BOLD. INNOVATIVE. MISSION-DRIVEN.

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

“Get up, go into the city and there you will be told what to do.”

Acts of the Apostles 22:10

Friends of Cristo Rey,

Acts of the Apostles 22:10 embodies the spirit of our mission and fuels the work of our growing movement nationwide. This verse inspires us to continue our bold efforts in delivering a career-focused, college preparatory education in the Catholic tradition to students with limited economic resources.

As you read this Impact Report, you will see how our programs are helping to build the Kingdom of God in the here and now through some of our key accomplishments over the past year:

● Chief Mission Officer Fr. Jim Gartland, SJ rejoined the movement to strengthen our mission focus and deepen faith formation within our school communities, leadership teams, and boards.

● We opened Cristo Rey Orange County in fall 2023 as our 39th school and Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle in fall 2024 as the 40th. Cristo Rey Orlando is set to open in 2025.

● Our new Principals’ Fellowship Program is developing future academic leaders and helping to ensure a strong pipeline of skilled principals for our schools.

● We implemented a Corporate Work Study Modernization Project, which will expand and accelerate in 2024-2025 with the help of a third-party advisory firm and stakeholder input.

● 92% of the Class of 2024 is enrolled in college, with one in five graduates of that class attending one of our University Partners, where Cristo Rey graduates currently complete their bachelor’s degrees at an impressive rate of 68%.

● We successfully responded to the national FAFSA crisis, achieving a 92% FAFSA completion rate for the Class of 2024, compared to the 47% national average.

In early 2023, we kicked off an ambitious three-year strategic plan, backed by a matching gift challenge. We are excited to announce that through your support we have secured the full $5 million match to support our top priorities: Catholic education, attraction and retention of talent, academic excellence, Corporate Work Study, college success, and mission sustainability.

As a result, new programs are in place to attract and retain teachers, study the impact of our Corporate Work Study Program, expand college scholarships, and advance feasibility studies for new schools in two more cities.

As we move forward, we are committed to adapting, growing, and strengthening our model to ensure its continued power and impact for our students. On behalf of our 12,600 students, 30,000 graduates, and 40 school communities, we thank you for believing in and supporting this mission. Together, we will continue to build the Kingdom of God in the here and now.

¡Viva Cristo Rey!

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2023-2024

Yass Prize Award for Innovation

The Cristo Rey Network was named a top 10 finalist for the coveted Yass Prize at the third annual Yass Prize Celebration and Gala in Midtown Manhattan. Among 2,700 applicants, the national office received a $500,000 gift for Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding, and Permissionless (STOP) education. Known as the Pulitzer of Education Innovation, the Yass Prize seeks, rewards, and celebrates innovative organizations trying to break the cycle of ineffective education that is failing students across the country.

Mission Innovation

In our ever-evolving workforce and educational landscapes, the Cristo Rey Network is fostering learning and applying technological advancements to help us shape the future of our Catholic mission, founded by innovative thought and practice. Through the launch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Working Groups, we are rigorously examining the opportunities AI presents to empower our students and our school teams with the skills, knowledge, and adaptability needed to excel as leaders in our communities.

We took the opportunity to honor our Corporate Partners and the Cristo Rey Network Board of Directors bestowed The Spirit of Cristo Rey Award to John E. O’Shea in recognition of his outstanding contributions. As the twelfth recipient of our highest honor, John was recognized for his faith-based, steadfast, and influential activism aimed at providing transformational opportunities for our students. Joined by John’s family and all Annual Meeting attendees, Board Chair Jane E. Genster highlighted his instrumental partnership with our mission that exceeds 15 years:

He and his family have demonstrated their profound belief in our students and trust in the Cristo Rey movement… we welcome and look forward to John’s continued partnership in the audacious work of building the Kingdom of God here on Earth.”

Jane E. Genster

ENSURING COLLEGE READINESS

Cristo Rey student academic growth and achievement in the classroom is achieved through high-quality instruction and extraordinary school leadership demonstrated across our school communities. These essential elements to learning are fostered through sustained, year-round community building and professional development programs offered for Cristo Rey academic leaders and teachers.

