DEAD PUPPET SOCIETY’S ISHMAEL

Dead Puppet Society’s Ishmael is a groundbreaking theatrical production taking the world by storm.

The reimagining of Herman Melville’s timeless novel, Moby Dick, combines live action, live filmmaking, and boundary-pushing visual theatre to create a unique and captivating experience.

The production is the creative vision of the internationally acclaimed Dead Puppet Society, which has garnered critical acclaim for its innovative and imaginative approach to puppetry and storytelling. Ishmael wowed audiences and critics alike during its world premiere season at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and is now embarking on a regional tour.

The play centres on Ishmael, a young climate refugee who is given the chance to start over in the outer solar system on board the MV Pequod, under the command of the obnoxious Captain Ahab. Exploring the human motivations of greed and wealth when confronted with an environment that can no longer support them on a future earth with depleted resources.

Ishmael is a unique and visually compelling theatre experience hailed by critics as a new

kind of storytelling. Writer and Director David Morton has crafted a production that plays out like a film on stage, weaving in miniature sets, puppetry, and a trio of live performers to create an immersive and unforgettable experience. Adding a new layer of emotion and depth to the production is the original score by indie pop musician Bec Sandridge. Sandridge’s haunting melodies and poignant lyrics reflect the themes of redemption, determination, and the triumph of the human spirit that are central to the play. Her unique style blends electronic and acoustic elements, creating a soundscape that is both otherworldly and deeply emotional.

Dead Puppet Society’s Ishmael is a must-see production that is sure to captivate and inspire audiences.

Catch it at Cairns Performing Arts Centre on Friday July 7, and experience the magic for yourself.

If you’re looking for a peaceful and historically significant outdoor space to enjoy in Cairns, look no further than Munro Martin Parklands. Located just north of the city centre, this quiet sanctuary has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s.

MUNRO MARTIN PARKLANDS

Originally named after Sir William Norman, the former mayor of Cairns, the park fell into disuse for several decades before being redeveloped and renamed with a bequest from local philanthropists, the Munro Martin sisters. The park quickly regained its status as a place for community gatherings and organised events, and became an important rallying point for parades and celebrations during World War II.

Despite its early success, by 2014, no major work had been undertaken in the park for some time, and it again became underutilised. However, in 2016, all that changed when the park underwent a major redevelopment, transforming it into one of Cairns’ most popular outdoor entertainment venues.

Now, visitors to Munro Martin Parklands can enjoy a state-of-the-art amphitheatre,

a grand stage, and a lush green space perfect for picnics, relaxation, and outdoor events. It has quickly become a hub for cultural and artistic events, hosting a wide range of performances as well as community and cultural events.

One of the park’s greatest features is its serene atmosphere. Visitors can take a stroll through the winding pathways or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. It’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our shared history.

But the parklands aren’t just for enjoying nature and history; they’re also available for hire. With its lush greenery and stunning amphitheatre, Munro Martin Parklands is the perfect location for your events.

Overall, Munro Martin Parklands is a hidden gem in Cairns, with a rich history and a bright future as a hub for entertainment and community events. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a relaxing day out or host a special event, this tranquil space will not disappoint.

BEHIND THE ARTS

Shining a spotlight on the Creative Life team who are responsible for the delivery of the the thriving arts and culture program for Cairns Regional Council.

In this issue, we talk to Arts & Cultural Education Officer, Christopher Kohn.

Tell us in 25 words, what is your key role and main responsibilities?

I work with a small, passionate team to help Council achieve its goals for young creatives, disability arts, and First Nations arts and culture.

How did you end up here? Talk us through your career pathway & progression.

For most of the past 25 years, I have been a Theatre Director in Melbourne and Brisbane, both as a freelancer and an Artistic Director. In 2017, I took up the role teaching directing at Victorian College of the Arts, which is where I studied directing in the late 1990s.

When COVID hit, I moved with my family to Brisbane, and eventually to Cairns, to be closer to the Indigenous communities in Cape York I had started working with. When the opportunity came to step into a role at Cairns Regional Council, I jumped at the chance. I have always had a special interest in arts with and for young people, people from different cultural backgrounds, and artists with disability, so my position at Council allows me to apply this knowledge and foster the amazing talent in this region.

What’s the most inspiring moment on the job so far?

Most recently, it was helping out at the Local & Vocal concert at Tanks Arts Centre. Part of our Flame.Arts program, the annual event profiled seven musical acts from around the region – all young and emerging. Such incredible talent –with a huge range of genres and artists from many different backgrounds. I took my 14 year old and his friend and it blew their minds!

