As mentioned in last week’s edition here is more detail of the planned walking / cycling track around our lakefront in Cromwell.

Around Pisa Moorings the existing track will be formalised and built to meet the NZ Cycle Trail Grade 1 standard; an easy gradient with a smooth consistent surface, wide enough to ensure safe multi directional passing for riders and walkers.

There will be no fences in the Pisa Moorings area.

Pisa Moorings to Lowburn Cutting there will be a new track between the 4wd track and lake front. Protected by a low fence to enable people access but not vehicles. Pedestrian access at selected locations, like the 45th Parallel.

Brothers and Venturers from the Cromwell Scout Group, Jack and George Taylor are about to head off to the 14th New Zealand Venture in Kaiwaka, Northland. Dad and Scout Leader Justin has decided that the boys can’t have all the fun so is going along to help as a volunteer leader too.

So, what is Venture? It’s like a Scout Jamboree but is for older youth aged 14-18 and only happens once every 3 years. Now imagine 1,000 teenagers from Australia, New Zealand and further afield coming together for 12 full-on days. That is serious FUN and worth fundraising for!

Participants get to choose their favourite Expedition which goes for half of Venture.

petrol head with ‘Start your Engine’ where he will learn the techniques of Car Club style autocross driving; Justin will be busy with a ‘Pick n Mix’ multiadventure in the beautiful Bay of Islands; while George will be stranded on ‘Sunset Island’ where he will have to put his

Indian and Kiwi students and teachers exploring range of water issues A group of Indian students and teachers and their Kiwi counterparts are this week immersing themselves in a range of waterrelated issues in Central Otago as part of a global leadership and sustainability initiative.

Otago Polytechnic is proud to be involved in the Untouched World Foundation’s Waterwise Leadership and Global Citizenship Programme, an intensive, week-long programme that features an “intergenerational korero” at its Cromwell Campus on Friday 14 December.

Students and teachers predominantly from Otago secondary schools and tertiary institutions have been joined by students and representatives from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) and partners of its YESPeace Youth Network in Asia.

This week’s activities include visits to lakes and rivers, vineyards and orchards, as well as discussions with water and land use experts, insights into tourism and irrigation pressures, and interviews with locals.

The collaborative programme aims to establish a New Zealand-India youth leadership exchange programme with a focus on fostering youth leadership, which is a key aspect of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Global Action Programme.

“Otago Polytechnic believes educating youth on key issues facing society, unlocking their unique leadership potential and inspiring

them to become active change-makers is vital,” says Marc Doesburg, Director: Globalisation, Otago Polytechnic.

“Initiatives such as this Leadership and Global Citizenship Programme positively impact on our world.”

Other key partners include Otago Regional Council, Otago Community Trust and Contact Energy, with further support from Education New Zealand, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Ngai Tahu.

“We want the next generation to have the knowledge and capabilities to live, work and learn globally,” says John Goulter, Education New Zealand General Manager Stakeholders and Communications.

“Helping young people develop into global citizens is a focus of the cross-government International Education Strategy launched in August of this year, and initiatives like this are an excellent example of how we can support this goal. We look forward to seeing how those involved apply what they learn – we’ll be following their progress.”

Untouched World’s Waterwise programme enables youth to interact with all players in the water resource chain, from primary energy players, through to farming, recreation, cultural and conservation interests, all of whom are involved in sustainable water management.

An “Acts of Kindness’” Campaign is also being developed and will involve MGIEP and Untouched World Foundation mobilising youth in partner institutions to foster meaningful exchange of ideas, knowledge and action towards the achievement of UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.

“This understanding, combined with action, will help achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 4.7(Global Citizenship and Education for Sustainable Development), and SDG 14 (Life Under Water),” says Deepika.

To the Editor, Last year I attended the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School and learned enough about flying in 2 weeks to be able to fly solo for the first time. I promised myself then that I would go back to take advantage of the intensive training and quality instructors. Needless to say, I am rapt to have been accepted as a returning student this January.

Flying doesn’t come cheap, so I am beyond happy to also have received grants from Cromwell Lions Club Charitable Trust and Trustpower Lend a Hand Foundation. Thank you very much for supporting me to advance my aviation training. It’s neat to have your backing.

Teenage US Sprintcar Ace Part of ActionPacked Racing at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway

Only recently turned 17 and already one of the most acclaimed stars of US sprintcar racing, Michael ‘Buddy’ Kofoid, gets his first taste of New Zealand clay at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Saturday, December 29 when he mixes it with many of the South Island’s top drivers competing in round four of the $100,000 2018/19 Hydraulink Sprintcar War of the Wings (Wow).

He’ll race again at the January 1 meeting and on several other South Island tracks in preparation for competing in the Civil Construction 2019 NZ Sprintcar Title in Cromwell on February 1 and 2.

Even more amazing, Buddy first got behind the wheel of an 850 – 900 horsepower sprintcar at 11, too young to race in his home state of California. Coincidently, two of the drivers who have competed against Buddy in the States are first and third on the Wow leader board coming to Cromwell – Former Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway ‘t’ driver, 2015 1NZ and defending Wow champion, Jamie ‘Duff Man’ Duff (299 pts) and ‘t’ driver Daniel Anderson (253 pts) who is responsible for bringing Buddy to New Zealand.

