We are so excited to be hosting the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence who will be training our staff with the Virtual Dementia Experience created by Second Wind Dreams. This life changing experience simulates the effects of dementia to give caregivers the opportunity to know what a person with dementia faces on a daily basis. The tour gives the caregiver a better understanding of the challenges people encounter, as well as empowers them to provide better care and support. The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence received a grant to provide this training and we are so blessed to have our staff go through this simulation. If you ever have the opportunity to go through a virtual dementia experience, I encourage you to do so.

Different organizations are able to host these events throughout the year, so keep an out for the next one. Because of COVID, this training is reserved for our staff members, but we hope to host some trainings open for the public as soon as regulations allow.

Losing Life’s Partner leaves a void too deep to know where to start,

to Crossroads he went without writing for a couple weeks. After his computer was all set up in his new home, he sat down and the words started flowing. “I surprised myself how easily I was able to write this,” says Codd. He enjoys sharing his writing with others and he hopes all the readers will relish his poem.

Doing what you can fills the days much better than waiting in need.

Already I feel this choice is another gift from God as my life lives on, Another of those unseen gifts that has driven my charmed life so long.

Three of us from Otter Pond are neighbors again for our final days, So, wish us well as we enjoy this new neighborhood in so many ways.

Executive Director Bulletin Staying hydrated is essential for our residents, especially during this ridiculously hot summer in Delta. Our team has come up with ways to encourage fluids without the monotonous “drink water”. We serve ice cream, popsicles, water, and lemonade on our hydration carts. Our managers make their rounds with the hydration carts several times a

day as a gentle reminder. Education is also key to staying hydrated. Unfortunately, coffee, soda, drinks with high sodium and drinks with high caffeine content can all dehydrate our bodies. We know how much our residents love their coffee, but it might be worth a shot to try our decaffeinated coffee. As we age, dehydration can lead to severe compli-

cations including UTI’s, falls with major injuries, and decreased kidney function. I challenge all of our residents, families and staff to drink 6-8 glasses of water every day to stay safe and healthy!

Update from Maranatha Peru Welcomes First Volunteers in 15 Months Elmer Barbosa was nervous.. In just a matter of days, 11 volunteers were scheduled to arrive in Lima, Peru, where he is Maranatha Volunteers International’s country director. He was anxious because this would be the first time he and his team would welcome volunteers to Peru after a 15 month absence.

“It was supposed to be crazy in 2020. We were ready to receive about 400 volunteers during the months of March and April alone,” says Barbosa, the memories of preparation still fresh in his mind. “But then it was interrupted.” The interruption, caused by COVID, lasted for well over a year.

On June 17, when Barbosa caught sight of the very first Maranatha volunteer arriving at the

airport, he couldn’t stop smiling. “It was awesome to finally see them coming back.” The small team, composed of brand new and veteran volunteers, began immediately. They worked quickly, finishing the back wall of a large school that doubles as a church and community Center in Ica, a town in southern Peru. Unexpectedly, the team even finished work on a second wall! When completed, the school will be called La Tinguiña.

Then, before he knew it, the project was over.

Volunteers were packing up to head home or over to the excursion at Machu Picchu. On the last day, after receiving negative COVID tests for all the volunteers, dropping everyone off at the airport, and waving their goodbyes, the team in Peru exhaled.

“Having [the volunteers] back was special and at the same time it was a great responsibility,” says Barbosa. The team’s texts to each other said it all. ‘Yes we did it!’ God kept everyone safe. It was nice to finally be back.”

From 2004-2006, more than 3,000 Maranatha volunteers landed in Peru, constructing nearly 100 churches and schools. In 2019, Maranatha returned to Peru. Who says you need to go to the salon for a nice manicure and to feel pampered? That gets done right here in house by our wonderful staff. Diane likes getting her fingernails painted and she feels pretty good afterwards.

