Nightclub bouncer escapes shotgun attack in Orihuela
In a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of
Saturday morning, Spain’s National Police arrested three men in
Orihuela, after they fired a shotgun at a nightclub bouncer who had refused them entry for being excessively drunk. The doorman, fortunately, escaped with mild injuries and is reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical attention. The altercation began at 6am when the trio, aged between 41 and 45, were denied entry to the nightclub in Avenida Teodormio, due to their visibly drunk state. This initial refusal of the Spanish men led to a heated argument between the bouncer and the disgruntled individuals. Subsequently, the men left the premises, only to return shortly afterward in a vehicle armed with a shotgun. One of them was armed with a shotgun with which he fired at the doorman up to three times. The doorman was hit in the legs by the gunshots, but his injuries are said only to be minor. Disturbing images and videos circulating on social media captured the armed men arriving at the scene and the aftermath of the incident, showcasing the damage they inflicted on the nightclub’s entrance. The three attackers quickly left the
scene, although the Orihuela Police were quickly on their trail resulting in an arrest being made within just a few minutes by agents assigned to the Citizen Assistance Group of National Police in Orihuela. A rapid response by law enforcement ensured the swift apprehension of the suspects, who now face charges of attempted manslaughter. Notably, one of the arrested individuals had already been prohibited from possessing
weapons, adding an additional charge for violating that preventive measure. Despite the arrests, the shotgun used in the attack was not recovered during the apprehension. The incident raises concerns about the escalating security situation, emphasising the need for robust measures to maintain public safety. The injured bouncer, transported to the Vega Baja hospital with mild injuries from the shotgun projectiles, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by those working in the nightlife industry. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure that justice is served and to address any underlying issues contributing to such acts of violence. A second bouncer was treated by the medical tea for an anxiety attack. As the community grapples with the implications of this shocking event, it underscores the importance of a collaborative effort between law enforcement, businesses, and the public to foster a safe and secure environment for all. Rojales leads way paying tribute Rojales launches new investment to concentration camp victims projects that will improve the infrastructure of the municipality The municipality of Rojales recovered this Wednesday the memory of the three Rojaleros killed between late 1941 and early 1942 in the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen-Gusen. The three tiles with the names of the republicans Felipe Carbonell Figueroa, Manuel Ferrández Garri and Antonio Navarro Chazarra were unveiled at the main door of the Rojales Town Hall next to the work of the sculptor Carlos Carmona. With
this, this Town Hall becomes the only one in the Vega Baja to place the memory tiles in its building. The emotional ceremony was attended by Felipe Carbonell’s son, who received numerous tokens of affection from the people present at this act of justice and historical memory and who, together with the Mayor, Antonio Pérez, was in charge of placing a laurel wreath next to the plaques. The event included speeches
by the Councillor for Culture, Inmaculada Chazarra, the philosopher Amable López and Gines Saura on behalf of the association of historical memory of the province of Alicante (COAMHI). Also present were members of the association of relatives repressed by the Franco regime in the province of Alicante, as well as representatives of all the political groups of the municipal corporation of Rojales (PSOE, PP, Ciudadanos and PADER).

Despite the votes against by the PP, Ciudadanos and PADER, the financing proposal presented by the councillor for Finance, Fernando Suria, went ahead with the casting vote of the mayor, Antonio Pérez, as one of the members of the government team was absent from the plenary session. These investments valued at almost two million euros will be budgeted through a loan
awarded to Caja Rural Central which was one of the three entities presented to the tender promoted by the council of Finance. The councillor for the Treasury, Fernando Suria, says that “the first step to be able to start any investment project is to have the necessary funding and that is what we have approved in the last plenary, despite the votes against the opposition” and describes the projects funded as “very necessary for the town”.

Alicante-Elche Airport poised for record-breaking year In a recent announcement, Valencian President Carlos Mazon expressed optimism that Alicante-Elche airport is set to close the year 2023 with a historic milestone of welcoming 10 million foreign tourists. Mazon’s comments came during a visit to Alicante, where he attended the presentation by UK budget carrier EasyJet about their upcoming base at the airport starting in 2024. Mazon highlighted that the impressive numbers reinforce the need for further expansion, advocating for the construction of a second runway to sustain the airport’s growth. He conveyed his satisfaction with the airport’s performance, stating, “We are very happy and very hopeful that the yearend numbers will be record figures for
the airport—a historic figure.” Pointing to 2019 as a benchmark year before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mazon acknowledged that 2022 was a “very good” year. However, he underscored that the figures for 2023 indicate a resurgence, asserting that Alicante “has returned to win, not just to stay.” Expressing both pride and the challenges ahead, Mazon emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and growth. He revealed the existence of a master plan for the airport, currently in progress, and stressed the necessity of reaching the “next level,” advocating for the prompt implementation of a second runway.