Jamie, at 28 is one of a crop of New Zealand sprintcar young guns, says he’s always been wowed by the way Buddy runs, catches and passes top ‘World of Outlaw’ drivers – “He has a welldeserved reputation”.

A jetboat marathon racer who in 2011 was wooed over to sprintcars by Jason ‘Capt’ Scott, a fellow ‘t’ driver and current Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway promoter, Daniel has since his first sprintcar season been escaping New Zealand winters to race in the States and Canada where he confesses to never beating Buddy who he says is a very clean driver with great tactical vision.

Daniel’s strong connection with North America goes back to his jetboat racing days and motors built by British Columbia-based Jim Richmond who

O’Callaghan who dropped down the leader board to 8th with 204 points. Daniel’s 7th place was enough to keep him third on the board with young ‘t’ driver Jayden Dodge’s feature race win lifting him to 6th place overall.

As much as sprintcars will be a big attraction at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Saturday, December 29, there’s plenty of variety and excitement among support classes that include low, wide and fast saloons competing in Day 1 of the always hotly contested Southern Saloon Series. The annual Christmas Champs has attracted good fields of big horsepower Super Saloons, fast and furious open wheeler Six Shooters, surprisingly exciting Productions and always fun to watch Youth Ministocks with 12 to 16 year olds showing how it’s done. currently builds engines for Buddy and will be coming out to watch him compete for the NZ Sprintcar Title. Before then though, Buddy’s sprintcar owner and former champion driver, Doug Rutz, will be flying in from Canada for his young star. For the past two seasons, Doug has been visiting to New Zealand to support Daniel’s racing but as owner and chef of Te Anau’s The Ranch Bar & Grill, Daniel says with a laugh that he believes the big attraction for Doug is less about sprintcars and more about The Ranch’s burgers and blue cod.

Daniel is careful not to oversell Buddy, with a reminder that track conditions between North America and New Zealand can be very different, that he’ll be driving a borrowed sprintcar and South Island drivers will definitely give him a run for the money. On Saturday, December 15 at Ruapuna for War of the Wings round 3, Daniel himself had to contend with a very slick track that in the feature race contributed to taking out fellow ‘t’ driver and sprintcar young gun, ‘Slamming’ Sammy

And that’s just Saturday!

‘Central Otago’s Fastest Family Show on Earth’ continues on Tuesday, Jan 1 with all classes racing in the New Year’s Champs which will be run to a GP format of two heats and a final, not forgetting it will be the final of the 2019 South Saloon Series.

Gates open at 4pm for trackside parking with racing starts at 6pm both days.

Before and during the night’s racing, make time to visit the pits (children must be accompanied by an adult) to meet drivers, their crews and also collect free posters. If Buddy achieves the dream of following his hero Ayrton Senna into Formula 1, it might be that you’ll be able to proudly show his autograph signed when he raced at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway.

Tourism Central Otago confirms senior line up for new Tourism Advisory Board Editorial and photos supplied

Having launched a new tenyear strategy to guide the development of tourism in Central Otago, the Central Otago District Council has confirmed the appointment of a six-strong Tourism Advisory Board.

“We attracted an incredibly strong field of applicants from across New Zealand and around Central Otago,” Tourism Central Otago General Manager Glenys Coughlan said. “We have set a very clear direction for the region’s tourism development and we so we had a very clear understanding of the kind of skills that we needed at a governance level.”

Mayor Tim Cadogan will join the Board along with local tourism entrepreneur David Ritchie, who alongside his wife Andy has transformed Olivers in Clyde.

David has recently taken over as chair of the Central Otago Heritage Trust, which marries well with promoting Central Otago’s heritage offering.

Sue Sullivan, CEO of Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ), joins as Board Chair.

“Sue has done an extraordinary job of transforming CINZ and has extensive tourism experience. I am confident that Sue will make a strong contribution to helping us to realise our goals,” Ms Coughlan said.

Also joining the board is Dylan Rushbrook, who has recently returned to Central Otago after an impressive career in international sales and marketing with some New Zealand’s leading hotel operations.

“Dylan’s interest in capability building and helping operators to realise their full potential will also be a real asset to TCO,” Ms Coughlan said.

Tourism New Zealand and Auckland International Airport, would “bring a much stronger international perspective to our thinking” she said.

The final member of the board is Dr Susan Mackenzie, a lecturer in the Department of Tourism at University of Otago and a member of the World Tourism Forum.

“We wanted to ensure that we were balancing our destination marketing skills with our destination management skills around the Board table and so we are delighted to confirm Susan’s appointment,” Ms Coughlan said. “Susan has a keen interest in managing the relationship between visitors and host communities.”

The first meeting of the Advisory Board will be held early in 2019 with quarterly meetings thereafter.

CODC CEO Sanchia Jacobs said that she was looking forward to working with the new Board.

“Tourism is a vital part of our region’s economy and we want to ensure that we develop the industry in a way that plays to our assets while being true to our communities.

“I am especially pleased that the Board is considering establishing some industry working groups to drive some of the key projects outlined in the Central Otago Tourism Strategy. It is important that we engender a high level of operator engagement because we have much that we can achieve by working more collaboratively,” Ms Jacobs said.

“I am also keen to see Ngai Tahu play a role in the development of tourism in Central Otago and as part of a broader deepening of our relationship with iwi.”
