Explore our guide to discover your ideal Cotswold Yoga destination. Easy Bean Summer Salad Recipe
Find out how to make this incredibly simple and filling summer salad.
A Letter From The Editor.
Welcome to this early summer edition of CotswoldXL magazine. Haven’t we had the most glorious spring? I’ve enjoyed watching the season bring a new floral delight each week across the Cotswolds’ fields, verges, and hills. The daisies, cow parsley, and buttercups are just a few of my botanical favourites in Mother Nature’s opening sequence to the warmer months. Undoubtedly, being surrounded by such beauty is beneficial for us. Everything feels a little bit easier, doesn’t it? It therefore makes perfect sense that the Cotswolds have become a hub for ‘Wellness’ endeavours in recent years. But what exactly is ‘Wellness’ other than the media’s latest buzz phrase, I hear you ask?
The internet is saturated with interpretations of the concept. However, to put it simply, wellness is the process of taking steps to care for one’s physical, mental, and social well-being. With this in mind, in this edition we’ve brought together some of the fantastic things on offer in the Cotswolds to help you do just that. It’s been a delightful issue to research, and quite frankly, it’s been a pleasantly eye-opening experience.
Turn to P6 for one of my all-time top activities, ‘A Visit to The Wild Sauna at Cherington’, and P24 for ‘Yoga in the Cotswolds’. Then on P68 meet dynamic Cotswold businesswoman, Nicky Skea,

founder of Sorelle Health. On P46 find out why beans and pulses are just right for your health kick, and on P77, my recipe for an Easy Bean Summer Salad. Plus, lots more.
As always if you have a story you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you.

The Wild Sauna
On a gloriously sunny morning in May, I made my way to The Wild Sauna at Whichford Mill in Cherington. The car bumped down a long drive of honey-hued Cotswold stone, emerging with the old mill on one side and the River Stour rushing past on the other. I stepped from the car and took it all in.
I live in the rural Cotswolds, and sometimes I think I’m accustomed to its beauty. However, it’s easy to forget that the Cotswolds has endless treasures tucked away here and there that can unfold unexpectedly before you like little pockets of joy. As I took in my surroundings, I realised I may have found myself in one such place.
I chatted with Lucy, the owner of The Wild Sauna, and she directed me through a carved wooden gate to begin my session in their wood-fired sauna. As an adult and writer, calling something magical can feel childish and one-dimensional. Yet, the magical setting before me felt anything but one-dimensional. It felt lush, untamed, and beautiful.
The sauna rests on the edge of a copse. Dappled light fell over the river, with an abundance of cow parsley, and a small, tantalising bridge over the River Stour that beckoned you to follow a path rich with nature’s promise. To the right of the bridge was a ladder leading down into the river – ideal for a cold plunge after your sauna. Or for those who prefer to see where their feet are stepping, a vintage enamel bath lay under a tree filled with icy water and petals. A few meters away, nestled amongst the clouds of cow parsley, I could see the chimney of a wood-burning hot tub.

The sauna is a converted horse box nestled within a delightful wooden structure that resembles a fairy-tale cottage. There are two changing rooms and a shower on either side. Three other women joined me, as this particular time slot was open to anyone in the community, and community places are available each week if booked in advance.

“That somewhere inside us all resides that playful, curious child who wants nothing more than to exist in the joy of the present moment and feel alive.”

The sauna was as hot and soothing as one might expect, and the company of three strangers made it even better. We relaxed, laughed, and put the world to rights. After a while, I headed out to the river, climbed the ladder, and braved the murky, cold water, encouraged by one of my new friends. It was brutally cold, but as I saw my first mayfly of the year sweep over my head, I felt happy and exhilarated.
The session lasted an hour, during which we hopped in and out of the sauna, cooling ourselves down when necessary. Halfway through, Lucy brought us some sweet orange wedges. When I felt a little dizzy, normal with a sauna, I drank water and enjoyed wandering about the green space and dipping in and out of the river.

