Find information on what’s in the region by narrowing down to categories such as Public Art – you may drive by a mural everyday and wonder what its significance is; perhaps you drink your coffee on a beautifully mosaiced bench; or maybe you’ve always wondered who designed the famous Woven Fish at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon.

FAR NORTH AIR CATS

$10,000 cash support

$5000 in kind support - Tanks venue hire

In the lush setting of Tropical North Queensland, Cairns’ own Far North Air Cats took their aerial circus work to the next level in their full length show, Forbidden Fruit

Presented over two sold-out nights at Tanks Arts Centre, Forbidden Fruit featured dynamic aerial acrobatic performances to tell the tale of Eve, the apple and the serpent. The production allowed local aerial artists to showcase their talents. A RADF Major Round covered $10,000 in expenses, and an Arts and Cultural Assistance Grant covered $5000 of venue hire.

“The RADF grant was extremely helpful in covering some of the crucial production costs” said Far North Air Cats team member Louise Kiiver.

CLOSING 8 MAY

Individual Professional Development Grant

GRETA STANLEY

$1,000 cash support

When Greta Stanley and her band were selected to perform at the BIGSOUND Music Industry Showcase in Brisbane, Australia, in 2022, they knew it would be an opportunity of a lifetime. The showcase is one of the very few opportunities for up-and-coming Australian artists to get noticed by key industry figures such as festival bookers, artist managers, and labels from around Australia and overseas.

Greta was able to connect with female managers at the showcase who she might not have otherwise met, and these connections will help her advance her career as a singer-songwriter.

“Meeting with female managers was a really positive outcome for me,” says Greta. “I have been seeking to obtain female management, and this felt like a crucial step towards that. BIGSOUND and RADF made this more accessible for me.”

That’s why funding like RADF is so important. It brings artists like Greta into contact with influential people who can help them achieve their dreams. And when you’re ready to showcase your artistic talents or take your career in a new direction? That’s when it helps even more!

Arts Capital of Northern Australia

When you think of arts and culture in Australia, you’ll likely think of Sydney, Melbourne, or perhaps Adelaide. But Cairns is emerging as one of the most exciting cities for artists and performers with its vibrant community and growing artistic scene

Cairns offers a wide range of cultural events throughout the year, including festivals, theatrical productions, and live music that caters to everyone from art aficionados to those who love to dance all night long. In fact, Cairns is becoming known as the “arts capital” of northern Australia due to its thriving cultural life. We’re not just talking about traditional art forms like painting or sculpture—you can see everything from theatre performances and spoken word events, to leading First Nation’s art exhibitions or touring exhibitions at any given time.

There are so many ways to immerse yourself in this city’s cultural offerings. Enjoy an original play by an emerging playwright, see international and Australian bands under the stars, in a re-purposed WWII oil tank or a state-of-the-art theatre, and stroll through historic buildings housing art collections by local or touring artists.

SPACES FOR ARTISTS

Inspirational creative works are developed in inspiring and interesting working spaces. In Cairns, there are several ways to track down access to spaces. The Cairns Arts and Culture Map website lists both Cairns Regional Council and private spaces with listings ranging from galleries and halls to outdoor stages and arts centres. If you have a space for hire, create a free listing on the site.

Council offers affordable and accessible spaces for artists, community and cultural groups throughout the city for production, meetings, events and rehearsals. Spaces for hire include halls, meeting rooms, a theatre and galleries. Grants are also available to help cover hire costs and resources for eligible people and groups. Search online for ‘Cairns Council grants’.

ARTISTS AT WORK

CIRCA CAIRNS

The Tanks and Circa Cairns - inspired by connection to place, bound by history, and fuelled by the future.

As its reputation precedes, the Tanks Arts Centre has a long and fascinating past, a history full of cultural significance and historical importance. Conversely, Circa Cairns is a new, proudly First Nations-led contemporary circus ensemble dedicated to creating bold art from the nexus of place and culture. When the two meet with the intent of connecting culture and community, the fuel for great art is ignited.

A relic from World War 2, the heritage-listed Tanks Pump House is located at the front of the Tanks Arts Centre and was originally constructed during wartime to house an underground fuel pipeline and its pumps. Tanks 3 – 5, nestled away in the rainforest away from enemy eyes, held the crude oil that was stored to supply the Australian, American and British ships. These underground pumps moved fuel to and from the Cairns Wharves at Trinity Inlet, and are still in existence under north Cairns today. Since the Tanks decommissioning in 1987, the Tanks and the Pump House have been converted to a multi-use arts space; it is the home to many artists in residence at the Tanks Arts Centre.

