Guardamar demands healthcare funding in line with population
The Guardamar del Segura Cultural Centre hosted an event organised by the Torrevieja Department of Health’s Platform for Quality Public Healthcare. The event brought together nearly 250
people, including regional representatives from the PP, PSPV-PSOE, and Compromís parties, as well as members of the Valencian Parliament’s Health Commission.
The objective of the meeting
was to analyse the current state of the department’s healthcare system and demand funding adjusted to the actual population size, taking into account both census and seasonal growth. The platform demanded that regional healthcare budgets be brought in line with the average for the Valencian Community.
During the event, it was highlighted that the region has experienced significant population growth. According to the data presented, the population in the department’s coastal municipalities has increased from 90,000 to 215,000 since 2000. This increase has been driven by residential tourism, especially in Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja, where up to 45% of the land has been developed.
However, this growth has not been accompanied by
a proportional expansion of public services, such as education or healthcare, which has directly affected the quality of care. The platform indicated that per capita healthcare expenditure in the Department of Torrevieja was €1,081 in 2024, compared to the regional average of €1,586, representing a difference of €505 per inhabitant.
Furthermore, they noted
that investment in healthcare infrastructure has been significantly reduced. In primary care, the initial forecast for 2024-2025 was €5,039,000, but actual expenditure is estimated at €435,000. In specialised care, of the €1.1 million planned for hospital expansion in 2024, no investment has been made, and it has been postponed to 2025.
The platform denounced that this lack of resources translates into a structural underfunding that affects staffing and equipment. For example, the doctor-topatient ratio in family medicine is 1,822, one of the highest in the Valencian Community. It was also noted that the Torrevieja hospital has 290 beds, well below the regional average of 387.
Nearly 600 extra officers deployed for summer security boost
The Spanish government is set to reinforce security measures across the Valencian Community this summer with the deployment of an additional 596 Guardia Civil and Policia Nacional officers. This initiative is part of the annual “Operation Verano,” a summer security campaign running from July 1st to August 31st. In total, around 7,300 officers will be stationed throughout the region during this period to support public safety efforts.
The campaign is a coordinated effort aimed at safeguarding one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations during the peak holiday season. Pilar Bernabé, the government delegate to the Valencian Community, stressed the significance of the operation, noting that summer is a vital period for tourism. “Our goal is to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for both residents and visitors by strengthening public security,” she said.
Operation Verano will prioritize increased surveillance in areas with high tourist activity and traffic. Key focus points include
major transportation hubs such as train stations, airports, ports, and highways, as well as public spaces like beaches, campsites, and hotels. Extra personnel will also be assigned to monitor large gatherings, including local fiestas and music festivals, to ensure crowd safety and prevent potential disruptions.
A particular emphasis will be placed on deterring and responding to both traditional crime and cybercrime. Bernabé highlighted the government’s intention to reduce risk and improve response times for victims, underscoring the need for swift, efficient police presence in densely populated tourist zones.
In addition to security reinforcements, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), in collaboration with the Interior Ministry, will be implementing seasonal road safety campaigns. These initiatives aim to address the seasonal spike in traffic-related incidents, especially during busy travel periods. Campaigns will target risky driving behaviours such as excessive speeding and
operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Special traffic control operations are scheduled for weekends and holiday periods, which historically see the highest traffic volumes. These measures are designed to maintain order on the roads and reduce accident rates.
Overall, the comprehensive summer strategy reflects the government’s proactive approach to maintaining safety and order during the tourist season. By reinforcing law enforcement presence and promoting responsible driving, the campaign seeks to create a secure environment for everyone spending the summer in the Valencian Community.
Spain, UK and EU agree historic Gibraltar deal
The European Union has announced that it has reached an agreement with the United Kingdom and Spain regarding the status of Gibraltar, marking the end of five years of complex negotiations that followed Brexit.
The agreement will ensure the continued movement of people and goods across the border between Gibraltar and Spain and is seen as part of the UK’s broader effort to ‘reset’ its relations with the EU.
Although the UK formally exited the EU in 2020, the specific terms concerning Gibraltar, a strategically significant British military base situated at the entrance to the Mediterranean, had remained unresolved. Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in 1713, but Spain has maintained its sovereignty claim ever since. Relations concerning the Rock, as it is popularly referred to in English, have had their ups and downs over the centuries. In Britain’s 2016 Brexit referendum, 96% of voters in Gibraltar supported remaining in the EU. The tiny territory depends greatly on access to the EU market for its 34,000 inhabitants.
Progress in the post-Brexit talks, which involved the UK, Spain, the EU and Gibraltar, had been slow under the former Conservative government.
However, momentum picked up after the Labour Party assumed office last year.
‘A truly historic milestone: an EU-UK political agreement on the future relationship concerning Gibraltar. This benefits everyone and reinforces a new chapter in the relationship,’ said EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic on X.
Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, expressed his approval of the agreement, saying he was ‘delighted’with a deal that ensures ‘legal certainty to the people of Gibraltar, its businesses and to those across the region who rely on stability at the frontier’.
He stressed that the agreement ‘will protect future generations of British Gibraltarians and does not in any way affect our British sovereignty’.
Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, posted on X: ‘The agreement reached today by the EU Commission, Spain and the United Kingdom delegation regarding Gibraltar structures a new model of co-existence. For the well-being of the 300,000 Andalusians in Campo de Gibraltar and the 15,000 people who travel there every day.’
Albares said that Spain ‘will guarantee free movement of people and goods’, adding that Gibraltar would now be linked to Europe’s free travel zone known
as the Schengen Area with Spanish authorities controlling entry and exit.
The deal, which must be ratified by parliaments in both Spain and the UK, will remove all physical barriers, checks and controls on people and goods moving between Spain and Gibraltar, the EU said in a statement.
Entry and exit checks will now be conducted at Gibraltar’s airport and port by both UK and Spanish border officials. The arrangement is similar to that in place at Eurostar train stations in London and Paris, where both British and French officials check passports.
Individual mobility
An agreement was also reached for visas and travel permits. The UK said that half Gibraltar’s population crosses the border each day and that without an agreement, new EU entry-exit rules mean every person would have to have their passports checked.
The UK said the agreement ‘does not impact sovereignty’ and ensures ‘full operational autonomy of the UK’s military facilities in Gibraltar’.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, however, noted that Spain maintains its claim of sovereignty over Gibraltar.
Spanish PM apologises over corruption claims
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has asked for forgiveness from the public after one of his closest aides stepped down after being implicated in an ongoing corruption scandal. A police report leaked to the media on Wednesday identified party secretary Santos Cerdán as responsible for handling illegal commission payments linked to public contracts.
“I want to apologise to the citizens,” Sánchez said during a press conference hours before Santos Cerdán stepped down a secretary of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).
Sánchez said his party would undergo an external audit, but rejected opposition calls for a snap election.
“There will be no election until 2027,” he said. “Until this morning, I was convinced of Cerdán’s integrity, as there was no indication of his involvement in the case. We should not have trusted him,” Sánchez said, acknowledging that the accusations
against Cerdán were very serious.
Cerdán was considered Sánchez’s right-hand man and served as the socialist party’s secretary. A police report leaked to the media identified him as responsible for handling illegal commission payments linked to public contracts. The report contains eight audio recordings of conversations between Cerdán, former Socialist minister José Luis Ábalos and Ábalos’s former aide, Koldo García.
