IN THIS ISSUE
Buckle up, folks! Summer is almost here, and so is our latest issue packed with more artsy goodness than a gallery gift shop (which, coincidentally, now includes Tanks merch... but more on that later).
In this edition, you’ll discover the story of the incredible flamenco outfit, Arte Kanela, ahead of their performance and workshops here in November at the Tanks Arts Centre (page 28).
Our Creative Life staff spotlight (page 14) introduces you to the Creative Placemaker who brings community and creativity together, and we’re thrilled to sit down with local legend Ricky Beresford—artist, music tragic, and the creative behind our new line of Tanks merchandise (page 23). We’re very excited to announce that Tanks Arts Centre has
just launched its very own merch line, so you can now literally wear your love for the arts on your sleeve (or hat, or tote bag… you get the idea).
Dive into our summer exhibition schedule at our galleries where contemporary and First Nations works tell the story of the region’s evolving identity.
So grab a cold drink (and maybe a new Tanks tote), and jump into a summer full of creativity, sunshine, and just the right amount of sass. You’re going to love every page.

Women Ink Exhibition
Showcasing Far North Queensland’s vibrant filmmaking talent, Understory Film Festival highlights the best short filmmakers from the region.
We invite you to witness our great local talent with two captivating events in November. The Screening and Awards Night at Munro Martin Parklands and the Industry Exchange at Tanks Arts Centre.
The celebration then extends into the new year with a touring program, bringing the best of local filmmaking to remote and regional communities across Far North Queensland.
INDUSTRY EXCHANGE AT TANKS ARTS CENTRE
FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER | 7PM - 10PM | FREE
This evening promises a unique blend of networking and inspiration, as we hear from Screen Queensland, Screenworks, and ABC about the latest opportunities and programs. There is also a facilitated Q&A with Screen Industry organisations and filmmakers, providing insight into creating pathways for a career in the Screen Industry and highlighting the valuable experience gained from attending these programs.
The Authentic NQ Program will also premiere three short documentaries; Alden Lyall with Empowering Dreams | Nurturing Talent, Josaphine Seale with Bringing Back the Good Fire, and Garth Edwards and Chedwa Whyte with No Plan B. All offering intimate glimpses into the lives and passions of local Indigenous storytellers.
This will be followed by the first public screening of Tullywell, a short film produced by the inaugural Film Intensive Script to Screen (FISS) team. Tullywell is a short mockumentary comedy set in the fictional FNQ town of Tullywell that is known for two things: Sugar Cane and its annual UFO Festival.
FISS, a Screen Queensland initiative, will be offered in Cairns across February to May 2025. Selected participants from both Brisbane and Cairns receive entry-level intensive training, including mentorship from industry professionals, to hands-on filmmaking experience through a series of workshops and the production of short films.
This event provides a valuable opportunity for local creatives to connect with key players in the Australian screen industry and gain insights into the latest opportunities in the field.
SCREENING AND AWARDS NIGHT AT MUNRO MARTIN PARKLANDS
SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER | FROM 6.30PM | FROM $18
The festival culminates with a magical open-air screening at the picturesque Munro Martin Parklands.
Hosted by acclaimed actor Jimi Bani, known for his stellar performances in ABC’s The Straits, his portrayal of Koiki ‘Eddie’ Mabo in the telefeature Mabo, and his roles in acclaimed productions such as Bluewater Empire, Redfern Now, Remote Area Nurse, Black Comedy, plus numerous theatre productions.
This event will showcase the festival’s finalist shortlist under the stars, followed by an awards ceremony. With major prizes of $2,500 each for Best Film and People’s Choice, the stakes are high for participating filmmakers.
This night promises to be a celebration of local cinematic achievements and the diverse talents of our region’s storytellers.
UNDERSTORY FILM FESTIVAL TOURING PROGRAM
DECEMBER 2024 - FEBRUARY 2025
The Understory Film Festival’s impact extends beyond these events. From December 2024 to early February 2025, Understory will partner with the RASNTN (Regional Arts Services Network Tropical North) to bring these films to remote and regional communities across Far North Queensland, exposing regional and remote audiences to a broader screen culture to people who would not otherwise have access to such diverse content. It will also motivate aspiring filmmakers from the regions to share their stories through film, with the knowledge that Understory can provide a strong and viable platform to screen their future work.

