FROM PRESIDENT GREGG BICHÉ Thank you to each and every one of you for placing your confidence in me to lead this great association in 2020. The participation of Capital Region Builders and Remodelers Association’s (CRBRA) many members are what keep us going strong, and over the next 12 months we will expand the opportunities for members to become involved. Our members continue to develop new ideas to keep our networking events fresh like Trivia Night that was organized by PWB and FIL earlier in January. This was a huge success and we saw many new faces. And there are more exciting new events to come including FIL’s axe throwing event in April as well as a smash session and costume contest this coming fall that sounds like a great way to blow off some steam. Our goals for the coming year align directly with our strategic plan, which has been lead by Greg Galla of Teal Becker and Chiaramonte, CPAs. It is important for CRBRA to increase our member base of builders and remodelers. As I stated at our installation ceremony, we all know someone that depends on building and remodeling to make a living, yet they are not yet members of CRBRA. As members we need to share our message and demonstrate all that the CRBRA does to help promote and protect our industry. We need to communicate our Value Proposition (see left.) We want to make sure all members, new and longstanding, understand that we have an event or committee that will meet their needs and help them to achieve their own goals. If you’re aren’t currently involved with an event or committee please contact us and we will walk you through the many options we have, including:

Community Involvement, Golf, and Best in Building.
We know that there are so many demands for our time and not everyone has the resources to make large commitments. Because of this, we offer micro-volunteer opportunities. These are a great way to become involved and meet leading industry professionals. Our Community Involvement Committee has made great strides this year by helping individuals and organizations that could use a hand from a talented and compassionate group of people like our members. Paul Pipino of Pipino Builders chairs this committee. He would love to hear about new ideas for a Spring or Fall 2020 project, and he is always looking for members to volunteer and become more involved. These activities are not only an opportunity to help in our communities, they also increase awareness of CRBRA and the great things we can do.

Our annual Lobby Day at the New York State Capitol is coming up in May. If you have not attended in the past, this is a great way help CRBRA and the New York State Builders Association (NYSBA) speak with a clear and united voice on the topics that affect us all. Our Lobby Day begins with a morning meeting to provide an update on bills we would like to see enacted and legislation that would affect our industry. Whether you choose to speak or to stand with us for support, our strength in numbers can go a long way. Our day is capped off with a cocktail reception with other local and state members, and provides an opportunity to talk with our State Senators and Assemblymembers. I have loved this industry ever since I was a child, so I feel a great privilege to serve as president of CRBRA. I will do my best to serve in this role in a manner that will represent and promote all of our members. Thank you for the trust you have instilled in me, and for your continued involvement and dedication to this great association. I look forward to connecting with you at many of our events this year.

Hello everyone! 2020 is off a great start here at CRBRA! We have an exciting year planned and have already hosted two fantastic events – Trivia Night and our 2020 Installation Celebration. Congratulations to President Gregg Biché, the Executive Board and Directors! Your fellow members have bestowed an honor on you to represent them and this industry. I trust that you will make them all proud to have chosen you. At January’s International Builders Show in Las Vegas, there was an ongoing conversation at many sessions about the labor shortage. This is a nationwide challenge and one we’re seeing here in the Capital Region. We hear on a regular basis the struggle our members are facing to fill the open positions in their companies. To help address this issue, CRBRA is proud to partner with the New York State Builders Association Research & Education Foundation (NYSBA REF) to sponsor the William Morehouse Scholarship. Its purpose is to assist students in their pursuit of a career in residential construction and to provide employers in New York State with a strong, industry-qualified workforce.

I
t’s a new year, not to mention a new decade, and the perfect time to shake up the home design landscape. CRBRA’s Residential Building magazine spoke with local experts on what consumers can expect from the building and remodeling world in 2020.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association predicts that this year an estimated 63 million households in North America will have smart home systems - that’s nearly 50 percent of all homes. “There is so much more to home technology than Alexa or Nest thermostats,” said Frank Barbera, president at Barbera Homes. Having attended the Tech Home Builder Summit last year, he said automated controls for temperature, security, and lighting are popular, and with many single platform solutions it is easier and more affordable than ever to integrate into new homes. And while connected appliances can make your life easier by learning your preferences and habits, they also need to blend cohesively
with the rest of the kitchen. Known by many as “the heart of the home,” kitchens are seeing a lot of attention this year, as you might expect. Barbera is thankful that the trend of removing the microwave from over the range and replacing it with stainless steel hoods is continuing in 2020. He said he also foresees kitchen islands will continue to get larger, white cabinets and Quartz countertops will hold their popularity, and that customers will want full-wall tile backsplashes. “Now that kitchens are focal points of open concept designs, it makes sense to tie the entire space together with an impressive full wall backsplash,” he said.
Erika Gallagher of Plum & Crimson Fine Interior Design agreed with Barbera on the decorative hood trend rising, especially metal hoods, and added that she’s seeing an influx of high-end vintage stoves and appliances with more bells and whistles. In addition to popular white kitchens, she said she’s starting to see clients wanting something new and different. Cabinets painted colors such as blue, different shades of green, and gray, and light wood cabinets or woods with a lot of character like walnut, alder, and chestnut are a few examples. “I love that more homeowners are introducing color into the kitchen space,” said Jen Duttine, decorator at Colorize Inc. “Adding a pop of color on the island has become very popular and I think that will continue into the near future.” Barbera said another sign of the times in 2020 will be the disappearance of the dining room. “It makes sense that with the advent of the open concept plan and changing lifestyles, the dining room would be the next conventional paradigm to fall out of favor.” The indoor/outdoor connection will become more important and it is a natural extension of the open concept design, he said. “Imagine large sliding glass doors with natural light pouring in, offering a seamless transition to outdoor kitchens, a beautiful patio space, or your swimming pool.”