In the recordings, they allegedly discuss the payment of €620,000 in illegal commissions. According to the report, Cerdán was in charge of ‘managing the alleged payments’.Less than a day after those reports emerged, Cerdán announced his resignation and relinquished both his seat in Congress and his position within the Socialist Party.
“I hope to focus on my defence and prove that I have never committed any wrongdoing,” he said.
Consell rails against the government as Barcelona airport gets precedence over Alicante
There has been a new clash between the Generalitat and the regional government as the Consel has once again lashed out at the central government following the announcement of the expansion of Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, for which €3.2 billion will be allocated. This decision does not sit well with the regional government, as the future expansion of the AlicanteElche airport terminal is in its very early stages.
The Consell has slammed “the government’s abandonment” and called for “maximum urgency” to undertake the work at the Alicante airport. The head of the Department of Industry and Tourism, Marián Cano, while welcoming this investment to improve connectivity, explains that “we cannot accept that while a huge investment for Barcelona is clearly and substantially
defined, in Alicante we are still waiting for the completion of the second runway, a strategic and urgent action.”
After the first four months, Alicante-Elche Airport has set record numbers, and everything points to 2025 once again being its busiest year for passenger traffic. In this regard, the regional minister points out that the terminal “is operating above its technical capacity, with record numbers and a sustained growth trend.”
Cano insists that, according to the study by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce presented in 2024, failure to expand the Alicante terminal “could result in millions of euros in lost revenue and employment.” It is estimated that two million passengers could stop arriving each year, with an impact of €920 million in
annual tourism revenue if the second runway is not built.
In this regard, the minister points out that while other autonomous regions, such as Catalonia, are moving forward with significant investments to expand Barcelona airport, the Valencian Community is still waiting, and calls for “fair and balanced treatment based on the economic and tourism reality of our region.”
The minister has called for “actions, not promises” and boasts that the Community and Alicante “ have demonstrated their ability to attract tourists, investment and air traffic “, but, in Cano’s opinion, what is now needed is “fair, balanced and transparent planning that places our infrastructure where it deserves to be: at the level of its demand and economic potential”.
Man arrested in Elche for robbing a victim as he left a bank
National Police officers have arrested a 35-year-old man in Elche, allegedly for theft. The suspect, along with another person, used a method known as “snatching” to steal €500 from a man after leaving a bank branch.
The incident was reported after a call to the emergency service room reported that several citizens were chasing a man who had apparently committed a robbery. A citizen security patrol quickly arrived at the given address and observed several people holding a young man, who turned out to be the alleged perpetrator.
After the officers interviewed the victim, he told them that moments earlier, while leaving a bank branch, he had gone to his vehicle and, once inside, a woman knocked on his window to warn him that there were thumbtacks
behind his car. When he got out to check, he saw another man open the passenger door and steal an envelope containing 500 euros and several cards. Upon realizing what had happened, he chased after the alleged perpetrator, who fled at full speed, managing to catch him thanks to the help of passersby who had witnessed the incident.
Once arrested, officers conducted several raids on the surrounding streets in an attempt to locate the woman who had been with him, but she was not found anywhere in the vicinity. Following the police investigation, the detainee was brought before the Elche City Court of First Instance. The investigation remains open in an effort to locate the woman, as an accomplice of the detainee who distracted the victim in order to carry out the crime.
This type of crime is usually committed by groups with a clear division of tasks. One of the perpetrators monitors the victims at ATMs, bank branches, supermarkets, or shopping malls and marks them so the others can track them. In this way, the criminal group always ensures that the person being robbed is carrying cash or valuables. Then, in the vicinity of the bank, or after following the victim to a parking lot or gas station, another perpetrator drops several bills next to the victim and berates them, telling them they’re theirs and that they dropped them. When the victim bends down to pick them up, the person who tipped them off or a third party takes advantage of the situation to steal cards and valuables that the victim has left unattended in their haste to collect the bills.
Man arrested in Orihuela Costa with 400 grams of cocaine
A man has been arrested by Orihuela Local Police after being caught with 400 grams of cocaine during a vehicle stop in Orihuela Costa. The arrest occurred when officers pulled over a car with UK license plates and the driver attempted to flee the scene.
Police quickly intercepted the suspect and requested his driver’s license. He admitted he did not have it with him, prompting the officers to verify his identity through the Civil Guard database. Their checks revealed that the individual was not officially registered, raising further suspicions.
Officers proceeded to search the vehicle and discovered several bags in the trunk containing a white substance in both powder and rock form, believed to be cocaine. In addition to the drugs, authorities found a precision scale, plastic bags, and other materials typically
associated with drug packaging and distribution.
The total amount of the suspected narcotics weighed 400 grams. Given the quantity and accompanying distribution tools, police determined there was sufficient evidence to arrest the man on charges related to a crime against public health.
The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and brought
before a local court to face legal proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the individual’s involvement in drug trafficking activities.
Orihuela police emphasized the importance of routine vehicle checks in uncovering criminal activity and preventing the distribution of illegal substances in the community.
Spain fronts debate on youngsters’ access to social media
The European debate on children’s access to social media networks has begun, with three EU Member States promoting the idea of a “digital majority” or the age below which it would be forbidden to connect to such platforms.
For Spain, France and Greece, the goal is to protect minors from dangerous online content. These countries believe that the algorithms used by social networks expose the very young to addictive content that can ultimately lead to increased anxiety or depression.
“Today, in the terms and conditions of use of these platforms, there is already a minimum age of 13,” explains Clara Chappaz, the French Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Economy.
“We’ve all been children, it’s very easy to change your date of birth. And
so the current system means that, on average, children are logging on and creating accounts from the age of 7-8.”
They also argue that excessive exposure may limit the development of certain skills and impair cognitive abilities.
The EU currently has legislation in place in the form of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which tackles illegal online content such as hate speech, terrorism and child pornography.
The law has been in place for almost two years for larger platforms and search engines, and just over a year for smaller organisations.
But for industry representatives in Brussels, new legislation appears premature.
“We believe that the new rules must first be properly applied. We haven’t yet seen all the effects,” says Constantin Gissler, Managing Director of Dot Europe,
which represents online services and platforms in Brussels. “I think it’s a bit hasty at this stage to be already discussing new rules and I think it’s also very important that we take more account of the reality and implications for minors of such a ban,” he adds.
Paris, Madrid and Athens are also proposing the integration of age verification and parental control systems for devices connected to the Internet.
The European Commission is currently working on an age verification application.
Last month it published draft guidelines to protect minors, such as measures to verify the age of users or to set children’s accounts as private by default. It is also conducting investigations against TikTok, Instagram and Facebook in relation to the protection of minors.
Pest control underway in Pilar de la Horadada
The Pilar de la Horadada City Council has launched a new fumigation campaign to tackle rodents and insects across the municipality’s sewage system. The initiative, led by ACCIONA AGUA—the local water and sewage service contractor—aims to reduce infestations and improve public hygiene during the warmer months.
The campaign is scheduled in multiple phases between May and October, with specific treatments planned for general coverage, high-risk areas, and response to public alerts. A comprehensive initial phase began on June 2 and will continue through July 4, targeting the entire sewage network.
A second phase of the operation will run from July 7 to September 30. This stage focuses on reinforced treatment in known trouble spots, where recurring pest issues have
been reported in past years.
In addition to these scheduled treatments, the Department of the Environment is actively monitoring pest reports submitted by residents. From May 5 to October 30, the department will respond to community notifications and arrange extra interventions where needed.
Authorities encourage residents to report any pest-related issues by emailing the Department of the Environment at medioambiente@ pilardelahoradada.org. Timely reporting helps identify new hotspots and allows the city to respond quickly and effectively.