MOSES WARUSAM
Moses Warusam launched his newest album, Collaboration, at the Elixir Music House in August. This remarkable album funded by RADF unites Moses with five exceptionally talented singer-songwriters from Far North Queensland, aiming to nurture and elevate each artist’s musical journey.
For each track, Moses either composed original pieces or selected existing works to collaborate on. Featured artists—Trevor Takkos, Sharmaine Drieberg, Rohan Rusch, Marcus Warusam, and Daniel Gileppa—each bring their unique songwriting styles and vocal abilities, enhancing the album’s overall sound.
“Without RADF funding, music artists like me would find it challenging to progress in the competitive music industry. I am so grateful for RADF’s continual support and belief in investing in the performing arts and culture of this region. No wonder our region is one of this country’s most vibrant hotspots. This project I know will reinforce RADF’s commitment and showcase the positive results of that faith.”
Collaboration is available on Bandcamp moseswarusam.bandcamp.com
Normey-Jay
Norman Johnson, also known as Normey-Jay, is a Yidinji/ Gunggandji/ Thanawith man, a talented singer-songwriter and music producer. Raised on Palm Island and Yarrabah, Normey-Jay has been sharing his passion for music since a young age. His performances are a celebration of culture and tradition, incorporating traditional dancing moves and inspiring audiences to participate.
Normey-Jay, in collaboration with Deadly Indigenous Youth Doing Good and their Native Music Mentorship program, received a RADF grant for a photoshoot with local Aboriginal artists and photographers Bernard Lee Singleton and Simone Arnol. The images will be used as his promotional materials for music gigs both locally and nationally, adding to his press pack, biography, and website.

BEHIND THE ARTS
We chat with Kim Jameson whose primary role within Creative Life is to breathe new life into urban landscapes, fostering creativity, collaboration, and a deeper sense of community.
Can you share the most unexpected twist or turn in your career that led you here?
I began my career as a community artist in the UK, using arts and culture to empower individuals and communities.
My first role involved using theatre and music in prisons and probation services, focusing on Augustus Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed to support those without a voice to utilise arts as a vehicle to express their stories.
This led to work in local government, but a move to the USA required me to start over. I volunteered at the Frist Museum of Art in Nashville, eventually becoming the Director of Evaluation, Outreach, and Public Programs.
Ten years ago, I relocated to Australia, shifting to strategic roles in local government and not-for-profits. As the leader of the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA, I advocated for the sector, lobbying on key issues and gaining insights into the challenges faced by artists and arts organisations.
In your experience, what role does art play in fostering a sense of belonging in a community?
Culture is the heartbeat of a place—it shapes its identity, reflects its strengths, and honours our history. From the vibrant expressions of First Peoples to the diverse multicultural experiences celebrated through food, language, art, music, film, and festivals, culture is a tapestry woven from history, creativity, and innovation.
Culture is also a powerful force for addressing critical social issues such as health, crime, and inclusion. It opens pathways to equitable participation, fostering creative development, with active and meaningful engagement. Strong, resilient communities grow from authentic and strategic place-based initiatives that build social cohesion, celebrate identity, and enhance a sense of purpose.
Can you tell us about a time when a small, unconventional idea completely transformed a public space?
As the Arts Strategy Officer at City of Mandurah, I was entrusted with a significant project: working closely with the Binjareb people of the Noongar Nation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yaburgurt’s passing, a respected First Nations leader.
During the first six months, I immersed myself in conversations with Traditional Owners, taking their lead in how best to engage the broader community. Rather than leading the project, I worked with community to guide the process, using my expertise as a creative planner to ensure the artistic vision was realised with integrity and high standards. Through respectful and patient yarning circles, we collectively envisioned a public art project that would celebrate Yaburgurt’s legacy. The themes of tolerance, understanding, and reconciliation became central to the project, offering both residents and visitors a deeper connection to Mandurah’s diverse history and heritage while showcasing the unique character of the area.
This approach enabled us to secure over $200,000 in Royalties for Regions funding. We collaborated with esteemed artist Peter Farmer, who worked alongside a wide range of community groups to create a public artwork that united the community.
The outcome was profound: the First Nations community felt acknowledged and included, and the wider community gained a deeper appreciation of local Indigenous history. This project truly brought the community together, fostering a greater sense of understanding and connection.
How does it feel to experience the creative melting pot of this region?
Here in Cairns, I have been so impressed with the quality, passion and dedication of the internal team and those working in the industry across the region and beyond.