Just two weeks after socialist president Pedro Sánchez was sworn in for a fresh term, his deputy Yolanda Díaz has expressed a desire to increase the minimum wage in Spain. Head of the socialist (PSOE) government’s left-wing coalition partners, Sumar, Sra Díaz reasoned that the lowest legal salary payable to workers should rise by a figure above the level of inflation, so that employees could ‘regain the spending power they have lost’ since prices began to spiral. This means the minimum wage would have to rise by around 3.7% to 3.8%, or approximately €560 a year before tax. This announcement was made during a conference on achieving equality among women in Spain’s gypsy, or gitana community – a long-established and
settled group that shares roots with the Roma ethnicity. “There’s no better tool for equality than to raise the minimum wage,” Sra Díaz stated, “and there’s no better feminist, anti-poverty or anti-job insecurity policy than this.” She intends to call meetings with trade unions and representatives from the business community to discuss the matter ‘immediately’, in order to deal with the current ‘unprecedented inflation crisis’. Yolanda Díaz’s proposal would mean the lowest earners receiving €1,120 per month before tax, based upon 14 monthly salaries – a double pay packet in August and December. As the 14-month system is rare
nowadays outside the public sector, this would mean 12 monthly salaries every year of about €1,156.30 after tax, or a gross annual wage of €15,680. At present, the minimum wage is a gross €1,080 per month in 14 payments, or an annual €15,120, which gives 12 monthly takehome payments of around €1,132. These minimum wage figures apply to a full-time job which, in Spain, is currently 40 hours per week – or an eight-hour day and five-day week, discounting lunch hours and breaks. Unlike in many countries where the standard working week is 9am to 5pm with an hour for lunch or 9am to 6pm with two hours – giving a 35-hour total – anyone in Spain who works 35 hours a