Circa Cairns, an extension from the worldrenowned Brisbane-based Circa Contemporary Circus, is a bold new chapter in the company’s journey to explore ‘what is possible in circus?’. The creative lead behind Circa Cairns is Harley Mann, a proud Wakka Wakka man and outstanding new talent as a performer, arts maker, director and company leader. Harley is one of the first First Nations artists to graduate from the National Institute of Circus Arts. His leadership promises to create great art from the encounter of culture and place.

Having recently wrapped up their production

‘The Wet’, the Circa Cairns ensemble will pursue an ambitious program of their residency at the Tanks Pump House, as well as providing opportunities for emerging First Nations Artists and Far North Queensland residents to undertake training and skills development in the physical theatre space.

“Art comes from people and their stories. I’m fascinated by stories that don’t look the same, that don’t come from the same people and don’t come from the same places.”

TANKS ARTS CENTRE

Next time you come to Tanks Arts Centre, or perhaps just Edge Hill, take some time to immerse yourself in the wonder of Tank 4, Tanks Arts Centre’s gallery space. Your arts experience starts outside with public art peppered throughout the natural surroundings – Nickolai Globe’s depiction of the Creation has become a living canvas with his ceramic mural cloaked in strangler fig roots while two giant green ant sculptures hide amongst the gardens.

Wander through the galvanised steel gates inlaid with monstera leaves, created by Marc Steiner, and you’ll find yourself inside Tank 4. There’s no denying the charm of this multifunctional gallery space – grungy oil-stained walls, soft lighting and high ceilings provide the perfect atmosphere to browse art, with up to three exhibitions on at any given time.

Cairns Children’s Festival –Tinkering Tank: Dot Dot Do (Sun 21 May)

Paradise PalettePNG Contemporary Art exhibition

(Fri 26 May – Sun 18 Jun | Launch 6pm Fri 26 May) Plus, keep an eye out if any gigs include Tank 4 Up Late

Approximately 90% of the gallery’s program is locally-based, or a product of the Multi-Arts Residency program, which is designed to stimulate a creative response from artists to the environment of Tanks Arts Centre and surrounding area. Sometimes you might even find an artist at work inside Tank 4!

On select evenings, the space also transforms itself for Tank 4 Up Late where Tank 5 concert-goers are invited to meander down to Tank 4 to enjoy a local music act and check out the current exhibition – ‘til late.

One thing is guaranteed when you visit Tanks Arts Centre, you’ll come for one thing and discover so much more.

A Night to Remember

The recent performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre drew a massive crowd of 1,815 audience members. The play, written by William Shakespeare, was brought to life by the talented Queensland Ballet cast and crew who seamlessly blended comedy, romance, and magic to create a memorable experience for all in attendance.

The intricate set design and lighting brought the forest of Athens to life, and the audience was transported to a world of love triangles and mischievous fairies. The dancers’ performances were superb, with each character bringing a unique energy and charm to the stage.

Overall, the performance was a resounding success, leaving the audience enchanted and entertained. It was a reminder of the timeless appeal of Shakespeare’s work and the

Soul Rocker

Soul rocker: One who lives from the heart, with compassion for all, and possesses a tenacious enthusiasm for music, life and the planet. – Michael Franti

Michael Franti is not on tour; he’s on a mission. A revival to spread peace, love, healing, acceptance, inclusion, tolerance and hope. The often-barefoot artist and activist — along with his longstanding band, Spearhead— is about to bring his good vibrations back to the Tank 5 stage! And as an extra feel-good moment, he’ll be backing it up with a soul rocking Yoga Jam in the Munro Martin Parklands.

Like many evolving bands, Franti’s music has changed a lot over the years. The Public Enemy-style hip hop of The Disposable Heroes gave way to Spearhead’s acoustic jams vibe, soul and roots, but his activist streak remains, and his punk attitude has been replaced with positivity. The man exudes optimism, and his fans absorb it and throw that sunshine right back at the lanky, dreadlocked frontman.

Franti & Spearhead’s most recent album, Follow Your Heart, is a record filled to the brim with lessons and lyrical treasures held within uplifting songs such as ‘Good Day for a Good Day’ and ‘Brighter Day’.