Still reigning supreme, open floor plans allow for brighter spaces that are easier for socialization and a variety of furniture size options. However, Barbera said there are some trade-offs, which is why new designs are incorporating small, personal spaces or “sanctuaries” so that homeowners can still enjoy some privacy including smaller offices, sitting rooms and spa showers, along with the triumphant return of bathtubs. “The free-standing tub is very popular right now, and for two reasons: their modern look and promise of peaceful solitude,” said Barbera. In addition to tranquil, free-standing tubs, Barbera is looking forward to the release of Schluter®-Systems brushed stainless steel shower shelves, which he said offers a sleek alternative to traditional porcelain and expensive recessed niches. He said 2020 bathrooms will also feature more furniture cabinets and master showers will have more curbless entries, built-in seats, and oversized frameless glass doors. Gallagher predicts bathrooms will feature more brushed gold faucets and lighting, built-in televisions, and framed mirrors versus simple plate glass. Counters in natural stone or solid surface and steam showers will also remain top choices, along with an old standby. “Subway shaped tiles are still hot and they are coming out in many, many variations that keep the trend going,” she said. Not just white anymore, Gallagher said there are beautiful hand glazed tiles that come in every color of the rainbow, and ones made from natural stone that incorporate some mosaic. Printed subway tile is also a beautiful twist on the look.
are making a comeback. “We have seen a lot of clients wanting a warm, clean palette that they can do a lot with, especially those who like to change pictures, pillows, and move furniture.” Undecided on which direction to go with? Duttine said she considers a few things when starting from scratch with color inspiration. Room orientation, lighting, flooring color and furnishing ideas all come into play when deciding on a great color scheme. “Trying different colors on poster board and moving it around the room to get different viewpoints of how it will look can help in the decision making process,” she said.

In favor of a brighter, edgier interior vibe in 2020 over more earthy tones and natural materials? Gallagher said wallpaper and wall murals are not only on a huge incline, but offer a lot of “wow” to a space without having to redo the other elements or furnishings of a room. “There are so many cool choices from bold graphic prints to big, beautiful colorful florals.” Other ideas like updating lamps, art, decorative pillows and accessories always make a space more vibrant as well. These items can be more trendy because they can be switched out easily. When it comes to paint in 2020, Duttine said a lot of the top colors would work well in any space, but especially those with lots of windows and natural lighting. Soft, rosy hues, greens, golden straw, and blues make the most popular lists as well as different shades of white. Gallagher said she’s particularly excited to see the color green come back onto the scene in 2020. “It was so hard to find in fabrics and finishes [before], and it works so well in our area.” She said blue is still really popular and classic at the same time, and that people are starting to look for other options outside of gray, a shift she’s also happy to see. Duttine said over the last few years they’ve had a huge push of grays being used throughout projects, but in 2020 the trend of more neutral warm and inviting colors

Barbera said the building industry has been making great progress with eco-friendly designs, and that all of their homes are Energy Star rated. “We use energy reducing building products and construction techniques to improve the comfort of the home and reduce its carbon footprint.” He said this includes insulation, air sealing, and high efficiency products for furnaces, windows, appliances, and hot water heaters, in addition to programmable thermostats and bath fans. But environmentally conscious designs won’t just end there in 2020 according to Barbera, as this trend will also include popular “tiny homes” as well as Passive Houses (designed to be extremely energy-efficient so that they don’t take a lot of power to heat or cool), LEED Certified Green Homes, and panelized construction that maximizes materials and reduces job site waste. With home wellness on the rise, non-toxic materials are a big selling point for millennial homeowners. Gallagher said she’s had clients asking for products with low VOC in their paint and floor finishes, as well as asking for LED lighting. So if you want to make a statement with your home this year, try incorporating some of these ideas into your building or remodeling project.
