ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)

This year, Rams might feel like charging headfirst into new adventures, but remember, not all paths are paved with pineapples (especially in North Queensland!). Your quest for spontaneity might find you windsurfing in the Whitsundays or attempting a dance-off with a cheeky cassowary. Keep the SPF handy as your energy beams, but don’t let impulsive decisions lead to walking the plank! As Jupiter aligns, embrace bold choices, but don’t forget to savour the subtle flavours life serves!

Love Prediction: Brace yourself, fiery Aries! This year might bring a partner who matches your enthusiasm for adventure. Get ready for someone who’s as bold and spontaneous as you are, ready to whisk you away on exhilarating escapades!

Lucky Number: 9 | Lucky Colour: Red

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Cancerians, your crustacean shells might need extra TLC this year. Dive into the soothing energies of Bowen’s beaches for some cosmic rejuvenation. But beware the pinch of overprotectiveness; not everyone needs a shell to hide in! Trust in the ebb and flow of life, and remember, not every crab is out to snip at your toes. As the moon waxes, find solace in your emotions, letting vulnerability be your strength.

Love Prediction: Love might come from someone who adores nurturing and emotional connections, dear Cancer. Expect a partner who wraps you in affectionate care, creating a cosy haven just for you.

Lucky Number: 21 | Lucky Colour: Grey

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)

Tauruses, this year’s cosmic bulls encourage you to till the soil of your ambitions. Embrace the down-toearth vibes in Mackay; dig deep into your passions and cultivate your dreams like a sugarcane field. Just beware the lure of too much chill time on the beaches—it’s great to relax, but not when your deadlines float away like a wayward dinghy! With celestial blessings, trust the universe’s timeline and find beauty in the slower moments of life.

Love Prediction: Taurus, you might find yourself drawn to someone who values stability and indulges in cosy moments. Get prepared for a partner who’s as reliable as your favourite blanket on a chilly night.

Lucky Number: 6 | Lucky Colour: Turquoise Green

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

The Twins might feel like catching a whirlwind this year—blame it on those magnetic ocean breezes in North Queensland. Social butterflies, you’ll flit between Townsville’s markets and Airlie’s sun-kissed shores. Just remember, amidst the chatter, keep one eye on your compass; it’s easy to get lost in the sea of conversations! As Mercury dances with the stars, revel in your duality, finding joy in the multiplicity of experiences that come your way.

Love Prediction: A talkative and intellectually stimulating partner might steal your heart, Gemini! Get set for lively debates and playful banter with someone who matches your wit and charm.

Lucky Number: 3 | Lucky Colour: Yellow

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)

Roaring Lions, the cosmic stage is yours this year. Flaunt your mane at the Townsville Strand or bask in the spotlight at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music. Just watch out for too much pride—remember, even the mightiest lions need a moment to paw-sitively reflect! With solar grace, radiate your inner light while humbly learning from the cosmic spotlight.

Love Prediction: You might meet someone who showers you with admiration, Leo! Be ready for a partner who celebrates your radiance and joins in on your grand adventures.

Lucky Number: 1 | Lucky Colour: Gold

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)

Virgos, this year calls for your analytical prowess. Navigate the landscape of Mackay with precision, but don’t stress over perfecting every detail. Just like the changing tides in the Coral Sea, let your plans ebb and flow. Flexibility will be your anchor amidst the choppy waves of unpredictability. As the stars align, find harmony in the symphony of chaos, embracing imperfections as cosmic strokes on life’s canvas.

Love Prediction: Practical and organised, your ideal partner might embody similar traits, Virgo. Prepare for someone who appreciates your attention to detail and shares your dedication to personal growth.

Lucky Number: 5 | Lucky Colour: Navy Blue

Disclaimer: These horoscopes are for entertainment purposes only. Please surf the cosmic waves responsibly and wear your stargazing goggles at night!

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)

Balance-seeking Librans, this year’s cosmic scales might sway with the sea breeze. Embrace harmony in the Whitsundays, but don’t get swept away by the mesmerizing beauty! Your quest for fairness might have you playing referee at Bowen’s crab races—just remember, sometimes it’s okay not to pick a side. With Venus’ guidance, harmonise the scales of justice, letting cosmic equilibrium unfold in unexpected ways.

Love Prediction: Libra, this year could introduce you to a partner who cherishes harmony and balance as much as you do. Get ready for someone who brings equilibrium to your world.

Lucky Number: 7 | Lucky Colour: Emerald Green

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)

Scorpios, your stingers might tingle with intensity this year. Dive deep into the mystic waters of North Queensland’s reef, but don’t let your passions turn into a whirlpool. Remember, not every mystery needs solving; sometimes, the thrill is in the dance of discovery! As Mars aligns, channel your inner detective, seeking hidden truths while embracing the enigma of the unknown.

Love Prediction: Get ready for intense passion, Scorpio! You might encounter a partner who matches your depth and loyalty, igniting a connection that’s as magnetic as it is transformative.

Lucky Number: 18 | Lucky Colour: Burgundy

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)

The Archer’s arrow points toward adventure in 2024. Explore the hinterlands near Townsville or set sail for the Whitsundays’ hidden coves. But be mindful— your quest for wanderlust might have you chasing wallabies or trying to out speed the coastal winds on a sailboard! With Jupiter’s blessing, seek wisdom in your adventures, finding profound truths amidst the swirling sands of exploration.

Love Prediction: Sagittarius, prepare for an adventurous soul who’s eager to explore the world with you! Expect a partner who’s as free-spirited and enthusiastic about life’s journey as you are.

