INSPIRING PHILANTHROPY IN THE COMMUNITY
COVID-19: HOW WE GOT HERE –AND HOW YOU HELPED US WHEN WE NEEDED IT MOST
his special issue of Healthy Giving is our way of saying thank you to the thousands of people who came together in support of Beaumont during the unprecedented — and ongoing — COVID-19 crisis. This support embodies the incredible generosity, kindness and selflessness of the communities we serve — and I want you to know that everyone at Beaumont appreciates it.
I also want you to know that we appreciate the feedback we get from our donors and friends, who care enough to get involved and share their opinions on health care and the future of Beaumont. Our unwavering goal is to ensure our hospitals remain among the very best not only in Michigan but in the United States.
Certainly, our mettle has been tested with COVID-19 and I know you will join me in acknowledging the outstanding job that our physicians, nurses and so many other frontline caregivers have done in caring for patients coping with the life-threatening effects of a completely new virus.
As soon as this virus hit southeast Michigan, we reached out to our friends and partners, knowing that our medical team would require support to treat the massive influx of patients that began arriving at our hospitals in March. And you responded in an extraordinary manner.
As soon as this virus hit southeast Michigan, we reached out to our friends and partners, knowing that our medical team would require support to treat the massive influx of patients that began arriving at our hospitals in March. And you responded in an extraordinary manner.
In the following pages, you will read stories about individuals who not only made their own significant contribution but encouraged others to give back as well. You’ll read about corporations and small businesses that stopped what they were doing to answer our calls for personal protective equipment. You’ll learn about foundations and nonprofits who stepped in and gave where help was needed most. And you’ll read about young people who took their first philanthropic steps, inspiring us all.
On behalf of the Foundation and Beaumont Health, I hope you will accept our most heartfelt thanks for all that you and so many people in metro Detroit did to give back and save lives. We will always be grateful.
With best wishes for health and safety for you and your loved ones,
Margaret Cooney Casey Chief Development Officer, Beaumont Health President, Beaumont Health Foundationm sure you will agree that the past six months have felt like a lifetime. The rapid spread of COVID-19 locally, nationally and around the world has been unlike anything any of us has ever experienced. For much of the crisis, Michigan was in the top 10 states for number of cases, and as the state’s largest health care system, Beaumont quickly became positioned at the epicenter of this outbreak.
I am incredibly proud of our physicians, nurses and the rest of our health care heroes, who worked tirelessly through the height of this crisis to save lives. I have never seen a more inspiring example of the compassionate, extraordinary care we strive to provide every day.
Despite the pandemic — and indeed, because of it — health care continues to change, and partnering with other like-minded, quality-driven organizations is one way of ensuring strength and stability. Beaumont always has been known for its quality — in fact, this year, we once again had the most nationally ranked U.S. News and World Report hospitals in Michigan. It is that kind of quality that shone through so strongly as we fought through the COVID-19 surge in the spring and it is that kind of quality that we will continue to cultivate and sustain as we move forward.
I hope that this special issue of Healthy Giving will demonstrate how appreciative all of us at Beaumont are for the outpouring of support that has occurred over the past six months. Your donations, outreach and words of encouragement have been bright spots during some of our toughest days.
This year will likely be remembered as one of the most challenging periods of our lives. One thing I will most certainly remember is the bravery, resilience and compassion that our patients, staff and community demonstrated time and time again.
Thank you. We are so grateful to have partners and supporters such as you.
Sincerely,
John Fox Beaumont Health President and CEOThis year will likely be remembered as one of the most challenging periods of our lives. One thing I will most certainly remember is the bravery, resilience and compassion that our patients, staff and community demonstrated time and time again.
In early January 2020, news began to surface of a mysterious new illness spreading through parts of China. Several weeks later, the first U.S. case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Washington state. By the end of the month, the World Health Organization had declared the virus to be a global public health emergency.