UNICEF report reveals Fuel prices in Spain alarming child poverty trends in wealthy countries hit yearly lows The United Kingdom finds itself near the bottom of the list of affluent nations grappling with child poverty, ranking just above Colombia and Turkey, according to the latest data published by UNICEF. Slovenia emerged as the leader in addressing child poverty, while some of the world’s wealthiest nations, including the UK, Spain, and Luxembourg, slid to the bottom of the charts. The recently released “Child Poverty in the Midst of Wealth” report card by UNICEF presents a stark picture of the surge in child poverty experienced by some of the wealthiest countries between 2014 and 2021. Despite an overall decrease in poverty by nearly 8% across 40 countries during this period, over 69 million children still lived in households earning less than 60% of the average national income by the end of 2021. UNICEF Innocenti Director Bo Viktor Nylund emphasized, “The impacts of poverty on children are both persistent and damaging,” citing the deprivation of essential needs such as nutritious food,
clothing, school supplies, and a warm home. These deprivations hinder the fulfilment of children’s rights and can lead to long-term physical and mental health challenges. The consequences of childhood poverty extend into adulthood, with affected individuals having lower chances of completing education and earning reduced wages. The report highlights the alarming statistic that individuals born in deprived areas may live eight to nine years less than those born in wealthier areas. In addition, the report underscores significant inequalities in poverty risks, noting that children in lone-parent families are over three times as likely to experience poverty. Children with disabilities and those from minority ethnic or racial backgrounds also face a higherthan-average risk. The period from 2012 to 2019 saw stable economic growth in the countries analyzed, presenting an opportunity for recovery from the 20082010 recession. However,
the report reveals that some of the wealthiest countries witnessed substantial increases in child poverty during this time, with the United Kingdom experiencing a notable 20% rise. The report emphasizes the importance of social protection, quality basic services, employment opportunities with fair wages, and familyfriendly policies in addressing child poverty. It calls on governments and stakeholders to expand social protection, ensure access to essential services, create employment opportunities, and implement measures tailored to the needs of minority groups and singleheaded households. Highlighting successful examples from countries like Poland, Slovenia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the report concludes that improvements in children’s living conditions are achievable, irrespective of a country’s wealth. The findings underscore the urgency for governments to take swift action and learn from successful strategies to ensure the well-being of children today and in the future.
In the lead-up to the December long weekend, Spain witnessed its lowest fuel prices of the entire year, marking a significant decline just before the Constitution and Immaculate Bridge holidays. The downward trend continued in the past week, reflecting a positive development for consumers. As of the latest data from the EU Petroleum Bulletin, covering the period between 28th November and 4th December, the average cost per litre of gasoline in Spain reached 1.572 euros, showing a 0.82% decrease. Meanwhile, the average price of diesel recorded a nearly 1% reduction, settling at 1.543 euros per litre during the same period. These figures were based on information gathered from over 11,400 service stations across the country. The European Commission’s Oil Bulletin, aimed at enhancing transparency in oil prices and fortifying the internal market, provides weekly consumer price updates for petroleum products in EU nations. The data, submitted every
Wednesday, is disseminated to subscribers on Thursdays. The latest pricing statistics indicate that gasoline has experienced its tenth consecutive drop since the conclusion of September, while diesel has seen its ninth consecutive decrease since the beginning of October. It’s worth noting that these average prices represent the period from the last Tuesday of November to the first Monday of December and may not fully capture the rates during the ongoing “Operation Exit” for the December long weekend. Last weekend was expected to witness nearly eight million long-distance road trips, according to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). The recent decline in fuel prices aligns with the broader trend observed since the end of September. The November figures represent the lowest levels reached this year, providing relief for drivers during the holiday season. Spanish Media Association Christmas will come to the coast files €550 Million lawsuit against Meta The Information Media Association (AMI), representing 83 media outlets, has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, accusing it of engaging in unfair competition in online advertising by purportedly flouting European Union (EU) regulations on data protection. AMI, which represents major Spanish newspapers such as El País, El Mundo, ABC, and La Vanguardia, has demanded a substantial €550 million from Meta. The lawsuit, filed at Madrid’s mercantile courts, alleges “systematic and massive non-compliance” with EU data protection regulations from May 2018, when they came into effect, until July 2023. The primary accusation centres around Meta’s alleged disregard for EU rules requiring user consent for the utilization of their data in advertising profiling. The association contends that Meta has consistently failed to adhere to this requirement, compromising the privacy rights of European citizens. Meta, in response to the legal action, refrained from commenting, citing a lack
of access to the legal documents. The core of Meta’s revenue generation has long been rooted in behavioural advertising, a practice involving the tracking of individual online behaviour, such as web browsing habits, mouse clicks, and app usage. This data is then leveraged to create targeted advertising profiles for users. However, recent court rulings have challenged Meta’s ability to justify its advertising methods within the framework of the EU’s data privacy regulations. In a pivotal decision in July, the EU’s highest court ruled against Meta, stating that the company cannot compel users in the 27-nation bloc to accept personalized ads; instead, users must provide explicit and voluntary consent. In response, Meta introduced adfree versions of Facebook and Instagram for European users at a monthly subscription fee. AMI asserts that Meta’s use of personal data without proper consent has provided the American tech giant with an “illegitimately obtained
competitive advantage,” posing an indirect threat to the livelihood of Spanish media organizations. In a call to action, the association urged advertisers in both the public and private sectors to support “safe, reliable, and responsible media” that respect citizens’ rights and contribute to the promotion of democratic values in Spain. Irene Lanzaco, the Director General of the association, emphasised, “The time has come to put an end to the behavior of technology companies that can afford to pay million-dollar penalties to continue failing to comply with regulations, destroying the market in which we operate and making the illegitimately obtained income their own.”
