2023 IMPACT REPORT

A MOVEMENT OF HOPE

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Friends of Cristo Rey:

“May our hope be so outrageously bold that we are afraid people will laugh at us if they knew what we hoped for!” - Chair Emeritus John P. Foley, S.J. For the last 27 years our dreams and vision for this movement have grown and become even more audacious. Here are just a few examples of our expansion of the dream of a quality Cristo Rey education for students across the country this year: • Cristo Rey Miami opened as the 38th member school in the Cristo Rey Network. • We celebrated inaugural graduations at Cristo Rey Richmond and Cristo Rey St. Viator Las Vegas. • Cristo Rey alumni experienced record college persistence and completion rates across our 75+ University Partners that enroll an increasing percentage of our graduates. • Students earned $58 million across 3,251 Corporate and Nonprofit Partners towards their own education. • Our Corporate Work Study teams continue to climb back from pandemic conditions and are leading the way in meeting the workforce needs of today and the future. These remarkable milestones serve as confirmation that the Cristo Rey mission is full of hope, translating into real impact amplified by the generosity of our partners. As we look to the future, we are encouraged by the impression our alumni are making on the world. Their stories along with the stories of current and future students of Cristo Rey inspire us to increase our impact. We are convinced that the Cristo Rey model of education and spirit of innovation will continue to cause people to laugh at our audacity and admire our results. On behalf of our 12,300 students, 28,000+ graduates, and 39 local school teams, thank you for your belief in and support of this amazing Catholic mission. Together, we will continue to hope in outrageously bold ways. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2022-2023 High-Impact Value to Schools As the engine of excellence, accountability, and growth, the Cristo Rey Network national office exists to support member schools in their efforts to fulfill our shared mission. As part of the national office’s ongoing self-assessment and commitment to continuous improvement, the Annual Leadership Survey invites school leaders to evaluate our effectiveness to ensure maximum value and impact. In March 2023, 98% of respondents felt that the national office meets or exceeds expectations. 2023 Annual Meeting Collaboration and community remain at the heart of the Cristo Rey Network’s efforts to deliver on our promise to the young people whom we accompany on their educational journey. More than 340 Cristo Rey Network school leaders gathered April 18-21, 2023 for an impactful Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Our host school, Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School, partnered with the national office team to plan for a week of learning and dialogue among school leaders, religious sponsors, and board members. Celebrating a Legacy Leader During the Annual Meeting, then Board Chair John O’Shea presented The Spirit of Cristo Rey Award to President and CEO Elizabeth Goettl as she neared the conclusion of 14 years of service to the Cristo Rey movement. Furthermore, Elizabeth was recognized by the National Catholic Education Association and named honoree of NCEA’s President’s Award for her significant career contributions of advancing the mission of Catholic education in the United States. Appointment of New President and CEO In November 2022, the Board of Directors announced Kelby G. Woodard as the next President and CEO, effective July 1, 2023. Having served as the Founding President at Cristo Rey Dallas College Prep for six years, he established a high-performing school enrolling 470 students in a stateof-the-art campus. In 2018, Kelby was elected by peer Cristo Rey school Presidents to serve on the Cristo Rey Network Board and continued that appointment through June 30, 2023.

Cristo Rey offers more light, more love, more hope - to our students and to all of us who are privileged to contribute to the effort. It has been my honor to serve.” - Elizabeth Goettl

LEADING AND LEARNING

As we work to ensure the college readiness of every Cristo Rey student through four years of high-quality instruction, extraordinary school leadership is essential to student success. The national office Leading and Learning team is building the capacity of principals and faculty to be laser-focused on the instructional core - the relationship between teachers, students, and the content. Central to our work is helping school teams implement evidence-based strategies and practices that result in greater student achievement. Philanthropic support from donors is animating these comprehensive efforts underway. We are deepening and scaling implementation efforts with Dr. Candice Bocala on the Internal Coherence Framework (ICF), a systems thinking approach to assessing and developing conditions for student and adult learning in a school. After three years of foundational work, participating school teams are engaged in robust professional development programming grounded in the Internal Coherence Framework.

In July 2022 we launched a network-wide literacy initiative to accelerate student achievement in English Language Arts (ELA). Through a lead gift from The Howley Foundation, we engaged ThinkCERCA to implement and scale proven programmatic supports and instructional materials to accelerate student achievement. With an inaugural cohort of four schools, we anticipate engaging 30+ schools across four cohorts in the next five years. Also in partnership with The Howley Foundation, our commitment to foster students’ mathematical thinking and learning with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative continues to expand. The Putting MATH Education to Work program is based on high performance expectations, ongoing professional development, examining student work, and improved math instruction. We began implementing the program in 2018 with our first cohort of six schools. Today, there are 28 schools across five cohorts providing innovative math instruction to 8,500 students.

The academic curriculum helped me understand my passion for philosophy and be able to connect it to my interest in cognitive science, later leading to my acceptance to Columbia University.” Silvana ’23, Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School

CORPORATE WORK STUDY Through Cristo Rey schools’ engagement with 3,251 Corporate and Nonprofit Partners, our dynamic educational model placed our students in professional jobs last school year. Collectively, students earned $58 million towards their own private education, while gaining valuable skills, confidence, and aspirations, along with professional mentorships that would otherwise not be accessible in the traditional classroom. As our schools continue to climb back from pandemic conditions, the national office Corporate Work Study (CWS) team is standardizing practices and scaling new and evolving workplace trends, including remote and hybrid work management styles, expectations of entry level workforce, and the competencies necessary for Cristo Rey students to thrive in today’s work environment. Designing Sustained, Job-Embedded Professional Development A wide-range of programmatic offerings and support for CWS teams are tailored to respond to the needs of each school in order to continuously develop a vibrant and rewarding experience for students and partners. To mobilize new talent across the Network, our CWS Navigators program includes one-on-one virtual and inperson mentoring between CWS leaders network-wide.

