Life is short – Have a cake fight! This month the wedding bells were ringing and we discovered an industry of dedicated and hard working people. Talking with leaders in this multi million-dollar industry, it became apparent that this was one of the hardest industries to be in. The tireless hard work and dedication that goes into even the simplest of weddings is truly amazing and, for the most part, it’s the small businesses in this industry that make it happen. Individually, they may be considered a “small” business. However, when they come together, work together and support each other, they are one truly powerful and talented industry family. I would like to make a special mention to Mel & Matt from Sweet Ideas for your amazing “Cake Fight” concept. I have never had so much fun on a shoot before. It was nice for the world to stop for a few hours and throw cake, especially at Norina! I also can’t forget to mention the secret admirer proposing to his girlfriend in this issue. We are so excited for you and look forward to hearing how it went!!!

DE FACTO: not a clear cut issue Being considered in a de facto relationship seriously alters rights and entitlements of individuals after a relationship breakdown… but how do you know if you’re a de facto couple? Many are aware that living together for a period of time will most likely define them as de facto. However, other living arrangements could also indicate a de facto relationship. For example, you and your partner spend equal time between your respective homes, or, whilst you haven’t “officially” moved in together, you spend all your weekends at your partner’s house. Situations like these could lead to claims being made against you if the relationship ends. Whilst there are a number of factors considered in determining the status of a couple, our advice is to be mindful of how couples conduct their lives together, to help ensure they are not deemed de facto without making an active choice to do so. These include; • Consider separate bank accounts and financial independence; • Be aware of the possible financial consequences before buying any assets or borrow money jointly – such as the purchase of real property; and

Cathy COVER, senior associate. Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist – Family Law

“Rent” arrangements between couples may not be the safeguard you expect. In cases where you share a bedroom, the court is unlikely to accept this as evidence of the relationship not being a “de facto relationship”. On the contrary, the payment of rent can later become a direct financial contribution to the house.

YOUR SELF MANAGED SUPER SPECIALISTS

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL

SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

Self Managed Superannuation is it for you? With Self Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) becoming more popular, what are the benefits of having one? Trustees (and therefore the members) have more control over their investment decisions and one area in particular is the purchase of direct property and being able to purchase real business property from members and other related parties. This can provide a number of taxation advantages for the member who is able to transfer the property into their own SMSF. • There is investment flexibility by being able to take advantage of market timing when buying and selling investments. • Taxation benefits that apply to all superannuation funds can be structured by buying and selling assets at times to maximise the tax benefits to the fund. • Creditor protection for assets that are owned by the SMSF but leased to a business. Only assets that have been transferred to a superfund with the aim to defeat creditors in the event of bankruptcy don’t have this protection. • Much greater flexibility in relation to estate planning, such as younger members of the family becoming members of the fund so certain assets can be preserved in the fund. • Cost savings, once a member has about $150,000 - $200,000 of accumulative benefits then the fees become less than in a retail superannuation fund. This is taken from average data of course and may vary from fund to fund. So with so many advantages what are the disadvantages? Well, the same regulations that apply to retail superannuation funds apply to SMSF and that means the trustees need to understand the regulations and restrictions because heavy penalties apply if the trustees make a mistake. Apart from the penalties that may apply, if the fund is found to be non-complying then the total of the fund assets less any undeducted contributions made, will be taxed at 45% including all the income in the year it was found to be non-complying. Scary stuff but what about the investments, there is nothing to stop the trustees seeking advice from a financial planner. However, many don’t want to because of a mistrust left behind from incidents like the Storm financial crisis. The laws have been considerably tightened in relation to financial planning because of Storm Financial. These days financial planners have to act in your best interest and prove that you are in a better position after they have done work for you than before. So don’t be scared to seek advice.

At Synergy, we not only specialise in your accounting and tax requirements, we are able to discuss and plan for any self-managed superannuation funds from start up to providing pensions and investment opportunities. To experience the Synergy difference, come in and meet with out friendly team to discuss your self-managed superannuation needs.

Experience the Synergy difference today.

Trustees also need to understand their risk profile as they need to prepare an investment strategy and keep it updated. I have seen many funds with everything invested in one asset class. Of course there is one other alternative and that is a Small Apra Fund (SAF), for those that want more control over their investments but don’t want the responsibility of being a trustee. As with a SMSF only 4 members are allowed but the trustee is an organisation the holds a Registrable Super Entity Licence. There may be investment restrictions not related to super laws but more to do with their approved list of investments. So get advice to see which option suits you best.

What is content marketing? The last thing we need as small business owners is a new form of marketing to get our heads around. We already have so many things on our plate, so the concept of adopting another new marketing strategy can seem painful, but is it? Content Marketing, a phrase coined in recent years, is officially defined as communicating effectively, making connections, engaging your audience, inspiring customer action and providing something of value to your fans or followers, according to Search Engine Journal. Sounds great, but what does that mean? Think about how you consume advertising on a daily basis. Do you tune out when there are advertisements on the television? What about the paper? Are you ad blind? Not intentionally ignoring the advertisements, rather focussing on the news and information? Then there is online. There is an extension for most browsers which enable users to switch ads off altogether! So what is the alternative? Content marketing. Put simply, content marketing enables businesses to be more creative in the way in which they deliver information about their business, products and services. It offers an opportunity for a business to introduce themselves in a different light, almost as a form of entertainment rather than a straight out advertisement.

Enter social media, enabling business owners to now deliver their helpful useful content via another medium. By sharing useful content about your business or service, as well as associated business and services, along with a few quotes and cat videos, people can start to relate to and enjoy your brand. By doing this, they get familiar with your business and the cycle of ‘know, like and trust’ begins. However, this isn’t something that is a one off effort. It must be crafted with consideration and delivered consistently to ensure impact. It won’t happen overnight but... Content you share can also become ‘word of mouse,’ as customers become engaged with your content and then share on your behalf to their network. Think about your reaction to something you viewed in which made you laugh. What do you do? Share it! You want your friends to enjoy a laugh as well! Delightfully, the page it is shared from is carried over and wullah! Word of mouse, or effective content marketing.

Traditional marketing talks at people. Content marketing talks with them. - DOUG KESSLER, VELOCITY

In the hot seat We put Naomi in the Hot Seat to find out how this superwoman manages love, life and business.

How did you come up with the funky retro styling for the café? A. “I knew that I wanted a retro / vintage

style. One that looked like it had been there for years. I had worked with Jo Sweeney for many years with the park and I knew her background as an antique picker and her passion for design, so it made sense to ask for her help. She was incredible in helping to pull the entire look together with an array of funky pieces.”

What is your favourite family holiday spot? A. We love to travel as a family, with a trip to Borneo a couple of years ago, then a month in Colorado last year to give the kids their first snow holiday. It’s my 50th next year so we’re planning to spend a month in NYC to celebrate! Locally, we love to picnic at a hidden creek or get amongst the beautiful locations throughout the Whitsundays.”

What is a ‘must try’ at the Fat Frog? A. “Our coffee is sensational. It was a long

process to choose the perfect blend. We went with Campos because of their passion for training and quality. It was one of the best decisions I made. The result is a consistently amazing coffee every time.”

Naomi McKinnon It’s an Australian love story worthy of its own soap opera and, in fact, the tale of how Naomi McKinnon found love in the Whitsundays once featured on the Today Show. Since leaving school, Naomi lived a corporate life in Adelaide, working for multi-national advertising agencies. In her early 30’s she took six months off to travel around Australia to recharge. Her plan was always to return to her friends and family in Adelaide. However, arriving in Airlie Beach she had an overwhelming sensation of being home. She decided to stay and work for a while, but that while ended up turning into forever when she met the love of her life, Greg, who had offered her a reception position at BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort. She discovered that she loved tourism with a passion, and Greg even more! That was 16 years ago and the couple now have three gorgeous children, 12 year old Jack, 10 year old Josh and 8 year old Molly. They continue to manage BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday together, which Greg and his family have owned since the mid-nineties, while also opening the Fat Frog Beach Café at Cannonvale Beach in September 2013.

What is the ‘furry friends’ concept at the Fat Frog? A. “It’s one thing to be able to take your dog with you to a café. However, we’ve taken it one step further with a Furry Friends menu, featuring tasty pet treats and bowls of water.”

What are your top three ‘must have’ items in your handbag? A. “Phone, phone and phone!” What is your favourite scent? A. “The smell of my children’s freshly washed

hair makes me want to cuddle them to death!”

