A History of the Flat Cap
Explore the history of the iconic British flat cap.
A Letter From The Editor.
It’s hard to believe that the Cheltenham Festival is just around the corner, and not a moment too soon I say. Come January something happens in the Cotswolds. On January 1st, the villages and towns are bustling with tourists and locals as they have been for the whole Christmas season. But when the shops throw open their doors on January 2nd,, they are more likely to be met by a blast of cold air than a crowd of people. Thus begins the post-Christmas quiet. No doubt, the same story is played out in tourist spots across the UK, and initially, it’s always something of a welcome relief after the Christmas craziness. But come late February, when the grey and dreariness feels like it’s lodged in my bones, I long for the hustle and bustle – and Cheltenham Festival is when it returns. The event brings the crowds and energy to our region like a wonderful signifier of better things to come and the impending end of winter. It brings a buzz to the area that even those non-fans of the sport can’t help but be caught up in. Long may it last. This means that I take particular pleasure in the Cheltenham Festival issue as I know that Spring isn’t too far away.
This year, the festival promises to be as exciting as ever, plus there is the possibility that history could be made in the Gold Cup on 14th March by Willie Mullins with Galopin Des Champs. To find out more, turn to P56 and read all about it in ‘Cheltenham Gold Cup 2025’. On P47 fill your boots with our recipe

for a ‘Bacon, Egg and Avocado Sandwich’, for the lowdown on the courses at Prestbury Park, turn to P18 for ‘Cheltenham Racecourse – The Old Course and The New Course Explained.’ On P28 it’s ‘The History of the Flat Cap’ you might see one or two if you’re heading to the races. And on P6 find out all about the Cheltenham Festival Highlights over the years in ‘Memorable Moments from Cheltenham Festival.’
If you’re heading off to the festival, remember to wrap up and wear sensible shoes plus have a really wonderful time.
As ever, if you’d like to be featured in the magazine then I’d love to hear from you.

Memorable Moments from the Cheltenham Festival
The iconic Cheltenham Festival is the home of National Hunt racing and the pinnacle annual event for the sport. The crowds are always well-dressed, exuberant, and brimming with nervous excitement. It’s an extraordinary four days, guaranteed to deliver a wealth of highs and lows. Relive the twists and turns as we look back at some of the most memorable festival moments from over the years.
ARKLE, CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP
1964- 1966
Arkle, affectionately known as ‘Himself,’ became a national hero and a legend in his own right during his lifetime. Foaled in 1957 at Ballymacoll Stud in County Meath, Ireland, he emerged as the greatest steeplechaser of all time. He left an indelible mark on the Cheltenham Festival with his three consecutive victories in the Cheltenham Gold Cup from 1964 to 1966, a hat trick since matched only by Best Mate.
Cheltenham racegoers will recognise Arkle’s commemorative statue at the course, which serves as a lasting tribute to the unforgettable legend.
MICHAEL DICKENSON, TRAINER –1983
Getting a horse to the Cheltenham Festival and fit enough to run in the Gold Cup is an underrated and difficult process. In 1983, Michael Dickenson had an incredible five horses in the race, and astonishingly, those five horses were the first home. It remains a unique event and undoubtedly one of the all-time great moments in the sports history.
BEST MATE, 2002-2004
Best Mate was an Irish-bred, English-trained racehorse who undoubtedly earned his place among the Cheltenham greats by winning three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Owned by the late Jim Lewis, trained by Henrietta Knight, and ridden by Jim Culloty, he was a beloved and popular horse, often receiving fan mail and requests for photographs. Sadly, he passed away in 2005 from a heart attack while racing at Exeter. His sudden death made front-page news.

Statue of Dawn Run at Cheltenham with Arkle’s Statue in the background
DAWN RUN, 1986
In 1986, Dawn Run went down in history as the first and only horse to win both the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Foaled in 1978, trained by the esteemed Paddy Mullins, and ridden by Jonjo O’Neill, Dawn Run’s astonishing feat remains one of the most remarkable achievements in racing history, a testament to her outstanding talent and tenacity.
QUEVEGA, 2009-2014
Quevega’s name is firmly etched in Cheltenham Festival history, with an unparalleled streak of six consecutive victories in the Mares Hurdle from 2009 – 2014. Foaled in 2004, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Ruby Walsh, her dominance in her respective category remains unmatched. Unsurprisingly, Quevega sits comfortably among Cheltenham Festival’s all-time greats.
WORDS BY MIDE CARTER
Stretch Out Into A New Summer Space
Summer is approaching fast and with it comes a natural yearning to stretch out and feel the joy of space after months of hunkering down against the winter cold. If your thoughts are turning to the addition of more space at home, perhaps adding an extension for another bedroom, an office or a bigger kitchen, we can count ourselves lucky in the Cotswolds that we can call on some truly consummate professionals to handle every aspect of the work.