Through lead, philanthropic investments from The Howley Foundation and the Hearst Foundations, the Leading and Learning Team collaborates with consulting expert facilitators to deliver job-embedded, new learning that builds the capacity and strengthens the retention of our faculty and staff. Initiatives include:

Putting MATH Education to Work

It has been invigorating to witness the ingenuity of our faculties unfold, in one room, as colleagues.”
Tony Harris, Principal, Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School

In partnership with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative, we are fostering students’ mathematical thinking and learning based on teachers’ high performance expectations, ongoing professional development, examination of student work, and improved math instruction.

Accelerating LITERACY Across the Classroom Schools are accelerating students’ achievement in English Language Arts (ELA) by implementing and scaling proven programmatic supports and instructional materials offered by the ThinkCERCA platform.

PREPARING OUR FUTURE WORKFORCE, TODAY

Our national office Corporate Work Study team develops and offers uniform resources, individualized support services, and forward thinking curriculum and benchmarks for our school teams, our Corporate Partners, and our students so that Cristo Rey’s distinctive Corporate Work Study model is best-in-class in our schools and communities across the country.

As we continue to garner notable recognition for our impact in youth workforce development, our donor community has been essential to our shared accomplishments and initiatives underway:

Launch of Corporate Work Study Modernization Project — a national response

In partnership with a strategic advisory firm, we have embarked on a two-year study to address the changes that we are seeing in CWS, intended to equip Cristo Rey Network leaders with ideas and information to collectively craft a SUSTAINABLE CWS model that is:

● consistent with our Cristo Rey mission, identity, and goals;

● flexible to local school and market needs;

● valuable to our Corporate Partners; and

● ultimately transformational for our students.

Our goal is to design a future-focused blueprint that aligns with our aspirational goals and addresses the realities of a shifting workforce landscape. Through focus groups, conversations and surveys amongst our school leadership, board members and stakeholders, including alumni and students, we are engaging many voices in this critical work. A newly crafted shared purpose for the CWS model will ensure that our program continues to be transformative for the future of workforce development in our country.

ACCOMPANYING TO AND THROUGH COLLEGE

We continue celebrating our 2,629 Class of 2024 graduates on their pathways to pursue a postsecondary degree. These young men and women committed to 550 colleges nationwide, including some of the nation’s most selective institutions: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Vanderbilt, University of Pennsylvania, University of Notre Dame, and many more. According to the stats...

● Seniors submitted a total of 36,838 applications and received nearly 20,000 acceptances.

● An impressive 92% of the total Class of 2024 committed to college, with enrollment deposits submitted.

● The average out-of-pocket cost for students committed to a four-year college is $2,603 per year, after federal student aid.

● 39 seniors across our Network were honored as QuestBridge and Posse scholars. These scholarship recipients received exceptional financial support and guidance to attend the colleges and universities where they were matched. The total of 39 scholars from 21 Cristo Rey schools is up from 25 scholars from 13 schools in 2023.

Impressively, one in five of our graduates committed to one of our University Partners, where Cristo Rey graduates complete bachelor’s degrees at an average rate of 68%! Statistically, their college completion projections are very strong, based on the college success of their fellow Cristo Rey alumni. Our graduates continue to enroll in college and complete four-year degrees at impressive rates.

Cristo
CRN University Partner College Enrollees

In the 2023-2024 school year, the national office College Initiatives team remained steadfastly focused on building and supporting pathways to college for students. The team provided best-inclass professional development and support for school teams to strengthen their capacity and deepen our shared college going culture locally and nationally.

Professional Development

The national office delivered professional development focused on building best practice among college counselors, alumni advisors, and school leaders, as well as addressing pressing issues facing high school students and college enrollees. This year, in light of challenges with the roll out of the new FAFSA Form through the Department of Education, the national office developed tools to assist college counselors in tracking developments related to the form and resources to support proactive communication with college and universities who were also impacted by the delays in FAFSA Form processing and subsequently, the release of financial aid packages.