What is your secret to running two businesses while raising a family? A. “Wine! Haha, seriously though, being

surrounded by the most incredible team of staff who all truly believe our vision gives them the confidence to make their own decisions and allows us the freedom to enjoy precious time with our kids.” www.corelife.com.au 13

A family business well structured A garden full of flowers is like a home full of laughs. It brings constant joy. To transform a blasé backyard into something bloomin’ beautiful, the local team at Structured Earth and Cannonvale Concrete Products can help. Both businesses are owned and operated by locals Lindsey and Levi Deering, who have built a reputation upon creating timelessly picturesque landscapes. Levi was brought up surrounded by plants. Structured Earth can help to transform your garden space into one that suits your lifestyle and brings out your personality, bringing together your ideas with their extensive knowledge, to create stunning spaces to be cherished. His passion for paving, retaining walls, masonry and the opportunity to be further involved in the local building industry led to the purchase of Cannonvale Concrete Products, (CCP). It can supply anything from concrete pipes and pavers to retaining wall blocks and imported stone pavers. LOOKING AT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN BRISBANE?

Self Funded Retiree The Reserve Bank of Australia recently lowered the Cash RaTe to a historical low interest rate of 2.25%

“My Dad was a client of Steve’s for over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.”

One of their main objectives was to stimulate the housing industry, which in turn stimulates the economy and creates employment. A side effect of this is a further increase in house prices especially in capital cities driven by an increase in demand by home buyers and investors. Since the mid 1980’s, when Paul Keating unsuccessfully tried to end the investor incentive of negative gearing, the Federal Government has provided an attractive ongoing tax incentive for investors to create NEW housing. With interest rates at a historical low, we now have a NEW PLAYER increasing demand from investors. The new player is the SELF FUNDED RETIREE.

E T A E CR ALTH X E A W ET V A S

Why should he/she accept a 3% return on $1,000,000 ($30,000) and pay tax of $13,950 for a nett return of $16,050 per annum, when he/she could buy two new homes from me at $500,000 each and get a nett return of $36,000 but after depreciation only pay tax on $24,000 giving him/her an after tax income of $24,840! The clincher, too, is, the value of $1,000,000 sitting in a term deposit is continually being eroded by inflation. Which with housing, his/her capital and income are protected from inflation.

Mortgage Choice’s Graham Bowling said last month’s disappointing consumer sentiment result combined with a recent spate of poor economic data ultimately forced the RBA to take action and cut the cash rate. “According to the latest Westpac Melbourne Institute of Consumer Sentiment Index, confidence grew by just 2.4 per cent in January to 93.2%, meaning pessimists still outnumber optimists by a significant majority,” he said.

At its board meeting earlier today, the Reserve Bank announced it would cut 25 basis points off the already low official cash rate.

And it is not just consumer sentiment that is low at the moment. The latest Monthly Business Survey from National Australia Bank found business confidence is currently sitting well below long run averages. “The survey showed both business confidence and business conditions are sluggish at the moment. Business conditions in particular eased for the second consecutive month, which suggests the economy is currently very patchy with little to no momentum building. With that said, it was largely unsurprising to see the Reserve Bank cut the official cash rate this month.” Mr Bowling said this latest rate cut should encourage many

ASK YOUR SAVVY REAL ESTATE AGENT:

Is now a good time to consider

upgrading to buy a new home? The question you may be pondering “Will it be a wise financial move to do so in the current market we are experiencing in Mackay? “

Some Home Buyers Should Buy Immediately – Why?

If you are a seller who wants to move up to a more expensive home in a down market, now could be the best time. The longer you wait to sell, the lower the price of your current home could fall. If you sell and buy simultaneously, you’ll still be ahead of the game because the price reduction on the higher priced property you wish to upgrade to is likely to be greater than the loss on the sale of your current home.

t n e g a u r o Does y ? p u e r s u mea

Consider the “Loss” on Selling Your Present Home

For example, say your present house is worth $300,000, but because of higher volume of properties on the market in this price range and few buyers, you may need to reduce your price by 10%. So, instead of receiving $300,000, you would get $270,000 and “lose” $30,000.

Consider the “Savings” on Buying Your New Home

If you are planning to move up to a $500,000 house, which is located in the same distressed market, you could probably buy that house at that same 10% discount or $450,000. This would mean you had saved $50,000. 4. Review of Selling and Buying Numbers 1. So you “lost” $30,000 on the sale of your home

Buying now while interest rates are at an all time low, in addition to current lower priced property prices, may also be an advantage, allowing you to afford reducing your loan quicker and allowing you to gain equity sooner. A good strategy is to weigh all pros and cons. Do your research before making the decision to buy or sell. Don’t panic over newspaper headlines. Make an informed decision. Run your own numbers. The place to start is establishing the true value of your current property. Kia Ora! Grab your jandals and togs for a tiki tour to the bach, don’t forget the chilly bin for the hangi! Kiwi’s often sound like they are speaking a whole lot of jibber jabber, but when it comes to talking real estate, Sharon Dewsbury and Andrea Clarke are speaking your language. With more than 25 years of experience between them, not only can they talk the talk, they also walk the walk. Sharon and Andrea both grew up in New Zealand. Sharon comes from a rural farming background close to Mount Egmont in the North Island, whereas Andrea also grew up on a farm in a small South Island town called Ashburton. Andrea originally moved to Sydney in 1983, but found herself moving to Airlie Beach only two weeks later, while Sharon moved to the Whitsundays in 1995. “Andrea and I only met two years ago and hit it off straight away. We decided to work together so we can help our clients even more. Two for the price of one with over 25 years’ experience,” Sharon said. Andrea commented, “Our strength lies in our ability to complement each other as a team. Together we are able to make informed decisions and give clients the best information to suit their options.”

Their passion and experience in real estate spans decades. “My interest in real estate started when I suddenly became a landlord at 23. My real estate career started 15 years ago. During that time I started and sold two well-known real estate agencies. “I joined First National in June 2013 after spending some time travelling.” Sharon said. “My mother was a real estate agent and my grandfather was involved with development of commercial land estates, so I was brought up in the industry. “I entered the world of real estate 10 years ago, starting off as a property manager at First National in Proserpine and then progressing into sales at First National Cannonvale,” Andrea said. As a bonus to both buyers and sellers, Sharon and Andrea run ‘pop-up’ open homes regularly during the week. They have created a Facebook page, ‘I sell Airlie Beach’ and list the open home they will be at that day. This gives sellers great exposure while allowing buyers to view a home in a less rushed environment as opens last at least three hours. Tammy Jeha

Goodalls

Facing school bullies is something many of us face when we’re younger, but Tammy Jeha didn’t let her aggressors dictate the course of her life. Instead, she trained in martial arts, became an Army Reserve recruit and continues to stay in peak physical condition with crossfit. After leaving school, Tammy trained intensively in Muay Thai and Kung Fu. She competed in and won four fights. However, as her skills improved, she realised she was less likely to use her strength as she had learned restraint and discipline and that a true martial artist never strikes in anger. Tammy spent time in Mackay as a young girl but lived mostly in South East Queensland. She adored spare time on the back of a horse or playing a musical instrument. She taught herself how to play the ukulele and the fife, later training with the Australian Academy of Vocal Arts in Brisbane. She joined the Australian Army as a reserve soldier, and was nominated as best recruit during her 45 day basic training course at Kapooka. She joined as a preventative medicine technician, stationed with 2HSB in Enoggera for four years, and one year at 1HSB in New South Wales. “I was so proud of topping the recruit course because it was incredibly physically, emotionally and mentally challenging. The lessons I learned in relation to the importance of team work, understanding the power of your mind, mateship and perseverance have helped me in many areas of my life. It was the hardest yet most rewarding 45 days of my life. “I had many amazing experiences with the Army, such as adventure canyoning, abseiling, rock-climbing and the challenging Caboolture Obstacle Training course,” Tammy said. Tammy lives in Nebo with her husband and young son Eli, working part-time at Goodall’s Motor Group as a Senior Business Manager.

