Jeff Ludwick Representative | Mid Illini | District 8
“I love what I do, especially all the chances I get to help people, so this job has never felt like work to me.” Watch Jeff's Hall of Fame video
It’s weird how things sometimes work out in life, just because you’re in the right place at the right time. Before I came to COUNTRY Financial, I worked for a manufacturing company that didn’t seem to care much about their employees. After 15 years, I was so frustrated I went to a job service. That meeting changed my life. The job service employee listened to my story, and then she passed me a note and said, “call this number.” It turns out her husband was Denny Davis, a former COUNTRY Agency Manager in Decatur, Illinois, now retired. Denny knew I had also started a DJ service and built it into the biggest one in the county. Over 23 years, I worked about a thousand wedding receptions. That meant I had experience working with people, talking to groups and also had a large natural market of married people who were starting families. As it turns out, Denny was only my manager for about a month. If I met with anyone else at the job service, or if I had waited a few weeks before going there, I never would have found this amazing opportunity.
Advice to Representatives •
it’s uncomfortable. That’s how you demonstrate integrity. People want to do business with people they trust. •
For the last 18 years, I’ve shared an office with Jim Anderson. He and I bounce ideas off of each other on a regular basis. It’s great to have someone to collaborate with. More recently, I’m excited to work with my son, Zach Ludwick, who earned his first All American this year. The two of us and Zac Young are team-selling together in our agency. Our plan is for them to focus mainly on home, auto and life business, while I handle larger life cases and financial business. It’s an exciting new chapter for all of us.
Build relationships with local mortgage brokers. They’ve been an incredible source of quality business.

Get involved in your community and ask for referrals. I’ve served on several boards, including president of Decatur Celebration,
It was so refreshing to come to an organization where there’s no ceiling. If you work hard, you’ll earn exactly what you’re worth. I couldn’t ask for more than that. I’m so fortunate Mike Kernaghan has been my Agency Manager for 20 years. He taught me a lot about home and auto business, which greatly helped me. And I learned so much about the financial side of our business from Rep Jerry Schulz (Metro West Agency, Minn.)

Advice to Agency Managers • Be genuine, truthful and lead by example. Reps may not always like what you have to say, but they should be able to count on you to always be upfront and honest. • Always focus on life insurance, starting when you interview a potential new hire rep, and continuing through every meeting with clients. Reps need to understand the direction of the agency from day one. • Be adaptable to change. COVID-19 may have forced us to become even more flexible and find new ways to interact with clients, but we will always be continually adapting to a changing market.
There’s no foolproof formula to success, but as agency managers, we can stack the deck in our favor by putting the right people in the right positions to succeed. If you’re passionate about helping people, this career is for you. Every day is completely different, with new challenges and opportunities. I was a rep for seven years, and then an agency manager for 16 years. Being successful as a rep requires a different mentality than being a successful manager. In our business, reps primarily control their individual destiny, while agency managers are largely dependent on their reps. When I became an agency manager, I had to adjust and learn to depend on others for my success. I was also careful to remember the simple things I wanted from my manager. I wanted to be treated fairly, feel supported when I needed help and agree on clear, understandable objectives. Agency managers and reps can, and should, work together to build their agency’s culture and identity. I give my reps all the credit for me entering the Hall of Fame. I couldn’t have done it without their commitment to clients.
“My job is to inspire others to do their best. My reps are accountable to me, and I’m accountable to them.” Watch Kevin's Hall of Fame video
An agency manager’s success is always the sum of many people. For me, that starts with my wife, who bought into my dreams from day one. She does everything she can to reduce distractions and help me be successful. Obviously, my team of reps gives me a tremendous amount of support, even becoming a National Champion Agency in 2018. The reality of entering the Hall of Fame hasn’t really sunk in yet, probably because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The shutdowns and disruptions slowed us down for the first three quarters of the year, but we adjusted and came roaring back. We wrote almost half of our total life production in just the last three months. I am humbled and honored to join such an elite group of reps and managers in the COUNTRY Financial Hall of Fame. “Clients see me more as a friend who can help them than as a salesperson looking to make money.” Watch Mark's Hall of Fame video
When I started my COUNTRY career right out of college, I thought I might do this job for a few years. I remember thinking, “There’s no way I’ll ever get to the Hall of Fame.” Then, when you make your first All American, you think, “How am I ever going to make 19 more of these?” As time went on and I got more serious about my career, I realized, maybe I could do it, too. Here we are more than 30 years later, and I’ve really enjoyed the people I’ve worked with, and helped, along the way. When I look back at my first few years as a rep, I definitely struggled. I was young and single, and not very focused. Fortunately, Butch Burlend (now retired) became my agency manager, and he helped turn me around. When he was a rep, his wife worked as his assistant. They had such good results, we decided to follow in their footsteps. Since day one as my office assistant, my wife Stephanie has been one of the biggest reasons for my success. Clients love her and she helps write a lot of our business.
Advice to Representatives • Build a system that works for you. Everyone works differently and has different markets. Try ideas that work for other reps but be willing to adapt ideas to your business. • Decide what you want to achieve and write down your goals. Make them real. • Keep a positive attitude. If you’re negative, clients will notice.
Years ago, there was an unfair perception that insurance reps were like high-pressure, used car dealers. As a result, I was initially reluctant to talk to friends about insurance. I didn’t want them to think I was just trying to sell them something. Today, reps are seen much more favorably, especially those with COUNTRY Financial. We treat people the right way, and we’re respected in our communities. People want to do business with us because they know we care about them. I’m in the Hall of Fame simply because I learned to be successful over a long period. There’s nothing fancy about it, just lots of time talking to my clients. This has been a very rewarding career, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Left to right: Stephanie Stutsman, Production Assistant, Mark Stutsman and Erika Carrell, Production Assistant

