ERIC MORECAMBE CENTRE IN HARPENDEN SCORES EXCELLENT!

Our Eric Morecambe Centre in Harpenden has been awarded a score of ‘excellent’ by Sport England’s Quest scheme.

The award followed a tough, two-day examination of its facilities and customer service, including a mystery visit during the pantomime season.

Theatre Manager Kate Barton said: “We are very proud to have received an excellent rating. This is our first time taking part in the assessment, and we are thrilled to receive this score which is a testament to the fantastic team we have here.”

The EMC was built on the site of the town’s former sports centre as part of a multi-million redevelopment by the Council and is run on the Council’s behalf by leisure contractor Everyone Active.

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values

have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Classics on the Common

30 Year Anniversary

Wednesday 24th July 2024 from 10.30am - 8pm

Since 1994, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for what has become one of the biggest mid-week classic car shows in Britain. The first year’s show attracted 125 cars. In 2023, our 29th year, upwards of 1,000 classics vehicles, motorcycles and scooters arrived on Harpenden Common from all over the UK. According to senior Rotary sources, the event can be seen from space! And there’s never any shortage of admirers. Thousands of spectators spend hours admiring the mouth-watering collection.

For our show a classic vehicle has to be at least 25 years old but we usually have one or two from around a century ago, such as a 1913 model T Ford and a 1916 Stanley Steamer. Every decade following is well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors. We’ve even had a Sinclair C5. We like to encourage diversity and invite some ‘supercars’ to the event.

In 2009 Harpenden Village Rotary Club took over responsibility for organising and running the show and in 2016 the charity Rotary in Harpenden took over. Rotarians are no strangers to running events and, although we have over 40 members, we need another 50 volunteers to help make the day a success.

We are very grateful to have our numbers boosted by members of our associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel. Other helpers include Harpenden Round Table, 41 Club and Harpenden Lions Club. Volunteers from the principal charities supported by the show get involved in bucket collections during the day. Also, we could not put on the event without the active support of friends and family. Our gratitude goes also to our sponsor, Harpenden Town Council, and the police and emergency services for their continued support. At heart, Classics on the Common remains a community event. Its charity fundraising is significant, too: since Rotary took on organising the show in 2009, £384,000 has been distributed to local, children’s, national and international charities.

Classic vehicle owners make a donation to enter and, although there is no entry charge to the public, spectators have always responded generously when approached with collecting buckets. We encourage local businesses linked to the motoring market by having stalls where they can sell their products or by taking banner advertising. In recent years, local motoring companies have been able to take space to display their newest models.

Our main charities for 2024 are:

YOUTH TALK, MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE, HOPE AND HOMES FOR CHILDREN & ROTARY IN HARPENDEN

Come along on the day for an amazing event and help support us.

Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day.

If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, dial 999.

Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog.

A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour. What to do if you see a dog in a car on a warm day:

In an emergency, the RSPCA may not be able to attend quickly enough, and with no powers of entry, they’d need police assistance at such an incident.

Don’t be afraid to dial 999, the police will inform the RSPCA if animal welfare assistance is required.

Help a dog in a hot car:

• Establish the animal’s health and condition. If they’re displaying any signs of heatstroke dial 999 immediately.

• If the situation becomes critical for the dog and the police are too far away or unable to attend, many people’s instinct will be to break into the car to free the dog.

If you decide to do this, please be aware that without proper justification, this could be classed as criminal damage and, potentially, you may need to defend your actions in court.

• Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and why. Take pictures or videos of the dog and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident. The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if damage would consent

to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971).

Once removed, if the dog is displaying signs of heatstroke, follow our emergency first aid advice, which you can find details of at this link: www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/ dogs/health/dogsinhotcars/heatstroke

This could mean the difference between life & death for the dog. For more information

16th, 17th & 18th OF AUGUST

The Flamstead Scarecrow Festival has been running in the village of Flamstead since 2002.

Originally the Flamstead Scarecrow Festival’s founder Peter Milson, from Lincolnshire, introduced the idea to the village in 2002 as a fundraiser for two charities. It has had the backing of the village and its residents ever since, with amazing Scarecrows being created each year for the public to view.

Each year, residents from the village of Flamstead create fabulous scarecrows and display them in their front gardens or around the village. There is a competition to see who can make the best scarecrow. Those attending the festival purchase voting forms & vote for their favourite scarecrows.