“I’m lucky to be working in a family-oriented business, which allows me to be a business woman as well as a mum. On one occasion while we were having a team photo taken, my 2-yearold son got up to mischief with another workmate’s 3-year-old daughter, and together they flooded the Volkswagen showroom. My boss walked in to discover them jumping in puddles, but being a family man himself he thought it was hilarious and helped to clean up the mess. “We have the most amazing atmosphere at Goodall’s because we are a collection of people who love our jobs. Clients can see that we have fun, and that helps to make the buying experience better,” Tammy said. Tammy is studying law and accounting but finds balance in her life by growing organic vegetables and with regular yoga sessions. She said, “Family is number one. Spending time with my boys is the best way to make the most out of every day.”

a passion for both plants and people. With an active outdoors upbringing, he also loved a game of footy or spending time on the water skiing and fishing.

“We have two boys, 5-year-old Charlie and 1-year-old Tyler. It is very challenging to run two businesses while taking care of two amazing little men, but both our sons and our businesses bring so much joy and reward.

Lindsey was born in Mackay and grew up in Biloela in the Banana shire, inland from Gladstone. The couple met in Brisbane through a friend and decided to move back to the Whitsundays, to start a family and give their children the same kind of lifestyle and upbringing they both had.

Lindsey and her husband, Levi, own Cannonvale Concrete Products, (CCP), and Structured Earth, a landscape contracting businesses which specialises in high-quality residential landscaping projects. “We both have to be quite flexible about how and when we work to manage our family and both businesses. We don’t get to work the typical nine to five day, but when the work is done, we both make time to stop and enjoy normal family life. “We are also blessed with great staff and a supportive family. Without those key people around us, life would be very difficult to juggle. A great team enables us the opportunity to provide exceptional service because we know our staff work just as hard as we do for our clients,” Levi said. Levi went to school in Proserpine and spent most of his spare time helping his parents at their nursery. This is where he developed

Both of their businesses complement each other, and allow Lindsey and Levi to go above and beyond for their clients. “We are continually learning and pushing the boundaries of what can be created. New and exciting products come on the market which allow us to create unique solutions for our clients. We relish in working alongside our clients on any project, big or small, to ensure the finished product is of a high standard,” Levi said. When the couple aren’t working, they are still often in the garden, creating their own slice of paradise and getting their children involved with the project. “We love what we do, so naturally in our spare time we tend to gravitate back toward the garden.” www.corelife.com.au 27

Armed with little more than two suitcases, Sarah Rose left behind her friends and family in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula to discover the Whitsundays. She took a gap year by deferring her degree in Arts majoring in Criminology, putting on hold a career in law to travel and explore Australia’s tropical islands. She initially found her feet by working in a local café, owned by her aunty, before she discovered an opportunity that would launch her career in business and management. Sarah is the events manager for In the Booth Whitsundays, a studio-quality photo booth hire service, famous for getting parties started throughout the Whitsundays and Australia wide! “Norina gave me the opportunity to kick-start my career as the events manager for In the Booth. It’s a career I cherish because I have a natural passion for events,” Sarah said. In the Booth won best photo booth company last year at both the Annual Bridal Industry Awards and WOAE awards. In the Booth

Sarah is very family-orientated and travels back to Victoria frequently to spend time with them. “Family means a lot to me and my mum and dad love any excuse to come visit me in the beautiful Whitsundays” Growing up with two older brothers and a father who played softball and baseball, Sarah had a natural ability for both sports. She starting playing at 8 years old, and by 12 she played for Victoria at the Australian Softball Championships. When she was 16 she hung up her muddy softball cleats and put on satin high heels and began ballroom dancing. “I will always love baseball and softball but I am a girly-girl at heart. I love shopping, heels and a good selfie!” When she’s not helping clients become the life of the party with photo booth hilarity, Sarah likes to relax with her Boxer puppy Romeo or ignite her creativity with an interior design DIY project. Diesel engineer and patisserie chef are about as different as they come when it comes to career choices, but Melissa Kate Tempero is as comfortable with a spanner in her hand as she is with a piping bag. Melissa’s love of baking spans back as far as she can remember. As a young girl growing up in Melbourne, she fondly remembers wearing an oversized apron and shadowing her mum in the kitchen.

Sweet Ideas

Melissa Kate Tempero

“Without mum’s joy and love of baking and her willingness to teach me everything she knew, I would have not found myself where I am today,” she said. Melissa trained in Melbourne at William Angliss College and completed two individual apprenticeships, as a chef and a patisserie chef, the result of eight years of practical and theoretical experience. An itch to travel and spread her wings led Melissa to the Whitsundays, but surprisingly, it wasn’t a spatula and mixing bowl waiting her arrival. She completed her Marine Engine Driver 3 qualification and then went on to work aboard charter boats in various roles. “It didn’t take me very far in cake design, but suppressed those innercogs of intrigue! I soon discovered my professional beckoning was really to be in a kitchen,” Melissa said. Now with 21 years of experience, Melissa’s business, Sweet Ideas, is well-known throughout the Whitsundays and beyond for producing intricately designed occasion cakes and custom-designed wedding cakes, which taste as incredible as they look. Sweet Ideas blend care and expertise into every cake with stylish and elegant design. Its cakes and patisseries are exquisite, meticulously crafted and tailor made to complement every occasion. Working in many signature restaurants has meant that Melissa has catered for some big names, including Sara Jessica Parker, Hugh Jackman and Prince to name a few. She also created a birthday cake for Nicole Kidman during the filming of the movie ‘Australia’ in Bowen. Her most humbling moment was meeting Nelson Mandela. “It was an incredibly awe-inspiring moment. He asked “Are you well?” and I replied with a quiver in my voice, “Yes.” I had a little voice in my head saying “Really that’s all you can say!” A decade or three later, Sweet Ideas is bigger than Melissa had ever envisaged. She commented, “I would like to make special mention to Janelle Casey from the Flower Hut, who has a vast understanding of just what it takes to provide excellence and execution. Janelle has been an instrumental part of our business growth, offering invaluable advice, guidance and unequivocal support, for which I am truly thankful”. “In addition, I would also like to thank Norina from Iconic Bride Photography and Clair and Eddie from the Event Company for their endless words of encouragement and willingness to assist me. “I am very fortunate to be affiliated with such genuine, focused and hardworking individuals.”

Look at her dress Dramatic necklines, off-the-shoulder, vintage colours and loads of tulle have been making an appearance at the spring 2015 bridal fashion week, with wedding dresses now becoming as individual as the brides who wear them. Off-the-shoulder was the number one trend noticed, for a look of sweet and timeless romance. This style is dreamy and supremely figureflattering, great for ladies of all figures. Dramatic necklines also made a prominent appearance, ranging from extremely high to daringly low. High necklines were adorned in sheer lace, while plunging lines were the focal point for a minimalist dress. Double trouble, two-piece numbers and masculine pant suits with a crop-top gave a casual edge to the runway, with more designers adapting red carpet trends into wedding dresses this year. Three for the price of one. Why have one dress when you can have two or three? Many brides are opting for different dresses for the ceremony, reception and after-party, so now designers are adapting this into one interchangeable dress. Add a cape for drama as you walk down the aisle, and then remove a detachable tulle skirt after the formal part of the reception to reveal a sultry party dress. Cool colours are in. To step away from the traditional white, expand your horizon past blush. This year bolder colours were making loud statements, and the result is stunning. Blue featured heavily, but our favourites were the shades of grey! No pun intended.

Colour me married Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2015 is Marsala, and we are in love! “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing,” Pantone proclaimed. The seductive shade of red works as well on the lips as it does in the bridal bouquet. It works well with a royal colour palette of deep blue, yet teamed with rose gold it becomes utterly glamorous. It’s a bold colour for your bridesmaids which will make for dramatic bridal party photos. “Because of its burnished undertones, sultry Marsala is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows, greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in the more vibrant range.” – Pantone Colour Institute.

It’s a nice day for a white wedding! Or not, according to the fashion runway where a range of colours from gold to blue and even mint green gave us a sneak peek of what’s on trend for 2015. Let’s face it. Beer and wine can be boring. It’s the generic combination that everyone expects and it really has no wow-factor. With couples looking to give their receptions a point of difference, signature drinks can create a memorable talking point. Champagne towers – are back in! The great news is they can be adapted to suit your styling. Hot spots to honeymoon Bora Bora, Tahiti There is a reason this pretty Polynesian island is considered one of the most picture perfect paradises in the world to honeymoon. Verdant mountains hide beautiful cascades while pearl-white beaches fringe crystal-clear lagoons. Secluded and seductive, Bora Bora is a glittering jewel in the South Pacific’s French Polynesia region. Romance abounds, with sunset cruises featuring a meal and entertainment; breakfast can be brought to your overwater bungalow by a canoe draped in flowers, or escape to a private beach for a picnic for two.