Lucky Number: 4 | Lucky Colour: Purple

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)

Capricorns, your steadfast nature meets the tropical tempests this year. Anchor yourself in Mackay’s strong foundations but beware the urge to button down the hatches at every hint of rain. Embrace the spontaneity; even mountain goats need a splash in the rain puddles! As Saturn governs, blend pragmatism with adventure, finding security in the midst of the unexpected storms.

Love Prediction: This year might introduce you to someone who values tradition and reliability, Capricorn. Get set for a partner who shares your ambition and determination to build a secure future.

Lucky Number: 10 | Lucky Colour: Brown

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18

Aquarians, your eccentric spirit finds solace in North Queensland’s vibrancy. Swim with the dolphins in Airlie or join the Townsville Street Art Tour—but don’t let your idealism turn into cloud-gazing. Stay grounded, even if the cosmic currents carry you into the creative ether! With Uranus’ guidance, embrace eccentricity while staying tethered to the cosmic reality.

Love Prediction: Brace yourself for a partner who embraces your uniqueness, Aquarius! Get ready for someone who celebrates individuality and joins you in envisioning a future filled with innovative ideas.

Lucky Number: 13 | Lucky Colour: Sky Blue

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20)

The fishy Pisces might feel the tide of emotions this year. Wade into the tranquil shores of Bowen or cast your dreams into the Whitsundays’ crystal waters. Just be wary—your imaginative flair might have you hunting for mermaids or trying to interpret the waves’ whispers! With Neptune’s touch, navigate the depths of your intuition, finding pearls of wisdom in the cosmic currents.

Love Prediction: Prepare for a deeply empathetic partner, Pisces! Expect someone who connects with your emotions and offers serene companionship, creating an ocean of mutual understanding.

Meet Renee

General Manager

Steadfast and confident are two words that perfectly describe the capable General Manager of Cruise Whitsundays, Renee Branton-Brown.

Heralding the team for over six years now, Renee is the impeccable head, with a clear compass of direction.

Renee joined the Cruise Whitsundays team in 2017, after an extensive history of marine tourism, which began in 2006.

“I’ve been travelling the world for most of my adult life,” she explained.

“I was fortunate to work across multiple Cruise Line Brands and travel to some of the most beautiful places on the planet.”

Her passion is ensuring that holidaymakers of the Whitsundays return home with incredible memories of their time in our waters.

“I love sharing special places with guests and sharing my enthusiasm with them. I’m in the business of making unforgettable memories!”

She is proud of the amazing experiences Cruise Whitsundays has on offer, especially the unforgettable Reefworld experience.

“I joined Cruise Whitsundays the year before we launched Reefworld,” Renee explained.

“Being a part of launching a new product and an ‘Australian first’ was pretty spectacular. I still believe our underwater accommodation Reefsuites are the most unique accommodation in the country!”

During her years, she has helped oversee a great expansion of the business.

“I’ve been part of the development of other new products, the launch of our own café and gift shop and multiple other initiatives that add so much value to the guest experience,” Renee said.

When she’s not overseeing great expansions, she is at home with her husband, her son, and all their family animals, most likely out in the sun, enjoying nature.

Meet Liza

Sales and Marketing Manager

The Whitsundays lifestyle is ingrained in Liza Muller, a 5th generation Whitsundays girl who has a love for the region that resonates within her role of Sales and Marketing Manager of Cruise Whitsundays.

Taking the position with Cruise Whitsundays three years ago, Liza has welcomed the atmosphere of happy holidaymakers, showcasing the extensive sweep of Cruise Whitsundays packages and experiences that entice and excite the senses.

“I love the Whitsundays and I feel so proud to work in an industry that helps me share this special place with visitors every day,” Liza explained.

“I love working on Reefsleep and Reefsuites – they are truly the most incredible unique products!” she added.

Within her role, Liza finds that no two days are the same.

“It’s rare that I’ll live the same day twice,” she explained. “There is so much diversity to the department and, though I may be biased, I believe we have the very best team, and it is a privilege to work with them every day!”

Often described as bubbly, strong willed and compassionate, Liza works hard to build positive relationships and rapport with Cruise Whitsunday clients and guests.

When not ensuring the best for Cruise Whitsundays guests, Liza is with her family, her three children and her husband, Aaron, and the family fur baby Oscar, or catching up with friends and enjoying her routine of Pilates whenever she can.

Having travelled to Brisbane and Melbourne after finishing schooling, Liza soon found herself back in the encompassing grasp of the Whitsundays, growing her family in the cool waters and balmy nights.

Meet Stu

Marine Operations Manager

Poised and ready for anything is how his team describe Stuart Allwright, the strong and confident Marine Operations Manager of Cruise Whitsundays.

Having ventured out from the United Kingdom in 2004, Stu arrived in Australia with the intention of relaxaing and engaging with the Australian way of life. Before long he become encompassed within the marine industry and has never looked back.

Since March 2013, Stu has been a part of Cruise Whitsundays, exploring an industry where sharing knowledge and creating change is paramount. He has worked from the ground up, “from the trenches of cleaning up passenger’s sea sick almost 11 years ago,” to running operations now, he understands every facet of the business. Stuart now manages a magnificent team of over 130 staff members with 22 commercial vessels and six tenders.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside many skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable people who have been happy to teach and share their knowledge which has been incredible,” Stuart explained.

“I hope I’ve shared some too,” he added.