As I dried off and reflected, I felt peaceful and euphoric. Quite frankly, as a middleaged woman, that’s not necessarily my usual vibe. I’ve never found saunas restorative before; however, this experience was vastly different.
The thing is, I realised that this wasn’t just relaxing escapism from my life. Instead, it was a reminder of who I am, without all the strain, busyness, and buzz of modern living. A sauna forces you to be still; a wild sauna reminds us that we are simple beings that thrive in nature, especially when we connect to our bodies. That somewhere inside us all resides that playful, curious child who wants nothing more than to exist in the joy of the present moment and feel alive.

A HISTORY OF
The Wild Sauna
For 20 years, Lucy and Tom lived on the Sussex coast, converting workboats into homes. When lockdown arrived and nothing was quite as it had been before, they felt inspired to transform a 1960s horsebox into a stunning wood-lined sauna. Meanwhile, they had also become hooked on wild swimming (they still are), and before long, the combination of cold sea swimming and a hot sauna gave birth to The Wild Sauna.
Lucy and Tom felt they still had a significant project inside of them, so they took a leap of faith and moved to the Cotswolds, where Tom’s family lived. Tom’s mother, Dominique, founder of Whichford Pottery, had long admired the beauty of Whichford Mill. Therefore, when it came on the market at precisely the right moment, it seemed it was meant to be. The meandering River Stour and abundant ancient springs made it an ideal place for The Wild Sauna.

Owner
Lucy
We sit in the sunshine, and Lucy explains to me that, despite not knowing anyone beyond family when they moved to the Cotswolds two years ago, they have discovered that the Wild Sauna brings together truly lovely people and that a community is growing around it. As a result, they are expanding their community sessions and will soon provide an additional eight spaces specifically for community bookings. They also offer free saunas to NHS staff each month as part of a nationwide campaign by the British Sauna Society, and a local GP is interested in social prescribing the Wild Sauna at their practice. It makes perfect sense; we know saunas have health benefits and that immersion in nature is excellent for mental health.
Additionally, since the sauna accommodates only six people, a woodfired hot tub filled with spring water has been constructed, allowing larger groups to hire the space for an hour or two. This is ideal for visitors to the area travelling with a larger group or for those seeking a special way to enjoy time with family and friends.
SAUNAS AND THEIR HEALTH BENEFITS
A sauna is typically a room heated to between 70° Celsius and 100° Celsius or 158° Fahrenheit and 212° Fahrenheit.
• Regardless of how a sauna is heated or the humidity level, the effects on the body are similar.
• When you sit in a sauna, your heart rate increases, and blood vessels widen. This increases circulation similarly to low- to moderateintensity exercise, depending on the duration of sauna use.
• The widening of your arteries can decrease high blood pressure.
• A sauna can increase circulation, reduce muscle soreness, improve joint movement, and ease arthritis pain.
• People with asthma may find relief from some symptoms as a result of using a sauna. It can open airways, loosen phlegm, and reduce stress.

Stretch Out Into A New Summer Space
Summer is approaching fast and with it comes a natural yearning to stretch out and feel the joy of space after months of hunkering down against the winter cold. If your thoughts are turning to the addition of more space at home, perhaps adding an extension for another bedroom, an office or a bigger kitchen, we can count ourselves lucky in the Cotswolds that we can call on some truly consummate professionals to handle every aspect of the work.

GIVE YOURSELF ‘HOME ADVANTAGE’
With everyone from civil engineers to artisan builders, plant hire companies, plumbers and electricians it can really pay to ‘shop local’ when planning a home alteration, improvement or even to undertake a new build from scratch, especially when examples of the outstanding work of Cotswolds tradespeople are plain to see throughout the area. It’s no exaggeration to say that when it comes to building in an area like the Cotswolds, so famed for its historic and picturesque town and villages, there are certain ‘sensitivities’ to be considered. Using local building and engineering expertise automatically gives you a ‘home advantage’, and putting together a trusted team with invaluable knowledge of Cotswold planning requirements and materials will prove a wise and potentially cost-effective strategy.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING

So, if you’re ready to let your imagination run wild and start planning a home enhancement or even a completely new property, we’ve provided you with a handy directory of some of the finest tradespeople that the Cotswolds has to offer. It is said, though, that ‘timing is everything’, so, while we may only just be moving into spring, now really is the time to start the ball rolling and get the planning and suppliers in the diary. Remember, if you want to use the best, experts are in high demand-book ‘em in now!