Monogrammed robes Matching his and her robes with personal monograms, initials, a date or Mr and Mrs.

Comical pillows Spend your first night as husband and wife on pillows, which read “Mr Right” and “Mrs Always Right.”

Where to stay: For beautiful overwater bungalows, try one of the following three romantic resorts. Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort and Spa, Hilton Nui Bora Bora or Le Meridien Bora Bora. All three offer a premium honeymoon experience in what can only be described as heaven on earth. When to travel: Tahiti has similar weather patterns to tropical Queensland, in that its dry winter period is from May to October. Temperatures are cooler during this time, so if you are looking for a bit of heat without the rain then the fringe months of November and April may be your best option. Fairmont Chateau, Lake Louise, Canada Let’s face it, we have enough beautiful beaches in Queensland that we are already spoiled for choice when it comes to tropical beauty, so for a truly unique and romantic honeymoon, try creating snow angels instead of sizzling on the sand. Lake Louise in Canada is breathtaking. Towering chiselled mountains, glaciers and ski resorts, frame turquoise-tinted lakes. The town itself is famous for romantic teahouses and grizzly bears, with a number of romantic and adventurous challenges on offer. Skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice skating will keep you exhilarated during the day, while spa pampering and hot chocolates by an open fire will set the scene for romance at night. What to pack: If you travel to Canada during the winter, you will need an abundance of warm clothes. Ensure your appropriate footwear are waterproof to avoid cold wet feet, and multiple layers of thin Marino wool garments are more effective than large, bulky layers.

Appy Couple The latest trend for a newly engaged couple is to create a beautiful website, to help keep details in check and to create a reference point to keep guests informed. In just a few simple steps, Appy Couple helps you to create your own website and app! Once you are finished with your own personalisation, your guests can download the app. It can centralise RSVP’s and be used as a platform for photo sharing. Best of all, you can control who sees what, so only the members of the bridal party will receive invites to bridal party gatherings, and guests can interact with one another to make connections before the big day.

Belize Framed by Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, Belize offers a rich cultural experience as well as some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. With its Central America location, a honeymoon to this mysterious paradise leads to the opportunity for holiday extensions in both North and South America. Belize is home to the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, and includes world-famous snorkelling and diving locations such as the Blue Hole. If the beach bores you, then there is always the jungle and Maya Mountains, rich in ancient ruins, remnants of bygone days as part of the greater Maya kingdom. Must do: Discover ancient Mayan architecture on an excursion through Belize’s exotic landscapes. Make your way to the Lamanai ruins, one of the most famous sights in Belize. Accessible only by water and a brief hike, this adventure is an experience not to be missed.

Winter White Clean and classic, white blooms with green stems are timeless, and becoming more popular as brides opt to ditch the white dress. Lilies and white roses are the preferred choice for pearly white bouquets. Wild and Rustic To complement the trend in casual farm and barn themed weddings, the flowers to match are those that look as though they have been hand-picked from a vibrant field of wildflowers. From paddock to posy, these bright, vibrant and rugged bouquets are becoming all the rage.

Hottest Hits for walking down the aisle On trend this season is making the old new again. Take a classic by Elvis or The Beetles and look for a modern acoustic version. Even better, if you are musically minded, record your own version of a song that has meaning to you. OUR TOP 5 All of Me – John Legend. The romance of a piano with John’s silky smooth voice, lyrics to die for and a consistent tone and tempo. I Choose You - Sara Bareilles A sweet and upbeat tune with super cute lyrics. XO – Beyonce Beyonce at her best! Lovey dovey lyrics with a little bit of fun, slightly more up-tempo than other options, but it also gives you the option of signing ‘XO’ as you’re walking up the aisle. Let’s be Still – The Head and the Heart Old-school voices, like The Beetles but with a modern vibe. The lyrics ‘Let’s be still’ reflecting that you want life to be like this forever. Christine Perri – A Thousand Years Simply gorgeous. Soft but strong, perfect for strolling down the aisle matched with lyrics to melt every heart in the room.

Planning the perfect wedding can be difficult, time consuming and not to mention stressful! At Beautiful Beach Weddings, we understand that you have a life to live beyond wedding styling. We specialise in beautiful wedding styling for all settings, to save you time, money and a whole lot of unwanted stress. As a franchise of the multi award-winning style company Beautiful Weddings, our ceremony styling product range is exclusive to our company and is designed by our company founder, Nicole Ritchie. Motivated and creative, we love nothing more than to bring your vision to life. Whitsunday franchise owners, Felicity Rhodes and Kim Dobson, make themselves personally available to brides for anything they may require. “We service all areas from Bowen to Sarina, including Airlie Beach, the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach. organised which was really special for us,” Laine said.

Newlyweds, Geoff and Laine Appleton used Beautiful Beach Weddings to style their Airlie Beach wedding.

“When it came time to place each other’s rings on our fingers, Donna, our lovely celebrant, passed our eldest daughter the rings. I think everyone was a bit shocked from what they saw as Laine’s ring was a $2 lolly machine ring that we got before coming, and mine was much the same!

The couple decided to incorporate a cruise from South Australia with their wedding, and used the first stop, Airlie Beach, for their wedding destination.

“Laine and I had a chuckle to ourselves as we knew our rings were not ready in time to take with us on the cruise, so we enjoyed the laugh we got from our toy rings,” Geoff said.

“We chose Airlie because of how beautiful and tranquil the surrounds are. We knew our girls would love the beach and the ocean, so we knew it would be the perfect choice.

“Much appreciation goes out to Felicity from Beautiful Beach Weddings. What an amazing job her and her team did on setting up exactly what we had dreamt of!”

“The morning of the wedding we were set to disembark the cruise ship to go to shore. Our tender boat came to pick us up and take us to shore. It was a beautiful double deck luxury catamaran that the cruise ship had

Those who choose to sail with Whitsunday Rent A Yacht are promised the height of romance, with hypnotizing white-sand beaches, tranquil sunsets and treasured, romantic memories all wrapped into one. After all, why watch the sunset from a beach, when you can watch it from the deck of your own private Yacht? “I think there is nothing more romantic that sitting on a secluded beach or the deck of your boat with nobody else around and popping the question,” Marketing Manager, Joscelyn O’Keefe said.

On the 20th May 2014 Richie and I experienced the most wonderful day of our lives, in front of 2 of our closest friends we declared our love for each other with the exchanging of our wedding vows. Aboard a Perry 43 catamaran named Catnap, we sailed around Shute Harbour, skippered by John from Whitsunday Rent A Yacht while our ceremony took place, the team from Wray were just fantastic, their friendliness, knowledge and help ensured our day was the most magical day we have ever experienced. We would highly recommend Whitsunday Rent A Yacht to anyone seeking a wedding or holiday in the magnificent Whitsunday Islands.

Take a step back from the frenzied madness of weddings and just imagine saying, “I do” on your own private yacht, as you float above the Great Barrier Reef with your closest family and friends gathered around to celebrate.

With discounts given to couples who choose to come back and use the services again, there should be only one more important question left to ask – and it’s not to us! www.rentayacht.com.au • 1800 075 000

“We were truly blessed to have Norina as our photographer. We met her only three days before the wedding and from the first 15 minutes she understood exactly what we were about as

“We wanted to have fun, relax and enjoy the day. Her professional yet fun and adventurous personality allowed us to get just that! The energy she exudes for photography was out of this world and definitely allowed us to enjoy the whole experience, while also knowing we would not be disappointed with the photos. “By the end of our location shoot, Norina was literally in the ocean shoes on, fully clothed, pony tail being swished about by the waves on the shore line because “she could just not miss this shot” of us on the rocks with the sun setting behind us! If that does not show a love for your profession I’m not sure what does! “We cannot thank her enough for allowing us to muck around, have fun and just be ourselves through the entire day.” Introducing Mr and Mrs Melton How did your husband propose to you? “We were on holiday in Phuket and decided to venture out around the islands for a day of snorkelling, swimming and adventure. After lunch on Phi Phi island, we went for a walk along the beach which just happened to be completely free of anyone one other than us. “Ian walked away while I was writing ‘I love you in the sand’ (complete dork I know) and when he came back to the water’s edge where I was, he got down on one knee and presented a ring thatched together by him from a palm leaf off the nearby trees asking me to marry him.”

