The Orihuela City Council has begun to implement a new container system in Orihuela Costa, following a detailed technical study. This report has allowed for a precise analysis of the area’s current situation and the de nition of an action plan tailored to the areas current and future needs.
The proposal is based on a comprehensive review of the waste collection system, taking into account factors such as seasonal population growth, urban morphology, and the need to meet environmental objectives set by regional, national, and European regulations.
The technical study carried out by the Department of Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste (MSW) in the Orihuela Costa area aims primarily to improve the e ciency of the waste collection system, adapting it to the population, urban, and environmental conditions of the coast.
The main objectives have been de ned as: ensuring a uniform distribution of containers, ensuring their presence in all residential areas and areas close to homes; optimising collection routes and the municipal resources employed, improving service e ciency and reducing costs associated with its provision;
adapting container capacity to the actual volume of waste generated, especially during months with greater seasonal pressure, when the population increases; and progressively incorporating organic waste into selective collection, complying with current regulatory requirements and reinforcing the municipality’s environmental commitment.
This study also establishes the promotion of waste separation at source through the implementation of complete collection islands that facilitate the correct classi cation of the di erent waste categories for people. In addition, the collection system has been standardised, prioritizing side-
loading containers, which are more e cient and modern.
The Councillor for Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste, Rocío Ortuño, emphasised the importance of this advance for the coast with “the new container provides a leap in quality in waste collection, adapting the service to the reality of Orihuela Costa,” concluded the councillor, who noted that in recent months the City Council has acquired more than 1,600 containers.
Ryanair announces bigger cabin bag allowance
Budget airline Ryanair has announced it will increase the size of its free cabin bag allowance by 20 per cent. It comes after European lawmakers voted to adopt a proposal that will regulate the dimensions of hand luggage that air passengers can take on board at no additional cost.
Under the new rules, travellers taking a flight in the EU would have the right to carry a personal bag, such as a handbag or rucksack, and a small hand luggage item on board at no extra cost.
It standardises the maximum dimensions of personal bags to 40 x 30 x 15 centimetres, and hand luggage items to a maximum size of 100cm and a weight of 7kg.
The proposed law still needs to get approval from 55 per cent of EU member states, which may see modifications made to the ruling. If it is adopted following negotiations starting this month, the new
rules would extend to all flights within the EU.
Ryanair has said it will bring in the new free cabin baggage allowance “over the coming weeks”.
The current dimensions for a free personal item are 40 x 25 x 20cm - a volume of 20 litres. The airline is now aligning itself with the new hand luggage proposal by increasing the bag width from 25 to 30cm. This will make the new dimensions 40 x 30 x 20cm - a volume of 24 litres.
This is larger than the European Parliament’s measurements to allow passengers who already have a “Ryanair-compatible” cabin bag to continue using it.
“This change will be implemented over the coming weeks, as our airport bag sizers are adjusted,” a spokesperson for Ryanair said.
Industry association Airlines for Europe (A4E) has also confirmed that its member airlines have started applying the proposed
new set of dimensions for a personal item.
“All A4E airlines will roll out the guaranteed dimensions and have them in place by the end of the 2025 summer season,” the association said in a statement.
“Carriers will continue to permit larger personal items at their discretion, as is already the case for many A4E airlines today.”
For most carriers, this still means continuing with their current cabin bag dimensions. British Airways, Jet2 and easyJet all have allowances that already exceed the new guaranteed dimensions.
Football star Diogo Jota dies in car accident in Spain
Liverpool’s Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 26, were killed in a car crash in Spain’s Zamora province, Castilla y León, early on Thursday morning (3rd July), according to Spanish state-owned RTVE, citing local re ghters and the Guardia Civil.
Diogo Jota had got married just 10 days ago. He helped Liverpool win the Premier League last season and also won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Merseyside team.
Jota and his brother were reportedly found dead after their car went o a road shortly after midnight (Wednesday night) and burst into ames. Police are investigating the causes. They have said that there were no other vehicles involved.
Jota also played for Portugal’s national team. His brother Silva played with Portuguese club Pena el in the lower divisions. Jota arrived at An eld from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the
club in all competitions. He also had spells at Atlético de Madrid and Porto. He also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice winning the UEFA Nations League.
The tra c accident reportedly took place on the A52 motorway in Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora. The city of Zamora is about 55 kilometres from the border with Portugal.
According to Spanish media, the Portuguese brothers died aboard a Lamborghini that, for reasons under investigation, left the Rías Bajas motorway
(A52) while heading towards the town of Benavente, at around 12.40am on Thursday morning.
Spain’s news agency EFE reported that the car may have su ered a tyre blowout while overtaking, causing it to leave the road and catch re.
Medical services on the scene could only con rm the deaths of the two occupants of the vehicle.
According to Zamora’s provincial government, the bodies of the two occupants of the car were discovered charred.
Guardamar drugs network dismantled
The Guardia Civil and the National Police have dismantled a criminal gang tra cking synthetic drugs in a joint operation that resulted in the seizure of more than 203 kilograms of pills and powder. The operation resulted in the arrest of three men, who were remanded in custody without bail after being brought before a court.
The investigation, carried out within the framework of the Recreation Area Security Plan, began when the group, based in Guardamar del Segura, aroused the o cers’ suspicions due to their extravagant lifestyle.
As the investigation progressed, a patrol from the Guardamar del Segura police station detected a large-capacity van that, upon noticing the police presence, attempted to evade the o cers. After being intercepted, o cers decided to inspect the interior, but the occupants objected, reporting that it had a special electronic
locking system and that the cargo area was inaccessible.
But the o cers insisted on opening the vehicle.
The alleged perpetrators had designed a complex electronic locking system in the rear that prevented it from being easily opened and had been adapted to conceal drugs. Once they gained access, o cers found a large quantity of powder and pills hidden in boxes of electrical equipment. In total, 40 bags of MDMA, ketamine, and other pills, prepared for distribution, weighing 203 kilograms, equivalent to approximately 334,000 doses.
During the search of the suspects’home in Guardamar del Segura, 16,265 euros in cash was seized, along with industrial machinery for the preparation of the substances, precision scales, vacuum packaging machines, and various documents relevant to the case.
The operation was carried out by o cers from the Guardamar del Segura Main Post, the Organized Crime and AntiDrug Team (EDOA) of the Alicante Command, and the Drug and Organiz¡sed Crime Unit (UDYCO) of the Murcia National Police.
The operation also had the support of the Canine Service, which participated in the search of the building.
This operation represents a signi cant blow to international drug tra cking networks and has allowed a large quantity of drugs to be removed from the market, thus contributing to the protection of public health and safety in areas with particular tourist appeal.
