OUR HERITAGE ----------------------------------

O

UR firm’s founders, Ralph Adams Cram (1863-1942) and Bertram Goodhue (18691924), developed American religious architecture to a high art. Their buildings and interiors continue to be celebrated for their quality and integrity. This rich tradition continues today in the contemporary work of Cram and Ferguson Architects, LLC. Our team uses the firm’s historic assets—an archive of drawings, photographs and details from hundreds of churches and academic buildings —to shape and inform our current projects.

Traditional aesthetics are combined with current technology to craft timeless, beautiful, durable and functional houses of worship.

Careful study of our resources and research into historic structures and monuments across Europe assure our work today is imbued with harmonious proportions and an authentic feel.

These methods have allowed us at Cram and Ferguson to revive methods and details that have seemed lost to history until now.

OUR PROCESS ----------------------------------

C

RAM and Ferguson have been developing and refining our successful method of church building for more than a century: PROGRAMMING: Our clients often come to us with a wish list, a problem list, or both. Our first task is to guide discussion of these with the stakeholders and stewards of the community.

Working together, we review the owner’s desires for the proposed building or the structure to be renovated, and identify the problems and opportunities to be addressed. This culminates in a space list detailing the specific requirements for each part of the project. Spaces are quantified by area, requested qualities and adjacencies.

DESIGN: Working with the owner team, plan diagrams are prepared that identify desirable qualities for each space and an early schematic design is developed. Finally, the likely cost of construction is estimated by the cost consultant. At this point, a construction method is selected.

FUNDING: Using the approved initial designs, we develop eye-catching renderings to assist in the church’s Capital Campaign effort. These often speed up the donation process considerably.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION: Following completion of the Capital Campaign, construction drawings are prepared for distribution to the contractor for pricing. The contractor may be retained to provide construction cost estimating throughout document preparation.

COST ESTIMATING OR BIDDING: Following completion of the Contract Documents, the final estimating and bidding is completed and a Project Budget is set.

CONSTRUCTION: The project proceeds to permitting, construction, and completion, and the community rejoices in its new sacred space.

LIENTS come to us seeking unique solutions to the opportunities they present. Our portfolio has included everything from simply designing a new altar to complement a historic church interior to designing entire seminaries, monasteries andparish churches from the ground up. As populations shift, new church communities appear in unexpected places. A long-established parish may outgrow its original home, perhaos replacing an outdated concrete box built according to the fashions of half-a-century ago. Our new construction projects seek to bring the feeling of authenticity, of timeless beauty, and the ability to preach, teach and worship through brick, stone, and wood, to something built in the twenty-first century, blending old and new methods, addressing transcendent and quotidian realities, and suited to its parishioners and locale, whether in the rolling plains of Oklahoma or a Boston waterfront. Whatever the solution, it will be rooted in the past and ready for the future.

RENOVATION, RESTORATION, AND RE-BEAUTIFICATION ADDTIONS, INTERIORS AND PRESERVATION

S believers of many churches reassess the aesthetic choices of the recent past, the old maxim of lex orandi, lex credendi—the law of prayer is the law of belief—often comes up. The way we pray inevitably shapes the way we believe. One could also say lex aedificandi, lex orandi, lex credendi—the way we build shapes the way we pray, and the way we believe. We are often asked by parishes to make their existing church look like a church. This means revisiting the basic floorplan: does it enhance or hinder worship? How does it compare with traditional or specific denominational precedents? Are visibility or accoustics an issue?

It may mean modifying the interior or exterior architecture—giving it an upward sweep, enhancing the sanctuary with color, high-quality materials and iconography, adding a spire or new front, or, in the case of an “un-wreckovation,” restoring lost beauty.

But most critical is a vision that addresses each concern as part of a greater whole.

CRAFTING THE CHURCH A PL ACE WORTHY FOR THE LITURGY

T our founding in 1889, Cram and Ferguson was guided by the Arts and Crafts movement, which advocated incorporating hand-made traditional workmanship into buildings and interiors.