Joe Youngman, CFP Agency Manager | Peoria-Knox | District 6
Advice to Representatives • Be proud of what you do. We can change someone’s life with the stroke of a pen. • Continuing education is extremely important. Earning my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation and moderating Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) classes helped me keep my skills sharp. • Everything starts with activity. If it’s Wednesday and you don’t already have 8-10 client appointments set for next week, stop what you’re doing and pick up the phone. There are people who need your help!
I was very fortunate to be hired and mentored by (retired Hall of Fame member) Mike Weber. As a longtime Agency Manager of the Peoria Agency, Mike taught me the fundamentals of the business and what it took to be successful. He was a great model of a servant leader as he took the time to meet with each of his reps every single week, and I have tried to do the same thing as an agency manager. The key to building a winning team is to surround yourself with motivated, like minded, people who are more talented than you are. My job is to show my reps where we are going as an agency and to be very clear as to what a good job looks like and what we need from them. Whether it is accountability, case prep, joint sales work, study groups, assistance in processing new business, or simply being a sounding board, I’m there for them any time of the day or night. The most satisfying part of my job is seeing my representatives succeed in reaching their goals. There are no shortcuts to success. Zig Ziglar said, “There’s always a line waiting for the elevator, but there is never a line at the stairs.” By taking the stairs to the top you will learn and see so much more. I’ve learned to love and embrace the journey more as I’ve grown older and more experienced.
“During periods of uncertainty, people flock to safety and security, which is exactly what we offer.” Watch Joe's Hall of Fame video
The pandemic certainly created new challenges for all of us, but more than anything, it created uncertainty. During these periods, people flock to safety and security, which is exactly what we offer. We were built for times like these! Becoming a member of the Hall of Fame has always been a long-term goal of mine. I am humbled and honored to be joining such a special group of people. I am blessed to have a very supportive family. They are my motivation and purpose in life. Without their love and support, reaching the Hall of Fame would not have been possible. I truly believe they all expected me to get to the Hall of Fame someday. Most of all, I hope that I have made them proud. One of my biggest strengths is perseverance. In spite of a chaotic year, and limited opportunities to meet clients in person, I never let go of those critical relationships.

That mindset paid off when I wrote two of the largest life policies in COUNTRY Financial history. It started simply enough, by striking up a conversation in our parking lot with a stranger in 2018. After he became a client, we talked about life insurance at the end of every meeting.

In December 2020, the client and his business partner purchased life policies, each with $20 million death benefits. I may have completed the sale in 2020, but it was the culmination of three years of working with the client. I didn’t let fear or lack of confidence keep me from talking about life insurance and asking how I could help. I can’t thank my former Agency Manager Brian Guenther (now Market 5 Area Director) enough for his assistance and patience along the way. It’s especially satisfying for both of us to earn National Champion in the same year.
Gay-Heath. She was wonderfully excited for me, and her happiness made it all sink in. I should have hired an assistant as soon as I started. Instead, I tried to go it alone, which piled everything up on my shoulders. When I finally hired Taylor Houseworth as my Administrative Assistant, my business started to truly take off. It’s important to provide Taylor with a good career and the chance for her voice to be heard. I told her, “You don’t work under me or for me – this is your business, too.” We’re building our business together, including making growth decisions and implementing new ideas. My success resonates far beyond me. It directly helps my agency and our organization, and also has a positive impact on other female reps. Many have expressed their excitement and grown the confidence to reach higher. That’s a great legacy because we all lift each other up when we’re successful.

• Try to connect with clients on a personal level. I love putting smiles on peoples’ faces. If they’re stressed or in a bad mood, I let them know I’m there to listen and help any way I can.
• Be open to new ways to interact with clients, however they prefer. We’ll emerge from this pandemic with more ways to reach clients than ever before. • Virtually all of my business comes from referrals. Your local centers of influence (COI) are a great source.

