Grand Egyptian Museum

Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris presents the largest retrospective of British artist David Hockney, offering a rare look into his multifaceted universe through paintings, sketches and digital art. Living the Dream
For the past three decades, Myrto Alikaki has been moving with quiet strength through the realms of theater, television and film. From TV shows that have been pivotal to challenging roles on stage, Alikaki has created her own distinct artistic mark. In conversation with her, it becomes apparent that behind her serene exterior lies a woman who chooses to stand in the light – even when there is noise all around her. Relaxed and open, she spoke to us about her choices, about the theater and her students, and about her life away from the celebrity spotlight.

Going back to where it all began, would you say you were destined to become an actor? Do you recall a specific time as the moment you felt the calling?
I was very young when I felt the calling. Although there were moments of doubt along the way, it was pretty clear inside me. Since that time, all I could think of was when I would finish school and enroll in drama school.
How did your family react to your choice?
My family had a very positive reaction. I am fortunate to come from an artistic family, since both my parents are graduates of the School of Fine Arts. So, I grew up in a home filled with artistic company, and hence my decision to follow in the same footsteps did not come as a surprise.
How do you view yourself now in your industry?
Have you revised your opinion about certain things, or do you still operate as you did in the beginning?
I feel content with the choice I made. Besides, as a person, I choose to focus on the positive, not on the negative. The fact that I have been able to make a
living in this profession is a very positive development for me. This job has been my sole source of income and means of livelihood for years; as I grow older, I try to find additional financial resources. I want to be able to hold on to the most enjoyable part of my artistic endeavors and, at the same time, have the freedom to be more selective.
And to answer your second question, I will say that I haven’t revised my opinion about anything. What happens is that I learn new things every day, and that is perhaps what I love most about this job. Being a teacher for several years now has been a great help. By observing my students and trying to help them, I end up helping myself.

How do you handle those periods when work is scarce, or things don’t go as you had planned?
I have always had many interests and things that I enjoy doing. There are many activities that I try, as much as I can, to incorporate into my life – some artistic, some not. I may engage with investment issues, or take up other, more creative pursuits, such as sewing clothes or making jewelry. I believe that each new endeavor is a form of renewal. My aim is to grow older without regrets.
How do you define success? Has your definition changed over time?
My concept of success hasn’t really changed over time. For me, success is going through life – with its joys and its challenges – and feeling, overall, that you have fulfilled your duty to yourself. Feeling that you have been faithful to your values; that you haven’t become alienated or someone that you never wanted to be.
Throughout the years and across all the roles that you have performed, was there one that impacted you on this level?
You know, I feel that the people I have met and everything I have experienced ultimately strengthened my existing beliefs. Almost like they confirmed certain things for me.
In regard to yourself or to your work?
In regard to what I just said – that the only path in life is to follow one’s heart. And I don’t say this as a cliché; it is something that I believe deeply. I believe that we all have a duty to ourselves. Specifically, I felt that I had a duty to have children, to be an actor and to make a living from that. To keep my dear friends close to me, and to try to be a good person; not competitive, or vindictive, but eager to help where I can. That has been my compass and I am grateful for everything I have today.
This coming October, you return to the stage in Linda, a play where you embody a woman who, while she appears to have it all, comes face to face with the downfall. How do you approach the question of women’s age and their “retirement”?
Linda is a 55-year old woman who has worked for a large cosmetics company for the past three decades
and has two daughters from two different marriages. She is facing precisely this “retirement” phase, a process that society imposes on women past a certain age. And she is experiencing this within an environment that is dominated by a worship of youth and an obsession with anti-aging.
Linda tries to come to terms with the fact that she is growing older, to love herself and to convince those around her that aging is not just natural but also beautiful. Maturity brings precious gifts and that is why we should not hate our wrinkles. Personally, I identify completely with Linda and I feel grateful that I am given the opportunity to embody this woman.
Do you believe that there is an effort underway to return to a natural appearance?
The question is what happens with role models. Have you seen what is promoted on Instagram? How many women do you see preserving their natural appearance and how many have altered their looks?
Don’t you see women who, already in their midtwenties or early thirties, are embracing surgery to prevent the future? To never grow old?
Thankfully, there are also women – including some very famous Hollywood stars – who chose to look their age and to defend their natural appearance. In my opinion, these women are doing important work, because they are demonstrating a different, healthy attitude towards time. But I am also seeing increasing more of the other side, the paranoia. And the most disturbing part is that I am seeing it among very young girls.