GIVE YOURSELF ‘HOME ADVANTAGE’
With everyone from civil engineers to artisan builders, plant hire companies, plumbers and electricians it can really pay to ‘shop local’ when planning a home alteration, improvement or even to undertake a new build from scratch, especially when examples of the outstanding work of Cotswolds tradespeople are plain to see throughout the area. It’s no exaggeration to say that when it comes to building in an area like the Cotswolds, so famed for its historic and picturesque town and villages, there are certain ‘sensitivities’ to be considered. Using local building and engineering expertise automatically gives you a ‘home advantage’, and putting together a trusted team with invaluable knowledge of Cotswold planning requirements and materials will prove a wise and potentially cost-effective strategy.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING

So, if you’re ready to let your imagination run wild and start planning a home enhancement or even a completely new property, we’ve provided you with a handy directory of some of the finest tradespeople that the Cotswolds has to offer. It is said, though, that ‘timing is everything’, so, while we may only just be moving into spring, now really is the time to start the ball rolling and get the planning and suppliers in the diary. Remember, if you want to use the best, experts are in high demand-book ‘em in now!

The Old Course and The New Course
Explained and Why it Matters at Cheltenham Festival

Somewhat confusingly for newcomers to the sport, there are two courses at Cheltenham’s Prestbury Park Racecourse. Simply put, the two courses overlap and then diverge away from one another - the Old Course and the New Course. These two courses provide different racing challenges for the horses, which means a wider variation of races can be staged during the four days of the Cheltenham Festival. Both courses end at the finishing post in front of Cheltenham’s grandstands, and both courses loop anti-clockwise into
the countryside. But there is a split where the New Course extends further into the distance, therefore creating ideal conditions for longer races.
Each horse may perform differently on each course, depending on their particular running style. This means that when you know the form of a horse, there is better insight into how the horse will fare in a particular race when you know on which course the race will take place.

THE OLD COURSE
The Cheltenham Old Course is the original course and is a shorter, tighter and gentler run. It’s much less demanding than the New Course, and the loop back towards the finish post cuts in a lot earlier. This means the Old Course is used for speedier horses who love to charge on enthusiastically, as opposed to the more steady, disciplined horses who feature in the longer steeplechase races on the New Course.
The last half mile of the Old Course is uphill, and there are some tight turns. Yet there are usually fewer changes of the lead on this course compared to the New Course. There are also only four starting positions at the Old Course, including one in front of the grandstand.
The Old Course is used on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cheltenham Festival, meaning betting often focuses on more excitable sprinters during these two days.
THE NEW COURSE
The New Course is used for the final two days of the Cheltenham Festival and will include The Gold Cup. If the Old Course is about speed, then the New Course is about stamina. It requires real staying power from the horses for them to succeed. The New Course runs in a wider arch into the countryside before coming back towards the grandstands. The additional bend on the New Course offers a wider racetrack and a more gradual charge towards the final straight. It breaks from the Old Course after an open ditch and features just two extra jumps before the charge to the post begins. There’s a steep climb to the top of the hill on the New Course, which makes it a stamina-sapping run. Consequently, trainers will generally field their most durable horses for races on the New Course.

A History of the Flat Cap
Come Tuesday 11th March, Cheltenham Racecourse will be filled with a veritable sea of Flat Caps as racegoers don their finest attire for the Cheltenham Festival. You could readily conclude that the crowds lack imagination and prefer to blend in, and perhaps they do. However, there’s something about a hat—particularly a flat cap—that can (not always) impart an air of grace, dignity, and a sense of a good day’s work, and I love it.
Simple, unassuming and inarguably very British flat caps are more often than not made from robust wool or tweed. They frame faces, complete outfits, and, like
many hats, give off an air of respectability. With the rising popularity of the television show Peaky Blinders, we’ve seen a surge in flat caps everywhere as individuals are reminded of the hat’s enduring appeal. I suspect many people sometimes long for the days when donning your hat was as normal as putting on your shoes. So, when an event like the Cheltenham Festival comes around, it’s unsurprising that the crowds take full advantage of the opportunity and dig out their flat caps and enjoy the way it makes them feel. Cheltenham Festival really is about more than horseracing.
The flat cap can trace its roots back to fourteenth-century northern England. Think of a medieval Knight doffing his cap to a fair maiden. During this time, it was called a Bonnet, which lasted for about three hundred years before the term ‘cap’ came along.