Cases rose throughout the country, and on March 10, the rst two positive cases were con rmed in Michigan, prompting a state of emergency declaration. Three days later, K-12 schools were closed and gatherings of 250 or more individuals were banned. By March 23, Michigan had more
than 1,300 COVID-19 cases and 15 deaths, and a statewide stay-at-home order for all non-essential workers was mandated.
As the largest health care provider in Michigan, Beaumont was at the center of this unprecedented con uence of events.
It was a situation unlike anything any of us had faced in our lifetimes. But while the coronavirus continued to spread at a staggering rate — by mid-May, there were more than 50,000 con rmed cases in the state — Beaumont Health’s extraordinary team rose to the challenge.
Beaumont’s best minds set to work looking for the most promising treatments and protocols, and our Research Institute launched a number of studies to begin solving the life-threatening questions posed by the virus.
In mid-April, just a month after Michigan’s rst cases were con rmed, Beaumont researchers launched a number of studies to help address testing and treatment needs. These included:
• the nation’s largest serological testing study for COVID-19 antibodies as well as
• the SINK COVID-19 study, examining whether two readily available medications would work as treatments.
We are so proud of the tireless, compassionate and extraordinary care our Beaumont team has provided to patients and families facing some of the hardest moments of their lives. And we want you to know how proud we are of you. From the moment the COVID-19 outbreak hit Michigan, our community has been there to provide support in so many ways.
This special edition of Healthy Giving is our way of saying thank you for being there when we needed you most. In this issue, we are sharing stories of how so many of our donors have helped support the work of our caregivers and researchers.
From monetary donations to in-kind donations of personal protective equipment for our physicians and nurses to cards and notes of support for our caregivers, you have been with us every step of the way.
You have helped us to save lives and played such an important role in helping our region adapt to and begin to move forward in the face of this pandemic. We are forever grateful.
A group of longtime and dedicated donors stepped up to make the Beaumont Research Institute’s COVID-19 Serological Testing Study — the largest such study in the nation when it launched — possible.
Together, these philanthropic leaders pledged more than $4.5 million toward the project’s $6 million total cost. The study launched in mid-April thanks to the following donors:
• Sidney and Madeline Forbes
• Nathan and Catherine Forbes
• Levy Dresner Foundation
• Stephen and Bobbi Polk
• Elizabeth Rose
• Warren and Carol Ann Rose and Family
• Mickey, Steven, Margie and Edward Shapiro
• Gwen and S. Evan Weiner
• Hearst Foundations
There were a dozen other donors who provided more than $500,000 in support, bringing the total raised to $5 million.
“We are so grateful to these generous, long-time donors who stepped up to support this important research. We could not have proceeded with this project without their support,” said Beaumont Health CEO John Fox.
Serological blood testing detects antibodies the body creates to ght an infection. In the case of COVID-19, antibodies might develop as soon as three to six days after infection. Even after recovery from COVID-19, antibodies will remain in the blood.
In many other infections, antibodies offer immunity against reinfection. The study is helping provide insight as to whether COVID-19 antibodies act in the same way.
“This study will provide crucial information about the virus, how it spreads, and whether people are protected when they develop antibodies,” said Dr. Matthew Sims, Beaumont’sdirector of Infectious Diseases Research and principal investigator of the serological testing study.
“These are all things we have to learn in order to get our life here in Michigan, the United States and the world back to normal.”
While antibody tests have begun ooding the market, Beaumont Health’s serological testing study stands apart in several important ways. Many tests simply report whether antibodies exist in a blood sample whereas the Beaumont study is looking at the actual amount and type of antibody.
Beaumont is also testing participants at least twice, several weeks apart, to determine the relationship between antibody levels and disease severity as well as how long immunity may last should it be proven to exist.
It could also help answer how widespread the virus is in our community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 25 to 50 percent of people with COVID-19 might not show symptoms. However, those individuals couldstill spread the disease to others. By conductingvoluntarytestingof more than 21,000 Beaumont Health employees, this study is identifying the number of people within our health system who have COVID-19 antibodies, but who never reported any symptoms.
