We would like to thank everyone who has made the 2023 Craigmillar and Niddrie Community Festival possible.
First, the Festival wouldn’t happen without the hard work and commitment of the planning committee, a voluntary team that has been meeting for months to bring this year’s Festival to life. Thank you also to Colin at the Whitehouse Kitchen for generously offering the cafe space for planning meetings.
We’re also very grateful to the volunteers who have offered to share their time over the summer, supporting the programme and the Festival Hub.
We must also thank the many local people and organisations that have programmed activities especially for the event - as you continue reading through this booklet, you’ll see just how much support and enthusiasm there is for the Festival this summer! Where possible,
we have included contact information for each participating group and hope this booklet will serve as a handy directory for the local area during and after the Festival.
A huge thanks also goes to our funders
The National Lottery, for supporting the event for a second year, and to all the advertisers in this booklet. A special thanks to Uta and Alan Rosenbrock and Jim Dalgety of kindly raising funds for the Festival through a jumble sale.
Unlike in previous years where the Festival ran for one weekend, this year we have extended the event, so activities take place throughout July and August during weekdays, weekends and evenings. We hope this will mean our Community Festival will be accessible to even more people and brings a summer full of creativity, fun and new connections in Craigmillar and Niddrie.

In 2022, Craigmillar Now commissioned Angela to revisit the Craigmillar and Niddrie Community Festival, documenting the events, the attendees, and the organisers over two days in August. A selection of photos from this recent commission will be presented alongside early works by Angela taken in Craigmillar and Niddrie in the 1970s.

And Who’s She When She’s At Home? is a collaborative multimedia poetry installation based on themes of heritage, home, and class by Ellen Renton and Megan Rudden. Stemming from various family history discoveries and layers of coincidence within them, personal stories are combined with stories from previous generations to create a living and breathing record of
history with contemporary relevance. Alongside the installation there will be live performances by Ellen over two weekends, please check the HES website for times and dates of performances.

OPENING PARADE
Sat 1 July, 11am
Bridgend Farmhouse to Craigmillar Library
Opening Parade (11-11.50am – with face painting and costume making from 10.15am at Bridgend)
Join us at Bridgend Farmhouse for the Craigmillar and Niddrie Festival launch Parade. The Parade starts at 11am and will process through Craigmillar Castle Park, following a route down Craigmillar Castle Gardens, before joining Niddrie Mains Road to arrive at Craigmillar Library at approximately 11.50am. (The route is fully wheelchair accessible.)
The theme of this year’s Parade has been inspired by the subtitle of the 2010 Craigmillar Arts, Culture and Heritage
Trail booklet: In the Footsteps of Time. We suggest that people taking part in the Parade use local Craigmillar and Niddrie history as a starting point to inspire costumes and props.
Greater Craigmillar has a rich working history, both agricultural and industrial, including industries such as coal mining, brewing, and brick making, alongside the history associated with Craigmillar Castle itself. Come dressed to represent a trade or occupation, or arrive early (from 10.15am) for face painting and costume making inspired by the Niddrie Standing Stone and the Forager’s Forest (more info next page).

The Good, The Bad and The Poultry will be performed at Craigmillar Library 12pm after the Parade, see Lyra events for more info
Walking in the Footsteps of Time
Starts at Bridgend Farmhouse with the Parade
(see previous page)
Sat 1 July
A collaboration between Art Walk Projects, Bridgend Farmhouse, Creative Action Network, Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust, and Mutual Studio.
While designed as a day’s walk –starting and finishing at Bridgend Farmhouse – each walk and event can be attended as a one-off activity. Participants are free to come and go throughout the day or to walk in the footsteps of time all day. (If walking all day, please bring sufficient food and water to sustain yourself.) The first walk in this programme, The Parade is the main family event.
Hope’s Walk (12.30-1pm)
From Craigmillar Library to Niddrie Standing Stone. This walk is an opportunity to share with others our concerns and hopes for the future. This walk serves the practical purpose of guiding participants from Craigmillar Library to the site of the Niddrie Standing Stone. It also acts as an introduction to some of the themes explored during the remainder of the day.
Niddrie Standing Stone and Natural Weaving Activity
(1pm-2pm – with time for lunch)
Following work undertaken in collaboration with Edinburgh City Council, this event introduces the Niddrie Standing Stone and launches a community engagement project called Custodians of the Stone. The launch will be followed by a simple, all age, weaving activity, making foraging baskets from materials found near the standing stone. Weaving with natural materials connects us with the activities of the past and with the plants that grow around us. Baskets can be used on the next part of the walk or taken home. (Note: weaving will take place in the grounds of Wauchope Cemetery, adjacent to the Niddrie Standing Stone.)
Contact: Jonathan at jb4change@gmail. com or see CraigmillarCAN Facebook.
Forager’s Walk (2-3pm)
Led by herbalists from Herbal Scotland and hosted by Edinburgh & Lothian Greenspace Trust (ELGT), we will walk in the footsteps of our most ancient ancestors; the hunter gatherers who first made Scotland their home around 14,000 years ago; walking from the Niddrie Standing Stone through Little France Park to the site of the new Forager’s Forest.
The Forager’s Forest will be a blend of the old and the new. It will encompass those vital heritage species that people have relied on for food, fibre and timber for thousands of years. However, climate change brings many challenges to us and also to the plants and animals that share the land with us. Many species are migrating and changing their habits to adapt. We will be exploring which new species are arriving, how we can support a rich ecosystem and offer habitat for these species and also explore what opportunities this offers in foraging.
Contact: Elly at elly@elgt.org or see Craigmillar Castle Park Facebook.
Deep Time Geology Walk (3-4pm)
From Little France Forager’s Forest there are spectacular views of Arthur’s Seat, standing proudly on the Edinburgh skyline. Taking inspiration from Arthur’s Seat and recalling the pre-history of the Niddrie Standing Stone, Alistair McGowan (geologist, palaeontologist and natural historian) will describe some of the key features of this geological history in Little France Park and Craigmillar Castle Park. We will also consider how this geological history might inform our understanding of today’s changing climate.
Meeting in Mutual – woodland installation (4-4.30pm; ‘open’ for other visitors from 11am)
Located in a corner of Craigmillar Woods, artists from Mutual Studio will create a temporary site-specific installation, weaving together members’ practises with the history of Craigmillar woods, using found materials to create a surreal resting place as we approach the conclusion of our walk.
Full Circle (4.30-5.30pm)
Following a short walk from the Meeting in Mutual site-specific installation back to Bridgend Farmhouse, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the day’s themes by creating a temporary, collaborative artwork.