44 www.corelife.com.au

Tell us about the dress… “I co-designed my dress with Katie from Louie Col designs in Perth..... I was looking for a unique dress that brought together all the different options that I loved in dresses that I had tried on, but something that was ‘me’. I felt like a princess on that day! I wouldn’t have changed anything about my dress!” What song did you walk down the aisle to? “Stuck on you - Meiko. I wanted something fun and upbeat that made me smile every time I heard the song. Whilst being romantic I didn’t want to be balling my eyes out walking down the aisle. The lyrics encompass everything I felt when I thought about marrying Ian. I now have this song set in my phone for when Ian calls.” Did you exchange traditional vows or did you both write your own? “We wrote our own. Ian and I were 15 when we started dating, so whilst thanking him for helping to make me the person I am today, I thanked him for showing me how to use a washing machine and for teaching me not to put alfoil in microwaves...” What was something unique about your wedding? Two days after our wedding day, we treated all of our wedding guests to a private charter on Cruise Whitsundays catamaran, Camira. We wanted to thank our guests for travelling all the way from Perth and further abroad to Airlie Beach but also show them the beauty of the Whitsundays and why it holds such a special place in mine and Ian’s hearts. It just topped off what was the best week of our lives to be with everyone and continue the celebration.

Any funny hens / bucks stories you would like to share? “Richard had to come home from his buck’s party early as he contracted pneumonia! Not being ones to miss out on a good time, his friends ensured they kept the party going until the end without him!” What was your favourite photo moment? “We were lucky enough to be beside the beach as the sun was setting and it made for the most spectacular backdrop.” What is your most memorable wedding day moment? “Besides the joy and excitement I felt to be marrying my best friend, I also remember feeling overwhelmed and touched that so many of our relatives and friends had travelled to be with us on our special day.” “Iconic Bride were fantastic to work with from start to finish. “Their level of professionalism is second to none and they really do take on board all your ideas and special requests. I was so impressed at how smoothly the photography side of things was managed on the day and really couldn’t have asked for anything more. “As any bride knows photographs are a crucial part of the wedding and with Iconic Bride you can relax in the knowledge that yours are in very safe hands.” Introducing Angela and Richard Tell us about the dress… “I purchased my dress from Karen Willis-Holmes in Brisbane. As soon as I put it on I felt like a glamorous, old-Hollywood movie star and knew that I just had to have it.”

Where did you honeymoon? “We chose a winter skiing holiday in Aspen, Colarado USA for our honeymoon. Despite having to wait a few months after our wedding for the start of the U.S. winter ski season, we knew it would be the perfect honeymoon for us, as a love of skiing is something we share and what could be more romantic than snuggling up in front of a fire with a warm cup of cocoa at the end of the day?” Can you share some advice for future brides? “It sounds cliché, but really do try to enjoy the wedding planning process and soak up every moment – even the stressful ones. The big day comes around quicker than you expect and so making the most of the lead up helps the excitement last even longer.”

“I’m not sure there are many couples out there who can say they were genuinely sad to see their photographer leave at the end of the wedding night, but that is how we felt when we said goodbye to Norina. “It was such an absolute pleasure having her as part of our wedding day. She balances her undeniable professionalism and many years of experience with genuine warmth, humour and care. “Choosing the right photographer for our wedding day was a huge decision for us, and we are so happy we chose Norina and Iconic Bride.” Introducing Joe and Melanie How did your husband propose to you? “Joe proposed to me after we’d spent three months travelling together through South and North America, ending at the Big Island in Hawaii. He proposed to me on grand cliffs that had been formed from lava, with champagne at sunset.”

Something new: My Christian Louboutin heels, which Joe had bought for me as a wedding gift. Something borrowed: An embroidered lace handkerchief of my grandmother’s, which I kept in the pocket of my wedding dress. Something blue: My garter, given to me by my mum.”

Did you have any traditions or anything out of the ordinary you did the night before the wedding? “The day before the wedding was a relatively standard one for me. I had a relaxing massage with my husband-to-be’s sister at Endota Spa, finalised my speech and got an early night. Joe was a little more adventurous (no surprises there). – He and his best man went sky diving. It turns out his skydive instructor was the partner of Iconic Bride’s very own Sarah-Jane!

Tell us about your dress… “My dress was made by stunning London designer, Caroline Castigliano. I had a very clear vision of the dress I wanted to wear and spent what felt like forever trying to find it (no lace and no bling are decidedly difficult criteria!) until I came across Caroline Castigliano’s beautiful store. Having my dress made was such a wonderful, personal experience. Travelling with my precious, and somewhat large, dress on a total of 5 flights to get from London to Airlie Beach, less than a week before our wedding…well that is another story! But we (the dress and I) made it and I wouldn’t change a thing. It was perfect.”

“I woke up on the morning of our wedding to a knock on the door. It was Joe’s dad there to wish me all the best, give me a big hug. Personally deliver a handwritten letter from Joe. It was a lovely start to the morning. I then caught a limo out to Villa Botanica with my ladies and spent a lovely morning relaxing and getting prepped there, while Joe took in a round of golf. What was your ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’ “Something old: My great grandmother’s brooch, which I pinned to my bouquet.

What song did you choose to walk down the aisle to? “I walked down the aisle to a live string trio playing the Prince of Denmark’s March (Clarke). We wanted our wedding to be classic and meaningful and this song meant a lot to us. In addition to being a timeless piece, which we both loved, it was also the song my parents walked down the aisle to and Joe and I were delighted to give them this tribute.”

Introducing Mark and Leila Any silly moments from your wedding that you look back on now and laugh? “There was a moment just prior to the maid of honour walking down the aisle where two of the guests, a couple who just dropped off their young baby in the nursery/day care facility at the venue, walked down the aisle. We were all gathered and waiting, expecting the bridal procession to appear, and they walked out instead and froze - with everybody staring! They quickly recovered and strolled down the aisle waving at the other guests before quickly taking their seats. A light-hearted break in such a suspense filled moment!” Where was your favourite photo location? “Iconic Bride Photography were, simply put, fantastic. “They were incredibly easy to deal with, friendly, understanding and extremely thorough. “They really impressed us with their detailed knowledge of our wedding venue at Villa Botanica, and really knew how to capture the best possible photographs of our special day. “Norina, our photographer, was really approachable and relaxed. She helped put us at ease and not worry or stress, so we could really just enjoy our wedding. “Our experience with Iconic Bride Photography was excellent!”

“The rainforest that they have at Villa Botanica resulted in some spectacular photos. Large scale shots with plenty of vegetation, very striking photos that we just love.” What is your most memorable moment from your wedding day? “When we were saying our vows. A time where all of your focus and attention is on the person in front of you. We weren’t even aware of all the guests in that moment.” Where did you honeymoon? “We went to the Maldives for a week. It was sensational!” Any advice for future brides that they might find helpful? “A little cliche, but don’t stress. Even if your day doesn’t go 100% to plan, it will still be perfect regardless.” www.corelife.com.au 47

“Iconic Bride were amazing. From the moment we paid our deposit to our wedding day. “Norina was so lovely, she knew exactly what we wanted and she just got us. It was a fun and easy experience. Our bridal party loved her. “On the day, she did not stop smiling once. Her energy and sense of humor was the best. I felt really relaxed prior to walking down the aisle. She absolutely made our day. “She captured the most natural pictures. The groomsman were amazed that she would dig herself into sand or sit in water just to capture our pictures. “Now that’s a photographer,” they said.” Introducing Justin and Bianca How did your husband propose to you? Justin had taken me away over New Years to Bali and proposed just after midnight on New Years’ evening at our gorgeous resort. What song did you walk down the aisle to? We chose “Everything - by Lifehouse”. This song was a song we both loved and thought about each other when it was played. We even got the song name “Everything” engraved on our wedding rings. Tell us about your dress… My dress was made for me. I designed it with designer Andrea Gorrie. I’m a lace lover, so I had to have lace on my dress. I have always wanted a long train also which looked stunning. You only do this once, so I wanted to design a dress that really looked like a wedding dress because I will never get this chance again! Any funny hens / bucks stories you would like to share? I had to have these big pastel balloons tied around my wrist and could not take them off. I couldn’t remember what my punishment was if I did take them off, but I didn’t take them off until the end. Going to the toilet was very much a mission. Justin had to wear this bright coloured wig to the races in Melbourne, which featured on channel 9 news!