“By testing health care workers, we may also be able to reduce anxiety and stress on our already over-taxed team of caregivers, letting clinicians focus on the task at hand — helping people recover from this virus,” Dr. Sims said. “We can determine how effective personal protective equipment is against this virus, and if there are any weak spots within the system that need extra protectionastheythemselveswork to protect the community.”
The study also may help with developing a potential treatment for the virus: Individuals who are found to have high levels of COVID-19 antibodies in their system could be recruited to donate plasma for a procedure called convalescent plasma transfusion to treat patients who are in the gravest danger.
“The donors who contributed to this project are playing a large and important role in helping us uncover important answers about COVID-19 and where we go from here,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Health Foundation. “Our country is facing a crisis unlike any we have experienced in our lifetime, but groundbreaking research like this can play a signi cant role in providing the answers we need to begin the recovery process.”
When Laurie and Tom Cunnington saw the devastating effect that COVID-19 was having on Michigan, they decided to take action and reach out to the Beaumont Health Foundation.
The long-time Beaumont supporters, whose previous gift led to the establishment of the Cunnington Family Comprehensive Lung Cancer Center at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, made a $100,000 commitment to support Beaumont’s COVID-19 Response Fund.
The Cunningtons were among the rst to donate in the early days of the crisis, recognizing the role that Beaumont would play as case numbers in the state quickly grew. “Beyond their own generous contribution, Laurie and Tom challenged both the Beaumont Health Foundation board and a small group of close friends to also raise funds for this important effort,” said Geoffrey Hockman, Beaumont Health Foundation board president. “That is the kind of leadership that can really make a difference, and I’m grateful for the way they encouraged such terri c support.”
In a letter to more than two dozen other couples, Laurie wrote:
“I have seen firsthand how everyone at Beaumont Health is working hard long hours in challenging circumstances to save lives…These men and women are putting their own personal health at risk as they tirelessly help save lives.” She urged others to consider matching their own gift and help Beaumont secure the equipment
so desperately needed during the spring surge, from ventilators and N-95 respirators to gowns, face masks and face shields.
She added, “God willing, we will look back at this time of crisis and ask what we did to help. We want to be able to say we did the best we could in supporting our health care workers.”
A number of other donors rose to the Cunningtons’ challenge, helping Beaumont stay on track during the darkest days of the crisis. The availability of resources through the COVID-19 Response Fund allowed Beaumont to be able to acquire materials and equipment as they
became available — a signi cant challenge with so many other health care systems in the country competing for scarce resources.
Without ventilators and personal protective equipment, Beaumont’s clinicians could not have provided the outstanding care they did while working to protect the health and wellbeing of caregivers and uninfected patients at the same time.
The willingness of Laurie and Tom Cunnington to reach out to Beaumont, its patients and caregivers during an historic time of need symbolizes the incredible outpouring of support that took place this year — and shows what an impact coordinated philanthropy can have in solving problems and ultimately saving lives.
“Tom and Laurie were among the rst donors to reach out to us and ask, ‘how can we help’ but they were not the last, thanks in part to their inspiring outreach to others,” says John Fox, Beaumont Health president and CEO. “So many of our longtime friends and supporters took it upon themselves to do whatever they could to help our frontline clinicians and — in turn — protect the lives of their loved ones, friends, neighbors, employees and communities.”
Thanks to the support of several major donors, a new clinical study aimed at treating COVID-19 patients with two common drugs — naltrexone and ketamine — is underway, led by Drs. Carl Lauter, Annas Aljassem and Matthew Sims.
Applebaum Family Philanthropy and Suzanne and Deborah Tyner as well as a number of other generous community members joined together to help launch this important research study in early May.