“One thing I learned these last couple of years is that people need people,” shares Franti. “I wrote many songs about connection, resilience and finding the light, even in the midst of all the crazy. Somewhere in there we find resilience.”

“This album means so much to me. It’s my favourite album that we’ve ever done,” he adds. “It’s about how we get through this crazy time even when life feels overwhelming. When the issues of the world seem impossible to fix, and when your heart feels like it’s being ripped into pieces, lean into those you love for strength and support.”

Franti is not only an incredible musician and remarkable performer and poet, but a positively gorgeous human being who strongly connects with his audience with so much more than a performance, spreading his message of love and sunshine into each and every one of us. Stay human, everybody.

Black Sun/ Blood Moon

From writer and director Chris Bendall comes a fantastical new story about finding your voice and saving the world.

Two intertwining stories – one magical, the other all too real – bring two unlikely heroes to the stage in a new work inspired by the Fridays for Future student-led protests of 2019. Black Sun / Blood Moon follows Maddy, a ten-year-old climate champion, and Katie, the underachieving assistant of a climate-denying politician, as they set out to save the planet.

When Maddy’s father, Paul, inspires his young daughter to take part in a school climate strike, their lives are turned upside down irrevocably. Maddy’s journey puts her at increasing risk as she takes her message to the powers that be, while Katie finds herself on the back of eagles and dolphins as she attempts to fulfill a quest from the future.

The Island of Dr Moreau

Tracks

Talking Pictures invites you to explore the history and power of the moving image. Fiona Sewell, former journalist and die-hard movie buff, will moderate a lively discussion with special guests from the film before a feature length screening.

Tracks is the true story of a young woman, Robyn Davidson, who in 1977 decided to embark on a 2,700 kilometre trek from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, crossing the harsh Australian outback. Accompanied only by her dog and four camels, Davidson had no other purpose than to reach the ocean and find herself on journey of self-discovery.

Special guest, Matthew Bligh, founder of Millstream Productions, worked as the Video Split Operator on Tracks traversing a wild desert terrain and capturing stunning footage along the way that augments this extraordinary tale.

Talking Pictures is your backstage pass to find out what really happened on the sets of films.

Die-hard movie fan, Fiona Sewell, is catching up with North Queensland locals who had the opportunity to work on the set of movies for a chat prior to a feature-length screening of each film. So far we’ve talked all things action with Lawrence Woodward, who was stunt coordinator on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road… and what an eye-opener that was!

Coming up in April, we’ve got the film that was wrought with challenge after challenge – it’s The Island of Dr Moreau which was filmed right here in North Queensland. Renowned local musician, artist and entertainer, David Hudson, played Bison Man in the film and forged a friendship with Hollywood star, Marlon Brando. We have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of goss divulged on this one, so if you like your popcorn served with a little spice, don’t miss out!

In May, we’ll be traversing the desert with Matthew Blyth, a local film-maker who shot some of the stunning footage in the film, Tracks. TAKING TIME - MEG MAC -

There’s few smaller yet potent joys in life than stumbling across new music. It might be a particular catchy hook, a riff that makes you dream a little sweeter, or a specific lyric that really speaks to you. Sometimes those lyrics can hit you hard in the feels (cue, any Adele song ever), or maybe it’s a catchy few lines you cannot help but have on loop in your head (Robert Plant and Alison Krause, anyone?). But when you discover a song or an album that does both?

Most people discovered Meg Mac when her single ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ was played on the then hit HBO showof-the-moment, ‘Girls’. It provided an anthemic feel with a rousing keyboard intro, some powerhouse vocals, and a seriously singable hook (‘Everything’s gonna be alright!’), and has racked up over 32 million plays on Spotify. Since then, Meg’s trajectory has been only upwards –she was nominated for Best Female Artist and Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2015 ARIA Awards; her second album peaked at #2 on the ARIA charts; and now her new, third studio album Matter Of Time has dominated the #1 spot. It’s almost like the album title was prophetic.

“I think the best way to explain it would be that I wasn’t in a good place when I was making it and so I think you can hear that,” she explains. “I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise”.

In that NSW cottage, things eventually came together for Meg. Upon release, Matter of Time was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 J Awards, and it was hailed as a ‘grand statement’ in Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s review. The album was preceded by EP and ‘Live At Golden Retriever’ the sessions captured unique live versions of the first few singles, capturing Meg’s voice at its potent best.