In his role as Marine Operations Manager, Stuart is often at the helm of various national and state regulators, negotiating on-water operations, and ensuring his team are capable, confident, and ready for their job.

“Marine operations can be a very dynamic environment. It’s one big giant puzzle with multiple solutions and although the outcome is similar each day, every day is uniquely different.”

A lover of adrenaline fuelled activities, Stuart has an exciting history of 100 skydives under his belt, however, he prefers to spend his free time around his home, with his wife Amanda and their son Stirling.

Meet Damien

Senior Vessel Master

For over five years, Damien Foreman, more affectionally known as Damo, has been at the helm of Cruise Whitsundays vessels, acting as Senior Vessel Master.

While no day is the same as the last, Damien thrives in the position and with Cruise Whitsundays, an organisation that has allowed him to professionally prosper and develop.

“I have always wanted to live and work in the Whitsundays, I love the place, the product I deliver and creating lasting memories for guests,” Damien explained.

“I love seeing and helping crew develop onboard and to succeed in the marine industry.”

Overseeing the performance and calibration of the vessels, Damien is kept occupied with the vast amount of experiences and tours that Cruise Whitsundays offers.

Damien became entangled in the industry, having owned his own fishing charter for six years on the New South Wales Central Coast before he relocated to the ever-picturesque Whitsundays, in search for balmy weather and perfect waters.

“I have the best job in the world, every day I get to take people to the Great Barrier Reef and see the look on their faces after they’ve been for a snorkel or dive and they’ve experienced the beauty of our backyard.”

Damien was quick to move through the ranks at Cruise Whitsundays and was promoted to Senior Master soon after his arrival, a testament to his professionalism and experience, and a reward he is incredibly proud of.

“I’ve also loved building such a strong team, I genuinely enjoy building up my team and seeing them thrive!”

When not on the water with Cruise Whitsundays, Damien is often relaxing with friends and family.

“I don’t mind a cheeky drink with my friends, relaxing and exploring.”

Meet Tyler

Vessel Engineer

There is not one part of the business that Vessel Engineer Tyler Bellingham hasn’t influenced at Cruise Whitsundays, with his over 10 years of dedicated service and commitment.

In fact, Tyler is one of the hardest working team members with Cruise Whitsundays, having joined the team as a wharf porter and handling baggage, before moving into cruise attendant, tour guide, deck hand. He is now as Vessel Engineer, primarily for the beach boats that venture to Whitehaven Beach almost daily.

Initially, Tyler dreamt of driving the boats, being a captain or first mate, however just over three years ago, he discovered his real passion for engineering, for repairing broken down boats, and looking after the on-board machinery.

“I’ve always had an interest in machinery, but three years ago, I started the process,” Tyler explained.

In 2020, Tyler was in Cairns completing his first qualification, and in late 2021, he was in Tasmania at the Maritime College, excelling and impressing his lecturers and teachers.

On board the Whitehaven Beach experiences, Tyler is largely behind the scenes, ensuring guest safety and smooth sailing, instructing his two deck hands on operations.

“I’m in charge of all the machinery on board the boat,” he explained.

“And if it breaks down, I’ve got to fix it.”

Tyler finds the job incredibly interesting, and loves investigating how engines tick.

He now knows the vessel’s engines like the back of his hands, and makes the repair and operation look easy.

“It takes hard work to make it look easy,” he laughed.

When not out on the water, Tyler enjoys diving, exploring and fishing, primarily around the islands, which he is able to navigate with ease.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? Everyone called me Smallbo growing up, I secretly miss it.

Ellie Goulding, a familiar face at the Reef Gateway Hotel in Airlie Beach, radiates a vibrant energy that transcends her managerial duties. Originating from Mildura, Victoria, Ellie has called Airlie Beach home since 2011, embracing the coastal charm and infusing it with her lively essence. When she’s not orchestrating the perfect pub experience, Ellie’s escapades include impromptu island getaways with her girlfriends, commandeering boats for Whitehaven Beach cruises, and cherishing time with her doting family— especially her lunch dates arranged by her ever-loving mum.

In the love department, Ellie’s narrative reads straight out of a rom-com. A chance meeting with her partner at Magnums sparked a decade-long love affair, solidified by a strong bond with her partner’s mother turned best friend. Hospitality courses through Ellie’s veins, starting her journey at 16 and climbing the ladder with two diplomas in Hospitality Management. Her rise— from Duty Manager to Senior Operations Manager at Reef Gateway Hotel— epitomises her passion and dedication.

She credits her managerial style to mentorship and guidance from her parents. “From a really young age I would pretend I owned my father’s business, it ended up teaching me a lot of skills,” she said.

Ellie’s life isn’t short on thrills either. Zooming upside down in a fighter pilot jet above Airlie Beach stands as her wildest memory, matched only by the thrill of daily joys—an amazing partner, rock-solid friendships, and a fulfilling career.

“Meeting my partner was the best thing ever,” Ellie enthuses. “He lets me be the girl boss I am.”

With Ellie, every moment is a celebration. Her ethos: live life, embrace love, and navigate the skies, even if it means doing loops over paradise.

Ellie in three words: Fabulous, funny, honest.

Having just completed four years of travelling Australia with his wife Nettie in their motorhome, the pair were drawn to Airlie Beach, which opened the door for their role as Resident Managers of Colonial Palms Motor Inn. It’s been a change of pace from the nomadic lifestyle they had become accustomed to, but with their many years in small business and hospitality experience, the transition has been smooth sailing.

