DEAR EVAN HANSEN
‘Today is going to be a good day...’ With not one, but two Evan Hansens in the room, that would appear to be a given
Liam Rudden interviews
Ryan Kopel & Sonny Monaghan
Liam Rudden Media
Ryan Kopel & Sonny Monaghan may sport very different looks and have an age gap of six years but they have one important thing in common, both are preparing to play the iconic title role in the new Nottingham Playhouse production of the Olivier, Tony and Grammy awardwinning Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen.
Kopel stars in the fresh new take on the musical, which will embark on its first UK Tour after opening in Nottingham, while Monaghan is the alternate Evan. Both are excited at the prospect and it's clear they can't wait to have an audience.
With musical theatre credits that include Newsies and The Book of Mormon, Kopel landed the coveted role after a three month audition process. He recalls, “My agent asked me if I’d be interested in Dear Evan Hansen at the start of the year. I said, 'Yes', and then did five auditions, the last one being in March. A couple of days later, while on the Underground going home, my agent called to say I’d got the part. I was so excited I had to get off the Tube to scream a little bit. Then I realised I was miles away from my stop and would have to walk the rest of the way. That was even more tortuous as I couldn't wait to see my family and partner’s faces when I told them.”
If Kopel’s casting followed a fairly traditional route, for Monaghan, from
(Left to right) Sonny Monaghan and Ryan Kopel
Eastbourne, the audition process proved very ‘now’, he landed the part after submitting a video on TikTok, as part of the casting team’s collaboration with the social media platform, which invited users who were interested in being cast in the production to upload a video of themselves singing any number from the show.
From more than 2,000 submissions, the 21-year-old was one of 36 TikTok users invited to in- person auditions, eventually being cast as a member of the show's ensemble and as alternate
Evan, a role he will perform twice a week, at every matinee.
The 21-year-old explains, “I saw a post asking people to submit a video of themselves singing a number from Dear Evan Hansen through TikTok. I sang Words Fail. Maybe three weeks later I got an email inviting me to an in person audition.”
Three rounds of auditions later, Monaghan was recording a song for his friend’s new musical when he got his good news and, as it was Dear Evan Hansen that first got him into musical
Going out
theatre while at secondary school, he says receiving the news was "a dream come true."
“When my agent called and said I’d been offered the alternate Evan, my friend and I had a bit of a celebration,” he admits.
Dear Evan Hansen is the story of an anxious high school kid who wants nothing more than to fit in. The thing is, on his way to fitting in, he didn’t tell the whole truth. And now must give up on a life he never dreamt he’d have. As events spiral and the truth comes out, Evan faces a reckoning with himself and everyone around him.
The musical premiered in Washington, DC, in 2015 before transferring to OffBroadway and then Broadway a year later. The London West End production followed in 2019 but it was on Broadway that Monaghan, a self confessed fan of the show, first saw the musical during a family holiday to New York. He loved it so much he then went to see the original West End production when it opened.
For 27-year-old Kopel, it was a very different story.
The actor from Kirriemuir, in Scotland, reveals, “I never saw the original production, but Dear Evan Hansen was such a huge cultural phenomenon when it first came out that I knew all about it without ever really knowing the story.”
His introduction to that came during the audition process and with themes including bullying and mental health, he quickly discovered that Dear Evan Hansen deals with some important issues.
He recalls, “Reading the script during the audition process was very helpful because as much as Ben Platt, the original Evan, was iconic in the role, it was nice to be able to form my own take on Evan. The writing is so good that I really can just trust my instinct to bring what I feel to the character. Usually when you do a musical that has been done before, there’s a set way of doing everything; 'This is how you say this line,' and, 'This is where you stand on the stage for this moment'. We’ve had none of that. We have complete freedom to take the script and create something new.”
‘Staging-wise, everything is different...” chips in Monaghan, before Kopel continues, “It’s eight years since the
Going out
Broadway production debuted, which doesn’t sound that long but when you think about it, a lot has changed in that time. The technology we use everyday is so different that much of the script has taken on a whole new meaning. Just looking at the piece from the lens of 2024 has been an interesting experience.”
If the rehearsal period has been invigorating for Kopel, for Monaghan it has been nothing less than hectic. Explaining how having two Evans ‘in the room' works, he reveals, “Mainly, it’s Ryan and the principal cast who are in the rehearsal room with director Adam Penford. They create the show. As the alternate Evan, I get brought in once it looks the way they want it to look. Then I work with our associate director to replicate that.”
Kopel elaborates, “To be fair, that is the case, but it’s also done that way because Sonny has about '90 million' different things to learn. While I’m lucky to be focussing on one character, he has to be in a different room learning the parts of Evan, Connor, Jared and all the ensemble's moves too. 100 percent do I have the easy shift... apart from having to do it every night,” he grins.
And it’s not just lines, songs and moves the pair have to familiarise themselves with, due to the sensitive themes of the piece, producers have partnered with The Mix, the UK’s leading digital charity for under 25-year-olds, to ensure anyone affected by the issues explored in the show knows where to find support. The Mix has provided training to the cast and creative team on how to appropriately
respond to queries from the public, both online and offline, and equip them with the knowledge to direct individuals to the right support channels.
“The Mix is there for anyone who needs to reach out for support," explains Kopel. "We had a long Zoom with them the very first week of rehearsals where they explained what they did and the way they work. It was an incredible insight into a world I had no idea about.”
“There's just something about this show that allows people to connect deeply with the characters. We take that responsibility incredibly seriously and having that guidance from The Mix is vitally important.” said Kopel.
Despite its themes, Dear Evan Hansen is a beautifully crafted and uplifting piece of musical theatre, one that Monaghan believes will “be a blessing for many, by helping them realise they need to talk to someone.”
Kopel agrees, “Ultimately, Dear Evan Hansen is about hope. No matter what happens, what you are going through, its message is that there is always someone to talk to and reasons why you should go on. That’s what I'd like people to take away from the show.”
Packed with some of the biggest musical theatre songs of the last decade, Dear Evan Hansen has Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Oscar-winning composers for The Greatest Showman, to thank for
its haunting score and both Evans have a favourite song when asked which they enjoy singing most. The anthemic For Forever is Monaghan’s while for Kopel it is Words Fail, he adds with a cheeky smile, “I like it because it’s a bit of an emotional catharsis, it doesn’t matter if your voice cracks because you are crying and already an emotional mess.”
Before they head back to rehearsal, there's one last question: Dear Evan Hansen starts with Evan writing a letter to himself. It begins, naturally enough, with the title of the show followed by 'Today is going to be a good day because...' So, what would they write in such a letter to themselves?
"Keeping in line with the show, My letter would say, ‘Dear Ryan Kopel, today is going to be a good day because you can take each day at a time, every hour as it comes’," says the Scot.
"Mine would read, 'Dear Sonny Monaghan, today is going to be a good day because this is what and where you want to be and you should know that you have worked hard and deserve to be here'."
With opening night fast approaching, both admit that despite their reassuring words to themselves, the nerves are sure to kick in on the big night, but even that is a good thing.
“I kind of live in a state of constant nerves anyway,” laughs Kopel, “but nerves before a performance are definitely a good thing. It means you care, so I'll harness them and let them kick me up a gear...”
“It’s like athletes," nods Monaghan, “You have to use your nerves and adrenaline to reach your peak performance...”
Kopel laughs, “Yes, and then keep it there for another two and half hours.”