Collaborating closely with painters, woodworkers, stonemasons, and metalsmiths remains critical to our method. Cram and Ferguson Architects maintains long-standing exclusive relationships with a distinguished group of craft workers to carry out our vision for not only the art and decorative stonework of the church, but the furnishings at the heart of the sanctuary itself. Crafting by hand gives honesty to these elements dedicated to God’s glory.

ALTARS, ALTARPIECES, AMBOS, AND OTHER LITURGICAL FURNISHINGS: If the church building is a lantern, the sanctuary or chancel is its flame. Here, the work of liturgical design, iconography, and craft come together.

We dialogue with the client to create a symbolic program of artwork and sculpture to dignify altar, ambo, tabernacle shrine or altarpiece, altar rail, altar crucifix, and the tabernacle itself. In stone or wood, these incorporate universal iconography and elements unique to each community.

In one of our recent projects, an upstate Carolina parish’s reredos, we find the star of the Epiphany flanked by mourning doves—local relatives of the turtledoves of the Presentation—as well as Appalachian equivalents to medieval flower symbolism among the woodwork. The whole encloses a masterful depiction in oils of the Adoration of the Magi in a composition we helped develop, a fitting subject for a church named for the Incarnation.

TABERNACLES, ALTAR CROSSES AND OTHER ECCLESIA STICAL METALWORK: On our handwrought tabernacles, created from our drawings by metalsmiths we have worked with for decades, one may glimpse hammered relief pelicans and colorful semiprecious stones representing the foundations 11

of the Heavenly Jerusalem. Or, on an altar cross, we find in gleaming cast silver, Resurrection lilies alongside cast apple blossoms—O felix culpa! Other metalwork items we have developed for our clients include blacksmithed hinges and door hardware designed to complement exterior architecture, ironwork gates and cast bronze candle brackets.

ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORK, PANELING AND STONEWORK, beyond altars and altarpieces, are crucial to creating the atmosphere of a traditional interior. The highest-quality carving and materials focus attention on the sanctuary proper. Wood wainscots embellished with St. Peter’s keys or St. Andrew’s cross, choir stalls and benches with carved musician angels and decorative pew end finials, ceiling brackets depicting biblical elements such as the lions overcome by Daniel, convey meaning and add drama to functional elements. Marble sanctuary flooring, durable and beautiful, can also convey symbolism in color and pattern. Mosaics catch the eye, and stone wall panels serve as striking backdrops to altars and ambos.

COMMISSIONED PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE: Cram and Ferguson brings a wide knowledge of religious art, using our network of select traditional painters to create altarpieces and murals. Recently, we developed an extensive mural program inspired by the Book of Revelation for a church named for St. John the Evangelist. Our three most recent altarpieces have featured original paintings from studio artists in Europe and the United States, working from concepts and compositions we developed with them and the client. Our projects often feature custom-designed sculpture such as hanging rood crucifixes, eagle lecterns and carved altar reliefs.

DECORATIVE PAINTING AND STENCILING lifts the wall, arch, apse and beam to greater heights of beauty and meaning. By emphasizing the most important parts of the interior through color and ornament, the building itself expresses sacramental realities. Starry ceilings bring heaven to earth. Calligraphic wall inscriptions pro-

claim Scriptural texts. Even borders and patterns can depict sacred symbols. Our designs, as with commissioned art, are carried out by expert decorative ecclesiastical painters known to us from recent past projects.

SANCTUARY AND NAVE SEATING: Utilizing our exclusive overseas woodwork sources, we have designed celebrant and server seating, stalls, and credence tables to complement our interiors. We also design the pew seating plan, prioritizing clear sight lines, accessibility and safety.

In our CONFESSIONALS, we prioritize security, privacy and safety for both priest and penitent.

GL AZING: Our typical church window is set up so stained glass can be added in the future. Many times we have designed new stained glass or adapted existing antique windows. One recent project used clear leaded lancets as a cost-conscious alternative to full stained glass.

LIGHTING is vitally important within a sacred space. Cram and Ferguson specializes in designing lighting systems with unique settings for varying times of day, seasons, and different liturgies from Morning Prayer to Tenebrae.

