ROAD SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S BUSINESS

It is that time of year where I typically dedicate this space to talk about taking extra care in the heat of the summer months. And of course, I am sure many of you have already seen tyre carcasses on our roads. I am also writing this as I spend a quick couple of weeks back in the UK and it has been surprising to see that the roads here are also, sadly, covered in evidence of more accidents and near-misses. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it is because fleets are turning to cheaper alternatives, careless driving… the list which will be familiar reading to us all goes on. Road safety is everyone’s business – wherever you are.

Attending the recent Commercial Road Safety event hosted by RoadSafetyUAE and Daimler Truck Middle East Africa left a lasting impression on me before I flew back — not just as an editor, but as someone who shares the road with fleets and freight vehicles every day.

The reality that over a third of all traffic fatalities in the UAE involve commercial vehicles is deeply sobering. It’s a statistic we cannot ignore, and it was impossible not to feel the weight of that during the presentations and discussions at Daimler’s impressive Training Center in Dubai. What struck me most was the honest and urgent tone of the session. This wasn’t a platform for corporate platitudes. It was a wake-up call. From Thomas Edelmann’s direct appeal to

“make our voice heard,” to the technical walk-through led by Daimler’s team, it was clear that road safety isn’t just a policy — it’s a shared responsibility that must be actively practised and enforced at every level of fleet operations.

There’s no doubt that technology like telematics, predictive maintenance, and tyre safety solutions are game changers, but they’re only as effective as the people behind the wheel and the leadership that supports them. Sunil Jaganathan’s reminder that “every fleet owner thinks they have the best drivers” was a reality check that resonated throughout the room.

As a journalist covering this sector, I’ve seen time and again how safety can be overshadowed by operational pressures. But this event made it clear: investing in road safety is not a cost—it’s a necessity. And in the world of commercial transport, it could mean the difference between a routine delivery and a tragic headline.

If we are serious about reducing fatalities and making our roads safer, especially for those in the fleet and logistics industry, then we must continue to shine a light on accountability, training, and data-driven decision-making. I walked away from this event feeling hopeful, but also more committed than ever to keeping road safety at the forefront of the conversation.

Because ultimately, no delivery is worth a life.

WERIDE, RTA, AND UBER TO LAUNCH AV PILOT SCHEME IN DUBAI AHEAD OF 2026 ROLLOUT

WeRide has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Uber to begin pilot operations of self-driving vehicles on the Uber app in Dubai later this year, with a full-scale commercial rollout of autonomous mobility services planned for 2026.

The partnership marks a major step forward in Dubai’s ambition to become a global leader and aligns with the emirate’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which targets 25% of all trips

to be autonomous by 2030.

In a joint statement, the three organisations confirmed that field preparations for the pilot phase are already underway, with the RTA providing strategic oversight and regulatory support. The initial rollout will see autonomous vehicles operating with safety drivers onboard to monitor systems and ensure rider safety.

Dubai will be the second city in the region to host autonomous rides via Uber, following the successful launch of WeRide and Uber Robotaxis in Abu Dhabi in December 2024 — the first

time Uber deployed autonomous vehicles outside the United States.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, stated: “The introduction of autonomous vehicles in Dubai represents a significant leap towards a smart and sustainable future for mobility, in line with the vision of our leadership to transform Dubai into the world’s smartest city.

“It also supports the objectives of the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which seeks

to convert 25% of all mobility journeys in the emirate into autonomous trips across various transport modes by 2030. This MoU reinforces Dubai’s global leadership in adopting advanced and sustainable transport solutions, embracing state-of-theart technologies, and fostering innovative mobility initiatives.”

Building on the success of that programme, WeRide and Uber expanded their global partnership in May 2025 with a bold vision to deploy Robotaxis in 15 additional cities worldwide over the next five years.

ALIEXPRESS LAUNCHES DIRECT-TOCONSUMER EV PORTAL

RETAIL

AliExpress, the global e-commerce platform under Alibaba Group, has unveiled a new service allowing consumers in the UAE to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) directly through its platform. Set to launch during this month’s AliExpress Summer Sale, the service marks the first time EVs have been made available through a global online marketplace for UAE customers.

Initially available exclusively to buyers in the UAE, the service will expand to other GCC countries in the near future.

This move signals a major shift in the region’s automotive retail landscape, offering consumers the ability to browse and order the latest EV models — including popular names such as BYD, Geely, Jetour, and Toyota — through the AliExpress Big Save Channel. Vehicles will be shipped from China via sea freight.

AliExpress says the initiative aligns with the UAE’s Vision 2031, which aims to boost sustainable development and quality of life through innovation across key sectors. By making EVs more accessible to all income brackets, the platform hopes to support the country’s environmental and economic goals.

The timing of the launch coincides with strong momentum in the local EV market, noted a company spokesperson. There are currently more than 70,000 electric vehicles on UAE roads, with forecasts predicting this figure will rise to 100,000 by 2027.

Growth is being fuelled by favourable government policies, investment in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and increasing consumer awareness of environmental issues.

ŠKODA AUTO APPOINTS Q-AUTO IN QATAR

DISTRIBUTORS

Škoda Auto has named Q-Auto as its exclusive distributor in Qatar, bolstering the Czech brand’s presence in the Middle East and reinforcing its commitment to long-term growth in the region. A new Škoda showroom and service centre is scheduled to open in the second half of 2025 at Street 41, while a temporary display at Doha Festival City is already showcasing several of the brand’s flagship vehicles.

The strategic partnership with Q-Auto, a well-established player in Qatar’s automotive sector, is expected to deliver premium service standards and strengthen Škoda’s regional identity. Known for its prior work with Volkswagen and Audi, Q-Auto brings proven sales, service, and aftersales capabilities to the new venture. All existing warranties for Škoda vehicles in Qatar will continue to be honoured

under the new arrangement.

Customers in Qatar now have access to five of Škoda’s leading models, reflecting the brand’s European engineering, safety credentials, and Simply Clever design approach. These include the seven-seat Kodiaq SUV, the compact and stylish Karoq, the city-friendly Kushaq, the globally popular Octavia, and the all-new Superb,

which is set to target Qatar’s growing fleet and executive car market.

Speaking on the partnership, Lukas Honzak, Managing Director of Škoda Middle East, said: “Q-Auto brings a strong reputation for service excellence through its previous work with Volkswagen and Audi. This fully supports our regional expansion plan and lays the foundation for long-term growth here. “

AWR DEAL OPENS DOOR FOR JMMC BUSES

DISTRIBUTORS

AW Rostamani (AWR) Group has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with JMIE (Jiangxi Jiangling Motors Import and Export Co., Ltd.), securing the UAE rights to the JMMC brand, part of China’s JMCG (Jiangling Motors Corporation Group).

