HARPENDEN SCHOOL GOVERNORS HIGHLY COMMENDED IN NATIONAL AWARDS

The Trust Board at Harpenden’s Katherine Warington School has been highly commended in the “Outstanding Governance in a Single School” category at the National Governors Association (NGA) Awards 2025. The award ceremony was held on September 2025, at the Houses of Parliament.

The award recognizes exceptional dedication, strategic vision, and commitment to improving outcomes for students. Since opening just six years ago, the secondary school has achieved excellent academic and pastoral results for its students, which the headteacher attributes to the trustees’ guidance

Jenny Howarth, Chair of Trustees: Expressed her delight that the award acknowledged the passion and dedication of the trustees, as well as the supporting students and staff. She also stated her commitment to high governance standards.

David Martin, Headteacher: Praised the Trust Board’s tireless commitment and strategic vision as the foundation of the school’s success, noting that the national recognition proves what can be achieved through a shared vision.

TUCKFIELD ESTATES

Five Things That Make Us Quintessentially Different

Fewer homes, more heart.

We see our work less as sales and more as storytelling. By keeping our portfolio purposefully refined, we can give each home the strategy and attention it deserves. Every client is a narrative we shape with care, one that ends not just in a sale, but in a result that feels considered, crafted, and truly well-told.

Honesty is our core value.

We don’t disguise the truth. If the market timing isn’t right, or a price is set too high, we’ll tell you. When the moment allows, we’ll be bold, but never at the cost of good sense. No gloss, no empty promises, just clear, considered advice, even if it means stepping back.

We’re serious about style.

Great marketing is never an afterthought, it is what elevates a property from overlooked to irresistible. From thoughtful staging and meticulous photography to the way we craft your home’s story, every detail is designed to capture attention (and hold it) for all the right reasons.

We’re proudly boutique.

As an independent agency, we remain agile and personal. Your journey is never handed down a chain of faces. Small, however, should never be mistaken for slight: our size is our edge, giving us the freedom to work smarter, faster, and with a level of care the big names simply can’t match

We make moving human.

Behind every sale lies a story, a new chapter, a change of pace, a shift in circumstance. We see it not as a transaction, but as a transition, and approach it with the sensitivity it deserves. Long after the papers are signed, it is how the process felt that is remembered.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

So What’s Our Edge?

Principled | Precise | Proven

“We don’t play games, believe in smokeand-mirrors, or engage in underhand tactics. What we do is simple: secure the sale, and secure it well.”

Not every agent can say the same. So perhaps the real question is: why settle for anyone else?

The installation of a garden of rest at Westfield Road Cemetery in Harpenden has been made a priority in a £730,000 programme of improvements.

This work will include the refurbishment of the existing memorial wall and a new area for the scattering of ashes.

St Albans City and District Council’s cemeteries team is in contact with residents who want to lay the ashes of loved ones to rest at the site and have set up a waiting list.

The enhancement is one of a series of projects the Council is undertaking at its three cemeteries with the other two located at Hatfield Road and London Road, St Albans.

An update on the works was given to the Public Realm Committee at its September meeting.

Councillors were also told of the progress being made at London Road where surveys are being undertaken to prepare for its new garden of rest.

Preparatory work is also underway to create a new Muslim burial area which may include vaults or chambers.

IMPROVEMENTS TO CEMETERIES IN ST ALBANS DISTRICT NOW UNDERWAY

At Hatfield Road, new seeds sown this year should create an attractive wildflower area to enhance the Green Meadow burial area over the next two years.

In an area of the cemetery adjacent to the Alban Way, a woodland walk is being developed.

Alternative memorials, including bird and bat boxes, are to be made available to commemorate loved ones.

In addition, the cemeteries team is currently sourcing suppliers for new benches and litter bins for all three sites.

The improvement programme followed a review of the cemeteries by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management as well as a public consultation.

Among those who continue to be consulted are the leaders of faith groups, funeral directors, other local authorities and community groups including the Gypsy and Traveller Empowerment Charity.