The Councillor for Festivities, Rocío Ortuño, has settled the ongoing controversy over whether or not Orihuela will have lights during the upcoming Christmas holidays, after nothing was put in place. However, the lights will be turned on in the Gabriel Miró Glorieta, on 15th December, to coincide with the opening of the Solidarity Market. “They won’t be what I would have liked, but there will be lights.” She explained the ‘poisoned inheritance’ that she received from the previous government team. “They were aware of the situation in which they left the Festivities Department, which was dismantled, without staff, without a budget and without contracts.” “With this background we have done the impossible so that Orihuela has a dignified Christmas where the most important thing is the boys and girls. With the money we had, we had to guarantee the Santa Claus parade, the Village, the Three Kings Parade and the music, and the little money
that was left is what we have allocated to the Christmas lights.” Although there will be lights for the city and the coast, the councillor has apologised to the districts because they are the ones that have been affected by this contract, as there is no budget for festive illuminations
in the villages. Rocío Ortuño is convinced that the previous government team of PSOE and Ciudadanos “was aware of how they left the council and did not work to resolve this problem that affects all Oriolanos. I repeat, we are going to have Christmas lights, very few, but we will have them.”
Spain expels two US Embassy staff for infiltrating intelligence service Spain has expelled two staff members from the US embassy for allegedly infiltrating the Spanish Intelligence Service (CNI) through the bribery of two of its officers, as reported by El País. The expulsion follows the recent arrest of two Spanish intelligence officers, disclosed by government ministers earlier last week and initially reported by El Confidencial news website. The charges against the arrested officers involve passing on confidential information to Washington, although specific details remain undisclosed. The suspicious activities of the CNI agents first came to light when they were observed accessing classified information
beyond their designated responsibilities. The nature of the information conveyed to the US embassy remains unclear. El País reported that the two US embassy staff members, instrumental in recruiting the CNI agents, have been discreetly expelled from Spain. The newspaper states, “At least two US agents stationed at the US Embassy in Madrid, who were directly involved in the recruitment of CNI spies, have been discreetly expelled from Spain.” Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares have reportedly engaged with the US ambassador separately, seeking an explanation for the
incident. Addressing the issue during an informal conversation with foreign journalists, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged the unease caused in Madrid but refrained from criticising Washington, emphasising that the situation had been resolved. El País indicated that the arrests occurred approximately “two months ago” after an investigation initiated before the summer. One of the detained individuals is described as a “middle-ranking member of CNI who had been recruited ... to obtain secret information on demand in exchange for a large sum of money,” with the other being identified as his assistant.
Telefónica announces plans to cut 25% of Spanish workforce
In a move to enhance efficiency and address financial challenges, Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica is set to reduce its domestic workforce by nearly 5,100 jobs, constituting approximately 25% of its current staff in Spain. This announcement comes as part of the company’s broader efforts to streamline operations, boost productivity, and address technical considerations, according to a spokesperson from the UGT union. Telefónica, a major player in the telecommunications sector, currently employs around 21,000 individuals in Spain and boasts a global workforce exceeding 103,000. The company operates in 12 countries, including Brazil,
Britain, and Germany. The decision to trim the workforce follows a trend observed in several European telecoms firms, such as BT and Vodafone, which have also announced job cuts this year. Intense competition in a progressively low-cost market has prompted these strategic measures. Telefónica, like many of its European counterparts, faces the challenge of managing substantial debt levels, causing concerns among investors about its solvency, particularly in light of rising interest rates. To address its debt situation, Telefónica has undertaken asset sales in recent years, including
the divestment of its towers portfolio in Europe and Latin America to US infrastructure specialist American Tower for €7.7 billion in 2021. Market apprehensions regarding Telefónica’s debts have led to a decline in its share price, falling from nearly €23 in 2007 to just over €4 at present. Despite these challenges, the company reported a net profit of €2 billion last year. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP GBP made strong gains against the US dollar last week but receded at the beginning of this week. For GBP/EUR and GBP/USD, last week was one of the most impressive weeks for sterling this year, with GBP/EUR climbing 1.5 cents and GBP/USD up 1.2 cents. This took GBP/EUR to within 1 cent of its best rate this year, which topped 1.1780 during the summer. GBP/USD still has a way to climb as this breached 1.30 over the same period and is well below the medium-term historical average of around 1.40 in previous years. Against the euro, sterling has been flat this week. It has not broken past 1.1690, with the resistance level at 1.17, and has not gone lower than 1.1640 – giving the pair a range of only a half-cent. This is compared to the fluctuation of 1.5 cents we saw from GBP/EUR last week. Although there was not much to note this week, UK data has been broadly positive recently, with GDP and labour market data beating expectations. However, UK inflation is looking stickier, with many surveys suggesting price rises will not slow as much as expected. The market doesn’t anticipate any further interest rate rises in the UK but that they will stay “higher for longer”. We’ll likely have more insight into this narrative after the Bank of England’s meeting next Wednesday 13th December. With sterling rising so quickly over the last month, many analysts have suggested the pound is now in ‘overbought’ territory. This could mean a swift rebound or correction is more likely if any upcoming data releases are perceived to go the ‘wrong’ way.
We’re looking at UK CPI inflation as one of the riskiest events this month for both sides of the market and will be released on 20th December. Higher-than-expected UK inflation could support the higher-for-longer UK interest rate narrative, which could positively impact the pound.