THE MAGIC OF BEANS AND PULSES
Why They’re Perfect for a Healthy Life
Beans and pulses - part of the legume family- are a small, often underrated, powerful superfood from Mother Nature’s larder. They have something of a reputation due to their impact on the gut, but the truth is that they can contribute significantly to a healthy diet.
Beans and pulses are incredibly nutritious; it’s no surprise they’re a dietary staple worldwide. They contain antioxidants and vital minerals like iron, folate, and magnesium. They’re also high in fibre and protein with a low glycaemic index, which means they cause a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels after consumption. Essentially, this means you will feel fuller for longer. But the magic doesn’t stop there; they are also great for your heart. They can reduce cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and decrease your risk of coronary heart disease - the leading cause of heart attacks. Additionally, the fibre that gives beans their questionable reputation actually indicates that they’re keeping our guts healthy by acting as a prebiotic.
The various fibre types in beans and pulses act as prebiotic precursors, which are ingested by beneficial microorganisms in the gut. This fermentation process

promotes gut health, boosts immunity, and helps minimise inflammation. This is important because inflammation is a significant factor in a range of acute and chronic illnesses. Additionally, science tells us that good gut health, which minimises inflammation in our bodies, also promotes a feeling of well-being in our minds.
There’s no denying that these tiny foodstuffs pack a pretty powerful health punch.
But the real magic of beans lies in their cost, cultivation and availability. They are inexpensive, relatively easy to produce, and incredibly versatile. Plus, they’re ecofriendly and sustainable.
As far as healthy improvements go, you can’t go far wrong with beans and pulses. If they haven’t been your thing in the past, introduce them gradually. Perhaps add a handful of lentils to your Bolognese, lasagne, or cottage pie. Or toss some chickpeas into a salad or casserole. There are endless options for cooking with beans and pulses, and an abundance of health benefits -what’s not to like?

The Redesdale Hall Restoration Project 2025

After months of restoration, the Redesdale Hall Clock Tower was returned to its rightful position high above the historic Moreton-inMarsh High Street in May.

The Redesdale Hall Trust commissioned a small army of craftspeople from across the Cotswolds and wider Midlands to restore the spectacular structure to its former glory. Tim Potts, master carpenter painstakingly re-built the tower lantern using seasoned oak. The four clock faces, and the weathervane were conserved, re-gilded and painted by Smiths of Derby. Each of the clock faces are flanked by huge carved oak surrounds featuring a sun, moon, mythical creatures and animals, all carefully copied from the originals that had started to rot away many years ago. Four carvers led by Simon Haywood undertook this mammoth task in a very few short weeks, and the results are stunning. These were all hoisted into place by crane watched by a growing group of townspeople and visitors.

The Trustees also saw an opportunity to replace the original bells, long since lost to history. A photograph taken of the tower three years after the building was built in 1887 showed a surprising three bells; a main hour bell and two smaller tin-tang bells that ring on the quarter hour. The Trust asked Simon Adams from the Taylor Bell Foundry in Loughborough to source suitable bells. He found, tuned and fitted them before the scaffolding was brought down, just in time for the bells to be rung out again for the first time since before the War, on VE day itself; a very special moment.
These works mark the completion of Phase 1 of the conservation Masterplan. Phase 2, which must be started by June next year before the netting that holds the falling roof tiles in place fails, will look to replace the leaking roof at a cost of nearly £1million, much of which must be raised by private donations and grants.
If you would like to help, please contact the Trust via theredesdalehall.org.uk

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS
With Nicola Skea
Founder of Sorelle Health Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