TO HELP THE HOMELESS

Hertfordshire-based homelessness charity, DENS, has announced the return of its popular Sponsored Sleepout on Friday 21st November, with free places available for everyone in the community.

Taking place at the new venue of Hammond Academy in Hemel Hempstead, the fundraising event promises an inspiring night under the stars, packed full of community spirit and entertainment. Open to adults and children aged eight and over, the evening will include activities for all ages, an informative Q&A session about the charity’s work and live music performances.

When it’s time to bed down, participants can experience just a small glimpse of the challenges faced by rough sleepers during the harsh winter months.

At dawn, they can wake up feeling a huge sense of achievement, knowing the sponsorship they have raised will make a life-changing impact for local people facing homelessness each night.

The event is proudly sponsored by Safran Electrical & Power UK, a leading aerospace company, based in Pitstone, that is committed to supporting local causes. Last year’s edition saw a record-breaking attendance – raising an astonishing £33,000 to help rebuild the lives of local people facing homelessness. Charlotte McCarthy, Community Fundraiser at DENS, said: “We’re determined to make this our biggest Sponsored Sleepout ever. It’s a truly eye-opening experience, and an inspiring way to come together as a community. By raising sponsorship on the night, every participant helps us make an even greater difference to local people in need.”

Harpenden & Wheathampstead Gang Show 2026

Tuesday 13th until Saturday 17th January 2026

Showing at The Eric Morecambe Centre Rothamsted Park Trail, Harpenden AL5 2FR

The annual multi-award-winning spectacular of song, dance and comedy returns to the EMC for its 76th run! 143 Scouts aged 9 to 18 perform their socks off in a sixperformance run. Recognised as one of the very best of its kind, it’s a ‘must see’ show!

Although Glasgow Gang Show started in 1936, Harpenden Gang Show is the longest continuously running Gang Show in the world, having had a continuous run every year since 1949, except for when the Covid pandemic forced the 72nd Show to be postponed to 2022.

They were very lucky to be able to hold our 71st Show in January 2020 before the Covid pandemic forced a first national lockdown. Before then, even a severed electricity cable didn’t stop the Show in 1974. Parents drove their cars onto the steps of the Public Halls and lit the stage with headlights!

The Eric Morecambe Centre in Harpenden has hosted the Gang Show since 2022 and is bigger and better than the old venue and can accommodate around 500 audience.

The Perfect Halloween Pumpkin!

Things You’ll Need. Newspaper, Pumpkin, Felt-tip Pen or pencil, Sharp Knife, Tea Light.

1. Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some people prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped but it’s up to you.

2. Draw a circle or hexagon on the top of the pumpkin in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through.

3. Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

4. Remove the stem end, which will act as a lid, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp on to the newspaper.

5. Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.

6. After you have emptied out the insides, draw a pattern for the face with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Make sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough to get the full effect later.

7. Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

8. Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

9. Place a tea light inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.

10. Stand back and admire your handy work!

In 1979 Harpenden’s History Society ran a competition for recollections of life in Harpenden before 1914. It attracted 15 contributions with the age of entrants ranging up to 100 years old. The Society’s exhibition draws on those memories as well as others from the Society’s Les Casey Archive. Together they provide a picture of what living in Harpenden was like in those halcyon days before World War One.

fit20 Harpenden - Science-Based Strength Training That Works

What if we told you that just 20 minutes a week could transform your health, strength, and longevity? That’s exactly what we offer at fit20 Harpenden – because strength isn’t just about muscles, it’s about living better, longer.

We’re Liam and Alicja, the proud owners of fit20 Harpenden. We opened our studio because we believe everyone deserves to feel stronger, healthier and more confident – whatever their age or fitness level.

At our studio, we focus solely on strength training. From your 30s onwards, you naturally lose muscle mass, which can lead to weakness, reduced mobility, poor balance, and increased risk of injury. The good news is that strength training is the most effective way to prevent or even reverse this decline.

We use a unique, science-backed method that targets all major muscle groups through highintensity, low-impact training on specialised machines. It’s safe, efficient, and incredibly effective – just one 20-minute session per week, with no need to change clothes or shower afterwards.