Ultimately, what is to blame? Our own insecurities, or the images that we see on social media?
If you are asking me who is to blame, I will answer bluntly: capitalism. The market always finds a way to maximize profit, and the easiest way is to take advantage of people’s fears. The same is true with this obsession with fitness. And this is coming from me, and I do Pilates every day!
But it is one thing to exercise in order to feel healthy and well, and another to get to a point where you are terrified of eating a tiny bit extra. We all want to take care of ourselves and to look as good as possible, but with what we have, not with something fake. Excess is the problem.
Do you take care of yourself?
Of course I take care of myself, and mostly my strength. I work out because I want to feel healthy and strong, with a body that can withstand the pace of my life. I don’t purchase expensive face creams. There are excellent products available in pharmacies, affordable and effective.
For me, the most important thing is to be radiant. To smile. There is nothing more attractive in a person than their radiance.
The public has also gotten to know you through your cooking, which has become viral on social media. How did you feel sharing that part of yourself?
Cooking comes very naturally to me, almost intuitively. I have been cooking for almost as long as I can remember. I live with my two children and my mother, all of whom I care for, so cooking is an everyday necessity.
But to be honest, I am very relaxed about food. One day I may eat like there’s no tomorrow, and then I can spend three days eating only a cheese pie or a sandwich. And I also love the “forbidden” foods; I just try to indulge myself without excess. I don’t want to deny myself anything.
You recently visited Thessaloniki for the Greek Cuisine Awards and stayed at Makedonia Palace. What was your experience like?
I love the city of Thessaloniki and its people. I have very dear friends in the city. And during my recent visit, I felt a deep sense of being welcome – both by the people of the Awards and the hotel staff. Especially at Makedonia Palace, everyone was truly
gracious and helpful. And since I am a foodie, I enjoyed excellent meals at the hotel’s restaurants. But what I want to underline is that Makedonia Palace has a quiet, discreet luxury. Personally, I find ostentatious opulence distasteful. But here it is all about “good” luxury – the kind that upgrades the quality of your stay, without becoming grating. The hotel has a perfect sense of moderation and great aesthetics. For example, the décor in the lobby is modern, artistic, with nothing superfluous.
What’s in your plans for the future?
If all goes well, this coming winter we start filming for the TV show Marvelous Creatures [Yperocha Plasmata], 20 years later. We will get on set towards the end of the year, and the new episodes are set to air in 2027.

SEXY CHIC
In the Spring/Summer 2025 runway shows, sheer textiles emerged as a dominant trend, lending to the season’s looks an air of elegance and femininity. Top fashion houses such as Chloé and Victoria Beckham showed looks that included sheer elements, incorporating delicate textiles such as organza, chiffon and tulle in dresses, skirts, and tops. Lavish romanticism, discreet sexiness, and fairytale touches add up to one of the hottest trends of the season.


You may love them or hate them, but one thing is certain – peep-toes are back, straight from the 2010s! This year, they come in a more modern and bold iteration. For this spring/summer season, brands such as Tory Burch, Acne and Miu Miu showed peep-toe shoes in subversive combinations, while the dominant designs combine vintage and contemporary influences.

The androgynous style is nothing new to fashion, but this season it is back in an updated version. Starting with the maître of the style, the house of Saint Laurent, which has been leading this trend since its founder launched the famous Le Smoking, and followed by other top fashion brands, women in 2025 dress in oversized suits that make them look alluring and full of confidence.

This season, the trend in sunglasses is to adopt a “more is more” approach. Fashion’s Musical Chairs

The fashion world is experiencing a series of disruptive changes in the top fashion houses, with an unprecedented game of “musical chairs” that is redrawing the global style map.