MAKING IT HAPPEN
I don’t
know about
you, but I like to scatter my social life with some great things to look forward to. Don’t get me wrong - I absolutely love spontaneity, however key dates in the diary mean you don’t miss out on some of the things you love doing. And tickets go quickly!
2025 brings us new events in the first half of the year to get excited about; events to invite a few friends along to share the journey! First up is Norwich Craft Beer Festival (3 - 4 May), brought to us by Toby and Dom of Sir Toby’s Beers and Bier Draak on King Street- so we are in safe hands. This is perfectly timed for the first May bank holiday Monday to recover!
The Waterfront in Norwich is the venue, offering four sessions to choose from (afternoons and evenings) with tickets starting at £9.90 (no drinks) and VIP tickets from £42.90 with drinks included (excluding the Waterfront Bar). £154 gets you a VIP ticket for the whole weekend. With a beer garden and an array of New England IPA’s, pale ales, imperial stouts, wacky sours, lagers and specialty imports, food trucks and DJs it sounds like a perfect way to spend mid spring by the river Wensum. And if you don’t fancy beer, you can still enjoy everything as The
Waterfront bar will be open if your tipple is more spirits and prosecco!
If all of this sounds like a big investment, then an alternative is Pub & Paddle, which re-opens 6 April.
Moorings are by The Ribs of Beef by Fye Bridge. Prices start at £22 for 4-5 hours and you decide where you want to paddle and which riverside pubs to stop at for refreshment following all your hard work! It’s not hard work.
Hot on the heels of the beer festival, we then lead into 17 heady days of international arts from the fabulous Norfolk & Norwich Festival (9 - 25 May). Appreciating that bank holiday to build up our strength.
The free opening evening on Friday 9 May (6pm, The Forum) will see High Voltage- a spectacular sight with 150 guitarists from around the region- rocking out! Following, see Speak Percussion and All the Queen’s Men March Statican immersive sonic experience reimagining the concept of a marching band. Then the whole weekend will see free performance and entertainment across Norwich, including Chinese pole acrobatics, dance, Hip-Hop theatre, an interactive installation involving the public and water- there’s also singing trapeze.
Throughout the festival, there’s a
good sprinkling of local contributors and co-created projects. Whilst the festival is about international arts, it’s inclusive and is a very important cultural celebration where local artists of all ages and, in fact, non-artists (the opening event is an example of this) can get involved. These are big opportunities for every age and great experiences for everyone.
The Festival’s Create & Share programme sees year-round work in schools and communities which often go unseen. This year the curtain will be pulled back. The Norwich Nine (11 May, 5pm, The Garage, £15); MONSTERS (21 May, 11.30am, free, Cinema City) and Sea Like A Mirror (9-25 May, free, Ther Forum) are some of the highlights featuring East Anglian talent.
6 April also sees the re-opening of Dragon Hall for the summer, home of contemporary literary house The National Centre for Writing. Here you can pop in for free, enjoy their beautiful and peaceful courtyard garden and take a free tour. See www. nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk/whats-on/ for all the details.
Next in the diary is the return of Norwich Jazz Festival (15-24 May) after a 20-year hiatus. Norwich Arts Centre celebrates 45 years in 2025 and along
with its usual fantastic line up of live performance, its new Jazz Festival progamme will also see performances at Epic, Anteros and more.
The festival will showcase the best UK and international Jazz musicians, including the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (22 May, 8pm, Epic Studios tickets from £14, under 26 £6.50) and Ebi Soda (17 May, 8pm, NAC, £18.50).
Norwich Wine Week returns 18th29th June 2025 with a slightly new look. Kicking off with Norwich Wine Week Uncorked at Dragon Hall (18 June, 6pm - 9pm, tickets on sale now). The opening event will be an evening of curated wines from Norfolk, the region and around the world. This being the perfect backdrop for modern day wine makers and merchants because Dragon Hall is the only surviving medieval trading hall built by an individual merchant in Western Europe.
The rest of the week will see an exciting series of unique wine-related experiences popping up in venues across the city. Throughout, we will discover a diverse range of experiences, from tastings and masterclasses to special menus and exclusive discounts. As usual there will be something for everyone.
English Wine Week (17-25 June) and Norwich Wine Week are a timestamp for us, several days to shine a spotlight on our talented wine makers and local vineyards who are producing awardwinning wine. Particular favourites of mine discovered during previous weeks are Flint’s Fumé (£19.99) and their Charmat Rose (£22.99).
I can’t let this month pass by without some news from Norfolk’s amazing local food scene. The Last Wine Bar and Restaurant has recently celebrated its first birthday and with al fresco seating at their lovely St George’s location- a glass of wine and a plate of something nice is very appealing. As is their cocktail list and happy hour (Wednesday - Saturday, 5pm - 7pm, two cocktails for £14)!
Latest news from the 2AA Rosette WinePress restaurant at The Maids Head Hotel is that they have a new chef. Norwich-local Alastair Grand is heading up a new team elevating their fine dining experience even further with French classics and a modern twist.
Finally, Benedicts celebrates its 10th birthday in June. This feels like a birthday I need to get in on! Richard
Bainbridge has also contributed to The Great British Menu’s new cookbook (GBM is celebrating 20 years this year) with his recipe for his Nanny Bush’s Trifle, which incidentally won Richard a place on the banqueting team in 2015. So that’s three anniversaries in one. The universe is telling us something.

