TIME TO LOOK AT THE DISTRIBUTORS

In the vast and dynamic world of construction, there’s a crucial link that often remains unsung — the construction equipment distributors. These unsung heroes play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between manufacturers and end-users, ensuring that the heart of construction sites — the equipment—beats strong and steady.

Think about it: behind every towering skyscraper, every intricate road network, and every modern marvel, there’s an intricate web of construction equipment distributors working tirelessly to ensure that the right tools are in the right hands at the right time.

They are the silent architects of efficiency, the orchestrators of equipment logistics, and the guardians of productivity.

Construction equipment distributors wear many hats.

They are matchmakers, identifying the perfect machinery for each project’s unique demands.

They are problem solvers, swooping in to provide immediate solutions when equipment breaks down, minimising downtime and costly delays. They are educators, imparting knowledge and training to operators on the proper use and maintenance of equipment.

The importance of these distributors extends beyond mere transactions. They build relationships. They become partners in the success of construction endeavors. Their expertise, experience, and dedication create a seamless experience for construction companies and contractors,

enabling them to focus on what they do best—constructing the future.

As we dive into this edition, we pay homage to the unsung heroes—the construction equipment distributors. Through their dedication, commitment, and strategic thinking, they shape the landscape of progress.

This month we also deep dive into how they build relationships both old and new with manufacturers to find out how they are working together to launch and re-launch new brands in the market.

Most of them share a passion for their products but also their customers, and want to prove they can put actions into words.

Here’s to those distributors—the driving forces behind the scenes, ensuring that construction projects roar to life with the power of well-tuned equipment. We salute their unwavering dedication and celebrate their indispensable role in the construction equipment scene.

And for those that are falling short, I’m sure there is a lot to learn and don’t be afraid to do so. Afterall, a strong distribution channel means a strong construction industry, and that can only be a good thing for everyone.

MONEY INTO AI HEAVY EQUIPMENT START-UP

UAE construction equipment market should grow by 6%

The UAE construction equipment market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.20% from 2022-2029, says a new report by Research and Markets. The firm said the growth in the UAE market will be driven by government investment in public infrastructure and projects such as the development of Al Quoz Creative Zone, a master plan to create a cultural and creative destination in Dubai.

Looking at equipment demand, Research and Markets note s the the material-handling segment of construction equipment accounted for the largest UAE construction equipment market share in 2022. In the material handling segment, cranes accounted for the largest share in 2022.

The excavator is used for digging, lifting, earthmoving & drilling. In 2022, the UAE government’s increased investments in

residential buildings, roads, and railways are expected to drive the demand for excavators during the forecast period.

“A few upcoming road construction projects in 2022, like the Etihad Rail construction, are underway and scheduled to complete by mid-2024 and are expected to boost the demand for earthmoving construction machinery in the UAE construction equipment market. Other construction projects, such as the upgradation of the Dubai Transport Link, aim to boost road safety, increase vehicle capacity and cut travel times by more than half,” says the report.

“In 2021, the Crown Prince of Ajman announced a $27.77 million package of infrastructure development projects in the northern emirate. Therefore, the Traffic and Transportation Plan 2030 will accelerate new PPP projects in the sector.”

Fecon LLC, a leading global manufacturer of heavy-duty site preparation attachments and forestry accessories, announces Ray Dalton as the new vice president of aftermarket sales. In this newly created role, Dalton will focus on growing the company’s successful aftermarket business while also developing new solutions and products based on customer and dealer input.

“Fecon clearly understands the importance of aftermarket sales and support,” Dalton said. “It’s what attracted me to Fecon and has been a value that has always been at the heart of any role I served in.”

Wa’ed Ventures, the Kingdom-based venture capital arm of Aramco, announced a strategic investment in Tenderd, a startup specialising in AI-enabled technologies for real-time emissions intelligence.

The platform provides customers with AI-generated insights to increase asset utilisation and reduce emissions, targeting heavy industries such as construction and logistics.

“Our investment in Tenderd reflects our commitment to addressing sustainability challenges facing the industrial sector and providing solutions to decarbonise their operations,” said Fahad Alidi, Managing Director at Wa’ed Ventures.

“Tenderd brings transformational solutions to traditional capitalintensive industries such as energy, construction, and logistics sector by utilising AI-generated insights to increase asset opimisation and reduce emissions.”

Tenderd is backed by top investors, including Y Combinator, Peter Thiel, BECO Capital and Dynamo Ventures. The investment from Wa’ed comes at a Ime when the world is demanding more sustainable pracIces from heavy industries.

Tenderd is serving industries that constitute 40% of global GDP.

These companies spend $2 trillion annually operating capital equipment, but a lack of operational intelligence leads to only 50% utilisation, resulting in an excess of 1 billion tons of CO2 and $500 billion in costs each year.

Tenderd’s technology addresses these issues by providing companies with real-Ime insights to make better operational decisions.

UlImately, this results in cost savings, beaer resource utilisation, and a smaller environmental footprint.

ACCESS PALFINGER MEGARME TAKES ON MIDFIELD TERMINAL CLEANING

MYCRANE: Funding can power next growth phase

online service negates the need to invest time and energy making offline contact with numerous potential suppliers.