Why do we need to engage young people in the arts?

Young people will consume and make art wherever and whenever they can. By fostering these young artists through programs like Flame.Arts, we’re providing a way for them to collaborate with other

artists, find mentors and new audiences, and fine-tune their skills through workshops and resources they may not find elsewhere.

No matter what stage of their arts path these young people are on, or what their overall goal is – to perform, to gain backstage experience, or just be a part of something extraordinary – creating a space to explore new possibilities and exposure to artistic practice allows everyone to come together to dream bigger and brighter futures for arts and culture.

What advice would you offer anyone wanting to break into this area?

Go out and see as much work as you can – live music, movies, theatre, dance, exhibitions. Find your community of like-minded creatives and start making stuff with whatever you have at hand. Do what you love and you will find your community. And, of course contact us at FlameProjects@cairns.qld.gov. au and follow us on facebook.com/ CairnsCreativeLife. We need you and your ideas and hopefully can help you to achieve your goals.

FROM FLAME TO FIRE GRETA STANLEY

Greta Stanley, alumni of the Flame.Arts project, on getting her songs from the notebook to the stage.

With millions of streams to her name, three albums and another in progress, festival appearances, and a list of support slots that reads like a who’s who of Australian indie pop (Amy Shark, Tash Sultana, Thelma Plum), the trajectory of Cairns performer Greta Stanley is nothing short of impressive.

The girl from Mena Creek is proud of her regional background, as is evident in her songwriting, many of her lyrics reflecting the natural beauty of the Far North. But what Greta is also very proud of is the pathway taken from a dreamer recording songs in her bedroom to a bonafide recording artist, thanks to a little nurturing from the Flame.Arts program, facilitated by Cairns Regional Council’s Creative Life team.

Flame.Arts is best described as an incubator for emerging talent, its intent being to create a pathway for artists to explore new possibilities and exposure to artistic practice, to hone skills through workshops, and ultimately create a tipping point for the next step on the arts path.

“Shows like Australian Idol are really valuable to gain a popular presence, but they’re more for the entertainment industry as a whole, rather than specifically the music industry,” says Greta. “While they absolutely have their place, for songwriters like me, they’re not quite the right fit.

“I studied music at school but I didn’t really have any direction. I was about 16 when I played my first gig in Innisfail, and just knew I wanted to take music a little more seriously. I enrolled in a TAFE course, just until I figured out what I wanted to do.

“A friend from TAFE told me about a competition being run by Flame.Arts, the grand prize being a trip to Brisbane for QMusic’s BIGSOUND music conference, entry to the BIGSOUND Showcase performance, and a professional recording session for three original songs. The deadline was, of course, the next day so I scrambled to put together some Soundcloud demos and submitted. About a week later, I heard back from (then Flame.Arts facilitator) Fleur McMenamin telling me I’d been successful.

“BIGSOUND was incredible. Being immersed into this environment to listen to speakers and see incredible bands perform was priceless. Recording started the next day, and I was to record three songs with producer Mark Myers. We started with the three, and just continued. Mark was able to take the sound from my head and transpose it into an aural experience. He made it evident that this was actually something I could do as a career, not just a bedroom hobby.

“Having that opportunity through Flame.Arts was quite literally life changing. Not only through the production, but also the introduction to industry players that are still relevant and important in my career today. In fact, Fleur became my manager and mentor, and Mark Myers has been my producer on all albums.

“As a young emerging musician, this program was so influential, and the opportunities it provided me was incredible. Not only in terms of performance, but also all the other elements of being a professional working musician were considered - building a website, creating a social presence, learning how to market yourself, apply for grants. Of course, I’m sure I still would have produced music at some stage in some way, but the experiences provided by Flame.Arts and the connections made have been invaluable.”

If you’re looking to flex your performance skills on the big stage, look no further than Launch Pad at Cairns Performing Arts Centre. This event is where emerging artists take the stage to show off their skills.

The last Launch Pad event was a showstopper! Performers from Cairns and surrounding regions brought their A-game, and the audience was buzzing. The word on the street is that Launch Pad is the place to be for anyone looking to get on stage.

The talented and dreamy Ash Binello got the party started by hypnotising the crowd with her original song Goblin Hollow. Bundles of Doves, a quirky duo, performed next, rocking their zany harmonies and early 1900s Edwardian clothing.