Both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle variants will be introduced to AWR’s commercial vehicle

portfolio via the distribution deal. A signing ceremony to mark the deal was attended by Khalid Al Rostamani, Chairman and Group CEO of AW Rostamani Group, and Tom Fux, CEO of AWR Automotive, alongside HU Yong, General Manager, MEA of JMMC.

Under the new agreement, AWR will serve as the exclusive distributor of JMMC’s full product line in the UAE,

including current models and upcoming releases. With deliveries of the 7.2M (7.2-metre in length) buses set to begin in July 2025, AWR will harness its extensive infrastructure, including dedicated storage and after-sales service facilities, to support the roll-out of JMMC vehicles across the Emirates.

The partnership begins with a focus on the 7.2-metre buses, before extending into 5.5-metre vans — in both gasoline and electric variants — as well as EV buses, although an expected delivery schedule for the latter was not shared at the announcement.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to diversifying our automotive portfolio while meeting the evolving needs of the UAE market,” said Khalid Al Rostamani. “JMMC’s proven track record in commercial vehicles, combined with their competitive pricing structure.”

AD AIRPORTS AND JDP’S NEW E-COMMERCE HUB

LOGISTICS

Abu Dhabi Airports has entered into a landmark joint venture with JINGDONG Property (JDP), the logistics infrastructure arm of global e-commerce powerhouse JD.com, to establish a major logistics hub within the Abu Dhabi Airports Free Zone (ADAFZ).

The partnership will see the

development of two advanced warehouse facilities—one bonded and one non-bonded—covering a combined gross floor area of over 70,000sqm. Located in the ADAFZ Logistics Park, the new development marks JDP’s first logistics infrastructure project in the UAE and is set to become a major destination for regional

e-commerce and cargo distribution.

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, said the joint venture underpins the Emirate’s strategy of positioning itself as a global logistics and trade gateway. “We are creating a dynamic ecosystem that will attract investment, create growth opportunities, and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s role in global supply chains,” she said.

The announcement highlights Abu Dhabi’s growing confidence in being a player in global logistics, particularly in the high-growth e-commerce space. The facility will be strategically located with proximity to airport operations and multimodal transport infrastructure, allowing it to serve as a high-efficiency hub.

TRUMP SPAT HIT TESLA SALES, T&FME TOLD

MANUFACTURERS

According to Josh Gilbert, Market Analyst at eToro, initially, there was initially optimism following Trump’s “very good” call with China’s Xi Jinping, which revived hopes of trade negotiations progressing last month. However, the market quickly changed its focus to the Trump/Musk spat that unfolded via social media, sending Tesla shares tumbling 13% overnight.

This will provide a hit to overall market sentiment, particularly tech, but may

not be something longlasting other than for Tesla.

“They’ve already had a pretty terrible start to the year, surrendering their EV crown to BYD and losing market share globally, so this political punch is only going to put downside pressure on Tesla shares,” Gilbert shares with T&FME. “The EV slowdown hit hard, but being in the political firing line adds a new layer of risk for Tesla investors.”

Despite the noise, global equities remain elevated after

a strong run since April. But that momentum faces a test. Tariff tensions and political risk continue to cloud the outlook, and for the rally to continue, investors will need clarity on trade and policy, both of which remain elusive for now.

“With so much uncertainty in markets, we continue to see a compelling case for keeping long-term exposure to gold. Over the long term, it offers stability against risk events while providing a reliable longer-term store of value.

Designed to raise awareness in an engaging and informative way, the video plays on the contrast between “fake” and “real” communications — using artificial intelligence to simulate scam content alongside authentic Aramex branding.

The social media-driven initiative comes as parcel delivery scams and phishing attempts continue to rise across major markets including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Fraudsters posing as Aramex have been targeting customers via SMS, email, and social media, often attempting to collect fake delivery payments or harvest personal data.

“With scams targeting our industry growing in volume and sophistication, traditional awareness methods simply weren’t cutting through the noise. With our edutaining awareness content, we hope customers can identify the scammers’ red flags,” said Mike Rich, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Aramex.

“We adopted AI for the creatives in a classic case of fighting fire with fire, to expose these fakes and frauds. While our campaign specifically protects Aramex customers, it is a broader public service initiative relevant across all industries, as fraudulent communication tactics remain consistent regardless of the targeted brand.”

UAE hosts global debut for Land Cruiser LC300 Hybrid

THE MOST POWERFUL LAND CRUISER TO DATE ARRIVES OFFERING A 20% INCREASE IN TORQUE AND A 40% IMPROVEMENT IN ACCELERATOR RESPONSE

Al-Futtaim Toyota has officially launched the Land Cruiser LC300 Hybrid, introducing the first-ever hybrid model of the iconic SUV to global audiences — with the UAE proudly selected as the debut market.

This electrified evolution of the Land Cruiser underscores Toyota’s growing commitment to carbon neutrality, combining legendary durability and off-road power with advanced hybrid performance, claims Al-Futtaim Toyota.

Launched at a time when the UAE intensifies efforts towards its Net Zero 2050 strategy, the arrival of the hybrid Land Cruiser aligns with regional sustainability goals while reinforcing the enduring

bond between the Middle East and Toyota’s most celebrated 4x4. Since 1951, the Land Cruiser has earned a reputation for navigating the world’s harshest environments — a legacy now enhanced through electrification.

“Since its original launch in 2021, the fully remodelled Land Cruiser 300 Series has been so well received across the seven emirates, and we are deeply grateful for the continued support of Al-Futtaim Toyota’s valued customers,” said Jacques Brent, Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Toyota & Lexus. “As the nation’s drive towards a carbon-neutral society accelerates, driven by the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy,

we recognised the importance of offering electrified vehicle options across our range of vehicles now including our flagship Land Cruiser.

“We are extremely excited to introduce this key milestone to the Emirates, a nation whose valuable feedback has helped shape the model’s development over seven decades. This is only the beginning of our journey with Toyota, as we work together with them to bring the ultimate electric off roader to our customers in the UAE, continuously evolving it further with their insights and experiences.”

At the heart of the new model is a parallel hybrid system combining a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with an electric motor,

resulting in a combined output of 457hp and 790Nm of torque. The result is the most powerful Land Cruiser to date — offering a 20% increase in torque and a 40% improvement in accelerator response compared to its conventional petrol counterpart. Despite this performance boost, the hybrid model maintains the series’ trusted reliability and toughness across challenging terrains.