The researchers behind SINK COVID-19, or the Study of Immunomodulation using Naltrexone and Ketamine for COVID-19, are hoping to find new treatments for the virus that are easily available and affordable. Ideally, these treatments would help halt the progression of the disease in patients with mild cases prior to the need for ventilators and would provide a rescue treatment for patients with severe cases of the virus.
“With data in hand, we can determine the full effectiveness of these medications and whether they provide a viable — and immediate — method of care for patients in desperate need,” said Dr. Carl Lauter, director of allergy and immunology at Beaumont Health. “We are so thankful to our philanthropic partners whose support is allowing us to gather this data.”
Research has shown that COVID-19 does the most damage when the body accelerates its immune response too quickly and dramatically, causing what’s called a cytokine storm. During a cytokine storm, the body creates an excessive immune response that destroys healthy lungs and causes acute respiratory distress, along with multiorgan failure. The kidneys, liver and circulatory system have all been shown to be greatly affected in severe cases of COVID-19.
The goal of Beaumont’s SINK COVID-19 research study is to better control and suppress that cytokine storm by using low-dose naltrexone and ketamine. The study will determine if these two repurposed drugs can better
regulate patients’ immune systems and prevent these catastrophic cytokine storms. If proven successful, the use of these drugs could make an enormous difference in patient outcomes, in our community and beyond.
Currently, low-dose naltrexone is used most commonly to treat multiple sclerosis, autoimmune thyroid diseases and myalgic encephalopathy. It has been shown to bind to immune cells, thus making it a valuable tool in controlling the body’s immune response. With COVID-19, this medication would ideally be given to patients as soon as possible, before their immune responses begin to accelerate.
Ketamine is most often used as an anesthetic, but also possesses an anti-inflammatory effect similar to, but more powerful than, low-dose naltrexone. This drug works quickly and would be used for patients who are already having an immune overload in an attempt to stop and reverse the reaction.
“I know I speak for all of Beaumont Health when I say we are so deeply grateful for the support of the Applebaum family, the Tyner family, and so many other donors, whose gifts are allowing our extraordinary research team to help discover treatments that greatly diminish the impact of the disease,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Health Foundation.
It took smart, talented and compassionate people to manage the COVID-19 surge earlier this spring, from physicians, nurses and technicians to the security guards greeting sick and worried patients at the emergency center entrance.
The COVID-19 Employee Support Fund was established to honor and provide help to these staff as they put their own lives on hold — and at risk — to help others.
Members of the community responded with overwhelming support, helping alleviate stress for frontline workers’ most pressing needs. And for every gift made, there were dozens of notes and cards from families, cheering caregivers on and letting them know they were appreciated.
“These gifts — and the support of the community — are so incredibly important and thoughtful,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Health Foundation. “Our caregivers continue to put so much on the line to care for our community and support of this fund has been a wonderful way for people to have shown their concern and thanks.”
One of the most important components of the Employee Support Fund involved temporaryhousingfor frontline staff.

Whether sponsoring fundraising events or donating directly to patient programs, Beaumont’s corporate partners have long supported the health system’s mission of compassionate, extraordinary care.
When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in March and the immediate and life-threatening shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) began, these same corporate partners stepped up to ask Beaumont how they could help.
“The willingness of so many business leaders to offer assistance in what was truly the toughest of times meant so much to our doctors, our nurses, all of us,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, Beaumont Health Foundation president. “They took the same skills they used to build their businesses and applied them to solving the problem of PPE supply — and they did it quickly and with incredible generosity.”
Among the rst organizations to contact Beaumont was the team at Barton Malow, the South eld-based commercial and industrial construction rm led by the Maibach family, longtime supporters of Beaumont programs. On March 26, 2020, after a urry of email communications, a delivery of more than 350 desperately needed high-end masks and respirators along with nearly 300 Tyvek coveralls were delivered to Beaumont and immediately put to use.