Summit on College Success

Hosted by the University of Notre Dame, the 2023 Summit on College Success gathered college counselors, alumni advisors, school leaders, University Partners, and other stakeholders from across the country.

University Partners

As the national office builds and strengthens partnerships with our 80 University Partners, this year featured the addition and deepening of partnerships to build a robust portfolio of colleges and universities where Cristo Rey students will receive high levels of support. These partners reflect strong outcomes for students of color, commit to providing strong financial aid for Cristo Rey enrollees, and actively collaborate with the Network to build interest and enthusiasm for four year colleges amongst the Cristo Rey student population.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Reina Garcia, Director of College Counseling, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School ‘07 Georgetown University ‘11 Northwestern University ‘14

Across our Network, more than 150 Cristo Rey alumni are now working in a variety of positions at Cristo Rey schools. After completing her undergraduate studies at Georgetown, Reina earned her Master’s degree in Education and Social Policy at Northwestern while serving as a teacher for the Archdiocese of Chicago. She then moved into college access and success roles for the Noble Network of Charter Schools for six years before joining the team at her alma mater, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, our Network’s flagship school in Chicago.

Reina shared her story at our 2024 Summit on College Success:

“Growing up in Little Village, or La Villita, as it’s known to locals, I was immersed in a vibrant immigrant community on the southwest side of Chicago. La Villita is full of entrepreneurial spirit, with family-owned businesses. It’s a neighborhood where culture is alive! However, despite its vibrancy, La Villita has its challenges. Gang violence and limited opportunities make it a tough place to grow up.

My family story is rooted here. I’m the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the oldest of three sisters. As the eldest, I was the trailblazer for my parents. When it was time for high school, my parents sought out the best opportunities, which led me to graduate in 2007 from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Pilsen, Chicago, as part of the 10th graduating class. Since then, my two younger sisters and five cousins have also graduated from Cristo Rey Jesuit, and my cousin’s daughter started this fall. Cristo Rey has been transformative not only for me, but my family and community.

Fast-forward to college. After graduating from high school, I attended one of the Network’s University partner schools–Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. At the time, the partnership was still in its early stages, yet thriving, largely due to Dr. Daniel Porterfield, who was Georgetown’s Vice President for Strategic Development.

Georgetown is located in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country, and many of its students come from affluent backgrounds. Transitioning from La Villita to Georgetown was a culture shock for me. I struggled with imposter syndrome and homesickness. But thanks to Dr. Porterfield and opportunities like the Georgetown Scholarship Program and the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access, I felt welcomed, celebrated, and safe—a vital sentiment for a firstgeneration college student like myself and many Cristo Rey graduates.

My college experience changed my life, and returning to Cristo Rey was a no-brainer. I want to continue celebrating our students, families, and alumni while pushing us all to grow, learn, and excel.”

Working alongside Dr. Porterfield throughout my college career and witnessing his commitment to supporting Cristo Rey alums was incredible. He constantly reminded us how special Cristo Rey is. His unwavering belief in me helped me realize that Georgetown was just as lucky to have me on campus as I was to have the opportunity to be a Hoya.

One of the most memorable moments was when Dr. Porterfield invited my family to the President’s Dinner during graduation weekend. My dad’s initial reaction was not to attend. “What do I have in common with all those people?” he asked. I listed his accomplishments, like how he left his home in Mexico at 14 years old, navigating a new country and language to support his family, and having made countless sacrifices to create opportunities for me and my sisters. With many tears and hugs, my parents attended the dinner. And later that weekend, this girl from Little Village proudly walked across the stage to receive her degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the country. The Georgetown-Cristo Rey partnership was instrumental in my journey, and its impact on my family continues today.

Fast forward once more, and I’m now the Director of College Counseling at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, a role I’ve held since July 2020. My college experience changed my life, and returning to Cristo Rey was a nobrainer. I want to continue celebrating our students, families, and alumni while pushing us all to grow, learn, and excel.”

NATIONAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

This year, the Cristo Rey Network National Alumni Association has grown exponentially, proudly engaging over 7,800 registered alumni. Through collaboration with Alumni Partners, the Association continues to offer a variety of virtual workshops and webinars. These events provide exclusive access to career insights, professional development resources, and other valuable opportunities designed to support alumni in their career trajectories.

To celebrate our continuous growth and the incredible achievements of our alumni, we launched our inaugural 40 Under 40 publication. This special recognition spotlights 40 standout alumni under the age of 40 who are leaders in their careers and communities. Their stories reflect the values of leadership, innovation, and service, highlighting the profound impact of Cristo Rey graduates across diverse industries.

Attending Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School was the best decision my parents made for me. My life would not be on the same trajectory if I did not attend CRPHS. I have had once-in-alifetime opportunities that helped me experience career exploration, caddying on a golf course, receiving a full-ride to college, and multiple internships at Deloitte during my time at CRPHS which led to my current career at Deloitte.” Alzberta Nei, Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School ‘18, Risk and Financial Advisory Consultant, Deloitte

EXPANDING IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA AND SEATTLE, WA

In August 2023, we were thrilled to welcome Cristo Rey Orange County High School as the 39th school in the Cristo Rey Network. Religiously sponsored by the Cristo Rey Institute, Cristo Rey Orange County’s inaugural school year established new traditions within the community and accomplished many early milestones of success.

In May 2024, Cristo Rey Orange County celebrated its inaugural ¡VIVA! gala, honoring Tim and Alanna Psomas, whose founding leadership made the dream of Cristo Rey Orange County High School possible. More than 350 prominent philanthropists, corporate partners, and community leaders raised $2+ million for the school to support student growth as enrollment more than doubled in the 2024-2025 school year.

Before the school year ended, a standing-room-only crowd of families, donors, and Corporate Work Study Partners crammed into the campus Parish Hall for Cristo Rey’s first awards ceremony.

First Year Student Achievements:

• Academics: 77% of students earned a 3.0+ GPA, with very significant growth in reading and math achievement

• Corporate Work Study: 93% of students met or exceeded expectations at work

• CROC Student of the Year: As a freshman, Amalia played three sports, served as a student ambassador, contributed as a leader and peer, and earned a 4.0 GPA.

We have high expectations and provide high levels of support to empower students to succeed. There is ample evidence that our students are on the right path.”

A BEACON OF CATHOLIC TRADITION

Animated by the collaboration of 35 Religious Sponsoring groups, Cristo Rey schools embody and advance the best traditions of Catholic education. Each sponsor assumes the responsibility that its local school is Catholic in identity and mission, true to the religious charism of the sponsor, and governed within a Catholic school context. Religious communities have the obligation of developing a school culture that is faithful to the ethical principles of the Catholic Church, the tenets of the Cristo Rey Spirituality document, and the Cristo Rey Network Mission Effectiveness Standards, while still embracing students of other faith traditions.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF MISSION OFFICER, FR. JIM GARTLAND, SJ

While we were waiting outside to process into the church for the Mass of the Holy Spirit, one of the new students at St. Martin de Porres High School, our Cristo Rey member school in Cleveland, asked if I was the pope. I laughed and said no. It occurred to me that for these first-year students, this was probably their first time attending a Mass. The excitement was palpable. We gathered to pray, asking the Holy Spirit to fill all of us and lead us during this academic year.

I reflected with all gathered that we come from different backgrounds, different religions, and different families, yet we acknowledge that we are united by one Spirit, united by one God, and we all understand God’s language: the language of love. That is why we believe in academic excellence and rigor, because our students deserve the best. We provide an experience of work for our students because dignified work is a right for all. Our schools are safe havens because peace and justice flow from God’s language of love. We form communities of faith and love, we have one another’s back, because we want to love one another as Christ loves us.

As the Cristo Rey Credo says, “Our mission is to make the Kingdom of God concrete in the here and now. The plan our King always said he would set in motion is indeed moving forward in the Cristo Rey Network. The kingdom is coming, and we are an essential part of that dream.”