Thereis something about those first daring daffodils, peeping through the gloom and baring their brave yellow faces to the world, that sets my heart aflutter. Hello, Spring. We have been waiting for you. If, like me, you’re ready to celebrate the soulsoothing shades of the season, here are some simple ways to incorporate Spring into your life and brighten your everyday.
Floral
This tulip-printed bed linen combines the natural softness of muslin with a delicate print that is sure to add a fresh feel to your Springtime sleep. Available in a range of sizes from a junior single all the way up to a king, this unique bedding can be found at laredoute.co.uk, with prices starting at £52.99. It’s giving all the understated floral feels.
These Lucy Tiffney designed plates are serving modern Little-House-onthe-Prairie with a bold twist on a classic motif. Available at Next, a set of 4 will set you back £40, an investment that will see you through the Spring/Summer season ensuring you dine in style from Easter lunch to the dying rays of your last Summer BBQ.
This Belfort floral jug has got me identifying as a Provençal French farm girl, who runs through the fields, gathering up wildflowers ready to display on my white-shuttered windowsill, as the sun sets across the horizon. I’ve digressed. Grab yourself some floral chic to fuel your own delusions, at dibor.co.uk for £38.
A picture speaks a thousand words and this twin set of flower prints from Dunelm tells everyone that you’re embracing the thrall of the season. Produced in a statement size but with the gentlest hues of blue and green, they will draw attention in the best way. Like a Humane Society demonstration or Judi Dench. Available framed for your convenience, they’re £60.00 for the pair.
These bright and bold Lilian cotton bath towels from anthropologie.com will wash away any remnants of the dreary winter blues leaving you revitalized to spring forward this daylight savings time. Say mahalo to your bathing space with prices starting from £18.
Urbanoutfitters.com is uniting function and flowers with this pretty rose printed carafe. Perfect for the It-girl-about-theoffice or for adorning your bedside with blooms. You’ll be vibratin’ and hydratin’ on another level with this literal rose tinted glass. Sweet and stylish at £15.
A geometric take on the floral trend lands (literally) on your doorstep in the shape of this Oliver Bonas tile border doormat. At only £29.50, this cutesy porch adornment will remind you why you love to go home before you’ve even crossed the threshold.
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, this antique rose print biscuit barrel from emmabridgewater.co.uk is giving life. Retailing at £20, it’s an inexpensive way to brighten your kitchen with some floral flair. And anything that’s full of biscuits is a winner in my book.
You’ll be living your best cottagecore life with these hibiscus flower lamp shades. Available from lunaralights.co.uk, the delicate coloured glass shades will add vibrancy and a fairy flex that’s sure to create a talking point at any social occasion. On sale for less than half the price at £49.95, you’ll need to be quick to pick these petals up.
Ok, that’s not actually 50. There’s some creative maths in the title I’ll grant you but you won’t be hard pressed to find the other 40 with the barest of effort.
If subtlety is more your scene, notonthehighstreet.com is serving Spring cuteness from £15 with these gorgeous hand painted wildflower candles. Elevate a dining experience or brighten the corner of a room in dainty florals and comforting candlelight. *Sighs in snowdrops*
So, indulge and enjoy! Spring is here to remind you that life is naturally beautiful and it’s time to embrace the coming season like those daring daffodils.

Although Rebecca has had a successful television and fi lm acting career, her fi rst love has always been art. She explains that she began developing her artistic career in 2020 during the COVID lockdown, and now has collectors all over the world, including in the USA, the Philippines, Finland, and Dubai.
Working with acrylics, Rebecca draws inspiration from the tranquil Norfolk countryside and expansive coastline. She has been visiting Norfolk since childhood and, although originally from Nottingham and having lived in London, she now considers Norfolk home.
The demand for Rebecca’s artwork is growing signifi cantly, and her three most recent collections—Set Sail, Koi Fish Collection, and Yellow Brick Road—are nearly sold out.
The Set Sail series was born during the COVID pandemic, intended to bring light to the world during a time of darkness. It symbolizes hope, reminding viewers that although they may be going through rough times, calmer waters lie ahead.
The Koi Fish Collection emerged as a spin-off from Set Sail when a collector commissioned a koi fi sh painting. This evolved into a collection of its own, symbolizing the power and passion of the fi sh.
The Yellow Brick Road collection represents the meeting of the physical and spiritual worlds. This concept was deeply personal for Rebecca, as it was inspired by her near-death experiences as a teenager. After
suff ering a severe asthma attack, she was revived three times and, during these episodes, had glimpses of the spiritual realm.
The gallery opening attracted some of Norfolk’s most esteemed local business owners, including Laura Ruddy, the renowned interior designer and co-owner of Norfolk Luxury Furniture. Rebecca was also delighted to welcome her friend and photographer Angela Adams, who attended with the lovely Elizabeth Holbrook of Reymerston Hall.
Rebecca has said that Reepham is a wonderful location, and she looks forward to building her client portfolio while helping to establish Number 21 as a premier gallery in the region.
The opening date—21 March—was specifi cally chosen to coincide with the International Day of Colour, making it the perfect occasion to join forces with the brilliant local artist Lucy Loveheart.
Number 21 Gallery has a rich history, having once exhibited the work of Terry Pastor, the renowned artist famous for creating David Bowie’s iconic album covers. Reepham itself has also had its moment in the spotlight, serving as a fi lming location for Poirot in the 1990s, where David Suchet was seen walking its charming cobbled streets.