The hybrid drivetrain has been engineered for fail-safe operation even in remote areas. In the unlikely event of hybrid system failure, the vehicle can still be operated using the internal combustion engine alone. To ensure off-road resilience, the

Steering (EPS) improves manoeuvrability at low speeds and enhances steering feel during off-road driving, while a built-in 1500W AC inverter provides direct 220V power for camping, outdoor tools, or remote workstations.

Held at AAC’s Renault showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, the event marked not only the local debut of the revamped Koleos but also the launch of Studio R, a new platform that aims to redefine the traditional showroom experience. Combining elements of music, art, and culture, Studio R is part of AAC’s push to transform automotive retail into a more dynamic and immersive community engagement space.

The launch was powered by Emirates Coffee Co. and featured beats from Dubai’s No Filter DXB collective, creating an energetic setting for the reveal of Renault’s updated midsize SUV.

“Introducing the new Renault Koleos to local markets reflects our commitment to investing in what matters most to people across the UAE: design that inspires, technology that simplifies, and a level of comfort that meets market expectations,” said Hussam Baghdadi, Senior Director at Arabian Automobiles Company.

“This model embodies Renault’s emphasis on aesthetics, offering

more interior space and a distinctive road presence. ‘Think Wider’ is our invitation to customers to explore new possibilities in style, performance, and the way they experience every drive.”

Baghdadi added that the coffee rave symbolised AAC’s confidence in the market and intent to challenge automotive norms.

“To celebrate this milestone, we introduced the UAE’s first-ever coffee rave inside a car showroom, a bold move that underscores our confidence in the market and our commitment to go beyond the conventional.

“The event paid tribute to Renault’s legacy and forward-thinking spirit, while introducing Studio R, a platform that transforms the showroom into a hub where culture, creativity, and community come together.”

DON’T BE A

STRANGER TO

THE OUTLANDER

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander now delivers value and versatility below the AED 100K

Mark

It’s not every day you step into a seven-seater SUV that feels more premium than its price tag suggests – especially when that tag has just dipped below the AED 100,000 mark. Starting at prices from AED 99,995, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander represents tempting value for UAE drivers and fleet buyers alike.

When T&FME was handed the keys for a test drive of the GLX trim, we were curious: could this now sub-100k SUV really tick the boxes for comfort, performance,

practicality – and fleet viability?

The short answer? Absolutely.

First impressions: assertive, but not over the top

At first glance, the 2025 Outlander makes a confident impression. Mitsubishi’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ front grille is bold without being aggressive, and the updated LED headlights and sculpted body lines give it a sleeker, more aerodynamic profile than previous generations. Our test model, finished in a sharp black with metallic

chrome edges, sat on 20-inch alloy wheels that added a nice touch of athleticism.

Sliding into the cabin, it was immediately clear that Mitsubishi has taken a leap forward in terms of interior quality. Softtouch materials, well-contoured seats, and an intuitive centre console layout greeted us. The stitched detailing on the dash and doors added to the upmarket feel – not something you’d expect at this price point.

On the road: smooth and sure-footed Our route took us from Sheikh Zayed

Road into the more open stretches beyond Bottom-of-the-Stick on Al Qudra and into the desert. The Outlander’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with an 8-speed CVT, was responsive enough for city cruising and had more than enough grunt for overtaking.

It’s not the quickest SUV in its segment, but it felt stable and composed enough –especially during some spirited stretches. The lack of pouty raw performance could disappoint some, but its weaknesses are actual strengths for fleet buyers, and the

Outlander really impressed with its ride comfort and low noise levels. Really this is a vehicle you can be happy to drive for hours. The suspension soaked up bumps with surprising grace, and the cabin remained quiet even at higher speeds. Steering was light but accurate – ideal for navigating tight parking spaces or tackling the worst of the UAE’s traffic snarls.

Family-friendly – and fleet-ready?

With three rows of seating, the Outlander isn’t just about getting from A to B –

it’s about doing it with people in tow. The second row offers ample legroom, and the third row, while best reserved for children or shorter journeys, adds valuable flexibility. Fold down both rows, and you’ve got a spacious flat cargo area that easily handled our camera gear, bags and even a foldable bike.

Mitsubishi’s infotainment system features a responsive 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support – both seamlessly integrated during our drive. Dual-zone climate control kept everyone cool, and rear-seat vents were a welcome feature in the June heat.

For fleet operators, these features are more than creature comforts – they’re practical essentials that can help keep drivers focused, passengers content, and total cost of ownership in check.

Safety and support where it counts

The 2025 Outlander doesn’t cut corners on safety, either. Standard features include Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert – tech that gives both drivers and fleet managers peace of mind.

Speaking of peace of mind, Habtoor Motors – Mitsubishi’s official distributor in the UAE – is making a serious push in the fleet space. Through its Fleet & Business programme, Habtoor offers flexible purchase solutions, comprehensive aftersales support, and a dedicated account manager to oversee everything from service intervals to fleet health.

That kind of service can make a real difference for corporate buyers, particularly in industries where uptime is critical and cost efficiency drives decision-making.

Verdict: a savvy, segment-smart SUV

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander may not wear an ultra-luxury badge, but it delivers a driving experience that punches well above its weight. Starting from just under AED 100,000, you can get a well-equipped, family- and fleet-friendly SUV backed by one of the region’s most established dealership networks.

For individuals, it’s a compelling personal car. For fleet buyers, it’s a strategic investment. And after a full week of driving through urban traffic, open roads and even a short off-road trail we handed back the keys feeling one thing above all: impressed.

A TRIPLE ROW TREAT

FEELING SUPER

Sayed Ahbab talks to T&FME about Scania’s R500 Super and Al Shirawi’s Strategic Edge

With over two decades of unwavering dedication to Al Shirawi Enterprises and more than 25 years in the commercial vehicle sector, Sayed Ahbab is one of the most respected voices in the UAE trucking industry. Currently serving as the Deputy Director of Sales for Commercial Vehicles, Ahbab’s journey from Sales Engineer to one of Scania’s key advocates in the region is marked by a deep understanding

of market dynamics, strong customer relationships, and technical mastery.

In this exclusive interview, T&FME speaks with Ahbab about the evolution of the ScaniaAl Shirawi partnership, the regional rollout of the groundbreaking R500 Super truck, and how customer expectations are being reshaped by (TCO) total cost of ownership, fuel efficiency, and advanced aftersales solutions.

Four Decades of Partnership

“The partnership between Scania and Al Shirawi Enterprises, which was forged

The Scania Super delivers long-term savings”

in 1981, is a testament to shared values and strategic vision,” says Ahbab.