In just 18 months, MYCRANE has already launched its service in key global markets, with technical development, sales and marketing all performed in-house.

MYCRANE – the global online platform for the efficient online rental of lifting equipment – has secured a multi-million dollar sum to fund the next phase of its ambitious growth plans.

According to MYCRANE founder and CEO Andrei Geikalo, the substantial financial injection will fund expansion in critical global markets including the USA and Saudi Arabia, where the company will establish its own operations. The Dubai-based and self-

styled digital disruptor raised the finance from private investors as part of a Series A funding round. The capital will also be deployed to accelerate sales and marketing activities around the world, as well as boosting operations in APAC and South Asia, where MYCRANE is already active.

Established in 2021, MYCRANE is designed for contractors and clients in a variety of industries who can quickly and easily rent the lifting equipment they need. The free, easy-to-use

Geikalo commented: “The trust placed in us by our investors will power the next phase of MYCRANE’s growth in the coming 18 months and is an endorsement of our vision to improve the crane rental procurement process, which was outdated and flawed prior to our launch.

“This Series A funding marks a milestone in the MYCRANE story. It will help bring our service to more global markets and allow us to keep innovating for the cranes and construction sector.”

MYCRANE currently has more than 3,000 registered customers, and more than 15,000 cranes available to hire at the platform.

The third terminal of Abu Dhabi’s airport is an architectural tour de force. But the futuristic architecture provides a challenging environment to maintain without specialised services. That is why PALFINGER Megarme was commissioned to assist during the final post construction cleaning and rectification process.

Airport buildings are said to be the cathedrals of the 21st century. Abu Dhabi’s new Midfield Terminal Complex definitely is a proof for this claim.

The in itself impressive Terminal building – which is expected to process up to 80 million passengers each year – culminates in the 50-meter-high Departure Hall, which is largely column-free through the use of span leaning arches.

This unique space poses a range of challenges in construction as well as in maintenance. Challenges that Megarme, a company of the PALFINGER MARINE organisation, says it is most capable of.

MORE EXCAVATORS SOLD AT RITCHIE BROS.’ JUNE AUCTION IN DUBAI

Appetite to buy equipment remained steady at the internationally attended auction, with wheel loaders, crawler tractors, forklifts and backhoes performing particularly strongly. The online auction featured over 1,200 pieces of machinery, trucks, vehicles and other items, and attracted global bidders. “Our online timed auctions make it easy and fun to join. We had 970 attendees from 66 countries. Top bidder countries were the UAE, KSA, India, and the UK,” said Shirin Bazargan, regional operations manager at Ritchie Bros.

RSG announces significant progress on The Red Sea Destination

Significant progress has been made on phase one of The Red Sea Destination according to developer Red Sea Global (RSG). Releasing a comprehensive update on construction progress, the firm said that this month marks six years since project was first announced by His Royal Highness the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman as an international tourist destination as part of the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision.

Now, with The Red Sea’s first three hotels and phase one of the international airport on track to open later this year, its latest construction update reveals the remarkable progress achieved across the destination, including at a further 13 hotels and on the supporting infrastructure, the firm said in a statement.

“We stand at the brink of an extraordinary moment as we prepare to unveil The Red Sea destination to the world. In six years, we have made exceptional progress, creating exquisite resorts and best-in-class, sustainable

infrastructure in a remote location, demonstrating innovation in line with our regenerative approach and commitment to responsible development,” said John Pagano, Group CEO at Red Sea Global. He added, “While the anticipation builds for the opening of our first hotels and the initial phase of our solar powered airport, we are busy working on the rest of phase one. We are ready to deliver countless more extraordinary moments on our journey to positioning Saudi Arabia proudly on the world stage as a must-visit destination.”

Sharing an update on resort construction, RSG said that Desert Rock - a unique mountain resort being built into the rockface - is more than 50% complete overall. The developer notes it has fully excavated and formed the 10 rooms integrated into the mountainside, as well as all 195m of tunnelling.

Major structural and infrastructure works are well advanced, including the construction of the wadi villas, guest hubs, back of house, and other structures, the developer added.

Work is ongoing on all 11 resorts

and infrastructure across Shura Island. Over 100 construction contracts are in place, with a similar number out in the market for tender. RSG continues to maximise use of off-site manufacturing with precast structures progressing rapidly, bathroom pod deliveries underway, and the prefabricated timber structure on the Golf Clubhouse nearing completion. The developer is moving onto beach formation and beautification works which includes the creation of new mangrove habitats in the coming months, the statement explained.

Highlighting progress on Sheybarah Island, RSG pointed out it has installed all 38 stainless steel overwater villas. While the first overwater villa took nine hours to install, the developer perfected this process, so that it now requires less than two hours. The first beach villas have arrived at the island, one of which has successfully been installed. The developer is also making substantial progress on other front and back of house structures and infrastructure.

MARINE CRANES SPARROWS GROUP EXPANDS MIDDLE EAST OPERATIONS WITH $13M CONTRACT WIN

Sparrows, the engineering and maintenance services specialist for the global energy and industrial sectors, has been awarded a major crane replacement contract for a client in the Middle East. The project, which is worth $13m (USD), is expected to last 18 months.