Why Colour Analysis is a Game-Changer for Weddings Love The Colour of
Welcome to this month’s edition of InspireMe PR, where I highlight inspiring people, places, and ideas that make a difference. This time, I’m exploring the transformative power of colour analysis and why it should be an essential part of wedding planning.
When planning a wedding, every detail counts— from the dress and flowers to the décor and bridal party outfits. But what if there was a way to ensure that every element of your special day not only looked beautiful but was truly flattering and harmonious? This is where colour analysis comes in.
Professional colour consultant Hayley Cubitt is leading the way in bringing this concept to the wedding industry. Her expertise is helping couples design weddings that are both stunning and naturally cohesive by using colour analysis to complement their features.
Why Colour Analysis is Essential for Weddings
Colour analysis goes beyond choosing your favourite shades—it’s about identifying the colours that enhance your natural features. As Hayley explains, “Everyone has a unique undertone—either warm or cool—and fits into one of four seasonal categories. Wearing the right colours can elevate your natural beauty, while the wrong ones can overwhelm or wash you out.”
For brides, grooms, and even guests, understanding your seasonal colour palette ensures you look your best in wedding photos and feel confident on the big day.
Hayley Cubitt The Colour Consultant
The Four Seasons of Wedding Colour Palettes
Everyone falls into one of four colour seasons—Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. Within each season, there are sub-seasons—Light, Deep, Bright or Muted—that refine the colours that suit you best.
Hayley shares how these seasons translate into wedding colour schemes:
Spring Brides & Grooms: Warm, fresh, and vibrant hues such as peach, coral, light golds, and warm pastels.
Summer Brides & Grooms: Cool, soft, and romantic tones like dusky rose, lavender, muted blues, and silvery greys for an elegant look.
Autumn Brides & Grooms: Rich, warm, and earthy shades like terracotta, olive greens, mustard, and burnt orange create a cosy yet luxurious atmosphere.
Winter Brides & Grooms: Cool, bold, and dramatic colours such as jewel tones, icy blues, crisp whites, and deep emeralds create a striking visual impact.
SEASONAL COLOURS
Bringing Harmony to Your Wedding Colours
One of the most exciting benefits of colour analysis is its ability to create harmony between the couple. If a bride falls into the cool Summer category and her groom is a warm Autumn, Hayley helps identify shades that can bridge the gap.
“There’s always a way to make it work,” Hayley says. “For instance, a Summer bride can opt for a cool soft white dress, while an Autumn groom could wear a rich brown suit with a tie in her colour palette.”
Some couples even go a step further, asking their guests to dress in their recommended colours for a fully cohesive look. From bridesmaids’ dresses and bouquets to invitations and table settings, colour analysis can enhance every detail of your big day.
“It makes decisions easier,” Hayley explains. “Once you know your colours, it narrows down your choices, simplifying shopping for dresses, suits, flowers, and even jewellery.”
The Role of Colour Analysis in Wedding Styling
Wedding stylists and planners are increasingly incorporating colour analysis into their services. A carefully selected colour palette can:
Enhance natural beauty: Ensuring the couple and wedding party wear shades that flatter their skin’s undertones, making them look radiant and glowing.
Create harmony in wedding photos: Complementary colours result in timeless, beautiful photographs.
Personalise the wedding experience: Each couple is unique, and colour analysis offers a bespoke approach rather than relying on generic trends.
Improve overall aesthetic balance: From table settings to floral arrangements, colour analysis ensures a cohesive visual experience.
Beyond the Bride: A ColourCoordinated Wedding Party
While the focus is often on the bride, colour analysis benefits the entire wedding party. Grooms and groomsmen can select suits and accessories that highlight their best features, while mothers of the bride and groom can confidently choose colours that make them feel their best. Even guests can benefit by ensuring they look great in the wedding photos.
By using colour analysis, your wedding can become a cohesive, visually stunning event where everyone feels comfortable and confident.
The Bridal Party Puzzle: Keeping It Cohesive
One common challenge couples face is coordinating colours across the entire wedding party, especially when different members have different seasonal palettes.
“If a bride is a Spring, with bright warm characteristics, but her mother is an Autumn, with more muted features, they can still find common ground through shared warmth,” Hayley explains. “If their palettes completely clash, I help them find universal or bridging colours that work for both.”
Couples can book individual, joint or small group consultations to ensure their wedding look is balanced and complementary. Hayley also offers takeaway colour palettes and a wedding dress shopping service to guide brides toward the most flattering shade.
Is This Trend Catching On?
Colour analysis isn’t yet a mainstream part of wedding planning, but Hayley believes that’s about to change. “If I can get in early—at bridal fairs or consultations when couples first start planning—I can help them make better, long-lasting decisions that will reflect beautifully in their photos and memories.”
More couples are now seeing the practical and aesthetic benefits of colour analysis, not just for fashion but for confidence and cohesion. Plus, it makes a photographer’s job easier, as wellcoordinated colours create more visually stunning images.
Hayley’s Top Wedding Colour Tips
For any bride or groom considering colour analysis, Hayley offers this advice: Get your colours done early – Ideally before engagement shoots, so you can carry the colours throughout your entire wedding.
Avoid trends – Just because a certain colour is in fashion doesn’t mean it will flatter you. Timeless always wins.
Consider every detail – From the dress and suit to flowers and décor, cohesive colours elevate the entire aesthetic.
Hayley is based in Lowestoft, Su olk, and o ers in-person consultations. You can find her on Instagram @the.colour.consultant_ or contact her directly at 07438 831121.
So, if you’re planning a wedding and want to ensure you look and feel your best, colour analysis might just be the secret ingredient you never knew you needed.

