Sweetly British: A Taste of Home in Brookings-Harbor
BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
Are you craving a proper cuppa with a digestive biscuit, or perhaps some authentic Cadbury chocolate? Look no further than Sweetly British, a charming shop in Brookings-Harbor bringing the flavors of the United Kingdom (UK), Europe, Canada, Mexico and South Africa to the Oregon coast.
Owner Karen Roberts, who was born and raised in the UK, is celebrating nearly eight years in business and prides herself on offering authentic products. As a small-business owner, she manages everything herself, a testament to her dedication.
Roberts has been a fixture in the local business scene for a while, starting her journey in 2017 by selling products inside the Feather Your Nest store.
“Tammy [owner of Feather
Your Nest] allowed me to do that at her shop, then she recommended I go to the farmers market,” said Roberts, “and so I went there in March of 2018.”
She stayed at the farmers market for three and a half years, then moved to a small shop in Harbor for two years before moving to her current location in November 2023, which offers better exposure.
Sweetly British might be a bit tricky to find. It's in the Old PO building, in Harbor, but Robets assures customers she's just a phone call away and happy to give directions.
“I come here at least a couple times a month,” said BrookingsHarbor local Jacob Robinette.
“We’re going camping, so I wanted to surprise my wife with her favorite stuff.”
Inside, the shelves are stocked with a delightful array of

“My goods range from Cadbury, Nestle, Fry's, Mars and Milka chocolates,” shared Roberts. “We also have baked beans, sandwich spreads,

Brookings Unveils First Yard of the Month Winners for the Year

BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
The City of Brookings has officially kicked off its 23rd annual Yard of the Month program, established in 2002, by recognizing its first-ever recipients for outstanding property aesthetics.
This year, a residential property honoring a beloved memory and a popular local eatery have earned the inaugural honors.
The program, which runs from May through September, celebrates attractive residential and commercial properties located within city limits.
Monthly award recipients receive a $50 credit on their

water bill, a commemorative certificate and a sign proudly displayed on their property.
Barbara Price has been recognized for her deeply personal and beautifully executed home landscape.
In 2023, Barbara, alongside Bryan Rapraeger of BCR Land Management LLC, designed and brought to life a landscape that pays tribute to her late husband's dream of living by a river.
A unique feature of her design is a barrel from which green flowers emerge, eventually transforming into a vibrant blue when in full bloom, symbolizing the flowing water her husband cherished.
On the commercial front, Pancho's Restaurant & Bar received the nod for its inviting exterior.

Owner Scott Larson accepted the award on behalf of the Pancho's family, joined by General Manager Josh Pearson and Assistant Manager Maryjane Carlson. The recognition highlights Pancho's commitment to enhancing the city's commercial landscape.
The Yard of the Month program serves as a testament to the dedication of Brookings' property owners and businesses who go above and beyond to beautify their spaces, contributing to the overall attractiveness of the entire city.
Nominations may be sent to Brooklyn Osterhage at bosterhage@brookings.org.us or Michelle Robiduox at mrobidous@brookings.org.us. Nominees much be located within the city limits of Brookings.
Fatal Crash
Claims Port Orford Man on Highway 101
A Port Orford man died Thursday evening, May 15th, after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 in Curry County. Authorities say Wylie Joe Summerlin, 62, was not wearing a seatbelt.
Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to the scene near milepost 300 at approximately 6:21 p.m. A preliminary investigation indicates Summerlin was driving a northbound Jeep Patriot when he swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway. The vehicle left the highway and struck a tree.
Summerlin was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The crash did not impact traffic on Highway 101 during the on-scene investigation. OSP was assisted at the scene
by the Port Orford Fire Department, Port Orford Police Department, Curry County Sheriff's Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is a specialized team dedicated to investigating fatal and critically injurious collisions on Oregon's highways. The unit provides expertise in documenting, investigating, and analyzing complex motor vehicle crashes and crime scenes. CRU members receive specialized training in advanced measuring techniques and the use of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) for on-scene investigations. The team is comprised of ACTAR accredited collision reconstructionists and technical collision investigators deployed across the state.