You’ll always train 1-to-1 with one of us or a member of our team in a calm, private studio. Each exercise is done slowly and precisely, meaning maximum results without strain. Sessions are by appointment only, so you’ll never have to queue or worry about busy gym floors.

STRONGER FOR LIFE - IN JUST 20 MINUTES A WEEK

The benefits of strength training go far beyond stronger muscles – they impact your entire quality of life. Stronger muscles support better posture, improve bone density, increase energy, reduce joint pain and improve balance. They also boost your metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity and enhance cardiovascular health.

fit20 really is for everyone. Our members range from teenagers to people in their late 80s. You don’t need to be fit to start – just ready to take the first step.

One of our members, Helen, summed it up perfectly:

“After 5 months, I’m starting to notice real changes in my strength, and I genuinely enjoy the sessions and seeing my progression. I feel stronger, more confident, and it’s encouraging to see the small gains build week by week.”

We’re passionate about helping people feel stronger for life. Whether it’s recovering from an injury, keeping up with your children, or simply feeling more confident each day – we’d love to welcome you for a free introductory session so you can experience fit20 first-hand.

BUSINESS IS BOOMING AT THE SHOP THAT’S ALL BANGERS AND FLASH!

What’s your favourite restaurant or café in Harpenden? Ours are the Silver Palate (fantastic bruschetta, better than in Italy!), Gail’s (open nice and early for breakfast!), Lussman’s (super steak and chips!) and, a bit further afield, The Fox (where we take clients for a smart lunch). When it comes to fireworks, which is why we’re here, there is only one shop in town! Admittedly, we’re not quite in town, being just beyond the city limits, still in Hertfordshire but with a Luton postcode. To add to the confusion, we pay our rates to Dacorum, somewhat bizarrely being in the parish of Flamstead! None of this is of any relevance except for you to know where to find us – in Half Moon Lane, Pepperstock LU1 4LL, just half a mile off the A1081 between Harpenden and Luton. We’ve been on this site for 35 years, which added to the 5 years we spent in the Redbourn area means we are celebrating 40 years in fireworks this year. It has been an amazing journey, starting out with the Redbourn and St Albans displays back in the 1980s, which we are still doing, and progressing today to being one of the leading names in UK fireworks. We also cater for the domestic market. You’re welcome to visit our fireworks shop in Pepperstock where you will find an Aladdin’s cave of firework magic. With Bonfire Night only weeks away, we look forward to seeing you!

As the foremost domestic glass replacement company in the UK for more than 18 years, Cloudy2Clear Windows are the leading name in the industry. There is now no need for you to risk your windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the street. You can join over 340,000 happy customers and replace your glass ethically and affordably. Why not take a minute to check your home to see if any double glazing has failed? Taking action now can prevent future financial problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Stephen Moon it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for

a number of years. In addition since starting the business in 2005, Cloudy2Clear have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.

WINTER WONDERLAND WEBSITES

Track Santa www.noradsanta.org

On Dec. 24, 1955, a call was made to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Centre in Colorado Springs, Colo. However, this call was not from the president or a general It was from a girl in Colorado Springs who was following the directions in an advertisement printed in the local paper – she wanted to know the whereabouts of Santa Claus. The ad said “Hey, Kiddies! Call me direct and be sure and dial the correct number ” However, the number was printed incorrectly in the advertisement and rang into the CONAD operations centre. On duty that night was Colonel Harry Shoup, who has come to be known as the “Santa Colonel ” Colonel Shoup received numerous calls that night and rather than hanging up, he had his operators find the location of Santa Claus and reported it to every child who phoned in that night. Thus began a tradition carried on by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) when it was formed in 1958 Today, through satellite systems, high-powered radars and jet fighters, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he makes his Yuletide journey around the world.

OCTOBER 25

Thurs 2nd Oct - Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit

When life gives Rhod lemons… In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, & an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back & feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate & way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs…with a little help from an old adversary. Time: 8pm. Tickets available by calling the Box Office on 01727 844488 or visit www.alban-arena.co.uk Venue: Alban Arena, Civic Centre, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3LD.