Leveraging New Technology A major grant from an anonymous foundation optimized Work Studyforce, our custom platform for sales tracking, account management, student information, and performance management. Through innovative system developments, Work Studyforce now offers school teams more efficient functionality and new features, which include AI technology by Salesforce Einstein, marketing support, and data enrichment. Work Studyforce is voluntarily used by 36 Cristo Rey campuses and has mobilized more than one million interactions between students, supervisors, and our schools! Student Formation Curriculum In collaboration with CWS teams, the national office is refining the skills training benchmarks and curriculum for students to match current and future workforce demand and desire. Together, with philanthropic support from Baird, KPMG, O’Shea Family Foundation, and Wintrust, the national office is collaborating closely with school teams to ensure that each Corporate Work Study program maintains sustainability while being flexible to meet the workforce needs of today and the future.

COLLEGE INITIATIVES As we continue to make progress towards our goals for student outcomes, the Cristo Rey Network is proud to share that our key accomplishment is the postsecondary success of our students. College Enrollment: Year over year, students who graduate from Cristo Rey schools enroll in college at rates (85%) exceeding the enrollment for their high-income peers (79%). College Completion: For our Class of 2016, 39% of Cristo Rey students completed a four-year degree and 6% completed a two-year degree. According to independent, third-party data: Cristo Rey graduates complete a bachelor’s degree by age 24 at more than twice the rate of the total U.S. low-income population (15%). While our aspirational goal is that 60% of Cristo Rey graduates complete four-year degrees, we are making strong progress towards their earning college degrees at national rates comparable to students from families in the highest income quartile.

GROWTH In August 2022, Cristo Rey Miami High School opened its doors, welcoming an eager freshman class for its first school year. As our 38th member school, Cristo Rey Miami High School is a testament to heroic and tireless leadership of the founding board and co-chairs, as well as the founding leadership team and partner14 | cristoreynetwork.org

ing organizations. Religiously sponsored by the Cristo Rey Institute (CRI), the community of leaders persisted through significant pandemic-related challenges and were unyielding in their demand that the opportunity of a Cristo Rey education be available to the under-served families of North Miami and Miami.

As we enter the 2023-2024 school year, Cristo Rey Orange County High School (CA) opened and enjoyed inaugural celebrations, including the First Day of School and Draft Day with Corporate Partners, students, and families.

In collaboration with committed leaders and generous investors, our Growth team is preparing for two future campuses: Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle High School (opening in 2024) and Cristo Rey Orlando High School (opening in 2025).

Going back now to work for the Cristo Rey Network feels like a bookend to what began long ago. I have always been passionate about educational equity and the right to quality education for all.” - Fr. Gartland, S.J.

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR CHAIR EMERITUS Dear Fellow Missioners: First, a loud word of welcome to Fr. Jim Gartland, S.J.. I’m delighted that the Jesuits have named him to help keep the Network on track. Jim and I worked together in Peru, so we are good friends and I know what “a catch” he is for the Network! I have thought and prayed a lot lately about what a gift from God our Cristo Rey mission is! Someone said that “the marginalized will teach you the gospel!” Since we have the luck to work exclusively with the marginalized, we have front-row seats to learn the gospel! I think the Cristo Rey mission is another sacrament, another way God works in our world. We are seeing how education is going from crisis to crisis and our Cristo Rey schools are flourishing. Since we began the first school in 1996, we have graduated more than 28,000 young men and women. Our King has led them to a future they may have never dreamed of! And the fruit of all our labors is our greater understanding of the gospel: the good news that our King is crazy about us!! Viva Cristo Rey!!

John P. Foley, S.J. 16 | cristoreynetwork.org

In March 2023, we announced the appointment of Jim Gartland, S.J. as our Chief Mission and Identity Officer, effective September 2023. As a founder of the Cristo Rey movement and President of Cristo Rey Jesuit for eight years, Fr. Gartland brings 30 years of local and national leadership to the role, which will strengthen and promote the Catholic identity of all Network schools. Fr. Gartland is the second individual to serve in the position, succeeding Fr. Foley, who retired in January 2022. To read our full announcement scan this QR code

FAITH FORMATION

Cristo Rey schools embody and advance the best traditions of Catholic education, animated by the collaboration of 35 Religious Sponsoring groups that our movement claims. Each sponsor assumes the responsibility that its local school is Catholic in identity and mission, true to the religious charism of the sponsor, and governed within a Catholic school context. Religious communities have the obligation of developing a school culture that is faithful to the ethical principles of the Catholic Church, the tenets of the Cristo Rey Spirituality document, and the Cristo Rey Network Mission Effectiveness Standards.

DID YOU KNOW? Established in March 2017 through a Pontifical Decree, the Cristo Rey Institute (CRI) is the first Public Juridic Person (PJP) in the U.S. authorized for secondary Catholic education. CRI’s purpose is to sponsor Catholic schools that are members of the Cristo Rey Network when a religious order or congregation is not available to sponsor a new Cristo Rey high school. As a PJP, the Cristo Rey Institute operates independently of the Cristo Rey Network and is recognized by the Catholic Church as able to certify that the Institute’s sponsored Cristo Rey schools are “Catholic” and in good standing.
