artist v artist MIA DYSON & MARTY BROWN
From Parking Lots to Tender Hearts
Mia Dyson could be the coolest musician going around, ranked amongst the top guitarists in the world. Lady Valiant guitarist Marty Brown chats with Mia on influences, albums, and - of course - guitars.
Your music blends blues, rock, and folk. How do you stay true to these genres while keeping your own sound?
When I’m writing, I’m really not thinking about genre. In the early days, I was much more influenced by blues, as it’s what I grew up on. And then folk and rock as I got into my early twenties. Now I just try to find the voice that each song requires. Sometimes that doesn’t happen until the recording process, and the song becomes something entirely different.
MIA DYSON
MARTY BROWN
Your dad, Jim Dyson, is a renowned skilled guitar luthier. How has growing up with a master craftsman of guitars influenced your music and appreciation for the instrument?
As a kid, I was pretty oblivious to what incredible craftsmanship my dad had. He made guitars from start to finish, from scratch on his own. Unlike most guitarists, I never had the experience of being given a cheap first guitar and graduating up and going to guitar stores. My dad’s craft was all I knew. And because he played and made electric guitars, I really fell in love with the electric guitars specifically. I loved all the different sounds I could make with an amp and pedals. So yeah, Dad and his guitar making had a pretty big influence on me.
Your album Tender Heart was produced independently. How does the creative freedom of self-producing impact your songwriting and recording?
I’ve been really lucky to have the creative freedom to work with the people I’ve wanted to and to be a collaborator rather than a master-and-servant type situation. I always want to work with people who push me out of my comfort zone to do things that sound good but I haven’t yet tried. I’ve definitely done that
on this latest record, Tender Heart. I really gave the producer, Scott Hersch, a lot of rein to push me to strip things away rather than add more things.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians, based on your own experiences and lessons learned along the way?
The best advice is that we are each unique, so allow yourself to be yourself and have your own sound. It’s not necessary to follow a trend or fit into a scene or a fad, and much more satisfying too. Celebrate the wins and learn from the losses. There’s going to be failure - I’ve had plenty of it, and it’s okay. It’s okay to fail and grow to become a better musician.
Catch MIA DYSON on Friday 23 February and Marty Brown with LADY VALIANT on Saturday 16 March at Tanks Arts Centre. Tickets from ticketlink.com.au

SONG WRITING STORY
TELLING ANDREW FARRISS
Andrew Farriss - the name may or may not be instantly recognisable, but his songs most certainly are.
As the brain behind the beats and the mastermind of melodies for the legendary band INXS, he has the musical Midas touch that turns every riff into gold and every lyric into a sing-along anthem; he’s the hero who probably wrote the soundtrack to your high school formal without you even knowing it.
While Andrew Farriss is best known for co-writing all but one of INXS’s hits and was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame for these rock successes, his heart belongs to country. Now, these songs have been released by way of Farriss’ self-titled debut album, which is arguably one of the most accomplished (and most anticipated) records to be released in recent times.
“With country tunes, there’s a frontier sense of freedom. When I was putting this album together, I steered away from clichés, plus I wanted to put my own personality in it. If my album doesn’t sound like anyone else, then that’s a good thing.”
A bluesy, countrified album at its heart, the Nashville-recorded collection
sees Farriss bringing stories of “outlaws, freedom, cowboys and love” to life, with his slick performance style complementing his masterful skills as a country singer.
Headed to the Tanks Arts Centre on March 2nd with full band in tow, this gig promises to be an evening with one of Australia’s most successful and respected artists. There’s a craftsmanship and beauty in these songs; a journey through places, emotions, observations, and experience.
And the next time you find yourself humming an INXS classic, just know that somewhere, Andrew Farriss is casually strumming his guitar thinking, “Nailed it again.”
“One of the reasons many people have warmed to country music is that it isn’t just happy songs,” Farriss explained in a statement. “It’s the sad songs; the gritty subjects that some genres of music won’t go near. That’s what attracts me as a songwriter.
Don’t miss ANDREW FARRISS on Saturday 2 March at Tanks Arts Centre. Tickets from ticketlink.com.au