That collaboration has not only stood the test of time, but it has evolved to become a benchmark for premium heavy truck operations in the region.

“We worked very hard to establish Scania as a heavy truck market leader in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, consistently demonstrating exceptional sales and after-sales support including pioneering Scania’s Dealer Operating Standards (DOS) certification outside Europe. Our deep

local market knowledge and commitment to comprehensive customer solutions helped us in establishing SCANIA brand in UAE. We focused not just on vehicle sales but also extensive services like driver training and fleet management ensuring high uptime and profitability for our clients across various key industries.”

Al Shirawi was the first Scania dealer outside Europe to achieve Dealer Operating Standards (DOS) certification, reflecting their commitment to quality. The dealership’s integrated approach — combining vehicle sales with fleet management, driver training, and technical support — has been instrumental in positioning Scania as a trusted brand in the UAE’s transport and logistics landscape.

Scania’s long-anticipated Super powertrain made its regional debut with the R500 Super, a next-generation longhaul truck that sets new standards for performance and efficiency. “We started taking orders for the Scania R500 Super in the UAE market from October 2024 with deliveries starting from February, following its acclaimed global launch,” Ahbab confirms.

The R500 Super has quickly gained a reputation as a game-changer, boasting fuel savings of up to 8% over the previous generation. “Its exceptional fuel efficiency is key to controlling operational costs, especially given the long distances traveled here,” he adds. “Since its launch in the region, the Scania Super Powertrain has indeed delivered remarkably on its promise of improved fuel efficiency and performance in real-world fleet conditions. Our customers across the UAE are consistently reporting significant reductions in fuel consumption, often aligning with or even surpassing the projected 8% fuel saving that the Super powertrain was designed to achieve – a substantial gain over Scania’s already highly efficient previous generation.”

Under the hood, the new 13-litre engine also delivers 500hp and high torque at impressively low RPMs — essential for desert conditions and long-haul loads. Coupled with the new Scania Opticruise G33 gearbox, the R500 Super delivers smooth shifting, optimised cooling, and long-term driveline durability. “These attributes contribute to superior uptime and total cost of ownership,” notes Ahbab, “making it a highly attractive proposition for operators demanding reliability and profitability in the GCC’s demanding transport environment.”

Fleet operators are experiencing not just lower fuel bills, but also enhanced operational stability”

Real-World Results

According to Ahbab, the Super powertrain is more than just a marketing promise — it’s delivering tangible benefits in real fleet operations.

The truck’s ability to maintain torque at low RPMs means fewer gear changes and reduced wear on components.

He explains: “Fleet operators are experiencing not just lower fuel bills, but also enhanced operational stability and reduced stress on driveline components, collectively translating into a demonstrably lower total cost of ownership and higher profitability for their businesses.”

The feedback from the people who spend the most time behind the wheel has been equally compelling. “Drivers consistently highlight the effortless performance,” says Ahbab. “They note

how the abundant torque from the new 13-litre engine allows them to maintain consistent speeds, even with maximum payloads, and tackle gradients with ease.”

Comfort is another standout. “The R-cab continues to receive praise for its spacious, quiet, and ergonomically designed interior, which greatly reduces driver fatigue on long-haul routes.” Uptime is also a critical metric, and one where the R500 Super shines. “Enhanced fuel efficiency translates to fewer refueling stops, and the inherent reliability, backed by Scania’s robust engineering and our comprehensive service support, ensures vehicles spend more time on the road generating revenue.”

Market Trends: Shifting Focus to TCO

With logistics expansion and infrastructure megaprojects driving demand, Ahbab sees sustained growth for premium long-haul trucks

A SHARED VISION
The partnership between Scania and Al Shirawi Enterprises, which was forged in 1981, is a testament to shared values and strategic vision, says Sayed Ahbab, Deputy Director of Sales for Commercial Vehicles, Al Shirawi Enterprises.

in the UAE. “The UAE’s ambitious economic diversification plans, coupled with ongoing projects like ports, airports, and the Etihad Rail network, are creating a robust environment for logistics growth,” he explains. “The booming e-commerce sector only adds to that demand.”

He believes fleet owners are increasingly focused on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than sticker price. “Premium trucks like the R500 Super, which offer unparalleled fuel efficiency, extended uptime, and superior driver comfort, are now seen as long-term investments rather than high-cost liabilities.”

So far, the heaviest demand has come from sectors where durability and performance matter most.

“We have observed the strongest interest primarily from the heavy haulage segment and the tipper trailer segment within the construction and infrastructure sectors,” says Ahbab. The R500’s torque-rich engine and rugged frame make it ideal for navigating off-road construction sites while still handling high-speed regional transport requirements.

Fuel Efficiency Meets Sustainability

“With global fuel costs remaining a prominent operational expense, customers are increasingly looking beyond the initial purchase price,” Ahbab says. “They now meticulously evaluate the entire lifecycle cost of a truck.”

To support this shift in customer mindset, Al Shirawi offers guaranteed buy-back programs and long-term repair and maintenance contracts. These tools give fleet managers clarity and confidence. “Predictable operational costs allow them to accurately calculate their true running expenses and TCO over the vehicle’s lifespan.”

After-Sales and Training Support

Al Shirawi has built a service infrastructure tailored to the demands of Scania’s premium vehicles. A major part of that support revolves around driver training — an often-overlooked component of fleet performance. “We provide this training complimentary at the time of delivery, followed by a crucial reinforcement session approximately three months later,” he says.

Using Scania’s in-built Fleet Management System, driver behaviour is tracked and analysed, with follow-up training offered where needed. “This ensures optimal driving habits and helps fleets unlock the full fuelsaving potential of the Super powertrain.”

For peace of mind, Al Shirawi also offers five-year repair, and maintenance contracts and operates mobile service vans to provide servicing at customer premises — even on holidays.

A GAME-CHANGER
The R500 Super has quickly gained a reputation as a game-changer, boasting fuel savings of up to 8% over the previous generation.

Expanding Infrastructure

Enhanced fuel efficiency translates to fewer refueling stops”

Al Shirawi is also scaling its physical footprint to meet rising demand. “We are actively adding new workshops at strategic locations,” Ahbab confirms. Scania’s global support has been pivotal in certifying technicians and ensuring full availability of spare parts — minimising downtime and enhancing vehicle uptime across the fleet.

The Scania R500 Super is not just efficient — it’s powerful. “Its 13-litre engine produces 2650 Nm of torque from just 900 RPM, allowing it to effortlessly handle heavy tipper

payloads,” says Ahbab. The redesigned driveline is also lighter, increasing usable payload.