Sat 4th Oct - Hertfordshire Chorus presents Duruflé’s Requiem

Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem was commissioned in 1941 but not completed & performed until 1947. Despite being composed against the backdrop of a world war, his Requiem offers both optimism & hope. Duruflé’s setting is often compared with that of his older contemporary Gabriel Fauré as both focus on the meditative aspects of the mass. Although a twentieth century work, Duruflé based much of his Requiem on Gregorian chant, creating a unique and haunting atmosphere. 7.30pm – 9.30pm. Event Address: St Peter’ Church, St Albans AL1 3HG. For more info visit: www.enjoystalbans.com

Sat 4th Oct - The Smyths

Acclaimed by Johnny Marr (Radio 6) & Stephen Street (Smiths Producer), rather than employ silly props & clichéd visual tropes The Smyths focus on the live experience of a Smiths show, imagining what The Smiths would sound like today after more than 40 years of playing the songs to several generations of fans; from the teens of then who are Grandparents now, to their children and onto to the teens of today. The music of The Smiths remains as fresh and important as it did at the time of its inception. Show Times: 8pm. Tickets available by calling the Box Office on 01727 844488 or visit www.alban-arena.co.uk Venue: Alban Arena, Civic Centre, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3LD.

Mon 6th Oct - 40th Anniversary of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britian Formed in 1985 as the antidote to mindless pop, egocentric rock, and the indulgent, bluster of the music business, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain donned black tuxedos, and began giving ‘concerts’ in tiny rooms above old pubs. Four decades (and 400,000,000 plucks) later they’re still thrilling audiences with their off-beat humour and four-stringed virtuosity from Tasmania to the Arctic Circle, Windsor Castle to Carnegie Hall. Between Angels and Devils: Boticelli and Renaissance Florence

Sandro Botticelli is one of the most popular painters of the Italian Renaissance. His beautiful ‘Birth of Venus’ and elegant ‘Primavera’ are amongst the best known images from the Florentine Golden Age, but the times he lived in were volatile and dangerous and his art masked political turmoil and religious unease. As Florence moved from the luxurious era of the Medici to the religious austerity of Savonarola, Botticelli and his painting became part of this great change – but was he on the side of the angels or the devils? Lectures start at 10:30 prompt, please arrive in good time from 10:00 to have a free tea or coffee and chat. The Subtle Science and Exact Art of Colour in English garden design – why gardening can rank as a fine art. In 1882 Gertrude Jekyll wrote a short but seminal article in The Garden in which she urged the readers to “remember that in a garden we are painting a picture”. As an accomplished watercolour artist, Miss Jekyll was familiar with the principles of using colours, but she felt that in gardens these principles “had been greatly neglected”. This talk looks at how to apply these principles in designing a border, but it also looks at the ways in which a border is different from a painting. However, it goes further than this and looks at how contemporary work of the likes of Turner, Monet, Rothko, Jackson Pollack evolved in parallel with ideas about what a garden or border should. Lectures start at 10:30 prompt, please arrive in good time from 10:00 to have a free tea or coffee and chat. Guests may book online using the following link: www.buytickets.at/theartssocietyharpendenarea/1342816 Further information, guest ticket prices and membership fees can be found at: www.tasha.org.uk

Roll the chilled pastry out on a lightly floured surface until it’s slightly larger than a 22cm fluted loose-bottomed tart tin, then use it to line the tin. Prick the base all over using a fork, then chill for 20 mins.

STEP 3

About 5 mins before the pastry has finished chilling, heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas

STEP 4

Blitz the flour and butter together in a food processor until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then pulse in the caster sugar and a few gratings of nutmeg. Pulse in the egg yolk and enough cold water (about 1 tbsp) to create a firm dough. Tip into a bowl, cover and chill for at least 20 mins. Alternatively, rub the butter into the flour in a large bowl using your fingertips, then stir in the sugar, nutmeg, egg yolk and water.

