AUTUMN ANNOUNCEMENTS

uring the recent CoreNet Global Summit in Chicago, the opening session was led by positive psychology expert and author Shawn Achor, who shared with us the hidden factor in human happiness potential: a conscious mindset shift. In his book Big Potential he discusses how our greatest competitive advantage is a happy and engaged brain. We can directly access this “happiness advantage” through social connection - something our chapter is very good at - and by scanning your environment each day for something new you’re grateful for.
Especially during this time of year, I invite you all to look for those new opportunities to connect and feel gratitude. We’ve accomplished a significant amount in the past few months and we deserve to celebrate. Please take two minutes out of your day to let someone know what you appreciate or want to celebrate about them.
In the spirit of celebrating, I’d like to acknowledge the contributions our New England chapter has made to the Corporate Real Estate industry and community at large. In support of our Community Reinvestment Committee’s philanthropic and volunteer initiatives, we are thrilled to have a continued partnership with The Boys & Girls Club of Boston. We exceeded our fundraising goal by 78% at our 21st Annual Charitable Golf Tournament and upwards of $50,000 over the last several years.
We’re continuing to bring the best value in content and professional and organizational development opportunities across the industry, with our Career
DStrategies + Development (CS+D) and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Committees strategizing on programs aimed at providing enhanced networking opportunities and career advice to The Commercial Real Estate Success Training (CREST) alumni, who have recently completed this paid internship program, sponsored by the New England Chapter, designed to support early career professionals who are historically underrepresented in corporate and commercial real estate in the New England region. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to mentor and make an impact in these talented students’ careers - applications are now open for the 2023 internship program on our website!
Keep an eye out for more great content coming out of our Think Tank which will bring together experts in neurodiversity, behavioral science, life science, venture capitalists and more who are thinking about the workplace and real estate differently.
It brings so much fulfillment when diverse companies, individuals and communities understand the true value of what CoreNet brings to the table, and all the better when the New England Chapter is able to drive impactful strategic initiatives and conversations on behalf of the CoreNet Global organization. I look forward to continued collaboration and celebration in person at our upcoming events into the New Year as well as at the Eastern Regional Symposium (ERS) next June 5-6th, 2023 in Washington, DC.
President, CoreNet Global New England Chapter Vice President of Marketing | Partner J. Calnan & Associates
From November 1-3, 2022 the New England Chapter, among many others from across the globe, met in Chicago to engage in insightful conversations about the future of work, how we approach it and where it happens. There were abundant opportunities for networking and learning, with sessions focused around the alignment of sustainability and diversity goals within the workplace and built environment. On the final day, we celebrated at the Awards Recognition Dinner our chapter being a finalist for Large/Mega Chapter of the Year.
One of the presenters in the Innovation Learning Theater was Liz Powers and real estate leaders at Google and PwC who took us on a journey about why art is good for business and how her platform ArtLifting fulfills the “S” in ESG, especially for the return to office. CoreNet New England is working on partnering with ArtLifting as a platform for artists that have traditionally been underrepresented in the contemporary art market. Corporate Real Estate companies participate by purchasing the artists’ work which helps to build a culture of inclusion and innovation through representing ArtLifting artists in their spaces. Stay tuned for more details on this program!
Amy Lalezari, Education Committee Co-Chair & Partner, Director of Client Solutions at Environments at Work shares her key takeaways from this year’s Summit .
The theme for the Summit this year was “Putting it Together.” With over 2,700 people in attendance, this event was full of energy, and it showed me that many of us are seeking answers on how we fit together. People, Place, and Purpose were woven into various
programs for the Summit. I attended sessions focused on integrating ESG and DEI strategies into business norms, infusing hospitality into the workplace, and leveraging physical and virtual elements through experiential design. The common thread I heard throughout was the power of the Human Element. Whether we connect in a physical space or host a happy hour in the Metaverse, it comes back to the People and how they engage in a Place with Purpose.
The opening session with Shawn Achor, an author and speaker known for his advocacy of positive psychology and self-made “happiness researcher,” was contagious. At one point Shawn shared a story from his book Big Potential about lightning bugs with a simple message: “The more you help people find their light, the brighter you all will shine.” His statement grabbed me as we attempt to seek a more empathetic and inclusive future. Shawn was a dynamic speaker with impact; I bought his book for my entire team online during lunch break. I also think everyone left this session smiling!
Experimentation seems to be accelerating. There were discussions about pilots, living labs, co-creation, and ways our industry leaders are exploring to evolve their workplace strategies that will support an untethered workforce. I would call the vibe “cautiously excited” with an openness to create a path forward, even if
the outcomes are unclear. In the Coca-Cola Company and Space Matrix session, there was a quote from the Coca Cola leadership “We will Learn our way to Hybrid.” I just loved that!
There has been much ideation around the “Return to Office”, but in this session we explored the idea of a “Return to People” with a focus on people as the new amenity. The team at BHDP Architecture and the GSA hosted a “People is Place” Co-Creation Lab, an exercise around the physical, virtual, social + cultural elements that impact people in the office and remotely. People make the place; without the people, it is just a space.
This was my first Summit, and I left energized. As the co-chair of the Education Committee, I experienced many relevant and layered topics we will dive deeper into as we build the upcoming 2023 program calendar. Working in collaboration with other chapter committees to leverage our shared experience and expertise and provide robust content and conversation within our CoreNet Community!
The Programs Committee was proud to gather the CNGNE community at Analog Devices’ Corporate Headquarters in Wilmington, MA on October 19th. Thanks to our sponsors – Baker Design Group, Lee Kennedy, WB Engineering, Scalora, Teknion and Office Works – we celebrated Analog Devices' 40-Year campus evolution with a collaborative project presentation and facilities tour of real estate re-imagined!
Thank you to those who donated to the Community Reinvestment Committee’s Cradles to Crayons Clothing Drive, helping us combat clothing insecurity in Massachusetts. More event photos can be found here.

