the halls of assisted living ending his endeavor on the streets of independent living. There were a variety of ice cream to choose from, but it wasn’t free. Your favorite treat cost you either a high five, a fist bump, a smile, or a self hug.

The most popular currency was a high five. Next time you hear that music and see the Ice Cream Man coming on his tricycle, be ready for a sweet treat. But remember, it will at least cost you a smile.

Maribel Wilson

Torrance, CA, is where Maribel had spent the last 30 years.

She is a new resident of Montrose and is a new member to the Crossroads management team. She brings with her a love for caring for others and 13 years of healthcare experience. She knew from the time she was a little girl that she wanted to be a nurse. Maribel started out as a CNA, then became an LPN. She is currently working on getting her RN. Her mom was ill for many years and Maribel was her primary caregiver. She worked at a skilled care facility during this time as well. For 5 years she was a treatment nurse. “I like treatments. I am not afraid to look at wounds,” says Maribel. Before she was a treatment nurse she was the charge nurse. She really enjoys the faced past environment of caregiving.

She did a short time in Arizona where she worked for a community like Crossroads that had independent living, assisted living and memory care. She was working in a management role there and really enjoyed it, but had to leave to go back to California.

She and her family moved to Montrose to be closer to her in-laws. She knew the Resident Services Director was the role for her because it was very similar to her role in Arizona, which she really liked.

When Maribel isn’t at Crossroads, she enjoys spending time with her 4 year old daughter, Breana, hiking, shopping, and traveling. Her favorite thing is seeing her daughter happy and smiling.

We, as Crossroads, are excited to welcome Maribel. Please feel free to say hello next time you are here or give her a call on the phone.

Fall is just around the corner and we at Crossroads are very excited! We love to see the leaves start to change colors and feel the air get a little bit colder.

Summer is fun, but fall is cozy. It’s the perfect time to catch up with friends and family over a cup of hot chocolate, pumpkin spiced coffee, or hot apple cider. So grab your cup of something warm for a quick catch up. First, I want to thank everyone during the transition to the new television and telephone service provider.

All the bugs have been worked out and everything should be working as expected.

Also, Crossroads has won Best of Delta County in three categories: Best Memory Care Facility, Best Senior Care Residency, and Best Senior Living Facility. Thank you for allowing us to take care of you and your loved one. We are so grateful for our entire Crossroads family! Fall reminds us to live in the moment; and enjoy our surroundings as they transition into a new state of being. It allows us time to reflect before the holidays and new year. I hope you and your loved ones are able to spend quality time together this fall reflecting on what matters most to you.

NOODLE BALL

B I R T H D AY C E L E B R AT I O N Birthdays are a big deal around here and we like to celebrate them!

Corene received a hand-made wooden doll for her birthday.

Noodle ball is one of our favorite ways to exercise. Our limbs get a bit of a workout while our blood gets moving and it challenges hand-eye coordination. It is even more fun when the staff get in on the fun game.

SPIRIT WEEK The staff and residents were invited to participate in a spirit week that consisted of different themes each day of the week. Lucy did her hair a little bit crazier than usual to show her spirit on Wacky Wednesday.

CUTTING A RUG Sometimes you hear that beat and you just must move your feet, especially when it is your favorite song.

Update from Maranatha

Keeping On in Kenya Maranatha Volunteers International’s in-country crew in Kenya has continued to build new houses of worship, school buildings, and drill water wells across the country. At the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center, new high school laboratories are nearly complete, and our crew recently finished plumbing that brings clean drinking water across the campus.

Carmel just started working on her door hanger, which turned into a pretty good lookin’ scarecrow.

Maranatha previously drilled a well here, and now fresh water comes directly out of the taps in bathrooms, showers, and staff housing buildings throughout the property. The young women were astonished that they could turn a tap and have clean running water for a shower. Our well drilling team will be drilling at least six more wells in the near future.

Maranatha has been working in Kenya since 2016, building houses of worship, schools, and water wells. More than 650 structures have been completed so far. To see a comprehensive report on Maranatha, please visit m a r a n a t h a . o r g .

During the month of October we will be exploring and celebrating different cultures. October 6th we will celebrate American Indian heritage, October 13th

Spiritual practices are very important to majority of the residents, so every Wednesday at 1pm prayer groups meet.

This is a time to read a devotional, speak about related experiences, and pray as a group.

we will celebrate Hawaiian heritage, and on October 20th we will celebrate Irish heritage. At each occasion we will experience food, drink, music, and fun related to the lifestyle of that heritage.

Reminiscing about the past is a great way to get residents engaged in a conversation and it provides positive stimulation. Every Saturday the residents gather to drink coffee and reminisce.

Wear your best costume on October 27th for the Halloween Costume Party. Come dressed to impress because the residents will be the judge of the best costume.

On October 25th the residents will be painting something “spooky” in preparation for the upcoming Halloween holiday.

There are many impromptu activities that take place during the day. Fun things like nail painting and more physical activities like chair volleyball, bean bag toss, and outdoor walks.

of the baguette slices. Place on a lined baking tray. Sprinkle with extra parmesan. Set aside.

1. Preheat oven to 425° and line a large baking tray with baking paper. Drizzle the cut sides of the pumpkin with 1 tbs oil, then place, cut-side down, on prepared tray on top of thyme sprigs.

5. Remove vegetable mix from the oven and replace with the crouton tray. Roast for 8 minutes until golden and bubbling.

3. Remove the vegetable mixture from the oven and add the onion to the tray. Enclose the garlic in foil and add to the baking tray. Roast for a further 30 minutes or until tender.

6. To make the soup, strip the thyme leaves from stalk and add to a large saucepan. Scoop out the pumpkin seeds and discard.

Scoop out the pumpkin flesh and place in the saucepan with the carrots and bacon, if using. Peel the onion and garlic, and add to the pan. Add any remaining pan juices. Use a stick blender to break down slightly, then add the stock and 1½ cups water. Blend until smooth. Stir in the creme fraiche. Season to taste and cook over medium heat until warmed through.

4. Meanwhile, for the croutons, combine the parmesan, butter, fennel seeds, chili flakes, coriander seeds and thyme in a bowl.

Season. Stir to combine. Spread the butter mixture over 1 side

7. Transfer to serving bowls. Top with extra creme fraiche and micro herbs. Season with pepper and sprinkle with extra chili flakes. Serve with spiced parmesan croutons.

2. Place the carrots and bacon in the middle of a large piece of foil. Sprinkle over the fennel seeds and chili flakes. Drizzle with the remaining 1 tbs oil. Add to the baking tray and roast for 30 minutes.

The Easiest Pumpkin Soup You Will Ever Make!

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE SOUP 1 (about 3.5lbs) butternut pumpkin, halved 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil 8 thyme sprigs 2 large carrots 4 slices cured and smoked streaky bacon (optional) ½ tsp fennel seeds ½ tsp chili flakes, plus extra to serve 1 onion (unpeeled) 3 garlic cloves (unpeeled) 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock 2 tbs creme fraiche (plus extra to serve) Micro herbs (optional), to serve