The scope of work will see Sparrows complete all aspects of the engineering required to replace four BOS Liebherr cranes of four offshore platforms, which are beyond their expected operational life.

Sparrows will handle all crane interfaces, installation,

commissioning and testing, as well as engineered lift plans for the removal and installation of the cranes using a lift barge, which is to be supplied by the main contractor, along with the new cranes. The project will be carried out in two phases, with phase one taking place onshore from the company’s Abu Dhabi facility and workshop and phase two offshore.

Charlie Topp, Regional Director – Middle East, India, Caspian and Asia Pacific at Sparrows said: “This is a significant contract win for us. We’ve got an extensive track record in the Middle East, and this contract reflects the confidence

of operators and contractors in the region to utilise our expertise as part of safety critical work.

“As cranes age, it’s vital that maintenance is done to prolong their life, but in instances like this, where ongoing and frequent maintenance is impacting operations, it’s crucial that new infrastructure is deployed.”

While Sparrows will undertake the majority of the scope of work, it has employed a trusted and local partner to undertake structural fabrication, electrical work, public address and general alarm systems, fire and gas systems and telecoms, as part of the full scope of work.

STANDING TALL IN SHARJAH

Raimondi Middle East deployed eight flat-tops for the fast-growing Aljada megaproject, developed by Arada, in Sharjah, UAE.

The machines, erected in April 2023 with the support of the Raimondi Middle East operations team, are participating at the construction of the Sokoon apartment blocks. The jobsite consists of five residential buildings, featuring 482 homes plus commercial space in the Naseej District, Aljada’s cultural neighbourhood.

The four Raimondi MRT111s, one MRT159, and three MRT294s bring the total number of Raimondi machines working on the development to 22.

Onsite for an additional 14 to 16 months approximately, the models were chosen for their technical specifications, as well as the contractor’s requirements and the tight development delivery schedule.

“We opted for cranes with a maximum lifting capacity ranging between 8tn to 14tn, and a maximum lifting speed of 136 m/min,” explained Wael Hasan, Commercial Director, Raimondi Middle East. The larger number of cranes needing installation, paired with the congested nature of the site, required careful evaluation of the site planning and crane positions to avoid overlap, noted Hasan.

The four MRT111s-8tn are all currently working with a jib length of 36m and final heights of 60m and 48m. Boasting versatility in terms of tower height and good performance with respect of load and hoist speeds, the cranes are equipped with a 30kW hoist and drum capacity of 450m, lifting at a maximum speed of 100m/min.

Building on its best-in-category load diagram and on its ease of installation, the MRT159- 8tn has been erected with a jib length of 44m and a 45kW hoist power, allowing the flat-top to lift at a maximum speed of 136m/min with a final height 66 m.

With the same maximum lifting speed of the Raimondi MRT159, the three MRT294s are onsite with a hoisting gear of 73.5kW, a maximum lifting capacity of 14tn and final heights of 54m and 60m. Erected with jib lengths of 36m and 60m, these cranes ensure excellent performances and durability in a variety of climates.

“The Raimondi Middle East operations team will continue supporting the construction of Sokoon buildings by performing monthly maintenance checks, as well as the full cranes climbing procedures as required based on jobsite progression,” Hasan concluded.

Raimondi Middle East is concurrently actively engaged with several key residential developments across the UAE.

PLAYING ITS PART

CMME SITS DOWN WITH PARTS SPECIALIST TVH TO FIND OUT HOW THE COMPANY IS TAKING ITS CUSTOMER-FIRST APPROACH INTO NEW SEGMENTS IN THE REGION

ost machinery and equipment owners and rental firms in the region found themselves struggling throughout the Covid crisis and its aftermath to find the spare parts they needed to keep their operations going. As inventories fell, so did uptimes on machines; making an already difficult situation much harder to handle. Suddenly, the need for reliable and robust support became an essential part of managing your fleet.

Enter TVH, a global spare parts company based in Belgium which provides workshop and warehouse equipment as well as spare parts for forklifts and handling machines, construction machines, agricultural machines, industrial and port equipment globally. Originally founded in 1969 by friends Paul Thermote and Paul Vanhalst it now boasts 5,000 employees and 90 branches worldwide. With a staggering database of over 47 million item numbers, of which more than 930,000 different references are in stock today, TVH is able to supply to customers in more than 182 countries.

Seen as a supplier of high-quality parts, it has created its popular site and list of own-label brands such as TotalSource, CAM attachments, Energic Plus, Bepco, that compare favourably with the OEM lines. Holding tens of millions of spare parts references, TVH can cover more than 650

Mbrands through 7,250 suppliers, and boasts more than 100,000 customers adding up to more than 27,000 orders per day. Its revenue of 1.6 billion euros makes it one of the biggest suppliers of spare parts in the world.

TVH has also been an ever-present spare parts supplier in the Middle East for almost two decades with the firm largely building its reputation here in the material handling sector. Starting off life in the region from a single employee working from their home office in 2005, it has grown organically in that time, year-on-year, and today is represented by an expert team of 17 employees based at its 400m2 office in Sharjah Airport International Free Zone. Minutes from the airport and located in the heart of the UAE, General Sales Manager Serbulent Cilingir, says that TVH is proud to have the capability to serve all countries in the region.