Inside the cab, comfort and safety are paramount. “Scania’s cabs are among the safest in the world, exceeding Sweden’s tough crash regulations. The new Scania Smart Dashboard is intuitive, helping drivers access all critical information with minimal distraction.”

Debunking the Myths

Ahbab is quick to challenge some of the misconceptions around Scania’s performance.

“When comparing Scania Super trucks with other European or Asian OEM offerings in the same segment, one of the biggest misconceptions customers may have revolves around engine size and fuel consumption. There’s often a lingering belief that a larger engine automatically translates to higher fuel consumption. This is simply not true for the Scania Super,” he says. The ECU-controlled (Engine Control Unit) engine only injects the fuel needed for optimal combustion — balancing power with efficiency.

He also notes that while some competitors promote low purchase prices, long-term value still wins out. “The Scania Super delivers longterm savings through superior fuel efficiency, extended uptime, and durable components. The advanced ECU intelligently assesses factors like load, speed, and road gradient to precisely inject only the necessary amount of fuel for optimal combustion, ensuring

exceptional efficiency despite its power.

“Another misconception, particularly when comparing with some Asian OEMs, might be a sole focus on initial purchase price. However, customers are increasingly sophisticated and have correctly shifted their focus to Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The Scania Super’s proven technologies, especially demonstrated in the demanding Middle East market, deliver significant long-term savings through superior fuel efficiency, extended uptime, and durable components. This makes the Scania Super a far more economically viable and profitable investment over its lifespan, rather than just considering the upfront cost.”

New Variants and Technologies

Scania isn’t done yet. A new 11-litre Super engine is on the way to the UAE market, designed for 6x4 and 4x2 chassis. “It’s ideal for customers needing a lighter, yet still powerful solution for rigid applications,” says Ahbab. “Scania is continuously evolving its product portfolio to meet diverse market needs, and we are very excited about the upcoming introduction of more variants from the Scania Super series to the UAE market. Specifically, Scania is now introducing the 11-litre Super engine, which will be available in the market very shortly. This new engine option is a strategic addition, as it’s perfectly suited for rigid 6x4 and 4x2 chassis configurations. “It will offer customers a lighter, yet highly

fuel-efficient and powerful solution, ideal for applications that require a balance of payload capacity and maneuverability, bridging the gap in our current Super engine offerings. This expansion demonstrates Scania’s commitment to providing an optimised powertrain for every type of operation, ensuring that more customers can benefit from the Super’s leading fuel economy and performance in their specific transport segments.”

In terms of sustainability, the R500 Super is already compatible with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and biodiesel, aligning with the UAE’s environmental goals. “It allows our customers to leverage renewable fuels as infrastructure develops,” he explains.

As for the future, Scania is also looking at electrification, hybridisation, and even autonomous solutions. “The UAE’s forwardthinking stance on smart and autonomous technologies makes it a highly relevant market,” Ahbab notes. “The R500 Super, with its advanced connectivity features and robust platform, lays the groundwork for integrating future autonomous capabilities.”

The Scania R500 Super is a vital component of Scania’s long-term strategy for the UAE, serving as a foundational bridge for sustainable transport solutions, he adds.

“While it represents our most fuel-efficient combustion engine offering to date, drastically reducing current operational costs and emissions, Scania globally maintains a multi-

pronged approach towards a sustainable future, aligning with the UAE’s progressive vision.

“Regarding alternative fuels, the R500 Super’s engines are fully compatible with HVO and FAME biodiesels. This provides an immediate and significant pathway for CO2 reduction, especially as the UAE pushes for wider availability of B5 biodiesel by 2026. This compatibility ensures our customers can leverage renewable fuels as infrastructure develops.

“For hybrid technology, while the R500 Super is designed for long-haul conventional operations, Scania’s broader portfolio includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) primarily for urban and regional distribution. These solutions are crucial stepping stones in our global roadmap towards full electrification, demonstrating that a mix of technologies will co-exist during the energy transition.

“Finally, in autonomous trucking, Scania is a leader in developing and deploying selfdriving solutions, particularly in controlled environments like mining and hub-to-hub logistics. The UAE’s forward-thinking stance on smart and autonomous technologies makes it a highly relevant market for future developments. The R500 Super, with its advanced connectivity features and robust platform, implicitly lays the groundwork for integrating future autonomous capabilities as the technology matures and regulations evolve.”

IN THE MARKET THE NIO POWER

Mohammed Maktari talks to Stephen White on why battery swapping is just the start of NIO’s charge in the region

At the heart of Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, a new chapter in electric mobility has quietly taken shape. Cars have started rolling in through the gates and then with a push of an on-screen button are reversing themselves into a small garage-like building. As they fix into position, a suite of AI cameras and autonomous machines set about carefully replacing the electric battery array underneath. Three minutes later, the car tells the driver it is ready to be driven to its next destination. Nearby, buyers are venturing into the sleek, minimalist NIO House on Al Maryah Island.

It would not be unfair to say that NIO already has a strategic foothold in what could be a transformative journey for the region’s EV landscape despite its relatively recent arrival into the market.

Behind the wheel of the Chinese mobility expert’s journey in the region is automotive veteran Mohammed Maktari, CEO of NIO MENA, whose 35-year career across global brands now converges with one of China’s most disruptive electric vehicle players.

“The opening of NIO’s Ready Swap Station in Abu Dhabi is a proof of concept,” explains Maktari. “It’s early days, but it’s the first step to changing how people view vehicle ownership, energy infrastructure, and fleet viability in the Middle East.”

Battery Swapping: Fast, Tested, Secure

Unlike traditional EVs that rely on fixed charging infrastructure, NIO’s approach is built around its patented battery swap stations. These automated hubs allow users to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in as little as three to five minutes.

“There’s absolutely nothing to wonder,” Maktari says. “The swap can be as little as three minutes. The system checks the VIN number, verifies that the car is eligible, and the gates open — if you’re on what we call the VIP list.”

The battery swap concept drew me in from the start”

Each station, outfitted with cameras and safety checks, also conducts an undercarriage inspection to ensure there’s no damage before proceeding with a swap. “If there’s a sign of undercarriage damage, the station will abort the swap and ask the customer to contact us.”

It’s a process backed by scale and experience. “I think the last count was 75 million battery swaps a few days ago,” he adds. “Every possible configuration— legal or illegal—has been tried.”

Proven Technology, New Market

Though new to the UAE, NIO’s battery swap technology has evolved through several iterations. “We’re now at version four, and version five is due soon. Each update reflects our expanding model range. We’re not just a Chinese brand — we are a premium EV manufacturer.”