ACOUSTICS, AUDIOVISUAL AND ORGANS: Traditional interiors are inherently beneficial for congregational song. We work with acousticians and audiovisual consultants to bring out these qualities, and to ensure that audio systems for preaching and reading and video for streaming are appropriate to the space and fully up-to-date.

Nearly all of our projects incorporate an organ, and we coordinate closely with the manufacturer throughout the design process.

Lastly, we see the SACRISTY AND VESTRY as places both for prayer and practical preparation.

Durable but beautiful countertops and stone flooring are prominent, as are custom-designed storage and an innovative incense station.

NE of Cram and Ferguson Architects most unique assets is how, over the past thirty years, we have developed contemporary design processes and delivery methods that give you authentic traditional design on a budget. What we do and how we do it is different from other architectural firms, and is the fruit of continual refinement and updating. Unlike other firms with wider practices, we are specialists in religious architecture. Building a new church or renovating a sacred space can be exciting but stressful for the pastor, principal, or committee member undertaking it for the first time. You need not fear— we have been here before many times, and our successful results are literally carved in stone.

EXPERIENCE BRINGS SAVINGS: We are able to complete our projects at a savings of approximately 25-30% below the cost of competing firms because of our extensive background delivering religious architectural projects across the country. Every project is unique, but we make use of our previous experience in creating a tailored result for you. As we concentrate wholly on sacred architecture, we bring to our projects a specialty knowledge base that other firms with a broader focus do not possess.

FORESIGHT: Our initial design process includes working with you to explore and develop design solutions that, from previous experience, will avoid fabrication and construction problems further down the road. This notably aids in our careful stewardship of your funds.

UNIQUE RESOURCES ON A BUDGET: Quality is a significant concern when purchasing fine custom furnishings and other crafted elements.

We are an advocate for our clients when buying from our craft workers, affording considerable savings via direct purchasing by the owner. A critical element in our success is access to exclusive material and fabrication resources from our 16

partners in ecclesiastical fabrication work. When working with more mainstream church supply companies or “one-stop shops” for fabricating marble, woodwork and other specialty items, what may appear to be cost savings on design or construction is usually counterbalanced by heavy industry markups on products.

Due to our long-standing relationships with talented stonemasons in Italy and Spain and exceptional hand woodworkers in Latin America working exclusively with us, you receive world-class craftsmanship and pricing unmatched by US suppliers. Our woodworkers produce handmade carvings that outstrip domestic robotic work in beauty and budget. We have proven repeatedly that purchasing woodwork produced by our exclusive sources saves around 50% in cost compared to machine-made equivalents.

PROCUREMENT: Arranging for purchase and shipping of specialty items may seem of secondary importance, but navigating this process and monitoring its progress—ship to shore, truck to site—is a highly specialized skill unique to Cram and Ferguson, and is critical to our relationship with craftsmen and suppliers. It is only available through Cram and Ferguson, and is critical to the success of our projects.

The same is true of CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION, in order for us to engage in quality control and assure the finished result follows the required design intent. Here, Cram and Ferguson educates and guides contractors through the process of installing specialty stone- and woodwork.

---------------------------------New 380-seat Church and Student Center Completed 2023

OME to OSU-Stillwater’s thriving Newman Center, St. John’s found it had outgrown its tiny 1960s-vintage facility, located on a prime site virtually in the shadow of Boone Pickens Stadium. Cram and Ferguson conducted extensive programming exercises to define the center’s needs and fit them to the available lot.

This included study rooms, a large dining hall

of Sant’ Ambrogio in Milan and San Clemente in Rome. Within the chapel, long lines of Romanesque arches lead to the altar, its Carrara white stone contrasting sharply against the sanctuary’s richly-colored bookmatched Fior di Pesco marble panels. Above is a mural inspired by San Clemente’s mosaic of the Crucifixion surrounded by the Vine and Branches, an allegory of the Apostles spreading out from Christ to the whole world. Over the sanctuary arch are images of twenty-four saints gathered around the heavenly throne. This decorative cycle was the result of an extensive collaboration between the client, who characterized the overall vision, Cram and Ferguson, who developed out the design, and the liturgical painters who carried out the work.