This annual campaign is part of the city’s broader efforts to maintain clean, safe public spaces and prevent health risks associated with pest infestations. High temperatures and increased
urban activity during summer months often lead to a rise in pest activity, making these control efforts especially important. Residents are reminded not to dispose of food waste or debris in open areas, as these actions can attract pests and complicate extermination efforts.
With consistent fumigation, targeted responses, and community cooperation, Pilar de la Horadada aims to keep its neighborhoods clean and pest-free throughout the season.
Dolores strengthens security and joins gender violence protection protocol
The Dolores City Council has taken a major step forward in improving public safety and reinforcing protection for victims of domestic and gender-based violence.
On Friday, the municipality officially established its Local Security Board and joined the national VioGén system — a protocol designed to enhance coordination between police forces and streamline victim support services.
The inaugural session of the Local Security Board was cochaired by the Government Subdelegate in Alicante, Juan Antonio Nieves, and the Mayor of Dolores, Joaquín Hernández Sáez. The meeting brought together high-level representatives from the main security bodies in the region, including the Civil Guard, National Police, and Local Police, as well as key figures from the local government.
During the session, officials assessed the current security situation in Dolores and agreed on measures to strengthen coordination among the various law enforcement agencies active in the municipality.
Mayor Hernández emphasized the importance of the new board as a tool to enhance the quality and effectiveness of local safety services. “This is a tool that will improve the service provided in this area and the coordination with the Civil Guard and Local Police,” he said.
Unified Commitment to Public Safety
One of the main goals of the board is to create a space for continuous dialogue between institutions, enabling a unified and proactive approach to preventing crime and maintaining public order. The meeting demonstrated
the unanimous commitment of all parties involved to work collaboratively in improving citizen security and fostering social harmony throughout Dolores.
Mayor Hernández and Subdelegate Nieves both praised the spirit of cooperation shown by all attendees and highlighted the value of institutional unity in addressing safety challenges. The agreement to create this board reflects a broader strategic focus on shared responsibility for community well-being.
VioGén Protocol: A Key Milestone
A central focus of the meeting was the Dolores City Council’s formal adherence to the VioGén system—Spain’s national protocol for the protection of victims of gender and domestic violence. This integration is expected to significantly enhance the municipality’s ability to respond quickly and effectively in such cases.
By joining the protocol, Dolores Local Police will be able to work more closely with the Civil Guard, National Police, and Regional Police through a shared digital platform that facilitates real-time communication, streamlined case management, and data sharing. The goal is to ensure victims receive timely and specialized protection services tailored to their individual risk levels.
“This integration improves communication, optimizes resources, and ensures a faster, more coordinated response for victims,” said Mayor Hernández.
High-Level Representation and Institutional Support
The constitutive meeting of the Local Security Board was
attended by key regional and local figures. These included Dolores Councilor Rita Flores, Chief Officer of the Dolores Local Police Carlos Navarro, the Colonel in charge of the Alicante Civil Guard, and the Chief Inspector of the Elche Regional Police, also named Carlos Navarro. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the strong support for improving local security systems.
Each representative expressed full support for the initiatives presented and pledged continued collaboration in upcoming actions and projects.
Looking Ahead: A Safer, More Resilient Community
With the formation of the Local Security Board and integration into the VioGén system, Dolores takes a definitive step toward a more coordinated and effective security structure. These developments will not only strengthen the municipality’s ability to prevent and address crime but also prioritize the protection and empowerment of vulnerable residents.
The council plans to continue developing additional safety measures, awareness campaigns, and victim support services in alignment with its broader social commitment to equality and justice.
Mayor Hernández closed the meeting by reaffirming the local government’s dedication: “We will keep working to ensure Dolores is a safe and inclusive community where everyone feels protected.”
The Dolores City Council views these advancements as part of a long-term strategy to foster a secure, cooperative environment for all its citizens.
The Orihuela City Council’s Coastal Department has completed urgent repair work on a section of the stone breakwater wall located along the seafront between La Glea Beach and Aguamarina Cove. The area lies between the residential zones of Cabo Roig and Campoamor.
The project began on Monday, June 9, and was finalized the following day, Tuesday, June 10. The quick turnaround ensured minimal disruption to public access along this popular coastal stretch.
According to Orihuela Coast Councilor Manuel Mestre, the repaired section of the wall plays a vital role in protecting the foundation of the pedestrian walkway that connects the two beaches. “This wall ensures safe passage for residents and visitors,” Mestre stated, highlighting the wall’s structural importance for the area.
The damage to the wall had been caused by the
gradual displacement of stones, largely due to natural erosion, rainwater, and irrigation runoff. These factors were threatening the overall stability of the breakwater and, by extension, the safety of the pedestrian path it supports.
To restore the structure, workers repositioned the dislodged stones to their original alignment. Mestre emphasized that the work not only ensures the security of the infrastructure but also contributes to preserving the natural appearance of the coastal landscape.
“This action guarantees both the safety of the
Seafront wall repaired between La Glea and Aguamarina
infrastructure and the preservation of the coastal environment,” he said.
The Coastal Department continues to monitor and maintain key infrastructure along the seafront, especially ahead of the busy summer season when pedestrian traffic between La Glea and Aguamarina significantly increases.
Local authorities encourage residents and visitors to report any signs of damage or instability along coastal pathways to help maintain public safety and prevent future erosion-related incidents.
Multiple arrests in Orihuela for theft, drugs, and stolen vehicles
New school and key projects announced in Almoradí News
Orihuela Local Police have arrested several individuals in recent days in connection with crimes involving property theft, drug trafficking, and outstanding arrest warrants. These actions were made possible through increased patrol activity, strategic checkpoints, and citizen cooperation.
In one case, a citizen reported a woman attempting to break into parked cars on a city street. Police quickly responded and located a woman matching the description provided. After confirmation by the witness and a routine identity check, officers discovered she had an active arrest warrant. She was immediately detained, informed of her rights, and transferred to police headquarters.
In a separate operation in the Villamartín area of Orihuela Costa, officers stopped a suspicious van during a routine traffic check. The vehicle initially tried to evade police but was successfully intercepted. Inside,
officers found two large boxes containing more than seven kilos of what appeared to be marijuana, along with a precision scale and vacuumsealing equipment—tools commonly used in drug distribution. The occupants were arrested for an alleged crime against public health.
Another notable arrest occurred in the city center, where officers stopped a luxury vehicle with foreign license plates. The car was occupied by two individuals without documentation.
A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed it had been reported stolen and flagged in international databases. Additionally, the driver did not possess a valid driver’s license.
Further investigation uncovered a car key that matched another stolen vehicle. Both suspects were arrested and handed over to the Civil Guard. All seized evidence, including the stolen vehicles and key, was placed into judicial custody.
Local authorities have emphasized the importance of public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity and thanked residents for their ongoing support. These recent arrests highlight the effectiveness of joint efforts between law enforcement and the community in maintaining safety across Orihuela.
Almoradí will open its fourth public school in time for the 2026–27 academic year, according to an announcement made by Mayor María Gómez during an interview on Radio Orihuela. The school is currently under construction and forms part of a broader initiative to improve educational infrastructure across the municipality.
Reflecting on the past two years of the current legislative term, which concludes this week, Mayor Gómez emphasized the council’s commitment to education. In addition to the new school, major renovations have been carried out at Canales y Martínez and Manuel de Torres schools. Plans are also underway to establish a third secondary school, which will accommodate 60% of the town’s vocational training programs. “With only two secondary schools, we cannot meet
the educational demand of Almoradí—especially as the town has the secondhighest number of under16s in the Valencian Community,” Gómez stated.