REGULAR RICK
Celebrating Aussie Music, Contemporary Art, and 30 Years of the Tanks
What do you get when you cross a hopeless music tragic with no (self-confessed) musical skill? You get an artist who funnels his love for music into other creative projects.
Meet Regular Rick, or you may know him as Ricky Beresford, a Cairns-based visual artist and teacher who is the mastermind behind several exciting projects at Tanks Arts Centre.
“Music plays a huge part of my life. So, I don’t play an instrument and I can’t sing (although I do try occasionally), but I’m always listening to music. It’s just part of my life. Even in an art sense. Like, every time I make art there’s always music going on, and lots of previous artwork I’ve made is directly connected to a song in some way, shape or form.”
In 2023, Ricky held an exhibition, Soundtracked (50 Years of Australian Music) - a visual soundtrack of memories linked to songs that held personal meaning. Accompanying the exhibition was Life Sounds Like…, a film capturing the stories and memories from 40 Cairns locals – all connected to Australian songs – which was screened at Tank 5.
In 2024, those 40 stories have had new life breathed into them by a collective of 30 established artists, including Ricky, and converted into the second iteration of Life Sounds Like… an exhibition at Tank 4 Gallery (see page 33).
Ricky’s connection to the Tanks is undeniable – whether you see him soaking up tunes at Tank 5, supporting his students at events, or showcasing his own art at Tank 4, he’s a face that’s familiar to many. With his love for both art and music, it was only fitting that Ricky designed the brand new Tanks merchandise.
“So, it’s 30 years of the Tanks Arts Centre, and I thought it was important to try to come up with something that kind of captured the excitement of going to a gig at the Tanks, and the art side as well, so I kind of played with this idea of, Vibrating Ears for 30 Years, and used one of the figures that I kind of like to do, holding your guitar that I thought kind of captured it all.”
The design began as a lino print base which he experimented with using different techniques like spray painting and drawing over the top, eventually arriving at the artwork featured on the merch. The character is a recurring figure across many of Ricky’s artworks, giving the artwork an unmistakable Regular Rick stamp, and perfectly blending Tanks Arts Centre’s love for music and art.
Merchandise is now available to purchase at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, Tank 5 gigs and at the Life Sounds Like… exhibition launch.
Life Sounds Like...
EXHIBITION: Fri 8 Nov - Sun 15 Dec