The new center was officially opened and the chapel dedicated in April 2023.

and commercial kitchen for student dinners and other social events, spaces for lectures, a lounge and smaller kitchen area with patio for special events dubbed “The Coop,” and a chapel seating 380 intended as a showpiece for sharing the Catholic faith through the beauty of traditional Catholic art and craftsmanship. The resulting structure communicates grace, dignity, and permanence.

Intended to complement the material palette of the campus’s red-brick American Colonial architecture while transcending it, the new structure is inspired by the far more ancient churches

ST. TIMOTHY ’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA

---------------------------------Interior Redesign, Furnishing Design, Renovations, New Choir loft, and Chapel Addition Completed 2021

S

T. Timothy’s is known for its charitable activities and beautiful liturgy. However, its traditional worship clashed with its church’s stark modern interior. Cram and Ferguson worked with rector Fr. Steven C. Rice and members of the parish vestry to create a transcendent vision for their sacred space. Commissioning a master plan and presentation renderings showcasing the design to the parish led to a quick and successful capital campaign.

The completed renovation and addition addresses the building’s existing aesthetic and practical shortcomings. Careful use of proportion bestows a greater impression of height on the redeveloped nave. The addition of arched Gothic aisles and a blind triforium draw the eye to the chancel, now focused on a new handcarved and painted altarpiece depicting

Biblical scenes in traditional Flemish style, with wings that can be closed for Lent. Above, stenciled roses and lilies represent the Crucifixion and Resurrection, connecting the reredos with new Gothic windows above. A carved pulpit and sounding board, altar rail, paneling, clergy seating, and multicolored Spanish marble floor further dignify the renewed interior. A tester, or canopy, hangs far above the altar, adding a splash of color amid the stained wood roof trusses.

At the rear of the church, a new extended choir loft compensates for seating lost to a previous organ installation. Below, at nave level, this creates a permanent baptistery defined by four Gothic columns. Overhead is an inset ceiling depicting the descending dove of the Holy Ghost.

The renewed baptistery is further demarcated by a new octagonal stone floor in Jerusalem Gold, Rojo Alicante and Empress Green. The eightsided marble font is ornamented with symbols of the seven sacraments, and on its eighth side, a rampant lion to represent the Resurrection.

The area for adult baptism is enclosed with a hand-forged bronze rail with twisted corner posts. Its gate is ornamented with a repoussé relief of Saint John baptizing Christ in the Jordan enclosed within a wreath, also made according to the firm’s designs.

The existing sacristy was updated and reconfigured to add circulation and storage space, as well as new cabinetry, flooring, and a vented fireproof station for incense preparation.

A new two-story addition to the building provides much-needed program space in the form of a wood-paneled clergy vestry for preparation and prayer. On ita lower floor is a marble-lined columbarium and memorial chapel designed to double as the repository during Holy Week. Its vaulted ceiling is painted with a pattern depicting the stars over Mount Calvary on the night of Good Friday in AD 33. Scripture passages in Gothic calligraphy adorn the walls. The quiet, contemplative chapel has been adopted by the parish community as a location for weekday liturgies.

The renovation of Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church was completed in Spring 2021.

CHURCH OF THE INCARNATION HIGHL ANDS, NORTH CAROLINA

---------------------------------Interior Redesign, Furnishing Design, Renovations, New Spire and Entry Additions Completed 2022

T

HE Church of the Incarnation sits at the heart of Highlands’ vibrant downtown. Founded in 1894 as a mission of the diocese, the new community built its first sanctuary two years later. This historic white clapboard chapel still anchors the church’s corner lot. By the 1990s, the parish’s summer community had grown considerably. A new sanctuary, classrooms, offices and an expanded kitchen and hall were added in 2002. The agglomeration of additions lacked internal coherence, had no clear entrance, and the sanctuary was chill and plain.