The detainees, three Polish men aged 33, 37, and 40, charged with belonging to a criminal group, drug tra cking, and money laundering, have been brought before Torrevieja Court No. 3, which ordered them to be held in prison without bail.
AP-7 tunnel in Pilar de la Horadada reopens to traffic
Last Thursday (3rd July) saw the long-awaited reopening of the Cartagenabound lane of the Pilar de la Horadada tunnel on the AP-7. The tunnel, located at kilometre 772 of the Mediterranean Motorway, has been closed since 9th May, when a serious accident occurred in which a truck driver carrying a load of ammable material died. The collision caused a re with several explosions that
damaged the infrastructure of the tunnel.
The reopening of the section was scheduled for last weekend, but on the Friday, (27th June), the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez Sánchez, announced that tra c would remain closed for several more days until the work was fully completed.
This stretch is heavily used by local residents and
holiday-makers alike who come to enjoy the beaches of Pilar de la Horadada, Mil Palmeras, and Campoamor. The closure of the tunnel and the rerouting of tra c towards Cartagena along the N-332 to San Pedro has caused regular long tra c jams in the area, making it a congestion point, especially during periods like the current holiday departure season.
Two young men recover after late night shooting in Pilar de la Horadada
Two young men are recovering after sustaining injuries in a shooting incident early Monday morning in Pilar de la Horadada. The attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. near Jesuitas beach, involved what the Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU) described as an air ri e, though other sources suggest conventional rearms may have been used.
The victims, aged 17 and 18, were transported to Torrevieja Hospital by Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) and Basic Life Support (BLS) units. The younger of the two, a 17-year-old minor, was seriously injured with a bullet lodged in his lung. He underwent emergency surgery and remains under close observation but is now in stable condition. The 18-year-old sustained a less severe injury, with a pellet lodged in the subcutaneous tissue and no damage to
internal organs. He too underwent surgery and is currently out of danger.
The Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police, based at the Torre de la Horadada station, have launched an investigation into the incident. They are working to clarify the nature of the weapon used and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
So far, no arrests have been
reported, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The beach area where the shooting occurred is a popular summer destination, and the attack has raised concerns among local residents and tourists.
O cials continue to monitor the condition of both victims as the investigation progresses.
Guardamar expands bicycle and ccooter parking as part of sustainable tourism plan
The City Council of Guardamar del Segura has introduced new bicycle and scooter parking facilities across the municipality, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mobility and tourism. This initiative is part of the town’s broader Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan, which aims to improve environmentally friendly infrastructure and reduce vehicle dependency.
Mayor José Luis Sáez announced that the project focuses on enhancing the northern entrance to Guardamar, where a dedicated bike lane has been constructed. This new lane connects the entrance of the town directly to the Marina de las Dunas de Guardamar, one of the area’s key recreational and shing hubs. The recently installed bicycle and scooter parking areas complement this improvement, providing convenient options for residents and visitors who opt for greener forms of transport.
In total, a dozen parking points have been strategically placed throughout high-tra c and essential zones in the municipality. These include locations near the town hall, school entrances, the seafront promenade, and other areas of interest. The goal is to make sustainable transportation more accessible, practical, and attractive for daily use.
According to Mayor Sáez, the project not only supports the town’s environmental goals but also enhances public services by
promoting healthier and more responsible travel habits. The installation of these new facilities marks the completion of an important phase in Guardamar’s mobility plan and demonstrates the town’s proactive approach to sustainable urban development.
With this e ort, Guardamar del Segura continues to position itself as a forwardthinking destination that values environmental stewardship and improved quality of life for its residents and visitors alike.
June is likely to be one of Europe’s hottest Junes on record as extreme heat driven by climate change has raged across the continent. As Europe bakes in its rst major heatwave of the year, temperature records are being broken across the continent.
During June, countries experienced temperatures more typical of July and August, with records broken from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean.
The Portuguese weather service (IPMA) reported 46.6 °C in Mora on 29 June - the hottest ever recorded in mainland Portugal during June. Norway’s Banak station reached 32.5°C, the highest temperature ever recorded within the European Arctic for the month. The extreme heat has brought health warnings, school closures and restrictions on outdoor work.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has said that for the continent as a whole, this month is likely to rank among the top ve warmest Junes on record.
Scientists have said that this extended
period of above-average temperatures is being caused by a heat dome. This is when a high-pressure area stays over the same place for days or even weeks, trapping the hot air below it. This acts something like a saucepan lid, causing temperatures to become hotter and hotter.
Last week, a strong area of high pressure built over Western Europe. It extended up across Spain and Portugal into France, then spread to Germany and Italy over the weekend.
Spanish weather service Aemet said that an “extremely hot” June had “pulverised records”, surpassing the normal averages for July and August.
It recorded an average of 23.6°C - the highest for the month in 64 years and 0.8°C higher than the previous record set in 2017. Provisional data shows that nine days in June broke records for their respective dates. Aemet says that in an “undisturbed climate”, ve record warm days would be expected in an entire year.
Ramón Pascual, a delegate for Spain’s weather service in Barcelona, told The Associated Press the “very
Hottest June on record predicted
intense heat wave” is clearly linked to global warming. High sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean are not helping either, as they reduce any cooling e ects a nearby body of water might have.
The June-July heatwave is exposing millions of Europeans to high heat stress, according to Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the ECMWF.
“And our reanalysis data shows that many Europeans have experienced very high temperatures for the period since the start of June,” she adds.
“The temperatures observed recently are more typical of the months of July and August and tend to only happen a few times each summer. We saw it again in 2024, the warmest year on record.”
Burgess also says climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and more intense, and they are now impacting larger geographical areas.
Spain joins EU member states opposition of budget overhaul
Fourteen member states are calling for a ‘standalone cohesion policy’ to ensure the next EU long-term budget boosts competitiveness and convergence across EU regions.
With the proposal for the next EU budget after 2027 just around the corner, the political landscape is far from calm. The latest sign of unrest: fourteen member states have endorsed a non-paper opposing the European Commission’s plans to centralise the management and distribution of EU funds.
“Only a distinct and robust budget and a region-based allocation methodology, re ecting the di erent development levels of regions, together with a stand-alone Cohesion Policy dedicated legislation, can ensure that the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) will deliver long-term unity, competitiveness and convergence across EU regions,” states the document.
Spain, Bulgaria, Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia signed the non-paper on “Cohesion Policy in the Future MFF,” aiming to secure a separate pot for narrowing the socioeconomic gap between the richest and poorest European regions.
The call from more than half of the member states comes in response to a leak about the Commission’s plans to create a single funding pot for each EU country and to link the receipt of funds to the ful lment of policy objectives.
