RECEIVE > RESPOND
Receive>Respond is an initiative that provides a platform for young creatives to collaborate, expand their horizons, and share their passion for art with the community. The 2024 exhibition promises to be an exciting showcase of talent, taking place at Tank 4 Gallery from 30 May to 30 June and featuring the works of artists aged 15-25 from the Cairns region.
The exhibition follows a simple yet innovative format, comprising three fundamental steps. Firstly, each artist creates an artwork. It can be in any medium and can represent any theme of the artist’s choosing. Secondly, entries are selected and secretly paired up by Cairns Art Gallery curator, Kylie Burke. Each pair of artists receive each other’s artwork, without knowing each other’s identity (Receive). Thirdly, each artist creates a second artwork in response to the piece they received (Respond). Not until launch night do the artists find out who they were matched with and what their response was.
This process not only encourages artists to push their boundaries and develop their skills but also fosters meaningful connections and conversations within the artistic community.
The resulting exhibition is a testament to the diversity of styles, mediums, and themes present among young creatives. Each pair of artworks, displayed side-by-side, invites viewers and artists alike to analyse and discuss the relationship between them. Some responses may offer a fresh perspective or interpretation, while others may further explore the themes introduced by the original piece.
Moreover, Receive>Respond serves as a valuable learning opportunity for young creative practitioners. This year’s Youth Curator, Bianca Sordelli, brings firsthand experience as a past participant in the exhibition. Bianca will lead the curation of the exhibition, contributing to the development of the next generation of artists.
Bianca’s enthusiasm for the project underscores its significance in the journey of young artists. As she aptly puts it, the exhibition is “essential” for their growth and development. By fostering collaboration, dialogue, and mentorship, Receive>Respond plays a vital role in nurturing artistic talent and enriching the cultural landscape of the Cairns region.
Receive>Respond opens at the Tanks Arts Centre Gallery on Thursday 30 May and runs until Sunday 30 June. The exhibition launch takes place at 6pm on Friday 31 May. All are welcome.

LIVE IN TANK 5
It’s a sultry day in tropical North Queensland and the sacred space of the Tank 5 Green Room, its walls garnished with signed framed posters of all the artists who have come before, buzzes with the tangible energy only a live performance can bring.
The enigmatic lead singer of Canadian rock band The Tea Party, Jeff Martin, is inhouse rehearsing prior for a national tour with the band, and prepping for soundcheck for his very special solo show in Tank 5. His guitar is tuned, he takes a seat and soundchecks the mic, then stares straight down the barrel of the camera lens set up inside the room.
“This is
the Tanks Green Room Sessions.
The Tanks Arts Centre is one of my favourite venues in Australia, and I’m extremely proud to be here.”
The concept of the Green Room Sessions is simple: We invite a musician or band into the revered Tank 5 Green Room, ask them to whip out their instruments, stick microphones in front of them and ask them to play a song they love. It might be one of their songs, or it could be a cover, and there’s only one rule - that the performance and equipment used is (mostly) unplugged. Think of the Green Room Sessions as the love child between Triple J’s Like A Version and NPR’s Tiny Desk Series. The performance is filmed live, one take, a stripped-down mini gig backstage, in a place mostly only artists and entourage get to see.
Much like the inspiration from Like A Version and Tiny Desk, the aim of the Green Room Sessions is to showcase the artist, keeping things as natural and intimate as possible. Two cameras, one light and a mic is all it takes to create a whole lot of magic.
The Green Room Sessions is more than just a backstage gig. It’s more than clicks and likes in an online world. It’s about authenticity of the artist and the space; it’s the magic that’s created away from a full setup and backline. Here in the Tank 5 Green Room, it’s about stripping away all pretense, showing a little vulnerability and a whole lot of talent.
See all past performances on our YouTube Channel, and keep your eyes on Tanks socials for new Green Room Sessions soon!