Meet the Mentors
2024 FLAME VISUAL PROGRAM
Now in its eighth year, the 2024 FLAME Visual mentorship program continues to support young artists maintain an arts practice after leaving school. Provided with opportunities to meet and work with other creatives in the region, the mentees learn new skills and build confidence in their creative abilities and artistic expressions.
Over a three-month period, under the guidance of professional artist mentors, the young artists are prompted to consider exploring various avenues of artistic study, work and creative practice. The mentees are tasked with the challenge of working collaboratively towards an exhibition, simultaneously forming new friendships and developing support networks that will help them maintain future arts practices within the community.
This year, the emerging creatives are fortunate to be mentored by six accomplished and highly motivated Cairns artists: Jack Wilkie-Jans, Julie McEnerny, Kevin Mayo, Kylie Burke, Pam Kusabs and Roland Nancarrow. When asked what aspects of the program they rated the most important, the mentors enthusiastically agreed that sharing, challenging and encouraging the mentees was vital.
THE MENTORS ENTHUSIASTICALLY AGREED THAT SHARING, CHALLENGING AND ENCOURAGING THE MENTEES WAS VITAL.
Approaching the task of mentoring with deep curiosity, Kevin Mayo said he was looking forward to, “the learning curve of working with a mentee group, discovering how they will approach and develop works.” Multi-disciplined artist, arts worker, writer and Aboriginal affairs advocate, Jack Wilkie-Jans, acknowledged the potential far reaching effects of the program, saying that he was looking forward to, “seeing young and emerging artists take up a lifelong interest in professional arts practice or as arts workers.”
The mentorship culminates in the FLAME 2024 exhibition at the iconic Tank 4 Gallery where the realisation of the mentees creative visions will be exhibited alongside artworks by their mentors.
FLAME 2024 launches on Friday 1 March and runs until Sunday 31 March. Entry is free. More information on page 34.

Photograph Exhibition Blends Tradition with Artificial Intelligence
Vibrant creative and technology learning hub in Cairns, Indigenous Design Labs (IDL) stands as a beacon of innovation, breaking new ground by infusing artificial intelligence (AI) into their creative process. At the heart of this technological fusion is the I Am Here exhibition at Court House Gallery, a testament to the rich tapestry of Indigenous belonging and the dynamic threads of cultural heritage intricately woven into the life stories of Elders.
This groundbreaking exhibition explores the essence of Indigenous identity through a captivating blend of traditional photography and cutting-edge AI technologies. In a world often overshadowed by artificiality, I Am Here aims to unveil the true spirit of belonging through real-time connections with those who carry the wisdom of the past. The result is a mesmerising dance of shared experiences and timeless journeys, capturing the essence of Indigenous cultures in a way that transcends the boundaries of conventional artistic expression.
Guided by a committed team of First Nations creative mentors, the young and dynamic team at IDL has spent the past five years pushing the boundaries of what is defined a Indigenous creativity, and working with some of Australia’s leading brands and companies, including MECCA, Target, The EVT Group, Cairns Regional Council, and The Starlight Foundation and more.
Leigh Harris, Aboriginal designer and co-founder of IDL, reflects on the ongoing journey, stating,
“IDL is still a work in progress, but we are doing some amazing work locally and nationally. This exhibition connects these young people back to our Elders and importantly shows them and others who view it that we must never lose connection to them, they are at the heart of our belonging.”
The integration of AI into traditional artistic forms represents more than just a technological leap; it signifies a bridge between the wisdom of the past and the creativity of the future. I Am Here serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of spending time with our old people and fostering a sense of identity, particularly for the younger generation.
The mentorship provided by First Nations leaders adds a layer of depth to the creative process, ensuring that the intersection of tradition and innovation is guided by a profound understanding of Indigenous values. The success of IDL in collaborating with major brands underscores the growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous perspectives, creativity and innovation in diverse sectors.
As IDL continues to evolve, it stands as a shining example of the adaptability and resilience of Indigenous cultures in the face of technological advancements. The work being done locally and nationally by IDL is not only contributing to the creative landscape but also playing a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in new ways.
In a world where technology often threatens to obscure our connection to heritage, IDL is proving that, when harnessed thoughtfully, artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool for amplifying, rather than erasing, the voices of Indigenous communities. I Am Here is a testament to the enduring strength of Indigenous cultures, demonstrating that, with the right blend of tradition and innovation, the past can coexist harmoniously with the future.
I Am Here is on at Court House Gallery (38 Abbott Street, Cairns) until Saturday 2 March. Visit cairns.qld.gov.au/courthousegallery or visit page 33 for more info.