The potential centralisation of the management and access to EU money would give greater power to national governments and Brussels, while proving detrimental to regions and other departments within the European Commission.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen is expected to present the budget proposal for the next long-term nancial period (2028–2034) on 16th July — but criticism from regions, member states, MEPs, and industry representatives continues to mount.
Calls grow for urgent action at overcrowded La Loma Health Center
Torrevieja’s La Loma health center, the city’s only 24-hour emergency facility, is under increasing strain as the local population swells beyond 100,000 during the summer months. Once considered a benchmark in the municipality, the aging facility is now facing serious infrastructure and sta ng issues, prompting public outcry.
On Wednesday, the Platform for Public Health organized a demonstration outside the center, collecting complaints from frustrated patients and healthcare workers.
The group highlighted the deteriorating state of the building, which dates back to the 1980s. Reported issues include cracks in the walls, malfunctioning air conditioning, outdated furniture, and persistent leaks during rain. These structural problems are compounded by chronic overcrowding.
Patients regularly experience long delays for appointments and endure hours-long waits in the emergency department. According to the platform,
the health center cannot keep up with the seasonal in ux of residents and tourists. Inadequate sta ng levels and delays in replacing absent personnel further contribute to the healthcare collapse.
The Platform for Public Health is now demanding urgent action from regional authorities. Their key proposal is the construction of a new “La Loma II” health center to better serve the city’s growing population. Alternatively, they call for a
comprehensive renovation and modernization of the current facility to ensure it can meet basic healthcare standards.
Residents, healthcare unions, and patient groups are united in their appeal for improvements, warning that the current conditions put both patients and medical sta at risk. As summer pressures mount, calls for investment in Torrevieja’s primary health infrastructure are becoming increasingly urgent.

New blue zone hours introduced on Ramón Gallud Street
The Torrevieja City Council has announced a change in the regulated parking hours on Ramón Gallud Street. Beginning Monday, July 7, the blue zone will be enforced from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a maximum parking time of two hours.
According to the city’s Police Councilor, Federico Alarcón, the updated schedule aims to improve tra c ow and ensure that more residents and visitors can access the city center for short-term errands and business. Vehicles parked beyond the allowed twohour limit or outside of regulated hours will be subject to nes issued by the Local Police.
The decision to limit parking time is designed to prevent long-term occupancy of public parking spaces in one of Torrevieja’s busiest central areas. Authorities hope this change will increase parking turnover and make it easier for people to nd available spaces throughout the day.
Residents and visitors are urged to pay close attention to new signage and to plan
To enforce this policy, the Local Police will use an automated license plate reader system to monitor parked vehicles and ensure compliance with the posted regulations. Alarcón emphasized that this is not a suggestion but a rm measure that will carry penalties for non-compliance.
their visits accordingly to avoid nes. The City Council has also reminded drivers that enforcement will be strict and that exceeding the time limit, even by a few minutes, could result in a citation.
With these changes, the local government aims to promote better access to city center services while maintaining order and fairness in the use of limited parking resources.
Over the last two weeks, the pound experienced volatility driven by a positive trajectory against many of the G10 currencies. GBP/USD has been trading at just shy of a 4-year high, with levels not seen since October 2021. However, this movement appears to be driven more by USD’s weakness than GBP strength. This view was reinforced on Monday morning when the pound’s levels remained steady despite the UK’s revised Q1 GDP gures remaining unchanged at 0.7%.
The Bank of England’s ongoing hawkish stance on interest rates is likely to remain a key factor. Last week, the central bank’s governor, Andrew Bailey, stated that: “Monetary policy needs to continue to remain restrictive for su ciently long until the risks to in ation returning sustainably to the 2% target in the medium term has dissipated further.”
This week, aside from a couple of speeches from members of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, there were no other signi cant UK data releases expected to impact the currency market. Most of the potential currency volatility was driven from elsewhere.
EUR Europe also experienced a relatively quiet economic data week. On Monday morning, German retail sales gures were released, dropping from 2.9% to 1.6%. Germany also released its CPI gures, with headline in ation easing to 2.0% year-on-year. Notably the
month-on-month in ation rate was at at 0.0%, re ecting falling prices in food, clothing and energy.
In her June 30 speech, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde signalled a strategic shift in the central bank’s approach to monetary policy, emphasising the need for adaptability in a more volatile global environment. She highlighted the importance of responding symmetrically to in ation risks –whether too high or too low, suggesting that interest rates may remain elevated for longer to ensure price stability
On Tuesday morning, the eurozone published its CPI data, with year-on-year in ation, coming in as expected at 2.0%. While this marks an uptick, it also aligns with the ECB’s long-term in ation target. As such, it may give the central bank the exibility to proceed with rate cuts if deemed appropriate.
Most analysts seem to agree that the ECB is nearing the end of its cutting cycle; however, markets remain undecided about whether we’ll see one or two more cuts this year. Currently, forecasts expect a pause at July’s meeting and a cut in September’s.

Security guard hospitalised after pellet gun shooting in San Isidro industrial zone
A security guard was seriously injured late Tuesday night in a shooting incident at the La Granadina industrial estate in San Isidro, Alicante. The 41-yearold victim was struck by airgun pellets while on duty at a business within the industrial zone. The shooting occurred around 11:00 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response.
The injured guard was transported to Torrevieja Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.
Medical sources from the Centro de Información y Coordinación de Urgencias (CICU) con rmed that a second individual also sustained pellet wounds during the same incident. This second victim has also been hospitalized, and their condition remains under medical evaluation with a reserved prognosis.
Although the injuries were caused by an airgun
rather than a conventional rearm, the severity of the attack has raised concern.
Pellet guns, which re small metal projectiles using compressed air, are often viewed as less dangerous than real rearms. However, when used recklessly or at close range, they can cause signi cant harm, as demonstrated in this case.
The Guardia Civil has launched a full-scale investigation but has so far declined to release further details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the inquiry. Authorities are currently working to establish the sequence of events and to identify those responsible for the attack. No arrests have been reported at this time.
This incident has highlighted ongoing safety challenges faced by security personnel in industrial and commercial zones, where the risk of
encountering violence or criminal activity can be unexpectedly high. The rapid response by emergency services and the current e orts by law enforcement re ect a strong commitment to public safety and justice.
O cials are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation progresses. Updates are expected in the coming days as the Guardia Civil continues its e orts to clarify the motives behind the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
This violent episode serves as a reminder that even weapons deemed “less lethal” can result in serious injury, especially when used in acts of aggression. The community awaits answers and reassurance that safety measures will be reinforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Spain cements global tourism lead with 35 million visitors in five months
Spain continues to solidify its reputation as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. According to data released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the country welcomed 35 million international visitors between January and May 2025 — a 5.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge in tourism generated €46.6 billion in revenue, marking an 8.1% rise year-on-year.