EUR German and total EU inflation dropped further than expected last week. German CPI fell more than the expected 3.5%, landing at 3.2%, from 3.8% last month. CPI inflation in the whole European Union followed a similar path, dropping to 2.4% from 2.9% from October to November. While this could be positive for the European economy and may help it grow, the reduced inflation could cause currency weakness as it approaches the central bank’s 2% target. The euro performed well last week, with EUR/ USD reaching over 1.10 at its peak for the first time since August. Levels have since fallen to more rangebound territory of around 1.07 – 1.08 this week – however, this could suggest there is more to come from the single currency. Thursday saw the latest data released for the EU’s GDP, which decreased by 0.1% for the quarter, in line with Eurostat’s initial estimate. Year-on-year growth was flat at 0.0%, slightly less than the marginal growth anticipated by the markets, forecast at 0.1%. We will be keen to see the commentary from the European Central Bank meeting on Wednesday next week, as the market is now pricing in 4 interest rate cuts (i.e., 1%) in 2024.

Dará thus began a weekend of Christmas solidarity market with the participation of 18 associations and groups. San Miguel de Salinas hosts a Christmas trade fair full of activities
San Miguel de Salinas has everything ready to live an intense and endearing Christmas. This Friday, December 8th, at 6:30 p.m., the Christmas lighting and inauguration of the Nativity scene will take place, giving way to different activities such as the Christmas trade fair that will
take place on December 16th and 17th in Plaza Jaime I On Saturday the 16th, after the inauguration, there will be a jazz concert, children’s workshops, face painting, mulled wine tasting, in addition to the tourist train that will be in San Miguel throughout the day, and to end the day, a concert by

Hundreds of parents join together to denounce the state of Orihuela parks
The disgust of hundreds of neighbours with the state of the Orihuela playgrounds has led them to create a profile on Facebook and a WhatsApp group to raise their voices and denounce the deficiencies and lack of security that exist in these spaces both in the center and in the coast and districts. In this group called “United by the neglect of Orihuela parks” we can see the reality of the playgrounds in the municipality,
practically destroyed, with deficiencies in all their elements with the danger that entails. And there are broken padding and swings, slides without stairs or games with loose moorings, where spikes also appear. There is a long etcetera that puts the safety of boys and girls at risk, denounce the fathers and mothers, who have already brought it to the attention of the City Council in writing, but no solutions are forthcoming.
Fathers and mothers do not know where to take their children to enjoy a proper children’s space. Sometimes, they have to take long trips or even go to a shopping center to offer their children an alternative. That is why this group is studying larger mobilizations and is in the process of taking to the streets in demonstration and demanding the maintenance of parks and gardens in the municipality.

A drug sales point dismantled in Pilar de la Horadada The Civil Guard, with the collaboration of the Local Police, has dismantled a point of sale of cocaine and hashish in Pilar de la Horadada in which the agents have been able to verify a large influx of customers. In the middle of a public street and at any time of the day, the alleged perpetrators dispensed the drug to customers who, without even getting out of the car, purchased it. The Civil Guard from the Pilar de la Horadada post began the operation after having initial suspicions of an alleged crime of drug trafficking in the municipality, with the aim of verifying the facts and, where appropriate, identifying those responsible. Once the investigations began, the agents closed the trail on a possible point of sale, on the street, near a house where the alleged perpetrators probably resided. At one point, probably suspecting that they were being watched, the perpetrators changed location, making the agents’ work more difficult. However, it didn’t take long for investigators to locate them again. They changed residence and installed a new point of sale again on the public road, also in the heart of the urban area of
Pilar de la Horadada. During the course of the investigations, the agents have been able to verify the large influx of clients who came to buy both hashish and cocaine, at any time of the day, and mostly in the afternoon. The clients came by car, and without getting out of the car and through the window, the authors dispensed the doses to them. On November 2, the exploitation phase of the operation was carried out, in which four people were arrested, four men between 32 and 46 years old, one of them of Spanish nationality and three of Moroccan nationality, whom They have a history of similar acts. Two searches have been carried out in the residences of the alleged perpetrators, one of them an apartment, and the
other, an apartment hotel, close to each other, and close to the place from which they were selling, in which 50 grams of cocaine have been seized. , 75 grams of hashish and 2 grams of marijuana, cut and packaged in individual doses ready for sale, in addition to 21,710 euros in cash. They are charged with a crime against public health, for drug trafficking, and another for belonging to a criminal group. The detainees have been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction number 3 of Orihuela, which has ordered the imprisonment of the four alleged perpetrators. The operation has been carried out by the Pilar de la Horadada Civil Guard Post, which has had the collaboration of the Municipal Police.