The goal of most charitable foundations is to save and improve lives –and that is exactly what a number of national, regional and local foundations did in recent months by making significant grants to Beaumont Health to address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The response of our community partners, both near and far, has been nothing short of incredible,” said Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Health Foundation. “The compassion and generosity shown truly underscores how much all nonpro ts have in common in our efforts to save and improve lives, especially during this unprecedented chapter in our history.”
The Ford Motor Company Fund was one of the rst foundations to reach out and provide a gift to the Beaumont COVID-19 Response Fund, which has been used to meet Beaumont’s most urgent COVID-19related needs, whether securing ventilators or purchasing the personal protective equipment that keeps our clinicians safe.
“The doctors, nurses and medical professionals at Beaumont and hospitals across southeast Michigan have been a rock-solid line of defense serving our community during this pandemic,” said Lisa Gonzalez, manager of the Ford Motor CompanyFund. “We’re pleased to provide a grant for personal protectiveequipment to help keep them safe during this difficult time.”
Longtime Beaumont Health partner Masco, based in Taylor, Mich., also provided a gift to this important fund, part of its overall commitment to corporate citizenship and giving back to strengthen regional communities.
“Masco is proud to support our community with critical funding during the COVID-19 crisis. Masco’s donation represents the immense gratitude, respect and admiration we have for Beaumont’s entire staff and the tireless work they have done and continue to do to ensure the health and safety of our community,” said Sue Sabo, director of communications and corporate giving for Masco.
Foundations also were inspired to provide support directly to our frontline caregivers through Beaumont’s COVID-19 Employee
Support Fund, which helps staff with needs that have arisen as a direct result of their work. The PNC Foundation provided a generous gift to secure hotel rooms for doctors, nurses and technicians during the surge, allowing them to protect their family members, friends or roommates from potential transmission.
The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation included Beaumont in its gift to support frontline health care workers at 18 different hospitals in Michigan and New York. “As our communities struggle during this time of uncertainty and crisis, our team felt it was vital to act immediately to provide funding and relief to groups and organizations within our focused giving areas, and larger collaborative funds supporting our regions,” said David Egner, president and CEO, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, at the time of the award announcement in April.
The United Way for Southeastern Michigan provided signi cant support for Beaumont’s COVID-19 efforts through two grant awards this year. Their COVID-19 Community Response Fund provided direct support for Beaumont frontline providers who were hardest hit by the nancial challenges of the pandemic. They also partnered with Oakland County to fund new liaison positions and technology at Beaumont’s
Oakland County hospitals to improve communication between critically ill COVID-19 patients who were isolated, their families and healthcare providers.
One of the region’s most generous and relied upon organizations, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, also was quick to step up with donors and staff designating support to Beaumont to address “health care workers’ unexpected expenses due to COVID-19.” As the organization noted on their website, “As we learn how best to address this evolving pandemic, the impact of regional collaboration and local contributions has never been more apparent.”
Other foundations have sought to partner with Beaumont’s renowned Research Institute in an effort to better understand the spread of the virus and potentially develop new treatments. Hearst Foundations, based in New York and California, was among those who donated generously to Beaumont’s Serological Testing Study which is helping to determine the level and length of protection that antibodies may offer against the disease.
The Hearst Foundations grant was part of its $50 million emergency funding response to COVID-19, which was distributed to more than 100 medical, humanitarian and cultural organizations in the United States, with Beaumont joining organizations such as Johns Hopkins in earning support.
The partnerships created through these generous grants and the foundations that provided them will continue to make a difference in the months ahead as health systems like Beaumont continue to meet the challenges of COVID-19.
Beaumont Health has always known that our Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) supporters are something special. These corporations, foundations and individuals are committed to helping kids of every age and background overcome disease, injury and illness, and to ensuring Beaumont Children’s remains at the forefront of research, education and outreach programs.
When the COVID-19 outbreak hit Michigan, our CMN supporters rose to the occasion in an extraordinary way by taking their support even further. Almost as soon as cases began to rise, Marriott International responded by donating more than 38,300 N-95 masks, 29,100 disposable thermometers, more than 1,000 pairs of gloves and 1,000 surgical masks. In the early days of the crisis, when health systems across the country were facing shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), this gift played a crucial role in helping Beaumont respond to the virus.