Acting as a perfect dream team, Greg and Nettie manage all facets and operations of the resort, including repairs, maintenance, reception, housekeeping, and the Palms Restaurant.

With over 45 years of being a restauranteur, having opened his first restaurant with a friend at age 22, Greg knows how to wear the many hats required for the job, and is eager to elevate Colonial Palms to new heights.

“We are both very passionate about our work,” Greg explained.

“We don’t have weekends. When we open a new venture or take on a new role such as this one, we give it our all, it’s 100 per cent or nothing.”

When he’s not busy at the Colonial Palms, Greg is spending time with his wife.

“We have been blissfully married for 28 years. Nettie is the most beautiful person in my world.”

In fact, meeting Nettie is the best thing that has happened in Greg’s life.

“We are an awesome team.

“We have three children and three grandchildren,” Greg said.

She’s been by his side in good times and bad.

“I have a genetic condition with brain aneurysms, I’ve had 9 neuro surgeries.

HAVE WE DODGED A RECESSION?

As we start the New Year and the Festive Season frivolities recede, we start to think about how our super and pensions are positioned.

In 2023 the world saw savage interest rate rises as central bankers tried to tame inflation. Recent indications are that inflation is now trending down and interest rates may be relaxed a little from their current levels in 2024. History tells us that increases in interest rates have ultimately led to a recession within 3 years every time. Is this time different? The New Zealand economy has just entered recession. Higher home loan repayments are progressively eroding families cash buffers. Any borrowers who think we’re going back to home loans under 2% is dreaming. Does this mean we should change our investment strategy with our super or pension nest egg?

For our clients the answer is no! We always ensure our clients are set up with protection strategies in their investment portfolios to

protect against whatever the world throws at them.

All the major studies throughout history tell us that investors who try to time the market and sell or buy perceived high or low points end up worse off than people who stay the course and don’t panic. The key is to have a strategy to deal with market downturns and ensure you still have your regular income and are never forced into selling investments at the wrong time when they have fallen in value. It also helps to have an experienced professional with a cool head to talk to as emotions can take over when you’re talking about that nest egg that took you so long to build up.

We don’t think the turmoil is over yet. Some think that it will all be over soon, and inflation and interest rates will fall, Russia, China and Iran will become good global citizens and the party of low interest rates and booming property markets we enjoyed for much of the

last decade will restart. Those who have been students of markets, economics and politics over longer periods know that these goldilocks periods aren’t the norm. Things could get much worse from here if economies do enter recession, unemployment rises, demand dries up and profits tumble.

Now more than ever it is vital to review and discuss your personal strategy with an experienced professional. You need to be prepared before things happen, especially if you’re planning on retiring in the next few years. A simple first step is to come along to our Retirement Planning seminar in February, keep an eye on our Facebook page for details.

DISCOVER THE SCOUTS DIFFERENCE

Determined to make a difference, two years ago, Sally Griffith signed up to become a Cub Scout Leader at Proserpine Scout Group after her daughter loved being a cub scout.

Sally realised the group needed more leaders to ensure the stability of the Cub Scout section and to help the group grow. During her journey she has made some amazing friends, learnt many life skills that she can now teach to the youth, watched many youths grow and become more independent.

“I am so grateful for all opportunities that are offered to me as a youth leader with Proserpine Scout Group and Scouts Australia.”

In 2024 Sally plans on completing her Leader training to be awarded her wood beads, gain her qualification to become an Archery Guide, and attend training to be qualified to take to youth to Proserpine Dam for Canoeing and Kayaking.

“As much as it’s for the children, adults get so much out of it too,” Sally explained.

Sally loves seeing the children from all over the Whitsundays come together and learn life skills and respect children from different schools and backgrounds.

“There’s no judgement between the youth, and we all support each other. It’s great to see how each child grows and comes out of their shell.”

The parents and leaders of Proserpine Scout Group themselves have become a close-knit tribe.

“Without Scouts, I don’t know if we would have found each other and become such great friends.”

Adult Helper

Proud to be a part of Proserpine Scout Group, Shelly takes great pride in watching her two boys learn life skills and grow personally. She loves attending camp and assisting the leaders while getting to experience her sons Scout journey.

“It brings a tear to your eye when you witness your child put up a tent without any adult help.”

“I was told about Proserpine Scout Group by another parent. Eventually I just started to stick around and help out. This came with personal gratification and yes, I have learnt one or two things,” Shelly explained.

“Now, I help organise activities that us adults would be interested in as well as the kids. We usually

get a high ratio of adults to children at camps and bushwalks, so it is our social life too.”

Through Scouts, Shelly’s children have grown more confident, fearless, and capable young people, and within her role, Shelly has been able to witness this evolution, and is proud.

“It’s really cool. My boys are so confident. I have had the opportunity to go down an abseiling tower with them either side of me, and then there are the camps. I never miss out on those.”

SAVI GRIFFITH AND RYAN PENHALLURICK

Cub Scouts Savi and Ryan thrive in the tight-knit community that is Proserpine Scout Group. Ryan is a fifth generation Scout, following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents.

Savi joined Scouts because she wanted to meet new people and have fun.

Savi explained, “I like Scouts because I learn so much. I learnt how to tie different knots, cook food, and great survival skills. We also learn about First Aid, so I can help when people get hurt.”

However, the joy of meeting new friends, taking new adventures and testing herself is the best part of Scouts.

“I love meeting up with my friends on Tuesday and meeting new friends at Cuboree.”

Ryan is an adventurist, preferring the fast and adrenaline fuelled rush of amazing experiences.