“Once you lead a National Champion agency, it’s your responsibility to share what you’ve learned with others.”
National Champion Agency Manager
Brian Guenther
All American
Kansas City Metro West | District 4
Before becoming an Agency Manager, I was a Rep for 15 years. So, the daily challenges they face are very real to me. When I started as a rep, I did really well my first year or so. Then I allowed myself to get distracted. I considered quitting several times. I blamed everyone and everything for my struggles, except myself.
In just one year, we took our commercial production from almost nothing to being the first agency outside Illinois to earn $1 million in commercial premium. Even the pandemic didn’t slow us down. We broke 95-yearold production records. The confidence you get from that kind of year is incredible.
I want reps to know I’ve walked the same road they’re walking today. I learned how to overcome obstacles, and I can help them do it, too.
In my new role as the Market 5 Area Director, I want to help our managers and reps continue to build on the success we have here in Market 5
I take hiring very seriously, and I never hire reps just to fill a seat. COUNTRY invests money and resources in every new rep, so it’s important we bring the right people on board.
I’m especially proud that one of the KC Metro West Agency reps, Laura Foster, also became a National Champion last year. She’s a great example of how we do things the right way. It’s nice to see a spotlight shine on the whole agency.
We intentionally set high standards, and I never ask reps to do something without having a plan to back them up. I told the KC Metro West Agency, “listen, I really think we could be National Champions. Is that something you want to do as a team.” To their credit, everyone gave their very best effort.
Success is a team sport. I surround myself with people who are smarter than I am. All COUNTRY agencies are part of the same team, and we want each other to succeed. We just want to succeed a little bit more than everyone else.
Advice to Reps • Encourage reps to learn from mentors. Set up a structured mentoring program in your agency, if needed. • There are no throwaway days. It may seem insignificant to coast for a day early in the year, but you’ll wish you had that day of production back when it’s crunch time at the end of the year.
22
• Be flexible and adaptable. Because of the pandemic, our agency barely saw each other in person in 2020. I only got to meet some of my reps face-to-face once or twice, and we managed to become National Champions.

Pitch the Sharks
Virtual brewery tour and tasting Agency Manager Clay Flower (Spokane, Wash.) invited centers of influence (COIs) to attend a virtual local brewery tasting via Zoom. His reps delivered products to be sampled in the days leading up to the event. Local breweries highlighted their business and gave behind the scenes tours of their facilities with everyone safely participating.
During the summer of 2020, more than 70 agency managers submitted and implemented unique and innovative ideas on how to reach prospects and identify potential clients during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Pitch the Sharks contest. In September, five finalists were chosen and they headed to Las Vegas in October to pitch Tim Harris, Kendall Holmes, and Jeff Koerner their idea. After presenting to the sharks, a winner was determined.
COUNTRY growth mobile app
Watch highlights from the Pitch the Sharks event.
Agency Manager Shahna Magee (formerly Midwestern Illinois, currently McLean-Livingston) proposed a mobile app that reps could use to set appointments and activity goals that would assist them in hitting production goals (like qualifying for All American).
Congratulations to former Agency Manager Karry Williams
COVID-19 curve buster referral campaign
(Vancouver, Wash.), now Area Director Market 1 on his Operation Dragonfly: Improvise-Adapt-Overcome idea, that won the contest
Agency Manager Jeff Maxson (Chicago South) utilized his agencies social media presence to drive referral and quote activity with a Peloton exercise bike giveaway.
and earned him and his agency dinner with the sharks. Check out their idea, along with highlights of the other top four qualifiers.
Operation Dragonfly: Improvise-Adapt-Overcome
Flick and friends and COUNTRY clean
The state of Washington was one of the first states hit hard by the pandemic. Karry and his reps looked for a way to keep appointment activity high without creating a large burden for reps.
Agency Manager Jeremy Peterson (Northern Nevada) shared how to stay top-of-mind and show appreciation to COIs through unique experiences: • Flick and Friends: His agency rented out screens at a local drive-in theater and invited COIs to attend with their families. They provided gift baskets with snacks and COUNTRY branded merchandise. • COUNTRY Clean: They offered free car washes through a mobile car wash service to COIs.
When the Marketing Call Center (MCC) shut down in early March, text message offered a safe, effective way to reach clients. Once texts deployed, they received responses from clients, many of whom had not responded to prior contact attempts by phone or mail. After some positive results, they conducted a pilot with Rep Janet Richardson to focus on a productspecific review of their Term Life policy, versus an Insurance & Financial Review (IFR). Janet, her assistant, Rose Emerson, and Karry worked to develop, test, and track initial and follow-up scripts to optimize appointments and efficiency. After testing a few different scripts, their results exploded! They had a 30-40% response rate within minutes to a few hours from clients ready to schedule their review. They tested follow-up scripts until they had a couple that worked great for those who didn’t initially respond. To date, the follow up texts have another 20-30% response rate for appointments. Combined, they’re seeing a 50-60% text to appointment success rate compared to a call to appointment book rate of 12% by the MCC.

The following reps also participated in the Pitch the Sharks event:
• Ed Beavers (Chicago South) • Ryan Johnson (Midwestern Illinois) • John Kapelac (Spokane) • Sean Marler (Northern Nevada) • Janet Richardson (Vancouver)