“Marriott has been a proud partner of the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals since 1983. When we found the masks and disposable thermometers in storage, it was right around the time we were hearing there was a shortage of masks at our local hospitals,” said Karen Hedden, director of sales and marketing for Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. “I was so excited to call Beaumont and share we had masks to donate. They came to pick them up the next day. Watching the truck drive away knowing they were on their way to help the children at Beaumont was such a great moment!”
CMN partners also provided support in a variety of other ways. In addition to providing 7,000 N-95 masks and 3,000 surgical masks, Speedway donated 3,500 snacks

It is often said that moments of crisis reveal our true character. Given the outpouring of support Beaumont has received since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our present circumstances are no exception. Many of the contributions to Beaumont’s COVID-19 Response Fund came from our existing network of donors and partners, but some came from new and unexpected sources: generous young people, rallying to help others.
In the midst of Michigan’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order, Dave Tuer and his son, Matthew, found themselves unable to visit their local barbershop. As their hair and the stay-at-home orders grew longer, they were faced with a relatable dilemma: resign themselves to shaggy heads or attempt a do-it-yourself haircut. Ultimately, they decided to take matters into their own hands, giving each other short, practical quarantine cuts. “I think he did a better job than I did,” Dave joked to WDIV Local 4 News.
But it didn’t end there. Matthew challenged his hockey teammates to participate as well. As more and more friends joined in, Matthew had another idea. Why not donate $10 per DIY haircut? As for the recipient of his fundraising efforts, Matthew immediately thought of the dedicated health care workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 ght.
That kindness meant the world to the caregivers at Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills, where the funds were directed. “Our team has been working so hard to take care of the patients and the community, as well as themselves,” said David Claeys, president of Beaumont, Farmington Hills, at the time of the donation. “It’s just overwhelming for them at times.”
Ultimately, Matthew raised upwards of $3,000 to benefit the Beaumont doctors, nurses and hospital staff helping patients overcome this unique virus. Claeys got the chance to thank the Tuers in person when the family personally delivered 250 sandwiches, 250 bags of chips and 400 bottled waters to the care team.

The need for personal protective equipment to safeguard caregivers became headline news across the country when COVID-19 began to spread throughout the United States this past spring. Beaumont was no different as the need for PPE soon skyrocketed.
When word went out that Beaumont was in need of personal protective equipment and other supplies to help care for the enormous surge of COVID-19 patients, the community rallied in profound and substantial ways.
Working with the Beaumont Health Foundation and its core of donors and business leaders, Beaumont’s supply chain team was able to access new avenues for equipment and supplies. And the need was dramatic — at the peak of the surge, Beaumont’s hospitals went through 50,000 N-95 masks — or roughly a year’s worth — in just seven days.
When donors and community members were asked to donate any available supplies they might have to the health system, the response overwhelmed all expectations. “We opened up for donations at the Beaumont Service Center on a Sunday and that day, we discovered a few collection bins would not suf ce,” said Fisher. “We quickly pivoted to larger racks and needed additional oor space in the lobby.” And those donations continued to stream in for days and weeks, throughout the spring and early summer.
Additionally, a number of corporate donors and sponsors stepped in to begin manufacturing and repurposing PPE and other supplies for Beaumont. Jordan Katzman and the team at SmileDirectClub donated face shields while Petoskey Plastics and Duro-Last retooled their plants to make PPE. Detroit’s automakers, including Ford, GM and FCA, as well as construction companies such as Barton Malow repurposed their own supplies and donated them to Beaumont, including masks and hospital gowns.
“We became a high-performing team focused on one goal: to not run out of anything,” said Fisher. Part of that focus was on ensuring that quality standards were met, which meant vetting organizations and testing products. “We needed to vet new sources and vendors and scrub through multiple vendors and emails to nd a few ‘gems’ that materialized into actual stock.”