Ryan explained, “We attended a 2-night camp called Scoutfest 2023 in Mackay. We got to try out a whole bunch of activities like abseiling, archery, mountain biking and rock climbing.”

“Try to leave this world

For Rob, becoming a youth Leader was not a difficult decision, being able to spend quality time with his daughter and give back to Proserpine Scout Group.

Working week on week off, Rob is only able to attend the weekly meetings once a fortnight, however he is a valuable asset to the group.

Initially bringing his daughter to an open night event, Rob welcomed the opportunity to become a leader and has completed the online training ready to attend the weekend training to become a qualified leader.

Spending time with his daughter and helping is something that Rob is proud to be doing. He had the opportunity to experience QLD Cuboree in September 2023 where he taught 780 youth over 4 days how to fish from the beach using a hand reel.

“It was rewarding to watch some of the kids catch a fish for the first time in their life.”

“And you don’t need to have a child in Scouts. You can just be an adult who wants to give back to the group and help out. Every adult needs a blue card and Scouts QLD has procedures to ensure all children and adults are safe.”

If this sounds amazing, and you are interested about joining Proserpine Scout Group, as a Leader, Adult Helper or for your child please email the group on contact@proserpine.scoutsqld.com.au.

EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL WITH MACKAY FORESTRY MULCHING SOLUTIONS

Operating for around six months, family-owned business Mackay Forestry Mulching Services are on the lookout to expand their team.

Power couple Peter and Stephanie Gordon are coowners of the business, each with their own diverse backgrounds. Stephanie has experience in operating a commercial tourist sailing business in Airlie Beach, and Peter owning a broadacre farming business in Central Queensland. The pair bring a unique blend of expertise to land management within a coastal setting.

As empty nesters who have raised six children between them, Peter and Steph now pursue their dreams. Steph’s insights into reef protection and coastal issues, coupled with Peter’s 40 years of experience in soil and farming land management, provide a comprehensive understanding of fire, flooding, and erosion mitigation.

With a commitment to a non-toxic stance, cultivated over years of dealing with chemical companies and witnessing the impacts on land and reefs,

Mackay Forestry Mulching Services offer services such as vegetation removal, earthworks, and soil regeneration.

Their approach involves investigating and rejuvenating soil, incorporating microbial rock minerals and other products to enhance plant health, reducing toxicity, mitigating pests, and restoring microbial life and soil structure.

Forestry drum mulching, a cost-effective and quick method, minimises damage to the existing topsoil, selectively manoeuvring around high-value vegetation and returning nutrition to the soil. Their mobility on-site allows the team to serve a wide area, primarily focusing on the Whitsundays to Rockhampton region.

Mackay Forestry Mulching Services prioritise removal and rebuilding over destruction and costly repair, coupled with their emphasis on environmentally-sound practices. As a family business, they foster lasting friendships with clients, offering a transparent pricing model and various

ongoing regrowth control options.

Specialising in a versatile and selective forestry mulching process that precisely removes vegetation, Mackay Forestry Mulching Services assist to avoid damage to high-value trees and regrowth. The service plays a vital role in clearing flammable bush and reducing the impact of flooding and runoff by allowing rainwater to penetrate the ground via improved soil structure.

The team addresses common issues such as excessive chemical usage, bulldozer-induced soil degradation, and loss of wildlife habitat. By using smaller, high-powered industrial machinery on tracks, soil compaction is also greatly reduced.

Mackay Forestry Mulching Services are determined to bring a new dimension to the land management industry in Central Queensland, striving to care for the area, its people, local businesses, and the crucial role of land and wildlife.

The Isaac Region Beyond The Coal

Nestled in the heart of Queensland’s resource-rich landscapes lies the vibrant Isaac region, a testament to the tenacity and resilience of mining communities. At the epicentre of this bustling region stands Moranbah, a town whose beating heart is intricately entwined with the pulse of the mining industry. However, Moranbah is just one facet of the remarkable tapestry that encompasses towns like Middlemount, Dysart, and Clermont, each a testament to the symbiotic relationship between resource extraction and community development.

The Isaac region breathes life into Queensland’s mining sector, an industry that continues to surge, shattering output records year after year. The unyielding growth of this sector speaks volumes about the unwavering dedication and innovation of those who toil beneath the surface, driving economic progress and national prosperity. The Bowen Basin, covering approximately 60,000 square kilometres, is home to over 40 active coal mines which supply over half of Queensland’s saleable coal, painting a vivid picture of the region’s remarkable contributions to

the state’s mineral wealth.

Yet, beyond the glinting mines and the numbers that underscore their productivity, lies a narrative of community strength and interconnectedness. While the mines laid the foundation for these towns, it is the tight-knit, family friendly communities that have nurtured their growth, fostering a sense of belonging and resilience that spans generations. Families and businesses, deeply rooted in the fabric of these towns, proudly uphold legacies of hard work, camaraderie, and a collective spirit that withstands the test of time.

The Isaac region is not merely defined by its mineral wealth; it is a living, breathing testament to the resilience of communities bound by a shared history, aspirations, and appreciation for the region’s natural beauty. As the mining industry continues to flourish, it is the unbreakable spirit of the Isaac’s residents and businesses that truly shape the region’s landscape—a testament to the adage that while mines may build towns, it’s the community that sustains and enriches them.

