AFCH PHASE 2 READING ROOM AREA
Margaret Andrews Project Manager
UW Health Planning Design & Construction
7974 UW Health Court, Middleton, WI 53562
November 7th, 2025
We are honored to have been invited to submit our proposal for UW Health’s AFCH 1st floor phase 2 Reading Room Area Project. Plunkett Raysich Architects, LLP (PRA) brings a wealth of experience in healthcare to the table, boasting an impressive 90-year history marked by the successful design and construction of numerous facilities, including many renovations and additions and past project experience with UW Health. Our approach prioritizes maintaining facility operations seamlessly during the design and construction phases, without disruptions or impositions to your facilities and the patients you serve. We are also proud of our ability to consistently meet targeted timelines at, or below budget, which are critical factors in a project’s success.
In the enclosed qualifications packet, you will find evidence of our proficiency in designing additions, renovations, and ground-up new construction of clinical spaces and facilities. You have the assurance that our team of architects and engineers are well equipped to guide UWH in realizing its vision and project goals. We can also guarantee that our team has the dedication and follow-through to carry projects successfully through the project approval process.
Our understanding of the project scope requires us to provide architectural, interior design, MEP/FP and Technology Engineering, Furniture-Fixture-Equipment Planning and Medical Equipment Planning services to design for the renovation of previously vacated PET/CT space on the 1st floor and plan for the relocation of existing Ultrasound spaces to that new location. Also, the original Ultrasound area and existing offices will become the new space for the permanent IR Reading Room and work area. Additionally, part of the phasing of this project will place the IR Reading Room temporarily in what will be the “future staff break room” which contains a plumbing connection for a sink in one of the walls of the area along with the area having new vinyl flooring.
At PRA, every facility project is seen as an opportunity to shape the future. Our objective is to create a built environment that offers optimal experiences for all users, aligning seamlessly with the goals of UWH. In pursuit of this, we assembled a highly effective and collaborative team, aiming to establish a transformative and lasting relationship with UWH and all project stakeholders. Our pride is rooted in our ability to work cohesively, ensuring our process incorporates three key steps for success:
LISTEN We actively listen to UWH to comprehend its values and goals for the project.
LEARN We absorb insights from UWH regarding the current and future operations of their facilities and seek to understand UWH’s set standards for specific room design.
LEAD Finally, we lead UWH through a collaborative process, integrating our understanding, experience, and innovation to craft optimal solutions aligned with its goals.
The project’s journey, and aiming to achieve UWH’s goals through an engaging, thought-provoking, and streamlined process, is paramount. Successful navigation of this process hinges on excellent collaboration and a cohesive relationship among all involved parties. We firmly believe that we are the right team, armed with knowledge, chemistry, and innovation, to ensure the project’s success. We are excited and motivated by this project and would be thrilled to further discuss our potential to create a great team together which will accomplish UWH’s goals!
Best regards,

Kevin Broich, AIA, NCARB

“Thank you all for your efforts in the design, construction, commissioning, operations, and maintenance of this clinic and helping UW Health manage energy costs without sacrificing the remarkable care we give our patients.”
Statz, Director of Facilties Services, UW Health Union Corners
The new 2-story, 60,000 SF clinic for UW Health includes space for General Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, lab and imaging services, Urgent Care and a pharmacy. The design of the building supports an efficient flow of patients and staff through an on stage/ off stage design in the exam areas. There are two doors to each exam room, one for the patient to enter and one for the staff to use. The staff door leads to a central work area for care providers, with access to medications and support functions. This design allows the physician and nursing staff to remain in close proximity to the patients while also fostering collaboration and communication among the staff.
The clinic is designed to replace the traditional multi-station check-in counters in each clinic with self service kiosks. Because of this, sightlines and patient circulation have been designed to simplify wayfinding. The building is also located along a busy thoroughfare in downtown Madison, thus requiring entrances on opposite sides of the building and a central circulation “spine.” The project is slated to achieve LEED Certification through the use of local and recycled materials, energy efficiency, irrigation-free landscaping and several other sustainable design techniques.

The state-of-the-art Women’s Pavilion was enabled by a small building addition that strategically links larger areas of the hospital that were previously not connected. The new connection fosters a seamless transition from outpatient to inpatient care, allowing comprehensive women’s services to integrate with broader hospital amenities. The connection also allows staff to efficiently provide care for both patient populations. The Women’s Outpatient Center waiting and reception areas can now take advantage of an enclosed courtyard that bathes the areas with natural daylight. Patient care spaces are clustered around a central provider hub that facilitates collaboration among care team members.
Some additional features of the project include:
• Exam/consultation rooms designed to allow patient to remain in one room while receiving care from a variety of care providers.
• Digital ultrasound rooms and featuring viewing monitors for family interaction
• An ultrasound-guided procedure room
• 3 Genetic Counseling Studios
• A phlebotomy area conveniently located near multiple hospital-based clinics
• A central radiology reading area with a dozen stations and an adjacent collaboration space
• Women’s Triage suite for both inpatient and outpatient evaluation and immediate care
Ten years after the initial construction, Meriter asked PRA to assist with identifying opportunities to accommodate additional patient volumes in the Women’s Outpatient Center. To achieve this, staff offices were relocated nearby, allowing these areas to be renovated into additional ultrasound and reading rooms. The work was accomplished in multiple construction phases to ensure that ongoing operations could continue with minimal disruption to patients and staff.
WOMEN AND INFANTS CENTER EXPANSION
UPH MERITER HOSPITAL | MADISON, WI
SCOPE Provided architectural design services for a 36,000 SF expansion.
COMPLETION 2018
OWNER UnityPoint Health | Meriter, 202 South Park Street Madison, WI 53715