Beyond education, the council has also focused on environmental and infrastructure projects. Last week, Almoradí signed a new contract for urban cleaning and solid waste management. The mayor confirmed that the municipality’s new eco-park is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, offering improved recycling and waste services for residents.
Another major project nearing completion is the new wastewater treatment plant, which Mayor Gómez described as essential for the sustainable development of Almoradí and nearby towns. “This facility represents a turning point for the region’s environmental and infrastructure strategy,” she said.
Looking ahead to the remaining two years of her term, Gómez announced several upcoming initiatives, including new fire prevention infrastructure. One of the key projects will be a flood-resistant park in the Maromas Industrial Estate, aimed at strengthening local disaster readiness.
In the area of social services, the council is also preparing to launch a mental health day center for children and adolescents. This facility, developed in collaboration with the Valencian Government, will address a growing need for youth mental health support in the community.
Mayor Gómez reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to long-term, sustainable improvements that serve both current residents and future generations of Almoradí.

Rafal plans civic center and dog park in next phase of development
Rafal is set to open a new civic center and dog park within the next two years, as part of the town’s ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces and community services.
Mayor Manuel Pineda, now midway through his fourth term in office since 2011, shared the news in a recent interview with Radio Orihuela.
Another major development is the new civic center, which will serve as a recreational and support hub for teenagers aged 12 to 18. The first phase has already been completed using European funding, and the second phase will move forward thanks to the Alicante Provincial Council’s Planifica initiative. “This age group is often overlooked.
Families don’t always know where to leave their kids. The center will be a safe, supervised place where they can enjoy themselves,” said the mayor.
Progress at Midpoint of Term
Reflecting on the first half of the current legislative term, Pineda highlighted several accomplishments,
One of the most anticipated projects is the town’s first dog park, which will be located near the cemetery on the site of the old recycling center. “It’s hard to find a place in a small town that’s accessible and not too close to homes, but this spot works,” said Pineda. The park will include shaded areas with trees and a section dedicated to dog agility activities. Looking ahead, the mayor hopes to expand the space further: “We aim to acquire more land around the cemetery, which is already included in the general urban plan.”
including the opening of Rafal’s Ethnological Museum in the restored Marquis’s house. The inauguration has given new cultural importance to June 14—Rafal Day— which commemorates the town’s founding in 1636.
Other completed projects include the planting of new trees and the construction of a storm water tank to manage heavy rainfall. The town has also unveiled a Master Plan for the Municipal Sports Center to meet growing demand. “Thanks to external funding, we’re able to pursue key projects despite limited local budgets,” Pineda noted.
So far, the municipal government has achieved nearly 50% of its electoral program goals, with a target of reaching at least 85% by the end of the term.
The UK started the week with a light calendar, but activity picked up from Tuesday with the release of employment and earnings data. The latest data revealed a rise in the Claimant Count, which increased to 33.1 thousand, suggesting a modest softening in labour market conditions. Concurrently, the Average Earnings Index registered a growth rate of 5.3%, marking a slight deceleration from the previous month. This moderation in wage growth may signal easing inflationary pressures.
Rachel Reeves delivered her spending review speech on Wednesday, with significant allocations announced, including £30 billion for the NHS, £39 billion over a decade for affordable housing, and increased investment in education and defence. Investors will assess whether this fiscal expansion supports longterm growth or risks fuelling inflationary pressures.
On Thursday, the UK published its latest GDP figures. The latest figures showed a contraction of -0.3%, a sharper decline than both the previous reading of 0.2% growth and the forecast of -0.1%, signalling a potential loss of economic momentum.
EUR
The Eurozone began the week slowly due to bank holidays in France, Germany, and Switzerland. The euro remains sensitive to broader USD movements and diverging monetary policy expectations between the European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve.
The European Central Bank has maintained a cautious stance, signalling a pause in rate cuts amid ongoing uncertainty around inflation and consumer confidence – despite inflation falling below its 2% target for the first time since the cost-of-living crisis began in 2022.
However, recent data from the bloc has been mixed, with Germany’s industrial weakness continuing to weigh on sentiment and PMI data from across the economic area still lingering around or below the key 50 threshold that separates growth from contraction. Generalitat advances CV-95 widening project near Torrevieja hospital
Dramatic rescue of 71-year-old swimmer from strong currents at La Mata beach
The Generalitat Valenciana’s Department of Infrastructure has officially commissioned the drafting of plans to widen the CV-95 road segment between Los Balcones and Mar Azul, adjacent to the Torrevieja University Hospital. The technical project is expected to take about 12 months to complete and marks the start of a significant improvement initiative aimed at benefiting both motorists and pedestrians on one of the area’s busiest roads.
The project covers an 870-meter stretch of road and has been awarded to the consortium UTE CV-95 Torrevieja, which includes Icosa Ingeniería Civil and Urbanistas Ingenieros. The contract value is €132,000, including VAT, with construction expected to begin in 2026, pending funding availability. The Generalitat has allocated a budget of approximately €5 million for the project, to be spent over several years.
It is important to note that this initial phase focuses only on the portion near the hospital and excludes about 200 meters towards the La Veleta roundabout and access to the N-332 bypass. That section is part of a separate, long-delayed Ministry of Transport project, which has already passed environmental approval but awaits further progress. A key safety improvement planned nearby is the construction of a roundabout at the Mar Azul crossing, known locally as “Pirates of the Caribbean,” which currently poses a hazard for drivers. Whether this will be included in a broader public-private partnership to upgrade the entire CV-95
Currently, the CV-95 sees an average daily traffic volume of 18,000 vehicles, with congestion worsening considerably during peak times such as summer. This ongoing traffic bottleneck disrupts regular travel and creates serious challenges for emergency services, as ambulances often have to use the central median to navigate through the jam. Pedestrians face considerable risks due to the lack of a proper shoulder, forcing many to walk dangerously close to traffic while traveling between the town center, hospital, and Los Balcones. The combination of heavy vehicle flow and insufficient pedestrian infrastructure increases the likelihood of accidents in the area.
route between Torrevieja and Orihuela remains uncertain, with no definitive timeline yet.
The widening project aims to create divided carriageways separated by a central median to enhance road safety and prevent misuse by emergency vehicles. It will increase road capacity to handle future traffic growth and add pedestrian and cycling paths that connect with local routes planned by the Torrevieja City Council. Noise reduction measures near the hospital are also part of the design.
With the design work expected to take place throughout 2025, actual construction may start in 2026 and finish in 2027 or later, depending on funding and administrative processes. Local residents of Los Balcones and surrounding areas, many of whom own second homes, have long expressed concerns about traffic congestion and safety on this busy road. The project is seen as crucial for improving daily mobility, particularly for hospital access, while also providing safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists in an area with limited public transport options.
Last Tuesday afternoon, a dramatic rescue took place at La Mata Beach in Torrevieja, Alicante, when a 71-year-old man was found unconscious and drifting about 100 meters from shore in an area known for dangerous currents. Thanks to the swift response of the Civil Guard and local police, the man was saved and was later reported to be recovering under medical care.
The emergency call arrived at 17:15, alerting authorities to a possible drowning near Avenida de los Europeos. Civil Guard officers quickly positioned themselves at a vantage point and used binoculars to locate the man floating face-up amid rough sea conditions. The rescue area was notorious for its strong, unpredictable currents, making the operation extremely risky.