As many of you know, I led the Feasibility Study for the first Cristo Rey school. I am so excited that our school year has begun with the Mass of the Holy Spirit in all of our 40 schools. All this seems miraculous to me and a clear sign of God’s presence and love. We are so grateful for all of you being a part of God’s dream here in the Cristo Rey Network. May we continue to be filled with God’s Spirit and continue to proclaim God’s language of love in what we say and what we do. Long live Christ our King, and thank you for your love and support.

Mass of the Holy Spirit at Saint Martin de Porres

2023-2024 SCHOOL GRANTS

Thanks to the generous Cristo Rey Network donor community, the national office offered intentional, high impact grants and direct service programs to advance progress and outcomes of our school communities locally and nationally. Designed in partnership with donors and informed by school-identified priorities, the national office dispersed $1.15 million to schools in 2023-2024.

The following initiatives were launched to elevate the performance and outcomes of schools and students over the last year:

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Accelerating Literacy Across the Curriculum

Generously funded by The Howley Foundation

Direct service grant awarded to 3 schools to establish Cohort C

In partnership with ThinkCERCA, Accelerating Literacy Across the Curriculum continues to provide professional development and coaching to teachers at schools in reading and writing. Building on the progress of seven schools in cohorts A and B, participating schools will access a wealth of resources - including texts, lessons, and assessments - that will advance students’ reading, writing, and analytical skills.

Putting MATH Education to Work

Generously funded by The Howley Foundation

Direct service grant awarded to 3 schools to establish Cohort VI

Joining school math teachers from Cohorts I, II, III, IV, and V, and in partnership with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative, Cohort VI of Putting MATH Education to Work is increasing math achievement for all students by improving teacher practice, promoting high levels of student engagement in mathematical thinking, and providing schools with high quality resources that positively impact classroom instruction.

What seems characteristic to Cristo Rey math instruction is the push for results as a network rather than as just a class or school. This creates a feeling of a movement which I am proud to become part of.”

DOMINIQUE JORDAN

Verbum Dei Jesuit High School ‘09 VP & Wealth Advisor, The Jordan Group at J.P.Morgan Wealth Management Los Angeles, CA

Dominique was recently appointed to the Cristo Rey Network Board of Directors as a Graduate Director. As a proud alumnus, his story not only has come full circle, but continues to unfold. In addition to the national Board, he holds a local Board position at Verbum Dei Jesuit, where he now offers strategic financial guidance.

“I credit my Corporate Work Study experience as one of the main reasons that I’m in the finance field. My industry is built on maintaining and supporting relationships. Learning to navigate prospective clients in the finance industry at my CWS placement was the best learning lesson I’ve had.”

In his local and national leadership roles, Dominique brings a dynamic 10-year career, with a focused mission to guide individuals and families through the challenges of creating, protecting, and distributing wealth during shifts in the global economy.

In 2023, he started the Jordan Group at J.P.Morgan Wealth Management after spending two years at First Republic, where he was a Vice President and Wealth Advisor. Previously, he was an Associate Vice President, Regional Training Officer and Advisor at Morgan Stanley, as well as an Analyst at Merrill Lynch.

Dominique grew up with a deep appreciation for people’s hard work and determination to improve their lives. During his formative years at Verbum Dei Jesuit High School, he was introduced to wealth management opportunities through his CWS placement at Merrill Lynch.

Dominique graduated from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business with a B.S. in Finance and Management, and a concentration in New and Small Business.

My former CWS supervisor at Merrill Lynch, Brad Dykes, sent me the position application at Morgan Stanley. Those relationships at Merrill Lynch, where I worked in high school, were influential in my role at Morgan Stanley and where I am today.”

Active in his local community for many years, he founded the DJ|JD Foundation, a for-purpose organization that aims to uplift and mold high school students to develop an understanding of financial markets and goal setting. In addition, Dominique serves as an active member of Georgetown University’s Alumni Club of Los Angeles, Gates Millennium Scholars.

I bring Verbum Dei with me wherever I go. My Cristo Rey experience was life-changing. Overall, I learned a lot about myself. That is the most important thing I could take away from the experience, besides a diploma. The school teaches you qualities and principles that are essential to carry into the real world.”