Why?” Every computer has a BIOS/CMOS battery that keeps the clock running and a few pre-Windows settings for the computer to set
properly. As computers age, this battery inevitably runs out of charge and needs to be replaced. To replace the battery, you need to remove the covers or case, find and identify and replace it with the same battery type. Originally the batteries were soldered in. Later the small button coin cell batteries were used. e.g. CR2032. Replace the battery by removing the casing panels with the computer power disconnected. You may need to Google search for the location of the BIOS battery on your computer. “What are Message Requests in Facebook Messenger?” Message requests are messages from people who are not your Facebook friends. To see them you have to find Message Requests. On a computer open Facebook. Select Messenger. Click on the 3 horizontal dots (Options) and select Message Requests. On a mobile device open the Messenger App. Click on the 3 horizontal lines next to the Chat heading. Select Message Requests to see any requests. When you get a Message Request you have the following options. You can Delete the request. You can select Block to block on Facebook or Messenger. If you reply to the message, then any
subsequent messages appear in your normal message feed. “Do I need to do regular tasks on my Smartphone and Windows computer?” Yes, you do. For optimum performance doing nothing is not an option. On your Windows computer, you need to check for operating system updates. Although you might have automatic updates selected any “Feature” updates require your input to download and install. Consider running a security scan once per month. Also, run Disk Cleanup regularly to clean unwanted junk. On mobile devices, you need to keep your system software up to date by going to Settings/System and select System Updates. You also need to keep the installed Apps up to date by checking in Play Store or App Store depending on whether you have an Android or Apple device. You can set App updates to happen automatically choosing whether or not you download using Data or just when connected to WiFi Clean junk by opening Settings, selecting Storage and clicking on Clean. Sunday 17th December – ITV2, 7.05pm Yetis live in on the top of a mountain in the Himalayas, Nepal, above the clouds and hidden away from sight. Migo is a yeti who abides by the law of the ancient stones held by the Stonekeeper, the yetis’ leader. Migo’s father, Dorgle, projects himself through the air each morning to hit a gong with his head, believing this allows the sun to rise. While learning how to ring the gong, Migo is distracted by the Stonekeeper’s daughter, Meechee, whom he loves, and misses the gong, landing outside the village. There, Migo witnesses a plane crash and finds a “smallfoot” (human), whom the yetis have taken for legend. Migo runs back to tell the villagers what he saw, but has no proof. The Stonekeeper banishes him from the village. Migo is suddenly visited by Gwangi, Kolka, and Fleem who bring him to the Smallfoot Evidentiary Society (S.E.S.), which is led by Meechee. She convinces Migo to be lowered below the clouds despite the stones telling them that there is nothing underneath. After some hesitation, Migo agrees to go, but his rope snaps and Migo falls, where he discovers land.

Charity event for Aspanion Studio 32 shake Benijofar theatre A group of English volunteers will be running a stall in Catral Square for the International day which will be a sponsored event hosted by Catral council. The event will take place on Saturday 16th December from 10.00 am until 8.00 pm and Sunday 17th December from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm The English stall will have a tombola with many great prizes kindly donated by local businesses. To participate on the tombola the cost will be 3 euros. There will also be traditional mince pies or shortbread with mulled wine for 1 euro. The children can take part in a lucky dip with present for 1 Euro. The money over the two days taken is being given to Aspanion. Aspanion was founded in 1985. This NGO was founded by a group of mothers and fathers of children with cancer. They realized that they needed help
and decided to organize themselves. Over the years they have managed to offer care and help to mothers and fathers with a son or daughter diagnosed with cancer, including those affected and their siblings. This help is extended to families who do not live in the Valencian Community and whose children are treated here. Currently Aspanions´s collective is 7043 people. Please come along and support this great and worthy fund raising event that will include live music, lots of stalls, a bouncy castle and face painting. If you would like to to donate

Take a walk through the pine forest of Guardamar until you reach the stunning views at the coast The beautiful pine forest of Guardamar, also known as the Dunes of Guardamar, is a natural park covering 800 hectares and was originally a vast collection of sand dunes. Over the years it has invited various plant species such as pines, palms, and eucalyptus. The sound of birds, the aromas from the foliage and the fresh sea air, make it a perfect place to unwind and disconnect. This peaceful and picturesque park which links Guardamar town centre to the coast, is an ideal location for fresh morning walks, bike rides, dog walking, and
enjoying a picnic amongst nature. The route is mostly paved with wooden walkways leading out to the beach boasting magnificent coastal views, all completely wheelchair accessible. Parking places can be found along the main road of Parque Alfonso XIII, Partida Dunas de Guardamar, 2, 03140. At this point you will see the entrance sign to “Parque Alfonso XIII” where the route begins. GUARDAMAR SAN DUNES REFORESTATION & TOWN DEFENCE PROJECT On December 2, 1897, the Guardamar
Sand Dunes Reforestation and Town Defence Project was passed by a Royal Decree. The intense deforestation that took place in the River Segura’s basin from the 18th century to the early 19th century, together with the erosive processes of the river over the unprotected basin, caused a considerable increase in sediments. These were later redistributed along the coastline by the action of the sea. The force of the easterly wind put the icing on this bitter cake, mobilising these sediments inland. Thus, the dunes advanced at a rate of between

