One of the things I enjoy most about Crossroads is the way we support and work with other organizations in our community. One of the organizations that we work very closely with is HopeWest and Hospice, from supporting events, to collaboratively providing care for our residents who are also their clients. In lieu of the Denim and Diamonds Gala, HopeWest hosted a corn hole tournament that we took part in.

The proceeds from this fundraiser went to their grief program that supports kids. Our team, the Crossroads Cross Stitchers, made up of Edith and Meghann, didn’t win first place, but they sure had a great time. We are looking forward to brushing up on our throwing skills and bringing our A-game for next year’s tournament.

We are also gunning for the Team Spirit Award that went to Colorow this year. Watch out for the Crossroads Cross Stitchers at the 2022 HopeWest Corn Hole Tournament!

Clyde Wright

As a 6 year old boy, Clyde had his first experience with dining at his mom’s owned and operated truck stop.

The seating capacity was only three picnic tables, but the lot was always filled with 60 to 70 trucks who were stopped for some good home cookin’. At the age of 16, Clyde took a job as a dishwasher at a restaurant, and one year later he was running the kitchen. During his 20 years of being in the food business he has owned two restaurants; one in Branson, Missouri and the other right here in Delta called Clyde’s Café. Clyde has spent the majority of his life in the food service industry in one way or another, and we are glad that he is now part of the Crossroads family as the Dietary Director.

“My goal is to make Crossroads a gem. I want to give the residents the best dining experience they can have in this type of setting,” says Clyde. He has brought new ideas and teachings to the dietary staff and the quality of the meals has improved. The residents are regularly complimenting the kitchen on the tasty cuisine. Clyde is passionate about providing not only good tasting food, but healthy food. He likes to make everything in-house, including the sandwich buns. Clyde says “making food from scratch not only tastes better, but it is better for you.”

Clyde joined the team only a few months ago and he is already saying, “I love my job”. We hope you are able to come meet Clyde in person and join us for a meal very soon.

It is never easy to be separated from loved ones, especially during a pandemic. Here at Crossroads at Delta, we recognize the importance of keeping our residents engaged. We strive to promote social interaction, while keeping residents safe. We are dedicated to not only serving our residents, but building personal relationships with them.

It’s the little things that our staff can do to help. Whether it’s bringing them their coffee, or sitting down for 10 minutes to talk about their day, our focus is connecting with residents as if they were family. We can never replace family and friends, but we can make the sun shine a little brighter for them while they wait for the doors to be open once again.

Raise Your Heart Rate by Lowering Your Blood Pressure If you are finding your blood pressure running a little higher these days, there are simple steps you can take to get things back to normal.

EXERCISE You may read that and think “Oh my, you sound like my doctor.” But she’s right. And you’ll want to talk to your doctor about what limits you may have, but increasing your heart rate through normal activities approved by your doctor will help lower your blood pressure. Our goal is to raise our heartbeat—not from more episodes of Peyton Place, but from exercise.

If your doctor approves, work out with Edith or Meghan at all of their aerobics activities. This will move the blood through your body, oxygenating your blood and adding color in your skin, tone to

your body, and well, just make you feel better.

You’ll probably sleep better too.

As often as you can, take a walk. Walk the long way around the building to get to breakfast. In fact, if the weather is good, go outside and walk around the building to get to breakfast. Do it for lunch too. Even supper. Go at a pace you are comfortable with and go with a friend. But add a few steps to each of your activities and you’ll be on your way to better health.

Your goal should be 30 minutes, as many times per week as you can.

And remember, you are doing this for you. You are at a time of your life where the time you have is all yours. Go for it. You deserve to feel well. Lowering your blood pressure might just be the best part of every day.

Upcoming from Maranatha Maranatha, a non-profit that provides short term volunteer opportunities worldwide, benefits directly from projects that are sponsored by Crossroads Senior Living. In June Maranatha volunteers ventured back into service at a remote school campus in Oregon.

Among the tasks tackled on this project were painting the exterior and interior of the girls dorm, making miscellaneous repairs in the boys dorm, installing

trim in a staff house, and landscaping. Volunteers also worked at nearby Camp Umpqua, installing pine siding in the lodge and constructing a duplex cabin.

Wherever volunteers were stationed, project coordinator and Maranatha board member, Ed Jensen, noticed them doing extra work beyond what was assigned. “These aren’t the kind of people who sit around and enjoy the ambiance,” said Jensen. “They saw the need, jumped on it, and took care of it.”