After local guitarist PJ Myers wowed the crowd with his cool percussive guitar tricks, The Midnight Helix raised the bar with their gritty drum and

LOCAL & VOCAL

Local & Vocal 2023 was a rocking success with twelve of the very best of Cairns and surrounding regions’ young emerging music acts, and a 200+ crowd in attendance – the rain wasn’t going to dampen the show with all music acts stepping up to the challenge and giving it their all!

DJ Miss V kicked off the evening with some funky anthems welcoming audiences on arrival and introducing the first acts of the evening on an intimate Garden Stage. Folk music act Ash Binello, roots/indie guitarist Summah Ford, and singer songwriter Kate Hunter with her original country/ folk style acoustic set were all equally entertaining and worthy of our continued support.

With Garden Stage wrapping up, audiences settled into Tank 5 for the mainstage show promising some big punch. All-female neo-soul act Black Angles were first up with their funky bass and jazzy percussive drums, followed by indie singer songwriter Tenni with her enigmatic stage presence, edgy guitar, and superb lyrical ability. Emerging pop outfit Strange Fantasy wooed the audience with their dreamy vocals, cool drum’n’bass and some kooky on stage antics complementing their style.

Duelling guitar duo Chris & Kaleb sang an original track reminiscent of Bruno Mars with a country twist, and party starters Dr Albert & the Malarias

proved that rhythm is the beating heart of NQ with epic guitar riffs, funky bass, glittery flares and Maximus on drums. Taulsala Rea was a dynamo on stage raising the profile of First Nations excellence with lyrical and vocal maturity for miles, setting the bar high for solo singer songwriters.

Superboy kicked off a dance break, amping up the crowd with a high energy African hip hop performance accompanied by dancers on stage, followed by STREET ELEMENTS breakdancers wowing the audience with their high-powered routines and back-breaking spins. Headline act Hidden Pillars, an exciting five-piece rock band with infused blues tones, blew the roof off the Tanks – massive onstage, technically on point and vocals to match.

With many thanks to Patty Preece and CQU students who were on site filming the live performances, and to Cairns FM who were there to capture the fun and interview the artists. All artists receive a copy of their live performance to continue to develop their profile and reach for more opportunities.

LocaL & Vocal is a Flame.Arts event and professional development opportunity for young and emerging creatives it is an initiative of Cairns Regional Council’s Young Creatives Strategy - funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

Local Playwright Tackles the Big Issues

Cairns playwright Dennis McIntosh is accustomed to tackling big themes around life and work. He has published two autobiographies about his time as an underground construction worker and sheep shearer, highlighting the impact of hard physical labour on bodies and minds. Born in Townsville, Dennis grew up in Western Melbourne, beneath the shadow of the West Gate Bridge.

Given this background, it is not surprising that Dennis has chosen as his next project a theatrical account of Australia’s worst-ever industrial accident, the West Gate Bridge collapse that killed 35 workers in 1970. Dennis’s new play, Who Took the Fall, explores this tragedy in a way that has never been done before.

Who Took the Fall had a week of script development in early 2023, with a script reading performed at Bulmba-ja by five Cairns-based professional actors, for an appreciative audience of 60. The rehearsal room also had a survivor of the disaster present as a script consultant, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the performance.

The reading was a resounding success, and plans are already in motion for a full production in 2024. With the support of the RADF Major Round fund, Dennis has received $9,050 to help bring this important production to the stage.

Pressing Topics in the Tropics

In late 2022 and early 2023, NorthSite Contemporary Arts at Bulmba-ja was buzzing with excitement as experimental arts took centre stage. The dynamic duo of Cairns multidisciplinary artists, Melania Jack and Patty Preece, collaborated with a team of creatives to present their latest installation - Pressing Topics - as their performance art identity - The Ironing Maidens. The opening night saw a diverse crowd of contemporary art and music enthusiasts flock to witness the awe-inspiring fusion of electro-pop with domestic iconography of irons and ironing boards. The month-long exhibition employed the talents of eight artists, including the renowned projection artist, Yandell Walton, who acted as the project mentor for the show.

Pressing Topics’ success didn’t stop there. The unique installation was subsequently invited to Outer Space Gallery in Brisbane, providing an opportunity for Melania’s work to reach new audiences. It’s clear that the RADF Major Round fund’s support of $10,000 was pivotal in enabling this artistic masterpiece to come to fruition.