A mechanical engineer with a master’s degree in production engineering obtained from Turkey’s well-respected Yildiz Technical University, Cilingir is an industry veteran having worked for Aksa Power Generation, Perkins, Cummins and JCB. One of the most recent additions to the TVH family in the Middle East, he is bringing this major brand background and knowhow in the fields of production, service and spare parts, at a time the company is proving its value to clients in an ever-increasing number of segments.

“I’ve been in the Middle East since 2016 and am very happy to join TVH Middle East. I am proud to be responsible for the Middle East operations of a company that has an unrivalled business model in the globe,” Cilingir tells CMME, adding that TVH remains committed

GREEN APPROACH THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Sustainability is one of TVH’s strategic building blocks. That means it is fundamental to our business, and so we also have a clear vision about it: “Doing our bit now for future generations.” We have been working on a comprehensive sustainability strategy and are now happy to tell you that we have chosen the themes on which we will further base our sustainability efforts.

As in other companies and organisations, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form the basis for our strategy. The SDGs consist of 17 goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was established by the United Nations in 2015.

After consultation with the GMT, the Board of Directors,

in terms of both supply and sales. This is being closely monitored by our TVH Belgium headquarters, and investments are planned to continue in the coming years.

In terms of the product categories on offer for construction machines, TVH can supply cabin parts, engine parts, filters, windscreen, electrical parts, cooling and radiator parts, hydraulic components and parts, rubber track and undercarriage parts, teeth and adapters, pins and bushings, fuel injection system parts, and many more.

“Work and development in this area continues on the mini excavators, wheel and track skid steer loaders, telehandlers and backhoe loaders, but the developments continue on larger machines. We plan to serve new product ranges and new machine models in the coming years,” he reveals.

The current portfolio can already be viewed online, plugging Middle East customers into TVH’s global supply network.

“We have catalogues which our customers can access the entire product range from our online platforms. Our online shopping portal is far ahead of its competitors and is used by our customers with pleasure. Our customers, who can access pictures, prices and all necessary information of all spare parts from this portal, can receive their own offers and place orders,” he explans adding that the TVH will soon introduce a new e-shop portal in the market, “which is a more advanced and easy-to-use portal. It is highly appreciated for its ease of use.”

With such a strong line-up for material handling equipment, it is unsurprising that the strong local rental scene has already proven to be a valuable source of growth for TVH in the region.

“The rental market is one of the most important market for us,” Cilingir remarks. “There has been significant growth in the rental business for the last five years and we do expect that it will continue to grow organically.

240 customers, 17 suppliers, 220 employees and several other companies, we have chosen six core SDGs and two supporting SDGs to focus on: Good health and wellbeing; Quality education; Affordable and sustainable energy, (8) Fair work and economic growth; Reducing inequality; Responsible consumption and production.

High quality, availability and right pricing is key for rental business and today we have several key rental customers here in the region.”

“Quality means happy customers for us. Happy customers have played the biggest role in the growth of TVH over time. TVH is a company that buys parts from many OEMs and manufacturers around the world. As with all global brands, there are very serious quality stages in purchasing processes. Both our purchasing and quality units carry out this process very sensitively with our suppliers.

The company has made a serious breakthrough in the field of construction equipment globally over the past three and a half years

And TVH really is thinking regionally when it comes to the Middle East, Cilingir explains, adding that the company expects major investment into infrastructure, housing, landscaping, tourism, and aviation in Saudi, UAE and Oman to ensure the company experiences a strong second half of the year. The company will continue to rely on its core strengths, he adds.

“TVH has come to its position with good quality, good prices and fast delivery capabilities. For this reason, it will continue to give the highest level of importance after this point. We give a 1-year warranty for the vast majority of spare parts, for cases originating from the manufacturer. Rarely, there are parts that we guarantee for 6 months. In case of problems with the parts (which can happen with any brand), our customers can create returns. With the return request created, our quality unit conducts inspections. In fact, all parts in the same reference in stock are inspected. If there is a general problem, the relevant quality letter is informed to the customer and the warehouses that have this reference in their stock. Necessary destructions and scraps are made and the right quality product is delivered to the customer.”

FEELING PUMPED ABOUT THE UAE

CMME TALKS TO KCP AND GARGASH ABOUT THEIR NEW PARTNERSHIP IN THE MARKET

Sometimes timing really is everything. In less than a year, South Korean concrete pump specialist KCP has finally started to solidify its position in the UAE market through its partnership with Gargash Motors and General Trading. The partnership brings together the technological expertise of KCP and the strong support network that Gargash is renowned for.

Mahmoud Darras, the sales manager at Gargash explains to CMME that the timing for both firms could not have been better.

“KCP in the past had the opportunity to sell from South Korea directly to customers in the UAE, without having a partner which led to some issues in the aftersales services. Especially through the COVID-19 time, these experiences made KCP decide that they required a strong partnership with a reliable local company to represent the KCP brand,” he says.

“Gargash was also rebuilding its heavy equipment division for 2022 and needed a global and reliable brand to expand their own business. We met each other’s needs. This created a synergy effect, leading to an upgrade of a stronger partnership.”

Since being formed in 2002, KCP has quickly risen through the ranks of a crowded market often dominated by European and Chinese brands.