For first-time volunteer Ron Gadreault, not only was the work rewarding, but the community he joined was special as well. “I didn’t realize how much of a family it becomes, and how much people mean to you,” said Gadreault. “That is how Maranatha seems to be, a family helping others. Everybody cares about each other and cares about the project, and we work together as a family works together. And you get kind of sad when you have to leave.”

The staff, Shawna and Caelee, shared bible verses and ended the activity in prayer.

Memory Care

S U N C AT C H E R C R A F T S Summer is the time to talk about the sun, which we have done quite a bit around here lately. The residents enjoyed creating beautiful sun catchers that are now hanging in the windows. Fresh flowers and various sequins were used to make the catchers glimmer and sparkle in the sun.

In honor of all those who have served, a celebration including live music took place on Memorial Day. It started with a BBQ for lunch. Edith had a Missing Man table set up and she recited “The Missing Soldier” poem by an unknown author followed by a toast to the missing soldier.

Roberta and the Brothers played a broad mix of music and had everyone tapping their toes and even some dancers got to their feet. The residents really enjoyed being outside and celebrating and remembering the holiday with their fellow Crossroads friends. There were smiles all around.

I N CO R P O R AT I N G PA S T HOBBIES Our activity program strives to incorporate past likes and hobbies into daily activities. Naomi used to enjoy crocheting and knitting in her younger years. She isn’t able to create beautiful works of art, but she still gets joy from working with yarn. The feel of the yarn in her hands, and the memories she has of being crafty in her past, still puts a smile on her face.

SOAKING UP THE SUN The morning and evening sun feels just perfect. The afternoon sun is a bit intense making afternoon soaking a bit short.

Archie and Ida are good friends who enjoy each other’s company and are both fans of being outdoors. Sitting in the courtyard provides some shade, making the outdoors more comfortable.

I M P R O M P T U S TA F F CONCERT Sometimes our performers have unforeseen circumstances arise and have to reschedule their performance. On this particular day, the reschedule was very close to “go time,” so, instead of canceling the outdoor concert, the staff stepped up to the stage and sang some songs with and for the residents. It wasn’t quite the concert we were expecting, but we sure had a fantastic time.

Sometimes you have the most fun with the unexpected, unplanned events.

IT’S HOT, HOT, HOT! Staying hydrated is always a top priority, but it is even harder to stay hydrated when the temperatures are high. Edith, the assisted living Activity Director, is pictured taking individual activities to the residents as well as a nice cold beverage. Every afternoon a hydration cart makes its way around both assisted living and memory care offering an assortment of beverages and sometimes, a nice cold treat like a popsicle.

AN ADDED TOUCH Jeanie Ryan, Adult Nurse Practitioner, meets with all the assisted living and memory care residents when she is here a couple times a month. She is such a blessing and a great addition to our Crossroads team. The residents really enjoy their interactions with her and some of the families have had the pleasure of meeting her as well. Here, Jeanie is pictured with Betty after they have met for the first time.

Memory Care

One of the most popular activities are ice cream socials. The next one will be happening on July 13th. It is a great treat to beat the heat!

July 2nd we will be creating our own 4th of July decorations to celebrate America turning 245 years old.

July 7th we will be celebrating National We will be having 3 movie matinées this month. The residents choose a movie and we play it on the large activity TV. We pop fresh popcorn in our little popcorn machine, pass out movie theatre candies, and wash it all down with soda. Who needs to go to the theatre?

Strawberry Sundae Day with nothing but delicious strawberry sundaes. It will be a perfect treat for this hot weather.

Our second fishing outing is coming up on the 26th of July. We will take a trip to Confluence Lake in the morning and see who can catch the biggest fish! For those residents who are not able to attend the fishing trip, we will have a fishing activity outside in our own courtyard.

On July 21st the Red Hat Society will gather for their fun monthly luncheon in their red hats and purple attire while the men will meet for their special luncheon. The women enjoy their ladies’ lunch and the men enjoy some “manly” talk.

Zucchini Salad INGREDIENTS FOR THE ZUCCHINI 1 1/2 lb. (about 3) zucchini, quartered and thinly sliced 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large colander, toss zucchini with salt until evenly coated. Let sit 15 minutes, then shake and drain well.

2. Meanwhile, make dressing: In a medium bowl, stir together all dressing ingredients until smooth and well combined.

3. Make pickled shallots: In a jar, add all pickled shallot ingredients. Close lid tightly and shake vigorously.

Let sit 10 minutes.

4. Assemble salad: In a large mixing bowl, toss together drained zucchini, chickpeas, and most of the dressing until evenly coated. Transfer to a serving platter, then top with pickled shallots, crumbled feta, and red pepper flakes. Add more dressing as desired.