The technology fixes a major issue with EV ownership, its Return of Investment (RoI). Battery swapping has been compared to replacing your engine, and while that isn’t entirely true it does provide obvious scope to keep your car performing at an optimum level for years to come.

Other manufacturers are taking note, says Maktari, as he predicts that the technology will be adopted by other brands. Convincing customers of that fact, however, remains a work in progress.

“You still see segmentation in the region: Japanese, European, Chinese. But the reality is, our performance is on par with the Audi e-tron or BMW iX,” insists Maktari. “During COVID, while other manufacturers were struggling with their P&Ls, Chinese

manufacturers focused on R&D. And by late 2022, they came out swinging with new technologies and products.”

UAE Line-up and What’s Next NIO’s current offering in the UAE includes three premium models: the EC6 coupeSUV, the EL6 mid-size SUV, and the flagship EL8 full-size SUV, which Maktari describes as “our top-of-the-range, all-wheel drive model, now fine-tuned for this market.”

Each vehicle has been tested extensively in regional conditions. “Before we launched,

Honestly, once you’ve driven an electric, you can’t go back”

the factory sent a whole team of engineers here a year in advance. They ran the cars through UAE summers and made adjustments, especially around battery cooling and thermal performance,” says Maktari. “For the EL8, we even introduced a desert mode. I’ve personally driven it in the dunes—it performs extremely well.”

Looking ahead, NIO plans to introduce more models from its global portfolio, including the compact Firefly and the fleet-oriented Onvo brand, though both are targeted for arrival post-2027. “Firefly is

more suited to the Levant and North Africa — think Golf-sized vehicles, not really big in the Gulf. But Onvo is exciting. It’s our subbrand aimed at mass mobility and will be priced for fleet deployment, including taxis.”

Reinventing the fleet wheel

NIO’s possible entry into the fleet space won’t come through its current premium vehicles, but through infrastructure — and eventually, dedicated products.

“Right now, NIO vehicles are too expensive for the taxi market,” says Maktari.

NIO’s current offering in the UAE includes three premium models: the EC6 coupe-SUV, the EL6 mid-size SUV, and the flagship EL8 full-size SUV.

“But once Onvo launches, we’ll have a compelling offer. And even before that, the battery swap station itself could change the economics for fleet operators.”

Traditional fleets often rely on overnight or supercharger solutions, which place heavy demands on grid infrastructure.

“Superchargers are not as simple as they look. Behind that 350kW charger is an entire ecosystem—huge cables, substations, transformers. It’s expensive and disruptive,” he explains.

In contrast, NIO’s swap stations offer a smarter, more flexible solution. “Each station can charge up to 21 batteries overnight at lower tariffs. In the morning, they’re ready to go. As taxis rotate in and out, the used batteries are recharged and recycled through the day.”

And it’s not just speed and convenience—it’s about safety and longevity too. “Swapping gives you new battery performance even on day 2,900 of ownership. It also takes a load off the grid, offers thermal management, and even includes a safety mechanism that drops overheating batteries into a water bath in case of thermal runaway.”

While Abu Dhabi was chosen as the regional launchpad — thanks to its financial investment in NIO and its innovation-first agenda—Saudi Arabia remains a key growth target.

“Saudi is unique. It’s a huge market, close to one million annual car sales. But

DRAWN IN BY THE TECHNOLOGY
Industry veteran Mohammed Maktari says it was NIO’s drive quality and unique technology that drew him to take the role as
MENA’s CEO “from the start.”
We want to be able to say: you can drive from Dubai to Jeddah and not worry”

the premium segment is just half the size of the UAE’s,” says Maktari. “So while the volume is attractive, the luxury EV space is more niche. That’s why we’re taking a two-pronged approach—one strategy for vehicle distribution and another for power infrastructure.”

Ultimately, the vision is regional. “We want to be able to say: you can drive from Dubai to Jeddah, or Beirut, and not worry. Just swap your battery along the way.”

To realise that, NIO is forming alliances with other Chinese manufacturers, encouraging them to adopt its batteryswapping tech. “When other brands

use the same infrastructure, that’s when the machine really goes ka-ching.”

Brand Building and Regional Identity

Building a premium Chinese brand in a crowded Middle East market is no small feat. “A lot of Chinese brands that fail to scale are the ones without regional offices. We’re doing the opposite. NIO MENA is here to stay.”

With a diverse Abu Dhabi-based team, multilingual communication, and a growing network of partners, NIO is laying the groundwork for a brand that understands the region’s complexity.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all. Jordan is strong on EVs because of excess power. Lebanon has solar everywhere but no credit. Egypt is massive, but has infrastructure constraints. You’ve got to be smart, adaptive, and deeply embedded in these markets.”

A Passion-Fuelled Career

For Maktari, who grew up dismantling bicycles and tuning V8s, this EV chapter is less of a pivot than a continuation.

“I’ve done petrol, diesel, manufacturing, distribution. This is a new learning. The tech is phenomenal. The ride quality is extraordinary. And the battery swap concept—well, that’s what drew me in from the start.”

He adds with a smile, “Honestly, once you’ve driven an electric, you can’t go back. And once you see what this system can do, you’ll wonder why we ever did it any other way.”

Sustainable tourism is increasingly important to travellers seeking memorable trips and authentic experiences while minimising environmental impact. Efficient public transport links are essential, helping to reduce car dependence and to enhance community engagement.

Tourist destinations that are to be transformed into eco-conscious hubs require integrated infrastructure, forward-thinking government policy and a collective shift in

mindset from residents and tourists alike.

Dubai is well-known for its rapid expansion and visionary leadership and is actively pursuing sustainable tourism through its strategic public transport development.

The Dubai Metro, a lower-emission transport option, connects key tourist and residential areas and is estimated to have saved about one billion car journeys since its launch in 2009 according to the Roads and Transport Authority. The Dubai Metro has been credited with reducing carbon

Effective, accessible public transport is vital”

emissions by an estimated 2.6m tonnes. Initiatives like the new Dubai Metro line extensions and the deployment of new electric buses underscore this commitment.

Dubai has also recently launched the ‘Dubai Can’ initiative, promoting refillable water bottles, reducing the need for singleuse plastic and addressing the significant environmental concern of plastic waste. Beyond the Metro, the tram and water taxi systems contribute to a comprehensive, integrated public transport network.

