“As long as you know you can adapt, you can design the wheel.”

Over the past 30 years, I’ve developed a relationship with many clients and planted seeds of what insurance can do for them. I think of myself as a humble servant to our clients. Understanding their wants and needs, I present good solutions to help them make good buying decisions. COUNTRY takes our clients on a path and partners with them in life.

When it comes to business goals, I put a plan together and execute them. I’m a competitor by nature and have a desire to succeed. When you have the skillset and mindset to focus on your plan, you will be able to meet the numbers quickly. What we do at COUNTRY is a tremendous responsibility to our clients. We are professionals and represent them in ways doctors, accountants, lawyers, and others can’t do. We are their financial representatives and COUNTRY has awesome solutions.

It takes a team. At my agency, we have a team with a winning attitude, strong character, and individuals who see value in each other. I’ve been fortunate to work with great people, as we stick to a plan and constantly communicate. Within our system we are always adapting, showing up every day, and staying consistent.

We all have our stories and personal journeys. Despite that, the partnership COUNTRY creates with clients has continued to work, helping me to serve clients and build my business.

I want to give glory to God and thank my team, family, and COUNTRY in helping me get where I am today.

Advice to representatives

• Try not to reinvent the wheel. No matter what may be thrown at you, continue to be yourself and design your wheel. It’s still going to be round.

• Get familiar with the four behavior styles. The people who are doers, controllers, talkers, processors.

• When selling, you must adapt to the buyer.

5

Advice to representatives

• Stay humble, balanced; level your highs and lows, surround yourself with positive people.

• If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Nothing worth having comes easy!

A handshake, a smile, a commitment to do the things you say you will do; those are the things that guided my career.

COUNTRY is my second career. I started out as a truck driver for US Food Service. I would go up to Chicago to make deliveries out of the back of my truck. Actually, I was recruited by James Swartz from COUNTRY out of the back of that truck 20 years ago. I learned early the value of creating good relationships, as a lot of my accounts became some of my first clients.

As a driver, I would work long days just to get up and do it all over again. I wasn’t afraid of the work or the hours, I was more afraid of not being there for my family. When I was recruited, my wife Jamie and I had our 1-year-old son, Trevor. We just built our home outside Manville, Ill., where we plan to retire. I took a hefty pay cut to come to COUNTRY as a scratch rep, and I knew if I was going to make it, it was up to me. I worked a lot of late nights and weekends building a business, but never missed a family event. This job, this career, has allowed for me to do the extras: being with my family of Jamie, Trevor, and Ella; allowing me to coach my kids’ sports teams; coaching other teams. The days have been long, the years short. Still learning how to balance my personal and professional life, I feel blessed.

Creating my team is a huge part of success. I figured out early that I couldn’t do everything, and I needed someone that could help me with my weaknesses. Hiring my now office manager, Sarah Turner, was critical 18 years ago. As a team, my staff and I created the following power statement, “Clients do business with us because of how we do business, build relationships, communicate, understand and service clients’ needs.”

I have learned, do what is right, and you will sleep at night.

“Instead of all the reasons you can’t, find a reason why you can.”

“It’s not about what we want to sell. It’s about what the client wants and how they see their future.”

When I started at COUNTRY as a Rep 39 years ago, I worked hard to understand the clients and listen to them. During my 35 years as an Agency Manager, I’ve focused on doing the same with reps.

Getting to know what motivates them allows me to help them develop a path to accomplish their goals. My favorite part of my job is working with reps and seeing a “light bulb” moment when they figure out a new idea that’s going to help them for the rest of their career. It’s rewarding to watch them grow, succeed and attain a good standard of living.

It’s easy to feel good about the work we do because we help families. We ensure our clients aren’t financially shattered if they need to pay a claim because we pay it for them. If a loved one unexpectedly passes away, our life insurance may help send their kids to college.

I’m fortunate to work at an agency that has a wonderful agency office assistant, Connie Schultz, and many great reps. I’ve worked with many of them for a long time and developed some great relationships. We’re also lucky to work with a great bunch of people from the Home Offices. We all want the same thing – to take care of the client.

While I’m proud of my COUNTRY career and joining the Hall of Fame, when it comes down to it, I get the most joy out of working with others and supporting my family, which includes my wonderful wife, Brenda, our four children, and seven grandchildren. They are the center of my universe and have always supported my work.

I’m a curious person who always loved to ask questions, listen and learn about people. Whether it’s working with a client or a rep, it’s all about asking questions, listening and figuring out how to help them get where they want to go.

8

Advice to representatives

• Take time to get to know the clients before you try to sell anything. Find out where they are now and where they want to be. Then explain how our products can help them get there.

• Be yourself.

• Identify one to three items to do every day to get good results. We focus on conducting Client Annual Reviews, quoting and referrals.

9

Advice to representatives

• Keep it simple and maintain a servant mindset. Meet with as many people as you can and ask the right questions to understand their situation. Don’t just listen, but truly hear what they are saying.

• Surround yourself with strong mentors, inside and outside the organization. Look for people you can model your efforts after.

• Don’t reinvent systems, reinvent yourself. You’ll be amazed at how fast you progress.

Brian Lacey

We work in one of the most noble professions on this great Earth. If you do it right, it isn’t easy. But nothing worth doing ever is. We’re blessed with a true career, not just a job. The day we treat what we do as a job, we should probably look for something else to do. Our clients value those who can make a positive impact on them.

