Its strategic geographic location means that the Port of Tuxpan is the closest commercial seaport to the country’s major consumer center. With the completion of the Mexico-Tuxpan highway, the distance between this port and the Mexican capital will be reduced to 270 km, making it the best alternative for the distribution of merchandise throughout the zone. It currently has public and private specialized facilities that are efficient and productive. The Port expects to increase its movement of containers and vehicles, thanks to an investment by the SSA consortium for the construction of a dock measuring 560 meters in length adjacent to a parcel of land they own, on which they plan to build a specialized facility. The container terminal will feature innovative state-of-the-art technology, such as Super Panamax gantry cranes as well as automated yard cranes, which will be the first of their kind in the country. All of this technology will help the port focus on maximizing the loading and unloading efficiency of container and general cargo vessels, thereby allowing it to offer its zone of influence competitive operational standards with which to connect the flow of international trade coming in by sea from Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the West Coast of the United States and Canada; Central and South America, as well as traffic from the Far East, the latter through the Panama Canal. This terminal will have an installed capacity that will enable it to move 900 thousand containers per year. In the month of September construction began on phase 1 of the dock for the reception of state-of-the-art container-carrying vessels, as well as work on yard infrastructure, administrative buildings, warehouses, work-shops, with plans to begin operations by the end of 2015.