RHUBARB, CUSTARD & HOT CROSS BUN PUDDING
Use this recipe as a blueprint, then let the season and mood steer you. Swap the baked rhubarb for tinned cherries in syrup (no need to bake them first) for a Black Forest spin; scatter small cubes of marzipan over the surface before sugaring and baking... there are so many delicious options. Leftover brioche or croissants also work well – don’t forget you can freeze odds and ends until you have enough
Ingredients: Serves: 6
Prep Time: 25 minutes Cook Time: 1 hr 10 mins
• 400g rhubarb, cut into 3-4cm lengths
• 150g golden caster sugar
• 1 large orange, zest and juice
• 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out and reserved
• 4 day-old hot cross buns (250g), each sliced into three horizontally
• 50g unsalted butter, softened
• 300ml single cream
• 200ml whole milk
• 3 eggs
METHOD:
Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. In a medium baking dish, toss the rhubarb with 80g sugar, the orange zest and juice, and the empty vanilla pod (reserve the seeds). Cover tightly with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the rhubarb is tender, but still holding its shape. Set aside to cool (the cooked rhubarb can now be chilled in its syrup for up to 3 days, if needed). Drain the rhubarb in a sieve over a bowl to reserve the syrup. Lightly
Drain the rhubarb in a sieve over a bowl to reserve the syrup. Lightly spread the slices of hot cross bun with 45g butter and use the remaining 5g to butter the insides of a roughly 20cm x 15cm (1.3 litre) baking dish.
In a large jug, use a fork or whisk to combine 50g sugar with the cream, milk, eggs and reserved vanilla seeds. Layer the buttered bun slices in the dish at a 45° angle, interspersed with baked rhubarb pieces. Slowly pour the custard into the dish, so that it soaks into the buns. Scatter the surface with the remaining 20g sugar. At this point, it’s best to chill the pudding for 30 minutes to soak up the custard. When you’re almost ready to cook, preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden and puffedup. Leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving warm with the reserved rhubarb syrup.

DIPPY EGGS & SOLDIERS
Serves: 4
Thisdelicious breakfast recipe features perfectly soft boiled free range eggs with a gorgeous, caramel syrup and classic French toast for dipping. A twist on the traditional egg and soldiers and a Sunday morning treat that satisfies any sweet tooth!
A Sunday morning treat that satisfies any sweet tooth
For the Caramel
Ingredients:
• 100g Caster Sugar
• 1 Vanilla Pod, Split
• 100ml Water
• Juice of 1 Lemon
For the Soft Boiled Eggs
Ingredients:
• 4 Free Range Eggs
METHOD:
Put the caster sugar & vanilla pod into a heavy-based pan and dissolve over a gentle heat. Once the sugar has dissolved and turned a light caramel colour, turn off the heat and add the water and lemon juice - the caramel will split at this point so be careful. Whisk gently until you have a syrupy consistency, then remove the vanilla pod and pour the caramel into a jug to serve.
METHOD:
Carefully put the 4 eggs into a pan and cover with cold water, then place the pan on a medium heat and as soon as the water comes to the boil, set a timer for 1 minute. Lift the eggs out of the water (or they will continue to cook), and serve as soon as possible.
For the French Toast
Ingredients:
• 2 Medium Free Range Eggs
• 20g Milk
• 4 Slices of Bread
• A Knob of Butter or Vegetable Oil
• 20g Icing Sugar
METHOD:
Whisk the eggs & milk together until thoroughly incorporated. Dip each slice of bread into the eggy milk, allowing the bread to soak up some of the mixture. Melt some butter (or vegetable oil) over a large skillet on a medium high heat. Add as many slices of bread onto the skillet as will fit at a time. Fry until brown on both sides, flipping the bread when necessary. Remove from the skillet and dredge with the icing sugar. Serve immediately with the dippy eggs and caramel sauce.
From Brick to Butler:
How George Colley & Nathaniel Crothers Built the Queues Outside Tallow
Afternearly a decade shaping some of Norfolk’s best-loved food spots—Brick, Yard, The Weavers Arms, and the nationally-stocked Brick Frozen—entrepreneurs Nathaniel Crothers and George Colley's latest restaurant is something different. Tallow, a refined 45-cover steak restaurant on St Benedicts Street, is a study in precision: stripped-back, quietly confident, and unapologetically focused. We sat down with the pair to talk about the journey so far, and how this new space captures everything they’ve learned.
P&F: Tallow feels very different from your past projects. Was that the goal?
NC: 100%. We didn’t want to repeat anything we’d done before. Brick is high energy—music up, pizzas flying. Yard has a looser, creative vibe. The Weavers is classic pub, no-nonsense. With Tallow, we wanted to reign it in. Less noise, fewer options, more control. It’s mature in the best way.
GC: We’ve spent years doing volume, thousands of pizzas, fast service, big teams. We've taken those experiences and refined them into Tallow. The menu is short because it can be. We don’t need to impress with variety. We’re impressing with clarity and confidence. There’s nothing on the menu that doesn’t need to be there.
P&F: Nathaniel, Tallow has a very clear identity. Was that intentional from the start?
NC: Definitely. We didn’t want to make just another restaurant, we wanted it to feel anchored. The name, the menu, the interior, it’s all very specific. We worked closely with graphic designer, Oliver Milner-Smith from inception to achieve a clear brand led identity, and by defining the vision early on, it made a lot of questions through development much easier to answer.
P&F: Why steak?
GC: Because when it’s done right, there’s nothing better. But also because it’s surprisingly rare to find somewhere that really respects it. We’re not messing around with flamboyant cuts or endless sauces. Just good beef, the right temperature, and proper seasoning. It’s a commitment to restraint, really.
P&F: What’s been the biggest surprise since opening?
GC: How quickly people got it. We opened in January, and it just took off. Through almost entirely word of mouth, it’s been humbling. Norwich has such a hungry, curious food scene, and people here care about where things come from. That’s a dream for someone like me.
P&F: What’s something you’re proud of that has nothing to do with food?
NC: The team. They care so much. Every plate, every pour, every guest that walks through the door, it matters to them. That culture doesn’t just happen. You build it, refine it, encourage it. And I’m proud we’ve built that here.
P&F: What was the vision for the food?
GC: Simplicity, but done with total intention. The menu’s short on purpose. We’re working with excellent produce and letting it speak. The butler’s steak is our centrepiece, cooked right, rested properly, seasoned well. But then the sides matter just as much. We treat mash with as much respect as we treat the beef.
NC: There’s nowhere to hide with a menu like this. You can’t phone anything in. Every plate has to be clean, confident, and quietly impressive.
P&F: And how about the experience front-of-house?
NC: It’s all about rhythm. The flow of the night. Lighting, music, timing, how guests are greeted, how often they're checked on, when that glass of wine lands. That’s where we live. We want people to feel relaxed but looked after. You won’t hear someone shouting “service!”—but you’ll feel the momentum behind the scenes.
P&F: What did you take from Brick, Yard, and your other venues that fed into this?
GC: Brick taught us how to move fast and keep quality high under pressure. Yard taught us about layering a room, music, lighting, service style, to create atmosphere. The Weavers showed us how to work with tradition without feeling stuck in it. And Brick Frozen taught us how to systemise and scale.
NC: We’ve both made every mistake you can make in hospitality. But we’ve also done the reps. Tallow is tighter because of it. We knew exactly what we wanted to build this time, and what we didn’t.
P&F: You’ve decided not to take reservations—Tallow is walk-in only. Why make that choice?
NC: It just felt right for the size and energy of the room. We didn’t want this to be a place you have to book three weeks in advance. It’s not meant to be precious. You finish work, you’re in town, you’re hungry—you come in. That’s it.
GC: And from the kitchen, it’s actually a more natural flow. We cook for the room, not the clock. The vibe is better, the food’s better, and the pressure is where it should be—on doing things properly, in the moment.
P&F: What does a great night at Tallow look like for you?
GC: Smooth service. No re-fires. A steak landing perfectly pink with a hot plate and the sides landing within 30 seconds. That's it. Doesn’t sound sexy, but it’s hard to nail night after night, and that’s the satisfaction.
NC: I know it’s a good night when I look around the room and everyone’s leaning into the table and people are queuing at the door. It's a simple goal, that takes a mountain of work to achieve.
P&F: Any advice for someone thinking about opening a restaurant?
NC: Be obsessed. The margins are thin, the work is constant, and the public are sharp. If you don’t love it, it’ll chew you up. But if you do, it’s the best feeling in the world when a guest has a perfect night and tells you so.