Now one of the best know pump-makers in its own right globally, KCP runs many branches directly in six countries (Austria, Canada, USA, Japan, Uzbekistan, China) and has partners over the 60 countries. It also continues to diversify and branch out; bringing what it has learned from pump technology into an array of other applications.

“KCP has started to manufacture a new line-up of specialised vehicle technology, and have successfully expanded in the market with industrial vacuum trucks, rescue trucks and fire-fighting trucks,” says KCP’s Hussein Nawas.

“Although we entered the Middle East market a bit later than planned for, we are now ready to promote ourselves more aggressively.”

KCP and Gargash formally began their partnership at the close of 2022. Darras says that the firms have worked quickly to showcase the new line-up to the market.

“Following the partnership’s conclusion end of 2022, Gargash ordered three KCP concrete pumps to the UAE, which arrived in March 2023, and staged a launching ceremony where sales and aftersales training were conducted.

“Customers were invited to see the demonstration of these machines and this was an excellent opportunity to inform our

22 CONCRETE PUMPS AUGUST 2023

customers now that KCP has, after a long absence, returned to the market in a powerful partnership with Gargash group,” he says.

Following this initial launch, much of the remainder of 2023, will see Gargash and KCP focused on continuing to conduct regular customer visits and additional training where and when it is required. The message from both is that KCP is now ready to be a powerful addition to contractor fleets.

Darras adds that bringing KCP into the fold is part of an on-going rebuilding of Gargash’s heavy equipment division which started in 2022: “We met each other’s needs. This created a synergy effect, leading to an upgrade of a stronger partnership.”

South Korean manufacturing is at the forefront of so many industries globally. CMME asks how Korean brands have managed to build such a strong reputation in a relatively short period of time.

“South Korean companies have succeeded at the forefront of innovation and technology in many fields,” says John Lee, director of sales & marketing at KCP. “We are investing a huge sum of money in research and development, leading to create of cuttingedge products and services. Korean brands are well known for their commitment to producing high-quality products that meet international standards. This mentality of quality and reliability has helped them to gain trust and loyalty from consumers all over the world.

“And currently, the global popularity of Korean pop culture (K-Pop), Korean dramas (K-Dramas), and Korean entertainment has also contributed to the growing awareness and popularity of Korean brands around the world. All these factors, combined with a focus on customer satisfaction and continuous improvement, have helped Korean brands establish a strong reputation and become competitive in various industries on the global stage.”

Focusing on KCP, Lee is clear when it comes to the secret of its own success over the past two decades.

“The philosophy of KCP manufacturing is that simple is the best. Therefore, we aim to provide our customers with the most streamlined hydraulic and electrical systems possible. As a result, it has a reputation for being easy and most user-friendly concrete pumps for operators to use. Trouble shooting is also quick and easy,” says Lee.

“This simplicity combined with strengthen steel makes KCP machines tough and reliable, which allow the machines to run smoothly even in harsh environments.”

Turning their attention to the local market, the teams believe that the concrete pumps

23
“KCP has, after a long absence, returned to the market in a powerful partnership with Gargash group”

from KCP will have many opportunities to prove their worth on site.

“From what KCP can see, the UAE construction outlook is only positive,” says Nawas. “ The UAE government’s “We the UAE 2031” vision aims to double the country’s GDP by 2031, and this will require significant investment in infrastructure, renewable energy and other sectors. The tourism sector is also expected to continue to grow in the future and this will create demand for new hotels, resorts and other tourism-related infrastructure.

“We consider that the UAE market is expected to, and will, grow at a healthy pace in the coming years.”

He adds: “The UAE market has been undergoing significant changes in recent years. The country has been diversifying its economy, moving away from reliance on oil and gas, and investing heavily in various sectors such as technology, tourism, renewable energy, and infrastructure. These economic diversification efforts have opened up new opportunities for businesses across different industries. KCP finds potential opportunities in the UAE market with Gargash.

He continues: “The construction industry has been thriving due to various development projects, including the construction of mega infrastructures, real estate ventures, and urban development initiatives.”

Darras adds that as the UAE market evolves and diversifies, Gargash has adapted its offering to meet the changing needs and preferences of customers. “Gargash has

expanded its product range and incorporated new technologies to align with the demands of the emerging market trends,” he notes. KCP’s main clients are readymix companies. With readymix companies supplying concrete to all construction sites, KCP and Gargash are working side by side with all the main players across UAE to offer the right solutions to their projects and requirements, continues Nawas: “We are also following the latest news and updates on major projects with government sectors

and developers in the construction industry.”

With KCP, a leading concrete pump manufacturer, and Gargash, a well-renowned local supplier of the world’s leading brands, the companies believe they can provide professional and systematic support to their customers in whatever field they are operating.

According to Darras, one of their strengths is the provision of technical knowledge even before a pump is mobilised on site: “We possess extensive knowledge about various types of machinery and equipment. We explain about detailed specifications, operating methods, and maintenance tips for all our products, which help customers to optimise their operation,” he says.

“To find the most suitable concrete pumps based on customer needs and budget, Gargash team engage in individual consultations. They take into account customers’ intended use, work environment, and budget to recommend the most appropriate equipment.”

Gargash’s facilities in the Al Quoz district of Dubai is also proving to be a useful selling tool, as well as a location to demonstrate the capabilities of the machines.

