SLT Parent Evening – 18th June

Duke of Edinburgh – by Abi Harold The weekend began with a quick brief and equipment check which resulted in Connor Manning losing the 20 thousand bottles of Lucozade he had over packed. It was a fairly bright and optimistic start to the long walk ahead. As part of Mr Rix’s group, I can confirm that the first day was filled with laughter but sadly it also contained blisters, sun burn and a significant lack of ice cream. During the first day, there was a Dr Baker shaped hole in our heart but when we arrived at camp, we were told that he would be coming along on the second day. We set up camp and began to cook our pasta, couscous and super noodles over a trangia while the teachers enjoyed their barbeque. The next day saw the greatly anticipated arrival of Dr Baker. This was also the day we were going to walk the majority of the journey on our own! We got off to a brilliant start, lost the second we left the campsite. Other groups were significantly more suited to this type of activity – Bailey proved himself to be a great dictator and his group did not get lost once. Some of his team members vaguely recall calling him some choice names. Later that day, we were finally joined by the beloved Dr Baker who lead us to disaster, taking us in a wrong direction and making us walk in circles. Not only did we end up walking an extra 3 miles, but during the time we were lost, it also started to rain. It was at this point, Dr Baker was picked up and driven, in a warm dry car, to join another group. It was at this point that Marcus Shea started chanting “RIX! RIX! RIX!”, having realised that our dear Mr Rix (who walked with us on day 1) would never have allowed us to get lost! After re-planning our route, we were able to make up some time and our spirits were kept high by the Nicole Bullocks’ singing. Dr Baker re-joined our group and was immediately told to “Get back in the car!” but he ignored this and walked with us for the last 30 minutes. We arrived at the meeting point at 3.30pm (3 minutes late) were all the other groups were waiting for us. We were bruised, tired but we were happy. It was an eventful weekend but it will not be forgotten soon!