Remove the pastry from the fridge, then line with a piece of baking parchment and fill with baking beans or uncooked rice or lentils. Bake for 12 mins, then remove the beans and parchment and bake for another 8-10 mins until the pastry is lightly golden. Step 4 Meanwhile, combine the pumpkin purée, 2 eggs, light brown soft sugar, cinnamon, ginger and soft cheese. Grate in about ½ tsp nutmeg, mix well, then pour the filling into the pastry case. Bake for 30 mins until the filling is lightly set with a slight wobble in the middle. Arrange the pecans over the filling in concentric circles, then brush over the maple syrup. Return to the oven for a further 15 mins until the pecans are lightly golden and the filling is set. Leave to cool completely in the tin before removing and serving. Will keep chilled for up to three days.

The spicy wafting aroma of mulled wine on a chilly winter’s evening gives a festive air to even the gloomiest of weather. The warming spices of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and tangy zest of orange brighten up a plain red wine and put you in the mood for celebrating Christmas.

There are hundreds of recipes for mulled wine (or gluhwein) and everyone has their own secret ingredient. Maybe a little dash of cognac, or another spice added. The important thing is to get the amount of sugar right. Too much sugar makes it too sickly and cloying, too little and the tartness loses much of the comfort factor that makes mulled wine so warming and festive. So the golden rule is to add less sugar than you think you’ll need, then taste the wine once it is warmed through and add more sugar just until it tastes right for you. Each wine will be different and individual tastes vary, so bask in the heady warmth of wine and spices and stand over your mulled wine tasting little sips until it is just right!

Choosing a wine to mull is another important consideration. You don’t want to use total plonk, but it is a waste to use a well-aged bottle of prize wine. Ideally you should use a red wine that is not too tannic, so avoid wines aged in oak, but it should have enough flavour and body to be drinkable on its own. A medium bodied claret, chianti or merlot works well.

Ingredients – Serves 10

2 bottles of medium-bodied red wine

1 cup sugar and more to taste

6 cinnamon sticks

15 cloves

grated nutmeg

2 oranges

Push the cloves into the skin of the oranges then cut the oranges in half. Pour the wine into a large stainless steel or enamel saucepan and warm over a medium heat. Add the sugar, spices and clove studded oranges. Keep an eye on the wine and turn the heat to very low as soon as it gets close to simmering. You don’t want it to boil or it will lose its alcohol content! Taste for sugar and add more until it tastes right for you. Keep it steaming over a low heat for an hour or so to allow the spices to infuse. Ladle it into glasses or mugs and breathe in the spicy aroma.

Other things you can add to mulled wine: Star anise, bay leaves, mace, ginger, cardamom, lemon, lime and brandy to name a few.

HOME INSULATION ADVICE

With energy bills still high in 2025, DIY home insulation remains one of the most cost-effective ways for UK households to cut costs and stay warm. Even small improvements can make a noticeable difference.

Start with loft insulation, as a quarter of heat is lost through the roof. Rolls of mineral wool or ecofriendly alternatives like sheep’s wool are widely available at DIY stores and can be laid between and across joists. Ensure ventilation gaps remain clear to avoid condensation.

Cavity wall insulation is best left to professionals, but you can tackle internal wall linings yourself. Thermal lining paper or insulated plasterboard helps reduce draughts and heat loss in older solid-wall homes.

Don’t overlook floor insulation. For suspended timber floors, fit mineral wool or rigid boards between joists, sealing gaps with expanding foam. Rugs also provide a simple extra barrier. Windows and doors are common weak points. Apply draught-proofing strips around frames and letterboxes, fit brush seals on the bottom of doors, and use thermal curtains or blinds. For single glazing, DIY secondary glazing kits offer an affordable upgrade.

Finally, tackle the small gaps—around skirting boards, pipework, and loft hatches—with caulk or foam sealant. These low-cost fixes reduce cold draughts significantly.

With a weekend’s work and modest investment, DIY insulation can save hundreds of pounds annually, improve comfort, and reduce your home’s carbon footprint—well worth the effort in 2025.