Any moments of terror or something that didn’t quite go right? My aunty was taking photos of the bridal party and then she fell and broke her wrist which wasn’t nice. What was your “something old, new, borrowed and blue?” My something old was two old photos of my four grandparents that I had put in small key rings for under my bouquet. My new was my dress, my borrowed was a pendant my mum gave me and something blue was my earrings. What is your most memorable moment? Walking down the aisle, watching my husband-to-be and seeing him say “WOW.” It was something most girls dream of and it was just so surreal. Having everyone you love the most only metres away from you. Best moment ever!

Rain, Rain Go Away! Don’t let a storm cast a shadow over your big day. It is consistently the number one fear of brides-to-be.

Rain. Before you obsessively begin checking the weather forecast a month out from your big day, save yourself some unnecessary stress and heartache by having a backup plan. Take into consideration the three main parts of your wedding and come up with a contingency plan for the ceremony, photos and reception. It’s not necessary for your backup to blow the budget, the strangest venue ideas can often make unique and stunning backdrops.

Get creative Think of an iconic structure close to your wedding location. It could be a shabby barn, a railway platform, old factory or an undercover area of a park. Often the strangest location can produce the most memorable ceremony.

Embrace superstition It’s said that rain on your wedding day is good luck, so instead of lamenting that the day didn’t go fully to plan, smile that your day is blessed. Rain can make for some unusual spur-of-the-moment occurrences, which often end up becoming the highlight of the day.

Rain can produce the most beautiful pictures Inclement weather will produce the most beautiful backdrop for wedding photos. Clouds create mood, sun peeking through clouds can illuminate a gorgeous focal point and puddles can be used for reflective perspective shots. Raindrops streaming down look incredible and scenery after the rain has stopped is crisp and fresh. For incredible photo opportunities, you should be so lucky that you get rain!

Cure rain accessories Coordinate parasols and gumboots to match your wedding theme, and you can create funky rain photos, jumping in puddles with your bridesmaids and huddling under a brollie for a cheeky wedded kiss. Pack coats to protect your bridal party moving in-between locations and provide your guests with ponchos if they are likely to be in the rain for a while.

Smile Don’t let the weather dictate how your married life begins. Smile, make the most of every opportunity and keep the day in perspective. You’re about to marry the person in the world you love the most and no weather event can ruin that feeling. The most unique weather situations make the best stories, so rain, hail or shine, smile knowing that your day will be truly spectacular.

In preparation for my wedding this May, I have now completed five IPL treatments with Sarah-Lee for my underarms and full legs. When I was 12 years old, I begged my mum to let me shave my extremely thick black leg hair. We compromised by getting my legs waxed. I had constant ingrown hairs and red itchy areas all over my legs. For some time now, I have been looking for someone local here in Airlie Beach that does IPL, as I didn’t wish to travel to Mackay for each treatment. It is so convenient to have Sarah-Lee working and living as a local here in Airlie. As soon as I walked into Sarah’s treatment room, she explained everything in a bubbly and professional manner. In such a short time I am super impressed with the success of less to no hair returning in all areas!

Sarah-Lee has also treated my eczema prone skin and it is the best it has been in 5 years. I have recommended Sensorium to all my close girlfriends and now a majority of them are all receiving IPL treatments from the lovely Sarah-Lee.

Planning to be Silky Smooth for your Honeymoon? • Most people require 6- 12 treatments to obtain the long lasting results we aim for and enjoy good hair loss with slow regrowth after 4 treatments. • Waxing is a contraindication to IPL permanent hair reduction so stop NOW! You need 4 weeks of shaving/no waxing to be eligible for treatment. • Treatments are scheduled at 8 week intervals, so plan at least 8-12 months ahead and chances are you won’t be packing a razor for your honeymoon! • Tanning is not a friend of IPL either, so save your skin the hassle and cover up for now. Remember a tan is a scar and the only safe tan is a fake tan, people! • IPL is great value for money when you consider the cost of waxing over your lifetime. • IPL packages save you a stack of cash. Multiple areas beat treating one area at a time hands down.

is your skin wedding ready? With all eyes on you as you walk down the aisle, beam with confidence knowing that your skin looks radiant. For many brides-to-be, getting their skin looking perfect for the big day is a top priority. Your makeup will last longer and you will have more luck achieving a flawless finish if your skin is clean and healthy first. Good skin is a combination of both what you put in your body and what you put on your skin, so there are a number of things you can do to help in the months leading up to your big day to achieve a glowing complexion from the inside out.

Stay hydrated.

During your hectic wedding planning months, ensure you are drinking at least three litres of water daily. Water promotes cell rejuvenation so cut back on caffeine and alcohol, drink lots of water and eat hydrating and refreshing fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, cucumber and celery.

Eat an array of good fats

Omega-3 fatty acids keep your skin glowing and your hair shiny. Add salmon into your weekly menu, eat raw nuts, add a dash of olive oil onto your salad and include avocado with your breakfast.

Eat more vegetables

Vegetables are high in fibre which can help circulation. They are full of antioxidants which do wonderful things for your entire body and vegetables also support the skin’s elasticity.

scented candle, take a nap or get into yoga.

Develop a skin regimen

Use a good quality cleanser, toner and moisturiser daily and begin this at least a month out from the big day, so your face gets used to the routine. Two weeks out, treat yourself to a deep cleansing facial to allow for toxins and impurities to come to the surface and then clear before the big day. Follow up with a good quality scrub a few days before the wedding. We understand that you don’t always have time to look after your skin, so we have developed a range of skin solutions at Allure to help you achieve a glowing complexion before your big day. Talk to us about how we can help leading up to your big day, whether you have six months or six days. To eliminate deeper lines and give your skin a smooth appearance, we have anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, as well as radiance booster treatments which provide a powerful boost of antioxidants and hydration. To reveal a youthful complexion, talk to us about our microdermabrasion and enzyme peel package to renew and restore the skin. And to perfect the look, our team can give you a relaxing vitamin C boost facial, as well as a brow shape and tint, eyelash tint and Issada Mineral Baked Foundation for flawless coverage.

BRIDE’S BUCKET LIST

WHAT TO DO before YOU SAY “I DO” While wedding planning can be an allconsuming task in itself, tame the inner beast and avoid becoming a Bridezilla by planning some small, life challenges for yourself. By ticking off a premarital bucket-list you’ll be prioritising time just for yourself, which is something which becomes important after you are married too. By focusing on other things as well as your wedding you’ll be helping to keep your stress levels reduced. There’s no time like the present, and every amazing accomplishment you can tick-off before you are married will just give your groom-to-be even more reasons to fall in love with you all over again.

1. Plan a girls’ weekend away Enjoy time with your girlfriends while you can! There will always be time for your besties, but that time will dramatically reduce once other life responsibilities come along. This is your chance to have raw, unbridled and wild fun! Pamper yourselves, splash out a little luxury, sip cocktails at sunset and dance the night away.

2. Buy a luxurious, totally impractical item Undoubtedly you will be putting almost every last cent toward your wedding, but trust us when we say that this is the best time to buy something utterly luxurious and special for yourself. Something that gives you tingles when you look at it, a forever reminder of something you did for yourself pre marriage.

3. Conquer a fear After you’re married, it’s easy to rely on your husband to step up when you’re afraid. It can be something as little as a fear of bugs, snakes or heights. There will be times during your marriage when you will need to step up for yourself, so it’s a great opportunity to prove to yourself now that you can do it. Become your own hero and impress your future husband with your strength.

4. Learn something new It’s never too late to develop a new talent or expand your knowledge. Travelling to a foreign country for your honeymoon? Why not learn a bit about the country you are visiting to make your travels easier, or even learn some of the local language. Learn a funky new dance step to surprise your future husband with during your first dance, or take up something relaxing, such as yoga, to help with pre-wedding jitters. The extra toning of course is also an added bonus! 62 www.corelife.com.au

Beauty and the Bride Majella McGowan will happily tell you that growing up she was a tom-boy who preferred mud over make-up and bikes over blush. She does admit that the passion for beauty must have been there somewhere, however, with photos showing her cat receiving a makeover, complete with painted paws. As Majella grew older, her vibrant passion for beauty and make-up led her to complete a beauty therapy and makeup courses and eventually start her own business. “I have always known that one day I would have my own business… It really feels like the right time and I’m so excited and passionate about it all, “I offer a professional makeup service and am willing to travel to any destination in the Mackay/ Whitsunday region,” Majella said. Now Majella spends her days bringing out the natural beauty that all her customers possess, using a range of high-end products to help achieve this. “I want to work with the client to create a look they will love, using high-end products, so they will feel truly amazing on their special day, “My kit is mostly made up of Mac, Nars and Make Up For Ever products plus other brands, “I don’t believe in sticking to one brand as they all have their ‘specialty’ products.” Majella said. Mac brush delicately poised in one hand, Majella expertly uses these high quality products to weave her magic; gently creating the “natural” look that she says is most popular amongst brides. “I have a lot of brides asking for the natural make–up look. They want to feel beautiful on their big day without feeling like someone else entirely” Majella said. Although Majella has a natural talent for evoking and enhancing the beauty in her customers, she says any bride or bridesmaid preparing for a big day can take simple steps to help enhance that perfect glow. “It’s really important to keep up a good skin regime at least six months before the wedding.