Cram and Ferguson Architects was commissioned to revitalize the structure, creating a coherent entry sequence to the sanctuary and a more reverent space within. The resulting renovation transformed virtually every aspect of the building, from a soaring new steeple to a cozy Tudor fireplace nook in the parish house’s reimagined entry hall. The addition of a street

level entry to the sanctuary via a stair hall daylit from above gave a new presence to the church building on the town’s main thoroughfare.

The sanctuary was transformed from a thruststage arrangement in a bland space dominated by heavy trusses, to an intimate and luminous nave characterized by warm carved wood, stone paving, and a ceiling illusionistically raised through color, lighting and decoration.

Further new elements included choir seating in a traditional stall arrangement, a carved altarpiece, altar and paneling, and an entirely new painted decorative scheme combining scriptural passages in bold Gothic calligraphy from the first chapter of the Gospel of John interspersed with symbols of the twelve Apostles.

The Church of the Incarnation was rededicated in September 2022.

SAINT THOMA S AQUINA S UNIVERSITY PARISH CHURCH UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA

---------------------------------New 1,200-seat church Completed 2020

S

T. Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican Orderstaffed parish serving the University of Virginia and the local community, sought to replace its 1994 central-plan church, undersized, gloomy and aging, with a more traditional and durable design capable of serving its vibrant congregation of students, professors, and growing young families, attracted by the friars’ preaching, liturgy, and confession ministry.

At the adjoining University of Virginia, founder Thomas Jefferson employed a signature classical language of red brick and white painted wood trim. We utilized similar brick and pale cast stone, but drew on medieval Italian Ro-

manesque architecture rather than that of colonial America. The heart of UVA is its iconic domed library, rationalism alone, but here the dome stands within a square Greek cross plan, uniting faith and reason.

The equal-armed layout, while dictated by the small site, marries a sense of procession and hierarchy to clear sightlines and an intimate connection to the altar. Local ordinances restricted the height of the nave roof and cupola, forcing us to seek a creative solution.

Nonetheless, within, soaring arches and a luminous star-covered dome create a spacious, bright and lofty interior.

The white Carrara altar, font and ambo were crafted to our designs in Italy, embellished with relief carvings and contrasting colonnettes of dark Rosso Barocco. Stone flooring features Cosmatesque-inspired patterns in complementary rich green, crimson and gold tones, set within a field of travertine.

SHRINE OF OUR L ADY OF GOOD VOYAGE BOSTON, MA SSACHUSETTS

---------------------------------Interior Design, Furnishing Design and Exterior Consulting for New Shrine Church Completed 2017

O

RIGINALLY founded in 1952 to serve as a mission to dock workers and sailors, in 2014 the chapel of Our Lady of Good Voyage was scheduled to relocate to a new site and new building along Boston’s redeveloped waterfront.

Cram and Ferguson’s interior for their new location pays tribute to the heritage of the Archdiocese through incorporating repurposed stained glass from closed parishes, while new custom furnishings recall the chapel’s mission by incorporating imagery both maritime and sacred, such as the Marian Star of the Sea. The main exterior wood plank doors feature hand-wrought anchor hinges and are flanked by stained glass images of the Virgin and the fisherman St. Peter, designed by Cram and Ferguson. The wooden nave ceiling recalls in its arched trusses ships’ hulls, while the Gothic columns below feature the names

of the four rivers of Paradise from Genesis incised into their capitals. An inscription above, taken from a beloved passage in the Psalms, recalls God’s watchful care over “[t]hey that go down to the sea in ships.”

While the altar and tabernacle shrine are salvaged from closed Boston churches, they required substantial reconfiguration, including a new marble back for the freestanding altar.

The antique stained glass along the aisles also required reworking to create pointed Gothic tops, with those along the church’s alley side incorporating backlighting designed by Cram and Ferguson. A new crucifix, ambo, sanctuary paneling and hand-carved screens, complement both the repurposed furniture and the Gothic interior as a whole. The nave is paved in travertine and the sanctuary in a pattern composed of Emperador Dark marble and Rojo Alicante from quarries in southeastern Spain.