There is no better way to “do well by doing good” than becoming a mentor to a 2023 CREST (Commercial Real Estate Success Training) Intern. For those that do not know by now, CREST is a local organization that provides meaningful summer internships (JuneAugust 2023) along with personal and professional skills development to highly motivated and talented college students who have been historically underrepresented in the real estate industry. All CREST Interns are given CoreNet Global student memberships and many have joined us at ERS and Summit over the years.
Our Career Strategies + Development (CS+D) and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) Committees are strategizing on programs aimed at providing enhanced networking opportunities and career advice to The Commercial Real Estate Success Training (CREST)
alumni, who have recently completed this paid internship program, sponsored by the New England Chapter, designed to introduce historically underrepresented early career professionals in corporate and commercial real estate industries in the New England region.
The CoreNet Global New England Chapter is a continued CREST “Champion”, which acknowledges our commitment and financial support of this program. We are offering four sponsor firms the opportunity to participate in the CREST Internship program during summer 2023 at a 50% reduced cost. if you are interested in being a mentor next summer, please reach out to Aby Bhat (abhilasha.bhat@stvinc.com) or Russell Chin (russell.chin@libertymutual.com).
The Young Leaders Professional Development Program 2022 Cohort held their Final Presentation, ‘Building Community in a Hybrid Workplace,’ on Tuesday, November 15th at the Toast Headquarters. The panel discussed how to bridge the gap between leadership and employees, and between expectations

In September, we kicked off our Leadership 2.0 Professional Development Program, with Executive Coach Vonda Mills leading the class through their Caliper strengths and personality assessment followed by a practical seminar where the students identified their areas of opportunities and created accountability within the Leadership 2.0 peer group. We look forward to watching how these professionals grow in this seven month program, learning from industry leaders with expertise ranging from bestselling authors to Heads of Global Real Estate. With topics including effective communication and equitable leadership, we couldn’t be more excited for this year’s cohort.

The University Relations committee’s 2022-2023 campus road show is underway. The committee is visiting Boston’s key colleges and universities to raise awareness of careers in corporate real estate and, hopefully, engage more students and young professionals in CoreNet. The first event was held at Boston University on October 18th, with a planned event at Boston College on November 17th and visits to Wentworth, Suffolk, Northeastern, and Tufts in early 2023. The committee is also in discussion with more local universities to expand on campus engagements and facilitate a central event for students from across the Boston area.
In addition to these visits, the committee sponsored Giuliana Iavarone of Bentley University to attend the Global Summit in Chicago and welcomed three other students from Wentworth Institute of Technology at the conference.
James Mandeville is a founding member and co-chair of the NE Chapter’s University Relations initiative. With this committee, James manages programs for students at local universities that introduce them to the CRE profession. In his nearly 10 years of working in the CRE industry, he’s played an integral part in developing and implementing initiatives that positively impact our chapter, industry, and the next generation of leaders.