2 and 8 meters per year. To fix these dunes, a reforestation project was declared. It began in 1900 and ended in the 1930s, and has given rise to the current consolidated coastal forest mass, known as ‘la pineda’ or ‘pinewoods’. More than 600,000 trees planted over four decades created a landscape environment of extraordinary ecological, tourist and cultural appeal. Diabetes incidence increases by 42% in four years
• Its increase is closely linked to the increase in obesity in the population • Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and lower limb amputation Dr. Giselle Girón, endocrinologist at the Obesity Unit of the Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, warns that the number of people with diabetes has increased by 42% since 2019, which means it already affects one in seven adults and places us with the second highest rate in Europe.
Diabetes, as explained by Dr. Jorge Cid, a specialist in endocrinology at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and the Obesity Unit at Quirónsalud Alicante, “cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus have skyrocketed due to its close relationship with obesity which, although by itself is not a cause of diabetes, but is an important contributing factor for its appearance”. As specialist Georgio Kyriacos, endocrinologist at Quirónsalud Murcia, clarifies, “the more overweight, the higher the amount of fat in the body that produces an increase in insulin
resistance. As a result, muscle, fat and liver cells do not respond well to insulin and cannot absorb glucose from the blood easily and blood sugar rises. The pancreas, in an attempt to reduce this glycemia, generates more and more insulin until it is exhausted and does not produce large amounts of this hormone, causing hyperglycaemia and consequently diabetes.” Main diseases associated with diabetes Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks,
strokes, and lower limb amputations. “Likewise,” adds Dr. Girón, ” poorly controlled diabetes increases the chances of complications and is the cause of premature death, as well as an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, especially those with poor glycaemic control.” Along these lines, Dr. Cid also warns that “diabetes increases the risk of dementia and depression and increases the risk of bone diseases, including osteoporosis, and of skin and mouth diseases, including gum disease with the consequent loss of teeth.”
Regular check-ups for the care of the diabetic patient Regular check-ups are essential to prevent organ complications caused by diabetes. The Orihuela National Police arrest a couple for defrauding a dental clinic of more than 5,000 euros Last Christmas, our non meat eating relative (new to the family), offered to host Christmas Day lunch. Our 86 year old father grumped all the way through it; we couldn’t blame him - there was no meat or fish in sight, and we were not allowed to bring a dish with us. This year our Aunt has announced that she is inviting the family to lunch. It will be so different; meat dishes, but also plenty of thoughtful veggie dishes (she is a Chef). Our vegan relative has had a fit about the food already. Auntie has done brilliantly, and has even bought wine that has not gone through any kind of non-vegan process. Now, there are complaints that even the smell and look of ‘dead animal’, (as she constantly reminds us), and she won’t be coming. My question is; why should we accommodate this woman’s veganism, when she does not accommodate our meat eating preferences? As it is, whenever there is a family trip out to a restaurant, we’ve all had to bow to her whims just lately, and gone to a restaurant of her choice; it’s becoming quite miserable. Should meat eaters be given the same consideration as vegans? Absolutely. There are so many lifestyle choices these days, and we are bound to upset some folk. Shouldn’t ‘everyone’ exercise tolerance? Of course we
must; that’s what life is about. Just as the meat eaters have bent over backwards for the vegan lady, should she return the gesture and at least have allowed the meat eaters to bring a dish to the dinner table? However, if she is physically repulsed by meat to the point of nausea - what is to be done? We must all learn to live with these things because it is a big wide world out there. Only if there is a situation where feelings erupt into arguments, should the perpetually offended feel it necessary to withdraw from gatherings and get together for drinks later. Though, be careful not to serve smoky bacon flavoured crisps.