Without hesitation, the Civil Guard officers removed their uniforms and jumped into the water to begin the highrisk rescue. During the rescue, they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while still in the water. Their timely intervention helped the man regain consciousness before reaching the shore.
Once on land, the officers continued to stabilize the swimmer with the assistance of the SAMU medical team, who arrived shortly after and prepared him for transport to the hospital. The man was taken to Torrevieja University Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition and recovering.
The local police played a crucial role by securing the surrounding area, ensuring the safety of bystanders and protecting the equipment used by the Civil Guard. The seamless coordination between the Civil Guard, SAMU personnel, and local police demonstrated the importance of teamwork in emergency situations, especially in coastal zones prone to dangerous sea conditions. This incident highlighted the serious risks swimmers face in areas with strong currents and the vital need for vigilance and rapid response during emergencies. Authorities reminded beachgoers to always swim in designated safe areas, be aware of current warnings, avoid swimming alone, and learn basic rescue and CPR techniques. Visitors were urged to follow lifeguard instructions and respect the power of the sea to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Celebrate and honour all the Armed Forces on 28th June 2025
With the joy of brilliant sunshine, blue skies (most of the time) and beautiful surroundings here in Spain and our busy lives full of work, family and social commitments, although not intentional, it is easy for us to forget what all those ‘uniformed services’ (Armed Forces) and their families have endured and are currently enduring in order for us to experience that happy and peaceful lifestyle.
The 28th June is the day to join as a collective force to celebrate and honour all the services and their families at a Parade of various Associations and Organisations Standards, led by the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums at Capilla De Las Mil Palmeras with a service by Pastor Phil Molloy.
Although we refer to it as Armed Forces Day, it encompasses all military services along
with all civilian services, including the Guardia Civil and Policia etc; all of whom work collectively for the benefit of our future.
The Shipmates (S/M’s) of the Royal Naval
Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) are extremely proud and privileged to organise and lead the celebration and tribute to all Armed Forces.

Torrevieja to host mediterranean culinary festival by the sea 2025
From June 20 to July 4, 2025, Torrevieja will once again celebrate its rich coastal heritage with the return of the gastronomic festival “Torrevieja y el Mar.” This annual event invites residents and visitors to indulge in the essence of Mediterranean cuisine, brought to life by three of the city’s top restaurants.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean, the festival promises a unique culinary journey inspired by the sea. Each of the three participating restaurants— Luz de Mar, Club Náutico, and Las Columnas—will offer an exclusive one-day tasting menu, showcasing a single signature dish that blends traditional flavors with modern culinary techniques.
On June 20, Luz de Mar will present its creamy grilled octopus rice, a dish that captures the essence of the sea through tender
octopus and rich, melty rice. A week later, on June 27, Club Náutico will serve Mediterranean sea bass with celery root and fennel purée, a refined dish that highlights the fresh catch of the day. Finally, on July 4, Las Columnas will close the series with red mullet rice paired with seasonal vegetables from the fertile Vega Baja region, paying tribute to local produce and fishing traditions.
The event not only showcases Torrevieja’s culinary talent but also reinforces the importance of supporting local restaurants and producers. Organized in collaboration with the city’s Hospitality Association, it offers a boost to the local economy during the summer season and strengthens the city’s identity as a gastronomic destination.
Dining by the sea, guests will enjoy more than just exceptional food. The
ambiance—marked by the scent of salt air, soft coastal breezes, and panoramic views—enhances the experience and reflects the intimate connection between Torrevieja’s people and the Mediterranean.
The Jornadas Gastronómicas have become a symbol of the city’s deep-rooted relationship with the sea, blending culinary tradition with innovation. Reservations are highly recommended, as the event draws a mix of local gourmets and international visitors eager to discover the flavors of Torrevieja.
Whether you’re a dedicated foodie, a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, or simply looking for a memorable seaside meal, “Torrevieja y el Mar” offers a perfect opportunity to savor the city’s best tastes in a beautiful coastal setting.
EU backs long-delayed SpainFrance energy link
The long-stalled electricity interconnection between Spain and France is finally moving forward, with the European Investment Bank (EIB) set to sign a financing agreement “in the next few days,” according to its president, Nadia Calviño. The project, which has been pending for over a decade, is seen as critical to improving Spain’s energy security and integrating the Iberian Peninsula into the broader European grid.
Calviño, formerly Spain’s Minister of Economy and now head of the EU’s financial institution, described the cross-border link as one of the EIB’s “most important” projects.
The interconnection— running between Gatika in Spain and Cubnezais in France, mostly via a 300-kilometre submarine cable under the Bay of Biscay—will consist of two independent electricity lines, each with a capacity
of 1,000 megawatts. Once completed, the 400-kilometre infrastructure will address Spain’s status as an “energy island” and reduce its vulnerability to future blackouts, such as the one that hit Europe on 28 April— its largest in a century.
Originally designated a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission and Parliament in 2013, the interconnector has made little progress until now. Calviño stressed that the EIB’s support reflects its commitment to accelerating the EU’s green energy transition and ending reliance on fossil fuels. She noted close cooperation with the European Commission and Vice-President Teresa Ribera to develop financial tools for expanding energy networks and supporting innovative green tech companies.

Verano Joven 2025 brings big travel discounts for Torrevieja youth
Young residents of Torrevieja will have a chance to travel across Spain and parts of Europe this summer without stretching their budgets, thanks to the return of the Verano Joven program. Running from July 1 to September 30, 2025, the initiative offers major discounts on train and bus travel for people aged 18 to 30.
Organized by the Spanish Government, Verano Joven aims to promote sustainable tourism and cultural exploration. After helping over 1.4 million young travelers take more than 5 million trips in 2024, the program returns this year with an expanded €120 million budget.
To qualify, participants must have been born between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2007. They must also be Spanish nationals or legal EU residents and officially reside in Spain.
Travel options under the program are wide-ranging and affordable. Regular state bus lines and mediumdistance trains offer up to 90% discounts. High-speed
trains like AVE, Alvia, and Avlo come with a 50% discount and a maximum fare of €30. Interrail Global Passes, valid for 10 days of travel within two months, are also halfprice if purchased via Renfe. Short-distance high-speed services, including Avant trains, are covered as well.
role, Calviño emphasized the strategic importance of energy interconnection for stabilizing Europe’s power grid and strengthening resilience across borders. While she refrained from commenting on domestic banking matters such as BBVA’s takeover bid for Sabadell, she voiced strong support for a unified European capital market, including cross-border mergers.
Looking ahead, Calviño also announced a major increase in EIB financing for security and defence projects across Europe. The bank plans to more than double its spending in this sector in 2025, surpassing the €2 billion originally forecast.
With political will, EU backing, and funding now aligned, the long-delayed submarine interconnector may finally bring Spain into full energy alignment with the rest of Europe.
To benefit from the discounts, eligible individuals will need to register online once the official program announcement appears in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE). Using identification such as a DNI, NIE, or passport, travelers can verify their eligibility and receive a personal discount code. This code must be entered when purchasing tickets on participating transport company websites. The program supports both environmental and social goals—reducing emissions through public transport use while encouraging young people to explore different regions of Spain. Top travel destinations in previous years included Andalucía, Cataluña, Madrid, and the Comunidad Valenciana.
For young people in Torrevieja, Verano Joven 2025 opens the door to summer adventures that are as enriching as they are affordable. Early registration is key, so travelers are encouraged to prepare now and be ready to hit the road when July begins.