ARTISTS AT WORK

ANDREA HUELIN

From Men In Cones, an artist-in-residence exhibition featuring the human landscape of traffic cones and high vis of Council workers, to the beauty of Sea Walls ocean street art around Cairns, and now onto winning one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards, Cairns artist Andrea Huelin is a painter who pauses to observe the ordinary.

However it’s her observation of an extraordinary character that has landed Huelin the 2023 Archibald Prize’s Packing Room Prize, a subcategory of the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture.

Clown Jewels, Huelin’s portrait of Cal Wilson, an Aotearoa New Zealand–born, Melbourne-based stand-up comedian best known for her appearances on Spicks and Specks and Have You Been Paying Attention, is the first entry into the Archibald Prize for the Cairns-based artist. Originally a journalist and broadcaster, Huelin followed her love of art and embarked on a career change into arts administration and marketing in Queensland before deciding to take up the paintbrush herself.

“Cal has an Instagram page where she revealed the brilliant headpieces that she made from plastic toys and shiny ornaments during the long Melbourne lockdowns [in 2020–21

due to COVID-19]. Posing in them on her makeshift home stage, she looked so proud of herself that it made me laugh out loud. I posted a congratulatory comment. Cal wrote back and admired my paintings, so I asked if she’d sit for a portrait,” says Huelin.

Now in its 32nd year, the Packing Room Prize is the larrikin child of the main Archibald Prize, and is judged by the Art Gallery of NSW staff who receive, unpack and hang the entries. Timothy Dale, Monica Rudhar and Alexis Wildman are the three professional art handlers with 19 years of hands-on Archibald Prize experience between them. Together they selected Huelin’s winning artwork for the prestigious Packing Room Prize 2023.

“Cal brought her creativity and imagination to the sitting, as well as a suitcase full of headpieces and outfits”, says Huelin. “I wanted to paint a formal portrait, mocking the 19th-century style in which women were painted in their fancy bonnets and frilly blouses, looking either bored and oblivious, or proud as punch of their best duds. As often happens, the painting acquired a life of its own. With Cal’s slightly haughty expression and sparkly headpiece, it suddenly became seriously regal.”

KATIE NOONAN

Katie Noonan lends her voice to celebrate the 50th anniversary release of Joni Mitchell’s legendary album Blue

Queensland’s own Katie Noonan is one of the finest singer-songwriters of her generation. So, it’s fitting that she should lend her voice to the extraordinary work of another generationdefining music maker.

Joni Mitchell’s iconic album Blue is a record so surreal and visceral it simply surpasses time. Written about the time of her breakup from Graham Nash, it’s a cluster of songs that are an outpouring of emotion, her descriptions of how a heart breaks have resonated thousands of times over. As Mitchell so perfectly put it: “It’s the purest emotional record that I will ever make in my life… there’s hardly a dishonest note in the vocals.”

Katie Noonan is no stranger to pouring pure emotion into her music, earning her a welldeserved reputation as one of Australia’s most vibrant and breath-halting performers. With seven platinum records, 27 ARIA Award nominations and five ARIA Award wins, she has cemented her place in music-lovers’ hearts since her early days as the frontwoman of Brisbane rock band, george. Over the years, Katie has proven herself a musical rarity, her incredible talent and ability to flourish in any genre – whether that’s gentle folk, gutsy rock, or a grandiose operatic performance backed by a symphony orchestra.

For this very special tour, Katie Noonan is accompanied by guitar virtuoso Ben Hauptmann, as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Blue by bringing her distinctive musicality to timeless Joni Mitchell classics like A Case of You and, of course, River

“Blue is an album that unequivocally changed my life,” Katie says. “From a compositional, lyrical and vocal performance point of view it has inspired me deeply. I love that the album was gifted to me from another female artist, and it is an album I regularly recommend to up-and-coming female artists also. Joni’s artistry and music genius is unparalleled, and I absolutely love singing her songs.”

TOTAL UNITS: REGURGITATOR & CUSTARD

When Regurgitator recorded their seminal album UNIT in a dingy Brisbane warehouse in 1997, they were trying to create a sound that steered them away from the machismo that influenced the punk-adjacent music scene at the time.

“It was this divey rehearsal space that we used to go to practice, then we found out the guy that ran the space was getting kicked out because they were developing it,” bassist Ben Ely recalls. “So he got kicked out, and it was Martin (Lee) our drummer and our sound guy (Magoo) who said, ‘why don’t we just rent it off him for super cheap and do whatever we want?’ so we set up a little recording studio… It was pretty povo.”