BLEEDING RADIATORS

Keeping your heating system running efficiently is more important than ever in the UK in 2025, with energy costs and environmental concerns at the forefront. One simple DIY task that makes a big difference is bleeding your radiators.

Radiators can develop air pockets over time. Instead of filling with hot water, the trapped air rises to the top, leaving the radiator only partly warm. This means your boiler works harder, rooms heat unevenly, and your bills creep up. Bleeding radiators restores proper circulation, saves energy, and ensures consistent warmth.

To bleed a radiator, first switch off your central heating and let the system cool slightly. You’ll need a radiator key (or a flat-head screwdriver for modern valves) and a cloth to catch drips. Insert the key into the bleed valve, usually found at the top corner. Turn it slowly anti-clockwise until you hear a hiss of escaping air. Once water begins to flow steadily, tighten the valve again.

Work through your radiators one by one, starting with those downstairs and moving up. When finished, check your boiler’s pressure gauge— releasing air can lower system pressure, so you may need to top it up.

Regularly bleeding radiators—ideally once a year before winter—keeps your heating system efficient, lowers energy use, and ensures every room feels properly heated. It’s a quick, low-cost DIY job that pays off immediately in comfort and savings. For more advice visit www.britishgas.co.uk

SMART LIGHTING

Smart lighting has quickly become one of the easiest ways to upgrade UK homes in 2025, offering both convenience and energy savings. With the right setup, you can improve comfort, boost security, and even cut electricity costs.

Start with smart bulbs, now widely available in LED form with improved efficiency. They can be controlled by smartphone apps, voice assistants, or automated schedules. Colour-changing bulbs allow you to switch from bright white for working to warm tones for relaxing—all without changing a fitting.

For larger spaces, smart switches and dimmers are a cost-effective choice. They let you automate traditional light fittings without replacing every bulb. Many models now integrate seamlessly with popular UK smart home systems like Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.

Motion sensors are another smart addition, ideal for hallways, bathrooms, and outdoor areas. Lights only come on when needed, saving energy while adding security. In 2025, more households are pairing these with solar-powered smart garden lights for sustainable outdoor illumination.

Consider scene setting too: create presets for movie nights, reading, or entertaining guests. With a single tap or command, your entire lighting scheme adjusts to match the mood.

Finally, smart lighting can support home security. Timers and randomised schedules make an empty house look lived-in, a simple deterrent for burglars.

By mixing bulbs, switches, sensors, and automation, UK homeowners can create a smart, energyefficient lighting system that’s stylish, practical, and future-ready.

Alternative ways to keep warm at home.

As the temperatures drop in the autumn & winter months, it’s tempting to turn up the central heating to stay warm and comfortable which can easily lead to higher energy bills. There’s plenty of alternatives ways to avoid turning up the thermostat.

1. Layer Up:

Embrace autumn fashion by wearing your favourite jumpers, scarves, and cosy socks. Layering up with clothing can help you stay warm without relying solely on heating systems. Blankets are also super handy for another comforting and cosy layer.

2. Warm Beverages: Treat yourself to hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Not only will these warm drinks keep you toasty, but they also create a sense of comfort and relaxation.

3. Use Draught Stoppers: Prevent cold draughts from seeping into your home by using draught stoppers at the base of doors and windows. This simple trick can make a significant difference in maintaining a cosy atmosphere.

4. Optimize Sunlight: During the daytime, keep your curtains open to let in natural sunlight. Sunlight can help warm up your living spaces without the need for heating systems.

By embracing these cosy alternatives, you can significantly reduce your reliance on central heating and cut down on energy costs while still enjoying a warm and inviting home.

AUTUMN CONDENSATION SEASON IS COMING!

As properties become more energy efficient, & we spend more time inside them during the autumn and winter, moisture & humidity can build up inside alongside falling air temperatures outside - causing condensation.

The good news is condensation can usually be reduced through changes to lifestyle habits and improving your property’s ventilation, rather than requiring professional help.