The new shrine was dedicated by His Eminence Seán Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, in 2017. While young professionals have replaced stevedores, the new Our Lady of Good Voyage is a bustling center of Catholic life in the Seaport District.

ST. EDWARD’S CHAPEL CA SADY SCHOOL OKL AHOMA CITY, OK

---------------------------------Tower, Transept and Cloister Addition to Historic School Chapel Completed 2011

S

T. Edward’s Chapel at Casady School was designed by Cram and Ferguson in 1949.

In 2009, the firm was approached to complete the original concept for the chapel by adding new east and west transepts. Before, a temporary wooden addition had sufficed.

The new transepts house, respectively, offices and a sacristy to the east, and to the west, a large ready room for musical practice and performances featuring a large new Gothic window with carved limestone tracery developed through study of the firm’s historic 1928 chapel at St. George’s School in Newport, RI. A careful study of traffic patterns on campus suggested the addition of cloisters on each side to encourage student engagement with

St. Edward’s Chapel over the course of the academic day.

Remedial and restoration work to the main nave was also required, including adding insulation to the roof, installing new slate roofing and cleaning the existing masonry.

New custom wood doors with hand-wrought pulls replaced an aluminum set, restoring the intended appearance of the chapel’s main portal.

The new 95-foot tower includes a 23-bell carillon, now serving as a figurative beacon and literal focal point visible across the extensive campus.

Before The new addition to St. Edward’s Chapel was officially dedicated in 2011.

ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

---------------------------------Interior Redesign, Furnishing Design, and Renovations with Planned Entry Addition Phase I completed November 2023

B

UILT in 1965 on a new site to replace a small wooden frame church, St. Andrew’s supports both a vibrant Catholic school and a strong if seasonal community. Fr. Roger Morgan approached Cram and Ferguson Architects in 2017 to develop an initial master plan for renovating the church’s interior, updating the sacristy and vestries, and a new enlarged narthex gathering space with choir loft and overflow seating above.

After presentation and review of the master plan, continued design work, and a short fund raising campaign, construction on Phase I, covering the nave, new sanctuary furnishings and finishes, and restroom and sacristy improvements, began in early 2023.

Rather than the hard-edged angles of the original design, the renovated interior features new Gothic arches and lancet windows, an enlarged sanctuary paved with Spanish stone tile, and a new altarpiece, altar, and ambo in carved wood and multicolored marble, embellished with symbolism inspired by the church’s fisherman patron saint.

Dolphins, symbols of Christian hope, frolic along chancel paneling, and the Lamb of God on the altar is ringed with sea laurel. The St. Andrew’s cross appears throughout, as do the emblems of seafarer saints such as Brendan, Clement, and Nicholas.

The church’s new altar and sanctuary was re-dedicated in November 2023. The future Phase II will consist of the addition of a new enlarged narthex with deeper choir loft above, featuring a beautiful new façade for the church’s streetfront. It will include expanded restrooms, an improved handicap entry, and a striking new Gothic top for the church’s bell tower, proclaiming the church’s identity on the busiest thoroughfare of this bustling beach town.

ACRED Heart owes its 1880 foundation to a law by which settlers could claim 160 acres of land by planting a ten acre grove of trees. Its original site was a “Tree Claim,” as is the present location. The current 1934

church is reaching its centenary, and, while well-maintained, is in need of refreshment and renovation. A renovation in the 1980s washed out the interior with pale pastels, added a thrust-stage arrangement for the altar, and covered the vaults with accoustic ceiling tile. Cram and Ferguson’s masterplan proposes a restoration of the original sanctuary layout, an extended choirloft with restrooms below, a new altarpiece and decorative scheme restoring the vaults and complementing the church’s extraordinary expanse of antique stained glass.

URING Cram and Ferguson’s first heyday at the turn of the last century, the firm’s work included not only Catholic and Episcopal churches, but an ecumenical roster of institutions from Presbyterian, Methodist and other backgrounds due to a growing ecumenical movement reconnecting with art, beauty and liturgical tradition.