The majority of tourists came from the United Kingdom (6.8 million, up 6.9%), followed by France (4.6 million, up 3.9%) and Germany (4.5 million, up 1.8%). British tourists were also the highest spenders, accounting for 16.9% of total expenditure, ahead of the Germans (12.5%) and the French (8.1%).
Regionally, Catalonia led in visitor numbers with 7.3 million tourists (up 2.2%),
followed by the Canary Islands (6.8 million, up 4.1%) and Andalucía (5.4 million, up a strong 9.6%).
Despite the overall strong performance, May’s yearon-year growth was more modest. Spain welcomed 9.4 million international tourists during the month — just a 1.5% increase from May 2024. However, spending reached a recordbreaking €12.2 billion, up 4.9% from the previous year. The average daily expenditure rose to €209 per person, while the average stay lasted 6.9 days.
Leisure tourism continued
to dominate, with 84% of all May spending coming from holiday travelers — a 4.6% rise. Hotels remained the preferred choice, hosting 68.2% of overnight stays, though spending among tourists staying in private homes or with friends and family also rose by 10%.
These gures con rm Spain’s enduring appeal, with most international tourists still traveling independently for leisure, favoring hotel stays but showing increasing interest in alternative accommodations and package tours.
Orihuela Costa to open new primary school with 450 student places
The Orihuela City Council has o cially approved the creation of a new educational center, CEIP Number 20, in Orihuela Costa. The decision, passed during Tuesday’s plenary session, marks a signi cant step toward improving educational infrastructure in the area and addressing the growing demand for school places.
The new school will o er a total of 450 places, with 18 educational units: six dedicated to the Second Cycle of Early Childhood Education and twelve for Primary Education. Of the total places, 150 will be allocated for younger children, and 300 for primary-level students.
CEIP Number 20 is currently operating in prefabricated buildings at 8 Níspero Street in Orihuela Costa. It was formed through the merger of two overcrowded schools—
CEIP Los Dolses and CEIP Playas de Orihuela. The consolidation aims to reduce congestion in the local education system and ensure students can learn in a more suitable and wellresourced environment.
The creation of this new center responds to both current educational needs and projected population growth in the coming academic years. The Council emphasizes that the goal is to provide the best possible learning conditions for students while also easing the burden on nearby
schools that have struggled with limited capacity.
Local authorities see this move as part of a broader strategy to improve public education services in Orihuela Costa, an area that has experienced signi cant population increases in recent years. With the approval now in place, e orts are expected to continue toward enhancing the facilities and transitioning from temporary structures to a permanent school building that meets all modern educational standards.
Orihuela launches first phase of €1 million smart video surveillance project
The Orihuela City Council has announced the public tender for the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of a smart video surveillance system to be deployed across the municipality. This initiative marks the rst phase of a comprehensive, multi-stage security project with an overall investment estimated at over one million euros.
The initial deployment, with a budget of nearly €280,000, will focus on 30 strategic locations, primarily in rural areas and along the coast. These zones, identi ed through technical reports from the Local Police, have shown a higher incidence of criminal activity, rule violations, and antisocial behavior. Currently, they lack the monitoring infrastructure available in Orihuela’s urban center.
Targeted areas include
La Aparecida, Arneva, Raiguero de Bonanza, Camino de Beniel, Camino Viejo de Callosa, La Campaneta, Corrientes Altas and Medias, Molins, La Murada, the parish of La Matanza, San Bartolomé, Torremendo, and multiple points in Orihuela Costa.
A key feature of the new system is the integration of license plate recognition and context cameras. These technologies will enable the police to track vehicles involved in infractions or crimes, o ering detailed traceability and the ability to determine which vehicles were present at a speci c location and time. This will signi cantly speed up investigations and serve as a powerful deterrent.
The project also includes the installation of a video wall and advanced control center at the Local Police headquarters, along with
servers, secure ber optic connectivity, and smart management software. Real-time monitoring and secure data storage are central components of the system’s design.
The contract outlines a sixmonth implementation period and includes a one-year warranty with full technical support, equipment replacement, and maintenance at no extra cost to the City Council.
Councilor for Citizen Security, Mónica Pastor, emphasized that Orihuela’s urban center is not excluded but already has operational surveillance infrastructure. Future phases of the project will extend coverage based on priority and technical assessments, ensuring a city-wide security network.

Man arrested for secretly recording women in Torrevieja gym changing room
The Civil Guard has arrested a 30-year-old man in Torrevieja for allegedly recording women without consent inside the locker room of a local sports center. He is being investigated for two crimes against privacy, honor, and personal image.
The case began on May 28, when a woman reported to the Civil Guard’s Main Post in Torrevieja that she had seen a hand holding a mobile phone above the shower area while
she was bathing in the women’s locker room. She immediately shouted at the individual, who ed the scene. The victim then alerted another woman in the locker room, and both informed gym sta .
A few days later, a second woman came forward with a similar complaint, also involving the same facility.
In response, the Civil Guard launched an investigation with the full cooperation of the gym’s management.
The collaboration allowed o cers access to technical resources and security systems that helped identify the suspect.
Thanks to the swift action of authorities, the suspect was quickly located and arrested. Two mobile phones believed to have been used to record the footage were seized and handed over to the court for forensic analysis. This rapid response was critical in preventing the possible distribution of the recordings and safeguarding the victims’ privacy.
The detainee, a Spanish national, was brought before Torrevieja Investigating Court No. 3 and later released. The Civil Guard urges the public to report any similar incidents immediately to protect victims and prevent further harm.
Torrevieja prepares for the 71st International Habaneras and Polyphony choral competition
Torrevieja is set to host the 71st edition of its renowned International Habaneras and Polyphony Choral Competition from July 20 to 26 at the Municipal Theater. Mayor Eduardo Dolón and Councilor for Culture Antonio Quesada o cially presented the event, which will bring together nearly 700 choir members from around the world.
A total of 17 choral groups will perform during the week, with nine of them participating in the competitive phase. These choirs come from Europe, America, and Asia, re ecting the global prestige and appeal of the competition.
In keeping with tradition, each choir will open their performance with the obligatory piece “Torrevieja es así,” composed by Mario Bustillo with lyrics by Mari Paz Andréu. Both artists, deeply connected to the spirit of the Habaneras, passed away just
over a year ago. To honor their memory, the competition’s Board of Trustees and technical committee selected their work as this year’s required piece.
To ensure widespread access to the event, a large screen will be installed on Paseo Vista Alegre for free public viewing of each gala. Additionally, the performances will be livestreamed online and broadcast in real time by local television station TVT.