Cotswold naturopath and businesswoman
Nicky Skea studied Naturopathic nutrition at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. Naturopathic nutrition is a complementary therapy that views food as medicine, emphasising whole, organic, and chemical-free ingredients that promote our natural self-healing mechanisms.
Nicky specialised in autoimmune and digestive health, employing Ayurvedic principles alongside Western herbs and functional blood testing. This journey led her to create Sorelle Health.
Sorelle Health offers a carefully curated selection of supplements in various forms, designed as a comprehensive ‘toolkit’ to support the body during healing and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Q: When did you first become interested in Naturopathic Nutrition and why?
A: ‘I had two career choices as a teenager: Naturopathy was one, and Hairdressing was the second. Hairdressing won for 25 years, and although I loved it, I always felt a calling to become a Naturopath.’

Q: When did you start Sorelle?
A: ‘Two years ago, I struggled to find supplements that weren’t synthetic or mixed with unnecessary herbs and fillers. I wanted a very simple range of vitamins and minerals that had a positive, noticeable effect on the body, could be felt by the patient, and monitored through a blood test.’

Q: What or who inspires you daily?
A: ‘My family and nature.’
Q: Why did you start the retreats?
A: ‘There is so much confusion and conflicting advice on social media. I wanted to interact with more than one client at a time and help people understand their individual constitution and microbiome, which affects everything. Retreats and workshops enable us to connect to ourselves, each other, and nature.’

Q: What are your top supplements for wellness?
Q: What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
A: ‘Foraging and blending plants and talking about health and the microbiome.’
Q: What’s your least favourite thing about what you do?
A: ‘Trying to keep up with social media.’
Q: How do you manage stress in your life?
A: ‘Foraging, walking with my dogs, yin yoga, and non-toxic eating habits.’
Q: How do you relax?
A: ‘Cooking, reading or cuddling my dogs.’
Q: Do you have a mantra or saying that you try to live by?
A: ‘Nothing in life is personal. Practice gratitude every day.’
Q: What is your favourite book?
A: ‘Easy! Vitamin B complex, Magnesium plus, Omega 3 and Fermented fruits.’ TO LEARN ABOUT SORELLE AND THEIR OFFERINGS, VISIT
A: ‘So many great books! For work: ‘Dispensing with Tradition’ by the great herbalist Anne McIntyre and “Spark in the Machine’ by Daniel Known. For pleasure: ‘Of Men and Plants’ by Maurice Messengue’

Easy Bean Summer Salad RECIPE
I used to struggle with beans; I found their texture questionable and their taste bland. However, a health kick, a chat with a dietitian, and some cracking recipes changed my mind, and now beans are among my favourite go-to foods. They’re healthy, easy, and adaptable. Plus, they absorb flavours in a really satisfying way. If the dreaded bean bloat puts you off, soaking dried beans overnight or giving tinned beans a good rinse can help eliminate that. I love a cannellini bean or a lentil, but there is no bean I will turn my nose up at.
Enjoy the health benefits of beautiful beans with this incredibly simple and adaptable recipe for a filling summer salad.
Ingredients
• 1 tin of cannellini beans
• 1 tin of kidney beans
• ¼ of a red Onion, finely chopped
• Cooked Green Beans chopped
• 1 celery stalk chopped into small pieces
• A handful of fresh coriander chopped
• A handful of mint chopped
FOR THE TOPPING
• 3 Tbs red wine vinegar
• 4 Tbs extra virgin olive oil
• salt and pepper
• 1 Tsp of Dijon mustard
Method
STEP 1
Open your tins of beans and rinse them thoroughly under cold water. Then, depending on how much you want to use, empty them into a big salad bowl. If you have more than you need, you can place them in a storage box, cover them with water, and freeze them for later use.
STEP 2
Place the remaining ingredients in the bowl and mix the salad well. Then, add your dressing and mix well again. Cover and leave it in the fridge for an hour to let the beans absorb the dressing. The salad goes well with fish, barbecue food or on its own as a healthy lunch or snack. You can also mix in some tuna or chicken for extra protein.
