Message from the Headmaster

It has been a remarkable week in the Senior School, filled with energy, challenge and accomplishment. Our Year 7 pupils began the week with great enthusiasm at the Calshot Activity Centre, where teamwork, courage, resilience and camaraderie were very much in evidence.

At the top of our Senior School, Year 11 pupils had opportunity to showcase their ability and enthusiasm during the Sixth Form Scholarship assessments in Academics, Music, Art, Drama and Sport. The standard of talent and commitment displayed throughout the week was outstanding. Congratulations to our Year 9 pupils who participated in the EST Public Speaking Competition at St Teresa’s. Their eloquence and confidence were commendable. The Elevate Study Skills workshops for Years 8, 9 and 11 helped equip pupils with valuable strategies for learning and revision.

We were also privileged to host the African Caribbean Education Network, who led powerful sessions on racial equality movements in the UK. These thought-provoking discussions encouraged awareness, understanding and empathy among our pupils and staff. Finally, thank you to our Cranmore community for the donations of Harvest gifts which will benefit those needing support in our wider community through LeatherHEAD START and Dorking Foodbank.

Mr Everitt

Year 7 Calshot Residential

Our Year 7 pupils had an action packed and enjoyable two days at Calshot Activity Centre in Southampton. The pupils engaged in a variety of activities, including kayaking, climbing, problem-solving and riding down a large indoor ski slope on inflatable rings!

It was an ideal time for our pupils to participate in activities together at the start of their Senior School journey. We hope that they will have formed friendships and memories that will last far beyond their time at Cranmore.

Mr Savvides, Head of Year 7

‘This House believes that books are obsolete’ was the provocative motion debated by Cranmore’s Year 9 team at Tuesday’s Public Speaking Competition hosted by St Teresa The event which took place in the library of St Teresa’s saw five teams from Manor House, Cranmore and St Teresa’s competing against each other.

Year 11 ‘Ace Your Exams’ with Elevate Education

On Monday, Year 11 took part in a very helpful exam preparation session entitled ‘Ace your Exams’. The session was the fifth in a series, which follows:

• Study Skills in Year 7

• Time Management in Year 8

• Memory Mnemonics in Year 9

• Study Sensei in Year 10

Pupils considered the seven steps for preparation excellence, which included creating a detailed timeline and structure for attempting and reviewing past papers. Strategies were explored for identifying and avoiding common mistakes as well as exam-hall technique and practices to remain calm. Researching exam-board specifications and examiner reports was also identified as a useful strategy.

Feedback from pupils was very positive: 98% would recommend the content to other students

Further student feedback included:

• “I learned I need to do at least 4 practice papers per subject

• “Very good”

• “10/10”

• “The importance of making a schedule”

• “Good tips on how to stay calm in the exam”

The Senior Art Club students created works of art to celebrate bees or bee-keeping for the local 'Bee and Honey show' at Stoke Park in Guildford last weekend. I am very pleased to tell you that all the Cranmore artworks took first to third place in the individual category with a special award for Max H and Alex B's honeycomb palace (pictured).

Their entry can be re-entered into the 'National Bee Show' in Esher during the half -term break; to which both boys have also gained free entry as part of their prize. I was especially impressed with the independence shown from all the students and the creative ideas they all expressed. Well done also to Jake C (first place), Louis C and William A (second), and Jonathan Ward (third and a highly commended) .

Mrs Sanders

Congratulations to our U13 7th XI who had a very successful day at the Danes Hill 'Development Teams Cup.' Cranmore won 4 and drew 1 from the 6 matches they played. The team only conceded one goal. Although there was no official overall winner, Cranmore were certainly one of the top performing teams. Well done to Willsby B (Year 7) with being nominated Cranmore's Player of the Tournament.

Cranmore had great representation at the English Schools Cross-Country Qualifiers. Congratulations to Year 11 pupil Theo L who came first in his age group.

Year 11 pupil Ollie McB received his awards for coming net first at the ISGA (Golf) Regionals last month. He was presented with a polo shirts and glass trophy by our Headmaster in Friday's assembly.

Cranmore's impressive run continues regarding our other 6 U13 football teams. Broomwood, from Wandsworth, were our opponents on Wednesday and Cranmore went undefeated.

The U14 A and B rugby teams played two more schools this week: Richard Challoner and St Paul's. The four performances were excellent and Cranmore's great season continues.

The U16 rugby team had a beneficial match against Glyn on Wednesday. Despite currently having a few injuries in the squad, the match proved worthy preparation for the next round of the National Cup next week against Epsom College.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A reading from the Gospel of Matthew

Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.

Reflection

No sooner than we finish celebrating the feast of St Therese, we immediately celebrate the feast of one of the most popular saints, St Francis. The life of St Francis is rich with significance for today. He lived a life of extreme poverty, forsaking all other earthly possessions, despite coming from a wealthy family. He is a model for us of a saintly life, one dedicated to becoming the person God calls us to be. He is perhaps best remembered by us today because of his great Canticle of Creation, where he recognises our closeness to the beauty of creation, God’s most abundant gift to us all. St Francis was a man with eyes that were open. He loved God not in the abstract but in the present moment, in each person, animal and flower that he encountered.

Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is error, the truth; where there is doubt, the faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

Amen.

"Sanctify yourself and you will sanctify society." ~ St Francis of Assisi