Moranbah Discount Tyres And Mechanical's Remarkable Journey To Industry Excellence

Industry recognition is often seen as the hallmark of a successful business, and when a small business from a small community is acknowledged on the national stage, the business must be doing something right. After being nominated in August, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical was announced as a winner at the 2023 Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards. Claiming the Champion Mechanical Repairs Award, owners Carolyn and Jamie Fritz were presented with a customised statuette trophy and a certificate at a glittering National Presentation Evening in Sydney in September, gaining invaluable kudos as a nationally recognised industry leader.

“We’re amazed by it,” said Carolyn.

“In these challenging times, to be able to come out as leaders in our field is a real accomplishment. That’s the biggest award we’ve ever won in our 18 years of business, so to get that recognition, against a lot of bigger businesses than ourselves, was pretty awesome.”

The Champion Mechanical Repairs Award is a huge feather in the cap of Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, but it’s not their first award of such prestige; in 2022, the business was also awarded the Dunlop Super Dealer of the Year Award for the state of Queensland.

“We were ecstatic that we were able to pull these two awards off,” Carolyn said. “It really boosts the enthusiasm of our employees.”

The Founder of the Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards, Steve Loe, congratulated Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, saying small businesses remain as dedicated as ever to service of their communities.

“Despite myriad challenges faced by small business owners during the past two years, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical is clearly exhibiting vital requirements of professional success, team spirit, creativity, hard work and commitment,” he said.

When Carolyn purchased a Moranbah tyre business in 2005, she set herself on a path to establishing one of the biggest mechanical and tyre businesses in the area, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, who have been going from strength to strength for close to two decades. The growth of the business became too much for her to handle on her own, which is when her husband Jamie came

onboard, the pair dividing responsibilities into tyre and mechanical divisions.

Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical’s capabilities include a wide range of services, including auto electrical, mechanical and tyre requirements. The business has eight main divisions that work together to offer customers a one-stop-shop for all their vehicle needs. The team also offers complimentary vehicle pick-up and delivery and a car wash with every service to local families in the community.

Born in Western Australia, Carolyn has made Moranbah her home and the community her extended family. Living in the area for nearly 40 years, Carolyn is driven by those around her and by an ethos of helping others excel.

With the success of her own ventures, she strives to help others in the community by giving opportunities to apprentices, including workers living with disabilities. Her proudest moment came when helping a gentleman who could neither read nor write achieve a trade certification under her business’ tutelage; he still works for her now.

“Moranbah has given us so much that I want to give back and say thank you,” Carolyn said.

“You don’t realise how great it feels to do something for someone else until you’ve done it. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to see the people I’ve helped excel.”

It’s this team that she’s built around her that Carolyn says won Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical these awards. From the dedicated long-term employees to the young apprentices giving it their all, these awards are hard earned by a hard working team.

“We’ve got quite a few employees who have been with us for over 10 years, and that contributes to the stability and experience of the team,” Carolyn said. “The management team that we’ve got, our Tyre Manager and Workshop Manager, they are obviously leaders in their fields as well, so without them, Jamie and I wouldn’t be able to do it.

“Jamie’s a key part of the business; he doesn’t stop, he’s amazing. And that’s what it is, it’s a combination of everybody’s strengths pulling together and working together.

“We’re just bloody awesome at what we do.”

EXPLORING THE ISAAC FROM HIDDEN GEMS TO PANORAMIC PEAKS ISAAC

The Isaac Region is diverse and beautiful, encompassing sweeping plains of rich desert to picturesque and perfect natural water lagoons.

Here’s our list of the top adventures to take in the Isaac Region.

CAMP AT THERESA CREEK DAM

The hidden oasis, just south of the town of Clermont, is a spot like no other.

One of the most idyllic camping and fishing spots in the Isaac Region, all visitors are surprised by the beautiful water and better weather. Perfect for swimming, camping, canoeing, water skiing, jet boating, and fishing, or even just sitting back and relaxing, Theresa knows just how to look after visitors.

PAN FOR GOLD

While in Clermont, don’t miss a once in a lifetime opportunity to pan for gold and relive history. Clermont’s gold history begins in 1861, when two shepherds discovered gold, which spurred a flurry of well-wishers looking for the lucky nugget.

Declared a gold field in 1862, Clermont is still a flourishing and lush reserve and is ready for fossickers to give their skills a test.

Be sure to have your metal detector, pick, Fossicking Licence, safety gear, and map ready to go for this adventure.

HIKE WOLFANG PEAK

Named for its distinctive peak, with the allusion of being a ‘fang’, Wolfang peak is just one of many natural wonders in the Peak Range National Park. Sure to catch visitors’ eyes when crossing the Peak Downs, Wolfang Peak is a rhyolite plug that was once completely encased in basalt, which has since eroded away. This peak is a great vantage point to stargaze and be sure to spot the Milky Way galaxy on a clear night.

WITNESS GREATNESS AT THE DACHSHUND RACES

While the quaint town of Middlemount is known for its lush history of mining and friendly nature, one of the best things about Middlemount is the infamous Dachshund Races, which is a staple at their regular Middlemount Race Days.

The Dachshund Dash began as an imaginative way to reinvigorate interest in the races, however, they have become a staple on the schedule.

ENJOY THE VIEW FROM A NEW VANTAGE POINT

Experience the absolute best of the Isaac Region with this once in a lifetime opportunity. Offering breathtaking views, Bush Heli-Services has visitors high in the air, witnessing the spectacle that is the Isaac Region, from the Peak Ranges to along the coast, every square metre of the Isaac Region is yours to view and relish in. This tour company can also drop you off on the top of Lords Table Mountain near Dysart for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

FEEDING HOPE

Anglo American has partnered with Emergency and Longterm Accommodation Moranbah (ELAM) to extend vital support to those facing crises in the Isaac region. The collaboration, spanning two years, focuses on food relief measures through the Community Pantry and Emergency Relief initiative.