“We assist customers in observing and test the products of interest at the yard. By watching the equipment’s performance and operation first hand, customers can gain confidence and make informed purchasing decisions. Also, we utilise the pumps supplied to our customers as a reference in the market,” says Darras.

On-site and out in the field, contractors can rely on emergency services and maintenance support wherever they need

it: “We provide quick response to customers calls when it comes to maintenance support to ensure customers’ heavy equipment operates smoothly. Swift and reliable service builds trust with customers and fosters longterm collaborations,” says Darras, adding that they are also providing education programmes to customers, “enhancing their understanding of efficient equipment operation and safety procedures.”

With the machinery scene being highly competitive in the UAE, KCP and Gargash are determined to ensure they are working together to offer something compelling and different for end-users.

It helps that both are able to draw on the engineering excellence of another famous brand.

“The majority of concrete pumps in the market are mounted on MercedesBenz trucks, and Gargash combines the dealerships of both KCP and Mercedes-Benz, which help us offer excellent services for both the truck and the pump,” he tells CMME

“Comprehensive service contracts and extended warranty options increases confidence in our products,” says Darras. “Gargash also offers various sales channels such as leasing and financing, to help buyers secure the necessary funding for purchasing Concrete pumps.”

The start of the KCP and Gargash partnership coincides with UAE hosting of the COP28 summit. The concrete industry has been an easy target in the past for its high energy needs and emissions outputs, Mahmoud Darras, says that the Korean manufacturer takes these issues seriously.

“ESG (environmental, social, and governance) and sustainability is a hot topic all over the world. First and foremost, KCP is making a lot of effort to create equipment that is lightweight and fuel efficient to reduce carbon emissions.

“Additionally, there is now a manufacture

and development phase for an electric type concrete pump.

“Additionally, KCP’s own technology, 3D-printed concrete casting, is in the research phase. We believe KCP’s technology can eventually help the UAE achieve its environmental goals,” he says.

Wherever its R&D may take it, KCP remains focused on three areas to stay competitive: simplicity, lightweight machines and stability.

“We understand the importance of providing you with equipment that makes you money.

and stability.

As we all know, time is money, especially when it comes to concrete,” says Mahmoud Darras. “When you combine our simple hydraulic and electrical systems with a team that is dedicated to keeping you up and running, you can count on far less downtime than ever before.

“Secondly, the new generation of concrete pump has an extended reach and is 5-10% lighter than most of our competitors’ products.

“After we reduced the weight, the users benefited with better fuel efficiency and less downtime on the job. As an appointed My Inner Strenx member, the certified concrete pump indicates that our system has passed strict quality inspections and is approved by SSAB AB in terms of welding, design and manufacturing process.

“Lastly, KCP solidified the design through a structural analysis program and increased durability of the equipment is proven by using materials such as SSAB, REXROTH, HAWE and HBC, and others.”

With interview coming to a close, Gargash’s Darras issues a commitment that the partners will strive to deliver for their customers: “Gargash will always offer the best services to satisfy customers in UAE in close collaboration with KCP.”

AVOID SLOPES

Avoid routes that have slopes where possible, if they cannot be avoided then as an operator (site manager) of site dumpers you must check (as part of the risk assessement process) with the vehicle supplier that it can negotiate slopes safely.

AVOIDING OVERTURNING IS CRITICAL

Sadly, site dumpers are involved in approximately a third of all construction transport accidents resulting in many fatalities and serious injuries mainly to the drivers. The most common causes of these accidents are overturning on slopes and rough ground and at the edges of embankments and excavations.

TOP TEN: TIPS FOR BETTER DUMPER TRUCK SITE SAFETY

WIREHOUSE REVIEWS A RANGE OF HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES AND PROVIDES ESSENTIAL DUMPER TRUCK SAFETY GUIDANCE

KEEP CONTROL OF SPEED

Speed can also be a contributing factor in overturning, so should be kept to a minimum generally, especially on rough ground.

ENSURE ROUTES ARE WELL MAINTAINED

An effectively managed site will help reduce incidents involving site dumpers. To help ensure sites are safe, traffic routes used by site dumpers should incorporate effective maintenance of routes to minimise potholes, rut’s, debris and other obstructions.

30 TOP TEN AUGUST 2023
01 04 03 02

NEVER OVERLOAD THE VEHICLE

Site dumpers should not be loaded to a level that would prevent the driver from safely seeing the route ahead in the direction of travel. Site Managers and others responsible for site monitoring activities should always make regular checks to ensure that safety procedures, precautions and controls are in place, effective and being adhered to.

TAKE CARE CONSIDERING THE RIGHT SITE DUMPER

You must ensure that site dumpers a capable of performing the tasks they are expected to undertake. This would include the size and capacity of the dumper. A dumper that is too small is likely to be overloaded and this will increase the risk of overturning and reduce the ability to stop safely.

CONSIDER USING STOP BLOCKS

To prevent site dumpers overturning during tipping manoeuvres, stop blocks can be positioned a safe distance from the edges of excavations, pits and spoil heaps etc.

SAFEGUARD OTHER SITE

USERS

Vehicular/pedestrian conflict (where site dumpers are used in the vicinity of people) is a significant hazard that needs to be closely considered especially when evaluating suitable risk control measures.