To stop condensation forming, you should:

• Open your windows to allow air to circulate more freely

• Open the trickle vents on your windows at night and keep bedroom doors open

• Use extractor fans when bathing or cooking, or open windows to allow moist air to escape

• Never dry clothes inside on radiators

• Use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air

• Heat your home to a consistent temperature

• Move furniture away from walls to allow air to circulate around it.

Condensation on windows can be wiped away with a dry cloth or tissues, while there are also window vacuums available that can help to remove droplets from glass.

While cleaning away condensation can help limit the chance of mould forming around windows and on walls, make sure your home is well ventilated and heated, and try to minimise the amount of moist air you produce through cooking and bathing.

AUTUMN GARDEN JOBS

Autumn is a beautiful time of year with all the stunning tree colours and leaves on the ground. On breezy days it may see pointless raking up leaves, but if you do you can put them on the compost heap and look forward to rich leaf mulch next year. Leaf mould provides nutrients for the soil, helps reduce weeds and allows the soil to retain more moisture.

If you don’t already have a compost heap or bin then October is a great time to start one, with all those leaves and cuttings to dispose of.

Remember to be on the lookout for hedgehogs in any leaf piles, untidy areas or bonfires.

Autumn jobs include:

1. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or conservatory

2. Cut back perennials that have died down

3. Divide herbaceous perennials

4. Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants

5. Plant out spring cabbages

6. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts

7. Prune climbing roses

8. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year

9. Last chance to mow lawns & trim hedges in mild areas

10. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf For more gardening tips throughout the year visit

A visit to the woods during this spectacular season is always a treat. Grab your woolly scarf, pull on your wellies and venture out into the crisp autumn air. Listen to the crunch of leaves beneath your feet and get swept away in all that this season has to offer.

Take a walk

Woodland walks are a great way to get out and about during the autumn. Stroll along wooded paths, smell the ripening fruits and admire the beauty of the leaves as they change colour.

Go foraging

Autumn is one of the best times to head out foraging. The woods are filled with a feast of delights to forage, from hazelnuts to blackberries, sweet chestnuts to crab apples.

Search for fairytale fungi

Watch for wildlife

This time of year is perfect for observing wildlife. Watch the arrival of migrant birds, see the spectacle of deer rutting, admire the intricate spider webs as they appear & look out for foraging squirrels in search of nuts.

Weird and wonderful fungi is very much part of the woodland furniture at this time of year. Look out for the bright red caps of fly agaric, the aptly-named dead man’s fingers and the glow-in-the-dark honey fungus. Just remember lots of them will be poisonous, so look but don’t touch.

Record your findings

Recording your seasonal sightings at www.naturescalendar.woodlandtrust.org.uk will help scientists observe how the changing climate is affecting the UK’s wildlife. For more information visit: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk

AUTUMN MOTORING

Driving conditions in autumn can become more challenging than other months due to heavy rainfall causing floods on the roads… to leaves piling up under trees causing cars to slip and slide. That’s why it pays to be prepared.

1. Preparing inside the car

Now’s the time to clean the inside of your car ensuring the windscreen is clean. Low sun in the autumn months are a potentially dangerous, as they bring out the worst in a dirty windscreen.

2. Preparing around the car

Be sure to check all the car’s bulbs are working and don’t forget the reversing light.

3. Preparing the tyres

Your tyres are vital to staying safe on the road. To ensure they perform as well as possible, the tread depth should be regularly inspected. If the tread drops below 3mm, you should consider replacing them.

4. Preparing under the bonnet

Grab your handbook, lift the bonnet (when the engine is cold) and roll up your sleeves: it’s time to check your car’s vital signs. Ensure the screen wash is full up, so it’s ready to use to clean your windscreen during autumn weather.

Next, ensure the level of engine coolant is correct; refer to the car’s handbook for the location of the reservoir and quantity required.

The last check is under the bonnet for engine oil. Do this at least 10 minutes after the engine is switched off, to allow oil to return to the sump. Grab two paper towels, one to grip and remove the dipstick and the other to wipe the end of the dipstick clean. The oil should be between the minimum & maximum marks.