Creating Space for All
Accessibility and Inclusion in Cairns Arts and Culture
In 2024, Cairns Regional Council’s Creative Life made remarkable progress in its Strategy for Arts and Disability, reinforcing its commitment to making the arts accessible for everyone in the community.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE:
Visual Stories Initiative
In partnership with Autism Queensland, the Cairns Performing Arts Centre and Tanks Arts Centre launched online guides that help visitors navigate potential sensory challenges before their visit. This initiative helps visitors prepare and feel more comfortable in these spaces. This innovative approach is set to expand to other cultural venues soon.
Enhanced Accessibility Information
All cultural venues updated their websites to include dedicated accessibility tabs, simplifying the process for patrons to access important information.
Relaxed Performances
The team hosted Relaxed Performance training and an industry forum, culminating in successful relaxed performance shows at the Cairns Children’s Festival, featuring productions Erth’s Shark Dive and The One Who Planted Trees.
Linguistic Inclusivity
The Melbourne SKA Orchestra performance at Tanks Arts Centre was made more inclusive with Auslan interpretation by Stage Left, catering to the D/deaf and hard-of-hearing community and attendees. With more Auslan Interpreted shows planned for 2025.
Quiet Spaces
Low-sensory areas were debuted at both the Cairns Children’s Festival and Cairns Festival. These calming areas provide a retreat from the hustle, bustle and excitement of festival activity. Resource kits are now available at all Council cultural venues, ensuring visitors have access to tools that can help them feel more comfortable and a dedicated space to chill out.
Support for Artists with Disabilities
The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) backed impactful projects, including Tristan Harris’s The Mind of a Street Kid exhibition and art supplies for Scotia Hennessy to build her arts practice business. Additionally, the ARC Disability Beyond the Waves Regional Tour was supported to promote inclusive arts practices across the region.
These initiatives are just the beginning of Creative Life’s ongoing mission to cultivate an inclusive arts and culture landscape in Cairns. The Council invites community to share their feedback to continue breaking down barriers and enhancing the arts for all. Together, we’re crafting a vibrant, accessible cultural future!
Flamenco Fire
Arte Kanela at Tanks Arts Centre
Internationally renowned flamenco ensemble
Arte Kanela is set to light up the Tanks Arts Centre in November with an electrifying performance that promises to transport audiences straight to the heart of Spain. Known for their fierce passion, precision, and deeply emotional expression, Arte Kanela has built a reputation as one of the most dynamic flamenco groups in the world.
Founded by artistic director Johnny Tedesco and his brother, virtuoso guitarist Richard Tedesco, Arte Kanela fuses traditional flamenco with innovative choreography, delivering performances that are as technically impressive as they are soul-stirring. LIFE SOUNDS LIKE...
A PROJECT BY REGULAR RICK
Music is a powerful trigger of memory. It is uncanny how a song can instantly transport you back in time. Whether it be a moment of joy or despair, love or heartbreak, frustration or peace. Life Sounds Like… is a project that explores this through an Australian music lens.
In 2023 Regular Rick produced a film celebrating the power of music by documenting a diverse collection of memories and stories from 40 different Cairns residents. Each story and/or memory was directly connected to an Australian song. This year Regular Rick invited a cross section of Cairns visual artists and creatives to respond to the stories and songs within the film. Life Sounds Like… is both a response to the film and a continuing celebration of all things Oz Music.

SUBJECT TO CHANGE
LACHLAN MACKEE
Subject to Change is a residency and exhibition project, its title as much about the artist as the process of creation.
After 14 years in the police force working as a child abuse investigator, Lachlan Mackee was gifted wheel-throwing lessons and immediately bonded with clay. The meditative state reached while throwing on the wheel, the grounded connection to the earth and artistic expression of a solid material turned fluid are what fuels his creative exploration. In 2023, Lachlan established Service Ceramics, focusing on creating utilitarian tableware and vessels heavily inspired by Japanese and Indian ceramics.
Lachlan spent the majority of 2024 in India studying traditional production pottery and wood firing and brings his learnings to the Tanks for a month of making and sharing. Lachlan will be in his studio/exhibition space making a target of 100 works for wood firing.

THOMAS DEN ENGELSMAN
OSTRAHOP (AND OTHER PLANETS IN MY UNIVERSE)
There is a universe of planets and the creatures who inhabit them that has grown inside the imaginative head of Thomas Den Englesman. How they get in there is a process.
What began as an exercise in exploring characters in popular culture, suddenly became something else altogether when Thomas abandoned everything he knew and replaced it with his own invented mythology.
Thomas’s works begin as pencil drawings in a sketch pad, which he then photographs, uploads to his computer, and renders, colours and textures to produce bizarre digital artworks. Along the way, planets and species receive names, back stories emerge, and environmental ecosystems evolve.
Don’t miss this debut solo exhibition by a local emerging artist whose work is truly other-worldly.