The nal gala on Saturday, July 26, will be aired live by regional broadcaster À Punt, thanks to an agreement
being nalized between the Municipal Board of Trustees and the channel.
For over 40 years, RTVE has supported the event and will once again produce a special highlights program for national and international broadcast. The air date and time will be con rmed soon.
This beloved cultural event continues to be one of Torrevieja’s most important and internationally recognized traditions, celebrating music, heritage, and community on a grand scale.
Cala Cerrada beach was temporarily closed due to water pollution
The Orihuela City Council’s Beaches Department was temporarily closed Cala Cerrada beach in La Zenia following the detection of water pollution, according to the Regional Ministry’s Bathing Water Quality Control Program.
A report issued by the Directorate General of Water on July 1, 2025, indicated the presence of “residual contamination” in water samples collected from the beach. In response, the Department has taken immediate preventive action to protect public health by restricting access to the beach.
Warning signs have been placed around the area, advising swimmers not to enter the water until further notice. The closure is a temporary and precautionary measure while further analyses are conducted to con rm the source of the contamination and ensure that it has
been fully resolved.
Water quality checks are performed weekly by the Ministry of Environment and Water, enabling quick response to emerging issues and minimizing potential risks to beachgoers. These routine tests are a key part of the region’s broader public health and environmental protection e orts.
Meanwhile, the Beaches Department is working closely with technical teams
from the Directorate General of Water to address the issue as swiftly as possible. Their objective is to restore the beach’s water quality and reopen Cala Cerrada under safe and healthy conditions.
O cials have emphasized their commitment to ensuring that the beach meets all safety standards before allowing public access again. Updates will be provided as new water quality results become available.
AI-driven traffic lights coming to Punta Prima roundabout on N-332
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a €409,369.81 contract (VAT included) to implement an arti cial intelligence-based tra c light control system at the Punta Prima roundabout on the N-332 highway in Orihuela Costa.
This innovative project introduces a smart tra c light system powered by machine learning and reinforcement learning. According to the ministry, the system will enable tra c signals to “learn” in real time, adapting to road conditions and user behavior based on collected data and ongoing performance.
The advanced system combines arti cial intelligence, neural networks, big data, tra c modeling, and traditional tra c engineering techniques. The goal is to improve tra c ow e ciency and safety while reducing travel time and environmental impact. By integrating both modern and conventional analytical methods, the system will continuously analyze and optimize road usage for all types of users.
A key aspect of the project is its user-centric approach. Unlike traditional models that prioritize infrastructure alone, this AI system places drivers and passengers at the core of its decision-making process, aiming to enhance safety, comfort, and travel e ciency. It marks a shift toward more responsive and adaptive tra c management strategies.
The initiative is funded through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, with a focus on sustainability, energy e ciency, and
noise reduction. Once operational, the smart tra c light system is expected to signi cantly ease congestion at one of Orihuela Costa’s busiest intersections, contributing to a smoother and safer driving experience.
Implementation of this cutting-edge solution underscores the ministry’s commitment to integrating digital innovation into transportation infrastructure while aligning with broader environmental and urban mobility goals.
Guardamar police and Civil Guard arrest four in burglary and vehicle theft operations
The Guardamar del Segura Local Police, in coordination with the Civil Guard, have carried out multiple arrests in recent hours related to home burglaries and vehicle theft in the area.
In one operation, swift action and effective communication between both forces led to the arrest of two individuals suspected of breaking into a home in Guardamar. Authorities successfully recovered the stolen
items, which have since been returned to their rightful owners.
In a separate incident, two men were apprehended in the El Raso residential area, where police recovered a stolen vehicle linked to a series of burglaries. The suspects were reportedly using the car to carry out thefts in Guardamar and nearby towns. Upon noticing police surveillance, they attempted to flee but were soon caught and detained.
The suspects have been charged with domestic burglary and motor vehicle theft and have been brought before the courts to face legal proceedings. These coordinated actions highlight the effectiveness of local law enforcement efforts in addressing crime swiftly and efficiently. The Local Police and Civil Guard continue to strengthen their joint operations to maintain safety and security for residents across the municipality.

“Are dashcams legal in Spain”?
Yes, dashcams are legal in Spain, but there are some important rules and considerations you need to be aware of, primarily concerning data protection and safe driving practices:
1. Data Protection (GDPR and Spanish LOPDGDD): Private Use Only: The most crucial point is that dashcam footage is generally for private or domestic use only. This means you cannot publicly share footage (e.g., on social media, WhatsApp, or other public platforms) that contains
identi able personal data like faces or license plates without the explicit consent of the individuals involved.
• Evidence in Cases: While you can use footage as evidence for your insurance company or in court cases (like for accidents), its admissibility will depend on the judge’s discretion and whether it complies with privacy laws.
• Continuous Recording/ Surveillance: Using a dashcam for continuous surveillance of public spaces or leaving it recording while parked for extended periods (especially overnight), can be considered a violation of data protection laws. Footage should generally be limited to speci c events.
• No Filming Police/ Emergency Personnel: Unless it’s part of an o cial report, lming police or emergency personnel is prohibited.
2. Driving Safety:
• No Obstruction of View: The dashcam must be mounted securely and in a position that does not obstruct the driver’s eld of vision. Recommended placement is often behind the rearview mirror. Improper placement can lead to an €80 ne.
• Hands-O Rule: You are not allowed to operate or manipulate the dashcam while driving, including when stopped at tra c lights or in a tra c jam. This is treated similarly to using a mobile phone and can result in a ne of up to €200 and a deduction of three license points. In summary:
You can legally own and install a dashcam in Spain to record your journeys. It can be a useful tool for personal protection in case of incidents or accidents. However, be extremely mindful of the strict data protection laws.

Aemet predicts one of the hottest summers on record
As global temperatures continue to rise, European cities are experiencing extreme heat for far longer than the traditional summer months. Some cities in Europe now endure high temperatures for up to ve months a year, a new study by Climate Resilience for All claims.
The analysis, led by the NGO’s meteorological team, examined temperature data from 2019 to 2023 across 85 cities worldwide. It focused on the rst and last days that each city reached 32°C, a threshold for extreme heat that poses serious health and environmental risks.
They found that socalled ‘heat seasons’ are no longer con ned to the recognised summer months and are now much longer in duration. On average, the team, led by climate scientist Dr Larry Kalkstein, say that
heat seasons last for 214 days across the cities they looked at.
This comes as Aemet issued a clear warning about what lies ahead after the month of June has ‘broken records’.
“There is a high probability that summer temperatures will clearly be above normal and it is not out of the question that this season will be one of the hottest on record”, said a spokesman for the state meteorological Agency.