Renfe expands discount voucher use to include low-cost Avlo trains
Spain’s national rail operator Renfe has introduced a significant new upgrade to its travel voucher system. From this week, passengers holding Renfe’s discount vouchers— BonoAVE, BonoAVE Flexible, and Bono Colaborativo—can now use them to book seats on Avlo, the company’s lowcost high-speed train service.
This change means voucher holders can now reserve trips not only on the flagship AVE trains but also on Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, and Intercity trains operating along highspeed routes shared with AVE services. The move is aimed at offering greater flexibility and savings for frequent travelers while ensuring consistent access
across more service types.
According to Renfe’s official announcement, these vouchers will continue to allow passengers to book trips at a fixed rate, regardless of peak travel times or seasonal demand. Additional perks include free seat selection and cancellation with no extra charge. The pricing remains stable even on highdemand days, enhancing the value for regular users.
The terms of the voucher remain unchanged: once purchased, travelers have up to four months to make their first booking. After that initial trip, the voucher remains valid for another four months.
Even if Renfe updates the price of the voucher during
this period, unused journeys under the original purchase are honored at the original rate until the expiration date.
The inclusion of Avlo trains— which offer affordable high-speed travel between major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia— marks a significant step in Renfe’s strategy to make high-speed rail more accessible. It also reflects the growing demand for cost-effective travel options without sacrificing speed and convenience.
This expansion gives passengers a broader choice of services under one discount program and strengthens Renfe’s competitive position in the increasingly diverse highspeed rail market, where low-cost alternatives are becoming more popular.
With this enhancement, Renfe hopes to attract more regular users, offering them the freedom to choose between premium and budget highspeed services with the same booking flexibility and financial benefits.

Pilar de la Horadada fire station to open after labor dispute resolution
The permanent summer fire station in Pilar de la Horadada will finally be operational after 78 days of union pressure and negotiations between the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium and the Provincial Council. On Tuesday, both sides signed a preliminary agreement on working conditions, which was ratified yesterday by the consortium’s general assembly. This marks the end of protest measures that had left the future of fixed summer patrols in Pilar de la Horadada, Santa Pola, and Jávea uncertain.
The agreement ensures that the three planned seasonal patrol units will now be deployed, including the one in Pilar de la Horadada. These fire patrols are typically activated from mid-June to mid-September to serve areas with sharp increases in population during the summer. However, due to the delays caused by the labor dispute, this year’s rollout will
begin several days late.
Each unit will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a team of four firefighters. Their mission is to provide fast emergency response in high-demand areas and to support existing stations, including the one in Torrevieja.
The Generalitat Valenciana expressed frustration over the prolonged conflict, noting that it took nearly three months of stalled negotiations and repeated protests to secure an agreement. Meanwhile,
Rubén Ferrándiz, the PSOE council member for Pilar de la Horadada, criticized the PP-led administration for allowing the situation to deteriorate and for failing to provide earlier guarantees about the fire station’s deployment.
Despite the delay, the agreement now clears the way for better summer coverage across the province, especially in Pilar de la Horadada, where the seasonal population surge significantly increases the need for rapid fire and rescue services.

Many services that offer 2FA provide backup codes when you first set it up. These codes act as a secondary authentication method when your primary device is unavailable. If you saved these codes, you can use them to log in.
2. Access Recovery Options
Check if the service offers account recovery protocols. This may involve:
• Email verification: A reset or login link is sent to your registered email.
Security questions: Verification through pre-set questions.
3. Contact Support
If backup codes or recovery options are not available, reach out to the service’s customer support. Prepare to verify your identity by providing information such as: Account details (email address, username, etc.).
• Proof of identity (if requested).
Understanding Recovery Codes
Recovery codes are a set of unique one-time-use codes provided by a service that supports 2FA. These codes act as a backup to access your account when your primary 2FA method is unavailable. It is essential to store these codes securely.
Accessing Recovery Codes
Follow these steps to retrieve recovery codes for your accounts: Log into your account: Use your credentials to access the account for which 2FA is enabled.
• Navigate to security settings: Locate the security or privacy settings option, often found under account settings or profile management.
Find the 2FA section: Look for a tab or section labelled “Two-Factor Authentication,” “2FA,” or similar.
• View or manage recovery codes: Within the 2FA settings, there is typically an option to view, download, or regenerate recovery codes. Click this option to access them.
• Save your codes: Write down the recovery codes or save them in a secure location, such as a password manager or encrypted file. Avoid storing them in easily accessible places like plain text documents or cloud storage without encryption.

Top PSOE official resigns amid corruption scandal as Sánchez orders party audit
Santos Cerdán, a senior figure in Spain’s ruling Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), resigned and vacated his parliamentary seat following mounting corruption allegations tied to the widening “Koldo case.” Cerdán, a close ally of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, had been serving as the party’s organizational secretary and was seen as a key player in internal PSOE operations. (see main story on page 4)
The scandal centers on accusations that Cerdán played a role in facilitating a network of commission payments in exchange for awarding public construction contracts to favored companies. These allegations have emerged during investigations linked to former Transport Minister and ex-party heavyweight José Luis Ábalos, who resigned in 2021 under similar circumstances. Cerdán was appointed by Sánchez to replace Ábalos and stabilize the party at the time.
Cerdán’s departure marks a significant setback for the PSOE leadership, which has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks as the corruption probe deepens. His resignation adds fuel to growing public concern about transparency and accountability within the ruling party.
In a surprise press conference on Thursday afternoon—his first appearance in weeks— Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the scandal head-on.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Sánchez issued a public apology and announced an independent audit of party operations. He emphasized the need to restore trust in PSOE institutions and reassured Spaniards that any wrongdoing would be fully investigated.
“This is a painful moment for the party and for me personally,” Sánchez said.
“But I am determined to uphold integrity
and ensure that any abuses of power are confronted and corrected.”
Meanwhile, pressure from the opposition continues to mount. On Sunday, the conservative Partido Popular (PP) organized a large protest in Madrid, drawing thousands of demonstrators demanding greater accountability from the government. PP leaders accused Sánchez of turning a blind eye to internal corruption and called for further resignations.
With the political climate growing increasingly tense, the PSOE leadership now faces the dual challenge of managing internal fallout while attempting to reassure the public and maintain its hold on power. The coming weeks are expected to bring further developments as investigators dig deeper into the case and the party attempts to distance itself from the scandal.

New accessibility rules for ATMs in Spain take effect from June 28
Starting June 28, 2025, all newly installed ATMs in Spain must comply with major accessibility upgrades aimed at making banking services more inclusive for people with disabilities. The changes are mandated under Spanish Law 11/2023, which aligns national legislation with broader European accessibility directives.
The new regulation requires banks to ensure their ATM networks are accessible to individuals with visual, hearing, physical, or cognitive impairments. From the end of June, any new ATM machines installed must already meet the new accessibility standards. Existing ATMs will also need to be upgraded, but banks have until June 29, 2030, to complete the adaptations—provided the machine in question is less than 10 years old.
The law aims to make ATM use more autonomous and secure for people with
disabilities, eliminating the need for external assistance. To achieve this, a range of improvements must be implemented across all compliant machines.
Key changes include screens with high-contrast colors and larger, more readable fonts to assist users with low vision. Clearer, simpler language is also mandated to improve usability for those with cognitive challenges. For visually impaired users, ATMs must include voiceguided instructions and Braille-compatible keypads, along with tactile buttons.
