2022 Hall of Fame Inductee Brad Meinhart
Representative | South Central Illinois Agency | Market 5
Growing up as a kid on a farm near Effingham, Illinois, I wasn’t impressed with most insurance salespeople. It seemed like they would just show up unannounced and wouldn’t leave until my dad wrote them a check for some sort of policy they wanted to sell.
When I started as a rep in 1990, I learned that wasn’t how COUNTRY treated people. We focus on building relationships and asking the right questions to understand clients’ goals and the risks they face. Then, we talk about solutions to help them reach those goals and mitigate those risks. It’s always about the clients, and what they need to feel financially secure and protected.
Unfortunately, as a younger rep, I was too much like the baseball pitcher in the movie Bull Durham, who had a million-dollar arm, but a 10-cent brain. When I struggled during my first 10 years with COUNTRY, it was because my 10-cent brain made me stubborn.
I thought my way was the best way, even when I wasn’t getting the results I needed. I learned sticking to a mediocre process, no matter how much you may like it, is the surest way to be unproductive.
We can all get stuck in our ways from time to time. But if what you’re doing doesn’t hit the scoreboard and get the right results, then it isn’t the best way. It’s time to swallow your pride, listen to other viewpoints and try new things.
When you think you have it all figured out, that’s a great time to remember to be a good student. Watch and listen to other successful reps. See what they’re doing. Adopt ideas that will work for you and the way you relate to clients. When you spend your time helping clients improve their lives, you’ll go home every night feeling like you made a real difference in your community.
“When you think you have it all figured out, that’s a great time to remember to be a good student.”

Advice to Representatives
• Know what you’re good at, and where you can deliver the most value for clients and spend your time doing that. Delegate all other tasks.
• Surround yourself with a quality team who can take some busy work off your plate so you can work directly with clients to find the right solutions that help them achieve their goals.
• Don’t be satisfied with being busy. Anyone can fill their day with work they shouldn’t be doing. It’s more important to make sure the work you’re doing is productive. It’s not the number of hours you work, it’s what you do with them that matters.
5
Advice to Representatives
• Build a team of good people as early as possible.
• Stay away from negativity and focus on achieving your personal goals.
• Find a mentor. Partnering is the best way to learn quickly. Earning partial commissions on a sale is better than having no sale at all.
• If you’re starting your career, meet routinely with other newer reps and hold each other accountable for achieving your shared goals.

2022 Hall of Fame Inductee
Paula Simmons
Representative | Madison-Bond-Jersey-Calhoun Agency (Ill.) | Market 5
My journey with COUNTRY started in 2002. From the very first interview, it was obvious I had found a new home. I quickly learned COUNTRY puts a high value on relationships.
My first Agency Manager, Randy Riekena, gave me more support than I deserved, always going the extra mile. He was an invaluable mentor to me, accompanying me on countless appointments so I could learn the right way to talk to prospects and clients and be a good listener.
Since I knew I never wanted to go back to being a high school math teacher, I made up my mind that I was going to succeed in this new career. I also went a step further and decided to make 20 All Americans in 20 years. That big goal motivated me to work longer and harder than I would have otherwise.
Helping clients find policies, coverages and investments that fit their goals is fulfilling to me. Some clients weren’t aware they had a critical gap that needed to be filled, because nobody had ever taken the time to help them.
During the last several years, we all faced many new challenges, especially with the pandemic. This forced us to be creative and learn new ways to work with clients. Fortunately, our career gives us the flexibility to create a balance between our work schedules and spending time with family.
To be successful, I relied on a determined mindset, invaluable mentoring, dedication to hard work, faith in God as my helper in all things, and strong personal and family support.

“The best part of my job is when a client decides to put their trust in me to help them find the right solutions for their needs.”

The main thing that’s kept me at COUNTRY for 23 years is getting to work with great clients, reps, leaders and Home Offices staff. I focus on helping my clients achieve their goals, which gives me a high level of satisfaction. I love what I do.
I like to learn and expand my knowledge with information that’ll help me grow professionally and personally. Surrounding myself with motivated people over the years has led to meaningful results.
One experience that has impacted me the most during my career involved a young client who passed away after a freak accident at home. I met with his wife that same day, cried with her, shared stories about her husband, and assured her not to worry about the financials. Within seven days, COUNTRY processed his life insurance claim and overnighted the check for me to present to her.
Advice to Reps
• Always look out for the best interest of your clients and stand by your commitments.
• Don’t be afraid to partner with other subject matter experts like a financial advisor.
Although she was a widow in her late 30s, that gave her some relief knowing her financial needs would be taken care of. People really appreciated what we do.
I’m able to make a difference in the lives of my clients in many ways, especially by standing by them when they need me. It’s important that as reps, we advocate for our clients, regardless of the results. Educating them on topics that help them understand their needs is also key.
Being named a National Champion is very humbling and appreciated. It reinforces that our business formula works and that I’m successfully taking care of my clients, the organization and my family.
• Be open to learning different approaches and build on emotional intelligence, so you can connect well with others and anticipate their needs.

National Champion
Agency Manager
Joe Youngman
Our agency enjoys a high-performance, no-excuse culture. We expect to be at or near the top of the organization across all product lines each and every year. We take pride in knowing that we’re a part of the best agency with a long, rich history and tradition of success.
Our reps know that if they help their clients reach their financial security goals, they in turn will reach their goals. As an agency manager, helping my reps achieve their goals ensures I’m able to reach mine.
We are very passionate about making a difference in our clients’ lives and the communities we serve. We accomplish this by educating our clients, recommending appropriate amounts of coverages, and putting together sound financial plans. Putting our products and services into a household always puts them in a better position than before.
Advice to Reps
• Know your “why” – why are you in this career and what are your goals? Whether it’s a vacation home or a comfortable retirement, figure out what you need to do to achieve them.
• Take an interest in the personal lives of your clients. If you’re in leadership, make it a priority to connect
I love collaborating with my reps to help them grow their businesses. Whether it be analyzing cases, conducting joint sales appointments, leading study groups, or business and goal planning. It is very gratifying seeing them achieve success!
Being the National Champion means a lot to me and the entire agency. It’s the ultimate team accomplishment in any given year. Successful people want to do business with successful people. Being the National Champion Agency will just confirm in our clients’ minds that they are doing business with the right people.
with your people. That means consistent face-to-face meetings and listening to them.
• Try to be better today than you were yesterday and have a grateful heart.