“I never hesitate to involve PRA in the presentation of architectural design details to our hospitals leadership, physicians or other individuals within our organization.”
UnityPoint Health - Meriter Hospital faced a capacity shortage in their Women and Infants Center, with a need to grow to accommodate for the care of 850 additional women, infants, and families. The award-winning expansion involved the renovation of 36,000 SF of existing hospital space to create more birthing and NICU suites, family spaces, ultrasound suites, a milk laboratory, and support space for additional staff. It also incorporated new major mechanical systems.
The new space is designed to blend seamlessly into the distinct visual identity of the existing Women and Infants Center space. The organization of the space was planned to maximize efficiency of staff without sacrificing patient comfort. The project was completed in a condensed timeframe, going from planning to occupancy over the course of less than 18 months. It also required carefully planned phasing to avoid disrupting existing patient care areas.

SCOPE 63,000 SF new building.
COMPLETION 2019
OWNER Women’s Care of Wisconsin | 200 Theda Clark Medical Plaza, Suite 130 Neenah, WI 54956

A leader in the excellence of women’s healthcare, Women’s Care of Wisconsin enlisted PRA to help create a new specialty clinic in Neenah, WI. The new facility needed to support clinic staff in providing the most advanced healthcare techniques within an environment that is functional and efficient, but also comfortable and compassionate. The 3-story facility includes OB/GYN exam rooms, an ultrasound and radiology reading suite, laboratory space, physical therapy suite, and physician office space. The facility is designed based on an on-stage/off-stage concept, providing clear separation between the public/patient areas and the staff’s “working side” of the building. It also features larger than typical exam rooms, split into two rooms by sliding partition panels. This innovative concept alleviates the initial rooming and waiting issues for both patients and their families and provides controlled, private space.
MEDICAL IMAGING RADIOLOGY READING ROOM
UPH MERITER HOSPITAL | MADISON, WI
SCOPE Renovation of 3,000 SF for private radiology reading rooms and collaboration spaces within the Medical Imaging Department.
COMPLETION 2017
OWNER Meriter - UnityPoint Health | 202 South Park Street, Madison, WI 53715

The Medical Imaging Department at Meriter Hospital is a very active patient care area, where precision, efficiency, and focus are essential. With no room for physical expansion, PRA partnered with Hospital leadership and the radiology team to create innovative, high-performance reading environments within the existing department footprint.
To enhance workflow efficiency and ensure radiologists remain close to imaging operations, PRA designed state-of-the-art radiology reading suites located directly within the Medical Imaging Department in close proximity to the imaging rooms. The project provides 17 reading stations, a dedicated post-processing area, and a collaboration space that supports real-time team interaction and group image review.
Working closely with the radiology team PRA developed highly functional environments that maximize focus and comfort. Each reading station is highly adjustable, allowing users to personalize their workspace and maintain concentration throughout long reading sessions.
To further support visual comfort and accuracy, blue light technology was integrated to enhance image interpretation and reduce eye fatigue. Individual reading rooms feature full glass partitions and soft-close doors, minimizing acoustic interruptions while still maintaining a strong visual connection between team members. Through thoughtful design and close collaboration, PRA delivered a space that empowers radiologists to perform at their best—balancing advanced technology, human comfort, and seamless workflow.
ASPIRUS WAUSAU HOSPITAL
WAUSAU, WI
SCOPE Renovation of imagine department at Wausau hospital as part of a comprehensive master facility plan.
COMPLETION 2008
OWNER Aspirus Health | 333 Pine Ridge Boulevard, Wausau, WI 54401

This floor plan highlights ultrasound and reading rooms that were renovated at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, similar to your proposed project.

As part of a comprehensive master facility plan, the hospital’s imaging department underwent a thoughtful transformation designed to elevate both patient experience and staff efficiency. A new, welcoming imaging waiting area anchored the department near the main hospital entrance, offering patients a convenient and calming first impression.
The reimagined suite for breast health, x-ray, and fluoroscopy brought together central reading and quality control spaces positioned close to each imaging modality, keeping staff connected to patient care. Larger ultrasound rooms with adjacent ADA-compliant toilet rooms replaced older, less family-friendly spaces, providing a more comfortable environment for patients and families alike.
Additional upgrades included a dedicated nuclear medicine pod, a new PET/CT suite, and expanded CT rooms located near the emergency department—enhancing access and improving workflow. Together, these updates consolidated and expanded imaging services while streamlining movement for both patients and staff.
Construction and equipment installation and relocation were carefully phased over a two-year period to ensure uninterrupted patient care throughout the renovation.