The fashion industry is arguably one of the most dynamic and fast-moving economic sectors in the world. The reshuffling of creative directors at the top of major fashion houses has become a frequent phenomenon, with big names moving from one brand to another, influencing the course and style of the top luxury labels. In 2025, fashion entered a new era, with constant changes that are more reminiscent of a game of “musical chairs” than the traditional strategies that we have been used to.
Creative directors are no longer just designers, but visionaries, shaping the future of the big fashion houses.
This year brings some of the most significant and unexpected moves by global brands, establishing a new landscape that will determine fashion’s direction for the coming years.
For example, the departure of Jonathan Anderson from the position of creative director at Loewe after 11 years shocked his fans, who wondered what his next move might be. They didn’t have to wait long to find out: the talented designer stepped up as the new Creative Director of Dior, replacing Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Anderson’s role at Dior is expected to bring a fresh approach and experimentation to one of the world’s most storied fashion labels, which has traditionally relied on elegance and timelessness. This choice is not only part of a strategy to strengthen innovation at the house, but also a comment on current trends. It seems that the top brands want to bring in “new blood” in order to tear down the borders between traditional and contemporary.
The position vacated by Jonathan Anderson at Loewe was covered by the American duo of Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, founders of Proenza Schouler. This collaboration is expected to bring a breath of fresh air to the brand, which has had an impressive run in the past few years. The duo’s approach, which is distinguished for the incorporation of contemporary American culture into luxury fashion, promises to reinstate Loewe as a strong presence on the international stage.
At Balenciaga, which in recent years has combined avantgarde design with streetwear, one of the most recognized designers of his time, Demna, has announced that he is leaving the brand. This decision comes after a period
of strong criticism and conflict surrounding Demna’s controversial choices, although there can be no doubt that the designer revived the brand’s image.
Demna has moved to the position left open by Sabato De Sarno’s departure as creative director of Gucci. The changes to come at Gucci are expected to be spectacular, since Demna may introduce a wilder and more subversive element to the brand’s glamorous and refined image. While for traditional fans of Gucci Demna’s appointment may seem risky, his collaboration with the brand is expected to produce an explosive cocktail of luxury fashion and an alternative aesthetic.
Another notable change is at Jean Paul Gaultier where, following the founder’s retirement from the position of creative director, the job was taken over by a different guest designer each season. However, the position is now covered permanently by Duran Lantink, who is distinguished for his unique point of view and bold touches, and many expect him to produce great collections.
At the house of Mugler, following the successful, sevenyear run of Casey Cadwallader, Miguel Castro Freitas is called upon to bring something fresh to the brand.
One of the most discussed searches for a new creative director has been the one at Chanel. Following countless scenarios, it was finally announced that Matthieu Blazy will replace Virginie Viard. The talented Blazy was at the helm of Bottega Veneta, where Louis Trotte now holds the top job.
Fendi is in search of its next creative director, following the departure of Kim Jones; rumors have mentioned Pierpaolo Piccioli, former creative director of Valentino. At Versace, the big change came after the iconic Donatella Versace stepped down from the position of creative director and passed the baton to Dario Vitale. This revived the course of the label, which was recently acquired by the Prada Group.
2025 brings proof that fashion is more uncertain than ever. The top fashion houses are in perpetual search of new ideas, adapted to global trends and the changes introduced by our times. Creative directors are not just designers – they are creators of culture, reshaping our style and aesthetics.
The question is whether these new directions will succeed and survive, and whether the new creative directors will manage to prove their worth in such a demanding and competitive environment. In any case, fashion never stops evolving, and it will certainly continue to surprise us, with new ideas and unexpected approaches.