The festival is run for Charity, as a fundraiser by volunteers & relies on the goodwill of those attending to help make the festival a success.

For the past fifteen years, the festival was expertly run by Paul Mcmahon, Sally Wagon and their team on the Scarecrow Committee. The two charities which benefitted from the Scarecrow Festival were Friends of St Leonard’s Church and Herts Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.

In 2018, Paul and Sally stepped down after many years of hard work and Clare took over the reins with a reinvigorated committee who were eager to take the festival forward. In 2018, in addition to providing a fantastic day out for those attending the festival, the festival was run for the sole benefit of St Leonard’s Church.

The £23,000 raised from the festival was donated towards saving the historic church at the centre of village life. This church is in threat of closure if the roof is not repaired.

In 2019 the Festival was cancelled due to tragic events which took place in the village shortly before the event was due to take place. In 2020 and 2021, the event was cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

In 2022 the festival was held for the first time since 2018. The Festival raised £18,000. With 13k raised going to Friends of St Leonard’s and over 5k benefitting other local charities and causes.

In 2023 the festival raised £11k for FoSL and other local charities and organisations. The Flamstead Scarecrow Festival is back for 2024 and will be held on the 16th, 17th and 18th of August. We look forward to welcoming you back!

Thurs 19th Sept - The Arts Society Harpenden Area

Gustav Holst, “The Planets” and Beyond. Lecturer: Roger Askew

This lecture is in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth in 1874 of Gustav Holst. “The Planets” by Gustav Holst is one of the most popular and most recorded work in English music. Yet, apart from the tunes for the hymn “I Vow to Thee, My Country” and the carol “In the Bleak Midwinter”, most of Holst’s other music is neglected, unjustly so. This lecture will examine Holst’s life, the creation of “The Planets” and will explore many of his other works. It will be a surprising and revealing lecture, which is richly illustrated with musical example. All the lectures start at 10.30am promptly and last for an hour. Free tea and coffee is available from 10am prior to the start of the lecture. Annual membership will be £45 during 24/25. The guest fee will be £8 per lecture. Residents and community groups in St Albans District are to be given 10,000 free trees to help improve the local environment.

St Albans City and District Council (SADC) is helping to fund and organise the Your Tree Our Future initiative in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council.

This is the third year in a row that thousands of trees have been given away for planting in gardens and privately-owned green spaces across the District.

Residents can claim up to five trees from eight species – including Hornbeam, Wild Cherry and Field Maple - which are suited to the District’s climate and soil conditions.

Alternatively, they can ask for a pack made up of 36 trees to form a hedgerow.

Residents can apply at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/recycling-waste-and-environment/ countryside-management/news-and-campaigns/tree-giveaway.aspx where further information is available about the scheme. The trees will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Arrangements will be made for collections from key locations in the District during the tree planting season which starts in the autumn months.

The giveaway is one of more than 100 actions that SADC is taking to tackle the climate emergency and reduce harmful emissions to net zero by 2030.

Trees help to combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen back into the air. They also provide a natural habitat and food for wildlife.

SUMMER HOLIDAY ROAD TRIP MOTORING CHECKLIST

UK road trips are a fantastic option for a holiday, allowing you to explore large parts of the UK & see multiple destinations on the same trip. As with any holiday, it’s a good idea to do a few simple housekeeping Motoring jobs, to ensure that the trip is a success. Below are a few of these jobs.

1. Get a full service

If it’s due, definitely get your car serviced before you go! There’s nothing quite like the peace of mind knowing that your engine has had a really good going over.

2. Keep your screen clean

Spend 5 minutes cleaning your windscreen inside & out. Don’t start out on your summer holiday road trip with poor visibility.

3. Check your oil and water

You should always do this before any long trip regardless of the conditions. But it’s especially important if there’s hot weather forecast & the car is working hard with a full load.

4. Tyres

Check the condition & pressure of all the tyres on your vehicle. Hot road surfaces will naturally increase the heat of the tyre & this makes a difference to how it performs.

5. Kids and pets

Last but certainly not least, never leave kids or pets unattended inside a motor vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside your car will sky-rocket extremely quickly & creates a highly dangerous environment. Hopefully the above will ensure a fun filled, none breakdown road trip!
