Message from the Headmaster

It was an iconic weekend of sport with England winning the Women’s Rugby World Cup and Europe winning the Ryder Cup. Similarly, in sport this week, our Cranmore pupils have shown remarkable skill, dedication, teamwork and resilience on the playing fields, the ski slopes, and in the swimming pool. There were notable victories against St John’s and Gordon’s in rugby; qualification for the National Finals in both football and skiing; and new personal best times set at the English Schools Swimming Competition. Our golfers also qualified for the next round of the ISGA Cup with a convincing victory over Reed’s.

At the end of last week, the Year 11 Geography cohort had a successful trip to East London as part of their urban fieldwork studies. On Wednesday, during our assembly we learnt more about the efforts of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee and how pupils can apply to be ambassadors for the forthcoming year. Towards the end of the week, a group of Year 9 pupils enjoyed the opportunity to join some of their peers from St Teresa’s as they visited Arundel Cathedral, joining in Mass.

Year 11 Geography Trip

On Friday 26th September, forty-four Year 11 Geography students travelled by train to Stratford, East London, to conduct their human geography fieldwork. The trip focused on two contrasting areas: the regenerated East Village in the Olympic Park, developed for the 2012 London Olympics, and the nearby Carpenter’s Estate, which has not experienced the same investment or regeneration.

Students worked diligently to collect primary data, using environmental quality indexes and field sketches to compare the sustainability of development in both locations. They engaged enthusiastically with each task, demonstrating maturity and curiosity about the issues explored.

Since returning, students have presented and analysed their findings as part of their preparation for the Paper 3 exam. Their positive attitude and commitment throughout the visit made them excellent ambassadors for the school.

Pilgrimage of Hope to Arundel Cathedral

On Thursday 2nd October, on the Feast of the Guardian Angels, pupils from across the Effingham Schools Trust took part in a Pilgrimage of Hope to Arundel Cathedral.

The day included a walk in Arundel park, a Mass celebrated by Bishop Richard in the Cathedral and ice creams by the river. It was a joyful day!

St Francis, whose Feast Day is on Saturday, reminds us that God is to be found in the present and in Creation. When we walk and when we slow down, we are reminded that the world really is beautiful and full of hope.

Mr Jakubowski

Question: What is the shape of a Pringle?

Answer: A hyperbolic paraboloid restricted within the domain of a circle, of course!

In the 1950s, a chemist, commissioned by Proctor and Gamble, spent years coming up with the shape of a Pringle. The saddle shape of a Pringle not only stacks well but is structurally strong; perfect for storing in tubes.

In Maths Club, our pupils helped graph the shape of a pringle using 3D graphing software. They discovered firsthand how strong a Pringle is by creating 'Pringle Ringles'.

Bizarrely, all the Pringles had mysteriously vanished by the end of the session....!

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A reading from St Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Reflection

This week we focus on two major celebrations: the Feast Day of St Teresa of Lisieux and being a Pilgrim of Hope. St Teresa teaches us that it is through our small acts of love that we can find the risen Christ. In an increasingly complex and pressurised world, this week we had a timely reminder that God is found in the simple things. We also took pupils on a Secondary Pilgrimage to Arundel. In this Year of Jubilee, the Church invites us to travel closer to God and become pilgrims of Hope.

Prayer

Father in Heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.

Amen

“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.”