Meg’s live shows are no exception, with recent reviews from her triumphant return to the stage earlier this year with sold out shows at Sydney Opera House and The Forum in Melbourne on the ‘On Your Mind’ tour. Claiming the Tank 5 stage as her own on May 20, this will be a performance that will remind us why she’s one of Australia’s most dynamic vocalists

MATTER OF TIME TOUR

“I wanted to just start again and do everything without compromise,” states Meg Mac of the game-changing personal switch-up that led to Matter of Time: the singer’s highly anticipated third album and record that builds on Mac’s award-winning foundations and sends them to new places of clarity and ambition. With standout singles Is It Worth Being Sad, Only Love and Understand, Matter of Time has already been praised as “her most compelling body of work yet” and “a grand statement” by Rolling Stone.

Meg’s live show is no exception, with recent reviews from her triumphant return to the stage earlier this year with sold out shows at Sydney Opera House and The Forum in Melbourne on the On Your Mind tour.

The Last Collection

Saving the future, one story at a time.

Today a staggering number of books are being digitised, and much of what used to be in print can now be found online. But could books ever really become extinct? What would that take? What would that world look like? And who would be responsible?

Inspired by The Story Bank, home of PL Travers (Mary Poppins), and works of the Brothers Grimm, The Last Collection is an intimate, interactive narrative experience for children and young people aged 6-14 years that explores themes of the fast-paced digital world, sacred storytelling and future thinking.

The Last Collection is a funny, heartfelt, and playful immersive theatre experience, artfully crafted to leave its audience with a renewed passion for problem-solving and a greater awareness of what they can accomplish in the world.

Cleo & Tony

SHAKESPEARE AT THE TANKS

Cleo & Tony is a 1930’s noir inspired rendition of the classic Shakespearean tragedy Antony and Cleopatra - an epic tale between two lovers from opposite sides of the track, caught between duty and desire on a razor’s edge.

In Tropical Arts’ 14th Annual Shakespeare at the Tanks production, ancient decadence and power are re-imagined in the depression era with gangsters and glamour. Fusing music and dance with theatre, Cleo & Tony harness a large cast.

In partnership with ARC Disability Services and Tanks Arts Centre, Tropical Arts is an inclusive community theatre that presents a refreshing theatre experience celebrating diversity.

Dracula’s THE RESURRECTION TOUR

After a sold-out season in 2022, Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour is coming to Cairns!

Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour leaps like a feathered zombie show girl from the crypt! With some of the best acts from the Dracula’s vault, splashed in blood and covered in glitter, The Resurrection Tour smashes years of Dracula’s brand of punchy variety into one blood-buster show, delivering live rock music, sultry burlesque, jaw to the floor costumes and razor-edged comedy.

Dracula’s was born in a dark, dingy Melbourne laneway in 1980, and four decades later has sold over five million tickets, embracing a cult following that spans generations. Strictly limited season – tickets will sell out, so get in quick!

EXHIBITION EXHIBITION

Receive> Respond 2023

The Receive>Respond arts challenge and culminating exhibition provide an opportunity for artists aged 15 to 25 in the Cairns region to share their passion for art and collaboration.

The challenge is simple. This year’s selector, NorthSite Acting Director, Hamish Sawyer, receives all submissions and selects approximately 30 to participate. He then pairs up the artists like a “Secret Santa”. Each artist receives their paired artwork and then creates a new artwork that responds in some way to that image. The resulting exhibition places the paired works together and gives the artists the chance to meet each other and discuss their responses. This challenge highlights the talent and diversity of creative expression here in our own backyard.

Paradise Road

Talking Pictures invites you to explore the history and power of the moving image. Fiona Sewell, former journalist and die-hard movie buff, will moderate a lively discussion with special guests from the film before a feature length screening.

Paradise Road follows the lives of a group of women who are imprisoned on the island of Sumatra by the Japanese during World War II, and who use music to relieve their misery.

Mostly shot in Port Douglas using local cast and crew, Paradise Road was directed by Bruce Beresford and starred Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. Viewers also witness the rising star quality in Cate Blanchett, in one of here earlier roles.

Sarah Speller, a local actor, presenter and award-winning make-up artist worked on hair and make-up on the set of this incredible historical drama. Sarah joins Fiona Sewell in a conversation that takes us through what the day entails when you’re a make-up artist working on a feature film.
