MDes / BA (Hons) Product Design Coventry University Degree Show

Each year the course challenges our outgoing students, providing a test bed and showcase for their design skills. The extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in have tested them further than usual, and we are very proud of the resilience they have shown in their continued pursuit of excellence. Finishing the academic year in lockdown has required us all to adapt to new workflows, integrating more digital communication, remote teaching and independent learning; making the most of the creative technologies available to us.

It is with this ethos of innovation and agility that we approach the design of new products. Our final major projects are carefully researched from the outset; justified in their conception by solving problems, meeting needs or addressing emerging opportunities in the real world. Students engage with a four-stage process over the course of the year:

Enquiry

Ideation

Development – Delivery

Research critically informs the ideation process, and concepts are explored and validated through rigorous experiential and digital prototyping before being optimised for manufacture. A focus on sustainability throughout the investigation ensures that outcomes are mindful of climate change, diminishing resources and material waste. Our approach is not limited to one type of product, and we are excited, once again, to present human-centred solutions across a range of sectors, including consumer, industrial, assisstive, healthcare, sports and furniture design.

The professional attitude developed by this cohort over the course of their studies makes them well-placed to address the challenges facing the profession, and indeed humanity. We wish them every success in the next stage of their journey, as they seek opportunities in industry. They follow in the footsteps of the distinguished and established alumni who continue to encourage and support the course. We hope you enjoy exploring this year’s ideas, and that we will be able to welcome you to the University in the near future.