Tools of the Trade Technology is a vital tool in sustainable travel, mitigating the effects of climate change on tourism and finding new and more efficient ways for tourism to operate with a reduced carbon footprint. Mobile applications, for example, provide, real-time information improving traveller convenience and reducing the need for printed schedules. Contactless payments and integrated ticketing streamline this process further. With new electric bus fleets added to the streets of Dubai, smart city technologies like traffic management systems (TMS) help to reduce congestion and optimise operations.

Real-time data analysis tools minimise traffic delays and fuel consumption and allow for dynamic traffic adjustments.

Dubai’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by solar-powered bus shelters that provide respite from the heat for commuters. The emirate has also announced plans to explore autonomous vehicles, revolutionising transport and reducing emissions.

Guests travelling to Dubai are encouraged to utilise public transport links to explore local neighbourhoods. When it comes to short-term rentals, we recommend that property owners provide information about local transport links, helping support guests who are interested in sustainable travel.

Driving Sustainable Tourism

The future of Dubai’s sustainable tourism industry is hinged on technological integration and ongoing public transport development. Continuous infrastructure investment is essential, especially in tourist hotspots. Public transport use can also be incentivised by policies like congestion charges and dedicated pedestrian zones. Awareness and education campaigns are also useful tools to promote sustainable travel. Effective, accessible public transport is vital for building a sustainable tourism industry that reduces its carbon footprint, while encouraging visitors to explore the emirate’s diverse offerings. This isn’t just about infrastructure, this is about creating a forward-thinking mobility ecosystem that aligns with Dubai’s ambition to be a global leader in sustainable urban development. By prioritising the public transport system with the metro, tram, bus and water taxi services, Dubai can minimise reliance on private vehicles, and effectively reduce carbon emissions.

The seamless integration of sustainable practices across all sectors of Dubai’s tourism industry is key to its long-term success”

Dubai’s integration of cutting-edge technology into its urban development signals its commitment to sustainable growth, offering a global model for responsible city planning. Promoting sustainable tourism which extends beyond transportation with the ‘Dubai Can’ demonstrates that even small changes can have a significant impact on reducing environmental waste. By promoting the usage of refillable water bottles across the city and placing water refill stations across busy hotspots, tourists are encouraged not to use single-use plastic bottles and be mindful of their plastic pollution.

Beyond the ‘Dubai Can’, the city’s sustainable tourism initiatives also include the development of extensive cycling routes and pedestrian-friendly zones to promote active transport, the adoption of innovative technologies such as vertical farming and increased investment in green spaces and urban parks to improve air quality.

What’s more, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) Stamp was also launched recently by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism. Recognising hotels that adhere to stringent sustainability requirements, including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and staff engagement.

With a tiered recognition system of Gold, Silver, and Bronze, the DST Stamp incentivises hotels to continuously improve their environmental practices, aligning with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy. By establishing clear benchmarks and promoting transparency, this initiative not only enhances Dubai’s reputation as a sustainable destination but also encourages the tourism sector to contribute to the emirate’s broader environmental goals.

Dubai’s plans for sustainable mobility also include an extensive cycling network with dedicated bike lanes and shared cycling schemes for tourists and residents to use. Shaded walkways and pedestrian-friendly zones also encourage people to explore Dubai on foot.

The seamless integration of sustainable practices across all sectors of Dubai’s tourism industry is key to its long-term success. By investing in efficient public transport, promoting active travel, creating green spaces, and embracing sustainable technologies, Dubai is creating a blueprint for responsible tourism development. This dedication to sustainability benefits both the environment and the visitor experience, solidifying Dubai’s position as a forwardthinking and eco-conscious destination.

TECHNOLOGICAL INTEGRATION

The future of Dubai’s sustainable tourism industry is hinged on technological integration and ongoing public transport development, says Anna Skigin.

LET’S TALK TRENDS

T&FME previews the latest episode of the Let’s Talk Trends podcast, brought to you by Caltex Lubricants, and how technology, maintenance, and AI are transforming logistics operations

In the latest episode of the Let’s Talk Trends podcast, brought to you by Caltex Lubricants, host Stephen White explores how fleet and logistics leaders are navigating today’s most pressing operational challenges — from artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance to infrastructure constraints and sustainability mandates. Featuring expert insights from Zain Paracha (Head of New Ventures, Emirates Transport), Diana Ali (Arabia

Logistics Excellence Manager, Unilever NAME), and Martin Roberts (Director of Transportation, Momentum Logistics), the panel’s deep-diving conversation reveals how innovation and planning are driving resilience in the transport sector.

Smart Systems, Real Value

Momentum’s Martin Roberts opened the discussion with a look at how his fleet is integrating AI-powered dashcams and simulators to assess and improve driver behaviour.

AI is redefining how we manage fleets”

“We’ve trialled AI dashcams that detect fatigue, smoking, or micro-sleeps. They send alerts directly to our control tower — it’s part of our proactive safety culture,” Roberts explained.

“These systems, paired with telematics, also support our preventative maintenance planning. You can see wear patterns and make smart changes before breakdowns happen.”

From Emirates Transport’s perspective, Zain Paracha emphasised the growing scope of AI within the

industry. “We’re applying it across multiple fronts — predictive maintenance, auction pricing, workshop estimates, and SLA management. AI allows us to pull data globally and act locally with more precision. It’s no longer just a buzzword — it’s redefining how we manage fleets, from operations to aftersales.”

Infrastructure and Investment Pressures

Yet even as smart technology improves visibility, logistics providers are still navigating tough terrain — especially around electrification and charging infrastructure. “If you want to install high-capacity EV chargers, you may need to upgrade the entire substation,” warned Diana Ali. “That’s not just a technical issue — it’s a major capital investment.”

Emirates Transport’s Zain Paracha pointed to the practical promise of two-wheelers.

“They’re easier to electrify, and we’ve deployed a few hundred with battery swapping. But even that requires someone — either the regulator or the operator — to invest in cabinets, cabling, and spare batteries.”

Maintenance and Margins

The panel returned to the importance of maintenance as a lever for cost control and uptime — especially when margins are razor-thin. “We work to OEM specs and sample oil at 30,000km intervals,” said Roberts. “We often change it early, because vehicle uptime is non-negotiable. One unexpected failure can undo all the gains from stretching your oil change.”

Predictive insights have also changed their component replacement strategy. “We started noticing pulleys and belts were failing at a certain mileage — so we now replace them preemptively. It’s a fraction of the cost compared to the damage they cause when they snap. It’s these details that make a real difference to profitability.”

Resilience in a Demanding Sector

All three guests agreed that today’s logistics professionals must be wired for challenge. “You’re firefighting every day,” said Roberts. “It’s never easy, but the key is having systems in place and learning from the data you’re gathering.”