We enjoy working closely with our community and promoting it in any way we can.
We have our Good for Good quality mark for our work with the Norfolk Community Foundation, close connections with many charities and several members of our team play sport in the local area.
It is important to us to help and invest wherever we can, so it was a privilege to be asked to support one of the UK’s most iconic fairground rides as it gears up to welcome families for the 2025 season.
We are the first business in its 76-yearhistory to sponsor The Snails at Joyland in Great Yarmouth, in a partnership ensuring the unique and beloved attraction continues to thrill for years to come.

“These rides are one of a kind vintage ride, they take a lot of work, e ort and money to maintain, so any income we can get is a huge bonus for us.”
My team, based in Gorleston, have worked with the owners of Joyland for more than a decade as its accountants and business advisors – and now we can add ‘snail sponsor’ to our remit.
As The Snails travel round the tracks, you may spot our logo on the back of each one, but more importantly it’s a pleasure to be able to support such an iconic and celebrated ride, especially given the significance of The Snails to Great Yarmouth and its heritage.
The Snails were designed and built by Manager Mikey Cole’s great grandfather Horace Cole at the family engineering company H. Cole and Co. on Steam Mill Lane in Great Yarmouth.
The original track with the first five snails was installed in 1948 and opened during the summer of 1949.
People that rode The Snails in the 1950s and 1960s took their children and now they take their grandchildren. All ages can enjoy it, and it doesn’t matter if you are five, 55 or 85. I would encourage everyone to support their own local communities at any opportunity.
Mikey Cole, Manager at Joyland said: “Stephenson Smart have been our accountants for more than 10 years and we have a brilliant relationship with them. It started out as a bit of a jokey idea that they should sponsor the snails, but then we quickly realised that it could be a great idea.
“These rides are one of a kind vintage ride, they take a lot of work, e ort and money to maintain, so any income we can get is a huge bonus for us.
“If we can attract more sponsorship to help on our other rides so we can keep them going for future generations, then why not.”
Joyland is open weekends until the Easter holidays and will then open daily all the way through until the end of October.
Stephenson Smart has seven offices spread across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, providing accountancy services ranging from business start-up advice, support to owner managed businesses and tax advice to individuals, including inheritable tax, probate, and estates.

Easter Empire Biscuits
Alice Rebecca Talbot owner of ART’s – Craft Kitchen
The queen of preserves shares another seasonal recipe
These biscuits are fun for the whole family this Easter— have a play and make your own springtime treats!
INGREDIENTS:
Makes approx. 10
For the biscuits:
• 225g plain flour
• 175g unsalted butter
• 130g caster sugar
• 1 egg yolk
For the filling:
• 50g butter
• 90g icing sugar
• 4-5 teaspoons of either ART’s Bramble, Damson, Merry Berry Jam, or Jolly Jam
METHOD:
Preheat the oven to 180°C and line two baking trays. Put the flour and butter into a mixer with the dough attachment and mix until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and egg yolk, then continue mixing until the crumbs form a dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and workable. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.
Roll out the dough quite thinly. Using your chosen Easterthemed cookie cutters (e.g., eggs, bunnies), cut out your shapes. Ensure you cut two of each design to create biscuit sandwiches. Place the biscuits on the trays
and bake for 12 minutes, or until pale golden. Once baked, transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely.
While the biscuits cool, make the buttercream by beating the butter and icing sugar together in a bowl until creamy and smooth (you can use a mixer for ease). Add the icing sugar gradually to prevent it from going everywhere.
Using a palette knife, spread a little buttercream on one half of each biscuit shape, then spoon your chosen ART’s jam on top. Place the other half on top and press down gently.
Enjoy decorating the biscuits with your family and icing them as you like!

