Local woman serves u wild wonders on TV Local woman Angela Long, 31 from Gilberdyke, has recently taken part in BBC cooking show, MasterChef

Angela’s love for foraging and the wild is a huge theme in her cooking and Our Goole caught up with Angela to find out more about herself and her experience on the show. How long have you been cooking for? I’ve been cooking since I was a child, but really got more passionate when I had children of my own. I wanted to make sure they had the best start to life and had a varied diet. As a family we have various insects as pets, giant millipedes, whip scorpions, rainbow stag beetles etc. The study of insects (entomology) was a passion of mine that spread to my children. When I was out on bug hunts with them it helped to know what the surrounding plant life was because that often indicated what we’d find. I recall taking my children out and spotting some mushrooms, so I knew that environment was soil rich and damp = lots of potential beetles, millipedes, snails etc. I knew the trees nearby were birch trees so I researched the mushrooms. Page 6

They were birch boletes and edible. So, I took some home and tentatively cooked them for me alone (not my children). As time went on, my knowledge and confidence in foraging grew and I involved my children in cooking and gathering only what I was sure was safe for them. Who is you biggest inspiration? David Attenborough. He’s not a chef, I’m aware, but I respect his love of nature and respect for wildlife Heston Blumenthal. He combines science with food, and he isn’t afraid to be different, I love that message for my children. Be you. Regardless of how wacky that may be. Why did you apply for the show? I applied for the show for two reasons. Firstly, because it had been a dream of mine to experience something I’m passionate about. Most importantly, it was to inspire my daughters. Ella and Daisy were both struggling to settle back into school post-Covid and I really wanted to show them they could achieve anything they put their mind to... even midpandemic.

Issue 074-June 2022

Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers

How was your experience on the show? The experience was intense but amazing. The behind-the-scenes staff are so welcoming and put you at ease during this alien scenario. I lived for every second of it and tried to push through the nerves to the best of my ability to perform and make my peers proud. What was the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge was the timings and travelling, I don’t cook like that naturally, so it was a constant, consistent effort to get done in time. And travelling back and forth from the studio to my village meant practice time was tight alongside my work/mum duties. It was a challenge, but one I’d repeat again every time.

You go to sleep thinking of recipes and making mental tweaks. It’s a whole new ball game. What is your favourite dish? My favourite dish changes daily. The theme in our house I guess is something homely with a twist. What plans do you have for the future? Me and my partner Damian Grimley (a bushcraft expert and rope access tech) are in the process of setting up some exciting activities surrounding cooking in the wild. Check out my TikTok, Instagram, fb @ Wild food by Angela for progress updates on this soon. If you would like to watch Angela in action, visit BBC iPlayer to catch up on MasterChef.

Courier Fraud a This month, Goole’s policing team talks to our readers about courier fraud and how it occurs when people hand over money or valuables to criminals posing as couriers

‘National figures show that, last year alone, more than 3,500 people were victims of courier fraud, with losses totalling more than £15.2million.’

awareness week Using a variety of different tactics, criminals will call the victim and convince them into withdrawing a sum of money and handing it over to a ‘courier’ who is sent to their home. The victim may also be convinced into handing over their bank cards, PINs, as well as high-value items such as jewellery, watches and gold. National figures show that, last year alone, more than 3,500 people were victims of courier fraud, with losses totalling more than £15.2million. Whilst reports of courier fraud in Humberside are amongst the lowest in the country (eight reports, losses of £2,000 in 2021), they do happen – and have occurred recently. During this incident, a person was phoned by someone who claimed that their bank details were compromised and must immediately contact Scotland Yard. The victim hung up, but the caller was able to remain on the line. The victim called 999 and spoke to someone (the caller again) who directed them to withdraw a significant sum from their bank. They were informed that a courier would arrive to pick it up. Thankfully, in this situation, we managed to stop the scam.

Other methods used by courier fraudsters • Bank card expiry: Fraudsters claim to be from the victim’s bank and say their card is no longer valid. They ask for the PIN and then send a “courier” to collect the card before using it for fraudulent purposes. • Purchasing high-end items: The suspects pretend to be police officers and ask the victim to help with an undercover operation by purchasing expensive items like watches, jewellery and gold. • Counterfeit cash/bank investigation: The victim is told to withdraw a large amount of money from a person claiming to be a police officer and the cash is picked up later by a courier to “check for fingerprints” or to “identify counterfeit bank notes”. • Computer takeover: The fraudster telephones the victim, purporting to be from their internet service provider, saying that they have had an issue with their internet connectivity and are due compensation. • Detective Inspector Ben Robinson of our Economic Crime Unit said: “People targeted by courier fraudsters can be from any demographic, but typically prey on some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Victims typically tend to be aged between 70 and 89”.