We help people make their financial house as efficient and secure as possible. We show them where they may be self-insuring, or exposed to risks they aren’t aware of. We bring value to the relationship by suggesting solutions that fit their situation at any given point in their lives.

My goal has always been to find out what people are worried about. If you help them quiet these fears, you won't have to worry about making All Americans. Success will find you.

This is how we set ourselves apart from policy peddlers. People are starving for relationships with professionals who care about them. When you treat clients with respect, they’ll happily tell their family and friends about you. I’ve found the secret to a long career is having a genuine concern for what you do and how you are perceived in your community.

I’ve been blessed to work with a great organization and amazing individuals. To be recognized by joining my brothers and sisters in the Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of my journey.

"The secret to a long career is having a genuine concern for what you do and how you are perceived in your community."

When I was hired at COUNTRY, I knew I had to do whatever it took to succeed. Failing was not an option. I didn’t dip my toes into this industry, I jumped in headfirst. Throughout my 15-year career at COUNTRY, hitting professional goals and building a great team have been my priority, but what really motivates me is taking care of families.

My team recently paid several death claims to young families who were unfortunately under-insured. In a world where everything just costs more, and life insurance coverage is static, we must educate and inform our clients. I decided to go back to every client and explain how hyper-inflation has eroded their benefits. It’s important to review their coverage, as $250,000 seemed like a lot of money five years ago, but now is almost nothing. That work added nearly $50 Million in death benefit coverage to my community last year.

Advice to reps

• You’re capable of MUCH more than you think you are, and you can be constrained if you only compare yourself to your peers. Continue to push yourself and challenge yourself to do more than you ever thought was possible.

“Know that you can't control everything, but you CAN control your enthusiasm, your attitude and your effort.”

As a business owner I’ve seen three things that slow every agent down: 1) The things we don’t like to do, 2) the things we don’t want to do and 3) the things we suck at doing. For me to be successful, I must hire great people to do all those things, otherwise they don’t get done. I have so much pride in our team. They all go the extra mile to give our clients an extraordinary experience.

Along with helping families be prepared, I cherish the opportunity to invest in the building up and character development of our youth, whether as a varsity soccer coach or teaching a high school finance class.

• Follow the 100% Rule: Offer 100% of our products to 100% of our prospects 100% of the time

It’s a point of pride for me to work for an organization that helps our clients protect the things they love most, while helping them plan for the future. I love working for a multiline company that aligns its values with mine.

I started working as a producer for COUNTRY Financial at the age of 20 for an Agent, Merle Janssen in Blue Springs, Missouri. By 21, I launched my own agency as a scratch rep for COUNTRY. Honestly, becoming a National Champion was always a dream of mine. My formula for success evolved through the years. Early on, building my networks was key, but shifting to growing my team radically changed my path to success. We are up to nine incredible team members who are all invested in our success. Each team member has a specialized role to really focus on our client experience, allowing us to grow much further than what I can do by myself. None of our success would have been achievable without my wife, Audra. She is the rock

Advice to reps

• Team specialization is critical when you're scaling your business.

• Rely on systems that are repeatable and scalable to grow your business.

“The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

that holds everything together. She is so understanding and supportive in helping me build our business.

I’m proud of our team’s work, but know it comes with long hours, late evenings and some sacrifices. It also allows us flexibility when it counts. I can be there as a dad, husband, coach and member of my community. Our team supports efforts near and dear to our hearts, like the Special Olympics, our local schools and veterans’ organization here in Kansas City.

My favorite memory so far is taking my first All American trip to Paris. While it wasn’t my first All American, it was the first time I could travel, and it coincided with my 10th wedding anniversary. Taking my wife to Paris for our anniversary was a dream come true.

• Invest in your business. Bet on yourself.

• Don't be afraid to take a calculated risk.

National Champion

Agency Manager

I’ve been very fortunate in my career, both as a Rep and Agency Manager. When I was named National Champion as a Rep, my success hinged on being there for our clients. I’d get the most incredible feeling leaving an appointment, knowing I’d made a real difference in someone’s life.

Being named National Champion as an Agency Manager has very similar rewards. I spend my time helping a great group of reps be successful in their own right. When they make a positive impact on the clients they serve, I get the same incredible feeling by watching them succeed.

Any Agency Manager who becomes a National Champion will tell you it’s entirely a team effort. I’m blessed with talented reps who care more about helping clients than they do about selling products, which ironically leads to better sales results.

Advice to reps

• Everything is possible when you have a positive attitude. Even when you’re frustrated, you have to let the negativity go and focus on helping the next person.

• Stay on an even keel. Don’t get too high when you succeed and don’t get too low when you fail. If you stay focused on helping clients, good things will happen.

“I’m blessed with talented reps who care more about helping clients than they do about selling products.”

In any career, when people realize you’re there for them, and not for you, they’re more likely to trust you. My job is to build trust and camaraderie with our reps, so they can do their best work and know I’m there to support them.

As a rep or a manager, the more you help others succeed, the more you’ll succeed. We often out-earn doctors and lawyers, without going to school for years and incurring huge student debts. Our families enjoy strong compensation, comfortable lifestyles and great job flexibility. That’s a unique combination of rewards.

I’m incredibly honored by this National Champion status on behalf of our agency and the reps who made this award possible.

• Focus on helping one client at a time. Every person you meet is a new opportunity to build a long-term relationship that benefits you both.