In Aemet’s monthly forecast for the whole month of July, it highlights that “the week from 7th to 13th July will be warmer than normal in practically the whole of the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands, with values more typical of the season in the Canary Islands. Rainfall will be scarce in the western half of the country, while some
showers could occur in the Mediterranean area, without ruling them out in parts of the Balearic Islands”.
The situation will remain similar for the next two weeks, according to the weather forecast “with temperatures above the normal average for the season and, therefore, intense heat in most of the Spanish mainland and the Balearic archipelago. In the Canary Islands, in principle, they will remain at normal levels for this time of year. It is most likely to be a period with very little rainfall in large areas of the southern half, but rainfall, mostly associated with storms, cannot be ruled out in the rest of the mainland and the Balearic Islands”.
The waters of the western Mediterranean may exceed 26C and even reach 28 to 30 degrees at times, according to Aemet on social media.
Spain experiences a notable decline in unemployment
In May, Spain experienced a notable decline in unemployment, with the number of jobless individuals dropping by 57,835. This brought the total number of unemployed people to 2.45 million, marking the rst time since 2008 that unemployment has fallen below 2.5 million.
The gures are based on o cial government social security data and re ect a signi cant improvement in the country’s labor market.
This development is a key milestone, as it represents the lowest unemployment gure Spain has seen in nearly 17 years. However, despite the progress, the country still faces considerable challenges. Spain continues to hold the highest unemployment rate in the European Union—about twice the EU average—highlighting persistent structural issues in its labor market.
Much of the recent improvement can be attributed to seasonal employment trends. As is
typical during this time of year, the lead-up to summer brought a surge in hiring across tourism, hospitality, and related industries. These sectors traditionally rely on temporary sta to meet increased demand during the warmer months, which temporarily boosts employment gures.
While the drop in unemployment is encouraging, experts caution that these gains may not be sustained once the summer season ends. Long-
term solutions, such as labor market reforms and support for year-round job creation, are still needed to ensure lasting employment stability.
In summary, Spain’s unemployment fell to its lowest level since the global nancial crisis, largely driven by seasonal hiring. While this signals short-term economic momentum, it also underscores the need for structural reforms to address the country’s persistently high jobless rate.

You hear of these things happening; long lost relatives passing away and leaving an inheritance. It is your good fortune that you are in line for this legacy. Check with a solicitor first, but I suspect the inheritance is yours by right, otherwise the firm who wrote to you would have otherwise informed your mother that she was next of kin. As the legitimate heir, you would have no obligation, nor are you duty-bound to share your inheritance with anyone else... Your mother, you tell me, is trying to bully you into handing over the legacy. If you need to stand firm, you could advise your mother to seek legal advice and go ahead with proceedings if she has a case; however, you are operating within the law, and you will not be sharing your windfall with anyone else.

My father died five years ago, and I am my Uncle’s sole heir; there are no other beneficiaries. I was blown away; I don’t know what the Estate is worth, but I was informed that my Uncle died intestate. He had apparently never married and had no children. Now to my problem.... my mother, who has always been a difficult person to deal with, had also heard from the firm, who wrote to her when trying to track me down; and now, she wants the inheritance. Summer Hair, Don’t Care? Think Again – Expert Tips from Indiana’s Hair and Lash Boutique
As temperatures climb and the sun blazes brighter, so do our worries about frizz, dryness, and at, lifeless locks. But don’t sweat it—literally. We’ve turned to the experts at Indiana’s Hair and Lash Boutique to uncover the hottest tips to keep your hair healthy, glossy, and summer-ready all season long.
1. Hydration Is Your Best Friend
Just like your skin, your hair needs hydration—especially under the sun’s harsh rays. “Use a moisturising shampoo and deep conditioner weekly,” advises
Indiana,

2. Protect Your Strands From the Sun
Think of UV rays as tiny troublemakers for your tresses. “If you wouldn’t go out without SPF on your skin, why neglect your hair?” Indiana says. She recommends wearing a widebrimmed hat or applying a UV protection spray before heading outdoors.
3. Skip the Heat—Embrace Air-Drying
“Summer is the perfect time to give your hot tools a break,” says Indiana. Instead of blow-drying
Finding the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming, but understanding a few key factors makes it easier to protect your skin and health. Sunscreens reduce your risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer by shielding your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Start with SPF 30 or Higher:
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends sunscreens with at least SPF 30, which blocks 97% of UVB rays. Higher SPFs can o er added protection, but no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after sweating or swimming.
Choose Broad-Spectrum Protection:
Look for sunscreens labeled “broad-spectrum,” meaning they guard against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. UVA rays can penetrate windows and contribute to skin aging and hyperpigmentation, while UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn.
Consider Formula and Skin Type:
Sunscreens come in lotions, creams, gels, sprays, and sticks. Creams may suit dry skin, gels work well for oily skin, and sticks are ideal for areas like around the eyes. People with sensitive or acne-prone skin may bene t from mineral (physical) sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
Check Ingredients and Environmental Impact:
Some chemical ingredients, like oxybenzone and octinoxate, can irritate skin or harm marine life. If you’re concerned, opt for “reef-safe” or mineral-based sunscreens. Always test new products on a small patch of skin rst.
Make Sunscreen a Daily Habit: Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure, even on cloudy days. Use about one ounce (a shot glass full) and cover all exposed areas. Don’t forget your ears, neck, and feet. Daily use is key—UV rays can still a ect your skin through clouds and windows.
Choose a sunscreen that ts your skin type, lifestyle, and values— and use it consistently.
or straightening, towel-dry gently and let your natural texture shine. Try braiding damp hair for soft waves without the heat damage.
4. Tame the Frizz with a Silk Scarf or Bonnet
Humidity and frizz go hand in hand. “Wrap your hair in a silk scarf at night, or sleep on a silk pillowcase,” Indiana suggests. “It reduces friction, retains moisture, and keeps your style fresher for longer.”
5. Trim Those Ends
“Split ends don’t take a summer holiday,” Indiana reminds us. Regular trims—every 6 to 8 weeks—will keep your hair looking fresh and full, even in the hottest weather.
6. Keep It Simple with Protective Styles
Braids, buns, and twists are not only chic but also practical.
“Protective styles prevent breakage and cut down on daily styling,” says Indiana. “Plus, they’re perfect for summer events—from beach days to weddings.”
7. Don’t Forget Your Scalp
“A healthy scalp equals healthy hair,” Indiana explains. Use a
gentle exfoliating scrub once a week to remove sweat and product buildup. Follow up with a lightweight, nourishing oil to soothe and condition.
Look Fab, Feel Even Better
With a bit of care—and a lot of love—your hair can thrive all summer long. For a personalised consultation, treatments, or styling session, visit Indiana’s Hair and Lash Boutique, where beauty meets expertise.