Agents of the Orihuela National Police have arrested a couple, a man and woman, aged 51 and 38 respectively, who defrauded a dental clinic and the brother of one of them of more than 5,000 euros. According to the National Police, in the second half of this year, the owner of a dental clinic in the town of Orihuela went to the National Police Station in that city to report a scam that she had suffered in the dental company. During that date, the detained couple went to the clinic so that the man could receive dental treatment. They carried out a study and a budget, increasing the intervention they had to carry out to more than 5,000 euros.
The couple decided to finance the treatment so they requested proof of financing from the clinic, first in the name of the man and then in the name of the woman. Since neither of them were eligible to receive that loan, they spoke with the clinic workers to formalize the financing in the name of the woman’s brother. The victim of the events stated before the Judicial Police Brigade of the National Police of Orihuela that the couple, with great cunning, made him think that the financing was authorized by the author’s brother. She was given all the necessary documentation to carry out the loan application, with the victim indicating that nothing made her suspect that
they were making criminal use of all the data. The two authors were arrested by agents of the National Police for crimes of fraud and identity theft, bringing all the facts to the attention of the Dean of the Investigative Courts of Orihuela. The National Police reports that in this type of crime, not only is the person whose data is stolen to carry out the financing harmed, but the companies also suffer harm. The treatment or service carried out up to that point remains unpaid, since the company has to return the full amount of the financing it has processed. There are also sanctions by these financial institutions on companies that have made irregular loan requests

One injured in a headon accident on the La Murada highway A person was injured last Thursday in a traffic accident on CV980 Carretera La Murada – Abanilla. At 12:30 p.m., a front-to-lateral collision between two articulated trucks was reported. Firefighters from the Orihuela park went to the scene to free one of the drivers who was trapped inside the truck. An intervention that ended at 2 p.m.

Final Day Disaster The SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) autumn 2023 racing season has been the worst on record for cancellations. Out of the planned 26 races only 9 actually went ahead, the remainder having to be canceled for a variety of reason. Then, to cap it all, the final day, December 3rd was a disaster because all the access roads in Los Narejos were closed to traffic for a cycle race, and many of the organisers and competitors were unable to reach the SAMM base at CTD, some after driving for 80 kilometers. There appears to have been no prior notification and even the CTD management seemed not to have known as they had given the OK for the racing to go ahead. Of the nine races, the worst three results for each boat were discarded and, although
Abbey Anglers & Rods N Reels On Tuesday and Wednesday the 5th & 6th of December both clubs joined together and we fished a two day Christmas festival at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. 33 anglers were due to take part bit after a couple of late cancellations due to health reasons 31 anglers eventually competed. The field was split into 3 sections over the entire complex with pegs A1 to 7, 8 to 16 and 26 to 40 being used. The festival was run on a points basis and the one with the lowest section points would secure the trophy. Day one The match was dominated by Neil McBernie, who despite a bad back fish the pole from peg 8 at 16m with
many of the individual races were very closely fought, the outright seasons winner had a big lead over the other boats. Cuatro, a Gamba dinghy of the Shoestring Group, and sailed by a number of different crews, scored five firsts and a second in the six counting races to finish, with just 5.75 points on the low score system. A fantastic performance by all the crews. The second place boat, Shoestring Dos a Laser 2000, mainly sailed by the same crew, was 7 points behind but still did extremely well with one first, three second and two third places. The full results were as per the table. A score of 12 indicates that a boat didn’t race. We all hope for a better 2024 racing season. maggots to catch some great carp . His total of 41.400kg also include a carp of over 6kg and he was the runaway winner. In second place was Richard Smith who was drawn on the same section on peg 13. He also fished the pole this time down the middle with maggots and returned 20.84kg. In third place and once again on this section but on peg 16 was Doug Hornblow. Doug fished the method feeder with maggots and weighed 12.98kg. The other sections were a much tougher affair with Bob Robinson winning the section on peg 6 with 11.600kg and Richard King winning the other section with a lowly 7.72kg from peg 36.
Day Two Take two and yes Neil McBernie was once again the runaway winner. This time drawn on peg 15 he used similar tactics and weighed 36.22kg. this not only took the spoils on the day but also won him the festival with a commanding performance over the two days with 2 points and 77.62kg. In second place was Harry Billings. Harry was drawn on peg 4 and caught carp, barbel, mullet and bass for 16.76kg. He caught mainly on the pole down the middle or across on maggots. In third place for the second day running was Dough Hornblow who once again mainly fished the feeder with maggots for 15.86kg of mainly mullet from peg 6. The other second was won by Neil
Bomford from peg 26 with 8.28kg consisting of 4 carp on pellets or maggots. This also earned Neil second place in the festival with3 points and a combined weight of 17.30kg The third place overall went to Richard Smith with4points and a combined weight of 26.82kg. Everyone won a prize on this festival and was fished in a very good spirit and everyone who took part certainly enjoyed it. After the match we visited the Bombay Indian in Catral and enjoyed a fabulous meal that was laid on free of charge by the clubs. Pictured is Harry Billing with Wednesdays net.