Ali highlighted the emotional investment required to succeed: “I’ve

EVs are a major capital investment”

worked in supply chain for nearly 20 years, and logistics is the most dynamic part of it. It’s high-pressure — but the goal is a greener, more efficient future, and that makes the work worthwhile.”

Paracha added, “Let’s be honest — you need to enjoy the chaos a little bit. What drives me is impact. We’ve seen big disruptions in the last decade, and we’re still just scratching the surface of what’s possible.

“But it only works if technology brings real value.”

Powered by Caltex Lubricants

The episode wrapped with a reminder that the smallest details matter — especially when it comes to lubricants. Caltex Lubricants help fleets extend oil life, reduce maintenance costs, and deliver uptime, supporting transport and logistics operations that simply can’t afford to stop.

EVERY STEP MATTERS

Daimler Truck MEA and RoadSafetyUAE call for industry collaboration to curb commercial road fatalities

RoadSafetyUAE and Daimler Truck Middle East Africa hosted a powerful Commercial Road Safety event last month at the Daimler Training Center in Dubai’s International Media Production Zone (IMPZ) with both calling on the commercial transport sector to take more responsibility in reducing road traffic fatalities across the region.

With commercial vehicles linked to over a third of all traffic deaths in the UAE, the event brought together key industry figures, fleet customers and technology providers to share insights, data, and solutions to

improve road safety performance.

Thomas Edelmann, Founder and Managing Director of RoadSafetyUAE, opened the session with a strong call to action: “We are here to make our voice heard. Every step we take matters.”

Citing official statistics, Edelmann reminded the audience that 34% of traffic fatalities in the UAE involve commercial vehicles. “That is a third of all deaths,” he noted.

Mert Turan, Training Manager at Daimler Truck MEA, led participants on a guided walk-through of the Daimler Training Center, which hosts weekly training sessions for FUSO and Mercedes-Benz Trucks technicians from across the region. “This is where we

We think there is huge potential in the region. And huge potential to save lives”

ensure technical teams are prepared to keep vehicles on the road – and safe,” he said.

Sunil Jaganathan, Head of Service Operations at Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles, Gargash Enterprises issued a reality check to fleet operators: “Every fleet owner thinks they have the best drivers. The reality is that training is essential for all drivers to prevent avoidable failures.”

Technology was also in focus, with Mazen Kalach, Truck Connectivity and Body Builder Manager, showcasing the latest version of Daimler’s Fleetboard system. He explained how its six key services support operational efficiency and proactive maintenance.

Kalach also reminded attendees that

telematics is now mandatory for fleets in the UAE, with KSA to follow in 2027: “The trucking industry is moving towards smarter solutions and telematics for three reasons –operational efficiency, asset management, and enabling data-driven decisions.”

The session also featured a presentation by Pierre-Olivier Chevalier, Managing Director of D11, who introduced the firm’s in-tyre anti-puncture solution aimed at improving tyre performance and longevity, and in turn, on-road safety. Chevalier told the audience that its range of heavy-duty, super heavy-duty and universal tubeless tyre sealants can create 60% fewer flats. It is also rated to work in

-40 to +92 degrees celicius temperatures.

He added that two months of regional testing with a waste management operation had zero failures: “We think there is huge potential in the region. And huge potential to save lives. Never let a flat tyre stop you again.”

From a commercial perspective, Manuel Steven Samuel, Pricing Manager at Daimler Truck MEA, reflected on the company’s longterm approach to safety integration. “When I started in the CV sector, I wondered why not all trucks had all the safety systems possible,” he said. “Today, we are not just looking at the price of one part, we are looking at the entire ecosystem. Our strategy for keeping trucks safe is about making safety both financially

and operationally practical for fleets.”

The event concluded with closing remarks by Fatih Savas, Head of Strategy and Corporate Affairs at Daimler Truck MEA, who captured the core message of the morning: “Better road safety is not possible alone.” He urged greater cooperation between government bodies, fleet owners, manufacturers, and solution providers.

As industry stakeholders mingled at the wrap-up networking session, the shared sentiment was clear: preventing fatalities on the road is a collective responsibility – and it begins with informed decisions, trained personnel, and a commitment to consistent collaboration.

US veteran-led Gulf of America Logistics sets its sights on MAGA businesses GULF HEROES

Anew logistics provider has entered the US Gulf Coast market with a mission to support the region’s booming capital projects sector. Gulf of America Logistics (GOAL), based in Bossier City, Louisiana, aims to offer veteran-led, U.S.-based transport and logistics solutions for large-scale industrial developments.

Founded by managing partner Brent Patterson, a US Navy logistics veteran and former senior vice president at Blue Water Shipping, GOAL enters the market amid surging demand for heavy-lift and specialist transport services.

Patterson believes the Gulf Coast is now one of the most dynamic project regions in North America.

“From hydrogen hubs to carbon capture and refinery expansions, the demand for heavy-lift and specialised transport services is accelerating – and yet there have been very few local solutions providers,” Patterson said. “GOAL is here to fill that gap.”

The company will serve capital project clients across sectors such as petrochemicals, power generation, LNG, and infrastructure, offering services ranging from transportation engineering and feasibility studies to multimodal execution, including barging, trucking, rail and customs clearance.

“Our competitive edge lies in our deep understanding of the Gulf Coast’s physical and regulatory challenges,” Patterson explained.

“We know the impact of hurricanes, tides, and terrain – and we know how to plan around them. That’s essential in reducing risk and ensuring project continuity.”

GOAL is also positioning itself as a key contributor to the U.S. domestic supply chain, aligning with broader ‘America First’ economic goals.

While its primary focus is on U.S.-based capital projects, the company will also offer international 3PL services and multimodal freight solutions through an extended partner network.

“We’re committed to keeping logistics

contracts – and the jobs they support – here in the US,” said Patterson. “There’s a real opportunity to improve project outcomes by offering more responsive, asset-based services that are rooted in local knowledge.”

“There’s clearly a growing America First agenda, and we’re part of that,” Patterson said.

“We want to ensure that logistics contracts –and the jobs that come with them – are staying in the U.S. We’re helping to defragment the supply chain, reduce risk to projects, and deliver value for developers, EPCs and OEMs.”

To enhance its regional capabilities, GOAL is finalising the acquisition of a port facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, and has signed an exclusive agreement to provide asset-based trucking services across the Gulf region.

“Our team brings forwarding, barge, trucking, rail and EPC experience that’s critical to supporting the huge investment going on here in the Gulf,” said Patterson. “And as barge and other asset capacity tightens, we’re ready with solutions.”