I love to express my creativity wherever I can and nothing pleases me more than creating a fabulous space to enjoy a celebratory meal with loved ones.
In the world of home decor, personal touches can elevate a space making it feel uniquely yours. Recently, I embarked on a creative journey to design an Easter table, that not only reflects my style, but also brings warmth and character to my dining area over the festive period. Here’s a glimpse into my process and the final result that has become the centre piece of many gatherings.
The Inspiration
Every great decor starts with inspiration. I drew mine from the beauty of nature and my Easters as a child. I wanted to create a setup that would seamlessly blend elegance with a touch of coziness. Think earthy tones, bright colours and cuteness. This vision led me to select a colour palette of muted woodland greens, bright pastels and meadow browns, all reminiscent of a classic but classy Easter.
The Materials
To achieve the desired look, I gathered a mix of materials that would complement each other while providing an inviting atmosphere. Here’s a run down of what I used:
Table Runner: I chose a soft linen table runner in a blush pink, adding a natural element that softens the table's surface and acts as a subtle backdrop for other decor.
Centerpiece: A mixture of many items four greenery garland, two Easter egg garlands, 30 individual colour eggs, little wicker baskets filled with small individual eggs matching the other eggs keeping it all connected. Two large grass affect rabbits with six small matching rabbits giving a family feel along with all there carrots of course! I have also intertwined micro LED lights to add that last little touch for the last spring evenings.
Candles: To create a warm ambiance, I incorporated an assortment of candles in varying heights. I opted for gold pillar candles holders matching with the cut really cutlery, placed strategically along the table. Their flickering light adds a layer of intimacy perfect for any occasion.
Greenery: To complete the look, I used small pots of succulents and fresh herbs, such as rosemary and thyme. These not only provide a burst of greenery but also infuse the scene with delightful scents.
Window pieces: I found the beautiful wooden branched bunny in a local shop to me and just had to get him! I then dressed him with small little artificial carrots and wood I found in my garden that was growing moss on them already which really added that finally little touch.
The Assembly
With all my components ready, it was time to assemble. I started by laying down the table runner, ensuring it was centred and had enough overhang on each side. Next, I placed the garlands in the middle, artfully arranging the eggs, baskets and trees for a natural yet curated look.
Following this, I scattered the candles along the length of the table. I mixed taller candles with shorter ones, creating an organic asymmetry that draws the eye but feels effortless. Lastly, I nestled the baskets filled with mini eggs around the candles, adding layers and depth to the decor.
The Impact
Upon completing my table decor, the transformation was nothing short of magical. The combination of colours, textures, and scents created an inviting atmosphere that effortlessly draws guests in. Whether it’s a casual dinner with family or a festive gathering with friends, this decor has become a conversation starter and a source of joy.
Final Thoughts
Creating this table decor has not only enhanced my dining experience but also allowed me to express my creativity and taken my back to my childhood. It serves as a reminder that with a little imagination and some thoughtful choices, anyone can transform their spaces into beautiful retreats. So, gather your favourite materials, let your style shine, and start creating a decor that is as unique as you are!

How to choose
the right agent for you…
A FRANK guide to the good, the bad & outright ugly…
Natalie Ward-Kerr Founder and Director
Spring
is finally in the air and with that comes the most traditional time of the year when sellers choose to list their home, gardens are beginning to bloom and the warmer air can’t help but lift our spirits, but where do you start the journey to select the right agent for you.
First step is to banish the massive mis-conception that all agents are the same, because we are most definitely not. When considering the best agent for your needs, it is essential to do your research and understand the differences between
the larger corporate firms to the typically smaller but local agencies. Whilst the brand power and target driven sales ideology that the big corporate cats offer can appear somewhat tempting, this extensively staged production can often come at the expense of personalised service and essentially a lack of personal investment to your individual needs. In contrast, working with a smaller independent firm is often known to foster a much more hands on approach, tailoring services to meet the specific needs of each and every client and in doing so building long standing relationships where no one is just a number. The larger the firm, the more layers of different roles and departments which can lead to slower response times and less of a personal knowledge of each home and the clients positions whereby dealing with different staff members day to day can eventuate in hugely disproportionate levels of service.
We would always suggest arranging three different valuations, this ordinarily gives you the opportunity to meet each representative, discuss fees and contractual ties and explore the varying valuations.
Some key points of research you can conduct yourself prior to these appointments, firstly track the number of reductions each agent has
encountered with their current listing portfolio, this will undoubtedly prove a an interesting trend when you compare your valuations from agent to agent. Secondly, take a look at how many properties they currently have for sale, if it’s a high number I would beg the question, what time do they have to manage more?
One of the most frustrating aspects we tend to encounter at Frank, is hearing the horror stories of what is known as your ‘tie in period’ to your chosen agent. Naturally, when discussing choice of agent, fees are the most frequent and commonly asked question which is obviously a big consideration, however the lesser known aspect of the contract is the length of time to which you are contractually bound to that agent. In other words, you may find yourself feeling extremely dissatisfied with your selected agent merely a couple of weeks into marketing, then when you question giving notice you discover you are tied in for as much as 22 weeks and unable to leave. Ethically, this is one of the contractual elements we strongly disagree with at Frank Estate Agency. It is our belief that to retain your business we should be working our socks off to keep you happy as opposed to depending on the handcuffs these contractual ties bring, we therefore abolished any sense of tie in to our contract, allowing our clients the
freedom to leave at any given point. One of the biggest factors we believe should be considered are the people. Selling and buying a home can be a notoriously stressful time and the team you surround yourself in can be make an incredible difference for your experience. Trust and knowledge are two of the biggest key factors to consider and actually, do you like them?! Ask yourself, do you think this individual is going to be as personally invested in this as you? Because they should be. We never underestimate the privilege of being the chosen agent and treat each new listing as though it was our home, that just how we think it should be.
To ask any questions relating to listing your home, feel free to pop us a call anytime on 01502 800451 for some gentle but FRANK advice.
Most importantly don’t be afraid to ask any questions, no such thing as a wrong or bad one…