Majella Mcgowan

Drinking lots of water helps. “Plenty of beauty sleep the night before the wedding is really important as well” Majella says.

horoscopes PISCES FEB 20 - MARCH 20

VIRGO AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 23

You could need to meet a partner half way to keep the relationship running smoothly. Career wise things should be looking up, providing you honour your commitments. It is a lucky period for money although some of the decisions you may have to make may not be easy. Many could be taking up an entirely new life style. The best time to sort out your personal problems is now. Get your advice from the experts rather than listening to well meaning friends who could be misguided. Don’t spend money you haven’t got.

You could be asking too much for your efforts in career matters. Avoid excesses on all levels. You may not be seeing eye to eye with someone usually very supportive and this could be that you are in the wrong. Apart from this, most will be meeting exciting new people and having a hectic social life. A very exciting time for love and or planning a family. Completely different sorts of people will cross your path and many could re pattern their lifestyles. Someone out of the past may remind you of the things better forgotten.

ARIES MARCH 21- APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23

Over confidence could cause you to take unnecessary risks. Don’t throw money away. Take care of your impulses. They can land you into situations you do not need at the moment. Accepting invitations to socialize more often could bring an exciting opportunity across your path. More will be in the public gaze. Problems in your love life should sort out. Surprises are in store. Many could receive a career offer that could create friction with your emotional relationships.

Happy news is on its way. More responsibilities are involved. Unexpected developments in a financial venture. Most will be getting rid of unwanted objects in their lives. Should be a boost to your financial affairs. Most could be feeling rather bored with their usual routine. Someone usually dependable could be annoying you and this could threaten an otherwise good friendship.

TAURUS APRIL 21- MAY 20 Contacts with friends and relatives from a distance could change your moods, but worry could make you totally miserable if you let it. Have faith in your own abilities to change things when you need to. A surprising and happy situation appearing out of the blue could be exactly what you need right now. If single, you should meet someone you could really take a fancy too. A restless urge could make the time drag and some could lack discretion in affairs of the heart. GEMINI MAY 21 - JUNE 21 You could be feeling hemmed in in your domestic relationship and this could be the time to change something. Dealing with VIP’s will certainly bring rewards. If you need a favour, don’t be afraid to ask. Your responsibility will be increased and so will your rewards. A strong urge to socialize will find many meeting new and exciting people. Invitations to travel far away are indicated. A past love could be more exciting the second time around. CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Details concerning career and money matters should be carefully checked as there could be some deception around. Financial affairs could be keeping you busier than usual. Excellent opportunities to expand present activities. Some could become involved in a new and exciting romantic relationship. Career ventures should be successful. You should be meeting interesting and important people on the social scene. Love and business could mix successfully. LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 22 With a little effort you should be able to gain the best of both love and money, if speculating. Good luck can happen when you need it most. The financial picture looks good and can bring changes. However, don’t spend to impress. A big opportunity is in the pipeline and many could be offered excellent openings into new careers. Those close to you could be surprised at your energy. Your life and love affairs should be proceeding much more smoothly and this could be the best time to break bad habits. Circumstances could force you on to a new and healthier way of life.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 - NOV 22 Friends could get you into financial strife if you let them. A change of life style is in the stars. Friends could play a big part in your romantic affairs. Loved ones will be taking up a lot of your time. You should be successful at anything you put your mind to. Many will realise the true worth of their friends and social life should be enjoyable. New family members can bring a lot more joy into your life. You will need to be more responsive to the needs of others. Most will be more in the social spotlight. SAGITARIUS NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 20 Do not be too trusting with your money amongst friends. You could also feel like doing something outlandish that could shock a few people. Don’t fall for a hard luck story or you’ll never see your money or goods again. A rather tricky period all round. Nothing much will go as expected. However, don’t get bored. Many could be involved in a serious love affair. Most will be spending time with someone with views that are similar to yours. CAPRICORN DEC 21 - JAN 19 Take some time out to get away from routine cares and do some of the things you always wanted to. A happier outlook and there should be more success with your plans. You may be feeling unsettled and find yourself unable to concentrate. Romance is in the air and someone special should cross your path or an on going relationship becomes more exciting. Make sure to be in bright and happy company rather than dwelling on past problems. AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19 Someone might not be completely reliable and you may be too impatient to be careful about your actions. Restlessness may need to be overcome if you are to be able to enjoy yourself. Not the time to try anything risky. There is likely to be quite some improvements in your love life. Don’t say anything you don’t have to rather than cause a scene. This is a tricky and some what unpredictable period. However, your love life is about to pick up and in some cases a choice too many. Stay alert. You may need to outwit someone. Someone who is trying to get the best of you. If you need moral support, who better than the family.

Tell us about the best wedding you have been to:

And of course the experience of witnessing the intimacy and uniqueness of them saying I do in those spectacular surrounds.

Being an experienced wedding coordinator I have had the opportunity to be part of some incredible weddings over the past 10 years. Without a doubt, my friend’s elopement on Whitehaven beach will always be a truly wonderful memory.

My two daughters gave me away and I will always remember Richard’s face as we walked down the aisle to him The pub was drunk dry and everyone laughed and danced into the night.

From the butterflies when boarding a seaplane for the first time, the excited chatter during the flight and seeing the magnificence of the Whitsunday Islands from the air, then landing on the water amidst the glory of Whitehaven Beach.

The best wedding I have been to would have to be my own. I would say that wouldn’t I?

And of course the experience of witnessing the intimacy and uniqueness of them saying “I do” in those spectacular surrounds. It doesn’t get much better than that! Sandi holman, peppers airlie beach

rom modelling on a Parisian runway to volunteering in a Cambodian orphanage, there is more to this former Roxy model than meets the eye. When travelling through South-east Asia for six months, Jess Middleton saw the turmoil and poverty that plagues many of these countries. Through natural disasters, disease and poverty, many children become orphans. Jess volunteered at orphanages in Vietnam and Cambodia during her travels. An experience she describes as both fulfilling yet heartbreaking. Another serious cause of children ending up in orphanages is through car accidents, something that Jess can closely relate to. “When I was 16 I was very lucky to survive a horrific car accident. Another driver suffered a heart attack behind the wheel on a bridge and we collided head-on at a combined speed of 120 miles per hour. I was in hospital for more than a month and bed-bound for more than three months. “I guess someone was watching over me that day and it made me realise how quickly life can change.” Her travel then led Jess to Australia, where she had applied for a one year work visa. One year became two when Jess met her partner, Zane and she has now applied for residency.

Airlie’s English Rose Jess Middleton

Jess is originally from the south-west of England, North Devon. With a passion for sports, she is a self-proclaimed tomboy and grew up on a surfboard, although in England they would surf when the water was only 8 degrees! She also had a passion for art and beauty and spent three years studying in Exeter City, graduating with the highest possible qualifications in beauty therapy. If you get the feeling that you’ve seen Jess before, it may have well been in a magazine or on a billboard. Jess modelled in the UK for Roxy, ASOS, Wed Magazine, Southwest Bride Magazine and Skull Candy. “I worked with Roxy thanks to a good friend of mine, Sophie Hellyer, who surfs internationally and is sponsored by Roxy. Roxy’s product lines are fantastic which made them easy to model for. I’m in Japan snowboarding at the moment, decked out in Roxy gear, but, unfortunately, I feel it’s a case of all the gear and no idea,” she laughed. Jess brought her beauty treatment skills to Airlie Beach with The Beauty Room, a boutique beauty salon on the main street of Airlie, opposite Mangrove Jacks, offering luxe treatments at bargain prices! “We have worked hard to keep costs low to cater to our local clientele. Our customers are more like friends than clients. We are flexible with treatment hours to suit those who work different hours and aim for every treatment to be a pampering and personal experience,” Jess said. When she’s not working, Jess enjoys the simple things that make life and love grand. A warm bath with a glass of red, a good film with chocolate and a good cuddle. When the weather is glorious, she spends as much time as possible out in the Whitsundays. “I love to get out in the boat with Zane and spend time around the islands and the reef, fishing and soaking up the Whitsundays lifestyle. “I think it would be a travesty to live on the doorstep of such natural beauty and not utilise it!”