(RE)CONNECTION: CULTURE, COUNTRY & PEOPLE
A time and space to connect
Since time immemorial, First Nations people’s cultural identity are formed by their bloodlines, kinship systems, and connection to their Country. Indigenous cultural practices are maintained through rituals, storytelling, oral history, dance, song, and art making. Each group is connected by their sense of culture, honour, and knowledge. Colonialism in its essence sought to destroy, divide, and disconnect Sovereign First Nations people from Culture, Country, and each other. Despite attempts to extinguish and assimilate First Nations people, they continued to practice and maintain culture though traditional or contemporary forms of cultural and artistic expression.

PAPER TIGERS
AN ANTHOLOGY OF AUSTRALIAN PHOTOJOURNALISM BY HEAD ON FOUNDATION
A celebration of Australian photojournalism, Paper Tigers features sixty images from sixty of the best Australian photojournalists. Paper Tigers began as a simple print swap between friends and grew into a much larger project resulting in this major exhibition and a book to celebrate Australian Photojournalism, both produced by Head On Foundation. Paper Tigers premiered at Head On Photo Festival, Sydney in 2020.
Moshe Rosenzveig OAM is the founder and artistic director of the Head On Photo Festival. Brian Cassey is a multiaward-winning photojournalist based in Cairns but active globally. Together, they have assembled a collection that offers a snapshot of Australia over the past four decades – images that define modern Australia, reflect our culture, make political statements, and represent diverse aspects of our world.

A PHOTOGRAPHER’S LIFE PART THREE: THE PORTRAITS
BRIAN
CASSEY
Brian Cassey has covered stories and events as a photojournalist for Australian, UK, American, and European media publications for several decades. All that time, he’s been based right here in Cairns.
Brian’s trilogy of exhibitions launched with Part One at Tanks Arts Centre (2017), Part Two at Court House Gallery (2021) and now Part Three (2025) at Mulgrave Gallery.
Rather than attempting another retrospective exhibition, Part Three concentrates on the ordinary people (and the extraordinary people) Brian has encountered in recent years; from a bus stop on Lake Street to a wedding party in India. Evident in all these portraits is the honesty and dignity Brian finds within his subjects, and the trust they have for Brian.

WORD ON THE STREET
PHOTOJOURNALISM BY THE YOUTH OF OUR CITY
You might not read about it in the papers, but there are stories, there are issues, and there are events that happen in our community that young people know something about.
Word on the Street tells some of those stories through photographs taken in recent months by young photoenthusiasts. They set their own journalistic assignments under guidance by photojournalist, Brian Cassey and with Cairns Local News cadet journalist, Isaac Colman. Their mission is to seek out and document the social and cultural happenings that are important to the youth of our region.
Word on the Street is a perfect companion exhibition to Brian Cassey’s A Photographer’s Life Part Three and Head On Foundation’s Paper Tigers, offering a local and youthful counterpoint to the work of seasoned professionals – and a glimpse into the future of media coverage through the lens of the next generation.

SEX-CHANGE, SCREENS, AND THE
SECRET SIGNALS OF THE SCARINI
MICHELLE BRAYSHAW
Artist, educator, and author, Michelle Brayshaw presents the culmination of her science-based, visual art practice-led master’s research degree. Michelle’s stunning photographic works and paintings offer a glimpse into the complex world of the Scarini and their intrinsic link with the reef and nurtures a love and understanding for this beautiful world.
Sex-change, Screens and the Secret Signals of the Scarini celebrates and reveals the transient colours of the Parrotfish who constantly change through the colours and patterns of their beautiful bodies. This both camouflages and imparts secret signals which entice sexual behaviour, reveal their erratic moods and display curious social behaviours. Scarini are protogynous sequential hermaphrodites and can change sex from coral-coloured females to gorgeous rainbow-coloured male wonders.