Our strategy is based on promotion, market analysis, and a clientcentric approach; we highlight the uniqueness of Makedonia Palace and we build trust with our guests. We monitor developments in tourism at the local and international level, and we are flexible in adapting our approach. Being included in the top category of the WorldHotels Luxury Collection of the BWH Hotel Group was an important milestone; it strengthened the tourism imprint of Thessaloniki and attracted a new, elevated audience. The WorldHotels Loyalty Program offers additional privileges to our clients. We create targeted offers that combine stays and services, broadening our range without sacrificing quality. We maintain an active presence on social media and design personalized promotional activities in collaboration with tourism agencies and event organizers. Our goal is to establish Makedonia Palace as the top choice for luxury accommodation in Thessaloniki.
What are the main challenges that you face in managing sales at a luxury hotel such as Makedonia Palace, and how do you overcome them?
As Director of Sales at Makedonia Palace, I deal on a daily basis with the challenges of a competitive and shifting environment. Maintaining the high quality of our services and strengthening our position in the market are basic priorities. Flexibility and adaptability are necessary in order to meet changes in guests’ travelling habits and expectations, while the plethora of new accommodation options in Thessaloniki is increasing our competition. Our goal is to stay ahead through personalization, innovation, and investment in staff training, so that we can respond immediately to the market’s needs. Furthermore, we deal with seasonality and devise a databased, flexible pricing policy in collaboration with Revenue Manager, to maximize value and trust. Our guests’ growing expectations push us to aim higher, combining our authenticity, aesthetics, and experience. Maintaining our leading position requires strategic planning, group effort, and continuous adaptation to challenges.
How do you utilize new technologies and digital media to promote the hotel increase sales?
The utilization of new technologies and digital media is our central strategy for increasing sales and promotion both in the domestic and the international markets. The industry is constantly evolving through technological and global trends, with technology acting as a catalyst for evolution and delivering a comprehensive, premium hospitality experience. We invest in Google Ads and social media campaigns (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn) with the aim of enhancing the hotel's presence and reputation worldwide. On our website we have integrated technologies such as AI chat bot, online booking and personalized offers, growing reservations and loyalty. Plus, features like Pre-CheckIn boost convenience and speed. These innovations enhance the guest experience, increasing guest satisfaction and Makedonia Palace's competitive advantage in the luxury hotel market.
What are the most successful programs or initiatives you have implemented to increase the number of guests and enhance their experience at Makedonia Palace?
At Makedonia Palace, we focus on initiatives that increase stays and elevate the hospitality experience. Together with the Executive Chef of Salonika Restaurant, Sotiris Evangelou, we create culinary experiences that are authentically local. We invest in strong partnerships with travel agencies and event organizers, growing our clientele’s trust and recurring visits. Sustainability is one of our pillars, with environmentally friendly practices and food waste management, enhancing the authenticity of the experience and our competitive advantage. The hotel hosts high-quality events and participates in international tourism exhibitions, promoting Thessaloniki and expanding its client base. These initiatives are not only reflected in numbers and occupancy rates, but primarily in the strengthening of our guests’ emotional bond with the hospitality experience we offer, which is the basis of our long-term success.

We invest strongly in conference tourism, hosting important national and international conferences, while participating in international B2B tourism exhibitions. At the same time, we adapt to new trends with an emphasis on sustainability, digital experience and promoting the local cuisine, offering authentic and opulent hospitality.
What are the biggest challenges you face in trying to increase sales, and how do you address them?
One of the biggest challenges is the strong competition in the tourism market and the constant shifting of travel habits. Nowadays, clients are looking for experiences, not just accommodation. We respond flexibly, investing in personalized services, technology, and providing an authentic hospitality experience. At the same time, we are constantly adjusting our commercial strategy based on data and new trends, in order to remain competitive and up to date.
How do you work with other departments of the hotel, such as reservation management, to ensure the success of your sales?
The success of a hotel is largely based on continuous and good cooperation between all departments. At Makedonia Palace, the sales team works closely with reservation management, front desk, operations and F&B, to ensure that we have common goals, consistent information on availability, guest needs and the quality of the services provided. Through regular communication and data sharing, we ensure that our commercial strategy is aligned with the daily operation of the hotel and the experience we offer to our guests.
What are the most successful tools or techniques you use to promote Makedonia Palace and develop relationships with clients and associates?
Among the most successful tools we use is personalized communication with clients and frequent presence in international B2B exhibitions. Strategic partnerships with tour operators, active promotion in digital media, as well as comp stays, fam trips and professional events contribute substantially to the promotion of the brand. Above all, we invest in human relationships, because trust and consistency are the key to long-term partnerships.