At Anglo American’s Moranbah North and Grosvenor mines, dedicated donation bins collect non-perishable pantry goods donated by staff, playing a pivotal role in keeping the pantry stocked for those in need.

Tracy Chapman, ELAM’s manager, highlighted their vision to combat hunger and improve nutrition in the community, praising Anglo American for its funding and employee-driven donations.

“Most of our clients are living from pay to pay after using their savings.”

Beyond food provision, ELAM’s Food for Thought Program provides 65 daily breakfasts and lunches to local schools like Moranbah State School, Moranbah East State School, Moranbah High School, and Coppabella State School.

Ms Chapman said the increasing cost of living was adding further pressure to families and individuals who were already struggling to make ends meet.

“ELAM has experienced a significant demand for emergency relief over the past 12 months, and the cost of living is putting families under increasing financial stress,” she said.

Moranbah State School principal Anthony Edwards said Anglo American’s sponsorship of the Food for Thought Program in 2023 and 2024 provided security and peace of mind that no child would go hungry at school.

“People may not realise Moranbah has a large population of families doing it really tough. Whether that be working families or non-working families, there are a lot of students whose families don’t have the resources to get food on the table every single day,” he said.

TOP 5 REASONS TO REPURPOSE AND RECYCLE

Environmental Preservation: Recycling and repurposing conserve natural resources by reducing the need for raw materials. This helps in preserving forests, saving energy, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately combating climate change.

Waste Reduction: Recycling diverts waste from landfills, minimising pollution and reducing the amount of

how we perceive value, both in items and in individuals. Here, donated goods embark on a new journey, breathing life into overlooked treasures, while creating opportunities for those who crave stability and purpose in their lives. It’s not just a store; it’s a platform for social change.

At the heart of this initiative lies the spirit of community, where surplus funds aren’t pocketed by individuals but reinvested back into the mission – empowering and supporting those often sidelined in the job market.

Beyond the walls of the

trash that ends up in oceans, rivers, and ecosystems. It’s a proactive step in tackling the global waste crisis.

Energy Conservation: Reprocessing materials into new products often requires less energy than manufacturing from raw materials. This significantly reduces energy consumption and associated carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Economic Benefits: Recycling creates job opportunities in

Incredable Tip Shop lies a larger impact – an environmental ripple effect that’s profound yet often overlooked. Every item diverted from ending up in landfills symbolises more than just reducing waste; it signifies a collective step towards preserving resources and embracing a sustainable future. It’s about reimagining the lifecycle of goods, shifting from a disposable culture to a community-driven circular economy.

collection, processing, and manufacturing sectors. It also supports a circular economy, fostering innovation and creating new markets for recycled materials.

Community Impact: Recycling and repurposing encourage community engagement and empowerment. Initiatives like local recycling centres or donation hubs not only provide resources but also foster a sense of shared responsibility and connection within communities.

Born into a legacy of blossoms, sisters Monique and Emily, leading the Starcut Flowers team, don’t just arrange flowers; they script love stories with petals and stems.

For over three decades, their parents’ floral farm has been the cradle of their craft, nurturing an unmatched expertise in floral artistry.

The sisters’ forte lies in curating transcendent wedding experiences. Meeting each couple personally, they offer a comprehensive service, handling every nuance from set-up to the finest detail, ensuring a seamless and magical day. Their one-stop-shop approach not only simplifies but often trims costs for clients, making dreams more accessible.

As Mackay’s premier wedding stylists, Starcut Flowers harnesses years of industry insight to orchestrate bespoke themes that transform venues into enchanting sanctuaries. Looking ahead to 2024, envision couples celebrating in diverse settings—from rustic cane farms to tranquil seaside retreats. Starcut’s hallmark service tailor’s floral arrangements to suit the ambiance, whether

fresh, dried, or preserved, ensuring an ethereal touch to every celebration. Neutral palettes featuring creams and wicker evoke timeless sophistication, harmonising beautifully with the delicate elegance of white roses.

Their expertise transcends mere bouquets, adorning ceremonies with elaborate floral aisle displays and fragrant petal cascades.

Beyond weddings, their retail emporiums on the Peak Downs Highway near Ooralea and in the Mater Hospital are treasure troves of delights, housing a myriad of unique gifts from lush plants and homewares to pamper products and bespoke gift sets.

Starcut Flowers doesn’t just provide flowers; they craft tales of love using a unique language known only to blossoms. With each carefully chosen bloom, they paint the canvas of a new chapter, turning ordinary moments into unforgettable beginnings.

For Monique and Emily, it’s more than floral arrangements—it’s about creating cherished memories that linger long after the day is over.

ENLIGHTENED LIVING

Opening eyes, enriching lives and leaning deep into holistic healing is experienced health coach, Norma Strang, a healer who embodies her craft and understands the intrinsic link between food and wellbeing. A teacher and an avid researcher, Norma is constantly broadening her knowledge level, determined to offer a wealth of wisdom to her clients who come to her with a wide range of ailments. From anxiety to menopause, cancer to weight issues, Norma is adept at treating each individual with a tailored holistic approach.

Originally from Scotland, Norma moved to Spain when she was 17 and spent two years living there before moving to London and then eventually Australia, where she settled in Sydney. Pursuing a corporate career, Norma worked in fashion and then moved into the dynamic world of marketing. She relocated to Melbourne where she furthered her career, taking a managerial role at the Herald Sun running The Cars Guide.