Swing into The Sunshine Club
From the pen of highly respected Indigenous writer and director Wesley Enoch comes The Sunshine Club, a captivating musical transporting audiences to post-war Brisbane.
Described as an ‘unashamedly feel-good musical’ The Sunshine Club is an exceptional story of local history and an optimistic message of community strength in diversity, a story as topical and relevant today as it was over 20 years ago when the play was first commissioned.
It’s the summer of 1946, and the story centres around Aboriginal soldier Frank Doyle. Frankie has just returned home from World War II with the idea that because he fought alongside white people in the war that things back home would be different and more accepting. Sadly he discovers that although the wider world has changed, the same attitudes and prejudices still exist. Having contributed to the war effort with equal status in the army alongside his white Australian mates, he comes back to find that he must continue living under segregation and a curfew, with restricted right of movement on his side of the Brisbane River.
Frank is determined to change things for the better – and in doing so, he creates The Sunshine Club: a place for people of all races and backgrounds to come together, laugh, fall in love, and dance the night away. The Sunshine Club is also the place where Frank sets out to win the heart of Rose, the beautiful girl from next door. Rose is also the daughter of the local Reverend, and the story starts to focus on the hurdles they face within a mixed race relationship in the ‘40s.
The musical score is made up of upbeat dance tunes that have the jive, bunny hop and ballroom dancing steps of the period at their core. The songs have a jazz swing and rhythm to them, with some memorable tunes, not least the title song, ‘The Sunshine Club’, full of hope and joy, and the yearning finale, ‘If Not Now Then When?’
The Sunshine Club is a heart-warming but equally tragic story of one man’s struggle to find justice in an unjust world. It’s about racial inequality but it also touches on female gender inequality as well as oppression, violence and police brutality.
Queensland Theatre audiences first fell in love with The Sunshine Club in 1999. The First Nations artists behind its original production are now household names. Just when the world needs a beacon of hope, this glorious musical classic is here to leave you grinning and tapping your toes along with the next generation of deadly talent.
Don’t miss The Sunshine Club on Thursday 18 July at CPAC. Tickets from ticketlink.com.au

CHARCoAL EXHIBITION
It’s a Friday morning and the general buzz of a working arts centre is underway – the hum of a pottery wheel, the scratching of ceramic carving, the quiet chatter and laughter amongst artists and the squeak of a printmaking press as Yarrabah Arts & Cultural Precinct prepares for an upcoming their exhibition, Charcoal, at Court House Gallery Cairns.
At the heart of this exhibition is the works by the arts centre artists, but they’ve also brought together many from across the community of Yarrabah (Gunggandji Country) to help tell its stories.
“[This exhibition] is about showcasing Yarrabah. Not just the Yarrabah Arts & Cultural Precinct, but Yarrabah as a whole, and for me Charcoal brings that together.” says Simone Arnol, Yarrabah Arts & Cultural Precinct Manager. “[Charcoal] is such a versatile source and it’s also about regrowth as well, and I think that really plays an important part in how everything is happening and around Australia at the moment.”
Artist, Aunty Michelle Yeatman, volunteers a couple of days a week at the arts centre. “This is my therapy, coming here and doing ceramics… It’s good with the other artists all joining and coming together as one.” she says. “It’ll showcase making a name for the Yarrabah community, and showing them what we do at the art centre. And just being proud of ourselves for this exhibition.”
As Aunty Michelle told us, “Without fire, there’s no charcoal.” For this exhibition, the Gunggandji Mandingabay-Yidinji Rangers conducted a burn and collected materials from Country, which will be featured inside the gallery, along with traditional fire sticks crafted by Garth Murgha, and a twist on Aunty Michelle’s signature hand-built and carved ceramic balls. These pots will be painted black to represent charcoal and will be illuminated from within to emulate fire and the use of pots as a charcoal oven.
Master potter, Uncle Chris Harris, and emerging artist, Salome Yeatman, are also tackling the topic of the cooking element of charcoal.
Uncle ChrisHarris& Pat r i c ai
Uncle Chris has been doing ceramics for over 50 years and has recently joined the arts centre. His skill is evident as you watch him throw perfect vessel after vessel with his little furry companion, Patricia, at his heels. For the exhibition he is creating beautiful wheelthrown cups and bowls which he is renowned for.
EMBERS OF CREATIVITY
Salome’s story is about the gathering of the wirral (scallop) shell which is used in cooking. It’s usually collected by light children who can go out on mudflats on boards to collect the shells. Complimenting this is a sculptural piece symbolising the spirit of the charcoal – smoke.
Harder hitting is Aunty Philomena Yeatman’s contribution. “Her works speak loud. It’s honouring our old people,” says Simone.
“[Charcoal] brings back memories for the Stolen Generation… I’m creating breastplates with charcoal because, in the olden days, when they used to grab fair children, our ancestors used to [rub charcoal] on them to make them a bit darker so they won’t be taken,” Aunty Philomena laments. “For me, it’s very sad… It’s a very sad story for what happened to our ancestors. Especially our Grannies.”
This sparks heavy emotion from Simone, “It’s going to be bang in your face and I think it’s important as well because the launch of this exhibition is on Reconciliation Week. So, it’s just that truth telling and getting that story out there and just that constant reminder for that reconciliation to happen.”
Accompanying the breastplates will be photographic works by Simone, and paintings by Elverina Johnson, which also speak to the Stolen Generation Story of charcoal.
Continuing traditions is also an important theme across the exhibition. Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services - Women’s Group will be showcasing works that represent charcoal’s use for cleaning teeth, while the aptly named Buri Guman Irribamu (One Fire) dance group from Yarrabah Secondary School, led by Nathan Schrieber, will be doing a collaborative piece demonstrating dancing around the fire, and how dance brings everyone together.
Simone explains, “[Charcoal] is making our artwork and stories come to life and more importantly, just that transfer of knowledge… Talking to our Elders and getting their permission to make our stories come to life through artwork as well. And then you’re having the kids come and be part of it, and yeah, it’s just that transfer of knowledge and making that story come alive.”.
Charcoal by Yarrabah Arts & Cultural Precinct is on at Court House Gallery from 25 May to 13 July 2024. You are warmly invited to attend the official launch on Saturday 25 May, which features a special performance by Uncle David Mundraby’s Dabul Dancers and the Buri Guman Irribamu (One Fire) dancers.