Cosmetic procedures offered include breast augmentation, nose reshaping, tummy tucks, breast lifts, face lifts and hair transplants. “Wonderful friendships are made on these tours. Travelling overseas for dentistry or surgery can be scary, but when in a small group, with a great coordinator who doesn’t leave your side, it makes it easy!” explains Sonia Wilkinson, Medical Tour Coordinator.

Why travel with us?

With a saving of up to 70% off your medical bill, as well as VIP hospital service with flights, accommodation and appointments booked for you, why would you go to Thailand alone? “I have worked hard to develop a strong relationship with the hospital. After over 40 visits and hundreds of happy clients, we enjoy VIP treatment, no waiting times and coordinators in every hospital department looking after our medical tour group.” explains Rowena Kissun, Director of Whitsunday Medical Tours & Whitsunday Health Clinic.

What have past clients said about the tours?

A testimonial from a recent client: I was made aware of all of my costs and options during my meetings at the clinic before departing. Liaising with my surgeon via Whitsunday Medical Tours was extremely easy. Once I arrived at the hospital I was absolutely amazed at the organisation of the place. It was so clean, professional and organised. My procedure involved a 2 night stay. Every need was attended to and I was treated like royalty. I felt completely safe through the whole process. My recovery time was pretty quick and I was not in any pain after the first few days. The follow up appointments and after care was second to none. Rowena ensured I was taken to and from every appointment at the hospital, making sure I was settled in at my hotel and had everything I needed. She provided me with a mobile phone to contact family and an extensive travel kit.

Whitsunday Medical Tours specialises in Dental procedures including crowns, veneers, laser whitening and full comprehensive repair work for cases deemed too difficult and expensive to treat in Australia.

It is now 3 months on from my procedure and I am so happy with the work. What I asked for is exactly what I got!

Shaun before

The fitness industry is an amazing place to work. I’m blessed to meet great people in my fitness centre every day who are inspiring in their own way, and Shaun Hughes is no exception. In fact, Shaun’s dedication & results have been quite incredible…

This is Shaun’s story: Shaun Hughes // Occupation Mechanic at Crossly Holden // Age 28 // Born Newcastle but grew up in Mackay // Lives Cannonvale Shaun was 125.3 kgs about 9 months ago. He had been that way for most of his life. I sat down with him to ask him about his journey:

How did you feel being “that” guy (pre transformation)? “I didn’t feel the best”, he said, but I tried tell myself I didn’t care what anyone else thought. I didn’t have the energy or the motivation to change. Shaun had tried gym memberships before but couldn’t stay focused on his goals. He joined Airlie Fitness some time ago and didn’t use his membership much, but then nearly 9 months ago something clicked.

The transformation: BEFORE 123.5 kgs // NOW 80.1 kgs Tell us about your training:

I do 20 minutes of cardio to warm up before my weights. My strength program is split into separate days (back, chest etc) and I always finish each gym session with core exercises. Every Wednesday I do Cristy’s Power class to break up the routine.

Favourite exercise?

Lat Pulldown and Squats. My favourite cardio exercise is the Arc Trainer.

Who has helped you the most and how?

Jake (Personal Trainer at Airlie Fitness) has helped me a lot. From setting up my training routines, showing me how to do things and help with diet and supplements. When I do PT sessions with him he always pushes me to my limit!

How has your diet changed?

My diet before wasn’t healthy. I didn’t care what I ate and had a big sweet tooth, especially for soft drinks.

I woke up one day and looked at myself in the mirror. I didn’t want to be the guy I was anymore. The guy everyone talked to but didn’t really look at because of how I looked.

Now I cut out all processed carbs like bread and pasta and never drink soft drinks. Take away food is a thing of the past and I cut as much sugar out as I can. I eat lean, with chicken, grilled fish, salads and steamed veggies. I’ve been eating clean for so long I don’t even feel like cheat days!

I wanted to be noticed for the right reasons. I wanted to be looked up to. I wanted to be that guy who’s in great shape. I wanted to be that guy who’s hot & buff

What supplements do you take?

What motivated you to make a change?

Shaun’s results have been nothing short of incredible since that day. The entire Airlie Fitness team has personally witnessed Shaun’s dedication to training, which has been inspirational even to those of us that train daily as a matter of habit. It’s hard to remember a day in the last 9 months that he hasn’t been in there for lengthy gym and cardio sessions, classes and Personal Training. 78 www.corelife.com.au

Alphamine has been a great thermogenic every morning to help me burn fat. I take Muscle Elements Pre Cre as a pre workout and sip Amino IV as my intra workout branch chain aminos. Protowhey is a my post workout shake and my favourite supplement.

What are the top 3 pieces of advice you can give anyone who is inspired by your story to start their own challenging journey of change?

2. Stay focused. Don’t let yourself lose track of your goals – you want them for a reason, so go get them! 3. Commitment. Find what works for you, ask for help and advice and commit to the plan. Shaun has succeed by being committed, consistent, and methodical to reach his goals. He hasn’t given in to crazy diets, Isagenix or fitness fads! His choices of healthy, clean eating, good old fashioned strength training, core training and cardio mean his results are real and sustainable in the long term.

I dont know.

I don’t want to marry anyone, I want to stay single!

I just want to stay here with mummy forever.

Reasons…

I want to put a ring on mummys finger, cause she is beautiful and really nice. “What shop do I get a marry ring from daddy? Cause I want to buy a marry ring for mummy, I will buy a beautiful golden one with a shiny diamond.”

So I can do whatever I want, whenever I want I don’t have to share things like my food. I don’t have to live with someone else I can buy as many ‘boys toys’ as I want I don’t have to kiss a girl!

if I can’t marry Olivia I would like to marry someone like my mum

mack She is in my class at school in Mackay. Her name is olivia. Her mum and my mum know each other and have known each other for a very very long time. She is nice and pretty and has brown hair. I think she does gymnastics. Sometimes she’s funny, she is also very smart. If I can’t marry olivia I would like to marry someone like my mum.

Jack and Jill sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in the baby carriage. I’m often asked What Can I Do Prior to Pregnancy to help Prevent Childhood Illness? Fantastic question… prevention is key and if I knew then what I know now, I guess you probably wouldn’t be reading this today. • Today 1 in 3 Australian children have asthma • 1 in 4 allergies • 1 in 10 ADHD • 1 in 50 Children in Queensland have Autism Childhood cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression have each more than doubled in the past 20 years. We all look forward to having healthy babies so if considering becoming pregnant, give yourself six to twelve month to improve your diet and make better lifestyle choices. Some women I’ve worked with choose to address GI-related conditions prior to conceiving, especially if they have a history of candida (yeast), digestive problems, food allergies/sensitivities, bloating, constipation, or parasites. Everyone has bacteria good and bad in the gut but women also need good bacteria in the birth canal. When passing through the birth canal, babies get their “first meal” of these bacteria, enabling baby to digest food, keep pathogens in check, support the immune system etc. If delivered by caesarean the bacterial profile changes with less beneficial and more pathogenic stuff. Bad bacteria can cause diarrhea and colic in the short term, with more serious effects later on. Working with a professional with first-hand experience can help you lay the foundations to health and wellness, greatly minimizing the likelihood that your child will be prone to the above conditions.

We take pride in recognising our five students from Whitsunday Anglican School who received an OP 1. The OP eligible cohort for 2014 at our School was 61 students and the figures represented in the graph below shows that 8.2% of the cohort achieved an OP 1. The kind of tickle response that features laughter is called gargalesis, and in the animal kingdom, it’s a rare thing. Only humans and our close primate relatives have been observed doing it. Until recently, that is. Researchers have found that rats also exhibit the laughter response to tickling. Scientists at the Washington State University have spent the last decade gathering significant evidence that rats “laugh” when tickled. They found that when the rats are tickled in sensitive areas, they let off a high-pitched chirp which is akin to human laughter and seems to signify joy. The rats, known for being playful creatures, ran through mazes and chose levers that they knew would give a reward in the form of a good tickle.