REINFORCE THE ROADWAYS

In areas where traffic routes pass close to the edge of excavations, embankments or other drops, the edge of the roadway must be supported to prevent vehicles running off the roadway.

BE PREPARED TO MOVE THE BAR

What if you cannot pass through a doorway or other opening due to the ROPS bar? THE THRILL OF A LIVE HEAVY MACHINERY SALE

EURO AUCTIONS ON WHY BUYERS ARE RETURNING TO A GLOBAL PLAYER WHICH STILL VALUES THE THRILL OF AN AUCTION SALE DAY

32 FEATURE AUGUST 2023

Used construction machinery is a global commodity that is traded around the planet. Good, fresh, late, low hours machines are always in high demand and during Covid, with OEMs shutting down manufacture, used equipment values went through the roof. During that time, with dealerships unable to get new stock, heavy plant and machinery auctions came to the rescue, providing a ready supply of good used diggers, dozers, telehandlers, back-hoes, and whatever the market demanded.

Then, the world changed. Now smaller, Covid showed us new ways to do business, from the comfort of our own homes, online and on Zoom with some the major global big live machinery sales shutting down, instead choosing to conduct their business online only.

But one global player still values the thrill of sale day, with row upon row of machines lined up, looking majestic and regimented, awaiting their new owners. Welcome to the world of Euro Auctions, the world’s largest privately owned auction house for the used and unused machinery market, which now resides in Abu Dhabi.

So, why are Euro Auctions, one of the last large auction companies operating this type of sale, not just in the Middle East, but globally, when competitors are persisting with only the internet? Euro Auctions have always had extremely close relationships with its global clients, valuing these relationships and getting to know customers by name.

With over 80,000 lots consigned 7,000 plus vendors, attracting over 70,000 bidders with over 10,000 buyers successfully purchasing per year, Euro Auctions sees great value in the effect that a physical plant and machinery sale delivers. Giving customers a great choice of machines, they can physically inspect, in one place. Creating a market buzz where the industry can gather, network, and interact. Where Euro Auctions’ country managers and sales managers can meet the buyers and sellers to better understand the needs of the industry on a face-to-face basis.

The live sale

So, what does a typical auction deliver? What can sellers and bidders expect from a live heavy machinery sale? What are the thrills of the day? There are many parts to each sale and typically at any of the nine permanent sale sites Euro Auctions operates around the globe the run-up to the day and the actual sale delivers the following:

Set Up

Set up for sale day at every site is the same and can take weeks. Machines are categorised by type and laid out in rows, including excavators, dozers, telehandlers, site dumpers, back hoes, loaders, articulated dump trucks, man-lifts, and every type of machine available. Excavators are categorised and laid out in class, including mini diggers, up to 6-tonnes, up to 10-tonnes and 20-tonnes and over. Buyers can browse rows upon rows in classification by manufacturer. In the UK, where Euro Auctions run Europe’s biggest live sale, where close to 7,000 lots of construction machinery are sold every six weeks, the yard starts filling up the day after the previous sale and at most sales in Leeds there will be more than 1,000 diggers waiting for buyers.

Preparing For Equipment for Sale

Clean smart-looking machines sell much better than machines that look as if they have just come off a construction project, and they fetch far better prices. At some of the Euro Auctions sites they help customers make machines ready for sale by providing a valet service, with onsite workshops and jet wash bays, where presale repairs can be carried out. Whilst not all Euro Auction sites have this facility.

Marketing

Euro Auctions attracts buyers not browsers, by expertly marketing to a global audience. With extensive knowledge of the industry Euro Auctions ensures sellers’ machines are advertised in global markets where demand is highest. Euro Auctions’ free online bidding platform allows easy access to each auction from anywhere in the world. With over 50% of lots being exported, you can be assured equipment fetches true global market value. Each auction on average attracts bidders from

over 100 countries. With over 40 territory managers across the globe, multilingual marketing and on-site and online bidding, sellers can be assured of worldwide exposure, with loyal buyers attracted to each sale.

Inspections

Before each sale, prospective buyers can inspect any of the machines on offer. A facility that Euro Auctions are rolling out across its site is live video inspection. For example, at the Leeds sale in the UK, for buyers that cannot get to the live sale they can book a time slot on the website and receive a link to watch/take part in the inspection. Each time slot provides you with one hour with the inspector and you can ask for multiple on-site lots to be inspected, if it falls within this time frame. Inspectors are kitted out with state-ofthe-art smart glasses, which will enable customers to see everything happening in real time, as if you were looking at the equipment yourself. Once the inspection is complete, you receive a full recording to watch back.

Registration & Deposits

Registering for all sales is relatively simple. To bid, all new buyers are required to pay a minimum deposit of £/€/$/Dh 1,000. The deposit paid dictates the maximum spend allowed. For example: a £1,000 deposit equals a £10,000 credit limit; a £5,000 deposit equals a £25,000 credit limit; and a £10,000 deposit equals a £50,000

credit limit. All new buyers must provide: Photographic Identification – (Driver’s License/Passport/National ID Card) plus a letter of Authorisation from a Company Director, on headed paper, if bidding on behalf of a company. A Company VAT Number should also be provided, if applicable.