In addition, all ATMs must be designed at a height that is accessible to people in wheelchairs or with limited mobility. Interfaces are also required to be more intuitive and userfriendly, benefiting not only users with disabilities but also elderly individuals and those unfamiliar with digital banking technology.
The reform reflects a broader push within the European Union to ensure financial services are fully inclusive. It also acknowledges Spain’s ageing population and the growing need to address digital accessibility as technology becomes more deeply integrated into everyday life.
Financial institutions are now under pressure to assess their ATM fleets and begin the process of modernization. While banks have a longer grace period for existing machines, the immediate requirements for new installations mark a significant step forward in accessibility reform.
With the June 28 deadline approaching, Spain is poised to lead in creating a more inclusive banking experience—ensuring that all users, regardless of physical or cognitive ability, can access essential financial services independently.

Health & Beauty
The man I’ve been having a relationship with, was not being totally honest with me. Normally he would take his phone with him and guard it with his life; but this time he was drunk and I decided to snoop. I had always felt like I was a secret in his life, because he wouldn’t introduce me to his family when they came over to Spain. I read messages to his daughter, and there was never any mention of me. And, messages to his ex-wife did not convince me he was separated; rather too involved for their relationship to be over; which he said it was. It wasn’t loveydovey exactly, but they talked about shared events and practical matters relating to the house, and I can’t see how he would need to be involved that way, if he had left her. He told me he had a flat of his own in Stoke, but now I suspect he stays with his wife when he goes back. I decided to test him out and said I’d like to travel
back with him the next time he went on a trip home, and suggested he introduce me to his daughter and parents. It didn’t go down well and things came to a head with him saying that he wants to keep his life with me separate; ‘what goes on in Spain; stays in Spain’, he said to me. I feel empty and unloved.
Sadly you have been lied to, and it has come as a bombshell. You tell me that you want to stay with this guy, but why would you want to stay with someone who has hoodwinked you the entire time?
You have a choice of course; you can do as he wishes and keep your relationship with him a secret from his family; or you can walk away. If you do the former it is likely this situation will eat away at you until, eventually you decide you’ve had enough. I don’t see this guy doing as you ask and revealing his relationship with you any time soon.

Morning vs. Evening Showers: What’s Right for You?
The morning vs. evening shower debate isn’t one-sizefits-all—it depends on your lifestyle, habits, and personal preferences. Both times offer unique benefits, and dermatologists say the best option varies by individual.
Morning showers can be an energizing way to start the day. They increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and help you shake off sleep. According to dermatologist Dr. Anna Andrienko, morning showers are ideal for those who sweat at night or want to feel refreshed and ready. They also help reduce puffiness, tame bedhead, and prepare your skin for shaving or makeup. However, showering only in the morning means daily grime, sunscreen, and pollutants can stay on your skin overnight, potentially clogging pores.
On the other hand, evening showers help you unwind and wash away dirt, sweat, and allergens. Dr. Anna Chacon says a warm night-
time rinse signals your brain it’s time to relax, promoting better sleep. It also helps lock in moisture if you apply skincare right after. But going to bed with wet hair may cause scalp issues, and hot showers can strip your skin’s natural oils.
Ultimately, your schedule and skin type should guide your choice. If you exercise in the morning or need a boost to start your day, go for a morning rinse. If you’re looking to relax and keep your bed clean, opt for evenings. Some may even benefit from both—just keep your skin’s health in mind.
A Natural Glow: Why Microneedling and Red Light Therapy Outshine Botox
In the quest for youthful skin, Botox has long held the spotlight — but the tide is turning. Increasingly, individuals seeking radiant complexions are turning away from injectables and embracing more natural, noninvasive alternatives. At the forefront of this movement
are microneedling and red light therapy, two treatments that are redefining modern skincare.
Microneedling works by stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms. Tiny, controlled punctures in the skin encourage collagen production, helping to reduce fine lines, acne scars, and improve overall texture. It’s not instant, but the results are
gradual, natural-looking, and long-lasting — without the frozen expressions sometimes associated with Botox.
Red light therapy, meanwhile, harnesses lowlevel wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity. The benefits? Reduced inflammation, enhanced healing, and a noticeable boost in skin tone and elasticity. It’s soothing, noninvasive, and backed by a growing body of research.
Unlike Botox, these therapies don’t mask the ageing process — they support the skin’s natural ability to repair and rejuvenate. For those wary of needles, toxins, or the idea of altering facial movement, microneedling and red light therapy offer a compelling, holistic alternative.
If you’re considering a better route to radiant skin, book a
facial at Indiana’s
and Lash
— where advanced
meets personal care. Offering both microneedling and red light therapy, it’s the perfect choice for anyone looking to enhance their glow without going under the needle.
Because beauty shouldn’t come at the cost of expression.

What Is Fibromyalgia? symptoms and treatments of an invisible illness that requires specialised
The Pain Management Unit at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital highlights the need to improve healthcare for patients living with fibromyalgia—a complex condition that demands specialized, compassionate, and individualized care. Despite its high global prevalence, fibromyalgia remains widely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed.
According to the World Health Organization, between 2% and 4% of the global population lives with fibromyalgia. In Spain alone, over one million people are affected. This syndrome is characterized by widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain, extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties—often referred to as “brain fog”—and heightened sensitivity to physical contact.
More
Than Pain: A Strong Emotional Component
Fibromyalgia causes not only physical suffering but also deeply affects emotional and social wellbeing. Diagnostic uncertainty, the invisibility of the pain, and a lack of understanding from others can lead to anxiety, depression, and even social isolation.
“At our Pain Units, we don’t just treat symptoms—we support people through their journey. We understand that someone with fibromyalgia doesn’t only need medical treatment but also to feel heard, understood, and
respected,” says Dr. Fernando Leone, pain management specialist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja.
How Is Fibromyalgia Treated?
Treatment at specialized pain units begins with a thorough evaluation of the type of pain each patient experiences— whether nociceptive, neuropathic, or mixed. This allows the medical team to develop a personalized treatment plan that combines medication, advanced interventional techniques, emotional support, and recommendations to improve sleep, mobility, and independence.
Continuous follow-up is a key part of the approach, allowing treatment to be adapted according to the patient’s clinical progress. This helps strengthen the therapeutic bond and rebuild the patient’s confidence in their body and in the professionals caring for them.
“The treatment doesn’t stop at pain relief. Fibromyalgia is a condition that disrupts every aspect of a person’s life. It affects the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and existential dimensions. Many patients go years without a clear diagnosis or effective treatment strategy. That’s why we advocate for a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach that puts the person— not just the disease—at the center. Our goal is simple: to alleviate their symptoms and restore quality of life,” Dr. Leone
explains.
A Condition with Multiple Causes and Challenging Treatment
While the exact cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, experts agree that it is a multifactorial condition. It involves abnormalities in how pain is processed by the central nervous system, neuroendocrine dysfunctions, genetic and environmental
factors, and sleep disturbances. All of this leads to an abnormal amplification of pain signals, resulting in hypersensitivity, fatigue, and general discomfort.
Treatment is particularly complex because there is no definitive cure and no single medication that can address all symptoms effectively. Commonly used drugs include antidepressants such as duloxetine, milnacipran, or amitriptyline, anticonvulsants, and neuromodulators like pregabalin and gabapentin. However, these are often insufficient or poorly tolerated.
