Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez recently announced the October Above the Line employees. Three honorees were surprised at their work locations with the announcement they had been selected. Nominations are always open for this employee recognition. Nominate an outstanding employee today! Administrator - Dr. Maria Luisa Guerra, Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction “Dr. Guerra’s belief that “Our children are non-negotiable and are entitled to a free and public, high-quality education” guides her work on daily basis. Her commitment to ensuring that all students are academically successful is exhibited through her leadership, academic strategies and initiatives, and keeping her fiscal focus instructionally-driven. She recognizes the importance of students being present for instruction and that even at-risk students or those with discipline issues can be academically successful given the right motivation and attention.” Auxiliary - Angel Cantu, PE Paraprofessional, Schanen Estates Elementary School “As a successful leader, Mr. Cantu knows the importance of creating strong shared visions for teams. His great personality and inspiring motivation, always gets others to accomplish their goals as well. He continues to put others first and sets the tone for success. Mr. Cantu always listens to others and speaks and acts with honesty. He is always involved in mentoring students and has recently taken on the role of PTA president where he continues to show his love and devotion to our school, staff, parents, and students.” Educator - Alyse Baros, 1st grade teacher, Zachary Kolda Elementary School “Alyse has dedicated hours of work to provide for the district since March. To say that she has revolutionized the instructional guides for elementary math is an understatement. She, along with another colleague, helped teachers from all elementary grade levels during virtual instruction not just in math, but in other subjects as well. She worked all hours of the day and night to help the district’s elementary teachers provide quality virtual instruction during the pandemic, and they continued throughout the summer to make sure that virtual instruction would go smoothly in the fall.”
Congratulations, Mr. Jaime Escamilla! We want to congratulate Mr. Jaime Escamilla, Foy H. Moody High School’s welding instructor, for being recognized by the American Welding Society and Welding Journal as a top public school educator in welding.

Medical leave or time away from work The Department for Human Resources will assist you if you must be out of work due to a medical event, for a military leave of absence, or caring for a family member. Please refer to the Leave Administration webpage at https://www.ccisd.us/ HumanResources/LeaveBenefits for required FMLA leave documents to be completed and submitted prior to your absences. Additionally, any employee who has had a surgical procedure will be required to submit a completed Return to Work Notice-Work Status form for review prior to an employee’s release to work. Only 4 days left to enroll in benefits for 2021
There are four days remaining for all employees to complete their 2021 Benefits enrollment or waive all coverages. The 2021 Benefits Open Enrollment information can be found at https:// www.ccisd.us/HumanResources/ EmployeeBenefits. A recorded Zoom session of the presentation and the PowerPoint are posted as well. Insurance plans’ effective date is January 1, 2021. The deadline to complete the enrollment is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2020. If you are unable to locate the 2021 Enrollment email in your Inbox (search “Insurance”), use this link to begin https://www.ccisd.us/ forms?form=NIIhc. You will need your CCISD network Username and Password to access this benefits enrollment system. CORPUS CHRISTI INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
New Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam If you have taken or are planning to take the Core Subjects (EC-6), Core Subjects (4-8), English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) (4-8), or ELAR/Social Studies (4-8) exams, please review the information below: As of January 1, 2021, anyone applying for an Intern, Probationary, or Standard certificate will need to pass the new Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam in addition to the Core Subjects or ELAR exams (listed above) for certification. If you are able to pass, apply, and be issued your standard certificate prior to December 31, 2020, you can still get your certification without taking the STR exam. Teachers who are currently standard certified in Core Subjects (EC-6), Core Subjects (4-8), ELAR (4-8), or ELAR/SS (4-8) will not be required to pass the STR exam for renewal of their certificate. The STR exam requirement only impacts candidates seeking certification after January 1, 2021.