CIRCA CAIRNS FROM THE WET TO THE DRY
In Far North Queensland, nature is an undeniable force with blistering temperatures and wild weather patterns. However, as the southern states get ready to bunker down for their winter season, here in the north it’s a different story.
As the wet season bids adieu, a metamorphosis takes place, casting a spell that captivates the senses and inspires the soul. The vast expanse of savannah is bathed in warm, golden sunlight, where the rhythmic dance of tall grasses sways in harmony with the gentle breeze. The air is imbued with the earthy aroma of eucalyptus and the sweet perfume of blooming wildflowers, creating a sensory symphony that elevates the dry season to an artistic masterpiece. The absence of rain creates a visual poetry that resonates with both power and grace.
It is here that Circa Cairns returns to place with The Dry, the second work in a series of extraordinary encounters between the body and country. Cheeky and chaotic, cool and sparse, Far North Queensland’s dry season breathes new energy into the country and people.
Led by Artistic Director Harley Mann, The Dry draws on lived experience of a seasonal symphony capturing the ephemeral beauty that defines the dry season. Whether it’s the play of light on ancient rock formations, the reflection of the sun setting over the Coral Sea, or the intricate patterns in the cracked red soil, this performance tells a story of resilience, adaptation, and the eternal dance of life in Far North Queensland.
Inspired by this sun soaked landscape, The Dry is a bash screech of joy and mischief from the vibrant people who call this parched terrain home. Blending elite skill with cultural knowledge the Circa Cairns ensemble breathe new soul into circus.
Circa Cairns will be bringing The Dry to CPAC in April.

FOURPLAY STRING QUARTET
How do you describe an orchestral quartet that writes distinctively original music, that performs knockout covers from bands including Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead, Leonard Cohen, and Robert Johnson, and they do it all with virtuosity, gravity, and a sense of humour?
FourPlay shot to prominence in Australia and Europe in the late 90’s as a unique musical phenomenon – an indie rock band that just happened to be a string quartet. They did it all with a DIY ethos and a rather punk attitude for people who had originally met through playing in orchestras.
In the time since, FourPlay have toured internationally and released five studio albums (their most recent featuring 100% original songs), two EPs, an electronic remix album, and a trilogy of mini CDs. They’ve played Carnegie Hall (NYC), The Barbican Centre (London), Usher Hall (Edinburgh), Sydney Opera House (Sydney), and now we welcome them to the Tanks Arts Centre.
SKUNKHOUR WITH SPECIAL GUESTS
Australian alt funk icons Skunkhour are back. Hot off the back of 2022’s EP release, including hit lead track Blue, this unique group are bringing potent rhythms and timeless songs to venues up and down the east coast.
Their live impact and musical legacy are being felt. “Of all the bands at Scene & Heard, Skunkhour sounded the most modern… But they were always ahead of the curve. Weightlessness and Home were highlights, and reminders that Skunkhour were criminally underappreciated in the 90s” - Josh Leeson, © Newcastle Herald/ACM.
Expect all the killer music from the past, as well as the new tracks including their latest single, Rain On Me, which dropped at the end of August 2023.
The funk is coming to take you into summer, with Skunkhour.

COMPOSITIONAL UTTERANCES
MANDY QUADRIO (TRAWLWOOLWAY), SUSAN HAWKINS AND JAN OLIVER
Compositional Utterances is a site-responsive, collaborative exhibition by three artists whose material-led practices share feminist and ecological concerns. The exhibition is the product of deep conversation and collaboration between Brisbane-based artists Mandy Quadrio, Susan Hawkins and Jan Oliver.
The artists’ have practices centred on the formal and narrative potential of their chosen materials: Quadrio works with sea grass, bull kelp and ochres important to her as a Trawlwoolway woman, alongside steel wool; Hawkins works with reclaimed domestic and industrial objects drawing out their potential to make sound and movement; and Oliver uses force and delicacy to alter the surfaces of her materials while considering the co-existence of animate and inanimate entities in the spaces they inhabit.

CEANANNAS (A GREAT HOME)
DENNIS MAGEE
Dennis Magee is a Brisbane based artist and educator of Northern Irish origin.
His current project is creating a series of small watercolour and gouache paintings that explore the relationship between the complexity of forms, structures and lines in the Australian rainforest, and coincidental iconography in ‘Hiberno-Saxon’ style that adorns Irish medieval illuminated manuscripts. Dennis’s conviction is that this imagery is of itself derived from the forms and structures of the long vanished, temperate rainforests that covered Ireland. Not unlike the Australian forests, those in Ireland were destroyed by the British colonisers, both for commercial gain and because of their cultural significance.
See page 44 for information on upcoming workshops. Bookings essential.