The Ultimate Guide to Redesigning your shower
With a Ripples bathroom design specialist
Want to refresh your shower space but don’t know where to start? With so many styles and options to choose from, it can be hard to know what will work best in your room. Here, Liam, showroom owner of Ripples Norwich, talks through the top things to consider when designing a shower space.
Enclosed vs. Walk-In Showers: Which is Right for You?
One of the first decisions to make is whether to opt for an enclosed or walk-in shower. Each has its advantages:
Enclosed Showers: Ideal for maintaining warmth and containing water, enclosed showers are perfect for smaller bathrooms or those wanting a more private feel. Modern designs often feature seamless glass panels to enhance the sense of space while keeping the rest of the bathroom dry.
Walk-In Showers: A growing trend, walk-in showers offer a sleek, open feel and are particularly useful for accessibility. They eliminate the need for a threshold, making them an excellent choice for families with young children, elderly users, or those wanting to future-proof their bathroom.
Brassware & Tiles: The Details That Make the Difference
Brassware and tiles set the tone for your shower space. In 2025, we’re seeing a move towards luxurious yet practical finishes:
• Brassware: Brushed brass and matte black remain popular, adding a timeless elegance. For a softer aesthetic, polished nickel and warm bronze
are making a strong comeback, offering versatility and durability.
• Tiles: Large-format tiles continue to dominate, reducing grout lines for a cleaner look and easier maintenance. Textured tiles add depth and character, while neutral earthy tones, such as warm greys, beiges, and soft greens, are trending for a calming spa-like atmosphere.
Consider Who Will Use the Shower
When designing your shower, it’s crucial to think about the needs of all users. For families with children, a walk-in shower with a hand-held shower head is practical for washing little ones, while non-slip flooring and easy-to-clean surfaces ensure safety and convenience
Elderly or mobility-impaired users benefit from a barrier-free walk-in shower with a built-in seat, grab bars, thermostatic controls, and anti-slip tiles for enhanced safety. Busy professionals may prefer a high-pressure rainfall shower with smart controls, combining luxury with efficiency.
Trends for 2025
Bathrooms are evolving into wellness retreats, and showers are at the forefront of this shift. Some key trends to consider:
• Smart Showers: Digital controls allow you to preset temperatures, water pressure, and even lighting preferences for a personalised experience.
• Sustainable Solutions: Water-saving shower heads and eco-friendly materials are increasingly in demand as homeowners prioritise sustainability without compromising on style.
• Minimalist Frameless Designs: Frameless glass enclosures with hidden drainage and integrated storage keep the look clean and contemporary.
• Natural Elements: Incorporating stone, woodeffect tiles, and greenery into your shower space enhances relaxation and brings a biophilic element to the design.
Redesigning your shower is an investment in both comfort and style. By carefully considering layout, brassware, tile choices, and the needs of all users, you can create a space that is not only on-trend for 2025 but also timeless and practical for years to come
Whether you’re aiming for a high-end spa feel or a family-friendly design, thoughtful planning will ensure your shower remains a highlight of your home.

Spring Blooms
by Liz Mobbs thesouthwoldflowercompany.co.uk
Ihope you're enjoying this wonderful time of year as spring starts to awaken, bringing longer days, warmer weather, and fresh new growth. The garden is beginning to show signs of life, and there are plenty of ways to bring that seasonal beauty indoors by getting creative with fl owers, bulbs, moss, and twigs.
Tulips are everywhere at the moment—you’ll fi nd them at fl orists, supermarkets, and markets. While supermarkets may off er cheaper options, the quality often refl ects the price. Supermarket tulips are usually older, with smaller heads and weaker stems because they are force-grown for mass production. For the best quality, I recommend buying from a fl orist or market vendor who sources tulips from local British growers. These tulips have larger, stronger heads and
come in a stunning variety of colours, from fringed and double blooms to classic single varieties.
In this arrangement, I’m using tulips from our favourite Lincolnshire family growers— Smith & Munson. Their tulips are exceptional, with a fantastic selection of varieties and colours. Even when fully bloomed, their petals change colour and open up like lilies, providing at least two weeks of joy—sometimes even longer if kept in a cool environment, out of direct sunlight.
Instead of simply placing tulips in a vase, why not create a more dynamic arrangement by combining them with other seasonal bulbs like narcissus, muscari, or hyacinths? As the tulips fade, the bulbs will continue to bloom, extending the life of your display.
HERE’S HOW TO DO IT:
WHAT YOU NEED:
• A planter, basket, or pot you already have
• A pack of 10 tulips
• Twigs for support
• A selection of moss
• 3 pots of bulbs (in the green), split up
• Agra wool
• Soil
• Grit for water drainage
INSTRUCTIONS:
Add a handful of grit to the base of your container to help with drainage.
Place a wet block of Agra wool in the middle, with soil around it (see Tip 1!).
Trim about 8 cm off the tulip stems and remove excess leaves (see Tip 2!).
Gently insert the tulips into the wet Agra wool, arranging them as you like. Split the bulbs and plant them around the edges, then add a little water. Cover the surface with moss for a natural, lush finish. Add foraged twigs from your garden to support the flowers. Water gently every five days.
TIPS:
Tip 1: Agra wool is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional floral foam. However, when wet, it can be tricky to insert stems. To avoid this, quickly dunk it in water for just two seconds—it will hold moisture for weeks!
Tip 2: Tulips continue growing after being cut, whether in a vase or Agra wool. Cutting the stems shorter may seem drastic, but it helps them remain upright and well-supported.
WHAT TO DO IN THE GREENHOUSE:
Now is the perfect time to start sowing your annual cut flower seeds. If you don’t have a greenhouse, a sunny windowsill will work just fine. For a steady supply of blooms through August, sow a batch this month, then repeat in March and April for successional planting.
Easy annuals to sow now:
• Larkspur • Cosmos
• Ammi • Nigella
• Zinnia
Spring is all about fresh starts and new beginnings—so get creative, enjoy the season, and bring the joy of flowers into your home!

Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home.
Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers.Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful.
Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...
Question – Who can drive a person’s Mobility Car? Can family, friends, neighbours, if needed or wanting to take a person with a disability out?
Answer - Only drivers approved by DLM’s criteria and named under the ‘permitted drivers’ section of the Certificate of Motor Insurance are covered to drive a Mobility vehicle. Many drivers assume that if they have their own fully comprehensive insurance cover they can drive a Scheme vehicle but unless they have been added to the lease as a driver they are not able to. Three named drivers for the vehicle are allowed, including the person with a disability.

Question – How can I find out which ‘Meals on Wheels Services’ are available in my area. I am thinking that there might be small, local ones rather than the larger, franchise ones which we would like to use?
Answer – Meals on Wheels UK is a website created by the University of Bristol which provides a searchable database of information on providers who deliver both fresh and frozen meals across the UK. Just put a postcode in, and all local and national providers will come up with contact details, website, etc.
Question – Where can I loan a wheelchair for usually weeks at a time only?
Answer - Wheelchairs can be hired from mobility businesses across the country but the British Red Cross provides wheelchair hire services across the UK. Their wheelchairs are suitable for anyone over the age of 5 and are available in a wide range of sizes, with fitted footrests as standard and free accessories such as leg elevators, cushions, and stump supports available to improve the comfort of the chair. Wheelchair hire is £22 a week with variable delivery and collection options available at £25 if applicable.

Many drivers assume that if they have their own fully comprehensive insurance cover they can drive a Scheme vehicle