The corporate world was exciting and high-paced, however, Norma always felt drawn to personal health and had a passion for helping others. She followed this passion and became a yoga teacher, concentrating on Bikram Yoga. She found a balance with the physical side of yoga and her many trips to India where she learned meditation and became ordained as a Hamsacharia (Soul Teacher) by a Himalayan Master. With the drive and determination she used to fuel her ambitions in the corporate world, Norma channelled the energy to open a series of successful yoga schools, soon moving to Byron Bay where she spent 15 years.

Continuing with her journey of health and healing, Norma became certified as a Dr Morse Detoxification Specialist and incorporated this knowledge, when hosting small-group retreats in Bali. These enriching wellbeing retreats developed a strong following, allowing Norma to fully discover and fine-tune what she wanted to offer her clients. A vegetarian of 27 years, Norma always had a passion for making healthy food taste fantastic and while in Bali she became a Raw Vegan Chef.

“It’s the food, it’s always been about the food,” shared Norma.

“People don’t realise that food is medicine.”

A health retreat with Norma will always begin with detoxification. A firm believer in cleaning out the body to maximise healing, Norma will introduce a diet and parasite cleansing herbs with special juices to un-clog the lymphatic system. From here, the real healing

“A deep passion of mine is plant medicine – medical cannabis, mushrooms and micro dosing,” she explained.

For six years Norma has been studying medical cannabis and other plant-based medicines. She has now become an educator, determined to change the stigma and mis-use of these substances so they can all be used for positive healing.

“Plant medicines are incredible for issues such as anxiety and depression which are sadly on the increase,” stated Norma.

An Airlie Beach local of over 18 months, Norma has recently begun re-establishing her health coaching business here in the Whitsundays. Holding regular yoga classes at Coral Sea Marina with her business, Yoga+5, Norma focuses on the Five Tibetan Rites, which is the first of its kind for the region. She is also launching a series of retreats this year - from one-on-one individual retreats to smallgroup settings, she is looking forward to imparting her years of wisdom and helping others transform their lives.

An author of one acclaimed memoir, Norma is currently writing a second book. In her spare time she focuses on research to help her clients and continuing her spiritual journey. She is also a lover of the outdoors and can often be found down at the beach with her beloved dog, Bhride. normastrang.com

MIND, BODY & SOUL

Prioritise Your Eye Health in 2024

In the rush of daily life, it's easy to take our sight for granted. Yet, the value of our eyesight remains unparalleled. Despite this, recent statistics from the 2020 Vision Index reveal a concerning trend: 35 per cent of Australians overlook regular eye check-ups and, shockingly, 12 per cent have never visited an optometrist.

"Most of us only seek appointments when we sense an issue," highlights Kelly Menzies from Local Eyes Optometrists Mackay.

Menzies and Rebecca Vella, the practice focuses on delivering top-tier eye health services and bespoke eyewear solutions. Their commitment to cuttingedge technology, quality products, and personalised care sets them apart. Patients experience unrushed consultations, ample appointment times, and a team dedicated to addressing individual needs.

YOUR PATH TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN 2024

MT Chiropractic Mackay

As the new year dawns, Experience Healing Mackay transitions into MT Chiropractic Mackay, ushering in a renewed commitment to your well-being.

"Our focus is clear: restoring movement and strength to alleviate pain," owner, Dr. Mathew Tibbitts said.

"However, early detection is pivotal, with over 90 per cent of eye conditions being treatable if identified early,” she added. The recommended frequency for eye check-ups is every two years for those under 65 and annually for those over 65. However, individual circumstances, including family history or ongoing eye concerns, might necessitate more frequent visits.

Beyond the urgency of regular checks, local independent optometrists like Local Eyes prioritise exceptional eye care.

Founded by Mackay locals Kelly

“We provide adequate appointment times, so we can offer genuine fullscope professional optometry services, and patients are made to feel heard and never rushed,” Kelly said.

Regular eye examinations offer more than just eyeglass prescriptions; they provide a comprehensive assessment of overall eye health. Detecting potential conditions at their onset significantly enhances treatment prospects.

Don't delay—prioritise your eye health today.

Local Eyes Optometrists take pride in being independently owned and operated, with a team dedicated to providing the very best in quality eye care. Find them at Northern Beaches Central, Rural View.

In a world where sedentary lifestyles are commonplace, the repercussions on our bodies are profound. Repetitive work patterns and insufficient movement disrupt our body's balance, resulting in discomfort and pain.

“It is when we can't move properly, but try to, that we aggravate components of our body which gradually leads to pain,” Dr. Mat explains.

“When we focus on the movement and strength of the body, our posture and balance will excel.”

The clinic's ethos aligns with empowering individuals to reclaim their health and collaborates with local gyms and sports teams, advocating for a holistic approach to wellness.

"External factors act as stressors on our bodies," notes Dr. Mat.

"Diet, environmental elements, emotions, and physical activity all

contribute to our overall stress levels. Our aim is to diminish physical stress through chiropractic care, enabling better coping mechanisms for emotional and chemical stressors."

Reducing physical stress holds the key to enhancing our ability to manage life's other stressors. As we alleviate stress, our health and contentment flourish. The essence lies in striking a balance, reducing stressors to pave the way for a happier, healthier life.

Experience the transformation; prioritise your health today. You can find MT Chiropractic Mackay at Shop 5, 8-14 Centurion Drive, Mackay.