For this reason, clinical guidelines recommend a combined approach that includes:
· Proper patient education and active listening to reduce anxiety and avoid unnecessary tests
· Supervised physical activity (e.g., tai chi, yoga, aquatic therapy)
· Cognitive behavioral therapy to address psychological aspects
· Personalized pharmacological treatment—essentially, a “tailormade suit” for each patient
Advanced Options at Pain Units
Pain Units offer therapies that are typically not available in primary care settings. Among the most advanced options are intravenous infusions of lidocaine and ketamine, particularly effective in cases of neuropathic pain and treatmentresistant fibromyalgia. These
techniques target multiple pain pathways and have been shown to significantly reduce pain intensity and improve quality of life.
In short, the care provided in these specialized units offers an effective alternative for managing a condition as complex as fibromyalgia. Patients benefit from access to a multidisciplinary team that understands the unique nature of this multifaceted syndrome and can coordinate a comprehensive treatment plan—reducing inappropriate medication use and the associated side effects.
quarter of a century of innovation, two and a half decades of cutting-edge technology, five lustrums of personalized attention, and above all, 25 years of dedication to service.

New car prices in Spain surge: A postpandemic market shift
Buying a new car in Spain has become significantly more expensive in 2025 compared to pre-pandemic times. According to data from the National Association of Motor Vehicle Dealers, Repairs and Spare Parts (Ganvam), the average price of a new vehicle at official dealerships has risen by a staggering 38.1% in the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2019. That means today’s average buyer is spending around €40,582—an increase of €11,190 over six years.
This rise is nearly double the general inflation rate during the same timeframe, illustrating how sharply car prices have outpaced broader economic trends. In just the past year, average prices jumped 9.2%, up from €37,141 to over €40,000. This rapid price escalation has had a direct effect on new vehicle registrations, which fell to 377,889 units from January to April 2025—a 13.4% decline compared to the 436,328 units sold in the same period of 2019.
strategy—there’s also a supply issue, particularly at the lower end of the market. While economic uncertainty has played a role in declining sales, the limited availability of affordable new cars has become a major obstacle for consumers.
In 2019, buyers could choose from 273 vehicle models in Spain, with 104 of them (around 38%) priced below €17,731. In 2025, the number of models on the market has risen slightly to 285. However, only 60 models (21%) are now available for less than €23,774. That’s a €6,043 increase in what’s considered the entry-level segment of the market—making it more difficult for budget-conscious buyers to find options.
Government Incentives and the Road Ahead
Despite these challenges, there are efforts underway to make electric vehicles more accessible. Fernando Miguélez, Ganvam’s general director, points to the positive impact of energy-saving certificates and brand-energy company partnerships that offer buyers discounts on electric vehicle purchases. These discounts can often be combined with Spain’s MOVES III Plan, which aims to support electric mobility and reduce transport emissions through financial incentives.
The affordability crisis extends even to Spain’s most popular car models. Back in 2019, the ten top-selling models averaged around €20,000. Now, that average has climbed to €29,645, reflecting a price increase of over €10,000. Thenpopular models like the Seat León (€21,627), Nissan Qashqai (€25,345), and Dacia Sandero (€9,640) have been replaced in the rankings by models such as the Dacia Sandero (€15,317), MG ZS (€22,558), and Seat Ibiza (€21,350). Other frequently purchased vehicles now include the Renault Captur (€25,807) and the Nissan Qashqai, whose price has ballooned to €38,275.
According to Ganvam’s brandspecific analysis, nearly all manufacturers have raised prices since 2019. The most dramatic increases are seen in Smart (+156.96%), Dacia (+83.57%), Mercedes-Benz (+61.26%), and BMW (+58%). These steep hikes are often the result of repositioning within the market or a heavier focus on electrified vehicles, which typically come at a premium due to newer technologies and battery costs.
Supply and Technology Issues Compound the Problem
Soaring prices aren’t just due to inflation or manufacturer
Technological uncertainty is another contributing factor. Car buyers today must navigate a complex landscape of petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric options, with no clear standard dominating the market. For many consumers, this creates hesitation about what type of vehicle to invest in, especially given the likelihood of future regulatory changes or incentives.
Of the 60 most affordable models in Spain in 2025, just 31 are electrified in some form. Among these, only five are fully electric vehicles, while the remaining 26 are petrolbased semi-hybrids. This highlights the significant gap in accessibility when it comes to cleaner, zero-emissions cars.
Still, the data suggests that current measures haven’t done enough to offset the significant price hikes across the board. With fewer affordable models, especially in the electric segment, and rising manufacturing costs, Spain’s auto market is becoming less accessible to average consumers.
In the coming years, much will depend on how manufacturers, policymakers, and consumers respond to these trends. Whether through increased production of lower-cost electric vehicles, expanded government subsidies, or shifts in consumer behavior, a course correction will be necessary if Spain hopes to reverse declining sales and make sustainable mobility a realistic option for all.

The Gary Beck Memorial Day at La Finca Golf
We welcomed over 50 golfers at La Finca Golf on 7 June 2025 for the 5th Memorial Day in honour of Gary Beck who sadly passed away, far too young, with complications after Covid.
The sun was shining down on us all teeing off down the beautiful 1st Tee. Gary was truly with us in spirit. The camaraderie and memories were shared throughout the day and evening. The fantastic organisation by Darren Bone, Mick Pryke and their team made sure a fabulous day was had by all. Danny Cook, who also played, and his team at the Corner Flag made sure that the presentation afterwards was enjoyed to its fullest. Food and drink (lots…) were consumed and the karaoke went on late into the evening. A
huge thank you also to Pedro, Sam, the bar staff and all at La Finca for accommodating us. The course was in top condition, with some rather difficult pin positions.
A huge thank you to everybody involved and a healthy €1,000 was raised from donations, auctions and two football cards, earning the winner of each €50. All proceeds will go to The Veteran Hotel, Isle of Wight which is a hub for Veterans, specifically Naval. There was some very good golf and some very bad golf! There was a plethora of winners but the main prize went to Steve Harding, pictured below with Darren Bone (far left), Steve Harding and his trophy (second left), Karl Beck (Gary’s son) and Mick Pryke (far right).
We hope to welcome you all again next year. A heartfelt thank you from his family and friends.
Netball galore in Rojales
Rojales Netball and Rojales Walking Netball Clubs have finished their very busy 2024/2025 season, but we will be back!
Firstly, the Walkers have enjoyed the visit of two international Clubs during the season, the most recent being on Saturday, 7 June where they played Cambourne and managed a 10-10 draw. Tracey and Claire, the hosts of the Club, are super proud of their players and are looking forward to what next season brings.
Secondly, the Rojales regular netballers (aka Rojales and Quesada) have plenty to shout about.
During their season they have visited Majorca where they played against Calvia; and they have hosted the Spanish teams of Madrid, Valencia, Alfaz and Pinoso during their tournament in May where Rojales came out as Champions.
Most recently they have played host to Cambourne (who brought two teams from Cambridge) and their local rivals, Alfaz. Rojales were pipped at the post into second this time with Quesada finishing in fourth place.
They are now taking a well deserved summer break but will be back in September hungry for more competitive netball.
If you are interested in joining this friendly and socialable Club and have the commitment and drive to be winners in either Walking or Regular netball then you can contact either Tracey 679539995 or Claire 680300679 by Whatsapp, Messenger or Facebook Rojales netball
Finally, we would like to thank our Walking Netball Sponsor, The Post Shop Villamartin, and a very, very special thanks to Pedro Llopis Salinas, the Sports Councillor, and the Ayuntamiento of Rojales for their continued support of our Clubs.