FISHING TRIP

GROWING AND C U LT I VAT I N G P L A N T S Working with the soil was a way of life for many of our residents in our rural community. They may have owned a ranch, farm, or orchard.

Maybe they had a garden and preserved the produce for the winter.

Some may have enjoyed caring for beautiful flowers. Our residents may not be cultivating plants like they have in their past, but it is still something they enjoy doing. Larry used to live on an orchard and keeping busy with taking care of the landscape is what he spends most of days doing.

The fishing trip to Confluence Lake ended up with no fishing, but rather a nice walk and just enjoying the beautiful place we call home. It was so nice getting out into the fresh air and just being still.

A S P O N TA N E O U S , UNEXPECTED VISITOR Sometimes we have the most fun at an impromptu event or outing.

In this case, we had a fun visitor that made everyone laugh, or at least brought a smile to their face.

Wouldn’t a dancing gorilla make you crack a smile?

61 YEARS OF MARRIAGE At the noon meal served in the community cottage, our Dietary Director, Clyde, led a nice toast to Bill and Trudy Wason who were celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary. The Crossroads staff wish you both continued love and happiness for many years to come.

Penne with SunDried Tomato Pesto

I M P R O V I N G H E A LT H AND FITNESS Here is a dish that is perfect for a sunny summer day. Add this Mediterranean special to your summer fun.

Morning exercise is a habitual routine for many of the residents.

Not only is it good for your heart and muscles, but it is good for your mood and mental health.

Our Sit N’ Fit exercise classes are low impact and a safe way to get our bodies moving.

INGREDIENTS 12 ounces penne pasta

If you aren’t familiar, corn hole is typically a lawn game where a team tosses bags of corn into a hole on a raised board. The way points are accrued varies, but a bag in the hole will gain your team 3 points and a bag on the board will gain your team 1 point. Corn hole has become a popular activity around here. Annie is bound and determined to toss her bag in the whole while her friends, Archie and Mary, observe her efforts.

OUTDOOR CONCERT WITH NICK Nick Carozza is one of the newer entertainers to perform at Crossroads. He plays more jazz, rock-type music across all eras. The residents have come to enjoy him and they wished him well at his last concert.

He will be going back to school this fall but assures us he will let us know when he is back in town and can come perform for us.

1 (8.5-ounce) jar sun-dried tomatoes packed in olive oil 2 garlic cloves Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup (packed) fresh basil leaves ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan

DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until tender but still firm to the bite, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes.

Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid.

2. Meanwhile, blend the sun-dried tomatoes and their oil, garlic, salt and pepper to taste, and basil in a food processor and blend until the tomatoes are finely chopped.

Transfer the tomato mixture to a large bowl. Stir in the Parmesan.

3. Add the pasta to the pesto and toss to coat, adding enough reserved cooking liquid to moisten.

Season the pasta to taste, with salt and pepper, and serve.

August 10th will be a fun filled day as we will be heading to the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose. The museum is located on the original homestead site of Chief Ouray, who was the leader of the Ute people, and his wife, Chipeta.

August 6th we will be going out for ice cream followed by a scenic drive. The cold treat and air-conditioned bus will be a fun adventure on a hot day.

There are quite a few activities that happen on a weekly basis and baking is one of those activities.

We make anything from bread to cookies, although the baking of sweets is preferred.

A body in motion stays in motion and that is one of the many reasons we provide opportunity for exercise. Along with morning exercise classes, we also have afternoon walks 7 days a week. This will continue for the month of August.

Towards the end of the month, on August 20th we will pack our lunch

One of our favorite performers, Paul Chamberlain, will be the headliner for our next outdoor concert on the morning of August 26th.

Today in History is a group discussion on the events that took place on that particular day, but in the past. This engaging group meets every morning.

Every Thursday morning there is Communion for those who partake in that practice with the Catholic church.

Every Sunday morning there is a nondenomination church service for anyone who would like to attend.