The Parade and Dead Row

Each Euro Auctions sale operates on two principles, the Parade, and the non-rolling

stock. The American style parade is a sight to behold, with a continuous stream of machines parading in front of the bidding crowd. In a big sales there can be over 1,000 diggers crossing over the ramp at a single sale, and other multiples may be hundreds of tractors, telehandlers, dozers and so on. This is a rare privilege to watch and for those in the industry, priceless intelligence can be gained as to what used machines are worth. Dealers typically send ‘watchers’ to every sale to catalogue the

hammer price of all lots sold. As this real time/ in that moment data is the true value of what that machine is worth on the day. The crowd sets the price for all machines and the value of the sale and a good crowd, on any day, can push up the price.

Bidding

Buyers can bid on any Euro Auctions sale in one of three ways.

• Bid On Site: register on the day to bid in the live auction, on the day, on the floor, as the sale progresses. This is popular with many buyers who like the thrill of the live sale, with machines going over the ramp and the rhythmic chant of the auctioneers.

• Bid Online: You can bid online on all Euro Auctions’ sales, providing access to the machinery you need. To bid online you must create an online account and register for the auctions you are interested in. You must register to obtain a bidding number. Watch and bid live from the comfort of your own desk.

• Pre-Bidding: Busy on the day of the auction, want to bid on multiple items in different Rings at the same time, unsure of your internet connection, not confident yet to bid online live? Then pre-bidding is a great alternative and allows you to secure your bid on an item.

Away from the live sales, Euro Auctions run ‘Timed Online Auctions’ where bidding is online only but doesn’t involve an auctioneer. As well as the Daily Marketplace, an online sale where every item is sold to the highest bidder. Before you can bid on a Time Online Auction you will need to sign-in to create an online account, then register for the auction, pay your deposit and you are approved to bid.

The Thrill of the Sale Day

All machine operators and dealers have got diesel in their veins. They thrive on the smell of oil, diesel smoke, hydraulic fluid, kicking the tyres and meeting their peers, who, like them have probably just stepped off a digger, to come and bid for their next machine, still with mud on their boots. There is nothing like sale day. It’s wild and noisy, with the chant of the auctioneer constant, planting a rhythmic ear worm inside your head. Visually the scale of the

event is mindboggling as this is the biggest mixed plant dealership with every type of machine on offer.

The crowds mill around watching the ramp, networking, catching up with old friends, checking prices, looking for a bargain, taking a punt on a new machine, acting on impulse, and making a snap purchase. It’s a cacophony of sounds and smells with the crowds jostling to see the action and for all attending it’s typically the best day on the calendar.

Transport & Shipping

Euro Auctions’ Transportation Department delivers equipment purchased from all auctions throughout the world, shipping machinery globally, every day.

With a dedicated team to assist and advise from order conception right through to delivery, they have access to hundreds of haulage companies and shipping agencies. Euro Auctions does the hard work by offering the best competitive rates.

IS THERE ANY POINT ELECTRIFYING TRACTORS? ASKS ALASTAIR HAYFIELD, SENIOR RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INTERACT ANALYSIS

ARE E-TRACTORS WORTH IT?

With all the pressures that modern farmers face, and the fact that most agricultural emissions don’t come from machinery, is there an argument to say there is little point in electrifying tractors? Farmers –wherever they may be – face multiple pressures. From basic economic survival in a period of volatile crop prices and energy costs, to the impact of global warming, there is often little time or appetite to change processes and overhaul machinery.

to how they operate and may not benefit the wider environment as much as other changes such as animal feed formulations that reduce enteric fermentation.

Only 5% of tractors sold globally in 2030 are forecast to be fully battery electric. Emissions from machinery don’t even make it into the top 5 in the agricultural sector. The top source – enteric fermentation or cow burps – represents 40% of total GHG emissions followed by manure left on pastures, and the use of synthetic fertilisers.

Asking farmers to replace their primary piece of mechanisation – the tractor – with an

In reality, emission reduction in agriculture is going to be more about fertiliser reduction, reduction in the amount of animals reared and/or reducing enteric fermentation, and manure management than it is about changes in how tractors are powered. That said, improving the efficiency of tractors is clearly important and, if the fuel they use can be more sustainable, so be it.

At Interact Analysis, we think tractors will use a mix of powertrains in the future, with electric being one part, and a much greater part being engines that use biofuels or green hydrogen. The choice of biofuel will become hyper-localised and dependent on the local crops or availability of biomethane.

THE AC 7.450-1

The Tadano AC 7.450-1 is in a class of its own: With a carrier length of 15.99 m and an outrigger base of 8.45 m, it is as compact as a six-axle crane, and yet is as powerful as some eight-axle cranes. In fact, the AC 7.450-1 can reach lifting capacities of up to 23.7 tonnes when its 80 m main boom is fully extended, and that is without even using the SSL system. Bring in SSL, and the lifting capacity goes up to an unbeatable 37.3 tonnes. In addition, Tadano is using a new Sideways Superlift design for the first time ever in the AC 7.450-1 – one that makes handling and setup easier. The system can be extended with an 81 m luffing jib, and the sections of this jib can also be used to assemble fixed extensions.