A Spotlight on Sound and Lighting Pathways
SCOTTHARNEY
NATHANMUNN
AIDENELMADJA
In the world of sound and lighting, where one wrong switch can cause creative chaos, mentors serve as indispensable guides, illuminating the path for aspiring technicians.
At Cairns Performing Arts Centre, the mentor/mentee narrative is one of shared passion, skill refinement, and the continuity of expertise that ensures the evolution of excellence in live event production. We speak to Senior Technician Scott Harney alongside Nathan Munn and Aiden El Madja, two theatre technicians who have worked their way through a mentorship to employment at CPAC.
HOW DID YOU GET HERE? DESCRIBE YOUR CAREER PATHWAY
NATHAN I got this job through Redlynch State College where I completed a Cert III in Live Production. The school does the RACE Showcase (Redlynch Arts Courses of Excellence), and I was fortunate enough to assist on the desk with Scott Harney, who has been teaching and mentoring me since then. That’s when I knew what I wanted to do. I go back to the school regularly to assist with the Enterprise program.
AIDEN I’ve just finished Grade 12 at Cairns State High, and I’ve been interested in AV since I was 6. I would always go to shows at the Tanks with my parents and chat to desk operators. The Young Company has a fantastic Technical Theatre program, which is where I started. That evolved into a role at the Cairns Convention Centre, and through that I met Scott Harney.
WHAT MAKES YOU WANT TO IMPART YOUR KNOWLEDGE?
SCOTT Essentially it’s the innate joy in doing so. Through my own career, I feel quite confident there’s not much I haven’t experienced. It wasn’t until I started spending more time with younger techs that I realised I genuinely loved that teaching role.
WHAT PART OF THE TECHNICAL PROCESS DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
SCOTT When you go on tour with big shows, you’re a member of a big crew, and it’s a wellrehearsed machine. However, when you work with community groups or amateur shows, they often have all the motivation and inspiration but not quite the experience. Here, the role of a technician moves more into a more creative input. Helping other people realise their own creativity is wonderful.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PUTTING ON A SHOW/WHAT MAKES A GOOD SHOW?
AIDEN The million dollar question! It’s a combination of teamwork, cooperation, communication - what is the director’s vision, and how can the lighting and sound elements amplify that vision. There’s no real definite answer to what makes a good show. What makes a bad show, however…
DO YOU THINK YOU’D HAVE FOUND THIS PATHWAY WITHOUT A MENTOR?
NATHAN I think every young technician should have a mentor to guide them through the first stages of this path. I was lucky to have two through grade 11 + 12, and because of the course I really enjoyed high school. I go back to the school regularly to assist with the Enterprise program, and do some paid work experience.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER THOSE WANTING TO BREAK INTO THIS ROLE?
NATHAN If you’re passionate about it, be vocal. Make it known that’s the direction you want to go, and people who can assist will inevitably want to help.
AIDEN While the beauty of a fully produced show can be overwhelming and it’s easy to feel insignificant in this giant space, you’ll never know what you can achieve unless you apply yourself. If it’s something that interests you, just give it a go. Apply yourself. Don’t give up on your dreams.