Meet the man behind y You may have seen him around Goole or he may even deliver milk straight to your front door, but if you haven’t, meet Anthony Raspin, Goole’s very popular milkman! Also a local councillor, Anthony Raspin is hugely popular in and around Goole and covers a variety of areas from Goole, Howden, Hook, Market Weighton, Thorne and many other areas. Shopping local is essential to ensure all our local businesses can continue to thrive. The benefits of getting your milk from Anthony not only include supporting a local business but is also better for the environment as the milk comes in a glass bottle. Our Goole had a little chat with Anthony to find out more about him. How did you become a milk man? ‘There was a dairy farm right outside a Page 16

nightclub and 30 years ago when I came out of the nightclub, I said to my friends ‘I want to be a milkman! ‘Fast forward 30 years and I still am! A job came up and I originally thought I would only do a few hours but then I ended up taking on my own round. Back then it was all franchise owned. I liked the idea of being my own boss and I was an early riser so it fit into my lifestyle.’ What do you find most rewarding? ‘I never had an issue getting up early so then having the rest of the day to yourself is a huge benefit. I love being self-employed. I love helping others, especially the elderly customers who I would also do the shopping

your milk! for. I still have some of the same customers I had back when I first started. I am an outdoor person so again it fits in well with my life. It also gives you a level of fitness, which enabled me to run marathons and get huge support from my customers.’ What do you find most challenging? ‘Keeping your customers can be hard. There is a lot of competition from supermarkets, but I have the customer service offering. I also keep a look out around the neighbourhood, keeping a check on customers’ houses when they are on holiday. Therefore, it is down to me to keep my customers happy to ensure I have plenty and they want to continue using me.’ Facebook Anthony Raspin if you would like more information about getting your milk delivered! Top tips for encouraging wildlife into your garden We all know how important it is to look after the beautiful and diverse wildlife around us.

trees and shrubs provide both food and shelter for critters and nesting sites for garden animals and birds.

From birds roosting in the trees to the countless number of insects in the ground and on plants, there is so much life around us that we may not even realise.

Flowers meanwhile provide pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies, which is a crucial component of their fertilisation.

Whether you have moved into a new home or are looking to enhance the wildlife activity in your current garden, there is plenty each of us can do to encourage the creatures to visit our plots. Making sure your garden or green space has a mixed range of different trees, shrubs and flowers is a big plus which will help wildlife. The

No matter what time of the year it is, birds need to eat. Birds are very easy to attract to your garden, simply by making sure there is food available for them to enjoy. Whether adding a bird table or box, put out mixtures of foods including fat balls, peanuts and sunflower hearts, which is a true feast for our feathered friends.

This month, Goole Jobcentre, in collaboration with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Andrew Percy’s office, will be holding a job fair on Friday 24th June 2022 at the Market Hall, Goole.

Goole Job Fair 2022 Why visit a job fair? The world of job hunting can be hard, especially if you’re unsure which route to take or you’ve not had much luck securing interviews. So, what next? Signing up for a careers fair is a great way of meeting employers face to face and could open up many more opportunities compared to online applications. The event will be open to the public from 10am to 2pm and will host a variety of employers plus training and voluntary organisations who will be promoting their jobs and opportunities and offering advice and support. When you attend a careers’ fair you meet the people who matter. Sometimes it can be hard to get answers to the most important questions online but the fair gives you an opportunity to be proactive and talk to a range of employers. It’s easy to skip Page 26

over an online job listing when you aren’t given all of the details which could mean missing out on the perfect role - that’s where fairs have an advantage. As a candidate, there’s nothing worse than waiting weeks to hear back from employers. However, at careers’ fairs, employers are on the lookout for the newest talent and eager to start recruiting. Not only can you leave the event with an interview date in the diary but you could be starting the role much quicker too! Why exhibit at a job fair? • You can benefit from face-toface recruitment and engage in the art of conversation. First impressions count. Speak directly with jobseekers. See beyond the CV. • Cost effective recruitment - Create a faster and more effective impression of a CV by speaking to jobseekers directly at the event.

• Speak face-to-face to hundreds of jobseekers - Fast, efficient, effective, and direct recruitment of staff. • Engage in ‘mini interviews’ on the day - find a star candidate you can’t let leave the event, take them behind your stand to conduct a ‘mini interview’ instantly. • Great networking opportunities with exhibitors within the event - network with exhibitors within the event from different industries or the same. • Create brand awareness to hundreds of local jobseekers - Just opened a new office? Expose your brand to the local jobseeker community. For any employers who haven’t already expressed an interest in attending this event and would like more information, please contact Diane at Goole Jobcentre on 01405 664115.

Rambling for all Goole & District Rambling Club takes place usually on the first Sunday of the month where they enjoy a full day out

Goole & District Rambling Club sets off around 7.30am-8am and returns anytime from 5pm-7.30pm, including stopping for breakfast and a lunch stop. The next ramble will be on Sunday 3rd July to Ilkley Moor. The club’s founding member, Jack Harman, told us that the club officially came into existence in

1965 when it became affiliated to The Ramblers Association. Prior to this it appears to have been an informal group when Goole YMCA and Goole Wheelers organised an outing to Malham in 1957. The next year they went to Ingleton and then it evolved into a monthly ramble and they continue with this model today. For more details email Goole.ramblers@gmail.com