“The rst weekend we were at the Beaumont Service Center’s Emergency Operation Center, I engaged with (the Foundation team) to strategize on how we could enlist support from this tremendous group of supporters,” said Melanie Fisher, senior vice president for corporate supply chain at Beaumont. “The Foundation helped us make connections to projects, products and equipment we needed funding for and carried that message out to the donors. We worked in collaboration to ensure the Foundation and its members were aware of what we were doing, how our curve was quickly climbing, and we needed their help.”
As the COVID-19 situation continues and preparations are underway for other potential surges in the future, Fisher and her team remain grateful for the incredible response of vendors, corporations and individuals who called, sent supplies and even turned up at Beaumont’s headquarters with supplies in hand, all wanting to help save lives.
“The outpouring from the community was overwhelming,” Fisher said. “We were — and are — so fortunate to have that support and loyalty for our frontline teams at Beaumont.”
For better or worse, the COVID-19 pandemic has many people thinking about the future and wondering how they can make a difference, with many taking a second look at their estate plans, income needs and philanthropic legacies.
Tax law changes, the uncertain economic environment, and low interest rates have added complexities to charitable gift planning. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act doubled the standard deduction and doubled the estate tax exemption. The importance of the charitable income tax bene ts was elevated because more estates became exempt from estate taxes.
The 2019 SECURE Act changed rules for required minimum distributions (RMDs) from retirement plan assets including eliminating the use of the “stretch” IRA, which had allowed RMDs from inherited IRAs to be spread over the lives of younger generations.
The 2020 CARES Act added an “above the line” $300 charitable gift tax deduction and increased the deduction limit for itemizers to 100 percent of adjusted gross income for cash charitable gifts.
The simplest way to satisfy your philanthropic goals is a gift through a will or trust (i.e., a bequest) that takes affect after your lifetime. Bequests are easy to accomplish, and their bene ts include:
• No lifetime implications because your assets remain available, if needed; and
• Flexibility because the gift can be changed.
Volatile nancial markets have increased interest in life income
gifts, such as a charitable gift annuity (CGA) and a charitable remainder trust (CRT). These can provide payments to you or a loved one for life or a term of years. After the life of the income bene ciary or the term of years, the remainder can be used to support Beaumont in a manner designated by you.
These types of gifts are great if you want to make a signi cant impact and, perhaps, are retired or approaching retirement and are concerned about the nancial future. Other bene ts include:
• A charitable income tax deduction in the year of creation;
• Flexibility as to the amount and timing of the lifetime payments; and
• Ability to use appreciated assets to avoid/defer tax on capital gains.
A testamentary CGA or CRT can be used to ameliorate the effects of the elimination of the “stretch” IRA. Retirement plan assets can be used to fund, tax-free, a CGA or CRT at death, and the annuity payments or trust distributions can be spread over the lifetimes of younger bene ciaries.
The current low interest rate environment is conducive to certain split-interest charitable gift tools that involve larger scale gifts and wealth transfers. The low I.R.S. discount rate can generate signi cant tax bene ts from the creation of a non-grantor charitable
lead annuity trust (CLAT) or a retained life estate (RLE).
A CLAT is the reverse of a CRT because an annuity is paid to a charity (i.e., Beaumont) for a term of years and the remainder reverts to your family. A $2 million, 20-year CLAT, paying Beaumont a 5 percent annual annuity and earning 8 percent a year, could produce:
• Total payments to Beaumont of $2 million;
• Remainder value to your family of approximately $4.7 million; and
• Estate tax savings of approximately $2.9 million.
With an RLE, you as the donor retain an interest in your home as the “life tenant” for your life or a term of years. Beaumont receives the property after your life or the term of years. An RLE gift of a home, by a donor age 75, with a value of $1 million could produce a current year income tax deduction of approximately $850,000.