On behalf of Brookings-Harbor High School, we would like to thank the Brookings Harbor Education Foundation (BHEF) for their continued commitment to expanding educational opportunities for our students.
This spring, a $1,200 grant from BHEF funded a field trip for students enrolled in college dual credit English and humanities courses to attend the

Master Gardeners Offer Free Advice Across Curry County
By Linda Lee Curry Coastal Pilot
hand!
The Curry County Master Gardener Association volunteers are making it easier than ever for local residents to cultivate success in their gardens, offering free, expert advice at libraries across the county. These dedicated volunteers, trained by the Oregon State University Extension Service, are a wealth of knowledge on a wide range of gardening topics. They are equipped to assist with everything from plant identification and tackling diseases to understanding vertical gardening, seasonal planting, plant propagation, insect issues and improving soil quality. They can also offer guidance on organic gardening and the benefits of companion planting. Beginning in April and running through October, the Master Gardeners are hosting plant clinics where a person can bring

a picture or two of your garden conundrums and get direct, science-based answers from experienced volunteers.
The following clinics will be offered:
• Chetco Public Library (Brookings): Third Monday of each month, April 21st through October 20th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• Curry Public Library (Gold Beach): Third Wednesday of each month, April 16th through October 15th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Sweetly British isn't just about the food, it's a community hub. Roberts enjoys sharing the daily samples and having a good chin wag with her customers.
"Meeting everybody, meeting the people, having a good laugh, having a good chat,” said Roberts. “That's what I like doing at the shop more than all the ordering and deliveries, but it’s always interesting to talk to the drivers and the people who come in every day."
Roberts notes that one of the reasons for her success is the difference in quality between American made chocolates, cookies and other products than those sold abroad as America uses a lot of artificial, low-quality ingredients filled with harmful dies and bioengineered products to make food products and Europe dose not; thereby, the flavor is more rich and sweet.
"We have American stores in England, but the products don’t have all the dies and stuff," she explained, "When I send

Master Gardeners are more than just enthusiasts; they are volunteer educators committed to promoting sustainable gardening practices. Their training in science-based methods allows them to provide accurate and helpful information to the public.
Their extensive work includes education and outreach by answering a diverse array of gardening questions, from pest and disease management to soil health. They can be found at farmers' markets, community events and other venues, leading presentations and work-

shops for community groups, schools and garden clubs. They also develop and distribute educational materials and manage demonstration gardens.
"Being successful at gardening in Curry County is made easier with the many resources available from your Master Gardener Program," said Julia Bott, master gardener and treasurer for Curry County Master Gardener. "Whether you access information

Beyond the edibles, Sweetly British also offers unique gifts, including British-themed humorous cards and puzzles. Roberts also supports local artisans by selling their homemade crafts. She even donates her fun gag gifts to local groups, like Shrimp Smacks Cereal, which is a box that can be filled with the many treats from her shop.
“Everybody loves my cards,” said Roberts.

Roberts has lived in the United States for thirty-four years and in Brookings for eleven, originally hailing from Felixstowe, Suffolk, UK.
Her shop, Sweetly British, is more than just a store; it's a little piece of her heritage shared with the community, offering a taste of British culture and a friendly chat.

Animal Welfare Crisis Unfolds at West Coast Game Park Safari, Leading to Seizures and Euthanasia
BY LINDA LEE Curry Coastal Pilot
A major animal welfare investigation at the West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon has resulted in the seizure of over three-hundred animals, the park's closure and the tragic euthanasia of three animals due to severe health conditions.
Authorities have been on site for days, conducting a forensic assessment and relocating animals to reputable facilities for specialized care.
The operation, a culmination of extensive interagency planning, saw veterinarians and staff from the Oregon Humane Society, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon Department of Agriculture meticulously evaluate the welfare of every animal.
The comprehensive assessment included examining physical condition, food and water quality, sanitation and enclosure conditions to ensure adequate care. Teams also supplied fresh, species-specific feed to the animals, with the Oregon Humane
Society purchasing food and staff from all agencies assisting in feeding efforts.
"Animal care has been a primary consideration during the investigation," officials stated.
The initial assessments on Thursday, May 15th, revealed a grim reality for some residents of the 21acre park, which opened in 1968 and housed approximately four-hundred fifty animals, including snow leopards, African lions, Bengal tigers and cougars.
One camel was diagnosed with multiple serious medical conditions and was suffering to such an extent that veterinary staff determined humane euthanasia was the only appropriate option. Treatment or transportation would have likely resulted in the animal's death.
As the investigation continued through the weekend, concluding on Sunday, May 18th, Oregon State Police confirmed that a total of three-hundred ten animals were seized and relocated to sanctuary and rescue facilities. None of the seized animals were released into the wild. In addition to the camel,

a chicken and a kinkajou were also euthanized due to their poor physical condition.
A Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon, has stepped in to temporarily house some of the seized animals.
"We are temporarily housing some of the animals here and they will

be going on," said Dan Brands, General Curator at Wildlife Safari. "We've already had some animals that have left to long term holding and there will be more leaving here shortly." Brands emphasized Wildlife Safari's extensive experience in animal care, including health assessments and providing

species-specific diets.
The delicate and complex nature of the investigation and search warrant operation required significant cooperation between the involved agencies, veterinary professionals and numerous accredited and permitted facilities that specialize in caring for these diverse animals.