o otic surger for prostate cancer hat Is radical prostatectom and how does the a inci
Learn what radical prostatectomy involves, when it’s indicated, and how the Da Vinci robotic system enhances surgical precision, reduces complications, and speeds up recovery.
Radical prostatectomy is one of the most e ective procedures for treating localized prostate cancer. It involves the complete removal of the prostate gland and, usually, the seminal vesicles. This surgery has a curative intent and is mainly recommended for patients with early-stage prostate cancer, when the tumor is still con ned within the prostate and hasn’t spread to other parts of the body.
In recent years, the introduction of robot-assisted surgery using the Da Vinci system has revolutionized this procedure [1], enabling unprecedented surgical precision and safety. This type of surgery is recommended for clinical stages T1 and T2, aiming to completely remove the tumor before it spreads. According to specialists, it’s especially suitable for men in good general health, with a life expectancy long enough to bene t from curative treatment.
“The main goal of radical prostatectomy is to eliminate the cancer de nitively before it spreads,” says Dr. Manuel Ruibal, robotic urologic surgeon at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital.
From Open Surgery to the Da Vinci Robot: A Surgical Evolution Traditionally, radical prostatectomy was performed via open surgery, which required a large incision in the lower abdomen and provided only a limited direct view of the surgical eld. The emergence of laparoscopic techniques marked a step forward toward less invasive interventions.
However, the true game changer was the introduction of the Da Vinci robotic system, which combines the best of both approaches with unmatched surgical precision.
The Da Vinci robot allows the surgeon to operate from a console, controlling robotic arms that perform movements with millimetric precision. This eliminates human tremors and o ers a highde nition, three-dimensional view of the surgical eld.
Key Di erences Between Traditional and Robotic Prostatectomy
The Da Vinci robotic system marks a signi cant advancement over traditional open surgery. While open surgery involves larger incisions and limited vision, robotic surgery uses small incisions and o ers enhanced precision and visibility.
According to Dr. Ruibal, “With the Da Vinci robot, we eliminate human tremors and achieve greater precision. This is key to preserving functions like urinary continence and sexual function.”
1. Type of incision
* Traditional surgery: Requires large incisions, which can lead to greater tissue damage and higher risk of complications.
* Da Vinci robotic surgery: Uses small laparoscopic incisions, signi cantly reducing tissue trauma and improving recovery.
2. Precision
* Traditional surgery: Precision depends on the surgeon’s manual skill and can be a ected by tremors or fatigue.
* Robotic surgery: O ers greater stability and re ned movements, enabling enhanced surgical accuracy.
3. Vision of the surgical eld
* Traditional surgery: Typically provides a two-dimensional view, making depth perception more di cult.
* Robotic surgery: O ers a three-dimensional, high-de nition view, vastly improving visualization.
4. Recovery time
* Traditional surgery: Recovery tends to be slower due to greater invasiveness, pain, and longer hospital stays.
* Robotic surgery: Recovery is faster, with less bleeding and trauma.
5. Preservation of key structures
* Traditional surgery: Makes it harder to preserve delicate nerves and vessels due to limited precision.
* Robotic surgery: Enhances the preservation of critical structures, reducing postoperative side e ects. Despite its futuristic appearance, the Da Vinci robot does not operate autonomously. The surgeon controls all movements from an ergonomic console in the operating room. Through small incisions, a camera and various surgical instruments are inserted. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into highly precise robotic actions in real time.
“The di erence isn’t just in the technology—it’s in how we use it. The experience of the surgical team is crucial to fully harness the advantages of the Da Vinci system,” adds Dr. Ruibal.
Who Can Bene t from Robotic Prostatectomy?
Robotic-assisted prostatectomy is primarily indicated for patients with localized prostate cancer in its early stages. Patients must also be in good overall health to undergo major surgery and bene t from the longterm curative potential.
In some cases, the technique can also be considered for locally advanced cancer, provided that clinical conditions and a multidisciplinary team support the indication. This technique is especially bene cial for younger, physically active patients, as it helps preserve functions such as continence and sexual activity.
One of the most signi cant advantages is reduced intraoperative bleeding, due to the robot’s precision and minimal tissue trauma. This lowers the risk of complications and speeds up recovery. Dr. Ruibal
explains, “Patients notice the di erence from day one. They walk sooner, eat sooner, and go home with more independence—something unthinkable with traditional surgery.”
Other bene ts include:
* Less postoperative pain, reducing the need for pain medication.
* Shorter hospital stay, usually one or two nights.
* Smaller incisions, with lower infection risk and better cosmetic results.
* Faster return to daily and professional activities.
Although concerns like erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence persist, these side e ects have signi cantly decreased thanks to the Da Vinci system. The robot’s ability to identify and protect nerves responsible for these functions leads to faster and better functional recovery, especially in younger patients. Still, recovery can vary and may require personalized rehabilitation.
In terms of cancer control, studies con rm that robotic surgery o ers
the same oncological outcomes as open surgery. The determining factor is the surgeon’s skill and experience, rather than the technique itself.
“The key lies in proper patient selection, re ned technique, and detailed planning. Technology is a powerful tool, but it’s the surgeon who operates,” emphasizes the specialist.
At Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system has been successfully implemented for over two years. Today, the hospital is the only private center in Alicante province with this cutting-edge technology for prostate cancer treatment.
Thanks to this system, the hospital has become a benchmark in minimally invasive urologic surgery, o ering patients a safer, more e ective approach with better functional outcomes. “Our commitment is clear: to o er the best in medicine through innovation. Robotic surgery is now one of our main tools in the ght against cancer,” concludes the hospital’s medical team.
A quarter of a century of innovation, two and a half decades of cutting-edge technology, five lustrums of personalized attention, and above all, 25 years of dedication to service.
pain s electrified vehicle mar et soars in
first half of 5
Spain’s market for electrified vehicles—comprising fully electric and plug-in hybrids—is experiencing record-breaking growth in the first six months of 2025. According to data from Aedive and Ganvam, EV adoption is rapidly accelerating and gaining a solid foothold in the automotive industry.
In June alone, 21% of all new passenger car registrations were electrified models. If current trends continue, over 200,000 electric vehicles are expected to be registered by the end of the year. However, both associations emphasize that greater fiscal support, especially for fleet electrification, could double
these numbers and significantly speed up the transition to sustainable mobility.
Total registrations of fully electric vehicles—including passenger cars, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles—have surged by 79.1% so far in 2025, reaching 115,710 units. That figure is already close to the total for all of 2024 (133,699 units).
In June alone, sales jumped by 129.6%, with 28,120 units sold.
Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose 71.5% yearto-date, totaling 57,060 units.
June saw a particularly strong performance with a 104% increase to 13,876 units. Fully
electric passenger cars led this growth, increasing 101.7% in June alone, reaching 11,461 units— driven in part by energy saving certificate programs, Moves Plan incentives, and tax relief.
Sales of electric two-wheelers also grew significantly. Zeroemission motorcycles rose 59.3% in June (3,297 units YTD), while electric mopeds saw 59.8% June growth but declined slightly overall in 2025 (-5.5%).
Electric vans posted an impressive 240% jump in June (1,288 units), and 61.3% growth year-to-date. Plug-in hybrids saw a 161.5% surge in June, totaling 14,244 units, with a first-half increase of 87.1% (58,650 units).
ar insurance prices surge 1 in pain O urges drivers to review policies and compare offers
Motorists across Spain are facing a fresh financial strain as the cost of car insurance has surged by 10% over the past year. The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has sounded the alarm, citing data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE). The consumer watchdog has described the increase as “surprising and difficult to justify,” particularly given the broader economic context.
In response, the OCU is encouraging drivers to take proactive steps by thoroughly reviewing their current car insurance policies and exploring other options in the market. The organisation highlights that by comparing offers from different insurers, policyholders could potentially save up to €500 annually.
The OCU’s analysis reveals dramatic price disparities for similar coverage. For instance, comprehensive insurance for the same vehicle and driver profile can range from €550 to a staggering €2,500. Meanwhile, comprehensive insurance with excess—a type of coverage that lowers the premium in exchange
for the driver covering part of the claim—varies from €300 to €900. Extended third-party cover, which includes extra protections like window damage or fire, ranges from €250 to €500.
These price gaps underscore the importance of shopping around rather than automatically renewing existing policies. According to the OCU, many drivers may be unknowingly overpaying, especially if they haven’t re-evaluated their needs or compared prices in recent years.
Particular attention is also being given to older vehicles. With the average age of cars in Spain now at 14.5 years, the OCU recommends third-party insurance with extended coverage for these vehicles. This type of policy can offer essential protection—such as coverage for theft, fire, or animal collisions—without the higher premiums of full coverage plans.
For those still wanting broader protection but hoping to reduce their premium, comprehensive insurance with excess offers a balanced alternative.
This model allows drivers to pay less upfront while accepting a limited financial risk in the event of a claim.
With inflation affecting multiple sectors and household budgets under pressure, the OCU stresses that adapting insurance policies to each driver’s specific needs is more important than ever. This includes assessing the value and usage of the vehicle, driving habits, and the actual risks faced on the road.
The consumer association is urging motorists to use online comparison tools and request personalized quotes from various companies before committing to or renewing a policy. In doing so, drivers can avoid unnecessary expenses and ensure they are adequately covered without paying a premium for services they don’t need.
In conclusion, with car insurance premiums on the rise in Spain, the OCU’s message is clear: don’t accept rate hikes blindly. Take the time to compare, tailor your coverage, and potentially save hundreds of euros each year.

complex event over just ve days.
The sentiment was echoed by Joachim Kellermeier, Secretary General of the European Lifesaving Federation, who commended Spain for the professionalism and e ciency of the event’s execution.
Torrevieja’s Mayor, José Manuel Dolón García, underscored the deeper value of the competition, describing it as “a sport with such a commendable aim—to save lives.”
Throughout the week, the championships o er a compelling mix of simulated rescues, endurance trials, and technical challenges that re ect reallife emergency conditions. These events not only celebrate athletic excellence but also reinforce the importance of lifesaving as a vital public service.
Lifesaving, as a sport, stands apart in its mission. It combines elite-level physical training with life-preserving skills, pushing athletes to compete with urgency and purpose. As calls for Olympic recognition intensify, the sport’s global relevance continues to grow, buoyed by passionate athletes and supporters who view competition as a means to promote safety, community responsibility, and preparedness.
In Torrevieja, the energy and spirit of the European Lifesaving Championships serve as a powerful reminder: this is not just a competition—it is a movement. With increasing international support, lifesaving is poised to rise further on the global sporting stage, driven by a mission far greater than medals alone.

The XXVI edition of the Trofeo SM La Reina, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, concluded with a display of world-class sailing as Fala Pouco, skippered by José Ballester and representing CN Torrevieja, clinched the overall championship. With this commanding performance, Fala Pouco takes its place at the top of the Mediterranean sailing circuit, succeeding last year’s winner, Lisa R, with distinction.
In the fiercely contested ORC3 – Energy Nautic Services category, Fala Pouco’s Dufour 40 DK yacht stood out with a consistent series of results, including three victories, two second-place finishes, and one sixth-place result. This impressive run secured both the class and overall titles, solidifying the team’s reputation as one of the Mediterranean’s premier sailing crews.
The final day of the regatta challenged teams with shifting wind conditions— beginning with a gentle 6-knot breeze from 90º, later veering to 125º. Navigating these tactical demands across Valencia’s
renowned sailing areas near El Saler, Pinedo, and El Perelló required exceptional strategy and seamanship.
The event hosted over 100 yachts from 11 countries and brought together more than 1,000 sailors, turning the waters off Valencia into a showcase of international skill and camaraderie.
The regatta featured a starstudded fleet, including Olympic champions, America’s Cup veterans, and Volvo Ocean Race sailors, underlining its global significance on the ORC circuit. Prestigious clubs and owners from across Europe and Latin America took part, adding to the competitive depth of the event.
Among the standout performers across the classes were Vudu (ORC0) with a final-day double win, Selene Alifax (ORC1) delivering a strong comeback, and Katara (ORC2) sealing their podium position with two closing victories. In the J80 class, Les Roches / Crisandkim Travel dominated with multiple wins, while Davincy in the ORC Open category achieved a flawless record.
The Promotion class was topped by Staxx, who
closed the series with another first-place finish.
The Trofeo SM La Reina –Copa Almirante Marcial Sánchez-Barcaíztegui is not only a premier sailing competition but also a tribute to Spain’s maritime heritage. Among the many highlights was the 161-mile offshore race, won by Pampero of Down, which tested the endurance and navigational prowess of its participants.
Fala Pouco’s triumph in 2025 marks a milestone in Mediterranean regatta history, reflecting a mastery of wind, resilience under pressure, and strategic brilliance. In Valencia, where the sea demands both courage and finesse, Fala Pouco rose to the challenge and etched its name into sailing legend.
With international prestige, elite competition, and deeprooted tradition, the Trofeo SM La Reina continues to be a beacon of excellence in the world of competitive sailing. Fala Pouco’s remarkable performance sets a high standard for the future, inspiring sailors and fans as anticipation builds for the next edition.