The theme for this year is My North Queensland – Then and Now. Our region is constantly changing, the environment, the people, and the climate. All of us, those Indigenous to the land, pioneering families, farmers and workers, students, backpackers, and the many, many people who choose Far North Queensland as their home, hold precious memories and moments of living here. It might be a special building, celebration, or street that they called home for many years, or maybe today is their best life!

DENNIS MAGEE
Dennis Magee is a Brisbane based artist and educator of Northern Irish origin.
His current project is creating a series of small watercolour and gouache paintings that explore the relationship between the complexity of forms, structures and lines in the Australian rainforest, and coincidental iconography in ‘Hiberno-Saxon’ style that adorns Irish medieval illuminated manuscripts. Dennis’s conviction is that this imagery is of itself derived from the forms and structures of the long vanished, temperate rainforests that covered Ireland. Not unlike the Australian forests, those in Ireland were destroyed by the British colonisers, both for commercial gain and because of their cultural significance.

THE ONE WHO PLANTED TREES BY
SPARE PARTS PUPPET THEATRE
Bandicoot, Koala and a very fun-loving Frill Necked Lizard regale their story - part truth, part myth but mostly inspiration - of a woman who transforms her world to bring about hope and happiness for herself and the world around her.
Do you ever wonder how much just one person out of 7.8 billion can really accomplish?
Inspired by Jean Giono’s The Man Who Planted Trees The One Who Planted Trees is an inspirational story that proves just how much one person can do and will have you humming out of the theatre, pulling out the spade and watering plants into the ground.
In the face of a global climate emergency, how can we find hope? What good can one person do? This is a fun joyous springboard for serious discussion about our world and the environment we all value.

MAKING MY MARK
MOLLY DUNCAN
“Creativity is what you do with your imagination,” says local artist, Molly Duncan.
“Creating abstract art in oil and cold wax medium allows me to be spontaneous, just letting the painting take me where it wants to go. It’s a quiet conversation and happy accidents happen along the way, but I just trust the process and embrace the imperfections and to me that’s what art is all about.”
The direction of Molly’s work is evoked from memories of travel experiences in Europe, North America, and Asia. Molly paints intuitively, starting with a humble mark which expands into a line, which goes on a journey to all parts of her canvas. It may end up as a landscape of the Daintree, a sunset in Kota Kinabalu Borneo, or an evening at the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo.

‘Admiring a scene rather than clicking away at the camera leaves a better impression for capturing a scenery. Last Christmas I spent a few days in this location and visited the iconic Salamanca Art centre where many Tasmanian artists exhibit their work at the numerous galleries. Putting oil paints and cold wax to paper and painting intuitively allows you to paint loosely and freely and therefore capturing the essence of an abstract landscape.’

The challenge is simple. Artists create an artwork and then are paired Secret Santa style with another artist. Each artist responds to their received artwork with a new artwork and voila, Receive>Respond
The resulting exhibition places the paired works together and gives the artists the chance to meet each other and discuss their responses.
The challenge highlights the talent and diversity of creative expression here in our own backyard.