The continuous investment in infrastructure and adaptation to client needs make it a top choice for corporate events in Thessaloniki, with an emphasis on the quality of venues and technological support, thanks to many years of experience in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) events. The hotel offers flexible services and customized packages, while also cultivating reliable corporate relationships through contracts based on annual reservation volume. What trends do you see emerging in the sector of group and corporate sales in the Thessaloniki market, and how do you adapt your strategies to remain competitive?
We are seeing a growing emphasis on personalized service, as well as a shift towards solutions that offer flexibility and digital
support. Especially following the pandemic, many businesses are reviewing their partnerships with the aim of optimizing costs and the effectiveness of the provided services or products. To remain competitive, we tailor our proposals based on the specific needs of each company, with customized solutions. We invest in training our sales team to be able to offer sales consulting, not just sales promotion. We strengthen partnerships with local institutions and businesses, in order to have a valid picture of market dynamics.
What are the criteria you consider when putting together offers and packages for group clients, and how do you ensure your clients' satisfaction and recurring stays?
When putting together offers and packages for groups, we take into account a number of factors, such as each group’s profile and needs, seasonality, length of stay, number of participants and individual requirements (technical, culinary, entertainment). To ensure that clients are satisfied and will return for future stays, we implement a client-centric approach based on direct communication, ongoing support throughout the event, and active collection of feedback after departure. At the same time, we maintain frequent contact with key accounts, cultivating relationships of trust and cooperation.
How do you collaborate with the rest of the sales department and the hotel’s services to ensure a comprehensive and successful experience for your group clients?
The success of a group booking or corporate event relies on the flawless cooperation of all departments involved. For this reason, we maintain close and constant communication with the rest of the sales department, so that we are fully coordinated with regard to the needs and expectations of the client. At the same time, we work closely with the reservations, F&B, housekeeping and front desk departments, from the preparation phase to the execution of the stay or event. We ensure that there is a clear flow of information so that everyone knows the details for each group.

Furthermore, its strategic location on the city’s waterfront makes it a symbol with cultural and touristic value. All of this is a key source of inspiration for my role as Group Sales Executive, so that I approach every group stay with the responsibility, precision and professionalism required, as the name “Makedonia Palace” carries gravitas, high expectations and is associated with prestige. Every group booking is treated not just as a service, but as an experience worthy of the hotel's reputation. My goal is to strengthen this image through long-term, reliable and quality partnerships.

One of the main trends we observe is the growth of MICE tourism. Thessaloniki is established as a conference and cultural destination and this, in turn, boosts demand for group bookings, corporate events and international meetings. Makedonia Palace actively participates in MICE expos and hosts several high-level conferences from various countries. Also, the number of countries where group bookings originate have increased greatly in recent years. Thus, we now have group bookings from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Taiwan, China and many European countries, and many of these bookings are recurring. At Makedonia Palace we evolve and meet the trends, integrating them into our services and our relationships with our partners. Our goal is to offer not just accommodation, but hospitality experiences that build trust and long-term partnerships.
Can you share a success story or experience from an important group booking that you managed to secure, and what you learn from it?
All group bookings are equally important. At Makedonia Palace we accommodate a wide range of events – from large medical and scientific conferences and meetings, corporate conferences and product presentations, to receptions, galas and of course social events, such as weddings and christenings. Each type of event has its own needs and peculiarities. Our role is to adapt with flexibility and attention to detail. What sets us apart is the ability to listen to our clients, to understand the objective of each event and to adapt our services in a way that combines knowhow with personalized attention. PSI by Mezen is the first fish-butcher shop in Greece. Preparing daily fish preparations, which we are used to encountering in a butcher shop. Wandering through Bergen
Bergen – or, historically, Bjørgvin – is a municipality and city in Vestland County, on the western coast of Norway. It is the second largest city in Norway, built on the Bergenshalvøyen peninsula. The city center and its northern boroughs are on the Byfjorden, literary the “city fjord”. The city is surrounded by mountain masses, giving Bergen its moniker, “the city between seven mountains”, while many of the city’s outer suburbs are located on islands. There are many different activities to enjoy, such as cruises, mountain hiking, or visiting the Vilvite Science Museum and the Aquarium; the latter offers interactive games and exhibits, making it ideal for small children.

Torshavn tales
The capital of the Danish territory of the Faroe Islands literarily means “Thor’s Harbor”, and it was named after the famous deity of Norse mythology. Framed by the majestic mountains of Húsareyn to the north and Kirkjubøreyn to the southwest, Tórshavn is the perfect antidote to urban living. Take in the spectacular view of the sea as you sit by the port or explore the old town with the picturesque abodes. Located in the geographical center of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn is the perfect base from which to explore the region’s coastal treasures. It should be noted that the Faroe Islands are home to the world’s first undersea traffic circle.

Exploring Aarhus
The second largest city in Denmark is an urban island surrounded by evergreen forests including Marselisborg, Hestehaven, Kirkeskoven and Havreballe, where you can explore landscapes covered in flowers and watch the local wildlife awaken after the long winter months. Aarhus has a lively art scene that includes world-class cultural sites, such as the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, the Moesgaard Museum, and the unique outdoor Den Gamle By Museum that will take you back in time.