Because the band’s outlay on the recording space was so minimal, it made the whole process less stressful, which Ely says contributed to UNIT’s ultimate success.

Twenty-five years later, Regurgitator is still having fun with it. The band just announced a massive national tour presented by Double J with special guests Custard, who will head to Cairns with them in June.

“I admit we have pretty much missed the boat on creating a comeback record” quips Custard lead singer Dave McCormack, “but we hope there are enough old bastards out there who will be willing to spend their hard earned cash to see us play a bunch of songs that are about 30 years old”.

Back in the ol’ days, Custard’s appeal was an awkward innocence that often fumbled alongside a playful sense of anarchy. They were a band full of the exuberance and abandon that marks one’s late teens and early 20s. These days, as McCormack laments, they’re the ‘parents our parents warned us about’. Thankfully, Custard haven’t lost their sense of humour or irony, even writing a song with the same name.

To quote a very Custard-ian quote, “We’re so old we can spell scientist correctly, and know all your local postcodes.”

What’s not to love? Four guys in their mid-40s, casually knocking out a bunch of songs most bands half their age would kill for. The only thing a Custard show needs now is a reference to Enrique Iglesias for the circle back to Girls Like That to be complete.

Over the past few months, our venues have been pumping with incredible acts. Michael Franti & Spearhead brought their infectious blend of reggae, funk, and soul to the Tanks, leaving the crowd uplifted and energised. Meanwhile, Music In Session at the Court House Gallery showcased some of the best emerging artists in an intimate and captivating setting.

EXHIBITION EXHIBITION

Receive> Respond 2023

The Receive>Respond arts challenge and culminating exhibition provide an opportunity for artists aged 15 to 25 in the Cairns region to share their passion for art and collaboration.

The challenge is simple. This year’s selector, NorthSite Acting Director, Hamish Sawyer, receives all submissions and selects approximately 30 to participate. He then pairs up the artists like a “Secret Santa”. Each artist receives their paired artwork and then creates a new artwork that responds in some way to that image. The resulting exhibition places the paired works together and gives the artists the chance to meet each other and discuss their responses. This challenge highlights the talent and diversity of creative expression here in our own backyard.

Lugger Bort

A CIAF 2023 SATELLITE

EXHIBITION CURATED BY NERELLE NICOL

Lugger Bort is dedicated to the working life of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islanders who worked the pearling, beche-de-mer and trochus industries, living on luggers in Far North Queensland.

The exhibition provides insight into the magnitude of the industry’s operations and the perilous conditions under which these intrepid seafarers faced the watery abyss. This timeless zone fed fears and apprehension into the minds of naive teenagers, as recalled by some of the few remaining Elders with first-hand knowledge of working in this industry.

Lugger Bort verifies the valuable economic contributions these seafarers made to Far North Queensland. It provides glimpses of the roles they played in helping to shape the character of the region, revealing achievement hereto unrecognised.

DEAD PUPPET SOCIETY’S Ishmael by David Morton

Set on a futuristic version of earth that has suffered a catastrophic environmental collapse, the box office hit Ishmael by David Morton is a modern version of Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick, reimagined for a new millennium as a contemporary space saga.

Planet Earth has been so badly polluted, the surface is smothered in a layer of thick, toxic clouds. With tight control over the tops of the tallest mountains where the air remains fresh, only the elite corporate class breathe clean air. The story follows the journey of Ishmael, a refugee who has been living in a corporation sanctioned camp below the clouds, on the darkened surface of earth.

Hailed by critics as ‘a new kind of storytelling’ and ‘unlike anything else hitting the stage’, Ishmael is a visually compelling experience like no other.

Tracks

Talking Pictures invites you to explore the history and power of the moving image. Fiona Sewell, former journalist and die-hard movie buff, will moderate a lively discussion with special guests from the film before a feature length screening.

Tracks is the true story of a young woman, Robyn Davidson, who in 1977 decided to embark on a 2,700 kilometre trek from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, crossing the harsh Australian outback. Accompanied only by her dog and four camels, Davidson had no other purpose than to reach the ocean and find herself on journey of self-discovery.

Special guest, Matthew Bligh, founder of Millstream Productions, worked as the Video Split Operator on Tracks, traversing a wild desert terrain and capturing stunning footage along the way that augments this extraordinary tale.