In 2022, we had a similar opportunity when Trinity Presbyterian asked us to design an interior for their under-construction community building to serve as a social hall and a fitting temporary space for worship. It will feature, within a Reformed context, a rich program of iconographic woodwork, from hammerbeam trusses depicting moments in biblical history to a communion table, pulpit, paneling and screens embellished with a vine-and-branches motif, mustard seeds and leaves, as well as a range of Gothic arches and a stone hearth.

N 2015, the beatification cause was opened for fifty-seven missionary friars, native Christians, and European settlers martyred in Spanish Florida from 1549 to 1715, victims of unconverted tribes and the invading English. In 2020, the lay organization spearheading the effort with local diocesan support commissioned Cram and Ferguson to design a shrine on a wooded, gently rolling site near the historic mission trail, the Camino Real.

The complex will appeal to pilgrims and the local faithful equally. Cram and Ferguson developed an extensive site plan with a statue and tree-lined avenue leading up to the Oratory and Pilgrim Center. These main elements of the shrine are placed around a plaza and linked by a rosary walk cloister

decorated within with scenes of the lives of the martyrs. The central square, shaded by orange trees and cooled by a large fountain, will serve as a space for outdoor masses and gatherings.

The Pilgrim Center on the north side of the cloister will orient newcomers to the martyrs’ story. The Oratory itself is designed in the Churrigueresque style, drawing on precedents from across Latin America and Spain and incorporating local native symbolism, a tribute to the hybrid mission culture that flourished here. At its heart will be a carved and gilded Baroque retablo, with future side shrines planned to memorialize the martyrs after beatification A camarín or Hispanicstyle rear chapel will house an image of Our Lady, Queen of the Martyrs.

With, in late 2023, the beatification process moving to its next stage in Rome, Florida may soon be graced with this memorial to an extraordinary moment in American

ESTROYED by fire in 2005, the historic cathedral of Saint Raphael was located in the vibrant downtown of Madison, Wisconsin.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino approached Cram and Ferguson in 2017 to design a replacement that would be a a beacon of faith in a secular city, returning, as he put it, church spires to the skyline. The proposed cathedral would be built in two phases, the first a cathedral parish house and rectory, with a crypt chapel, the second the main portion of the cathedral. A partnership with local businesses was pursued to finance

the project through a parking garage located beneath both. The liturgical layout is the result of close consultation with the bishop, with a generous sanctuary centered on a marble altar beneath a Gothic baldachin and ample space for concelebrants and attendants for a bishop’s stational mass. Sacristies and vestries were designed to accomodate regular masses and solemn diocesan liturgies.

The sudden death of Bishop Morlino in late 2018 and diocesan restructuring in the wake of the 2020 pandemic meant that his last vision remains still a dream, but its power to inspire is nonetheless undimmed.

A CATHOLIC CHAPEL AND STUDENT CENTER IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST OKL AHOMA

I

NTENDED as an initial stylistic study for our recently completed project of St. John’s University Catholic Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, this early design represents a window into our creative process. While a variety of styles and material palettes were considered for the student center, we initially explored a simplified Spanish Churrigueresque style that would pay tribute to the early roots of Catholicism in the region, and also allow for a simplified, costeffective design of elegantly-massed volumes punctuated by moments of high ornamentation at important points such as portals, gates and towers. The proposed plan was arranged around a Mission-inspired courtyard that would create a private exterior space still permitting, through ironwork grills, glimpses of the central

chapel from the main thoroughfare, a major artery of campus. Two wings, connected by a vestibule running across the front of the chapel, with a separate narthex beyond, would house classrooms, study spaces and a dining hall, with circulation through the cloisters on either side.

Trees, fountains, a grassy lawn, and shaded arcades counteract the Oklahoma sun. A bell tower rises from the northeastern rear corner of the church, serving as a powerful way-marker across campus.

After further discussion with the client, we instead drew on the older precedents of the Italian Romanesque, as presented earlier in this portfolio of recent work. The new student center was dedicated in 2023.