The flat cap remained the uniform of the working classes for the next four hundred years. In a society where everyone wore a hat, social class dictated the kind of hat you wore. The flat cap was an immediate indicator of your social standing as a working-class member of society.
By 1920, the flat cap had become a cornerstone of British fashion and was even adopted as part of school uniforms. It was worn by all social classes, from fruit and veg sellers to gentlemen to farmers. By the 1930s, it was declining in popularity as fashion began to be less restricted.
In 1571, an act of parliament was passed in support of the woollen trade in Great Britain. It decreed that all men aged six years and above had to wear woollen caps or hats to avoid paying a fine of around three farthings. The law didn’t apply to the nobility or gentlemen. By the time the act was repealed in 1597, the flat cap had become firmly established as the hat of the working class.
Traditionally made from wool or tweed, the flat cap is characterised by a thin, small and rounded stiff brim. It bears a similarity to the newsboy’s hat but lacks the hat’s roundness, multi-panelled construction and button on top.
PRESENT DAY
In recent history, the flat cap’s popularity has ebbed and flowed, often driven by popular culture. It has, however, remained an enduring part of rural culture. It brings me great pleasure to see another resurgence of broader popularity for the flat cap, and what better place to see it than on many heads enjoying the thrill at Cheltenham Festival.

RECIPE
Bacon, Egg, and Avocado Breakfast
Sandwich
Whether you’re off to the races or simply fancy a champion breakfast, this sandwich will fill you up with satisfying flavours. I can’t abide shop-bought sandwiches; they always feel miserable. But a sandwich made at home, especially a breakfast sandwich, has the potential to be something really comforting and delicious. And of course, a sandwich is never complicated, and we’re all about keeping things simple here. Try my recipe for all the flavour and none of the fuss.
Ingredients
• 4 Slices of your favourite bread
• 2 Medium Eggs
• Bacon – we like ours from Eastleach Downs Organic Farm
• 4 slices mature cheddar
• An Avocado sliced
• Fresh baby spinach
• Salt, pepper, ground turmeric and smoked paprika
Method
STEP 1
Start by heating a pan for your bacon on medium heat. Nowadays, the general consensus is that no extra oil is needed for frying bacon, and hey, why mess with the flavour? After a minute, add your bacon and cook. When the fat starts to run from the bacon, cook the rashers on each side for 1-3 minutes, depending on how you like them. When cooked, set aside and cover to keep them warm.
STEP 2
Set your bread out on a plate with a coating of butter. Place the cheese on two slices.
STEP 3
Cut up your avocado and mash. Then, divide evenly onto two slices on top of the cheese. Then, layer on a few leaves of spinach.
STEP 4
Cut up your avocado and mash. Then, divide evenly onto two slices on top of the cheese. Then, layer on a few leaves of spinach.
STEP 5
Heat the pan again without cleaning it before frying the eggs. The egg will be coated beautifully in the bacon’s flavours. Fry your eggs adding a sprinkle of paprika, ground turmeric and a crack of salt and pepper. When cooked, layer on top of the avocado.
STEP 6
Add your bacon to the top of the sandwich, place your piece of bread on top, cut and enjoy.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2025
The Cheltenham Gold Cup typically occurs on the fourth day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the most significant race in the British and Irish jump season calendar. The prize money amounts to an impressive £625,000, and last year, an extraordinary 71,500 people attended the Cheltenham Festival on Gold Cup day. It’s also estimated that an astonishing 220,000 pints of Guinness were consumed over the event’s four days, plus 9,000 gallons of tea and five tons of cheese. Whatever happens, it’s always a day to remember.
Provided everything goes according to plan, last year’s Gold Cup winner, Galopin Des Champs, will be back for Willie Mullins and attempt to win the race for the third time in a row. Best Mate was the last horse to achieve this in 2004; it’s guaranteed to be a thrilling and exciting race.
